Heesen Unveils its Biggest Ever Steel Superyacht: Sparta

The 220-foot ship comes with a matching custom limo tender.

Heesen has revealed first-look images of its biggest-ever steel superyacht : Sparta. Spanning 220 feet, the mammoth vessel is currently completing her final commissioning phases before she makes her way to the North Sea for rigorous trials.

The gleaming new ship – which has a maximum speed of 16 knots – features a classic “Snow-White” livery strikingly contrasted with accents of metallic red and gray.

If she looks familiar it’s probably because the design is inspired by Project Avanti – a concept unveiled by Heesen with Winch Design at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2018.

Heesen joined forces with Winch Design once again for the new project; Sparta boasts the same sleek lines and sporty profile as the Avanti concept. Other tell-tale similarities include the reverse bow, raised pilot house, and thermobonded windows from bow to stern.

Built for a private client and his family, the enormous yacht can host up to 12 guests as well as 14 crew and two members of staff. Each of the three decks – which follow a theme of earth, water or air – is accessed via the elegant oak staircase or glass elevator.

On the lower deck, Sparta boasts an expansive wellness area including an elliptical whirlpool, steam room, sauna, gym and even a ‘beauty area’.

Up on the main aft deck lies the full-beam main saloon and open-air beach terrace. Here, the family can enter the water with ease by the transformer passerelle platform or take a dip in the 21-foot infinity pool.

Four guest suites can be found on the main deck with a moveable partition separating the forward suites to create a full-beam VIP or large playroom for the kids if needed.

Benetti’s Superyacht Calex Reviewed

It’s a long way to go from California to Italy just to build a boat. Then again, Calex , delivered last year by Benetti , is a 220-foot fully custom build—60 feet larger than its owner’s previous superyacht , which was semicustom. It’s also an example of the degree to which an experienced owner will go to ensure the comfort of those accompanying him: not just family and friends, but also crew.

While a larger yacht naturally affords more indoor and outdoor space, this California resident wanted an abundance of both, prioritizing privacy and well-being.

Arguably the best example of this is the owner’s suite, which, in combination with a dedicated alfresco area, is more like a penthouse apartment. Giorgio Cassetta and his team at Cassetta Yacht Designers, which has styled numerous Benettis, penned 1,772 square feet on the upper deck for this, from amidships forward. The owner’s suite includes the master stateroom, an office, a double bath and a walk-in closet. Since the stateroom faces sole-to-ceiling glass forward, 180 degrees of changing views welcomes the owner each morning. The alfresco lounge lets the owner relax in privacy. Accessible from the suite via two curved sliding doors, the lounge has chaises, chairs and a gas fireplace. And, the raised foredeck forward can be the owner’s touch-and-go helipad.

Unwinding in the company of friends and family was also important in commissioning the yacht, whose beach club is one of the more cleverly private places aboard Calex . Beach clubs have become bigger indoor-outdoor areas, especially through the use of fold-down platforms. They enhance the feeling of having a large lounge atop the sea, but they present a problem when owners and guests want seclusion. So with Calex , a single gull-wing door fully aft swings up to yield access. The beach club is still sizable, in part thanks to the yacht’s 35-foot beam. Guests can watch sports on the TV, enjoy drinks from the bar and use the hammam. To take a dip, they can step out onto the swim platform and use the flip-down swim ladder. Boarding water toys is just as simple from the platform.

And boy, does Calex have toys—especially ones that will help guests burn calories. Stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, water skis, electric surfboards, electric foiling boards, a wakeboard and a surfboard are all available. Friends and family craving a little more speed can step aboard two personal watercraft capable of 65 mph. If the toys aren’t enough exercise, gym equipment and a yoga space are on the sun deck, with a nearby hot tub for a post-workout muscle soak.

All of the time and attention put into creating these areas would be for naught if the crew had subpar quarters. Time and time again, well-planned crew’s quarters contribute to stronger staff retention and a better yacht-ownership experience. Sixteen hands, led by Capt. Eddie Cooney, handle operations aboard Calex . While no one will blink to learn that Cooney’s cabin is on the bridge deck, near the wheelhouse and the ship’s office, they’ll definitely do a double take to see its design, along with that of the quarters for the rest of the crew belowdecks.

