I was attracted to a very sweet little Compac 16 on the internet that sold before I got there. I've been actively searching for a small trailer able boat and like the looks of these little boats but - how do they sail? Are they Fun? Fast? Stable? Safe? Asking all Compac 16 owner to chime in. Thanks, Mike

Although I'm not a Compac 16 owner, I'll chime in anyhow. Before I got my little gem of a boat I was considering a Compac 16 as an option and I liked it. I have been around a few but never sailing on one. One thing I like to do is read about adventures in small sailboats. I read a few of people on Compac 16's, here are the links if your interested. A lot of times they will give hints of how the boat handles and sails in their journals. http://www.adventurevista.com/Cruising-Florida-2010.php http://www.valsimon.com/SailingtotheBahamas.htm

I just took my 1978 Com-Pac 16 out for the first time yesterday. She was quick, stable and fun. I had three adults and two kids on board with light winds and we were doing 6 mph. When we caught the wind gusts she listed over, but we were never close to flipping. I will probably have to order one of those owners manuals I keep hearing about, but a couple of morons who never sailed more than a Sunfish figured it out and had a blast.

I have just bought one, haven't taken it out yet still trying to gather a few things to get it ready to go out.

The design is the most critical part of your new sail. Ensuring the sail fits and performs its best is a must for our crew. The Precision Sails Design team are experts at their craft. Unlike other sail lofts all of our sailors work one-on-one with a designer to perfect their Compac 16 Mk 2 sail.

There are many factors that affect the performance and design of your sails. Location, sailing experience, and weather conditions all come into play when picking the perfect sail. The entire process was simple and both sales and the design team were in regular contact if there were any questions. The customer portal was easy to use and lets you keep track of where in the process your sails are. Great sails, great service -Graham Edwards (Facebook)

“ We received our spinnaker and launched it yesterday and I just wanted to let you know how pleased we are with it. The service we received from your company was exceptional and the quality of your product is second to none. We will certainly be return customers in the next few months to replace our main and jib sails and will recommend your company to all our sailing buddies. Once again-thank you.” -Daniel Jackson (Google)
“ we had good communication during the planning stages and the knowledgeable people at precision sails really got me fixed up good! The sails look and work fabulous! my boat sails better than it ever had! couldn’t be more pleased with the product AND the service!” -Fred Jelich (Facebook)
“ Our new furling jib for a Corsair 27 Had to be specially designed due to the height of the furler, but this was accomplished quickly and in short order we had our sail which fits beautifully and has a great shape. It’s everything we could have wanted, high tech design, thoughtfully executed and affordable.” -Nancy Y. (Yelp)

Welcome to the Com-Pac Idea

Com-Pac Yachts began business in 1974 with our first boat, the Com-Pac 16. The idea then was to build a seaworthy yacht with a strong commitment to value. (For the full story, see Hutchins Company Profile .) Since then we have expanded our line and today we have twelve models, six cat-rigged sailboats, five sloop rigged sailboats and one power launch. The Com-Pac line covers a wide range of sizes from a 14' day sailor to the Com-Pac 27/3 cruising yacht . Each model, regardless of size, is built with the same exacting attention to detail and that same commitment to value.

Our line of modern cat-rigged models (dubbed “A New Breed of Catboat”) offer the ultimate in trailer-sailing ease and rig set up. All come with the Mastendr™ quick-rig sailing system that allows for the boom, sail, and gaff to be left installed on the boat while the mast is folded or raised. The shrouds stay attached and the head stay disconnects with the flip of the pre-adjusted forestay self-locking lever. This system, unique to Com-Pac, adds an ease and convenience to trailer sailing that is really astounding. Your mast is up and you are ready to go in seconds, not minutes.

Our newest sloop-rigged models are the Eclipse SL , the Legacy , and the Legacy Sport daysailer. We consider these yachts “crossover” models. We have taken all of the convenience and features of our cat boat line and applied them to these new exciting sloops. Features include the Mastendr™ (Eclipse), Boomtendr™ (Legacy & Sport), keel centerboard hull configuration and low riding trailers for ease of launching and retrieval.

