US superyacht builder Westport Shipyard under new majority ownership

US superyacht builder Westport has been acquired by Westport, LLC, an ownership group that includes members of Louisiana's Chouest family.

The Washington-based builder celebrated its 50-year anniversary in 2014. The builder has three locations in Washington state and a marina and sales office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The builder is renown for its composite built, semi-custom superyachts. Gary Chouest is an owner of one of the larger yachts in Westport's lineup.

'Gary has always been passionate about our industry, and we are honored to count him as a customer, and now our majority owner, as well,' says Westport’s President Daryl Wakefield. He will remain in his post, alongside General Manager Dave Hagiwara and Westport's senior management team and employees. Westport employees more than 400 employees.

The Chouest family primarily has holdings in the oil and gas marine transportation industry. They also own custom sportfish yacht builder American Custom Yachts, based in Stuart, Florida.

The mood at Westport post-acquisition is upbeat, and the investment influx should bring new visions from the shipyard. Ron Nugent in the Florida office confirms this notion and hints at exciting new action coming from Westport, which has its own in-house vessel design and development team. 'We are always tweaking our products,' Nugent adds, in reference to Westport's commitment to updating its popular models. 'You will be hearing a lot more from us.'

New Ownership for Westport Shipyard

There’s an ownership change at Westport. Good luck to involve and keep on building those fine yachts. Here is their press release. –KH

Representatives of Westport Shipyard, Inc. (Westport, WA), the largest yacht builder in North America, announced today that the company’s assets have been acquired by Westport, LLC, an ownership group that includes members of the Louisiana-based Chouest family.

Westport112

Westport 112

Celebrating 50 years of business in 2014, Westport maintains three locations in Washington state, as well as a marina and sales office in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Employing over 400 skilled employees, Westport has completed more than 120 yachts since 2000. And one of those customers was Gary Chouest.

“Gary has always been passionate about our industry, and we are honored to count him as a customer, and now our majority owner, as well,” said Daryl Wakefield, Westport’s president, who will remain in that position, along with General Manager Dave Hagiwara, and the rest of Westport’s management team and employees.

The Chouest family of companies includes substantial holdings in its primary business in the oil and gas marine transportation industry worldwide, but also includes the successful Stuart, FL-based American Custom Yachts (ACY). Since 1994, ACY has maintained a 63-acre facility accommodating the design and construction of world-famous custom sportsfishermen, as well as a host of other affiliated companies.

“Similar to the history of the Chouest family business, Westport began five decades ago with a fishing fleet, and has diversified into many other core businesses, focusing on customer satisfaction and the pursuit of excellence,” said Gary Chouest.

“We are pleased to join the Westport family, and look forward to pursuing the synergies that exist between the Chouest companies, ACY, and Westport. We will continue to pursue the employment of skilled local workers, and will remain an active participant in the communities Westport serves,” Chouest added.

Also similar to the Chouest business model, Westport maintains its own in-house vessel design and development team. Their composite-built yachts perform to a known standard, delivering exceptional speed, range and handling characteristics.

“The Westport family is excited about joining forces with the Chouest family, but we also must acknowledge the wonderful contributions of Mr. John Orin Edson, our majority shareholder since 1997,” Wakefield noted.

Since 1997, Westport’s majority shareholder has been Mr. John Orin Edson, the billionaire founder of Bayliner Marine.

“Similar to the history of the Chouest family business, Westport began five decades ago with a fishing fleet, and has diversified into many other core businesses, focusing on customer satisfaction and the pursuit of excellence,” said Gary Chouest.

Westport has facilities three locations in Washington state, as well as a marina and sales office in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The company has built more than 120 yachts since 2000, including one for Gary Chouest.

Chouest buys Washington yacht builder

Galliano shipbuilder Gary Chouest is a lead investor in a group that has bought one of the largest yacht builders in North America.

Chouest and members of his family are part of Westport LLC, a group that purchased Westport Shipyard, which operates three facilities along the northern Washington state coast and a sales office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Westport employs more than 400 skilled employees and has completed more than 140 luxury yachts since 2000. Its yachts range from 85 feet to 164 feet and sell for prices in the 10s of millions of dollars. The company has been in business 50 years.

