briatore force blue auction

Flavio Briatore’s Force Blue superyacht ends up at auction

Minimal Logo

Seized in 2010 for tax evasion, Briatore’s Force Blue superyacht will be auctioned in late January

, between the search for a new owner and the announcement of a final verdict that has been awaited for over a decade.

Actually, the legal issues related to Flavio Briatore ‘s superyacht , seized in 2010 off the coast of La Spezia, seemed to be resolved with the limitation on appeal. The boat, however, has remained in the care of the judicial guardian and will be put up for sale on January 27th , before the Supreme Court expresses itself in this regard: the hearing is set for February 12th.

The reasons why the Force Blue will be auctioned (the auction is authorized by the Appeal Court of Genoa) would be represented by the potential loss of the superyacht overall value and the management of maintenance costs, deemed too high by the keeper. A difficulty that would have worsened last year due to the lockdown, which inevitably interrupted the charter activities, however authorized on board the Force Blue since May 2010, when the Italian Financial Police seized the boat in the waters of La Spezia.

Flavio Briatore’s Force Blue superyacht ends up at auction: confiscation, restitution or compensation?

briatore force blue 62-meter superyacht auction

The boat, built by Royal Denship in 2002, is 62 meters long, has three decks and weighs 1,325 tons . It is owned by Briatore’s Autumn Sailing society and is one among the 100 largest superyachts in the world, as well as one among the most famous boats belonging to VIPs.

What is striking is the fact that the sale will take place two weeks before the final decision by the Supreme Court, which could return the pleasure boat to the Italian businessman or confirm the seizure. if the boat has already passed into the hands of the new owner, Briatore would only be entitled to a cash compensation . We’ll see. What is certain is that the long journey of the Force Blue is now coming to an end.

Flavio Briatore appeals tax fraud conviction over use of yacht Force Blue

Flavio Briatore, the Italian tycoon and former boss of the Benetton and Renault F1 racing teams, is appealing a recent sentence to 23 months in prison for tax evasion.

The sentence, which was handed down by the Italian courts, relates to the entrepreneur’s use of superyacht Force Blue , bought by Briatore for just under £70m in 2009 from Roy Speer, the American founder of Home Shopping Network.

The Italian Financial Police boarded and sequestrated Force Blue back in 2010 just over five years ago in May 2010 in La Spezia, near Genoa on the Italian Riviera. The reason for the action and subsequent charge was the accusation that Briatore had not paid the appropriate amount of taxes on the fuel used by the yacht.

The action eventually resulted in a court case and Briatore’s conviction for tax evasion of €3.5 million. Briatore denied the charges and his lawyers have launched an immediate appeal against his sentence.

He disputed the authority’s charge that Force Blue was entirely for his personal use and that of his friends and family. The prosecution in turn pointed out that the yacht was registered to a charter company in a tax haven and that the company enjoyed a number of tax breaks that would not have been eligible for a single owner and personal use. They also pointed out that everything on the boat from the bed linen to the crockery had the initials FB on them. The defence pointed out that these were the initials of the yacht and that it is known that all big charter boats contents and furnishings bear the logo or initials of a boat.

In a high profile career, Briatore has often courted controversy and his personal life has occasionally played out in the glare of publicity. He was banned for life – later successfully overturned on appeal – by the F1 authorities following accusations that he had deliberately orchestrated a crash at the 2008 Singapore grand prix.

The appeal continues.

Welcome Aboard

I think you will find that Force Blue is a yacht to suit all tastes. She is designed to provide you with luxurious living of the highest quality, embracing elegance, comfort and total relaxation. There is a huge range of on-board facilities, including a fully equipped Spa, an elevator serving all decks and water sports equipment to match the expectations of even the most demanding users, offset by exquisite dining in a choice of sophisticated settings. Above all, I would like you to know that Force Blue is totally free safe and seaworthy. The design of her immensely strong 207-foot steel hull conceived by the American naval architect Tom Fexas was inspired by the merchant vessels which ply their trade in the hostile waters of the North Sea. Force Blue meets the stringent contruction rules of Lloyd's Register of Shipping; in addition, she complies with all aspects of the rigorous safety requirements laid down by the British Maritime & Coastguard Agency. She was built to such extraordinarily high standards in Denmark - the home of perfection - by the award-winning shipyard Royal Denship. Force Blue can transport you, your family and guests on a voyage of sheer delight or, equally, take you on an adventure to the most remote corners of the earth - at all times in the greatest degree of comfort and safety. Please enjoy her. Flavio Briatore