Com-Pac Horizon Day Cat

The three traditionally rigged sloops ( 23/IV , 23 Pilothouse , and 27/3 ) have full masthead, eight stay rigs and fixed keels. As such they can be sailed in areas and conditions that lesser sloops would be wise to avoid. Many of our sloops have long cruises to their credit. Coastal cruising, Gulf of Mexico crossings, and long term Bahamas cruises are a few that are recorded. The 23/IV and 23 Pilothouse are trailerable but they are still full fledged cruising yachts. We did not compromise sea-worthiness or comfort. When the 23/IV or 23 Pilothouse is fitted with the available custom trailer, they can easily be taken over the road for vacation or winter storage.

Cp35 Salon

The new launch with the available electric propulsion is perfect for an evening of touring the harbor, canals and waterways or even more varied areas of interest with the standard 2 cylinder diesel engine.

All of our models come with an extraordinary list of amenities and standard equipment. From the 14' Picnic Cat to the 27' cruiser, you will find everything you need for that day sail, day cruise, weekend getaway or extended cruise.

If you are looking for something other than an “off the shelf” yacht, then Com-Pac is for you. Many builders today do not give you any more choices than cushion fabric and canvas colors. Whether your yacht is 14' or 27', nowhere else will you find the freedom of involvement and creativity you will find by sitting down with us and discussing your dream yacht. Our answer to 95% of requests for personalization is “we can do that.”

At The Helm

At The Helm is about sharing my sailing experiences and innovations I have tried over many years. I have owned many different classes from dinks, catamarans and settling on trailerable mono-hulls. Your sailing grounds are from lakes to the oceans and the capability of going solo or with family, or friends is possible. I believe if you can sail, you are ready for the unexpected. With that experience, there is very little in life that will stand in your way.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

2007 Com-Pac Picnic Cat

2007 Com-Pac Picnic Cat

St. Petersburg, Florida

Model Picnic Cat

2007 Com-Pac Picnic Cat 2009 COM-PAC Picnic Cat with trailer, The Picnic Cat is from the drawing board of Clark Mills, designer of our former 16 CB and our 23/3, and well known also as the designer of the Optimist Pram and the Windmill One Design. Unlike her sister Com-Pac's the Picnic Cat has a centerboard rather than a keel. With her centerboard up she is beach able. have to ask something unusual. Sailed many large boats and am ASA 106. However, here comes the dumn question. Bought a Compac 16, 1980. Asked the guy I bought it from , a dealer, where does the boom hook up to the mast? He said it is easy but then mentioned, maybe with a bungie. Boom has a sliding lockable pin. Cannot find the matching gooseneck on mast. Help!!! Appreciate and thank anybody that can clear this up.

krisscross

See if it goes into the sail track on the mast.

yes, it does, but how does it stay in place? There still is the question how the sliding pin and twist will locate it. thanks. Think there is something missing that fits into the wider slot to lock it. Could be the gooseneck or whatever.

Typically in those smaller boats you first load the main sail into the sail track, following by the boom pin. The pin is held in place by a downhaul line going from the eye on the bottom part of the pin sliding into the sail track. And the sail tension above will not let it come out of the slot (pin needs to stay above the wide slot used for loading it). It is a very simple and effective system.

One more thing... If you want to drop the main sail and still keep the boom in place, you release the main halyard, pull the boom down so that the pin moves into the lower part of the track, below the wide loading slot, and pull the sail down. If the sail is sticking hard in the track, you need to apply some lubricant to it. I hope this works for you.

jephotog

I think Krisscross covered most of your options Downhaull off of gooseneck or Pin in the mast. Drill a hole in the mast side to side that goes through the mast track. You can find a quick release pin or a pin and cleavis to fit this hole or better yet buy the pin and drill to its dimensions. Drop the gooseneck in the track and slide the pin in. When you want to remove the boom, pull the pin and slide out the gooseneck.
