The Sailor's Style Guide: How to Dress at a Yacht Club

If you've been invited to a casual yacht club rendezvous, you'll need the right threads to fit in.  in this guide, we'll walk you through the yacht club attire you'll need to fit in. hint: you can find the perfect outfit head to toe with castaway.

You've been invited to a meal or event at a local yacht club, but you've never been to one before. Suddenly, the panic sets in. What should you wear? Fortunately, there are lots of options and visiting a yacht club does not mean you have to spend a lot of money just to fit in. This post will give you some pointers on yacht club attire so that you feel neither under nor overdressed, and can really enjoy yourself and have a great time at the club.

Before you even think about what to wear, check to see if the yacht club you're going to has a dress code posted online. Most of them do, and the rules can vary from club to club. The Nantucket Yacht Club , for example, requires semi-formal attire for its dinners and cocktail attire including ties for men during its dinner dances and balls. The Hyannis Yacht Club goes into a little more detail. It accepts stylish casual wear including clean, neat jeans and shorts for lunch. For dinner, guests are expected to step it up by leaving the denim at home and wearing sports coats. Different areas of a club may also have different dress rules. Bars and outdoor decks tend to more lax and allow casual clothing.

Sometimes, the easiest way of narrowing down what to wear is to eliminate what you should not wear. This is just a partial list of how not to show up at any kind of yacht club unless you want to be denied admittance or receive a lot of disapproving glares. All rules listed apply to the inside of the club, and can vary for beach and dock rulings.

Flip Flops or Going Barefoot: This rule applies INSIDE the club, or for any meal time. Most people love the beach, but going barefoot is not only unacceptable, but unhygienic.

You'll want to wear appropriate footwear such as sturdy sandals or closed toe shoes. While a lot of children and adults love their flip-flops, they may be a little too casual for a yacht club atmosphere. The most popular choice here is a boat shoe style but a bridle bit driver is always appropriate - check the latest . The lightly worn leather and pencil-curled laces fit the bill in the cool department.

Torn, Stained, or Worn Clothing: Any attire that is showing signs of wear such as rips, stains that never came out, holes, missing buttons, etc. should be left at home.

Baseball Caps and Other Hats: Most yacht clubs prefer that men remove their caps when inside the venue. Save them for the sailing excursions.

Extra points on the water if you rock the Club’s Burgee on the hat!

Swimwear: Just a no-no. Save it for the boat and the beach. A cover-up can be acceptable for the patio.

Going Shirtless: Nope!

Undershirts as Shirts: See above. You may also want to be careful about choosing a t-shirt, particularly one with graphics, when visiting a yacht club. Most prefer that you wear a collared shirt, even if it's a casual one such as a polo shirt.

Tank tops for men and any tank tops for women that are skimpy and don't hide undergarments should be saved for another occasion.

Women have a lot of options when it comes to visiting a yacht club. Linen and cotton make the perfect summer blouses. A light but structured Sleeveless Top paired with a  sweater is perfect for warding off cool sea breezes when you're out on the deck. A polo or collared shirt works well for the yacht club scene as well. You can also consider a dressy blouse that has a little bit of flounce to it. If shorts are allowed for the time and area of the club you're visiting, consider sporting  Sailing  shorts  with a cute anchor embroidery. They're cool, classy, and show off just the right amount of leg. Casual skirts and dresses are perfectly fine as well as long as they're not too short and revealing. If you're attending a party at a yacht club you may need to wear a nice cocktail dress, or a classic Tunic Dress for a day event. Special events such as balls and dinner dances usually specify what is appropriate attire on the invitation.

Don't forget to have fun with accessories! A straw handbag can complete a nautical themed look.

For most casual yacht club occasions, men can't go wrong with a collared shirt and long pants or Cisco Shorts . Pastel and preppy shades such as summer green, hurricane red, and islander blue rule here.

When casual attire is allowed, collared sport or polo shirts are always in fashion. Seersucker and linen shirts are available in several colors and patterns for summer club get-togethers. If jeans are not allowed, seersucker or cotton canvas pants are still casual and comfortable yet dressy enough for all areas of a yacht club. If you really want to show your love of nautical dressing, consider wearing a fun Embroidered Pant !

Or you can opt for solid pants but add some nautical flair with an embroidered belt . Classic summer staples like Seersucker and Madras Patches will make you the talk of the Club, in a good way!

For those chilly sea breezes and evenings, a quarter zip pullover wards off the cool air while keeping you stylish and casual.

It's a good idea to keep a sportcoat and a few ties in your closet just in case the yacht club you're visiting requires it. Opt for a fun all over embroidered jacket, or a Madras Patchwork style to really up your game.

Kids' clothing should conform to the same yacht club rules as established for grown-up guests. If you really want your son to look cute, consider dressing him in the same matching outfit as dad.

What to Wear at a Yacht Club for Lunch – Your Ultimate Guide!

What to wear at a yacht club for lunch

Heading to a yacht club for lunch can be an exciting experience, offering you the chance to relax and dine in an exquisite setting.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular attendee, choosing the proper attire is essential to ensure you fit in and feel comfortable.

This article will explore some of the best apparel choices to keep you looking stylish and appropriate for lunch at a yacht club.

Yacht clubs often uphold a certain level of elegance, but there’s no need to feel intimidated when selecting your outfit.

The key is to find a balance between being well-dressed and enjoying the casual ambiance. So here we go; below, you’ll find everything you need to know on what to wear at a yacht club for lunch.

Table of Contents

Yacht Club Dress Codes

Understanding dress codes.

When attending a lunch at a yacht club, it’s essential to understand the dress code beforehand. Yacht clubs typically have varying dress requirements depending on the event and time of day.

For a lunch event, you’ll most likely encounter a more casual dress code. It’s best to familiarize yourself with the club’s specific guidelines and adhere to them.

Common Yacht Club Dress Codes

At most yacht clubs, there are a few general rules to follow when dressing for lunch:

  • Shirts:  Opt for collared shirts like a classic polo or button-down. Avoid wearing tank tops or T-shirts.
  • Bottoms:  Choose comfortable and well-tailored pants, such as chinos or slacks. Shorts may be acceptable, but ensure they are a reasonable length and not too casual or distressed.
  • Footwear:  Wear closed-toe shoes like loafers or boat shoes. Don’t wear flip-flops. Yacht clubs don’t allow it.
  • Tops:  Select a blouse or a nice polished yet comfortable top. Avoid wearing strapless, revealing, or overly casual tops.
  • Bottoms:  Choose tailored pants, skirts, or dresses that are appropriate in length and style. Shorts are generally discouraged, although some yacht clubs may permit them if they are dressy and tailored.
  • Footwear:  Opt for comfortable and stylish footwear like flats, wedges, or sandals. The same as men, don’t wear flip-flops.

Lunch Clothing Options for Men

Formal attire.

When attending a yacht club for lunch and dressing in formal attire, opt for a classic combination of a crisp collared shirt, slacks, or chinos.

Ties are typically not necessary, but if you want to elevate your look, feel free to include one.

Light colors like white or pale blues are perfect for a summery vibe. Finish your outfit with comfortable loafers or boating shoes for a polished appearance.

Casual Attire

If you prefer a more casual approach, your options expand to include versatile pieces like polo shirts, t-shirts, or even tank tops, as long as they’re not too skimpy. Pair your top with boat shorts or loose pants to ensure comfort and a laid-back aesthetic.

Footwear-wise, swap the loafers for a pair of sandals or boat shoes that are easy to slip on and off at the dock.

When dressing for a yacht club lunch, keep it simple and remember that your comfort is key.

Choose lightweight and breathable fabrics, such as cotton and linen, to ensure you remain cool and stylish while enjoying the sea breeze.

Lunch Clothing Options for Women

Dresses and skirts.

When choosing a dress or skirt for lunch at a yacht club, opt for lightweight fabrics like linen or cotton. Go for knee-length or midi dresses in soft, flowy fabrics that provide comfort and style. A linen dress is a classic option. If you’re leaning more toward skirts, choose one that matches the dress code of the yacht club while still making you feel fashionable and comfortable.

Blouses and Pants

Lunch at a yacht club gives you the opportunity to experiment with different styles of blouses. Cotton and linen are the perfect materials for a summer blouse, providing a casual yet sophisticated look.

Pair your blouse with pants that are comfortable for the yacht setting, like tailored linen pants. Avoid overly tight or restrictive clothing. If you prefer jeans, opt for a dark wash to maintain a polished appearance.

Footwear Suggestions

Men’s footwear.

When it comes to men’s footwear at a yacht club for lunch, you’ll want to focus on practicality and style.

It’s important to wear  non-slip and non-marking outsole shoes to avoid slipping or marking the deck in case you get on board a boat.

Boat shoes are a popular and comfortable choice, offering a fashionable look while being yacht-appropriate.

If you prefer sandals, opt for sturdy ones that provide support and grip. Just remember, some boat owners may require you to leave your shoes on the dock before getting on board a yacht.

So you might want to have an alternative footwear option handy. Lastly, look for shoes with  white outsoles , as they don’t mark the deck, keeping the yacht clean and pristine.

Women’s Footwear

For women, the same basic principles apply. Make sure you choose shoes with a  non-slip and non-marking outsole  to avoid any accidents. Boat shoes and sturdy sandals are both fantastic options for combining style and practicality.

If your lunch takes place on a boat, don’t wear high heels , as they can be dangerous and may damage the deck. As mentioned above, you might be asked to leave your shoes on the dock, so having a backup pair is a good idea.

As with men’s footwear, opting for  white outsoles  ensures you won’t leave any marks on the boat, allowing you to focus on enjoying your lunch at the yacht club.

Accessorizing Your Outfit

When choosing jewelry for a yacht club lunch, aim for elegant but understated pieces. Stick to delicate necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, avoiding anything too flashy or clunky. For example, a simple gold or silver pendant can add the right touch of class without being over the top. Remember, you’re attending a lunch event, so keep your choices on the more casual side.

Hats and Sunglasses

Something that most yacht clubs forbid is wearing a hat inside the building.

This rule applies to both men and women. So if you plan to have lunch at the yacht club’s restaurant, you can’t wear a hat unless you sit on the yacht deck or on a balcony.

However, suppose you are allowed to wear one outside; opt for hats with wide brims or classic Panama hats to shield your face from the sun’s rays.

Sunglasses are another essential for a daytime event like a yacht club lunch. Look for pairs that offer full UV protection and complement your outfit. Classic shapes like aviators or wayfarers are versatile and timeless choices.

Just make sure your sunglasses don’t clash with your hat, and you’ll be well on your way to a perfectly accessorized outfit for a yacht club lunch.

Considering the Weather

When planning your outfit for a yacht club lunch, it’s important to consider the weather. In warmer temperatures, opt for light, breathable fabrics like linen or cotton.

A short-sleeved polo shirt or a blouse is an excellent choice for staying cool and comfortable. Women can also wear light sundresses or shorts with a tank top that isn’t too revealing.

In cooler or unpredictable weather, layering is key. Start with a collared shirt or a light blouse, and add a sweater or light jacket if needed.

Don’t forget to bring an umbrella or a water-resistant coat if there’s a chance of rain, and always have a pair of sunglasses on hand for those unexpectedly sunny moments.

When choosing your footwear, remember that you may be walking on wet surfaces or spending time outside. Avoid flip-flops and opt for non-slipping boating shoes , like Sperry, that offer both style and functionality. These shoes come in numerous styles, making it easy to find the perfect match for your outfit.

What to Avoid Wearing

When heading to a yacht club for lunch, there are a few fashion faux pas you should be mindful of. Remember, yacht clubs have a certain level of sophistication, and dressing appropriately is crucial.

First and foremost, avoid wearing any torn, stained, or worn clothing. Clothes with rips, holes, missing buttons, and stubborn stains are not suitable for the yacht club setting. Your outfit should be clean, well-maintained, and presentable.

As tempting as it may be to flaunt your summer style, steer clear of revealing clothing. Avoid items like denim shorts, tank tops, mini skirts, and cut-off shirts. Instead, opt for more modest attire that allows you to stay cool and look chic.

While you may love your comfortable flip-flops or sneakers, it’s not allowed to wear them to a yacht club lunch. These casual footwear options can come across as too casual and out of place. Instead, choose shoes that are stylish and comfortable but more refined.

Additionally, leave your baseball caps and other hats at home. Most yacht clubs prefer that men remove their caps when inside the venue, so it’s best to stick to this etiquette and keep the caps for actual sailing excursions.

Lastly, avoid dressing too casually with clothing like wrinkled or sloppy attire. Yacht club lunches often have a semi-formal or smart casual dress code, so make sure your outfit is polished and well-balanced between casual and formal elements.

Questions People Forten Ask

Q: What is the typical dress code for a yacht club lunch?

Yacht clubs often have a more relaxed dress code during lunchtime. Stylish casual wear, including clean, neat jeans and shorts, is usually acceptable. However, it’s always a good idea to check with the specific yacht club for their dress code guidelines.

Q: How formal should my attire be for a yacht club lunch?

Although the attire for a yacht club lunch is less formal than dinner, you should still aim to look polished and presentable. Opt for refined and comfortable clothing, such as dressy shorts, skirts, or pants paired with an elegant top. You may also want to consider wearing a light blazer to elevate your look.

Q: Are there any specific clothing items to avoid at a yacht club?

When attending a yacht club event, it is best to avoid overly casual clothing items, such as flip-flops, athletic wear, or torn clothing. It’s also recommended to leave the denim at home when attending a yacht club dinner, as mentioned in The Sailor ‘s Style Guide: How to Dress at a Yacht Club. Different areas of the club may have specific dress rules, so it’s always good to inquire ahead of time.

Q: How does a daytime yacht club event differ in dress code?

Daytime events at yacht clubs tend to have a more relaxed dress code compared to evening events. For day events, it is appropriate to wear casual yet polished clothing like shorts, skirts, and light dresses. However, as the sun sets and nighttime events begin, expect the dress code to become more formal, often requiring sports coats or cocktail attire.

Q: Do yacht clubs have a specific dress code to follow when dining?

Yacht clubs usually have a more formal dress code for dining, especially during dinner. In most cases, sports coats are expected, and denim should be avoided. For ladies, sophisticated dresses or skirts with elegant tops are appropriate. Check with the yacht club you are attending to ensure you follow their specific rules and guidelines for dining attire.

Final Words!

Now that you have an idea of the appropriate attire, you’re set to enjoy a delightful lunch at the yacht club. Dress to impress, adhere to the dress code, and don’t forget to indulge in the delicious food and beautiful views the club has to offer.

4 thoughts on “What to Wear at a Yacht Club for Lunch – Your Ultimate Guide!”

Loved your article.  It’s very well put together and will be really helpful to someone who will be attending a lunch as a guest at a yacht club.   Even though many clubs have relaxed their dress code, it’s so much nicer to dress well for lunch at such a nice venue.  Your article will make sure that a new visitor to the yacht club doesn’t make an error and inadvertently break the dress code.

Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad to hear that you found my article helpful and informative. I completely agree that dressing well for lunch at a yacht club is a great way to show respect for the venue and the occasion. While some clubs have relaxed their dress codes, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and dress appropriately. I’m happy to hear that my article will help new visitors avoid any potential dress code mishaps. Thank you again for your feedback, and I wish you all the best in your future yacht club visits!