According to the Benetti Style Department, the owner had a singular focus for their area from the start of planning. The furnishings and decorative materials are similar to those in the two main-deck VIP staterooms and four guest staterooms (two doubles and two convertible twins) on the lower deck. Finally, and wisely, dumbwaiters connect the main-deck galley to the upper decks’ lounging spaces inside and out.

Calex also features sculptures and art pieces the owner has picked up amid his travels. The yacht casts a comforting spell, inviting guests to be as social as they wish throughout the five enclosed decks, as well as outside on the terrace-like areas and fully open sun deck. Movable deck furnishings make it easy to go from big, garrulous groups to cozier conversations. Simultaneously, Calex caters to more secluded downtime, especially for its owner. Ultimately, Calex is built for different needs, including those of the crew.

It’s a long way to go from California to Italy to get all of this. But, especially for this owner, it was worth it.  

Well(ness) Wishes

As much as the owner set aside space for health and wellness, he wanted the interior ambience of Calex to convey a sense of well-being too. Ivory-toned furnishings and warm woods, such as maple and American walnut, create a serene atmosphere, along with a dose of sophistication. The decor is by the Benetti Style Department and the owner’s team.

Engine Emissions

Calex is Benetti’s first fully custom yacht in this size range to comply with Tier III regulations. Tier III is an International Maritime Organization standard that reduces nitrous-oxide emissions by about 70 percent compared with prior regulations. Calex has a scrubbing system for exhaust gas from the main engines and gensets.

Charter Calex

Calex is part of the Northrop & Johnson charter fleet. The yacht is heading for the Caribbean this winter and the Mediterranean next year. A glass elevator and space-planning make the five enclosed decks accessible for wheelchairs. The weekly base rate starts at $680,000.

With prices starting at €9.5m, backers of what will be the world’s largest superyacht are offering 39 apartments for sale as they bet on resilient demand for exclusive luxury travel.

The 220-metre vessel is due to launch in 2024 and will provide buyers with “the intimacy of a private yacht alongside the chance to network in a vibrant community of like-minded owners”, its investors said as they announced the €500m project on Monday.

Somnio will be more than 40 metres longer than the current record holder Azzam, owned by the Abu Dhabi royal family. The project has been spearheaded by Carl Le Souef, a US-based Australian millionaire who founded Private Formula International, a skincare company, and now runs Somnio Global, a sustainable technology group.

Cruise liners and residential ships were forced into a total shutdown in March 2020 after onboard coronavirus outbreaks prompted port officials to ban vessels from docking or quarantine them offshore.

Protracted negotiations with governments over a restart, particularly in the US where health authorities have set rigorous requirements for cruise companies to resume operations, has meant ships have only recently begun to sail international itineraries.

Carnival, the world’s largest cruise ship operator, said last week that just over half its fleet capacity was confirmed to sail by the end of its financial year in November as it reported a net loss of $2bn for the three months until the end of May.

Residential vessels have been a feature of the cruise market since 2002 when the Norwegian shipping magnate Knut Kloster launched ResidenSea, the first company to build a liner where people owned apartments on board as they might a holiday rental.

Tony Peisley, an independent cruise industry analyst, said that although ResidenSea originally intended to build 10 ships, only The World was finished. In 2003, the company had to be refinanced with its apartment owners clubbing together to provide funding to ensure its survival. The vessel has 165 apartments, with penthouses selling for about €20m.

“The business model carries high capital and operational costs and other failed start-ups all found that it was tough to find enough buyers willing to pay the millions required up front,” Peisley said, adding that many of the super-rich preferred to own their own yachts.

Construction has already started on Somnio, with revenues from off-plan sales helping finance the rest of the build.

According to BOAT International, the specialist superyacht media company, sales of private yachts hit an all-time high in May with 68 boats sold after steady growth throughout the pandemic as wealthy consumers hunted out ways to travel in spite of Covid-19 restrictions.

Apartments on board Somnio will cost upwards of €9.5m, with owners collectively deciding on an annual itinerary. The yacht will have a 10,000-bottle capacity wine cellar and a beach club, as well as host talks by scientists using onboard equipment to study marine environments.