Former Formula 1 patron Bernie Ecclestone bought Flavio Briatore’s yacht

The story involved two of the most famous names in Formula 1 .

Bernie Ecclestone, for decades at the head of the direction of this sport, seems to have recently bought the Force Blue mega yacht at the auction, previously owned by the famous businessman and former Formula 1 team manager Flavio Briatore.

The background

The story originated in May 2010 when the Italian finance police seized the yacht, owned by Briatore since 2002, while it was in the waters of the Italian city of La Spezia. Onboard, in addition to the crew, were also the showgirl Elisabetta Gregoraci, today the entrepreneur’s ex-wife, and her son Nathan Falco.

The accusation made by the investigators was clear right away. The entrepreneur was accused of having simulated a commercial activity of chartering his luxurious boat in the period 2006 – 2010. This would have allowed him to use the Force Blue, formally owned by the company Autumn Sailing Limited, for recreational use in Italian territorial waters, avoiding him to pay the due import VAT, equal to approximately 3.5 million euros.

Furthermore, again according to the prosecution, the yacht’s fuel was indicated as exempt from excise duties while it had to be burdened by ordinary taxes.

The first instance trial against Flavio Briatore ended in 2015, with a suspended sentence of 1 year and 11 months in prison for tax crimes related to the charter of the Force Blue yacht.

After various judicial vicissitudes that saw Briatore first convicted and then partially acquitted by misdemeanor prescription, the current situation sees a new trial that has reached the last level of judgment.

Why the auction of the yacht?

It was auctioned on January 27, 2021, at one-third of the market value. This is the fate to which the judges of the court of Genoa condemned the yacht Force Blue. The Flavio Briatore luxurious floating villa was seized in 2010 for the alleged evasion of 3.6 million VAT on imports.

The yacht was awarded to the highest bidder on an auction basis of 7 million euros, which is less than half of the 20 million estimated value at the time of the seizure. On the evaluation weighted the serious degradation conditions in which the Force Blue finds itself after a decade of forced inactivity, interrupted only occasionally for rental in the summer season.

This last solution was necessary to contain management costs which, however, did not avoid the accumulation of debts by the State, which therefore opted to sell the yacht at the preventive auction without waiting for the end of the Briatore’s process.

The latter had tried to block, through his lawyers, the sale by presenting four instances which, however, were vain.

What kind of boat are we talking about?

Force Blue is a superyacht over 63 meters long, almost 12 meters wide, and with a gross tonnage of over 1,325 tons. It was built and launched in 2002 by the Royal Denship, a Danish construction house that is no longer in business.

It is propelled by two 2000 horsepower engines and reaches a top speed of 17 knots. The cruising one stops at 14.

Comfort is ensured by the presence of an onboard crew that can reach up to 17 people.

Ecclestone’s entry onto the scene.

It was enough for the British tycoon to offer € 490,000 more than the seven million auction base to get the boat.

To contend for the boat through an offer were in 4.

In addition to the 90-year-old Bernard Ecclestone, the other competitors were all companies: Lethora Holdings Ltd based in the Virgin Islands , Sulfur Ltd based in the Bahamas , and Locamar Sa based in Luxembourg.

All offers in a sealed envelope were delivered to the notary Ugo Bechini who opened each one on the morning of January 27th, at the Hotel Bristol, a very central Genoese hotel.

Future developments

Is it all finally over? Absolutely not! In fact, as we said earlier, the process that sees the ownership of Force Blue as a dispute is not concluded.

Paradoxically, with a reversal of the sentence, Flavio Briatore could still return to being his legitimate owner, canceling the auction with which Ecclestone won the yacht.