What a beautiful website! This “how-to” type post was very informative about how to dress if you are having lunch at a yacht club. There are many practical suggestions that will make a first time visitor feel comfortable. This article provides all one needs to know about proper dress etiquette for yacht clubs in general.  Yacht clubs promote boating and cruising, and provide social meeting place for the boating community. Do you have to own a boat or sea vessel to join a yacht club? Do yacht clubs screen potential members financial standing or backgrounds before they are accepted? Do potential members have to be sponsored by a member of the yacht club to join? All I need now is to be invited to lunch at our local yacht club. I know just what to wear. Thanks.

Thank you for your comment! I am glad to hear that you found my website beautiful and informative, particularly the “how-to” post on dressing for lunch at a yacht club. I strive to provide practical suggestions that will make first-time visitors feel comfortable and confident in any setting. As for your questions about yacht clubs, boat owners are not always required to join, and some clubs do screen potential members based on financial standing or background. Additionally, some clubs may require sponsorship from a current member in order to join. I hope that this information is helpful, and I wish you the best of luck in being invited to lunch at your local yacht club!

The education of Boris Johnson, the UK’s new Prime Minister

The education of Boris Johnson, the UK's new Prime Minister

Many words are ascribed to Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, Britain’s new Conservative party leader and Prime Minister who succeeded Theresa May in the UK’s top government post.

He has a monumental task ahead. His predecessor spent her last three years in office maneuvering the country’s exit from the European Union – Johnson has less than four months to do so before the final deadline set for October 31, 2019.

Supporting this transition, like that of any job candidate, is Johnson’s education and experience. For the latter, Johnson has three decades behind him in a range of fields, from politics to journalism to presenter of a popular history television show, The Dream of Rome . But we know him most as the two-time London Mayor and later, as the foreign secretary under May’s premiership.

In both posts, Johnson was described as “shambolic,” “clownish” and “a buffoon”. Presiding over the 2012 London Olympics and unofficially leading the “Vote Leave” campaign are pivotal points of his recent career, but it is his rumpled appearance, especially his hair, and shenanigans that tend to steal the spotlight.

But analysts say his antics could have been cleverly calculated to capture the public eye. In an age that has seen former reality show host Donald Trump enter the White House, Johnson is said to be one of the same cut, presenting himself as a ‘bumbling idiot’ to counteract his elitist upbringing. Compared to his competitor Jeremy Hunt, Boris is pretty unforgettable, and so, we wonder whether his ultimate victory was all a genius act to get into Number 10 Downing Street…

Our early education is one of the biggest influences that helps form our adult self. Here, we take a look at Johnson’s education journey to see who Britain’s new Prime Minister really is and the potential wider implications for the country:

1. European School, Brussels I

Boris Johnson education

Born in New York City to British parents, Johnson’s childhood was global in nature, following his parents’ education (his father at Columbia University and later post-doctoral research at the London School of Economics; his mother at Oxford University) and career, the family shuffled between the UK and US, starting from Columbia University to Oxford University, then the World Bank in Washington DC before moving on to the US state of Connecticut and later, back to London.

At age 10, Boris relocated to Brussels where his father, Stanley Johnson, was made Head of the European Commission’s newly-established Prevention of Pollution Division.

Founded in 1953, European Schools refers to a network of private schools set up in EU member states, providing children with a multilingual and multicultural education at nursery, primary and secondary levels. It offers the European Baccalaureate diploma, a higher education qualifiying certificate awarded to those who complete coursework and exams for a minimum of 10 subjects and have full proficiency in two languages.

The book, Just Boris: The Irresistible Rise of a Political Celebrity , authored by Sonia Purcell, describes “the clever young blond” and his time here:

“Meanwhile, Boris spent two years in Brussels, learning to be a ‘good European’ and rapidly becoming fluent in accent-less French. Although as an adult he has frequently played down his gift for foreign languages – adopting when it suits the classic ‘Brit abroad’ assault on French vowels and syntax – he is virtually bi-lingual and proficient in three more languages.”

2. Ashdown House

Boris Johnson education

After his mother was hospitalised for a nervous breakdown, Johnson and his siblings were sent to Ashdown House. The preparatory boarding school in East Sussex is credited as the place that “played a large part in creating the Boris we know today”. His recollection of his time there evokes an “unusually emotional” reaction in him.

Corporal punishment could explain why. Hearing “small boys being terrorised and battered” outraged and distressed him, according to media baron Conrad Black, who later employed him at the right-wing newspaper, The Spectator .

It was here that the dishevelled persona was created. As a survival tactic (he was teased for his Turkish roots and being a foreigner from across the Channel) he soon adopted a startling change in character, one possibly inspired by PG Wodehouse’s stories of a 1930s English eccentric who is bumbling but “fantastically well-read”.

He excelled in Greek and Latin, “outclassing” those who have studied the subjects longer than he did. Later, he won a scholarship to Eton College.

3. Eton College

Educating 20 former Prime Ministers , this iconic institution is described as “the nursery of England’s gentlemen” and “the chief nurse of England’s statesmen”. With its list of alumni including Princes William and Harry, Britain’s most famous public boys’ school is also its most notable symbol of elitisim and the British ruling classes. The ‘Curriculum’ page of the school’s website states:

“When a boy leaves Eton, he will have five years’ experience of academic, sporting, dramatic, artistic, musical and, perhaps most importantly, personal growth to look back on, the greater part of the latter having been centred on his house and the friendships he has made there. He will almost certainly go on to university.”

While Eton is attributed to be the grounds where Johnson’s flamboyant persona truly came to be, he attained several academic achievements, too. He became a “formidable debater”, won prizes in English and Classics and became editor of the school newspaper, The Chronicle .

But his many co-curricular activities soon got school administrators complaining about him being late, not turning in work, being disorganised and his doubtful “commitment to the real business of scholarship”.

Despite this, he won a scholarship to read Literae Humaniores, a four-year course in Classics (Latin and Ancient Greek), at Balliol College, Oxford.

4. University of Oxford

“From Oxford University, Mr Johnson had developed his popular persona and learned how to adapt to win – useful lessons.” How did @BorisJohnson ‘s university days 👨‍🎓 make him fit for the top job? https://t.co/1Ykd3nki9l pic.twitter.com/cUT3PPEvV8 — Sky News (@SkyNews) July 23, 2019

His contemporaries included former Prime Minister David Cameron, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt (a Magdalen College alum, who studied PPE), BBC political editor Nick Robinson, Clinton press secretary George Stephanopoulos, US pollster Frank Luntz and newly-minted Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Michael Gove. May, who he succeeded, was also an Oxonian.

He is the fourth Balliol College-educated Prime Minister, following Herbert Asquith, Harold Macmillan and Edward Heath. Balliol also produced literary giants such as Matthew Arnold, Graham Greene and Robert Browning. It is notable that Johnson chose to study Balliol, which, while known for its strong reputation for Classics, is also known as a “haven for bright young Lefties instead of dim hoorays”, an odd pairing given Johnson’s current right-wing tendencies.

Here, Johnson co-edited the university’s satirical magazine, Tributary . He ran and was elected secretary of the Oxford Union in 1984 and President of the Oxford Union in 1986.

His tutors remembered him as “a good egg”, destined for a first. However, he graduated with a 2:1 and a deep-held disappointment for not achieving one.

Who Is Boris Johnson?

After beginning his career as a journalist, Boris Johnson became a prominent editor while simultaneously building his political base as a Conservative MP. A surprise winner of London's mayoral race in 2008, the famously disheveled politician championed the "Leave" movement of the Brexit referendum in 2016 before spending two years as foreign secretary. Elevated to prime minister in 2019, Johnson engineered the U.K.'s break from the European Union but was criticized for breaking Covid-19 lockdown rules and resigned his premiership in July 2022.

How Old Is Boris Johnson?

Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson was born in New York City on June 19, 1964.

Parents and Siblings

His sister, Rachel , went on to earn acclaim as a journalist; his middle brother, Jo, became a member of Parliament and government minister; and his youngest brother, Leo, embarked on a career in finance. Johnson also has two half-siblings, Maximilian and Julia, from Stanley's second marriage.

Early Years and Education

Thanks to his father's varied professional pursuits, Johnson moved 32 times by age 14. The family's travels included stops in London, where Johnson attended Primrose Hill Primary School, and Brussels, where he was enrolled at the European School.

Affected by a medical condition known as "glue ear," which left him partially deaf until around age eight, Johnson was said to be a quiet, studious boy. He began emerging from his shell after being sent away to Ashdown House , a boarding school in East Sussex, where he studied ancient Greek and Latin and developed a love for rugby.

At Eton College, Johnson dropped his first name and honed a more extroverted personality. He headed the debate society, was named captain of school and joined the exclusive "Pop" club, though he also rankled faculty to the point where one housemaster criticized his "disgracefully cavalier attitude."

After a gap year spent teaching in Australia, Johnson returned to England to study classics at the University of Oxford's Balliol College. A standout among fellow future stars, he became president of the Oxford Union, co-edited the satirical publication Tributary and joined the Bullingdon Club before earning an upper second-class degree in 1987.

Journalist and Politician

Johnson began his journalism career as a graduate trainee for The Times but was fired the following year after attributing a fabricated quote to his godfather, renowned academic Colin Lucas.

Landing on his feet as the Brussels correspondent for The Daily Telegraph , Johnson carved out a reputation for his exaggerated but entertaining critiques of the European Commission. He later likened the experience to "chucking these rocks over the garden wall and [listening] to this amazing crash from the greenhouse next door over in England."

Johnson served as the Telegraph 's chief political columnist and an assistant editor from 1994-99 and then as editor of The Spectator , a right-wing magazine, until 2005. During this time, he also began writing a regular automotive column for GQ and saw his celebrity grow via well-received appearances on the popular quiz show "Have I Got News for You."

Johnson also launched his political career as a Conservative MP from Henley, Oxfordshire, in 2001. Forced from his position as party vice-chair and shadow arts minister after lying about an affair in 2004, he rebounded to win reelection the following year and became shadow higher education minister under Conservative leader David Cameron.

Mayor of London

Named the Tory candidate for London mayor in 2007, Johnson earned his first taste of international attention for his disheveled appearance and energetic but bumbling ways. He ultimately defeated the Labour incumbent, Ken Livingstone, to become the city's second elected mayor in 2008.

Recovering from a chaotic start in which several top aides resigned, Johnson introduced the "Boris bikes" cycle-sharing program in 2010 and the new-and-improved "Boris bus" fleet in early 2012.

Although he was criticized for his response to the 2011 London riots, he held on to defeat Livingstone and earn a second term in office in 2012.

Johnson subsequently saw the completion of the ArcelorMittal Orbit observation tower and Emirates Air Line cable cars in time for the 2012 London Olympics, which provided the lasting image of the mayor stuck on a zip line above Victoria Park. Other ambitious projects, such as the "Boris island" airport and garden bridge over the River Thames, never came to fruition despite his efforts.

Brexit Campaign

Along with taking on another elected post as MP of Uxbridge and South Ruislip in 2015, Johnson spent his final weeks as mayor engaged in the contentious issue of Brexit, a referendum on whether to continue the United Kingdom’s membership in the European Union.

Initially unsure which side to take, Johnson eventually emerged as the face of the "Leave" campaign, in direct opposition to Prime Minister Cameron. His populist message for an independent U.K. resonated with the public, resulting in the electorate's historic vote to leave the E.U. on June 23, 2016.

Johnson subsequently launched a bid to replace Cameron as the Conservative leader but bowed out by the end of June, paving the way for Theresa May to take over as prime minister.

Foreign Secretary

Named May's secretary of state for foreign and Commonwealth affairs in July 2016, Johnson soon ran into trouble with his off-the-cuff commentary. After initially defending the sale of arms to Saudi Arabia, he accused the Middle Eastern country of "puppeteering and playing proxy wars." Later, his incorrect assessment that a British-Iranian national was "teaching" when arrested for spying in Iran reportedly bolstered the accusations that she was spreading propaganda.

Johnson dutifully represented the country's interests in rebuking the alleged Russian use of a deadly nerve agent and supporting the Iran nuclear deal. But he also feuded with his boss over her attempts to negotiate the U.K.'s break from the E.U. Dismayed by the proposed compromises, Johnson stepped down as foreign secretary in July 2018.

U.K. Prime Minister

After May resigned in May 2019 over an inability to forge a Brexit agreement, Johnson again sought control of the party leadership. This time, he emerged victorious after promising to pull out of the E.U. by October 31, regardless of whether or not a deal was in place, and took over as prime minister on July 24, 2019.

Johnson quickly found himself at odds with lawmakers after asking Queen Elizabeth II to suspend Parliament until mid-October, with critics charging that he was narrowing the opportunity for opposition to his Brexit plans. Parliament subsequently passed a bill that required the PM to request an extension for the U.K.'s departure by October 19 if he was unable to broker an agreement with the E.U. or earn the necessary consent for a no-deal Brexit.

While Johnson was forced to seek the extension, he was successful in bringing his case to the people with a snap election. Riding the slogan "get Brexit done," the Conservative Party proved the decisive winner in the December 2019 general election, giving Johnson time to fine-tune the minutiae of a final deal after the country's formal exit from the E.U. on January 31, 2020.

Meanwhile, a new crisis emerged that year with the rapid onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Initially reluctant to curb the flow of business and public interaction, Johnson finally announced the closure of stores and restaurants on March 20 before imposing strict lockdown measures a few days later. He then landed in intensive care after contracting the virus at the end of the month.

Although the U.K. became the first Western nation to greenlight a vaccine in December 2020, it also became the first European nation to surpass 100,000 casualties from the illness in January 2021. Later that year, a report slammed the " public health failures " in the country brought about by governmental delays in enacting social distancing guidelines.

Johnson’s problems compounded by April 2022 when he was fined for breaking lockdown rules. The following month, he was named a primary culprit in a series of lockdown-defying social gatherings among government employees, a scandal dubbed " Partygate ."

After he survived a no-confidence vote from party members in June, the revelation that Johnson was aware of sexual misconduct allegations against deputy chief whip Chris Pincher triggered a wave of government resignations headlined by Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid. On July 7, 2022, Johnson bowed to the pressure to resign as prime minister .

Although former Foreign Secretary Liz Truss took over as party leader and premier, she, too, resigned less than two months later after several public missteps. Initially interested in reclaiming the job, Johnson withdrew his name from consideration shortly before Sunak was announced as the new PM on October 24, 2022.

Johnson has authored several books, dating back to his tales from the campaign trail with Friends, Voters, Countrymen (2001). Other works include the novel Seventy-Two Virgins (2003); an examination of antiquity with The Dream of Rome (2006); a book of poetry and illustrations with The Perils of the Pushy Parents (2007); and the biography The Churchill Factor (2014).

Wives and Children

Johnson has been married three times and fathered seven children. After meeting Allegra Mostyn-Owen at Oxford, the two were married in 1987 before having the union annulled in 1993. That year Johnson wed lawyer Marina Wheeler, with whom he had daughters Lara and Cassia and sons Milo and Theodore.

