On board with Bob and Amy Book, owners of 47m superyacht Book Ends

Having gone two years without a yacht, superyacht owners Bob and Amy Book are making up for lost time. They have crossed the Atlantic to explore the Med – and meet new friends along the way, as they explain to Risa Merl...

“Yachting defies common sense. It's really irrational when you think about it; a deep-rooted love,” says Bob Book, owner of 47 metre Heesen Book Ends , his 17th yacht of that name.

It was in the middle of their honeymoon more than 40 years ago in Acapulco, Mexico, that Book and his wife Amy discovered their passion for boating. The newly-weds went out on a little five metre boat along the coast, and Book was instantly smitten. “I went back every day until I got sun poisoning. I’m on my honeymoon in this very romantic place, and I couldn’t do anything! Good introduction to boating, right?” Book says with a laugh. Back home in New York, Book wasted no time and bought his first boat.

“It was a 25ft single screw. It had a mustard hull and yellow seats. Amy named it Book Ends , which has stuck all these years,” says Book. “I was the captain and she was my first mate. And we had no idea what we were doing.

”Since that time, the Books have become seasoned sailors, owning ever-larger Book Ends , including a Westport 112 and a 40 metre before their new Heesen. The maiden voyage of the first little yellow Book Ends was a short mosey down the Hudson River and around the Statue of Liberty. For second-generation Americans, whose grandparents arrived at Ellis Island as immigrants escaping troubles in Europe, seeing Lady Liberty from this perspective brought tears to Bob and Amy’s eyes. “Our grandparents arrived in steerage, and here we were in our own boat, living the American Dream,” says Book.

Truth be told, Bob Book is the American Dream incarnate. Born the son of a rabbi and raised on New York’s Lower East Side, Book’s idea of boating as a child was riding the Staten Island Ferry, which cost five cents. But a little ingenuity propelled him from immigrant’s son to serial entrepreneur before he even graduated from college.

“My first business was an accident,” Book says. He was attending NYU in 1970 and discovered there were 21 colleges and universities within the five boroughs of New York City and all were suffering from student housing shortages. The city was also at the height of its financial crisis and hotels were “in the doghouse”, as Book puts it, reporting less than 50 per cent occupancy. He saw an opportunity, and at only 19 he started his first business, a student housing company that worked with hotels to rent unused rooms to students. This expanded to offer rooms to young professionals as well, with its reach soon growing across the country and the world.

Book’s next business was a natural evolution. “I had thousands of students in lots of different hotels, and half of them couldn’t pay the rent each month,” he says. “So I started a temp service to find them jobs.” One of the students who was constantly broke was particularly good at making sandwiches, so Book came up with an angle. “Around 11 o’clock every night, I’d send him to all the rooms in hotels – just about the time when the kids would start getting the munchies because they were smoking grass – and he’d sell out his sandwiches every night!”

By the time Book graduated, the temp service was going strong, so he and a business partner started an employment agency. This was just the beginning of a long list of successful businesses that he has helmed over the years. A decade ago, he acquired what’s currently his biggest company, Jet Support Services, Inc (JSSI), the world’s top independent provider of aircraft maintenance programmes. Book is the chairman and one of his two sons, Neil, serves as CEO. JSSI has headquarters in Europe, Asia and Chicago, where Neil keeps his own boat on Lake Michigan.

“That’s his third boat in three years, so he’s following in my footsteps,” Book says, beaming with pride. “The first two boats were Sea Rays. Next year I think he’ll move into a 22.8 metre Viking ; and my grandson Sidney, who’s six, loves it!”

Being able to pass down the love of yachting to their children and grandchildren is part of the joy of yacht ownership for the Books. “Yachting is also a great way to keep your family together,” says Amy. “You know, ‘if you build it, they will come’? Well, if you have a boat, your family comes and spends time with you! It’s the best.”

Spending time on board with family and friends – and meeting new friends along the way – is a big part of the attraction for the Books. Every summer for seven years, they would rendezvous with their good friends, the owners of the 61 metre Hakvoort Just J’s . Before the summer of 2017, Book received a call from the owner of Just J’s saying he was planning to move the boat from Newport to the Med for the summer. “He asked me, ‘are you sure you’re going to have a boat by this summer?’” Book recalls.