We just have to wait until the next 9 of June to know the final sentence.

Super yacht Force Blue, 18-month jail sentence for Briatore

Genoa - The Genoa Court of Appeal has sentenced Italian entrepreneur Flavio Briatore to 18 months in prison.

briatore yacht force blue

Genoa - The Genoa Court of Appeal has sentenced Italian entrepreneur Flavio Briatore to 18 months in prison. He, together with four others, was charged with tax fraud connected with the leasing of the superyacht Force Blue, which was initially seized off the coast of La Spezia by Italian law enforcement agents in May 2010; at the time, Briatore’s wife, Elisabetta Gregoraci, her son, and about twenty crew members were aboard the yacht. Prosecutors had asked for a four-year prison sentence. The trial’s initial phase saw a 23-month suspended sentence being passed, as well as the seizure of the yacht. A ccording to the prosecution, Briatore and the other four defendants used the superyacht for recreational purposes in Italian territorial waters from July 2006 to May 2010 without paying outstanding VAT duty worth €3.6 million. Furthermore, they unlawfully declared the yacht’s fuel as exempt from duty, and issued invoices for non-existent transactions. On appeal, the yacht’s captain, Ferdinando Tarquini, was given an 18-months sentence. Dominique Warluzel, one of the administrators of the firm that owns the yacht, Autumn Sailing, also received an 18-month sentence. Co-accused Maria Pia De Fusco, an administrator until 2008, had her case dropped due to statute of limitations. Proceedings were dropped as well for Laurence Eckle Teyssedou, another of the firm’s administrators. The ruling confirmed the seizure of Force Blue, that will only be allowed to sail under special administration.

Porcelain and pottery marks - Krasnodar marks

The Krasnodar porcelain and faience factory "Chaika" was created by the decision of the Soviet government as the first new porcelain factory in the country since 1917 revolution. First plate was produced on March 3, 1960. Next year the factory started exporting its products.

In August 1968, the first batch of faience products was produced. For many years the plant was the largest manufacturer of ceramic dishes in the USSR.

In 1991, the enterprise was privatized by the labor collective and reorganized into ZAO PKF Kubanfarfor. In January 2020 production was transfered from Krasnodar to Belorechensk (a town in Krasnodar region).

Explosion heard in Russian city of Krasnodar

From CNN's Josh Pennington and Hira Humayun

An explosion was heard in the Russian city of Krasnodar on Friday.

An explosion was heard in the Russian city of Krasnodar on Friday morning, state news agencies Tass and RIA Novosti reported.

Citing the operational headquarters of Krasnodar territory, the news agencies said the roof and windows of a building on Morskaya Street had been damaged. No casualties have been reported so far.

Social media videos geolocated by CNN to Morskaya Street show what appears to be an unmanned aerial vehicle in the sky, followed by the sound of an explosion. Other social media images show smoke rising from the building, and another image shows the building damaged.

"According to information coming to the city's emergency call center, at 04:17 a.m. in the city of Krasnodar, an explosion was heard in the area of a building on Morskaya Street, 54/2," Tass said.

"Emergency services were sent to the scene. No casualties have been reported. There was damage to the building's roof and windows, but no fire," the report said.

Iran has a direct route to send Russia weapons – and Western powers can do little to stop it

From CNN's Lauren Kent and Salma Abdelaziz

The waters of the Caspian Sea appear deceptively calm. But this sea route – which provides a direct path between Iran and Russia – is increasingly busy with cargo traffic, including suspected  weapons transfers  from Tehran to Moscow.

As cooperation between the two countries deepens, the Caspian Sea route is being used to move drones, bullets, and mortar shells that the Russian government has purchased from the Iranian regime to bolster its war effort in Ukraine, according to experts. Tracking data shows that vessels in the region are increasingly going “dark” – suggesting growing intent to obfuscate the movement of goods.