Following the revelation that he had another daughter, Stephanie, with journalist Helen MacIntyre, Johnson and Wheeler divorced in 2018. The prime minister then married public relations executive Carrie Symonds in 2021 and added to his family with son Wilfred and daughter Romy.

Key Facts & Information

Early life and education.

  • Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, or Boris Johnson, was born on June 19, 1964 in the Upper East Side of Manhattan , New York City. He is the son of Stanley Johnson, a former member of the European Parliament and descended from Turkish ancestry, and Charlotte Maria Offow Johnson, a renowned British artist.
  • Boris has two younger brothers, Leo and Jo, and a sister, Rachel. Johnson grew up in New York City , London , and Brussels .
  • As a child, Johnson was primarily raised by his mother as his father was regularly absent. He was quiet, studious, and grew up with his siblings as his constant companions. Johnson also had deafness, resulting in several operations to insert grommets into his ears.
  • He attended Ashdown House, a preparatory boarding school in England , and won a scholarship to Eton College. He later studied classics at Balliol College, Oxford, while he was the president of the Oxford Union. He was awarded an upper second-class degree in 1987.
  • After graduating, Johnson worked as a management consultant for a brief period before pursuing a career in journalism.
  • He began as a reporter at The Times in 1987 but was fired for inventing a quote by historian Colin Lucas.
  • The struggling reporter moved to Daily Telegraph to be its assistant editor, having met its editor, Max Hastings, during his presidency at Oxford Union. In 1997, he transferred to The Spectator and became its editor from 1999 until 2005.

Political Career

  • Johnson’s first attempt to enter politics was in 1997 when he was selected as the conservative candidate for Clwyd South in the House of Commons. However, he lost to the Labour Party incumbent, Martyn Jones.
  • After his defeat, he became more visible in television shows, appearing in the BBC talk program Have I Got News for You. Outspoken, boyish, and sometimes controversial, he became a favorite on British talk shows.
  • He was invited to stand for Parliament in 2001 for Henley-on-Thames and won against Michael Heseltine.
  • The new MP became one of the country’s most recognized politicians as he continues to frequently appear on British TV shows and be an editor of the Spectator
  • However, not everything he did became popular with the audience. He was once forced to apologize to Liverpool due to an insensitive editorial in The Spectator.
  • In 2004, allegations of an extramarital affair between Johnson and a journalist surfaced, resulting in his dismissal as shadow arts minister. Despite these public rebukes, he was re-elected to his parliamentary position in 2005.
  • In July 2007, he entered into the mayoral race against Labour incumbent Ken Livingstone. This time, he proved to his people that he was a substantial politician by focusing on issues of crime and transportation.
  • After a tightly contested election, he won on May 1, 2008, and as one of his campaign promises, he stepped down from being an MP the following month.
  • After four years, he again bested Livingstone by winning the mayoral election. It was one of the bright spots for the Conservative Party as they lost more than 800 seats in England, Scotland, and Wales.
  • While holding a political position, Johnson continued to write. His books Lend Me Your Ears (2003), a collection of essays; Seventy-two Virgins (2004), a novel; and The Dream of Rome (2006), a historical survey of the Roman Empire. He added to his collection in 2014 the book, The Churchill Factor: How One Man Made History .

Returning to Parliament

  • In 2015, Johnson returned to Parliament after winning the west London seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip. There were speculations that he wanted to return to Parliament to replace Cameron as Conservative Leader and Prime Minister.
  • Johnson is probably most famous for endorsing Vote Leave in the “Out” for the 2016 United Kingdom European Union membership referendum. He thinks that Cameron’s warning about leaving was “greatly over-exaggerated.” His announcement resulted in the pound sterling slumped against the US dollar, reaching its lowest level since March 2009.
  • Johnson’s campaign prevailed. Cameron resigned as Conservative leader and Prime Minister making Johnson the front-runner to succeed him. However, after his key ally Michael Gove turned his back on him, Johnson declared that he would not stand in the Conservative leadership election and endorsed Andrea Leadsom instead. Nonetheless, she dropped out of the race a week later, leaving Theresa May to be elected uncontested.
  • Theresa May appointed Johnson as Foreign Secretary in July 2016. Many journalists and foreign politicians thought that Johnson was unqualified because of his history of controversial statements about other countries. Johnson’s tenure as a foreign secretary was full of criticism, tension, and unpopular actions and statements. On July 9, Johnson resigned as foreign secretary. He believed that May was too collaborative with the European Union in Brexit negotiations.
  • Johnson continued to be a persistent critic of May’s attempt to push her version of Brexit through Parliament. On March 27, 2019, in an effort for the House of Common’s support to her plan, she promised to step down as Prime Minister. Most of the party refused to back her plan. She stepped down as a party leader on June 7 but remained as the caretaker prime minister until her party chose her successor.
  • Johnson found himself one of the ten candidates to replace May and became the official Prime Minister on July 24, 2019.
  • During his term, he continued to fight for Brexit, which was slowly losing support. The new Prime Minister had requested the queen to prorogue the Parliament, which was granted, to cut the time MPs would have to take to prevent no-deal Brexit.
  • He also proposed a snap election and asked the EU to extend their deadline. Winning another 365 seats of the conservative party increased its presence in the House of Commons. It ultimately became the decisive factor in guiding Johnson’s preferred version of Brexit to its victory. The United Kingdom formally exited from the EU on January 31, 2020.

The Covid-19 Pandemic

  • Much of the details of Brexit needed to be worked out the following year. But it had to take a backseat as the world battles the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Johnson’s government initially did not take the consequences of the spread of the virus seriously. However, in mid-March 2020, the potentially deadly disease began to spread wildly in Britain. Johnson enforced mask-wearing and social distancing along with lockdowns, including closing schools, restaurants, and other businesses.
  • Johnson himself contracted the virus at the end of March. He was hospitalized and later spent three nights in the ICU. His foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, replaced him while he was incapacitated.
  • On April 12, he returned to the office with a grateful Easter message to the country, thanking the health workers who had saved his life and commending the National Health Service (NHS) for its response to the health crisis.
  • Johnson initiated several at-home orders in some regions through the coming year, trying to limit the virus’s casualties. Aided by government funding, British scientists were one of the first to test one of the first effective vaccines. They were also the first country to deploy The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine that quickly began the national immunization program.

Personal Details

  • Johnson married Allegra Mostyn-Owen in 1987 but the marriage ended in divorce in 1993. Twelve days later, he married a barrister and a family friend, Marina Wheeler, to whom he had his four children.
  • While he was the editor of the Spectator , Johnson was accused of having an affair with its columnist and later with a The Guardian journalist.
  • In 2018, Johnson and Wheeler announced that they separated “several months ago” and began their divorce. It was finalized by November 2020.
  • Johnson began living with Carrie Symonds in 2019. They announced their engagement late in the year and that they are expecting a baby. On May 29, 2021, Johnson married Symonds in a secret ceremony at Westminster Cathedral. They announced that they are expecting another child on July 31, 2021.

LONDON (AP) — He was the mayor who basked in the glory of hosting the 2012 London Olympics, and the man who led the Conservatives to a thumping election victory on the back of his promise to “get Brexit done.”

But Boris Johnson’s time as prime minister was marred by his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and a steady stream of ethics allegations, from alcohol-fueled government parties that broke lockdown rules to how he handled a sexual misconduct scandal involving a senior party lawmaker.

Here is a timeline of events relating to Johnson’s political career :

2001-2008: Serves as a member of Parliament in the House of Commons representing the constituency of Henley.

2008-2016: Serves as London mayor, overseeing 2012 London Olympics.

2016: Co-leader of the campaign to take Britain out of the European Union, in opposition to then-Prime Minister David Cameron, a fellow Conservative. Cameron resigns after voters approve Brexit in a national referendum on June 23, 2016.

2016-2018: Serves as Foreign Secretary under Cameron’s successor, Prime Minister Theresa May. Johnson resigns in July 2018 in opposition to May’s strategy for a “soft” Brexit that would maintain close ties with the EU.

June 7, 2019: Theresa May resigns as Conservative Party leader over her failure to persuade Parliament to back the Brexit agreement she negotiated with the EU. The party is split between those who back May and hard-liners, led by Johnson, who are willing to risk a no-deal Brexit in order to wring concessions from the EU.

July 23, 2019: Johnson is elected Conservative Party leader in a vote by party members. He takes office as prime minister the next day, inheriting a minority government that relies on votes from Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party to pass legislation. Johnson insists Britain will leave the EU on Oct. 31, with or without a deal.

Aug. 28, 2019: Johnson announces he will shut down Parliament until mid-October, giving opponents less time to thwart a no-deal Brexit.

Sept. 3, 2019: Twenty-one rebel Conservative Party lawmakers support legislation requiring the government to seek an extension of Brexit negotiations if it can’t negotiate an agreement with the EU. The measure passes and the rebels are expelled from the party.

Sept. 5, 2019: Johnson asserts he would rather be “dead in a ditch” than ask the EU for another extension.

Sept. 24, 2019: U.K. Supreme Court rules government’s suspension of Parliament was unlawful.

Oct. 19, 2019: Johnson asks the EU to delay Brexit again. New deadline set for Jan. 31.

Nov. 6, 2019: Parliament is dissolved and early elections are set for mid-December as Johnson seeks a mandate for his Brexit strategy.

Dec. 12, 2019: Johnson wins an 80-seat majority in the general election, giving him the backing to push through Brexit legislation. The victory makes Johnson the most electorally successful Conservative leader since Margaret Thatcher.

Jan. 23, 2020: The Brexit deal becomes law after approval by U.K. Parliament. European Parliament approves the deal six days later.

March 23, 2020: Johnson places U.K. in first lockdown due to COVID-19.

April 5, 2020: Johnson hospitalized and later moved to intensive care with COVID-19. He is released from the hospital on April 12, thanking the nurses who sat with him through the night to make sure he kept breathing.

Nov. 3-4, 2021: Johnson’s government orders Conservative lawmakers to support a change in ethics rules to delay the suspension of Owen Paterson, a Johnson supporter who had been censured for breaching lobbying rules. The measure passes. A day later, facing an angry backlash from lawmakers of all parties, Johnson reverses course and allows lawmakers to vote on Paterson’s suspension. Paterson resigns.

Nov. 30, 2021: Allegations surface that government officials attended parties in government offices during November and December 2020 in violation of COVID-19 lockdown rules. The scandal grows to reports of more than a dozen parties. Johnson denies the allegations, but opposition leaders criticize the government for breaking the law as people across the country made sacrifices to combat the pandemic.

Dec. 8, 2021: Johnson authorizes investigation into the scandal, dubbed “Partygate.” Pressure builds for a leadership challenge, but fizzles.

Feb. 3: Johnson’s longtime aide, Munira Mirza, quits Downing Street, followed by three other top aides.

March 23: The government announces a mid-year spending plan that’s criticized for doing too little to help people struggling with the soaring cost of living. Treasury chief Rishi Sunak refuses to delay a planned income tax increase or impose a windfall profits tax on oil and gas companies benefiting from rising energy prices.

April 9: Johnson meets Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv, pledging a new package of military and economic support. The move helps bolster Johnson and his supporters, who argue the government should not focus on domestic political squabbles.

April 12: Johnson is fined 50 pounds ($63) for attending one of the lockdown parties. Opposition parties characterize him as the first U.K. prime minister in history shown to have broken the law while in office. Johnson apologizes but insists he didn’t know he was breaking the rules.

May 22,: Findings of the “Partygate” investigation are published, detailing 16 gatherings at Johnson’s home and office and other government offices between May 2020 and April 2021. The report details excessive drinking among some of Johnson’s staff, at a time when millions of people were unable to see friends and family.

May 26: The government reverses course on its tax decision on oil and gas companies and announces plans for a 25% windfall profits levy.

June 6: Johnson narrowly wins a vote of no confidence, with Conservative lawmakers voting 211 to 148 to back him. But the scale of the revolt — some 41% voted against him — shakes his grip on power.

June 15: Christopher Geidt quits as ethics adviser to Johnson, accusing the Conservative government of planning to flout conduct rules.

June 24: Johnson’s Conservatives lose two former strongholds to opposition parties in special elections.

June 29: Parliament’s cross-party Privileges Committee issues a call for evidence for a probe into whether Johnson misled Parliament over lockdown parties.

June 30: Chris Pincher resigns as Conservative deputy chief whip amid allegations he assaulted two guests at a private members’ club in London. Previous sexual misconduct allegations emerge about Pincher. Questions swirl about whether Johnson knew about the claims when Pincher was given the job.

July 5: Johnson apologizes for his handling of the Pincher scandal and says he had forgotten about being told of the allegations. Two of Johnson’s most senior Cabinet ministers, Treasury chief Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid, quit the government.

July 6: Some three dozen junior ministers resign from the government, attacking Johnson’s leadership.

July 7: Johnson resigns as Conservative Party leader, but plans to remain as prime minister while the leadership contest is held.

The Classical Education of Boris Johnson

Aug 5, 2019

The Classical Education of Boris Johnson

The Classics are Beyond Useful

Many people think that a classical education–particularly one with a heavy focus on Greek and Latin–has little technical use in the modern world.

Classical educators rebut this by proving there is practical use and defend the study of the classics for precisely that reason.

You’ve heard it…

“Greek and Latin permeate modern languages like French and Spanish. They can be used in medical and legal terms. They even increase student SAT Scores!”

Yet, this usefulness-based view of the classics, whether it is out of ignorance (like its critics) or genuine appreciation for results (like those who cite it), misses their true gift.

The Education of Boris Johnson

Before he started a career of editing, writing, and later public service, Johnson was classically trained at a British boarding school in Eton. He then went on to study at Oxford University.

His study of the classics has had much “practical” use. His magniloquent eloquence , along with his charm, is widely considered the main reason he is able to form coalitions and win over the majority of his country.

But is this the reason why he studied the classics? If he did, I don’t think he would be taking the time to attend the Writer’s Festival in Melbourne to dazzle them with a recitation of the first 100 Lines of the Iliad before becoming Prime Minister!

Johnson represents the best case for the classics.  By learning them, we achieve an even higher good than their practical effects. We get what Aristotle described as a thing “desirable in itself and never for the sake of something else.”

How the Classics Can Serve Us

Johnson gets the most pleasure from knowing the classics because he knows them. He gets to recite them in the moments where “ the crocodile is at the foot of the mangrove .” He can remember them even when there is important business to be done. They are a source of clarity, comfort, and perspective that others who do not read them do not have.

Through the classics, we can discover that life is meant to be enjoyed deeply and that language is a reliable and effective guide.

It not only separates us from the animals but is a great endowment of God to his servants : “The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary” (Isaiah 50:4).

The tradition of the classics provide something which is difficult to measure. But their import is greater than anything else we can measure. SAT scores and medical terminology are only incidental in what they do for students. Boris Johnson helps show us why.

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

Boris Johnson has promised to increase investment in English schools substantially above the expected rate of inflation over the next three years, in a fresh sign he is gearing up for a general election campaign bolstered by large spending commitments.

The proposed rises amount to 6 per cent in 2020-21 and nearly 5 per cent in the following two years to bring the school budget up to £52.2bn in 2022-23, ending a decade of budgetary squeezes. Further education will get a £400m boost.