The Books had found themselves in a rather unusual place – without a superyacht. Their previous Book Ends , a 40 metre Westport, had sold surprisingly swiftly, and they were in the middle of a two-year shopping trip to find the perfect yacht, one that would have the range and space they desired to go further afield than their usual cruising grounds of the Eastern Seaboard and Bahamas.

“I was in every shipyard in Europe for two years and spent almost $2 million shopping for a boat,” Book says, explaining he had marine surveyor Ian Kerr check out any boat he was serious about. “If you do it right, that’s a couple hundred thousand bucks. I would frankly never buy or build a boat without Ian overseeing it.”

When the owner of Just J’s called again to ask if he’d have a boat in time, Book responded positively, thinking he was about to close a deal. “But that deal blew up over lunch, and that’s when Thom Conboy [of Heesen Yachts] called me,” says Book. “I had just stepped out of the lunch and Thom said, ‘what’s it going to take to get you in this 47 metre?’” Book had been to Heesen on his yacht shopping tour, but because they were originally after a 55 metre, the 47 metre in build at the Dutch yard hadn’t caught their attention. “It was like divine intervention – we agreed on a price and 48 hours later I was in the shed.” In less than a month, they took delivery, just in time to join Just J’s in the Med.

The new Book Ends ticked a lot of the boxes – steel hull, long range, good storage – but it didn’t exactly match their preferred interior style. The Books like to have a simple base to personalise, and since taking delivery they’ve worked to tone down some aspects of the original design, adding simpler joinery, more white carpets and removing superfluous furnishings, all the while adding their signature bright orange hue and bold artwork, much collected on their travels.

In Portofino they bought pieces from a local artist, who they invited over for breakfast the next day. “He said no one had ever invited him on board before,” Book says. “And now I’m trying to arrange an exhibition for him in the States.”

Meeting new people, whether it’s the couple on the yacht next door in La Spezia or locals in the Med or Bahamas, is what keeps the Books interested. They prefer this over “seeing and being seen”. “Our favourite places might be places that not everyone likes,” says Amy. “Capri is beautiful, but it was not what we wanted. Because we were there in the summer, it was like Times Square on New Year’s Eve. We like places where we can walk around, where we can really talk to people. We’ve made so many friends because of the boat.”

During their six weeks in the Med, the Books particularly fell for Italy, and among their favourite spots were Elba and Forte dei Marmi. The latter is the home of their good friend Andrea Bocelli , who helped the couple find a new captain, and one of their favourite restaurants, Santa Monica, is nearby in Viareggio.

Though the Books value the friendships they’ve made, the yachting life is also filled with a healthy dose of competition. They own a Viking 62 sportfisher and are about to take delivery of a Viking 72. The Vikings, named Book Ends Team Hookers, are put to work in fishing tournaments along the US East Coast and in the Bahamas. Book says fishing itself is boring – it’s the tournament atmosphere and meeting people from all walks of life that he enjoys. “I love the competition,” he says. “I have a great team whoall want to win. There’s an old expression, ‘show me a good loser and I’ll show you a loser’. So the fishing is always competitive, and it’s a lot of fun.” Book heads to Bahamas-based tournaments with a fleet – Book Ends serving as the mothership while the Viking and his Scout 42 head out to the fishing grounds.

Bob and Amy plan to spend even more time on board this summer. Book relishes the fact that he can work from his on board office. “Nobody knows where I am! We could have a board meeting and they just assume I’m in the office – no one knows I’m really in Italy.”

It’s not all been unalloyed good times, but the Books are experienced enough to know that peaks always follow troughs. “So many times I’ve said I’m getting out, it’s just not worth it; it’s so much stress, it’s so expensive and so many things can go wrong – and they usually do in boating,” Book says. “But then you have a summer like we had, six weeks cruising all over the Med and discovering places. You know if you leave it, you wouldn’t be sitting here, you’d be sitting on a couch somewhere watching a football game.”

Amy adds: “And we would never have gone to some of these places without the boat. Even if people do go by land, there’s no comparison to seeing these places from the water and having your home with you.”

