Aspire lift 5.5 Metre world title after tense final day in Porto Cervo

Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) has won the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Sardinia, after a tense final day on the water in light winds with just one race possible. They overcame a massive challenge from  Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) who ended up just one point behind, while Race 9 winners  Ku-Ring-Gai III  (AUS 66, John Bacon, James Mayjor, Terry Wetton) protected their third overall.

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

Ku-Ring-Gai III  led at every mark to take a well-deserved bullet and secure third overall, while  New Moon III  (BAH 25, Mark Holowesko, Christoph Burger, Peter Vlasov) sailed a great race to cross third to end a tough week for them   For  Aspire , this was their first attempt at the world title and also marks the first ever 5.5 Metre title won by a Polish team. Winning major titles, and Olympic medals, is no stranger to Kusznierewicz but he was genuinely delighted, and relieved, to have taken home this title this week.   “It's an amazing feeling to be the world champions in the 5.5 Metre class. We enjoyed it so much. Actually, I must say, it was tough. We had to put a lot of energy into it. We built up for a couple of days after arriving here, and every day we were striving to improve. I believe this dedication was the key to our success – to never give up, to be better every day. We delivered. Just one point ahead of  Artemis . Congratulations to them. Also, a shoutout to the Australian team led by John Bacon. The entire fleet was fantastic, and we truly enjoyed Porto Cervo and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Thank you very much.”

Middleman, Przemysław Gacek, added,  “We really enjoyed our time here. It is my first title ever, so I'm super excited. I was practically pushed into the water already, so I'm quite wet. It’s been an amazing few days in Porto Cervo, a great venue for sailing with different angles and conditions. Today was a surprise because after the first race, it calmed down, and we thought we were going back. Then they let us go for the last race, which was just unbelievable. We pretty much, let’s say, defended the championship in the last two, three hundred meters. An amazing time. Also, big congratulations to Mateusz, our incredible skipper, and to Ed, who, after becoming the World Champion in Finn, secured his second World Championship this year. We are proud to have him as a team member.”   Current Finn world champion, and bowman, Ed Wright, was overjoyed to win a second title this year, “ It was an awesome regatta, really. Porto Cervo is an incredible venue with some really good winds, offering a mixture of sailing conditions – wavy, flat, windy, light, medium, testing every sort of angle of sailing technicality. Being a member of  Aspire  was fantastic, and I'm happy to have won the world championship. It was stressful along the way with our ups and downs, but in the end, we came out on top.”

Aspire and Artemis slug it out for 5.5 Metre World Championship in Porto Cervo

Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) and  Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) extended on the fleet with a race win apiece on the penultimate day of the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Sardinia.  Ku-Ring-Gai III  (AUS 66, John Bacon, James Mayjor, Terry Wetton) moves up to third.

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

Thursday brought light and occasionally moderate winds for a great day of racing in Porto Cervo, while many of the top 10 recorded some high scores, which opened the gap for the top two boats.   The first race started with a Mistral wind of 8-9 knots with several boats over the line at the start, which left them playing catch up. The front runners from the start were  Jean Genie  (GBR 43, Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, Ruairadh Scott),  Aspire  and  Ku-Ring-Gai III  rounding the first windward mark in that order, very close to each other.    Aspire  and  Ku-Ring-Gai III  used the downwind pressure well, both passing  Jean Genie  and from that point onward, they led the race, with  Aspire  crossing first ahead of  Ku-Ring-Gai III .  Jean Genie  managed to secure third on the last downwind leg, passing  Artemis .

Artemis fight back on Day 3 of World Championship in Porto Cervo

Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) put in the best performance on day 3 of the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Sardinia, to pull back to within three points of event leaders  Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright).  John B  (BAH 26, Gavin McKinney, Mathias Dahlman, Lars Horn Johannessen) moved up the third after winning the last race of the day.