However, the UK prime minister’s pledge will not eliminate funding pressures on all schools immediately.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies, a think-tank, said total school spending per pupil in England had fallen by 8 per cent in real terms between 2009-10 and 2018-19, and reversing the cuts would cost £4.7bn a year by 2022-23.

Paul Whiteman, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, gave a cautious welcome to the spending promise, saying: “After five years of disappointment on funding . . . we hope that this announcement is as good as it looks . . . [It] appears to repair some of the damage that has been done to the education system since the cuts began in 2010.”

But he pointed out that many schools would still struggle to cope in the absence of extra funding during the current financial year, and said he would study the figures closely. “It would be disastrous if the detail didn’t live up to the £14.4bn headline,” he said.

The new funding, which covers pupils aged from five to 16, as well as students in the sixth form and further education, will be followed by reforms to teachers’ pay.

Pupils aged over 16 receive lower funding than their younger counterparts, and support drops further if they remain in study after 18, a source of particular concern to further education colleges.

The Department for Education said there would be “measures to ensure standards in schools and colleges continue to rise, and action to tackle poor behaviour and bullying”.

Under Mr Johnson’s plans, every secondary school will receive a minimum of £5,000 per pupil up to the age of 16 next year and every primary school at least £4,000 from 2021-22. There will be £700m extra for children with special educational needs and disabilities in 2020-21 and a shift in the national funding formula to redistribute extra money to areas which have been historically underfunded.

“We should not accept the idea that there can be ‘winners or losers’ when it comes to our children’s futures,” the prime minister said. “That’s why we are providing additional funding now and for the future for every school, with those historically underfunded receiving the greatest increase.”

Sajid Javid, the chancellor, said: “We said our priorities were police, healthcare and education, and that’s what we are delivering at next week’s spending round.”

Kevin Courtney, joint general secretary of the National Education Union, called the new money “very positive” and said it showed recognition of efforts by unions, parents and councillors despite dismissals by government in the past that there was any problem with education funding.

Boost for further education

Sixth form colleges and other further education institutions will receive a boost in next week’s spending review to support post-16 training, as focus increases around revitalising vocational education.

Sajid Javid, the Chancellor, agreed a £190m increase for the 2020-21 financial year in the “base rate” paid for each student, which has declined for post-16s relative to younger students over the past decade.

Another £120m will go to supporting expensive but high-quality courses such as engineering, with the remainder of the extra support going for students resitting GCSEs in colleges, the introduction of vocational T levels and the recruitment and training of teachers.

Gavin Williamson, education secretary, said: “As former FE students, the chancellor and I both know first-hand how important the further education sector is so I’m really pleased that today that government is giving our sixth forms and colleges a major funding boost — the single biggest annual uplift since 2010.”

David Hughes, head of the Association of Colleges, called the funding “the first meaningful investment in further education for 16 to 19 year olds for more than 10 years.”

He added: “It’s not enough to reverse the decade of cuts, nor to properly stabilise the sector for the future, but it is a good start.”

It is also in the interest of the entire country, because these young people will have the skills, knowledge and opportunity needed to fulfil their future potential, secure the good jobs needed to support our economy, and fill local skills gaps.

Through the Bill, the government will raise education standards across the country via a range of measures including supporting schools to join strong, multi-academy trusts, introducing registers for children not in school and giving Ofsted more powers to crack down on unregistered schools operating illegally.

It will help to deliver the government’s Levelling Up mission for education - for 90% of children leaving primary school to achieve the expected standard in reading, writing and maths by 2030, providing them with the foundation they need to secure well-paid jobs in the future.

To support this, last month the government announced its new pledge to parents: if your child falls behind in English or maths, they will get the support they need from their school to help them get back on track.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:

“I want every parent across the country to know that their child’s education is at the very heart of this government’s agenda.

“We are determined to raise standards in our schools so every child has access to the same opportunities wherever they live, and our brilliant teachers are supported to do what they do best, which is why we’re putting our education ambition into law this week.

“By giving every child a good education, we’re giving them the opportunity to thrive so they can reach their full potential and secure the jobs needed - this is absolutely vital to our levelling up mission.”

Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi said:

“Our new Schools Bill, alongside the Schools White Paper, will create a school system that works for every child, parent and family, bringing every school up to our current best standards.

“We want every school to be part of an academy trust, enabling teachers to focus on what they do best - meeting the needs of every child. Schools’ approach to attendance is being overhauled to make sure every child gets the benefit of every possible hour in the classroom.

“In combination, this work will make sure every child has access to an education that they deserve and helps them fulfil their potential.”

The measures in the Bill will:

  • Support more schools to become part of a strong, multi-academy trust.
  • Strengthen the regulatory framework for academy trusts, underpinned by powers to intervene where they are failing.
  • Introduce a direct National Funding Formula, so that every school is allocated funding on a fair and consistent basis, wherever it is in the country.
  • Require schools to publish an attendance policy
  • Establish compulsory registers for children not in school, so that the system can identify those who are not receiving a suitable full-time education.
  • Place a duty on local authorities to provide support to home-schooling families, so that no child falls through the cracks.
  • Give Ofsted more powers to crack down on ‘unregistered schools’ operating illegally.
  • Give the Teaching Regulation Agency increased powers to investigate misconduct.

This is all backed by huge government investment – core school funding will rise by £4 billion in 2022/23 compared with 2021/22, which represents a 7% increase per pupil. On top of this, £5 billion has been invested in the National Tutoring Programme, offering high-quality catch-up tutoring for students who fell behind during the pandemic.

Earlier this year, the government also set out its vision for a post-18 education system that promotes social mobility by providing more options for people to study, train, retrain or upskill at any stage throughout their lives.

In support of this, the Higher Education Bill is also expected to be announced this week, enabling the introduction of the Lifelong Loan Entitlement. This will provide people with a loan equivalent to four years of education (£37,000 in today’s fees) that they can use over their lifetime for a range of studies including shorter and technical courses. This could help them secure a promotion, or a better job.

This is a seismic shift in the way post-18 education is funded and accessed – and combined with the government’s school reforms – will make sure an excellent education is accessible to everyone in this country, no matter what stage of life they’re at.

Boris Johnson will step down as prime minister.

LONDON — Boris Johnson said on Thursday that he would step down as Britain’s prime minister, after a wholesale rebellion of his cabinet, a wave of government resignations and a devastating loss of party support prompted by his handling of the the latest scandal that has engulfed his leadership.

Mr. Johnson said he would stay on in his post until the Conservative Party chooses a new leader, which could take several months. He said he expected the timetable for his departure and the selection of a successor to be decided on Monday by a committee of senior Conservative lawmakers.

“It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader,” Mr. Johnson said in remarks outside Downing Street . “The process of choosing that new leader should begin now.”

Mr. Johnson’s resignation brings an abrupt end to a tumultuous tenure that was distinguished by the landslide victory three years ago and a successful drive to pull Britain out of the European Union, but that collapsed under the weight of a relentless series of scandals.

Mr. Johnson said he had tried to hold on to his job, because he felt it was his duty and his obligation to continue the work he had done since 2019, when he led the Conservative Party to a landslide election victory on a promise to “Get Brexit Done.”

“I want to tell you how sorry I am to be giving up the best job in the world,” Mr. Johnson said to a crowd that included aides and his wife, Carrie, who held the couple’s daughter, Romy. “But them’s the breaks.”

Mr. Johnson’s decision capped a dizzying 48 hours in British politics that began on Tuesday evening with the unexpected resignation of two of his highest-ranking ministers — the chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, and the health secretary, Sajid Javid. That was followed by a flurry of resignations of other ministers and officials all day Wednesday and on Thursday morning.

The 1922 Committee, the powerful body that represents Conservative Party backbench lawmakers, is likely to use the summer vacation to complete the process of selecting the new Conservative Party leader who will become prime minister. At the very latest, they will want to have installed the person by the time of the annual party conference in the fall.

Among the potential candidates are Mr. Sunak and Mr. Javid; Liz Truss, the foreign secretary; Suella Braverman, the attorney general; and Nadhim Zahawi, who briefly replaced Mr. Sunak as chancellor. There are also two outsiders: Jeremy Hunt, a former foreign secretary who challenged Mr. Johnson for the party leadership in 2019; and Tom Tugendhat, the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Whether Mr. Johnson will be able to stay in power until the fall was not clear, given the intense backlash against him in the party. The opposition welcomed his departure but said it was long overdue.

Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, said it was “good news for the country that Boris Johnson has resigned,” but added: “It should have happened long ago.”

Mr. Johnson’s latest troubles erupted last week after a Conservative lawmaker, Chris Pincher, became drunk at an exclusive London club, where, it was alleged, he groped two men. Mr. Johnson had appointed Mr. Pincher to a senior party position in February despite earlier complaints of inappropriate behavior against Mr. Pincher.

Mr. Johnson at first denied being aware of the previous complaints, but it later emerged that he had known about them, and he eventually acknowledged that it was a mistake to have named Mr. Pincher to the elevated position.

news analysis

Boris Johnson’s messy exit encapsulates a tumultuous tenure as prime minister.

LONDON — The end, when it finally came, was just as messy and jaw-dropping as every other chapter of Boris Johnson’s political career.

Holed up in Downing Street on Wednesday night, the prime minister faced a rebellion of his cabinet, a catastrophic loss of support in his Conservative Party and a wholesale exodus of ministers, which threatened to leave significant parts of the British government without functioning leadership.

Yet far from surrendering, Mr. Johnson’s aides put out word that he would continue to fight. It looked like a last roll of the dice by one of the great gamblers in British politics. His brazen refusal to acknowledge reality invited comparisons to Donald J. Trump’s defiance in the chaotic days after the 2020 presidential election.

By Thursday morning, however, political gravity finally reasserted itself. For one of the few times in his career, Mr. Johnson was unable to bend the narrative to his advantage through the sheer force of his personality; at midday, in front of his Downing Street headquarters, he announced he was relinquishing the leadership of a party that no longer supported him and giving up a job he had pursued for much of his adult life.

“I want to tell you how sorry I am to be giving up the best job in the world,” Mr. Johnson said, “but them’s the breaks.”

As the political post-mortems on Mr. Johnson are written, the tumultuous events of the last week may come to encapsulate his career — one defined by a gleeful disregard for the rules, a shrewd instinct for public opinion, an elastic approach to ethics and a Falstaffian appetite for the cut-and-thrust of politics.

“Most prime ministers would have gotten the message sooner,” said Andrew Gimson, one of Mr. Johnson’s biographers. “The element of exaggeration, of turning up the volume, is very characteristic of his style.”

In the end, however, Mr. Johnson’s risk-taking appetite was not enough to compensate for his panoply of shortcomings. He engaged in behavior that critics said revealed a sense of entitlement and a belief that the rules did not apply to him. Critics accused him of being disorganized, ideologically and administratively.

After leading Britain out of the European Union in 2020, the prime minister did not have much of a plan for what to do next. He quickly became hostage to events, lurching from crisis to crisis as the coronavirus pandemic engulfed Britain, and presiding over a scandal-soaked administration.

Mr. Johnson had long thrived by thumbing his nose at political convention. His messy crop of blond hair seemed a metaphor for a messy personal and professional life, which some British voters savored and others merely tolerated.

But Mr. Johnson’s lack of truthfulness finally caught up with him. His constantly shifting accounts of his conduct — whether in attending illicit parties at Downing Street during lockdowns, attempting to use a Tory Party donor to finance the costly refurbishment of his apartment, or promoting a Conservative lawmaker with a history of sexual misconduct allegations against him — finally exhausted the support of his party and many voters.

  • An Unusual Case: After months of studying a man in Germany who received 217 doses of different Covid vaccine types, doctors reported that the subject had a robust immunity response and no side effects .

Analysis: After years of dissembling defiance, Johnson could not dodge his party.

After a lifetime of swaggering and dissembling through one scandal after another on the strength of his prodigious political skills — a mix of charm, guile, ruthlessness, hubris, amorality, oratorical dexterity and rumpled Wodehousian bluster — Boris Johnson has finally reached the end. It seems that the laws of gravity apply to him after all.

It’s not that he ever fooled anyone about who he really was. Over the years, he has routinely been described as mendacious, irresponsible, reckless and lacking any coherent moral center other than wanting to seize and hold on to power.

“People have known that Boris Johnson lies for 30 years,” the writer and academic Rory Stewart, a former Conservative member of Parliament, said recently . “He’s probably the best liar we’ve ever had as a prime minister. He knows a hundred different ways to lie.”

In contrast to former President Donald J. Trump, another politician with an improvisational and often distant relationship to the truth, Mr. Johnson’s approach has rarely been to double down on his lies or to delude himself for consistency’s sake into acting as if they were true. Rather, he recasts them to fit new information that comes to light, as if the truth were a fungible concept, no more solid than quicksand.

“Each act in his political career has seen an ideological emptiness filled with self-promotion,” Simon Jenkins, a columnist for The Guardian, wrote on Thursday . “The abuse of power has been total, from favors for lovers to contracts for friends. He has abused everything from the honors system to international law.”

Mislead, omit, obfuscate, bluster, deny, deflect, attack, apologize while implying that he has done nothing wrong — the British prime minister’s blueprint for dealing with a crisis, his critics say, almost never begins, and rarely ends, with simply telling the truth. That approach worked for him for years — until finally it didn’t.

When Mr. Johnson was poised to become prime minister, his old editor at The Telegraph, Max Hastings, wrote a long article about him .

“I have a hunch that Johnson will come to regret securing the prize for which he has struggled so long,” Mr. Hastings concluded, “because the experience of the premiership will lay bare his absolute unfitness for it.”

A wave of resignations finally pushed Johnson to resign.

LONDON — Late Wednesday night, Prime Minister Boris Johnson of Britain was defiant, refusing to quit, rejecting entreaties from cabinet colleagues who told him the game was up and even sacking one of them, Michael Gove, a friend and rival since their days together at Oxford University.

Despite everything stacked against him, Mr. Johnson did not go quietly. So the blows kept coming.

Simon Hart, the Welsh secretary, was next to quit, and, speaking on TV, the attorney general, Suella Braverman, not only called for Mr. Johnson to go but also declared herself a candidate to succeed him.

By the end of Wednesday, dozens of ministers or senior aides had resigned in an exodus that threatened to cripple decision making in several government departments.

By breakfast time, the line from Downing Street that Mr. Johnson was at his desk, working on how to reshuffle his top team, was no longer credible. There were too many jobs vacant and too few loyalists to fill them.

Early Thursday, another cabinet minister, Brandon Lewis, the Northern Ireland secretary, quit, saying that things were “now past the point of no return” and adding, “I cannot sacrifice my personal integrity to defend things as they stand now.”

Six lower-ranking ministers followed suit, including the security minister, Damian Hinds, and a Treasury minister, Helen Whately.

But it seems Mr. Johnson finally got the message when even those he had recently promoted turned on him. Less than 48 hours after becoming chancellor of the Exchequer, Nadhim Zahawi demanded that the prime minister who had given him the job stand aside.

Then the cabinet’s newest member, Michelle Donelan, who had been appointed to replace Mr. Zahawi in his previous role as education secretary, resigned from her new position.