The Next Chapter

  • By Diane M. Byrne
  • Updated: November 14, 2018

Some 44 years ago, while on his honeymoon in Acapulco, Mexico, Bob Book fell in love yet again — with boating. He fondly recalls taking out a 16-foot outboard-powered boat and being “hooked forever.” In fact, the American had such a great time that he and his wife decided to buy their first boat just a few months later. After a while, wanting to cruise more, they bought another boat. And then another. And another. Each one was successively larger, “appropriate for a certain period of my boating life,” he says. Eventually, the Books stepped up into superyachts. A few years ago, while they were enjoying the long range and family spaces of a 130-footer, their 16th — yes, 16th — yacht, Book decided that a full-displacement, metal-hull yacht was in order. A transatlantic crossing was on the couple’s minds, so reliable range and stability seemed the right fit. He had a list of additional must-haves skewed heavily toward technical features versus aesthetic ones. (Spending abundant time with your captain and engineer can have that effect on you.) He visited several shipyards across the United States and throughout Europe. He even knew exactly what length overall he wanted: 180 feet.

Instead, in springtime 2017, two years into the search, the Books bought a 154-footer that was less than a month from completion at Heesen Yachts in the Netherlands.

The 13th hull in Heesen’s 47-meter series, started on spec, the yacht ticked a lot of boxes for the couple. In addition, “Heesen was the most impressive in terms of quality of facilities, and production excellence/best practices,” Book wrote in an email. What’s more, he said, Heesen made “an unswerving commitment to deliver the boat on time and on budget,” even while inviting changes that involved more than mere pillow swaps.

To be clear, the Books weren’t interested in starting a yacht project from the keel up. Having owned two semicustom superyachts, a Westport 112 and a Westport 40M, they were accustomed to shorter delivery times than are possible with a custom build. Their desire to cruise the Mediterranean in summer 2017 was another big factor in the purchase.

Book says the quality control built into each yacht and Heesen’s reputation for holding value made strong impressions. So too did Thom Conboy, Heesen’s director of sales for North America, Mexico, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Conboy is the one who introduced the Books to Project Ruya, the yard’s in-build name. Since she was nearly finished, she would be ready for the summer season.

Project Ruya also had the technical features Book insisted upon. He wanted big MTU engines, for instance, along with a well-laid-out engine room. “I was always spending time with my engineer or captain, learning what could go wrong,” he says. The yacht’s 4,000-nautical-mile range was the same as the transatlantic figure he had in mind too.

Despite the smaller LOA than originally planned, Book Ends provides several good spaces inside and out for the Books and their family, which includes grandchildren. The sun deck is a favorite spot for entertaining big groups, while the bow seating is preferred for quieter moments.

Given that there were mere weeks to go before the yacht’s delivery at the time of the contract signing, you might assume Book Ends is the same as she was when Bob Book first laid eyes on her, save for a few throw pillows. Not so. “We knew we could make enough cosmetic changes to the interior of the boat that we could really put our signature on it,” he says.

The couple installed LED lighting on the main deck for ambience. Several additional TVs needed installation, out on deck and inside. The sky lounge underwent the most alterations. The family wanted a larger television and a games table. A bar that was already in place, forward to starboard, required changes as well. The original design, by Bannenberg & Rowell, concealed the bar behind doors. The Books wanted it out in the open. The colorful nature of the liquor bottles on display is reminiscent of the owners’ art collection.

“There are no perfect boats,” Book says. “Nothing is ever 100 percent, but if you get to 70 or 80 percent, I think that’s pretty darn good.”

On a scale of one to 10, he ranks Book Ends “a strong seven” and credits Heesen with embracing a philosophy he’s lived by as a consumer and as a businessman: “If you want to be successful, listen to what the customer says.”

And he is already a future customer for the yard too. “While I feel really comfortable and have nice volume on the boat, I think I’d be better off with a Heesen 55-meter or 60-meter. So, here I go again,” he says with a laugh.

Come June 2020, the Books are scheduled to take delivery of a yacht in the yard’s 55-meter steel class.

“Since I am early in the build,” he says, “this boat will be a nine out of 10.”

Oh, the Places You’ll Go

When the Books decided to cruise the Mediterranean, they planned on more than a South of France “milk run.”

During seven weeks this past summer, Book Ends cruised from Spain to Italy, visiting Barcelona, Ibiza, Capri, Positano, Portofino, Elba, Ischia, Rome and St. Tropez.