Last year, data from Lloyd’s List Intelligence revealed a September spike in the number of gaps in vessels tracking data in the Caspian. That’s shortly after the United States and Ukrainian governments say  Moscow acquired drones  from Tehran last summer. Russia’s use of Iranian drones  increased in the fall , including against critical energy infrastructure in Ukraine.

And analysts say that Ukraine’s Western allies would have little power to stop such arms deliveries.

“There is no risk to Iranian exports in the Caspian Sea because of the bordering countries – they don’t have the capability or motive to interdict in these sorts of exchanges,” said Martin Kelly, lead intelligence analyst at security company EOS Risk Group.

Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, all former Soviet republics, are the other nations with ports on the Caspian Sea.

It’s a “perfect environment for this trade to go unopposed,” Kelly added.

"Get out": Influx of Russians to Georgia stokes old enmities

From CNN's Christian Edwards

Mother of Georgia statue in Tbilisi.

Above Tbilisi’s Old Town stands the Mother of Georgia statue, like a less imposing Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. “Kartlis Deda,” as she is known to Georgians, holds a wine cup in her left hand and a sword in her right. She offers a choice to new arrivals. Come as a friend, you are our guest. Come as an enemy, you are not welcome.

Tbilisi, an ancient Silk Road city, is no stranger to foreigners turning up on its streets. But the arrival of more than 100,000 Russians in the country since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year has left Georgians uncertain whether to welcome them as friends or shun them as foes.

The government’s recent attempt to  force through  what critics see as a Kremlin-style “foreign agent” law, and the  huge protests  which prevented this, have not helped émigrés to settle in or locals to feel at ease alongside the new arrivals.

Many in Georgia fear what they see as the creeping Russification of their country – a story they know all too well.

On the streets of Tbilisi, the reception for Russian émigrés has also been mixed. “It’s a whole range of attitudes,” said Ivan, a 20-something IT consultant from a city in Russia’s far east. CNN is withholding Ivan’s real name, to protect him from retribution should he ever return to Russia.

Some Georgians are “warm and welcoming” and treat Russians as their “brothers,” Ivan told CNN. Others tell them to “get out.” The key difference is age, he has found.

From CNN staff

An aerial image shows destruction in the frontline town of Bakhmut, Ukraine, in this handout picture released on May 21.

The Russian reconnaissance ship Ivan Khurs was seemingly hit by an unmanned surface vessel in the Black Sea, new video shows, disputing Moscow's claim it had  been able to thwart a Ukrainian attack  on the craft.

Here are other headlines you should know:

Bakhmut developments: Ukraine's number of clashes with Wagner mercenaries in and around Bakhmut has been decreasing over the past few days, according to the spokesperson for the eastern grouping of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Meanwhile, more than 100 Ukrainians who fought in the Bakhmut area and were captured by Russian troops have been released in a prisoner swap, the head of Ukraine’s presidential office said Thursday. And the head of Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, told CNN he has handed over to Ukrainian authorities the body of a retired US Army Special Forces soldier who died fighting for Bakhmut.

Elsewhere in Ukraine: Russian officials in the occupied southern city of Berdiansk said Ukrainian forces have struck the city with a missile . A member of Russia's local administration in Zaporizhzhia said he still did not have information on casualties, adding that response teams were on site. And in the eastern Donetsk region, an official has accused Russian forces of destroying a dam and endangering nearby residents.

US does not support attacks on Russian soil and has "made it very clear" to Ukraine, White House official says

From CNN's DJ Judd

White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby appears on CNN on Thursday, May 25.

US President Joe Biden's administration has reiterated in conversations with Ukraine that it does not support attacks on Russian soil, White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told CNN Thursday.

“We have again made it very clear to the Ukrainians what our expectations are about attacking Russia — we don't want to encourage or enable that, we certainly don't want any US-made equipment used to attack Russian soil,” Kirby told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

“And we have gotten assurances from the Ukrainians that they will respect those wishes … we have been very clear that we want Ukraine to be able to defend its own soil, its own territory. They have been attacked. They have been invaded. They have a right to defend themselves," he continued. "But, we've also been clear, well, that we don't want to see this war escalate beyond this, the devastation and the violence that is already visited on the Ukrainian people.”