Not long after, word came from Downing Street that Mr. Johnson had acknowledged what had been evident for some time — that his time in that building was coming to an end, and that he would speak to the nation later on Thursday.

Some of the scandals that have battered Johnson politically.

Boris Johnson’s decision to promote a little-known member of Parliament with a history of misconduct complaints against him was the final straw that led his Conservative Party colleagues to abandon him in droves, forcing him to agree to step down.

But it was hardly the first controversy to damage Mr. Johnson politically. Indeed, Mr. Johnson, who has delighted in thumbing his nose at convention and given shifting accounts and explanations when accused of wrongdoing, had survived a series of scandals that might have sunk other politicians.

Here are some of the major controversies that have dogged Mr. Johnson’s tumultuous, three-year tenure at No. 10 Downing Street:

A donor paid to remodel his home.

In the spring of 2021, news reports raised questions about Mr. Johnson’s costly refurbishment of his apartment at No. 10 Downing Street , which was initially partly financed by a Conservative Party donor who supplemented the public funding for the renovations.

It was widely reported in the British press that the remodeling was done partly to satisfy the tastes of Mr. Johnson’s then-fiancée , Carrie Symonds, who reportedly favored designer furniture and gold wall paper.

The accusations prompted an investigation by Britain’s Electoral Commission, whose report referred to WhatsApp messages between Mr. Johnson and the donor that an adviser on standards had not seen. The Conservative Party was eventually fined 17,800 pounds, or about $21,000, for failing to correctly report a donation.

Last year, Mr. Johnson faced a barrage of criticism over boozy gatherings held at his residence and government offices during coronavirus lockdowns in 2020 and 2021. The events violated the strict rules his government had imposed on the rest of the country, and tabloids soon nicknamed the scandal “partygate.”

Mr. Johnson said he thought one gathering was a work event, but more evidence emerged that government employees were attending multiple social gatherings, including one that appeared to be a birthday celebration for him.

After an investigation into a dozen of the parties, the police fined Mr. Johnson this spring for having broken lockdown rules at Downing Street, with members of his staff found to have held the parties in violation of the pandemic regulations.

Outrage over the double standard of the parties led to a no-confidence vote in June in Parliament. Mr. Johnson survived the vote, but it left him reeling politically.

The Owen Patterson Affair

Last year, Parliament’s standards committee recommended suspending a Conservative lawmaker and former minister, Owen Paterson, for 30 days after finding he had broken rules on political lobbying.

Mr. Johnson intervened in November to stop the suspension, and his party also pushed through contentious plans to change the system that investigated Mr. Paterson.

But after damaging headlines, the effort collapsed in a day. Mr. Paterson resigned during a backlash from politicians, news organizations and even the former head of the intelligence services. The government abandoned the proposed changes.

Mr. Johnson later acknowledged during questioning in Parliament that Mr. Paterson “had fallen foul of the rules on paid advocacy,” and the Conservatives lost the election to fill Mr. Paterson’s seat.

The Pincher Affair

Mr. Johnson’s allies in the Conservative Party finally united against him last week when a little-known member of Parliament named Chris Pincher was accused of groping two men at an exclusive club during a night of drinking.

Mr. Pincher, 52, a fierce Johnson loyalist known for his skill in rounding up support for legislation, had helped stave off the no-confidence vote in May. Mr. Johnson had brought him into the government in 2019, making him a junior minister in the foreign office, and then had given him a position as deputy chief whip in February.

It was not the first time, however, that Mr. Pincher had been accused of sexual misconduct. He had been forced to quit a position in the whip’s office in 2017 after he was accused of making an unwanted pass at a conservative activist. Another complaint was lodged in 2019 when he was in the foreign office.

Through his aides, Mr. Johnson insisted for days he did not know about the previous allegations when he had appointed Mr. Pincher to the foreign officers. Ministers sent to defend the prime minister on radio and television said the same.

Then, evidence emerged that Mr. Johnson had known about the previous allegations, when the former top civil servant in the Foreign Office, Simon McDonald, released a public letter on Tuesday accusing Downing Street of distorting the facts.

It was the beginning of the end for Mr. Johnson.

How a lawmaker’s night on the town helped bring down Boris Johnson.

When a little-known member of Britain’s Parliament got drunk at an exclusive club last week and then staggered out into a warm London night, few would have thought that he was about to cause, albeit inadvertently, the unraveling of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s hold on office.

Alcohol and late nights are hardly strangers in British politics, so the actions of the lawmaker, Chris Pincher, might easily have gone unnoticed.

But a week later, what started small led to a flood of cabinet resignations that brought the Conservative government to the point of collapse. On Thursday, Mr. Johnson himself said he would step down.

Competence, integrity and trust lie at the root of the scandal over Mr. Pincher’s alleged actions. The issues are at the core of disputes that have riddled Mr. Johnson’s tenure , including one in which the police fined him in April for breaking pandemic lockdown rules. This time, however, Mr. Johnson’s Conservative Party colleagues have abandoned him.

Mr. Pincher, 52, the member of Parliament for Tamworth in the Midlands, had almost no national profile. But within British politics, he had cultivated a reputation as a fierce loyalist to Mr. Johnson and an expert in the art of cajoling other Conservative lawmakers to vote through government business. For those attributes, Mr. Johnson made him a junior minister in 2019 and then, this February, a deputy chief whip charged with marshaling government business.

In this latter task, his colleagues said, he was unusually efficient, helping organize a below-the-radar operation — dubbed, at least by some, “Operation Save Big Dog” — that enabled Mr. Johnson to narrowly survive a vote of confidence last month by his colleagues in Parliament.

Yet there was a problem. Mr. Pincher had been in the whip’s office before, but in 2017, he was forced to quit after accusations that he had made an unwanted pass at a Conservative activist, a former professional rower named Alex Story. A complaint of inappropriate behavior was also made against Mr. Pincher in 2019 when he worked in the Foreign Office.

It is Mr. Johnson’s decision to bring him back into government that is at the root of the present crisis.

Last Wednesday, Mr. Pincher attended an event for the Conservative Friends of Cyprus at the Carlton Club in one of London’s most exclusive neighborhoods, not far from Buckingham Palace. He has been accused of groping two men while he was there. Witnesses said he was so drunk that he had to be put into a taxi.

The next day, contrite, he wrote a letter on House of Commons notepaper to Mr. Johnson, offering his resignation as deputy chief whip. “Last night I drank far too much,” he said. “I’ve embarrassed myself and other people which is the last thing I want to do and for that I apologize to you and to those concerned.”

That was not the end. The government insisted for days that Mr. Johnson had not known of any previous accusations, but then it emerged that he had known of the 2019 complaint, yet still appointed Mr. Pincher deputy chief whip. The former top civil servant in the Foreign Office, Simon McDonald, released a public letter on Tuesday accusing Downing Street of distorting the facts.

Opposition lawmakers demanded that Mr. Pincher resign from Parliament. Government ministers, sent to defend Mr. Johnson’s handling of the matter in radio and television interviews, appeared uncomfortable. Aides to Mr. Johnson said he had forgotten about the previous allegations when he appointed Mr. Pincher — a charge that brought howls of derision.

Through it all, Mr. Pincher has remained silent, avoiding the spotlight and denying substantive accusations against him.

LONDON — As the news of Boris Johnson’s intention to resign as Conservative Party leader started to spread in central London on Thursday, many residents expressed a sense of relief.

“The sooner he resigns, the better,” said Francis Jackson, 63, a retired police officer from Manchester, England. “He is bringing the government and the United Kingdom into disrepute.”

Christopher Meade, 71, agreed. “About time!” he said. “He is a very bad prime minister and a very bad man. It’s been a disaster for this country.”

London voted overwhelmingly against Mr. Johnson’s party in the 2019 election.

But Mr. Jackson, who described himself as a socialist, said he had supported Mr. Johnson in the last general election in 2019, in what he called a “protest vote” against the Labour Party. Mr. Jackson said he had hoped the prime minister would get Brexit done and bring self-determination back to Britain.

When rumors about breaches of coronavirus restrictions at Downing Street started circulating, however, Mr. Jackson changed his mind about the prime minister.

“He was abundantly declared a pathological liar, and I don’t like that,” he said. “I believe you must lead by example, and the guy has no shame and no integrity whatsoever.”

For his part, Mr. Meader, a retired civil servant, said that he had worked under several prime ministers and that Mr. Johnson was “by far the worst.” He was surprised that Mr. Johnson had agreed to step down now, after holding on to his job through a series of other scandals.

“He is like a child who does not want to let go of his favorite toy,” he said. “It’s been disgraceful.”

David Levi, a data scientist in London, said he also thought Mr. Johnson would hold onto longer. “When you put a man with no shame in charge, you expect him to stay on as long as he wants,” Mr. Levi said.

Polly Hatfield, 30, an editor in London, said she was relieved. She called Mr. Johnson’s behavior “disturbing” and “embarrassing” and said it undermined the British government. “He has no dignity and no respect.”

The relief over Mr. Johnson’s pending exit was not confined to London. In Wakefield, a city in northern England where the Labour Party recently recaptured a parliamentary seat that Conservatives had won as part of Mr. Johnson’s 2019 landslide victory, some voters also welcomed the news.

They pointed to what they saw as the government’s mishandling of the pandemic, including a sense that officials had imposed one set of rules on the public while following another for themselves.

“I’m glad to see the back of him,” said Anthony Sargeant, 44, who voted for Labour in the parliamentary election last month. “He was becoming a laughingstock.”

Marie Holroyd, 55, who also voted for Labour in the recent election, said of Mr. Johnson: “Everybody knows now that he’s only interested in himself and his own position. I just don’t think he’s got what it takes to be a leader.”

‘He is our Boris’: Supporters mourn Johnson’s decision to resign.

LONDON — While some Britons breathed a sigh of relief when Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he had agreed to step down, for others, Thursday was a grim day.

“The b@stards in my own party got their way,” Fran Carpenter, a Conservative county councilor in Hampshire, southwest of London, wrote in a WhatsApp message. “We have lost one of the best leaders of our time.”

Mr. Johnson, she said, had done what the people wanted him to do, such as delivering Brexit as well as a tougher immigration policy, and she said she now worried about the future of democracy.

Some Conservative members of Parliament, she said, could not “cope with personality” and were jealous of him. “And he was (is) just brilliant and funny,” she wrote.

She added that Mr. Johnson was “NOT” like former President Donald J. Trump because he was much more intelligent.

“He is our Boris,” she wrote. “Poor Boris. He really doesn’t deserve this.”

“And we love his hair!” she added.

On Twitter, supporters used the hashtag #BackBoris to express their discontent with the prime minister’s resignation, arguing that the Conservative Party was giving up its golden goose.

Removing Mr. Johnson, they said, would leave Britain a second-rate country with a “boring grey suited” prime minister. Some announced that they would give up their Conservative Party membership cards. And some even said they would take a break from Twitter.

“It’s a coup,” said Adam Conlon, 38, a security guard from Manchester, in northern England. “Boris Johnson has been the best and the most charismatic prime minister of my lifetime, and now I have him taken away.”

Like many other members of the Conservative Party who are staunch Brexit supporters, Mr. Conlon was deeply grateful to the prime minister for getting Britain out of the European Union.

“He did not just get Brexit done,” he said. “He introduced legislation to make Brexit work .”

Mr. Conlon said the prime minister’s predicament was a result of “hysteria” fueled by parts of the news media. “Those who oppose Brexit want somebody in that will bring back closer ties to the E.U.,” he said, “which the majority in this country don’t want.”

What happens next?

The resignation of Prime Minister Boris Johnson as leader of Britain’s Conservative Party does not prompt a general election. Instead, it kicks off a process to select a new party leader, who will then move into 10 Downing Street.

Under the British parliamentary system, the political party with the most lawmakers gets the chance to form a government. So if that party changes its leader, the country changes its prime minister without the voters having a say.

That is how Mr. Johnson initially came to power in 2019, when he replaced Theresa May as prime minister, though he then led the Conservatives to a landslide victory in the general election that December. Mrs. May also took over without a general election, when David Cameron resigned in 2016 after losing the Brexit referendum.

Because the process for choosing a party leader is not swift, the departing prime minister normally stays on the job until his or her successor is chosen. That is what Downing Street officials say will happen this time.

Though that is likely to keep Mr. Johnson as caretaker until September, the timetable is uncertain and is not in Downing Street’s hands.

Instead, it will be determined by a powerful body known as the 1922 Committee — named for a meeting a century ago that deposed a previous Conservative leader — which represents the Conservative Party’s backbench lawmakers and is the guardian of their rule book.

The committee will soon outline the timetable for elections to be the new Conservative Party leader, which will be a two-stage process.

First, Conservative lawmakers will choose their two top candidates for the post. That will be done by a series of ballots, and most analysts expect this part of the contest to be completed before Parliament takes its summer vacation, scheduled for July 21.

That shortlist will then go to the wider membership of the Conservative Party — about 200,000 people who pay a standard annual subscription of 25 pounds, about $30 — which will make the final choice.

In 2019, when Mr. Johnson defeated the former cabinet minister Jeremy Hunt, there was a campaign lasting several weeks during which the two contenders held events around the country.

In this case, it is likely that the contest will be completed in early September, at which point the result of the vote among Conservative Party members will be announced and the new leader will move into Downing Street.

That would give the new prime minister time to prepare for a set-piece launch of their premiership at the Conservative Party’s annual conference, which is scheduled to take place in Birmingham early in October.

Boris Johnson leaves behind a fraught economy and an uneasy Brexit legacy.

Boris Johnson has been pushed into giving up leadership of the country during a perilous economic moment, leaving behind a grim outlook and an uncertain Brexit legacy.

On Thursday afternoon, Mr. Johnson described his resistance to stepping down “when the economic scene is so difficult.”

It has become a period that is frequently compared to the 1970s in Britain, an era of stagflation when the economy shrank and inflation soared and vital services were halted by widespread strikes. Britain isn’t repeating this stagflationary era yet, but the threat is there .

Inflation in the country has reached an annual rate of 9.1 percent, the highest in four decades , driven by supply chain disruptions from pandemic lockdowns and the war in Ukraine. And price pressures keep building as companies begin to pass on the increase in costs to their customers and workers demand higher wages to cope with the rising cost of living.

Households are facing the worst squeeze on their living standards in generations because wage growth is not keeping up with inflation, which isn’t expected to peak until at least the fall when the price cap on household energy bills is reset higher. Disposable household income, once adjusted for inflation, is expected to fall by more than 2 percent this year.

That’s the worst since 1945, according to Oxford Economics.

“It is a really tough time for a lot of people,” said Andrew Goodwin, the chief U.K. economist at Oxford Economics. For lower-income households, “it’s going to be worse because the sorts of things that you spend more on — food, petrol, energy — are the things that are going up in price the most rapidly. So their inflation rates are going to be even higher.”

As pay falls far behind inflation, workers have called strikes that set Britain up for a summer of labor unrest. Recently, train workers and criminal defense lawyers walked off the job, and health care workers, schoolteachers and postal employees are among those threatening to strike in the coming months.