Heesen Superyacht Book Ends

Much like a good pair of book-ends, Heesen ’s latest superyacht is a true objet d’art.

The striking 164-footer, which was launched earlier this month, has now been fully revealed by the Dutch builder and is without a doubt one for collectors. Indeed, the vessel, christened Book Ends , was reportedly sold last September under her original name Project Sapphire to avid seafarers Bob and Amy Book. The couple has owned more than 17 yachts with that exact moniker, including a Heesen 153-footer and a Westport 112-footer .

Heesen’s latest fleet member features a sleek exterior penned in partnership with Omega Architects. Headed up by Frank Laupman, the Dutch studio has worked with the yard on a number of yachts over recent years. Most notably, a 180-footer called Moskito and a 198-footer known as Lusine. The newcomer’s naval architecture, meanwhile, comes courtesy of the ever-popular Dutch studio Van Oossanen and the in-house team.

For the unversed, Heesen’s custom aluminum superyachts are known for their efficiency and performance. Book Ends appears to be no exception. Part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, the vessel sports a low-drag hull design with a reduced transom depth. Heesen told Robb Report this refined shape results in efficiency gains of around 12 percent.

What’s more, the yard says the vessel is the first of its kind below 500 GT to comply with the latest emission standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In fact, her two MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines are fitted with Catalytic Reduction (SCR) units to reduce emissions. In terms of speed, Book Ends can reach 23 knots at full tilt.

Book Ends looks to be a stunner, too. She offers oodles of outdoor deck space, with a raised lounge on the main deck aft, a dining area on the upper deck and another lounge on the foredeck. To top it off, the sundeck offers a Jacuzzi, bar and dining table. She can reportedly accommodate up to 12 guests across five staterooms, along with nine crew in five cabins.

The superyacht has successfully completed sea trials and will now undergo interior outfitting before her delivery. Now that’s what we call a happy ending.

Book Ends - 2022

yacht bookends owner

Elegant, crisp and sporty with a reduced footprint

Book Ends is a fast-cruising yacht of below 500 GT and follows on from the successful Satori Class. Our in-house team of naval architects created an optimised, low-drag hull design with a reduced transom depth. These refinements have led to efficiency gains of around 12 per cent, while a draft of just 2.15 metres makes Book Ends the perfect yacht for exploring shallow, turquoise waters. Her ultra-efficient hull shape is seamlessly complemented by two MTU 16V4000M65L ‘green ocean’ engines, fitted with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) units to reduce NOx emissions.

First impressions

Book Ends is unique yet elegant and represents the culmination of a ten-year programme of design development at Heesen. The superstructure’s optical focus overlays the yacht’s actual centre of gravity, which explains why she seems so well aesthetically balanced.

On display at the MYS: 47m M/Y Book Ends

The savvy yacht owner has kept her in ‘like-new’ condition and is now offering her for sale….

Image for article On display at the MYS: 47m M/Y Book Ends

A new Heesen in top-notch condition is always going to be a sought-after option on the brokerage market. So sought-after, in fact, that very few appear seriously for sale in the early stages of their product lifecycle. As such, the 47m Heesen, Book Ends , which was listed for sale by Ocean Independence ( click here to view the listing page) at the end of August, will undoubtedly pique the interest of eagle-eyed buyers when she attends the Monaco Yacht Show next week.

“It’s rare these days that you get a boat in like-new condition appearing on the market for sale so soon after delivery,” explains Thom Conboy, president of the Americas at Ocean Independence. “Right now, there is not a Northern European boat on the market that is full-displacement and under 500 gross tons, at this age and price, so she’s standalone. The owner has been incredibly happy with the boat and the reason he’s selling is because we're in late discussions on a new 55m at Heesen.”

Book Ends was originally being built on speculation under the code name Project Ruya , featuring the exterior styling of Omega Architects and the interior design of Bannenberg & Rowell. It was nigh-on the day of delivery when experienced yachtsman, Bob Book – whose previous yachts include a Westport 112 and a Sunseeker – visited the yard and purchased the vessel with no thinking time required.

In an exclusive conversation with The Superyacht Report during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last year, Book said, “I’m a sucker for exceptional attention to detail and Dutch-built quality. I’ve been in a lot of engine rooms in my time and you can tell a good boat by the state of the engine room. On this boat, it’s impeccable. Some of the boats I looked at in Italy were very pretty inside, but the harnessing on the wires and the labelling was a mess – and it’s those little things that cause you problems later on.”