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

Despite the earlier start at 11.00 to make the best of the forecast, Wednesday produced light and shifty conditions of no more than 5-8 knots that challenged everyone and brought a lot of different boats to the front of the fleet. It was a tough day and many decisions had big consequences as the fleet navigated the tricky wind.   In Race 5,  Marie-Françoise XXII  (SUI 232, Jürg Menzi, Lionel Rupp, Christof Wilke) rounded first and sailed away to a comfortable win. Behind them,  Beta Crucis  (AUS  63, Bob Stoddard, Martin Cross, Simon Reffold) rounded second with  Artemis  in third and battled downwind and up again with  Caracole  (SUI 214, Bernard Haissly, Daniel Stampfli, Nicolas Berthoud) also in the mix. As they approached the finish,  Artemis  just had enough lags to cross in front of  Beta Crucis  to take second.   The breeze looked like it might increase for the second race but in fact dropped to 5-6 knots. This time,  Isla  (GBR 40, Stephen Quigley, William Finlay, Tom Quigley) rounded first from John B and  Melx III  (GRE  5, Stavros Papagiannopoulos, Panagiotis Kamouridis, Pavlos Kagialis). At the gate  Ku-Ring-Gai III  (AUS 66, John Bacon, James Mayjor, Terry Wetton) was just ahead of  John B  with the Greeks still in third. It all changed on the second beat with  John B  making a break and leading down to the finish from  Artemis  and  Ku-Ring-Gai III.

Both  Artemis  and  John B  put in impressive performances in very tough conditions. With the discard now in after six races,  Aspire  holds a three point lead over  Artemis , which scored two amazing second places today, while  John B  is a further nine points back.   Gavin McKinney said,  “The first 10 minutes of the race set the tone, and whether you're a slow or fast boat matters. If a slow boat gets in front, faster boats may catch up, but if a fast boat positions itself well, it becomes challenging to be overtaken. Two days ago, a faster boat passed us when we were in front. Today, we had good pressure, played some shifts well, and that seemed to work in our favour.   “It's crucial to secure a decent lane at the start and then position yourself on the right side. In the first race today, unfortunately, we were on the wrong side, and we faced some challenges. However, in the last race, we made the right call, and upon tacking, we achieved a favourable angle and quickly moved ahead of the fleet. It's a bit like rolling the dice, and consistency pays off. We're pleased, especially considering we were almost late for the start today. We managed to get out there, and we used our light gear, which was a bit of a gamble, but it turned out okay. It was the first time we've used it.”

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

It's the first major championship for the Greek team and they are really enjoying the fleet and the competition.   Stavros Papagiannopoulos said, “ We truly appreciate the class and the races, and the race committee does an excellent job. The weather has been very pleasant, and today's conditions were particularly accommodating for us, resulting in a much better performance compared to previous days.   “In the second race, we fared quite well, relatively speaking. The initial part of the race was solid, and we managed the downwind section effectively. However, we encountered some challenges in the second part, leading to a bit of a setback and we ended up in 11th position.”

Aspire seizes lead on Day 2 of 5.5 Metre World Championship in Porto Cervo

Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) has taken the lead at the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Sardinia, after two more races on Tuesday, in very different conditions.   The Jean Genie  (GBR 43, Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, Ruairadh Scott) drops to second and  Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) remains third.

Highlights from Day 2 of the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship in Porto Cervo

Louise Morton, possibly the first, but certainly the first women in a long time, to win a 5.5 Metre world championship race said,  “It was a fantastic day of racing. We had a clear plan going into it, but unfortunately, we got off to a rough start and had to cross a few boats on port after the initial start. However, we decided to head towards the right side of the course, where we found better wind pressure, and it paid off. We managed to secure a lead at the first mark and maintained it throughout the entire race. It was incredibly thrilling, even though I wasn't allowed to glance around much. I kept asking, "Are we still in the lead?" So overall, it was a great experience, and I'm thrilled with our performance. Winning a race in a world championship is a first for me, and I'm absolutely ecstatic about it.   “However, the second race didn't go as smoothly for us. We had a decent start and managed to reach the top mark in the vicinity of fifth place. Unfortunately, the wind became extremely light, and the waves were still quite substantial. We encountered some challenges, including hitting a mark, and this led to various mishaps. Several boats ended up passing us during this race. We're hoping that this race will be our discard, and we can bounce back in the upcoming races.”

Aspire  has taken the overall lead after four races. Kusznierewicz said, “ Sailing in Porto Cervo for the World Championship has certainly presented its challenges. We always have a plan for the first beat after the start, but here, you really have to sense what the wind will do. The conditions are made trickier by the significant waves, which persisted even when the wind was lighter today.    “The 5.5 boat is fantastic, and I absolutely love sailing it. However, it's crucial to work as a cohesive team; it can't be just one person's effort. I'm genuinely pleased with how Ed and Czemek (Przemysław) performed today.    “We operated as a unit, responding to the waves and the wind. Really good job for Louise and her team for winning the first race of the day, and I also want to commend Bernard Haissly from the  Caracole  team for their good performance.   “But we're mindful that this regatta is far from over; we're not even halfway through. Our focus must remain sharp. I've stressed to my team that it's going to be a long week. The weather forecast for the upcoming days suggests it won't be easy. We can expect varying wind conditions, sometimes even light winds. There are plenty of exceptional sailors here who are fully capable of winning races. So, we're staying focused, aiming to enjoy the experience, and in the end, we'll see where we stand.”