“Gary has always been passionate about our industry, and we are honored to count him as a customer, and now our majority owner, as well,” Daryl Wakefield, Westport’s president, said in a news release.

Wakefield will remain in that position, along with General Manager Dave Hagiwara and the rest of Westport’s management team and employees.

The price of the sale was not disclosed.

Edison Chouest, which builds and operates boats for the offshore oil industry in the Gulf of Mexico and worldwide, is Houma-Thibodaux’s largest employer, with about 11,000 employees worldwide, including thousands in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes. Chouest’s companies include American Custom Yachts in Stuart, Florida.

“Similar to the history of the Chouest family business, Westport began five decades ago focused on a commercial fishing fleet and has diversified into other core businesses but maintains an emphasis on customer satisfaction and the pursuit of excellence,” Chouest said in the news release.

“We are pleased to join the Westport family and look forward to pursuing the synergies that exist between the Chouest companies, ACY, and Westport,” he said. “We will continue to pursue the employment of skilled local workers and will remain an active participant in the communities Westport serves.”

Westport, the largest yacht builder in North America, whose main building facilities are in Westport and Port Angeles. WA, has been building sea-going vessels since 1964. With over 170 fishing boats to their credit, and 35 passenger ferries plying the waters of the Pacific Northwest, the entry into the luxury yacht market has produced 160 motoryachts and precipitated the name change from Westport Shipyard to Westport Yachts. The Westport, WA. facility includes 170,000 square feet of enclosed space; the Port Angeles facility boasts 100,000 square feet. Then there is the 80,000 sq. ft. cabinet shop and 4,100 sq. ft. for the upholstery shop. The Design Department consists of naval architects, marine engineers, and design specialists.

The prestigious list of naval architects that have assisted in the design of Westport yachts includes William Garden, Donald Starkey, and Greg Marshall, with the credit of the Westport 112 design going to the ubiquitous Jack Sarin. One of the better-known Westport owners is Gary Chouest, head of the Edison Chouest Offshore companies known for their Gulf Coast marine holdings including a fleet of 200 commercial vessels. Gary currently owns a 2016 Westport 164. Gary’s son Dino owns his father’s former 2007 Westport. Gary Chouest, whose marketing team declined an interview with him for this review, bought Westport Yachts in 2014. The Chouest family also owns American Custom Yachts of Stuart, Florida. While we’re name-dropping famous owners, credit goes to Orin Edson, founder of Bayliner Yachts, who purchased Westport Yachts in 1997 and maintained ownership until he sold it to the Louisiana based Chouest family 6 years ago.

Westport combines the traditional yachty ambiance with contemporary styling. Sylvia Bolton, based in Seattle, WA., has been bringing her design talents to yachts for thirty years. Westport yachts are all semi-custom which enables the owners to modify the interior décor and furnishings to their personal tastes. Perimeter soffit with crown molding is seen on headliners throughout. All overhead lighting is LED and is controlled with the Crestron system. Serious attention has been paid to the audio-visual systems onboard and include the Kaleidescape movie server system and the Digital Media distribution system, providing a variety of entertainment sources throughout the yacht.

I’m sure there’s many a captain who would consider this beautiful entry to the pilothouse as the stairway to heaven. The intricate details, partnered with the practicality of wooden steps with non-skid, is a precursor to what awaits at the top.

The vast display of displays should tell the captain everything s/he needs to know about where to go and how to get there. The twin MTUs, with their 2,185 hp thrust, power the 150ton ship at a cool 22-knot clip. One fuel tank divided into three compartments quenches their thirst with a 5,480 gallon capacity. The latest and greatest in navigational equipment, communication paraphernalia, and monitoring systems are all present and suitable for worldwide voyaging.

The viewing gallery offers a spectacular vantage point. Aside from being a comfortable platform for the backseat drivers or wannabe captains, it’s an interesting place to monitor the displays as well as a nifty lunch spot. The overhead cabinets store the volumes of manuals should one want to read about things like the yacht’s construction which is primarily comprised of foam-cored composite materials with E-glass reinforcements and vinylester resins. Structural framing combines E-glass and carbon fiber reinforcements. Of course the structure is engineered to ABS rules.

Even the lower accommodation foyer shows the touches of casual elegance combined with practicality. Storage aplenty throughout the yacht with much of it stowed away in hidden compartments concealed by displays of art.