The unrest and anger reflect the pain many households feel. Mr. Johnson and his former chancellor, Rishi Sunak, who resigned on Tuesday, tried to ease some of this burden in May when they announced another round of cost-of-living payments and bill reductions. But hardship was already widespread for lower-income households, who couldn’t build up savings during the pandemic. Food bank usage had risen during the pandemic, even before the latest surge in inflation.

Mr. Johnson’s departure leaves considerable uncertainty about the government’s next moves to address economic hardship. It could cause a delay in the introduction of the next budget, where spending and tax decisions are determined. For investors and economic analysts, the crucial question is what is the future of fiscal policy and if a new chancellor, Britain top finance minister, will reverse the last chancellor’s increase in taxes for many workers.

Even though many of the economic shocks hitting Britain now, such as the jump in energy prices, are shared with other countries, Britain’s outlook is particularly challenging.

“These shocks are revealing deep-seated problems that have been around for a while and making the economy much more precarious than it would otherwise be,” said Jagjit S. Chadha, director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research.

The research institute expects little economic growth in Britain this year and next year, compounding a long-running problem of unequal wealth and income distribution. At the same time, Mr. Chadha said, Brexit has been a “slow puncture” to the British economy, dragging down growth as trade barriers have been erected, European Union citizens have left the labor market and policy uncertainty has discouraged business investment.

“This is not a very attractive picture that I’m painting,” said Mr. Chadha. “But this is the inheritance of whoever is the next prime minister and the cabinet that comes along.”

Andrew Bailey, the governor of the Bank of England said last month that the British economy was “probably weakening rather earlier and somewhat more than others.”

To combat inflation, the central bank has been raising interest rates since December, bringing them to their highest level since 2009. Further increases have become more uncertain as policymakers try to strike a balance between curbing inflation and risking a recession. Oxford Economics is predicting that the British economy will be stagnant for the next year.

Mr. Johnson’s economic agenda was a pitch to “level up” the country in a grand plan to reduce regional inequality. But to many analysts, the plan has fallen flat for its lack of specificity. His oft-stated drive to build a “high-wage, high-skill, high-productivity economy” was delivered in words but not policy action, they said.

“Certainly there are some good slogans, but not a huge amount of achievement behind it,” said Mr. Goodwin. “A lot of these sort of policies, they were ideas, nothing then followed on. There was no delivery mechanism.”

One of Mr. Johnson’s proudest achievements was “getting Brexit done.” But as that process continues to be mired in conflict in Ireland , Mr. Johnson’s Brexit legacy is uncertain, as the economic benefits of leaving the European Union are slow to materialize.

For many industries, including farm work, construction and hospitality, the legacy of Brexit is a smaller work force that is causing businesses to slow down. For small businesses exporting to the European Union, Brexit has brought extra costs and red tape , with no discernible benefits. Trade barriers have also worsened food inflation, according to economists.

“We have a world in which technically we’ve left the European Union, but we haven’t replaced it with the kind of trade agreements that might have fostered better growth than would otherwise be the case,” said Mr. Chadha. “We haven’t really ‘Brexited’ in the way that people said we would’ve done.”

Here are the contenders to become the next prime minister.

With Boris Johnson poised to step down as the leader of the Conservative Party, the spotlight is on who might succeed him as prime minister.

There will most likely be a number of candidates for the top job, including many who reflect the changing face of the Conservative Party — one that is more representative of the population of the country. But here are some of the people considered favorites to take over the party leadership.

Jeremy Hunt

Jeremy Hunt, 55, the former foreign secretary whom Mr. Johnson defeated in the last party leadership contest , was at one point the bookmakers’ favorite for the top job. After losing the 2019 leadership contest, he moved to Parliament’s backbenches, criticizing the government’s approach to the Covid pandemic as chairman of the Health and Social Care Select Committee. His past as a supporter of remaining in the European Union may hurt him with Conservative members, though he says he now supports Brexit.

Rishi Sunak

Rishi Sunak, 42, the former chancellor of the Exchequer whose resignation on Tuesday dealt a heavy blow to Mr. Johnson, has long been seen as a potential party leader, gaining popularity through his role in delivering aid packages for businesses and individuals during the pandemic. But he was injured politically this year by controversies over the tax status of his wealthy wife and news that he himself had continued to hold a U.S. green card, allowing him to live and work in the United States, for months after he became Britain’s top finance official.

Liz Truss, 46, who was appointed by Mr. Johnson as foreign secretary last year, is seen as a rising political star. Her championing of sanctions against Russian oligarchs at the start of the war in Ukraine was cheered by the public. But she also expressed strong support for Mr. Johnson after the departure of two of his cabinet ministers on Tuesday, so it remains to be seen whether that loyalty might wound her.

Nadhim Zahawi

Nadhim Zahawi, another Conservative rising star, was in the thick of the maneuvering around Mr. Johnson’s departure. Mr. Johnson appointed him chancellor of the Exchequer hours after Mr. Sunak’s resignation, but on Thursday morning, Mr. Zahawi revealed that he had tried to convince the prime minister to step down and publicly urged him to “go now.”

Mr. Zahawi, 55, was previously the education secretary and served as the vaccines minister during the height of the pandemic. He was born in Iraq in 1967 and emigrated to Britain with his family in the 1970s when Saddam Hussein came to power.

Sajid Javid

Sajid Javid, 52, the former health secretary whose departure on Tuesday alongside Mr. Sunak helped set off an avalanche of government resignations, has held a number of cabinet positions under both Mr. Johnson and his predecessors Theresa May and David Cameron.

Mr. Javid is a son of Pakistani immigrants who arrived in Britain in the 1960s. He became the first ethnic minority to hold the post of home secretary when he was appointed to that role in 2018, and unlike many of his fellow Conservative lawmakers, he comes from a modest background: His father was a bus driver.

Other potential contenders

A survey of Conservative Party members by the polling company YouGov on Thursday suggested that their favored candidates would be Ben Wallace, Britain’s current defense secretary, and Penny Mordaunt, a former defense secretary and prominent supporter of Brexit who is now the minister for trade policy.

Party members, however, choose only between a final pair of candidates selected in a series of ballots by the party’s lawmakers, and it was unclear whether Mr. Wallace and Ms. Mordaunt would emerge in that final two, if indeed they chose to run.

Britain’s attorney general, Suella Braverman, said on Wednesday that she would also “put my name into the ring” were Mr. Johnson to resign; she had previously called on him to do so, though without resigning herself. Ms. Braverman, who as a lawyer defended the Home Office in immigration cases, was appointed attorney general in February 2020, having become a lawmaker five years earlier.

The candidates to replace Johnson reflect a more diverse Conservative Party.

For years, Britain’s Conservative Party was seen mainly as the realm of white men from elite backgrounds. But the contenders to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister reflect the growing diversity at the top of the party’s ranks.

Among those expected to vie for the leadership position are a son of Indian immigrants, an Iraqi refugee, a number of women and a son of a Pakistani bus driver.

This is not an accident. It is largely a result of efforts by the party in recent years to put forward more diverse candidates for Parliament, helping build a broader bench of leaders. Mr. Johnson’s government was already indicative of the shift; Mr. Johnson, himself a white man from an elite background, appointed a cabinet that has included a number of women and has been Britain’s most ethnically diverse,

The changes are part of a wider push for representation in public office and in workplaces across Britain, some of which came on the heels of the Equality Act of 2010. But political parties are responsible for ensuring better representation among their own candidates, and though critics say the Tories still have a long way to go, the party has made efforts in recent years to bring in more diverse candidates.

One of the biggest steps was when David Cameron, then the Conservative Party’s leader, introduced the A-list, a system that he promoted as a way to include more women and people from Black, Asian and other minority backgrounds in the government.

In the 2005 election, Mr. Cameron promised to transform the identity of the Conservative Party by bringing in candidates from outside the traditional party pipeline. His initiative whittled down the list of Conservative candidates for Parliament to include an equal number of men and women and a significant proportion of people from minority backgrounds, and required that local party branches put one of these preferred candidates forward for winnable seats.

Last year, the party again overhauled its candidate selection process in an effort to increase diversity further.

Critics say the Conservatives have not done enough to reflect the society they represent and to root out racism, pointing to issues including Mr. Johnson’s own history of racist remarks and allegations of widespread misogyny within the party and Parliament at large. Some also note that many of the new leaders of the party, although ethnically diverse, still represent the wealthiest strata of society.

In the last general election in 2019, 31 percent of the Conservative Party members elected were women, and 12 percent came from Black or other minority backgrounds. In total, some 65 people in the House of Commons are from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Of those, 41 are Labour Party members and 22 are Conservatives.

The 22 include some of the most powerful Conservatives, among them six cabinet ministers under Mr. Johnson: Rishi Sunak, the recently departed chancellor of the Exchequer; Priti Patel, the home secretary; Alok Sharma, the president for COP26 ; Kwasi Kwarteng, the secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy; Sajid Javid, the recently departed health secretary; and Nadhim Zahawi, the current chancellor of the Exchequer.

Suella Braverman, the attorney general, who advises the cabinet, is also from an ethnic minority background and has said she is interested in succeeding Mr. Johnson.

Read Boris Johnson’s resignation speech.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson of Britain announced on Thursday that he would step down. This is a transcript of his speech, lightly edited for spelling, as reported by Reuters .

“It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader of that party and therefore a new prime minister, and I’ve agreed with Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of our backbench M.P.s, that the process of choosing that new leader should begin now and the timetable will be announced next week. And I’ve today appointed a cabinet to serve, as I will, until the new leader is in place.

“So I want to say to the millions of people who voted for us in 2019, many of them voting Conservative for the first time: ‘Thank you for that incredible mandate, the biggest Conservative majority since 1987, the biggest share of the vote since 1979.’

“And the reason I have fought so hard in the last few days to continue to deliver that mandate in person was not just because I wanted to do so, but because I felt it was my job, my duty, my obligation to you to continue to do what we promised in 2019.

“And of course, I’m immensely proud of the achievements of this government: from getting Brexit done to settling our relations with the continent for over half a century, reclaiming the power for this country to make its own laws in Parliament, getting us all through the pandemic, delivering the fastest vaccine rollout in Europe, the fastest exit from lockdown, and in the last few months, leading the West in standing up to Putin’s aggression in Ukraine.

“And let me say now, to the people of Ukraine, that I know that we in the U.K. will continue to back your fight for freedom for as long as it takes.

“And at the same time, in this country, we’ve been pushing forward a vast program of investment in infrastructure and skills and technology, the biggest in a century. Because if I have one insight into human beings, it is that genius and talent and enthusiasm and imagination are evenly distributed throughout the population but opportunity is not. And that’s why we must keep leveling up, keep unleashing the potential in every part of the United Kingdom. And if we could do that, in this country, we will be the most prosperous in Europe.

“And in the last few days, I’ve tried to persuade my colleagues that it would be eccentric to change governments when we’re delivering so much and when we have such a vast mandate and when we’re actually only a handful of points behind in the polls, even in midterm after quite a few months of pretty relentless sledging and when the economic scene is so difficult domestically and internationally.

“And I regret not to have been successful in those arguments, and of course it’s painful not to be able to see through so many ideas and projects myself. But as we’ve seen at Westminster the herd instinct is powerful and when the herd moves, it moves. And my friends, in politics, no one is remotely indispensable, and our brilliant and Darwinian system will produce another leader, equally committed to taking this country forward through tough times, not just helping families to get through it but changing and improving the way we do things, cutting burdens on businesses and families and yes, cutting taxes, because that is the way to generate the growth and the income we need to pay for great public services.

“And to that new leader, I say, wherever he or she may be, I say I will give you as much support as I can.

“And to you, the British public, I know that there will be many people who are relieved and perhaps quite a few who will also be disappointed. And I want you to know how sad I am to be giving up the best job in the world. But them’s the breaks.

“I want to thank Carrie and our children, all members of my family who have had to put up with so much, for so long. I want to thank the peerless British civil service for all the help and support that you have given our police, our emergency services, and of course, our fantastic N.H.S. who at a critical moment helped to extend my own period in office, as well as our armed services and our agencies that are so admired around the world, and our indefatigable Conservative Party members and supporters whose selfless campaigning makes our democracy possible.

“I want to thank the wonderful staff here at No. 10 and of course Chequers, and our fantastic prop force detectives, the one group, by the way, who never leak.

“Above all I want to thank you, the British public, for the immense privilege that you have given me. And I want you to know that from now on, until the new prime minister is in place, your interests will be served and the government of the country will be carried on.

“Being Prime Minister is an education in itself. I’ve traveled to every part of the United Kingdom and in addition to the beauty of our natural world, I found so many people possessed of such boundless British originality and so willing to tackle old problems in new ways that I know that even if things can sometimes seem dark now, our future together is golden.

“Thank you all very much.”

The British pound rises after the prime minister resigns.

The British pound rose slightly after Boris Johnson said he would resign as Britain’s prime minister on Thursday, in a choppy trade at a time of great political turmoil in London.

The pound, which was already up against the dollar for the day, jumped on the news that Mr. Johnson was preparing to resign. It traded 0.7 percent higher in the afternoon after Mr. Johnson formally announced his departure, at $1.20. The pound was outperforming the euro, which fell about 0.2 percent against the dollar.

The FTSE 100, the benchmark British stock market index, which also began the day with a gain, initially dipped on the news of Mr. Johnson’s resignation but later regained ground, closing more than 1 percent higher. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index was up more, 1.9 percent.

For Britain’s financial markets, Mr. Johnson’s crumbling premiership has been overshadowed by global trends like high inflation, worsening energy security and a deteriorating growth outlook.

Britain’s economic outlook is grim , presenting a major challenge for Mr. Johnson’s successor . Inflation is at a 40-year high and households are facing the worst squeeze on incomes in generations. Businesses are struggling to hire workers since Brexit and the pandemic have diminished the pool of available workers. As pay falls far behind inflation, workers have carried out strikes that set Britain up for a summer of labor unrest .

The U.K.’s top finance official tells Johnson to ‘go now,’ as resignations flood in.

Nadhim Zahawi, whom Prime Minister Boris Johnson of Britain elevated to chancellor of the Exchequer only Tuesday and who on Wednesday defended the government on British morning shows, made an about-face on Thursday, telling the prime minister to “go now.”

Amid a flood of resignations — the count was up to at least 53 by Thursday morning — his statement ramped up the pressure on Mr. Johnson to stand down.

“Prime minister, you know in your heart what the right thing to do is, and go now,” Mr. Zahawi, Britain’s top finance official, wrote in a letter that he posted to his Twitter account .

Mr. Zahawi also revealed that, alongside other colleagues, he had visited Mr. Johnson on Wednesday evening to advise him to “leave with dignity,” and he made it clear that Mr. Johnson had decided not to do that.

“Out of respect, and in the hopes that he would listen to an old friend of 30 years, I kept this counsel private,” he wrote. “I am heartbroken that he hasn’t listened and that he is now undermining incredible achievements of the government at this late hour.”

The latest crisis was spurred by Mr. Johnson’s handling of a case involving Chris Pincher , a Conservative lawmaker who is accused of having groped two men at a private members’ club in London while he was drunk.