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

On  Ali Baba , five times (as helm) world champion Flavio Marazzi is sailing with his two daughters, Julie (15) and Eline (12). They are now in eighth overall after a 2,4 today, matching the score of  Aspire .   Julie explained,  “The 5.5 is an incredibly cool boat to sail and sailing with your family is always a fantastic experience. It allows us to spend quality time together and build a strong sense of trust and mutual respect. It's funny because when we were kids, we used to say, ‘Dad's a sailor,’ but we didn't fully grasp what that meant until we started sailing ourselves. We've developed a deep respect for his profession and what he does.   “Additionally, the location here is stunning, and sailing in Porto Cervo is a lot more enjoyable than back home in Switzerland at Thunersee. It's a bit wilder here with more waves and, usually, more wind. Although today's conditions weren't as windy as we'd hoped for, the first race was still amazing.”   In the Evolution fleet,  Criollo  (GER 30, Andreas Christiansen, Felix Christiansen, Moritz Christiansen) maintains her lead in 22nd, while the first Classic boat remains  Cibele  (ITA 72, Fabrizio Cavazza, Vittorio Zaoli, Duccio Colombi) in 24th. Racing in Porto Cervo continues Wednesday and runs through until Friday.   Results after 4 races 1  Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) 10 2  The Jean Genie  (GBR 43, Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, Ruairadh Scott) 19 3  Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) 21 4  New Moon III  (BAH 25, Mark Holowesko, Christoph Burger, Peter Vlasov) 25 5  John B  (BAH 26, Gavin McKinney, Mathias Dahlman, Lars Horn Johannessen) 28 6  Ku-Ring-Gai III  (AUS 66, John Bacon, James Mayjor, Terry Wetton) 29 7  Girls On Film  (GBR 41, Louise Morton, Andrew Mills, Sam Haines) 32 8  Ali Baba  (SUI 224, Flavio Marazzi, Julie Marazzi, Eline Marazzi) 34 9  Shaolin  (SUI 226, Philippe Dürr, Andreas Kindlimann, Hans Von Werdt) 36 10  Manly  (AUS 44, Marc Ryan, Dave Edwards, Marcus Burke) 38   Full results: https://www.yccs.it/regate-2023/international_55_metre_class__world_championship-3311/risultati-307/risultati_provvisori_dopo_r2   Many more photos in the gallery here::   https://www.flickr.com/photos/fivepointfivemetre/albums/72177720311474707

Costa Smeralda Itineraries

Costa smeralda review, review of costa smeralda.

The 2019-built Costa Smeralda cruise ship is from the new Helios-class vessels ordered by Carnival Corporation . The ship order agreement with Meyer Werft was signed in July 2015 and included the construction of all 4 new cruise ships . The contract was finalized in April 2016. Of these 4 vessels, 2 are for Costa Cruises and the other 2 for AIDA Cruises (Carnival's German brand). Other Excellence-Class liners (Costa Smeralda's sisterships) are Costa Toscana (2021), Carnival Mardi Gras (2021), Carnival Celebration (2022), Carnival Jubilee (2023), P&O Iona (2020), P&O Arvia (2022), AIDAnova (2018), AIDAcosma (2021).

The vessel (IMO number 9781889) is currently Italy- flagged (MMSI 247391900) and registered in Genoa .

History - construction and ownership

Costa Cruises is a Genoa -headquartered subsidiary company owned by Carnival Corporation . Costa is Europe's second-largest cruise line (after MSC ) with year-round operations in the Mediterranean. Costa was founded in 1854 as a cargo shipping company. It started passenger shipping services in 1947, with regular Transatlantic crossings between Europe (Italy) and South America. In 2000, Costa Cruises was acquired by Carnival Corporation (shipowner).