“Right now, there is not a Northern European boat on the market that is full-displacement and under 500 gross tons, at this age and price, so she’s standalone.”

The small detailing of the Bannenberg & Rowell-designed interior is immaculate. It’s the hinges on the beautiful, heavy-duty doors that caught my attention upon my visit. The Books love bright colours, especially orange, which is symbolic of this particular construction. “The owner has personalised the boat and made some changes to the sky lounge, with all new cushions and furniture,” Conboy continues. “But, that’s the nice thing about buying a spec boat – it’s a clean canvas to work with. The owner did a really great job on the boat, that’s for sure.”

Conboy says she’s worth every euro of her €29.9 million price tag and priced right where she should be. She has been maintained to an impeccable standard by Book – for example, at the time of my visit to the vessel last year, Book had just had the boat shipped to Fort Lauderdale from the Mediterranean on Dockwise and his crew had shrink-wrapped the entire boat for the journey. He has done everything he can to maintain her condition.

“The boat presents the best quality and the best price,” Conboy continues. “If we don’t get the right price for her at the Monaco Yacht Show, she’ll be in Barcelona over winter.”

For buyers who are looking for a top quality, like-new boat that is ready for immediate delivery and will see minimal depreciation with a diligent maintenance plan, Book Ends is a great option.

She is available for sale at the MYS this week through Ocean Independence and will be in berth T04 on T-Central.

Book Ends // Heesen Yachts

Heesen announced that m/y book ends (aka project ruya, aka yn 17947) is now delivered to the owner.

Book Ends   is a 47m full displacement motor yacht under 500 GT with a total exterior deck space of 180 sqm. Her sun deck has a space of 85 sqm.

At the stern is a transom that transforms into a swim platform. There will be also the tender garage with a stored 6.5m tender and a 3m jet ski.

The captain comments:

“It feels very safe as Book Ends’ structure is solid – Dutch solid! The vessel is very responsive and accepts steering commands immediately. The use of the large rudders in conjunction with the power steering unit makes for a very quick reaction when the steering tiller is moved, even the slightest amount. We can’t wait to welcome the Owners on board their new home away from home!”

Book Ends ‘ interior was designed by Bannenberg & Rowell . Twelve guests can sleep aboard in 5 staterooms. The owner’s suite is located on the main deck at the forward area. The other staterooms are on the lower deck and equipped with ensuite bathrooms.

“We took the idea of movement as the foundation for the new interior concept for Project Ruya,” Dickie Bannenberg comments, “so expect a taut muscular and fluid design with sporty, hi-tech finishes. The ambiance will be fresh and light with textiles, carpets, and graphics discreetly referencing themes of energy, direction, and progress. We feel this is synonymous with Heesen’s progressive and contemporary brand values, and that Project Ruya will be a worthy complement to the Heesen fleet. She is our fifth collaboration with the yard in its popular 47m class.”

Billionaire fights to dock his boat on water behind his house. His 164-foot boat, that is.

The love of the water, and a mega-yacht to enjoy it, is putting one resident at odds with village of north palm beach leaders..

yacht bookends owner

For some people, the ultimate Florida lifestyle is a waterfront house , a private dock and a boat parked next to it. But what if that boat is a mega-yacht , and the mega-yacht stretches 164 feet?

That's the conundrum facing the Village of North Palm Beach.

This tiny community in northern Palm Beach County, with only 13,000 full-time residents, has an identity so tied to the water that a ship's steering wheel is the village's emblem.

But it's that love of the water that is putting one resident at odds with village leaders.

For the past several years, homeowner Michael Bozutto has been battling the village for the right to park his 164-foot Westport, dubbed Honey, behind a home he owns at 932 Shore Drive.

The house, built in 1961, is a one-story, ranch-style property with three bedrooms on a half-acre lot. Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house in 2014, according to Palm Beach County property records.

Lawsuit rooted in dispute over where to dock mega-yacht

What makes this plain house special is its location. It's on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Bozzuto's motor yacht.