The conversations with Ukraine didn’t involve “outlining consequences” but were “simply a reaffirmation," Kirby told CNN. He added that these discussions have happened "as recently as over just the last day or so."

Some context: Kirby's comments come on the heels of a CNN report that anti-Putin Russian fighters, fighting alongside Ukrainian armed forces, conducted a raid inside Russian territory.

In an interview with CNN’s Sam Kiley, one of the Russian nationals said the raid was conducted using American-manufactured equipment purchased on the open market. Kirby said Thursday that he could not confirm that.

He instead said the US is providing equipment "to be used to defend Ukrainian soil."

Russian reconnaissance ship seemingly hit by unmanned surface vessel, video shows

From CNN’s Vasco Cotovio and Yulia Kesaieva in Kyiv, and Sharon Braithwaite and Gianluca Mezzofiore in London

Footage shared by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense on Thursday appeared to show the moments just before the unmanned vessel made an impact with the Russian reconnaissance ship, Ivan Khurs.

The Russian reconnaissance ship Ivan Khurs was seemingly hit by an unmanned surface vessel in the Black Sea, new video shows, disputing a claim by Moscow, which said on Wednesday it had been able to thwart a Ukrainian attack on the craft.

The video is filmed from a camera placed on the surface vessel. It shows the vessel as it approaches a larger ship at high speed.

CNN analysis determined the ship is likely to be the Ivan Khurs. It also shows the tip of the unmanned surface vessel, similar to the unmanned surface vessels seen in video posted by the Russian Ministry of Defense on Thursday.

The feed cuts as the vessel comes within a few yards of  the ship.

"When the Russian reconnaissance ship 'Ivan Khurs' met a Ukrainian drone," the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense said in a tweet . "Indeed, a perfect match!"

More background: On Wednesday, the Russian defense ministry acknowledged the attack on the Ivan Khurs but said all the surface vessels had failed to hit the ship.

"Today at 5:30 a.m., the armed forces of Ukraine made an unsuccessful attempt to attack the Ivan Khurs ship of the Black Sea Fleet with three unmanned speedboats," said the spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Defense, Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov. "All enemy boats were destroyed by fire from the standard armament of a Russian ship 140 kilometers northeast of the Bosphorus."

The Russian Ministry of Defense also shared footage that appears to show one of the surface vessels exploding as it is hit by gunfire.

"The ship ‘Ivan Khurs’ of the Black Sea Fleet continues to fulfill its tasks," Konashenkov added.

It is unclear what happened after the surface vessel seemingly hit the Ivan Khurs and how damaged the reconnaissance ship may have been during the attack.

CNN has reached out to Ukrainian sources for additional details but has yet to hear back.

Wagner chief claims to have handed over body of US Army veteran killed in Bakhmut

From CNN’s Clare Sebastian, Allegra Goodwin, Svitlana Vlasova and Sarah Dean

Army Staff Sgt. Nicholas Maimer, left, who was identified as the American citizen killed by Russian artillery in the embattled city of Bakhmut, is pictured with Senator James Risch.

The head of the Russian paramilitary company Yevgeny Prigozhin told CNN Thursday that he has handed the body of a retired US Army Special Forces soldier who was killed in the battle for the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut over to Ukraine.

In a response to CNN asking if Wagner had returned the body of Retired Army Staff Sgt. Nicholas Maimer as promised by Prigozhin last week, Prigozhin said in an audio recording: “Today at 1500 hours we handed over the body of the American Nicholas Maimer to the Ukrainian side.”

In a video shared with CNN by Prigozhin’s press service, the Wagner boss stands next to two coffins, one draped with an American flag and one with a Turkish flag, and says: “The American died in battle in the 'nest'” — one of the last contested areas in west Bakhmut — and added that the second coffin contained the body of a Turkish citizen who was in Bakhmut with his female partner.

“They were found under the ruins of a building, or more accurately he and his documents. When the Ukrainians withdrew they blew up the building, and they died under the destroyed building. We weren’t able to get her out, but we got him out and will return to his motherland,” Prigozhin says of the Turkish citizens.