Costa Smeralda cruise ship

The new Costa ships were scheduled for delivery in 2019 (Smeralda) and 2020 (Toscana). Costa's units were built in Turku Finland , AIDA's - in Papenburg Germany . Each unit has GT-tonnage 183,000 tons, 2600+ cabins, double-occupancy passenger capacity 5200+ (max 6600), crew capacity ~1700.

Ship's design features more efficient use of both indoor and open-deck spaces, with several multi-functional areas. Deck 16 is the activity deck with a water slide, water park, high rope garden, mini-golf. The pool deck is covered with a retractable glass roof. The Beach Club (adults only complex) is beneath the glass roof and features an activity area with 2 waterslides, rock climbing wall, sports deck area. This deck also has a giant LED wall for movies and other outdoor video entertainment. The ship has dedicated club lounges for teens and kids, including for toddlers.

The panoramic glass elevators also connect the outdoor areas. There is a 45-m above water level located glass-bottomed skywalk, huge wellness complex (Organic Spa and Fitness), a plaza with numerous bars and shops, Atrium Lobby lounge (meeting place with a stage for street performers), large-capacity Theater (show lounge).

The new Costa and AIDA sisterships are the industry's first fully LNG-powered cruise vessels, generating all of the onboard and propulsion power from LNG (abbrev Liquefied Natural Gas) - both in ports and at sea. With the new vessels, Costa Group had a fleet of 7 ships on order . This brand new fleet has a total capacity of 41,000 berths. In comparison, the combined Costa's fleet capacity is 110,000 berths.

The 4-vessel contract was part of a previously announced larger shipbuilding order with Fincantieri (Italy) and Meyer Werft for all 9 new vessels with scheduled deliveries between 2019 and 2022.

Managed by Costa Group, the Costa and AIDA combined fleet is Europe's largest. In 2014, one out of every two cruise ship tourists in Europe sailed on either AIDA or Costa ship. In 2015, Costa Group had 20 offices in 14 countries, around 27,000 shipboard employees and total passenger capacity of over 68,000 berths (across the combined fleet). Costa Group also is the leader of China's rapidly growing cruise market in Asia.

Besides the ship's staff and crew, Costa cruise passengers are also served by Peper robots - the latest cyborg technology implemented fleetwide in 2016. These humanoid robots greet and guide passengers upon embarkation. They also assist them throughout the cruise by providing information and tips on onboard dining, entertainment, enrichment program (workshops, pre-scheduled events), casino and shopping promotions, shore excursions and tours. Pepper robots are mobile and communicate in 3 languages (English, German, Italian). They can also interpret human emotions by analyzing voice tones and facial expressions.

Itineraries

Costa Smeralda itinerary program is based on 7-day Western Mediterranean cruises leaving roundtrip from homeports Civitavecchia-Rome , Savona , Barcelona , Marseille , La Spezia (Italy) and Palma de Mallorca (Majorca, Spain) . To be able to handle the large cruise liner, Port Savona's terminal had to be modified.

The 7-day itinerary program was planned to start on October 20, 2020 (inaugural cruise) but was rescheduled for the period December 21 (2019) through May 16 (2020). The cruise liner leaves roundtrip out of Savona (departures on Saturdays), Marseille (on Sundays), Barcelona (on Mondays), Palma de Mallorca (on Tuesdays), Civitavecchia-Rome (on Thursdays) and La Spezia (on Fridays).

In the period December 3, 2020, and February 21, 2021, Costa scheduled for the Smeralda ship 7-day itineraries exclusively dedicated to Italy (passenger sourcing and call ports). The week-long voyages were planned as B2Bs (back-to-back itineraries) and optionally divided into two short cruises (3-day and 4-day) both departing from homeport Civitavecchia-Rome.

  • The 4-day itinerary visits Civitavecchia (Sundays),  Naples  (Mondays),  Messina Sicily  (Tuesdays), Cagliari (Wednesdays).
  • The 3-day itinerary visits Civitavecchia (Thursdays), La Spezia (Fridays),  Savona (Saturdays).
  • The 7-day voyages were available for booking with departures from all ports in the itinerary.

Eventually, Smeralda had this itinerary program between March 27 and May 1, 2021. From May 1, the liner restarted the regular 7-day Western Mediterranean itineraries visiting Italy (Savona, Civitavecchia, Palermo Sicily ), France ( Marseille ) and Spain ( Barcelona ,  Palma de Mallorca ).