That led to the abrupt departures this week of two senior cabinet ministers: the chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, and the health secretary, Sajid Javid. Their resignations appeared to have broken the dam of rebellion against Mr. Johnson by members of his party that has been building for months. It was precipitated by embarrassing reports of parties at Downing Street that violated the government’s own coronavirus lockdown rules.

Among those who resigned on Thursday were Brandon Lewis, the secretary of state for Northern Ireland; Helen Whately , the Exchequer secretary to the Treasury; Damian Hinds , the security minister; and George Freeman , the science minister. Michelle Donelan, who had just taken on the role of education secretary hours earlier after her predecessor was promoted into a newly vacant cabinet position, also stepped down .

Mr. Lewis said on Twitter, “A decent and responsible Government relies on honesty, integrity and mutual respect — it is a matter of profound personal regret that I must leave Government as I no longer believe those values are being upheld.”

Ms. Whately told Mr. Johnson in her letter: “There are only so many times you can apologize and move on. The point has been reached.”

And Mr. Hinds wrote on Twitter, “It shouldn’t take the resignation of dozens of colleagues, but for our country, and trust in our democracy, we must have a change of leadership.”

‘There will be no moving on’ for families of Covid victims, an advocacy group says.

For an advocacy group that seeks justice for those in Britain who have died during the coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s resignation announcement on Thursday was welcome news, but the group said there would be no moving on for the families of the dead.

The group, Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice , aims to hold public institutions accountable for Britain’s high Covid death toll , and has been pressing for Mr. Johnson’s resignation for months, particularly after he was fined for gatherings that breached his own government’s coronavirus restrictions in 2020 and 2021.

On Thursday morning, a spokesperson for the group, Lobby Akinnola, whose father, Femi Akinnola, died of the coronavirus, said that while Mr. Johnson would be able to move on with his life, “there will be no moving on for the families like mine that have been ripped apart by his actions.”

“For us, Johnson will always be the man that wanted to ‘let the bodies pile high’ whilst our loved ones desperately fought for their lives and that partied whilst we had to say goodbye to our loved ones over a screen,” Mr. Akinnola said, referring to comments reportedly made by Mr. Johnson at the start of the pandemic .

He said Mr. Johnson’s legacy would be “the deaths of nearly 200,000 British people on his watch,” making reference to the more than 180,000 confirmed coronavirus deaths in the country since the start of the pandemic. A government inquiry into the handling of the pandemic is underway.

“Although his reign will shortly be coming to an end, his devastating impact on families like ours will not,” Mr. Akinnola added. “We can only hope that the Covid inquiry will bring some closure for us, teaching us the lessons that will save lives in the future and meaning that no one will be able to repeat Johnson’s terrible mistakes and get away with it.”

Even after saying he would resign, Johnson still divides voters in his suburban constituency.

LONDON — They say that in Britain, there is no better stage for politics than the local pub.

At The Three Tuns in Uxbridge, the suburban town on the outskirts of London that is Boris Johnson’s district as a member of Parliament, most drinkers were glued to blaring television screens on Thursday as he announced he would step aside for a new prime minister.

Some met the news with disgruntled tuts. Others grinned, and a few wore expressions of disbelief. Many simply nursed their pints with little care for the political debacle unfolding 17 miles away on Downing Street.

“I’d rather have him in charge than anyone else. They’re all the same,” said Frank Marsh, 79, as he sipped a beer in the pub’s forecourt, ignoring the news broadcast inside.

But voters’ opinions about Mr. Johnson in Uxbridge, a bustling commuter town, were as divided as ever about their perennially divisive representative, even after he caved to pressure from his party over months of political scandals .

“I have lost confidence in him, or certainly his team,” said Jonathan Murrell, 56, a paramedic for the National Health Service who also voted for Mr. Johnson in 2019, but now would not do so again. “It has just become so corrosive now. There needs to be a new face and a reset. I think that is the only way people are going to get behind the government again with any confidence.”

Across from the pub at Frank’s Cafe, tucked away in Uxbridge’s Underground station, staff members were ready for Mr. Johnson to go. With Britain’s economy facing difficult times , they are starting to worry that the cafe, which has stood here since World War I, might not last much longer.

“Look around you, we are completely empty. Our business has been killed because of him,” said one worker, Paul Giorgio, 52 . “It is good he is now gone.”

The seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip has been held by the Conservative Party since its current form was set in 2010, and for the last seven years Mr. Johnson has held on there — not always comfortably. His 2017 majority in the constituency was 5,034 votes, meaning that when he became prime minister two years later, he had the smallest majority of any lawmaker in that role since 1924.

Pushing her trolley out of a shopping center and into the town square, Edith Fletcher, 85, said his departure had become inevitable. “He needed to go. There was no way around it,” she said.

But despite the scandals, investigations and cabinet rebellion, some in Uxbridge remained unequivocal in their support for Mr. Johnson on Thursday, even as they acknowledged his mistakes.

“We are all only human,” said Sally Clargo, 60, who runs a cake stall in the town center’s market. “It is a shame that he has resigned. I really liked Boris.” She added that she would still vote for him as her local lawmaker in the next general election.

Zelensky calls Johnson ‘a true friend’ to Ukraine.

Perhaps no Western leader has made support for Ukraine so central to his personal political brand as Prime Minister Boris Johnson, with two visits to the country since the start of the war, countless phone calls to President Volodymyr Zelensky and the commitment of military and financial aid forging a bond between the two leaders .

So when Mr. Johnson’s political fortunes turned suddenly this week, resulting in his resignation on Thursday morning, his relationship with Mr. Zelensky and Britain’s broader commitment to the country was again in the spotlight.

“What Johnson was doing for Ukraine, he was a true friend of Ukraine,” Mr. Zelensky said in a Thursday interview with CNN shortly after his resignation.

In his daily address to Ukraine on Thursday, Mr. Zelensky added that “Ukrainians feel personal gratitude to Boris,” referring to the leader by his first name, specifically to his “leadership and charisma.”

But Mr. Zelensky said that he was confident that the same commitment would come from Mr. Johnson’s successor. He may be right. One of the few things that British lawmakers can seem to agree on is support for Ukrainian forces in their battle against Russia.

“The U.K. is on the right side of history,” Mr. Zelensky said. “I'm sure the policy toward Ukraine of the U.K. will not be changing.”

The Ukrainian public also has a fondness for Mr. Johnson after the prime minister played an early role in supplying Ukraine with lethal defensive weapons and was a vocal force in pushing Western allies to impose financial sanctions on Russia.

At times, Mr. Johnson’s own political destiny has seemed tied to what is happening in Ukraine. Calls for his resignation earlier this year amid scandal seemed to quiet as attention turned to how to respond to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

As a result, when Mr. Johnson narrowly survived a confidence vote last month, Mr. Zelensky was among the first to applaud the fact that he had managed to stay in office. Just days later, Mr. Johnson made an unannounced visit to Kyiv and announced a training program for Ukrainian forces.

And even as Mr. Johnson delivered his own resignation speech in front of No. 10 Downing Street, peppered with reflections on Britain’s internal political dramas, he made sure to make his feelings about Ukraine known. He spoke with pride about how the British government, in the last few months, had been “leading the West in standing up to Putin’s aggression in Ukraine.”

“And let me say now, to the people of Ukraine, that I know that we in the U.K. will continue to back your fight for freedom for as long as it takes,” he added.

There was certainly one person happy to see Mr. Johnson go: President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia. Mr. Johnson has been one of Mr. Putin’s loudest critics.

Asked by a reporter about the prime minister’s political turmoil on Thursday, Mr. Putin’s spokesman, Dmitri S. Peskov, said: “As for Mr. Johnson, he very much dislikes us — and the feeling is mutual.”

Boris Johnson did not consult watchdog over paid role with hedge fund

Ex-UK PM was required to seek permission for paid role with Merlyn Advisors, for whom he spoke to Venezuela president

Boris Johnson did not seek permission from the post-ministerial jobs watchdog before taking a role as a consultant to a hedge fund, on whose behalf he met the Venezuelan president.

As a former minister, Johnson is required to seek the advice of the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (Acoba) for two years from September 2022, when he left office. The committee’s advice typically comes with restrictions on lobbying and contact with the UK government. It was writing to Johnson on the matter, a source said.

The former prime minister has not sought the committee’s advice for his paid role with Merlyn Advisors, a London-based hedge fund, the Guardian understands.

Details of Johnson’s role as a consultant to the company were first reported by the Sunday Times . A source close to Johnson said the rules had not been broken, and suggested no work had been undertaken that would require an application to Acoba.

Advice from Acoba could have impeded the support Johnson received from British diplomats for his discussions with Nicolás Maduro, the Venezuelan president, in early February. The hedge fund’s co-founder is seeking to improve relations between Venezuela and western countries including the UK, according to the Financial Times .

One possible reason for Johnson’s reluctance to seek Acoba’s advice on this matter is that its letters would make transparent the details of his post-ministerial career.

In the nine months he remained an MP after he left office, Johnson declared more than £5m in earnings, hospitality and donations. Johnson’s spokesperson declined to tell the Sunday Times how much he had been paid by Merlyn Advisors.

In June, Johnson was found in what Acoba’s chair described as a “clear and unambiguous” breach of the requirement set out in the ministerial code to seek the committee’s advice about his role as a columnist at the Daily Mail. Oliver Dowden, who served as party chair under Johnson, decided not to take any further action on the breach of the rules.

After Johnson resigned as foreign secretary in 2018, he was censured by Acoba for failing to seek their advice for his role as a columnist with the Telegraph.

Johnson’s position on his 45-minute talk with Maduro in Caracas, described by one source in the Sunday Times as an “argument”, concerned human rights, Ukraine and democracy. Merlyn Advisors’s co-founder, Maarten Petermann, a former JP Morgan banker, also sat in on the talks, the Sunday Times reported.

Johnson’s spokesperson told the Sunday Times: “Boris Johnson met Venezuelan government officials, with active support from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the knowledge of the foreign secretary, in order to emphasise the need for Venezuela to embrace a proper democratic process.

“He repeatedly made clear there can be no hope of normalisation in relations until Venezuela fully embraces democracy and respects the territorial integrity of its neighbours. He also set out the case for the cause of Ukrainian victory to the government of Venezuela.”

Johnson flew to Caracas by private jet from the Dominican Republic, where he had been on a family holiday. The flight was also paid for by Merlyn Advisors, according to the Sunday Times.

Politics live: chancellor says russia creating 'smokescreen of propaganda' after moscow attack.

Jeremy Hunt says the UK is "on guard" following the terror attack in Moscow. He thinks Russia is seeking to create a "smokescreen" of propaganda in order to ramp up operations in Ukraine - leading the chancellor to say he doesn't trust anything that comes out of the Kremlin.

We'll be back up and running early tomorrow morning for more insight, updates and analysis right here.

There will most likely be a general election at some point in 2024, but we don't know exactly when.

Rishi Sunak has said it will not happen on 2 May - when local elections will take place across England.

The prime minister's "working assumption" is that it will be held in the second half of this year - but beyond that we know very little about the precise timing.

So why is this the case?

Political correspondent Serena Barker-Singh explains:

By Tim Baker , political reporter

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has warned the UK should "absolutely" be concerned about the threat of Islamic State following the terror attack in Moscow.

At least 133 people died in the massacre in the Russian capital on Friday.

Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K), which is a branch of the militant group operating in central Asia, has claimed responsibility.

Asked if the rest of Europe - including the UK - should be "concerned" in the wake of Friday's events, Mr Hunt told Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips: "Absolutely."

He added: "We are very lucky in this country that we have incredibly impressive intelligence agencies who have been successful in stopping, in foiling, a lot of terrorist threats over recent years.

"But we have to remain vigilant - and, you know, if it is Islamic State, they are utterly indiscriminate in what they do, they are prepared to murder in the most horrific way."

Asked if there was a chance of the UK's threat level being raised, Mr Hunt said this was decided by a "special system" in government, and said he was not privy to their discussions.

"I know that they will be looking at this kind of event" Mr Hunt said, "And then they'll be looking at the intelligence that our own intelligence agencies, MI5 and MI6, GCHQ, are picking up.

"And, what I would say is that while we must remain vigilant, they have been extraordinarily successful in foiling a number of plots - a lot of things that never reached the public domain."

Currently, the UK's threat level is "substantial" - the third-highest rating, according to the Security Service, also known as MI5.

The levels are as follows:

• Low - an attack is highly unlikely • Moderate - an attack is possible, but not likely • Substantial - an attack is likely • Severe - an attack is highly likely • Critical - an attack is highly likely in the near future

With Russia claiming there may be Ukrainian involvement in the attacks on Friday, Mr Hunt was asked how much the public should believe them.

He told Sky News: "I think we have very little confidence in anything the Russian government says.

"We know that they are creating a smokescreen of propaganda to defend an utterly evil invasion of Ukraine."

He added that he takes "what the Russian government says with an enormous pinch of salt".

Simon Harris has effectively become Ireland's next prime minister after nominations closed for the leadership of the governing Fine Gael party - with no other candidate publicly declaring their intention to succeed its departing head Leo Varadkar.

Mr Harris, 37, will have no more than a year to save the coalition from defeat at parliamentary elections - with polls for the last three years putting Sinn Fein, which backs unification with Northern Ireland, as the favourite to head the next government.

Our  senior Ireland correspondent  David Blevins   describes his win as all but a formality.

"Simon Harris has been the presumptive new leader for a few days and now it's official," he said in the aftermath of the news.

"The nominations have closed, and we understand no one else has entered the race and that means - by coronation rather than by contest - he will be the next leader."

Sadiq Khan has vowed not to expand the ultra low emission zone (ULEZ) scheme if he wins another term as London mayor in May's election.

In a letter to London's transport commissioner, Mr Khan wrote that he had "categorically" ruled out the introduction of a pay-per-mile scheme, as well as any tightening of ULEZ emissions standards.

"There is clearly still more to do to tackle air pollution, and I'm determined to continue leading from the front in London," he said.

"But my commitment to Londoners is this will not include a new pay-per-mile road user charging scheme or amending the standards for the ULEZ scheme.

"The introduction and expansion of the ULEZ has been necessary and effective. But now it's in place and working, I will ensure the goalposts are not moved for drivers."

Susan Hall, the Conservative mayoral candidate, said: "Promises are worthless from the man who has been dishonest with Londoners about his plans to tax drivers.

"Sadiq Khan said he wouldn't expand ULEZ at the last election, then went ahead and did the opposite."

One year ago, Rishi Sunak made five pledges for voters to judge him on.

The prime minister met his pledge to halve inflation by the end of 2023.

However, he is faring less well with his other pledges.

With the general election approaching, how is Mr Sunak doing on delivering his other promises?

Warning: some explicit language.

Our political correspondent Matthew Thompson has offered some insight into why ministers are turning their eyes eastwards.

Oliver Dowden, the deputy prime minister, is set to address parliament tomorrow on Chinese-British relations and potentially outline how Beijing could be behind cyberattacks in the UK.

"You need only look at the extraordinary report last year from Parliament's intelligence and security committee, which almost pointed fingers at China as being the number one threat [in the world]," Matthew said.

"[A threat from China is] not quite in the news in the way that Russia is, Israel-Gaza is, but that doesn't mean that China is not a threat."