CNN cannot independently verify the location in the video or the date it was filmed.

Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed to CNN that Maimer’s body, along with the body of a Turkish citizen, had been returned to Ukraine on Thursday during a POW exchange . A video shared by the group showed a coffin covered with an American flag which matched the coffin seen in the video with Prigozhin.

CNN is unable to independently confirm that the coffin contains Maimer’s body, or the circumstances in which he died.

Maimer's decades in uniform: According to Maimer’s service record provided to CNN, he served more than 20 years in uniform before retiring in 2018, according to his service record provided to CNN.

He served more than two years in the active-duty Army, leaving in December 1998; he then joined the National Guard in November 2000, and served about 18 years between three different Guard units before retiring in December 2018.

Among his awards and decorations are the Special Forces Tab, Army Commendation Medal and four Army Achievement Medals.

His uncle Paul Maimer told the Idaho Statesman his nephew had gone to Ukraine “as a humanitarian trying to do good for this world” and that the family wanted to bring him home for a “proper burial.”

“I think he’s deserving to be put to rest in a veterans cemetery,” he told the Statesman. “He might not have been fighting for our country, but he was fighting for the right reasons.”

Russia's transfer of tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus has begun, Lukashenko says

From CNN’s Uliana Pavlova

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko attends a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council at the Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow on Thursday.

The transfer of some tactical nuclear weapons from Russia to Belarus has begun, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said Thursday, according to state news agency BelTA.

"It was necessary to prepare storage sites, and so on. We did all this. Therefore, the movement of nuclear weapons began," Lukashenko said.

Lukashenko also promised the safety of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, saying: “Don’t worry about nuclear weapons. We are responsible for this. These are serious issues. Everything will be all right here.”

Some background:  This comes after Moscow and Minsk signed an agreement on deploying tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, one of Russia's neighbors and most loyal allies. Lukashenko  raised the possibility  of Russia placing strategic nuclear weapons in Belarus during a national address in March, while baselessly accusing Western countries of “preparing to invade” Belarus and “destroy” it.

Finland will send additional military equipment to Ukraine, defense ministry says

From CNN's Sarah Diab in London

Finland on Thursday pledged to send additional military equipment to Ukraine.

Finland’s 16th defense package to Ukraine will include anti-aircraft weapons and ammunition and will be worth 109 million euros (about $117 million), a Finnish defense ministry spokesperson told CNN.

That brings the total defense aid from Finland to Ukraine since Russian invasion began last year to 1.1 billion euros (about $1.18 billion).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the Finnish government for the aid in a tweet:

Ukraine shoots down Russian spy plane near Sea of Azov, air force commander says

From CNN's Victoria Butenko, Maria Kostenko, Andrew Carey and Oren Liebermann

A still from a video shared by Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk on Friday purports to show shooting down of Russian spy plane near the Sea of Azov. CNN is unable to immediately verify the video.

Ukraine shot down a Russian spy plane, Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk said in a post on Telegram .

The plane was brought down between the Russian cities of Yeysk and Krasnodar, over the east coast of the Sea of Azov, in a joint operation by the air force and the Defense Intelligence Directorate (GUR), a GUR source told CNN.

Oleshchuk also published a short video on Telegram that showed several bright lights in the night sky, purporting to be decoy flares sent off by the Russian plane. Flares are deployed by military aircraft to act as a decoy against heat-seeking missiles, but they do not affect radar-guided missiles, which do not rely on the engine's hot exhaust as a target.

An official statement from Russia’s Krasnodar region did not reference a Ukrainian strike but instead reported an air crash that started a fire on the ground.

Ukraine said the aircraft it targeted was a modernized version of the A-50 spy plane, which originally dates from the Soviet era. The downed plane had been used by Russia to control and guide missile strikes on Ukrainian cities, Ukraine’s GUR said.

CNN is unable to immediately verify both sides’ claims.

It would be the second such downing of a Russian A-50 plane in six weeks after Ukraine said it had carried out a successful strike on such an aircraft over the Sea of Azov on January 15.