220-Foot Shadow Marine Expedition Mothership Sold By United Broker Christopher Cooke

Sometimes selling a yacht can be tricky. The bigger, more complex yachts require much more effort to find the right buyer for the situation. Originally built by Bender Shipbuilding and designed by Lay, Pitman, & Associates in 1982, Global is one of the largest boats ever to be built in the United States and the largest yacht sold so far in 2020. GLOBAL was recently listed on the yacht charter market going for $120,000 per week in the Caribbean.

"We are really excited for the new owners of Global," said Christopher Cooke after the delivery was completed. "This is a true sport utility vessel capable of very long distance voyages on any ocean and we simply had to find the right buyers that were willing to take on the complexities, and rewards, of owning a yacht like this."

GLOBAL consists of 5 decks, each carefully laid out for practicality, utility, and most of all, comfort. There are four upper levels dedicated to lounging and entertaining, while guests on board can choose from 6 luxurious staterooms with private balconies. Other key features include a swimming pool, helipad. davit, and a high-capacity crane for large tenders.

In true superyacht fashion, GLOBAL also consists of many of the amenities you would expect on a 67-meter luxury yacht. Some of these features include a fully-equipped exercise facility, a movie theater with the latest in automated audio/visual technology, an additional theatre on the lower deck consisting of a 65" television, and a wonderful dining area that allows you to watch the helicopter take off. The combination of versatility, utility, and modern luxuries are truly unique aboard this expedition vessel.

The main deck on GLOBAL is the center of activity on this superyacht. It features a large swim platform, large aft deck area, galley, crew mess quarters, a game room, theater/library, gym, and a sauna. The hangar is not just a place to keep the helicopter, but actually a climate-controlled (20-ton AC system) 48 ft. x 35 ft. x 19 ft. safe-haven for all of the toys on board that have become essential for entertaining guests. The game room is particularly popular as it includes an eight-seat poker table.

GLOBAL's Heli-deck measures 50 ft. x 34 ft. and is much more than a landing pad. It includes an industrial grade fire suppression system, tie-downs and folding safety railings. All evidence of GLOBAL's versatility, the space doubles as a banquette area for large parties when not occupied by a helicopter.

The salon on GLOBAL is truly an image of sophistication and distinction. Large windows line the sides allowing for incredible views while relaxing in one of many couches of loveseats. A formal dining table seats 12 guests in front of a large flatscreen television.

All six luxurious staterooms on GLOBAL's Guest Deck feature a full head and a private balcony. Five of the staterooms have queen-sized berths with the sixth a perfect layout for children thanks to a bunk bed. Setting the graceful ambiance that helps define the GLOBAL Class, Guest Deck furniture, casework, overhead soffits and accent wall panels are "Obeche Veneer" from a Chinese Poplar known as "Koffee Fineline." "Indian Ebony" is used in the elevator, the stairway entry to the Sky Lounge from the guest deck and the Sky Lounge powder room. All solid wood components are Mahogany.

Heesen is having a heroic 2019. The Dutch shipyard currently has 13 yachts under construction, and it just announced the sale of a 220-foot steel superyacht called Project Sparta . (That’s the third sale by the yard this year, if you’re counting.)

The vessel, which sports an exterior and interior penned by UK-based studio Winch Design , was first presented at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2018 as Project Avanti. Her dynamic architecture piqued the interest of a prospective buyer—a superyacht connoisseur and experienced seafarer—who seized the opportunity and appointed Arcon Yachts to manage construction for delivery in 2023.

Boasting a new-look sporty profile, Project Sparta—also known as YN 20067—is characterized by a cascading aft deck that serves to connect the statement bow and the inviting transom. The “fast displacement” hull form was devised by Van Oossanen Naval Architects and allows the cruiser to cut through the seas at a top speed of 16 knots. The yacht will have a maximum range of 4,500 nautical miles when sailing at a leisurely 12 knots.

Onboard, the off-center spiral staircase with glass elevator links all three decks. The lower deck features a walk-in wellness area with jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and gym, as well as the crew quarters where there’s space for 15 staff plus a nanny. The main deck houses an expansive full-beam salon—unusual on a vessel of this size—and four guest suites. There’s room for 12 guests in total, but the entire bridge deck has been dedicated to the owner. (We like your style.) When it comes time for a bit of fun, there’s a generous sundeck with bar, sun pads and a 16-foot infinity pool, as well as tenders and water toys that are stored in the forward garage.