He then outlined what we can expect tomorrow.

"The deputy prime minister, we understand, will give an address to parliament in which he references the threats from China, particularly in relation to cyberattacks directed at MPs," he said.

"Then separately, we understand a number of MPs will be briefed by parliament's director of security, Alison Giles, about cyber attacks from China."

A short time ago we heard from Chancellor Jeremy Hunt.

He was quizzed on Russia, tax cuts and whether £100,000 is a big salary or not.

Watch his full interview with Trevor Phillips here...

A bit more from the chancellor now, who has been discussing the pension triple lock.

The triple lock is a government promise to raise publicly-funded pensions by the level of earnings, inflation or 2.5% -  whichever is highest.

"I can confirm it will be, yes," Hunt said when asked by the BBC if it would be in the Conservatives' election manifesto for the upcoming general election.

"Because of the triple lock that we introduced, [pensioners] are less likely to be in poverty... unlike adults of working age, pensioners can't work, they've retired, and so we need to respect that," he added.

Despite the cost, the chancellor said he felt confident that a continuing Tory government would provide the necessary stability to allow ministers to continue the policy.

"[It is] an expensive commitment, and you can only make that commitment if you're confident that you're going to deliver the economic growth that's going to pay for it," he said.

Boats models

  • Antila 24.4
  • Antila 26CC

Antila 22 has a very modern design line, which resembles its elder sister Antila 24.4.

Its users comfort was the main aim to be achieved during the designing process. There is a comfortable double bunk (berth) in the bow part (zone), and the bunk under the cockpit is not smaller than in Antila 24 yacht. We also provide a functional and original kambuz with a double-burner cooker and a table top combined with a sink. On the opposite side – a sanitary cabin. In the midship area there are two sofa-beds. We wish to emphasize that the height in the mess room is 1,78m. Antila 22 is the only boat, which having the length of 22 feet, offers a full standing position for the crew members inside it. Outside there is a two-meter long cockpit with open stern where 6 to 8 persons can have a comfortable seat. The cockpit guarantees enjoying the evenings also with guests from other boats. The yacht will be equipped with a steel sliding keel and an engine fixed on a pantograph.

Our constructor Jacek Daszkiewicz has applied an innovative shape of the hull bottom to make the yacht fast. We also assume very efficient (high) initial and final stability to ensure safety of sailing.

TECHNICAL DATA

PREMIERE 2017

The world premiere of Antila 24.4 took place at sailing fairs in Düsseldorf held from 21.01.2017 till 29.01.2017. Antila 24.4 is an interesting offer mainly for private shipowners – due to its easy one-person operation servicing. Nevertheless, thanks to its spacious interior, it is also appreciated by charter companies. The interior design is not much different from that of Antila 26. There is enough space for 6 full-size bunks, a kambuz and a toilet. The charter version can have additional folding bunks. The deck has been built with a focus on safe and comfortable sailing. All ropes (lines) for sails handling have been connected to the cockpit. The yacht is equipped with full stabilization of a mast together with a gate to lay it down, a rotational keel and a rudder blade vertically lifted (hoisted). A spacious cockpit and a relatively low superstructure ensure excellent sight distance while sailing. Antila 24.4 has received a reward for the best product in its class granted by the Polish Chamber of Marine and Water Sports. In a competition Land Rover Polish Yachts organized by the monthly magazine „Sails and Land Rover” it obtained the title of the Yacht of 2018.

The new product launched in 2012 by the Antila Shipyard from Radom was the sailing yacht 26CC – a gold medal winner at the Boatshow fairs 2012 in Łódź. This yacht was also granted the (First Prize) Main Reward in the category of Charter Yacht 2012 at the Mazovian Fairs of Water Sports in Giżycko.

The boat, whose style is fairly similar to that of Antila 27, has been designed by the construction team of Adam & Michał Orych. The new design of Antila 26CC is classical and futuristic at the same time. The boat looks marvelous from each side, particularly when you look at its shape with the chine of a hull and a water-line. This yacht, as any other Antila models, focus on safety as well as high comfort provided both in a cockpit and in a mess room.

Ergonomic, spacious and very carefully planned cockpit guarantees comfort during sailing and also during mooring. Wide half decks enable freedom of moving around the deck. Slender rigging with large area (surface) of the sails as well as modern shape of the hull guarantee very good nautical parameters. The innovations applied in the mesa room allowed for dividing the interior of the boat into a kambuz, a separate toilet compartment and two independent lockable cabins with double bunks (berths). Already at a first glance the yacht makes an impression of being a symbol of comfort. Antila 26CC is a product which was created with application (usage) of the best available materials – the luxury and stylish interior, comfortable seats, well constructed mattresses with perfectly made stitching, the best quality materials with alcantry upholstery and its elements in different colours. Application of LED type lighting makes the interior well-lighted at minimal energy consumption. The floor and the cockpit boarded with Teak (Tectona grandis) wood imported from Myanmar (Burma), India and Laos add to the complete feeling of luxury and comfort. We are proud of having created a yacht which satisfies even the most demanding tastes of sailors. Our yacht is manouevrable (good-turning), fast and safe both for private shipowners and for charter companies. Antila 26CC makes it possible to taste the world.

Antila 27 designed by the recognized European designers Michał and Adam Orych is a yacht whose idea has been based on a long-term experience of our designing team. It is a modern boat which follows the latest world trends. Attractive, dynamic body of the yacht is combined with ergonomic shaping of the deck and carefully elaborated details, which reflect discreet sport type elegance and sport characteristics.

The yacht is dedicated to both charter companies and private shipowners whose special requirements have been fulfilled by optimization of production with application (usage) of the latest available materials and technological solutions. Exceptionally easy operating and servicing of the boat is an effect of using sophisticated solutions and possibility of adding more options which would increase the boat’s standards. The interior of the yacht – 1,86m high – is large and arranged in such a way that it enables even up to 10 people to stay together in the mess room. The improved transverse stability allows for increasing the sails area (surface) and sailing speed even at lighter breeze, giving also the feeling of comfort and safety in more difficult conditions. The shape of the hull has been designed to enable reaching high speeds as well as good manoeuvrability (turning) and ease of steering – all of this providing real joy of sailing. Antila 27 is also produced in a full sea version for those who like to be particularly challenged.

Antila 33 is a continuation of the successful lines of Antila 27 and Antila 26CC which are appreciated both in Poland and at foreign markets. Modern and dynamic outline with a hull length of 10,5m and the characteristic chine of the hull make this yacht to be clearly distinguished from other vessels. Spacious and ergonomic cockpit with a fixed table and a separated steersman’s station (stand) with two steering wheels, together with easy sails handling make sailing by this yacht pleasant and comfortable for its captain and his crew. Asymmetrical companion way allows for easier rigging operating and much better interior arrangement. Three lockable cabins, each with a vestibule and a fairly large wardrobe, plus full-size bunks in the mess room allow for comfortable sailing even for a quite numerous crew. Enlarged kambuz, a toilet with a shower and non-collision communication in the yacht’s interior, also in the centerboard version – are the additional advantages that were possible to be achieved by using the asymmetrical companion way. Taking the best possible advantage of the yacht’s width and its relatively high ballast coefficient (ratio) enabled for providing very good transverse stability which in relation to the slender rigging, large area (surface) of the sails and optimum hull guarantee very good nautical parameters. Antila 33 is a proposal for those sailors who appreciate luxury and modernity on inland and sea waters.

Antila 33.3 review: The ideal lakeland explorer

This Polish swing-keel boat with clever folding mast system is perfect for exploring the vast Masurian lakes

Lake sailing in Poland is very different to coastal sailing. In many ways it’s more relaxing. There are no tides to contend with and because you can find a marina or pontoon wherever you are, there’s no requirement to plan a day’s sailing. You can simply go where the wind takes you. When you’ve had enough, just beach-up or anchor in a creek.

antila yacht

Anchored in a creek in Masuria

But you need your wits about you too. Sailors have to be tuned-in to sudden wind shifts and lulls, blasts between islands that fizzle into nothing, or vice versa. Some lakes are so big you can barely see the shore, connected by canals so shallow it’s easy to run aground. Masts, keels and rudders go up and down all day – and this is where boat design gets clever. Self-charter is possible, but it certainly helps to have a local skipper… and a forgiving boat.

Dziewiata Lady M – our Antila 33.3 charter boat: Patrycja Tomala Photography

For our adventure with Undiscovered Sailing , our hosts Wojtek and Patrycja Tomala chose an Antila 33.3. Along with the Maxus, this is one of the most popular charter yachts on the lakes.

Antila Yachts is a Polish family-run business, producing boats from 24 to 33ft. One of the largest yachts you’ll see in the region, the Antila 33.3 has many features that make lake sailing easier. Whilst our boat Dziewiata [the 9th] Lady M didn’t come with a radio or electronics – nor even a wind indicator or compass, it did have a bow-thruster, diesel heating and a very nifty folding mast system.

The mast can go up or down in 10 minutes. Photo: Ali Wood

The latter is essential, because the 180 miles of waterways – stretching from the lower Vistula to the Russian border (Kaliningrad) – are connected by canals and rivers with low bridges. We raised and lowered our mast at least twice a day, and it was a simple task thanks to the clever pulley system, aided by an electric winch.

Usually the Antila 33.3 comes with a fully battened mainsail (28.1m2) and self-tacking jib (18.5m2). However, skipper Wojtek requested a larger (23m2), genoa for our trip knowing that we were keen sailors. A gennaker/ code zero is also an option.

Twin helms and a beautiful sunset! Photo: Ali Wood

During our five-day charter we only covered a quarter of the vast lake district. Wojtek chose the northern end of the lakes for us, which was quieter (we saw just a handful of boats) with more challenging sailing due to the many islands and narrow waterways.

Buoyage was limited, and there were protected nature reserves where engines were forbidden. Under full sail Dziewiata Lady M pointed high, sailed fast and was smooth and well balanced. Even with the larger foresail she was easy to tack and gybe.

With no instruments, we sailed by line-of-sight and trimmed the sails accordingly. Or, if we just felt like a blast, we sailed around the cormorant-inhabited islands, getting as close as we dared until Wojtek told us to tack. I especially loved the twin helms, enabling us to switch to the high side for better visibility.

Mast lowering

To get from one lake to another, or to visit one of the many charming Masurian towns, we had to negotiate road bridges. The first job was to lower the boom to the deck by releasing the lazyjacks.

Next, one of us would go to the bow to remove the forestay pin and lift the A-frame whilst the other released the mast purchase line in the cockpit. This needed to be done smoothly and at a consistent pace, keeping two turns on the winch. The lowered mast then rested on a frame at the stern. The process took no more than 10 minutes.

Once under the bridge, we’d do the same in reverse, taking care to check no lines had got caught under the mast step as it reconnected with the deck. Wojtek continually looked in front and behind. Electric winches are great, he told us, but you need to be careful to avoid snagging as it’s too easy to damage the rig. Indeed, on the day of our arrival we saw a sorry looking ‘banana mast’ in the boatyard waiting for repair (or scrap).

When we passed a yacht raising the mast manually, I was grateful for our electric winch. A crew on the coachroof was vigorously sweating the line to help the winchman in the cockpit. It looked like hard work!

On entering the canals we turned on the engine and lifted the rudder (which can draw as little as 45cm) and keel (which reduces draft from 1.85m to 0.6m). Once raised, the keel swings into a casing that forms part of the saloon table. If you hit an underwater object, the rudder and/or keel will kick-up automatically to prevent damage. This happened whilst I was helming on the canal to Wegorzewo. I moved to the side of the canal to let a vessel past and the rudder must have caught the bank.

Antilla also makes a seagoing version of the Antila 33.3, which is CE category B as opposed to C, and has a fixed keel among other modifications.

Skippers typically moor stern-to in Poland, and fix the bow to a trot mooring retrieved with a boat hook. This is where the Vetus bow-thruster comes in handy. Dziewiata Lady M could easily ‘stand still’ whilst we grabbed the line, or waited for a boat to pass in tight quarters. With an open side, stern and bathing platform, the Antila 33.3 is an easy boat to access from the shore or (if the weather’s nice) the water after a dip.

Accommodation

Whilst in the Med or Caribbean you might typically charter a 38ft to 46ft yacht, we had plenty of space for the four of us on our 33-footer. Laura and I both had a double cabin at the stern and Wojtek and Patrycja shared a large, double-door cabin at the bow.

antila yacht

There’s room for two in each of the aft cabins

It would be tighter with six people (two in the saloon), but still comfortable with plenty of room for luggage in the lockers. Antila claims the boat can sleep up to 10 people with a maximum payload of 910kg. However, Undiscovered Sailing sensibly caps it at six.

The saloon was spacious with a large table where we spent lively evenings drinking Polish cider and playing Skip-bo. Because of the pale wood finish, 1.95m ceiling and many windows, the boat let in lots of natural light and we didn’t turn on the LED spotlights until late.

Aside from a canal boat holiday I did last Autumn, this was the first time I’ve enjoyed central heating on a charter. Though the weather was mostly pleasant, we had a few rainy days and cool evenings. The diesel-fuelled Webasto heating was a very welcome addition.

Wojtek and Patrycja Tomala of Undiscovered Sailing

I was surprised by how little we used the Yanmar 21 HP engine to charge the batteries. We did top-up using shore-power in the marinas, but happily spent a night at anchor in a creek, and a full day either side, whilst still having plenty of power for lights, heating, fridge, bow-thruster, electric winch and head.

Not having to power up instruments helped, and for me, this was a big plus-point of chartering in the Polish lakes. It felt like a luxury version of dinghy or day-sailing in a giant harbour. We were surrounded by forest and reed-fringed islands. We rarely knew what time it was and had the freedom to sail where we wanted, and enjoy the scenery and wildlife without double-checking instruments or trying to push the boat for extra knots.

Much as I enjoyed our blustery sails, one of my favourite moments was actually being becalmed. In the busy Solent I’d have no doubt put the engine on, but in Masuria, we simply drifted in silence, feeling the warmth of the sun as it beat through the clouds and listening to a pair of cuckoos call out across the water. When you don’t know how fast you’re going and your destination isn’t important, you stop caring and learn to enjoy the moment, and Dziewiata Lady M is certainly the boat for day-dreaming and relaxation.

MINŐSÉG

Túravitorlások prémium megoldásokkal

Letisztult, modern fomák

Sportos menettulajdonságok

Mi megvalósítjuk álmait!

Az Antila Yachts hajógyár egy modern, 35 éves hajógyártói tapasztalattal rendelkező, professzionális vállalkozás, ahol egy 50 fős csapat, a 24 – 34 láb közötti méretkategóriában készíti középkategóriás túravitorlásait.

A gyár sportos tulajdonságokkal rendelkező tengeri és tavi túravitorlásai nagy népszerűségnek örvendenek Európa-szerte és 2018-tól, képviseletünkön keresztül megérkeztek Magyarországra is.

Termékpalettánk - a legújabb tervezési irányelvek alapján - az elmúlt 7 évben teljesen újjászületett.

Modern, skandináv dizájnt követő konstrukcióink főtervezője a Svédországban alkotó, lengyel származású Michal Orych.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