Biden says he'll be speaking today with top US allies about Ukraine

From CNN’s Betsy Klein

US President Joe Biden speaks to governors during an event in the East Room of the White House in Washington, DC, on Friday.

US President Joe Biden said he will speak Friday by phone with a group of top allies as Ukraine marks two years after the full-scale Russian invasion.

“I’ll be speaking to the G7 folks, some of the heads of the European Union, and NATO today,” Biden told US governors during an event in the East Room.

Biden heralded the people of Ukraine on Friday and noted the United States’ leadership in forming a coalition to support the war-torn nation as it has responded to Russia over the past two years.

The call comes as Biden announced new sanctions on more than 500 targets to mark the war’s second anniversary.

The White House said on Friday that Biden will emphasize to allies that he will “continue to do everything he can to support Ukraine,” even as aid remains stalled in the House of Representatives while Speaker Mike Johnson refuses to bring the administration’s national security supplemental package to a vote.

New sanctions "just the start "of the US response to Navalny's death, White House says

US President Joe Biden's administration indicated that the newly announced set of more than 500 sanctions targeting Russia represents “just the start” of the US response to the death of opposition leader Alexey Navalny, suggesting there would be more action to come on the matter.

“You can expect more from the administration with respect to holding the Kremlin accountable for Mr. Navalny’s death. Today was just the start,” White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters.

Kirby did not offer a preview of those actions.

In 2021, before Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Biden said he told Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting in Switzerland that if Navalny died in prison, the consequences “would be devastating for Russia.”

The US, along with other Western governments, has levied a series of sanctions against Russia in recent years, but Russia has adapted to them — even though the war has diverted resources into military production and long-term prospects are far less rosy.

Senate majority leader calls for House to pass aid during visit to Ukraine

From CNN's Morgan Rimmer

US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer speaks during a press conference in Lviv, Ukraine, on Friday.

US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urged the House of Representatives to pass aid for Ukraine after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a visit to the country.

"We are here because the United States right now is at a turning point, an inflection point. If we don't stand by our (friends and) allies, allies around the world will shirk and move away from us. If we let our enemies, the autocrats of the world, succeed here, they will not stop," Schumer, a Democratic senator from New York, told reporters in Lviv, Ukraine.

Despite House Speaker Mike Johnson's refusal to hold a vote on the Senate-passed foreign aid package, Schumer insisted that the United States will not give up on Ukraine.

"The United States is with you. We will not abandon you. We will fight and fight and fight to get this needed aid to you and to your brave soldiers," he said.

"If Speaker Johnson put this bill on the floor today, we're confident it would pass with a large number of both Democrats and Republicans. So it's really in his hands," Schumer added. "Again: Speaker Johnson, history is looking down upon you, looking over your shoulder. Rise to the occasion."

Putin and Russian officials are "afraid" of public funeral, Navalny foundation investigations head says

From CNN's Radina Gigova in London and staff in Moscow

People gather at a makeshift memorial for Alexey Navalny in St. Petersburg, Russia, on February 16.

Russian authorities are trying to prevent a funeral ceremony for opposition leader Alexey Navalny, because they are "afraid" many people would want to attend, the head of investigations at Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation, Maria Pevchikh, said Friday.

"They are attempting to avoid the funeral farewell ceremony or a church sermon where people can physically approach the coffin, lay flowers and bid their farewells — this is what they are so afraid of," Pevchikh said during a live interview.

"Very many people, well within their right, will want to say farewell to Alexey and look at him for the very last time. And Putin is trying to prevent this," Pevchikh said. "He sees it as a kind of a rally, a political turbulence he does not need now. He doesn't want to see this on TV."

Pevchikh also said that although Navalny's mother is in the town of Salekhard — which is near the penal colony where Navalny was imprisoned and died — with her lawyer, she has to talk to investigators alone.

"Every day they are coming up with new ideas for blackmail," Pevchikh said.