Since Bozutto bought Honey for an undisclosed sum a decade ago, he mostly has parked it at the Old Port Cove Marina, near Tiger Woods' 155-foot showy mega-yacht, ironically dubbed Privacy.

More recently, Bozzuto has wanted to park Honey alongside his Shore Drive house, one of four houses he owns in the village. While Bozzuto keeps some personal property at the Shore Drive house, he lives at a house he owns at Harbour Isles Court.

Village officials warned Bozzuto he can't park Honey at 932 Shore Drive because boats can only be parked on docks behind houses that are occupied by the homeowner.

But village rules do not define the word "occupied." For instance, the rules do not state that occupied means the house is a residence where the owner lives. Village rules also contain no restrictions on the size of boats that can be kept at private docks.

After years of pushing back against what he believes are fuzzy rules, Bozzuto in March filed a lawsuit against the village.

More: Cannonsport Marina sells for $58.5 million in big deal for tiny Palm Beach Shores

He alleged the municipality is illegally depriving him of his property rights because nothing in the village code prevents him from mooring Honey at his house. He is asking a Palm Beach County Circuit Court judge to rule that he has a constitutional right to dock Honey there.

Gregory Coleman, Bozzuto's West Palm Beach attorney, said the village has plenty of waterfront homes with yachts parked behind them. But Coleman said the village is illegally blocking Bozzuto from docking Honey at his house because the village is bending to pressure from a handful of neighbors who think the boat is too big.

The selective enforcement is wrong, said Coleman, a former president of the Florida Bar.

"He's a very under-the-radar guy who doesn't cause anybody any problems," Coleman said of Bozzuto. "He pays his property taxes, and he wants to be left alone by the village of North Palm Beach. Unfortunately, they are singling Mike out."

Neither Leonard Rubin, the village's longtime attorney, nor Village Manager Chuck Huff responded to requests for comment.

Eric Stettin, a Fort Lauderdale-based attorney who is representing the village in the Bozzuto lawsuit, said he could not comment on pending litigation.

What good is a man's castle if he can't have a boat in his moat?

Coleman's lawsuit describes the conflict as a battle over property rights, but real estate and yachting experts say it's also a sign of the times.

As wealthy new residents pour into the county wanting all the perks of the Sunshine State, they want a boat to go along with their waterfront homes and golf club memberships. Some longtime residents fear Palm Beach County is turning into a playground for billionaires, to the detriment of everyday people who also want to live in sunshine and peace.

This conflict between Old Florida and new money is an ever-present tension, but even seasoned yacht brokers say they've never seen interest in luxury yachts quite as strong as it is now.

More: Illegal boat slips are popping near Palm Beach Gardens. Residents want regulators to act

"What we've seen in the marketplace right after COVID in the yachting industry, and especially the superyacht segment, is the most incredible growth ever seen in the history of yachting to date," said Shannon McCoy, a luxury yacht advisor and broker with Worth Avenue Yachts in Palm Beach.

"A lot of people are moving here with serious money," added Pascal Savoy, U.S. managing director of Camper & Nicholsons International yacht brokers in Fort Lauderdale.

While in the past Palm Beach County was not considered lively enough for some buyers, Savoy said the county's growing sophistication is putting it on the map in a way never seen before.

"It's a mini-Monaco for us," Savoy said.

Prices for mega-yachts can range from $18 million to $60 million, or many times that, for the largest and most decked-out mega-yachts, Savoy said.

While some yachts can be glitzy, a 164-foot Westport is considered a more low-profile boat, Savoy added.

Michael Bozzuto's interests: Houses, boats and philanthropy

Bozzuto is no newcomer to North Palm Beach. He's been a resident of the village for 20 years.

He is the billionaire owner of a family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut, and an investor and philanthropist who likes to collect houses and yachts, Coleman said.

In addition to the four North Palm Beach houses and several yachts he owns, Bozzuto in February paid a whopping $31.1 million for a house in the Town of Palm Beach Shores. The house, which has two docks, sits just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet.

Twin City Mall: North Palm clears way for redevelopment, taller buildings at landmark site

Coleman said there is plenty of room for other boaters to navigate the waterway when Honey is parked at the Shore Drive house in North Palm Beach. And while other people may not have as large a yacht, there are other sizeable yachts parked on docks behind other North Palm Beach homes, too, he added.