Costa Smeralda Wiki

On September 6, 2017, was the vessel's steel-cutting ceremony held at Meyer Turku shipyard in Perno Finland. The Smeralda ship was scheduled for delivery in October 2019, with sistership Costa Toscana following in 2021. Vessel's max draught is 8,6 m (28 ft). Its service/cruising speed is 17 knots (32 kph / 20 mph).

In February 2018, the shipbuilder Meyer Turku contracted ALMACO Group to supply the liner's galley equipment. This deal was the company's first contract with Costa Cruises and also its largest cruise ship galley equipment order. ALMACO Group is a full-service provider of marine vessel cabins (passengers and crew living quarters), wet units, galleys (kitchens), provision stores.

Costa Smeralda cruise ship construction

On July 4, 2018, at Meyer Turku was held the traditional coin ceremony, during which commemorative coins were positioned along the keel for good fortune. Ceremony's godmother was Elisabetta Moraci (28-year-old, serving Costa Cruises as Second Deck Officer). Ship's launch ceremony (float-out from drydock) was on March 15, 2019, attended by Neil Palomba (Costa Cruises President) and Jan Meyer (Meyer Turku's CEO). The christening ceremony was scheduled for October 22, 2019, to be held in Port Rotterdam (Holland) . In November 16-23, 2019, the vessel successfully passed sea trials.

Liner's namesakes are the ferry ship Cruise Smeralda (1997, GRIMALDI LINES ) and MV Esmeralda (1979-built riverboat). Cruise ship's decks are named after famous Italian cities - from Palermo (deck 4) to Trieste (deck 20), The "social heart" of the liner is "Colosseo" - midship show lounge (on 3 levels) featuring large LED screens on its walls and dome. Also new for the fleet is Costa Design Museum - sized 400 m2 and curated by Matteo Vercelloni (Italian designer and architect).

The cruise ship is named after Costa Smeralda (translated "Emerald Coast") which is an approx 20 km (12 mi) long coastal area in northern Sardinia Island (Italy). The scenic coast is lined up with white-sand beaches, premium golf courses, top-luxury hotels, large yacht marinas, private jet and helicopter services. As a vacation destination, Sardinia's Costa Smeralda attracts mainly affluent tourists, including many celebrities. As a residential location, Costa Smeralda is currently ranked Europe's most expensive, with house prices up to EUR 300,000+ per m2 - or USD 4+ million for a 100 m2 (1076 ft2) house property. The largest seaside resort towns are Porto Cervo and Romazzino. Porto Cervo is often visited by some of the world's largest megayachts.

The liner was officially delivered by Meyer Turku to Costa Group on December 5, 2019.

Like most large -sized newbuilds , the Costa ship Smeralda is LNG-powered , with 4x Caterpillar Marine LNG engines (model MaK 16M-46DF) generating combined output 57,2 MW. The propulsion system is based on two Azimuting thrusters with combined power output 37 MW. The ship has 3 LNG tanks (cryogenic steel) with total capacity ~3200 m3. Two of the tanks are larger (length 35 m, diameter 8 m, LNG capacity 1525 m3), while the 3rd tank has length 28 m, diameter 5 m and capacity 520 m3. Smeralda's first LNG-bunkering (fueling) was conducted on December 18, 2019, in Port Barcelona.

The christening ceremony was held in Port Savona on February 22, 2020. The naming ceremony was led by Godmother Penelope Cruz Sanchez (1974-born Spanish actress and fashion model) and also attended by Michael Thamm (Costa Group's CEO), Neil Palomba (Costa Cruises' President), Paolo Benini (ship's Captain / Master) and Bruno Barbieri (Italian Michelin-star Chef). The special event continued with an acrobatic show (Viktor Klee production staged in the Colosseo Theatre) and ended with a fireworks show launched from a barge ship in front of Fortezza del Priamar (Fortress).

Excellence/Helios-Class Costa cruise ship

Inaugural cruise 2019 itineraries

Perfect breeze for start of 33rd Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

Perfect breeze for start of 33rd Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

  • Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

Porto Cervo, Italy. 4 September 2023. Sardinia’s typically perfect weather conditions graced the first day of the 33rd Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. The north-northeasterly breeze built from an initial 10 knots to around 16 knots, allowing the Race Committee get racing underway at 12 noon as scheduled. Today, the Maxi B Class and the J Class sailed two windward-leeward races, while the Race Committee set a coastal course for the four remaining classes, taking them to circumnavigate the islands of Caprera and La Maddalena in a counter-clockwise direction before returning to Porto Cervo. The yachts in the fastest classes, Maxi A and the new Multihull Class which is making its debut at this event, completed a course of around 35 miles in total, which involved rounding the Monaci island to starboard before returning to Porto Cervo. The Maxi C and Supermaxi Class, meanwhile, had a more direct route to the finish via the Passo delle Bisce resulting in slightly shorter courses of 29.7 and 32 miles respectively, with the small difference in length allowing for a more compact fleet at the finish line.