Biden slams Congress for not passing aid to Ukraine despite Russian gains

From CNN’s Donald Judd

US President Joe Biden speaks to a bipartisan group of governors in the East Room of the White House in Washington, DC, on Friday.

US President Joe Biden blasted House Republicans for taking a two-week break and urged Speaker Mike Johnson and members of Congress to return and pass much-needed aid for Ukraine .

“They have to come back. They have to come back and get this done, because failure to support Ukraine in this critical moment will never be forgotten in history — it will be measured, and it will have impact for decades to come,” Biden said at a White House meeting with governors, noting Russia's recent battlefield gains .

He also offered praise for the Ukrainian people two years after Russia’s initial full-scale invasion, saying they “remain unbowed and unbroken in the face of Putin’s vigorous onslaught.”

“This is due to their sheer bravery and their sacrifice, but it's also due to us: Remember, the United States pulled together a coalition of more than 50 nations — 50 nations — for Ukraine,” he said. “We unified and expanded NATO — we can't walk away now.”

Some background: The speaker has resisted calls to bring a Senate-passed aid package up for a quick vote – a move that would require Democratic support and almost certainly spark a revolt from his right flank. The speaker has said the legislation, which includes over $60 billion in assistance for Ukraine, would not pass in its current form, and privately told Republicans last week there is “no rush” to address the issue.

Navalny's team offers reward for information about his death

From CNN's Darya Tarasova and Radina Gigova

Alexey Navalny's team is offering a reward for information about the death of the Russian opposition leader and the alleged perpetrators.

"For valuable and complete information about the murder and its perpetrators, we promise a reward of 20,000 euros (about $21,000) and organization of departure from the country, if you want it," Ivan Zhdanov, the director of Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation, said in a video message published Friday.

Navalny's team also called on members of the Russian military and law enforcement to anonymously contact them with any information about the circumstances that led to his death.

Friday marks a national military holiday in Russia.

US State Department imposes sanctions on 3 Russian prison officials for Navalny's death

From CNN's Jennifer Hansler

A picture taken on April 19, 2021 shows an exterior view of the IK-3 penal colony where jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny was held.

The US State Department on Friday imposed sanctions on three Russian prison officials in connection to the death of opposition figure Alexey Navalny.

The sanctions hit Valeriy Gennadevich Boyarinev, the deputy director of the Federal Penitentiary Service, which has oversight of the penal colony where Navalny died.

According to a State Department fact sheet, Boyarinev "reportedly instructed prison staff to exert harsher treatment on Aleksey Navalny while he was in detention."

"Following Navalny’s death, Boyarinev was promoted to 'Colonel General' by decree of Vladimir Putin," according to the fact sheet.

The sanctions also target Igor Borisovich Rakitin, "the overall head of the Federal Penitentiary Service of1322 Russia for the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region, in which Penal Colony IK-3 is located," and Vadim Konstantinovich Kalinin, the prison warden.

Navalny spokesperson says his mother was given ultimatum by investigators over his burial

From CNN's Anna Chernova

Lyudmila Navalnaya, mother of leader Alexei Navalny, delivers a video address in Salekhard, Russia, in this still image taken from a handout video released on February 22.

A spokesperson for the late Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny , Kira Yarmysh, said on Friday that Navalny's mother was given an ultimatum by a Russian investigator: either agree to a secret funeral without a public farewell, or Navalny would be buried at the penal colony where he was imprisoned.

"An hour ago, an investigator called Alexey’s mother and gave her an ultimatum. Either she agrees to a secret funeral without a public farewell within 3 hours, or Alexey will be buried in a colony. She refused to negotiate with the Investigative Committee because they do not have the authority to decide how and where she should bury her son," Yarmysh said in a statement released Friday.

"She demands compliance with the law, which obliges investigators to hand over the body within two days from the moment the cause of death is established. According to the medical documents she signed, these two days expire tomorrow. She insists that the authorities allow the funeral and memorial service to be held in accordance with customs," Yarmysh added.

The alleged ultimatum is "hell on earth before our eyes," the head of investigations at Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation, Maria Pevchikh, said Friday.