At a 2017 village council meeting, then-Mayor Darryl Aubrey commented on the issue, according to the complaint.

"When I didn't live here full time, I had a boat sitting in my dock, I was gone nine months of the year. I don't see how you can say that someone has to be in a residence year-round, seems to be some interpretation of occupant, there would be an enormous number of violations," Aubrey said.

Another member of the village council asked if the village had a definition now, the complaint said.

Rubin, the village attorney, replied: "No, we don't," according to the lawsuit.

Show me the money? Here it is: West Palm and Palm Beach rank in top 5 as cities with fastest growth in millionaires

Palm Beach County's waterways run deep, and they are popular

The yacht docking dispute is particularly timely, given the scarcity of dock space for boats of all sizes.

The most convenient place to park a boat is on the water behind a house, brokers say. But not every waterway or channel can accommodate the draft, or depth, of a mega-yacht.

However, the dock behind Bozzuto's Shore Drive house can.

Not only is the Westport not known for its deep hulls, but the waterway also is typical of northern Palm Beach County, which boasts deep water and easy access to the ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet, said Coleman, a lifelong boater.

"In Palm Beach County, they have deeper water, and it allows people to have larger yachts," Savoy agreed.

But not every waterway is deep enough for every boat.

McCoy said she specializes in helping advise potential yacht owners about the county's varied water depths before they buy a house, if they plan to dock their yacht behind it.

If yacht owners don't have a private dock, the other option is a marina. But marina space is hard to find, with many dock berths reserved for months in advance, McCoy said.

Despite the challenges of owning a boat and finding a place to dock it, yacht brokers say demand continues.

They see interest continuing from business executives moving here with their families as they relocate their companies to Palm Beach County. There's also a growing demand for yachts among female buyers, McCoy added.

They also see younger mega-yacht buyers, some even in their early 30s. This is in sharp contrast to the mostly older buyers in the past, Savoy said.

Palm Beach County may not be as go-go as Miami-Dade County when it comes to showy ships, but if interest continues, "it's coming," Savoy said. "You're going to attract bigger yachts."

Put another way: "No one needs a boat, but everyone needs a boat," McCoy said. "It's the ultimate lifestyle."

Cargo Ship's Owner and Manager Seek to Limit Legal Liability for Deadly Bridge Disaster in Baltimore

The owner and manager of a cargo ship that rammed into Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge before the span collapsed last week filed a court petition Monday seeking to limit their legal liability for the deadly disaster.

The companies' “limitation of liability” petition is a routine but important procedure for cases litigated under U.S. maritime law. A federal court in Maryland ultimately decides who is responsible — and how much they owe — for what could become one of the costliest catastrophes of its kind.

Singapore-based Grace Ocean Private Ltd. owns the Dali, the vessel that lost power before it slammed into the bridge early last Tuesday. Synergy Marine Pte Ltd., also based in Singapore, is the ship's manager.

Their joint filing seeks to cap the companies' liability at roughly $43.6 million. It estimates that the vessel itself is valued at up to $90 million and was owed over $1.1 million in income from freight. The estimate also deducts two major expenses: at least $28 million in repair costs and at least $19.5 million in salvage costs.

The companies filed under a pre-Civil War provision of an 1851 maritime law that allows them to seek to limit their liability to the value of the vessel's remains after a casualty. It's a mechanism that has been employed as a defense in many of the most notable maritime disasters, said James Mercante, a New York City-based attorney with over 30 years of experience in maritime law.

“This is the first step in the process,” Mercante said. “Now all claims must be filed in this proceeding.”

Cases like this typically take years to completely resolve, said Martin Davies, director of Tulane University Law School's Maritime Law Center.

“Although it’s a humongous case with a very unusual set of circumstances, I don’t think it’s going to be that complicated in legal terms,” he said. “All aspects of the law are very clear here, so I think the thing that will take the time here is the facts. What exactly went wrong? What could have been done?”

A report from credit rating agency Morningstar DBRS predicts the bridge collapse could become the most expensive marine insured loss in history, surpassing the record of about $1.5 billion held by the 2012 shipwreck of the Costa Concordia cruise ship off Italy. Morningstar DBRS estimates total insured losses for the Baltimore disaster could be $2 billion to $4 billion.