Much of the course consisted of beam or broad reaches, enabling the maxi yachts to show off the full extent of their power. But it was the tactical calls, choice of sails and the crews’ skill in manoeuvres that made all the difference, allowing yachts to gain ground and overtake the early leaders, as was the case for Leopard 3. Back on the docks, tactician Mitch Booth explained: "On the last reach to the finish we decided to hoist an A3 gennaker, it was the winning move. In fact, Galateia used a 'jib top' and Magic Carpet a narrow reach sail. So we passed Galateia and won the race, but thanks must go above all to the crew for their outstanding work. In addition the boat, following works on the rig and other modifications, is going decidedly better than in the past."

Leopard 3 therefore sits at the top of the Maxi A Class after the first day, followed by Galateia and Magic Carpet 3.

In the Multihull Class, the Swiss yacht Allegra, owned by YCCS member Adrian Keller and with Paul Larsen on tactics, took the win ahead of the Gunboat 68 Convexity 2, owned by Don Wilson, and the Gunboat 80 Highland Fling 18, owned by YCCS member Lord Irvine Laidlaw.

The Supermaxi Class saw Claus-Peter Offen's Wally 101 Y3K claim victory, followed by Marco Vogele's Inoui and Juan Ball's Swan 115 Moat. All three of the leading owners in this class are members of the host club.

In the Maxi C Class, the largest and most varied, the French Botin 65 Spirit of Lorina, owned by Jean Pierre Barjon, won today ahead of the Vallicelli 78 H2O owned by YCCS member Riccardo de Michele, with the Mylius 65 Oscar 3 owned by Aldo Parisotto in third.

The two windward-leeward races for the Maxi B and J Class yachts were held off the Gulf of Pevero. From an initial 11 knots, the wind intensified to reach 19 knots accompanied by increasingly choppy waters, which made for two highly technical races that put the crews to the test. Things couldn’t be closer in the Maxi B Class, where the top three boats currently sit on equal points with a victory and a third place each for Proteus and Cannonball, while Bella Mente racked up two second-place finishes.

The three J Class yachts put on a spectacular show in the wind and waves, with Svea emerging as the winner of the day on two victories. Second place went to Velsheda and third to Topaz.

Bouwe Bekking, tactician on Svea: "In the first race, we had less wind than expected and had to concentrate a lot on the speed of our boat, but we weren’t flawless in our manoeuvres. In the second race, with more wind, Velsheda showed its greater speed, we earned our victory on the last run. Tomorrow, with more wind forecast, promises to be an exciting day for the J Class!"

Morgan Larsson, tactician on Proteus: "It was a great day’s sailing, the conditions were quite challenging but we had a lot of fun. For us, being part of such a tight competition means we have a lot more learning opportunities than the others because we are a relatively new group. Today Christina Sakellaris was helming. She is still getting to know the boat and I myself am still getting to know it better. I know there is a good margin for improvement and I’m determined to do better in the next races."

Gasper Vincec, owner and helmsman of the Slovenian maxi Way of Life: "Today we had a beautiful breeze and a spectacular course. With a top level fleet like the one here in Porto Cervo we paid for a few too many mistakes made. Our goal is to perform at our best, that’s not how it was today but tomorrow is another day and we will work hard."

Racing is set to resume on schedule tomorrow at 12.00 noon, with forecasts of a north-easterly wind in excess of 20 knots.

Early voting starts Oct 25th, and runs through November 3rd. During this period, citizens can go to the Latah County Courthouse between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and vote. Otherwise, election day is on November 7th, at which time citizens will need to go to their respective precincts to vote ( Precinct Map ), based on their residential address.