Eight people were working on the highway bridge — a 1.6-mile (2.6-kilometer) span over the Patapsco River — when it collapsed. Two were rescued. The bodies of two more were recovered. Four remain missing and are presumed dead.

The wreckage closed the Port of Baltimore, a major shipping port, potentially costing the area’s economy hundreds of millions of dollars in lost labor income alone over the next month.

Experts say the cost to rebuild the collapsed bridge could be at least $400 million or as much as twice that, though much will depend on the new design.

The amount of money families can generally be awarded for wrongful death claims in maritime law cases is subject to several factors, including how much money the person would have likely provided in financial support to their family if they had not died.

Generally, wrongful death damages may also include things such as funeral expenses and the “loss of nurture,” which is essentially the monetary value assigned to whatever moral, spiritual or practical guidance the victim would have been able to provide to their children.

The Dali was just starting a 27-day voyage.

The side of a large ship, painted blue, with the words “Dali” and “Singapore,” sitting at a port.

  • Published March 26, 2024 Updated March 27, 2024

The Dali was less than 30 minutes into its planned 27-day journey when the ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday.

The ship, which was sailing under the Singaporean flag, was on its way to Sri Lanka and was supposed to arrive there on April 22, according to VesselFinder, a ship tracking website.

The Dali, which is nearly 1,000 feet long, left the Baltimore port around 1 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday. The ship had two pilots onboard, according to a statement by its owners, Grace Ocean Investment. There were 22 crew members on board, the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore said in a statement. There were no reports of any injuries, Grace Ocean said.

Before heading off on its voyage, the Dali had returned to the United States from Panama on March 19, harboring in New York. It then arrived on Saturday in Baltimore, where it spent two days in the port.

Maersk, the shipping giant, said in a statement on Tuesday that it had chartered the vessel, which was carrying Maersk cargo. No Maersk crew and personnel were onboard, the statement said, adding that the company was monitoring the investigations being carried out by the authorities and by Synergy Group, the company that was operating the vessel.

“We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected,” the Maersk statement said.

The Dali was built in 2015 by the South Korea-based Hyundai Heavy Industries. The following year, the ship was involved in a minor incident when it hit a stone wall at the port of Antwerp . The Dali sustained damage at the time, but no one was injured.

2 ship companies are invoking a 200-year-old law to try to skirt huge legal liabilities from the Baltimore collision

  • The owner and manager of the Dali containership are seeking to limit their legal liability to $43.7 million.
  • The 95,000-ton cargo ship collided with Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26.
  • An old law could cap the companies' liability at a fraction of the overall cost, a maritime expert said.

Insider Today

The owner and manager of the Dali containership that collided with Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge last week are attempting to limit their legal liability through an old law.

Grace Ocean, the vessel's owner, and Synergy Marine, the operations manager, are seeking to cap their liability at about $43.7 million — the value of the ship after the disaster, according to a court petition the companies filed on Monday in Maryland. The Singapore-based companies valued the 95,000-metric ton Dali at up to $90 million, pre-bridge collision.

Cleanup from the disaster will eat into the ship's overall value. Repair could cost at least $28 million and salvage another $19.5 million, the companies estimated. The freight was valued at $1.2 million. The companies will file another estimate after determining final salvage and repair costs.

Related stories

Grace Ocean and Synergy Marine filed their petition under a 19th-century federal law that limits owners' liabilities to the post-incident value of the ship and the money owed for the freight onboard. The same rule was successfully used by the owner of the Titanic, which sank in 1912 during its maiden voyage. The Titanic was insured for £1 million at the time, according to Lloyd's of London, the insurance marketplace where many of Dali's reinsurers operate.

Analysts expect the Baltimore bridge disaster to trigger billions of dollars in insurance claims, making it one of the largest single marine insurance losses.

If the limitation is granted, the companies may be able to save significant money on the forthcoming claims, Michael Sturley, an expert in maritime law and professor at the University of Texas at Austin's School of Law, told Business Insider's Natalie Musumeci last week.

The companies would have to establish that they were not at fault for the incident and that they had no knowledge of negligence or other conditions that led to the disaster in this case.

The official investigation also plays a key role in whether the petition is successful. The case is expected to take years to resolve.

The limitation act "is regularly invoked, but much less often successful," Sturley added to BI.