If your permanent residence is here in Moscow, Latah County, Idaho:

****************************************************************************************************

To register to vote online (voteidaho.gov) or at the Latah County clerk’s office or at the polls, you must be a citizen of the United States, 18 years of age, a resident of Idaho and your county for 30 days prior to the election. To prove this, you must provide:

  • Idaho-issued identification card or Idaho driver’s license or current US passport
  • One approved proof of residence document

Any of the above photo identification with correct residence address:

  • Lease or rental agreement
  • Utility bill (excluding cellular telephone bill)
  • Bank or credit card statement
  • Paystub, paycheck, government-issued check
  • For students: Enrollment papers from current school year.

Identification

Do you have an Idaho state-issued photo identification card (or driver’s license)?

Yes, I have an Idaho state-issued photo identification card (or driver’s license).

Is your address current on it?

If not please update your address online at dmvonline.itd.idaho.gov/   Or in person at Latah County DMV, 1313 S. Blaine Street, Moscow, ID 83843. (No need to pay the $20 new-card fee. The address will be corrected in the state’s system.)

No, I do not have an Idaho state-issued photo identification card (or driver’s license) .

Follow the Idaho DMV rules for a driver’s license. Or apply for an Idaho photo identification card:

Bring 1 or 2 (2 will allow you to get a Star Card for travel purposes) of these original documents proving residency that are less than a year old in your current name with current address to the DMV:

  • Lease, rental agreement, mortgage, or deed
  • Account statement from one or two different utilities (no ¾ page or cell phone bills)
  • Account statement from a bank or financial institution
  • Medical or insurance provider statement, invoice, or explanation of benefits
  • Pay stub or employment verification (it must list your legal name.)
  • Idaho school enrollment records with current address (college IDs are not accepted)
  • Residency affidavit signed by an adult over age 18
  • Vehicle, homeowner’s, or renter’s liability information.
  • And bring your birth certificate and social security card .

Have you been recently married and need to update your name on your Idaho state-issued photo identification card (or driver’s license)?

First, change your name on your social security card by taking to Lewiston Social Security Office:

  • Maiden name social security card
  • Marriage certificate (not the gold-seal version, but the certified copy)
  • Must have State File Number, Groom, Bride, and Family ( maiden ) Name completed
  • Birth certificate (recorded copy, not the keepsake copy)
  • Maiden name state-issued photo identification card (or driver’s license).

Then, change your name on your Idaho state-issued photo identification card (or driver’s license) at the Latah County DMV, 1313 S. Blaine Street, Moscow, ID 83843.

I was recently married, but I do not have ANY valid photo identification card

  • Follow the Idaho DMV rules for a driver’s license.

Or apply for an Idaho state-issued photo identification card (see steps above). Wait for the plastic one to arrive in the mail.

2. Change your name on your social security card by taking to Lewiston:

  • New Idaho state-issued photo identification card (or driver’s license).

3.  Wait 24-48 hours. Then return to DMV in person for your state-issued photo identification card (or driver’s license).

There is a new, free Idaho voting identification card option for people who do not drive. This program began in July 2023, so there is not much information available on it.

The signed affidavit is only to be used if the properly registered voter comes to the polls without a picture identification, and his verbally given address matches the roster. If the addresses do not match, the person must re-register to vote (must go and get the photo identification and proof of address).

As a student , where should I register to vote?

From the Idaho Secretary of State’s website :

“College students must establish, as with all other voter registration applicants, that the locale within which they seek to register and vote is their domicile i.e. that they are living in the college community with the intention of abandoning their former domicile and with the intention of remaining permanently, or for an indefinite length of time, in the new location. Some of the factors which may be relevant in determining whether domicile has been established for voting purposes by a student as well as any other applicant, are as follows:

  • Has the applicant registered to vote elsewhere?
  • Where does the applicant maintain his checking and saving accounts, if any?
  • Where does the applicant pay taxes, and what address did he list as his residence on his last income tax return?
  • What is the residence listed on the applicant’s driver’s license?
  • If the applicant owns an automobile, where is it registered?
  • Does the applicant live year round at his claimed domicile, or does he divide it elsewhere? If it is divided, how much time is spent elsewhere and for what reason?

As a student, you should not be registering and voting in your college locale simply because you failed to register and vote at your true domicile. Registering to vote is a serious matter which should only be done after proper reflection. It should be noted that there is no federal right to vote anywhere in the United States for the office of President. State laws control registration and voting and State residency requirements must be met.”

“We need and want all students to vote at their legal domicile.”

If your permanent residence is in another state, contact your home state’s election division to register and vote (absentee?) there.
