Replacing a Sailboat Headstay

Keep the rig up. These four words mean everything to a sailor. Over Lyra ’s winter layup, I spent many hours working on her rig to ensure that we do just that. A big part of that came in the form of replacing the forestay, as well as a comprehensive overhaul and inspection of the ProFurl furling system.

Lyra is our 1980 Reliance 44, and has a nine-year circumnavigation and several trans-Atlantic crossings under her belt. Additionally, we’ve been racking up an average of 2,000 nautical miles annually for the past 10 years on a rig that was last seriously serviced in the early 1990s while the boat was in New Zealand. It is a testament to her overbuilt design and uncompromising owners that it has held up well. With the rig out for the first time since we put the boat together after purchasing her 10 years ago, I wanted to address any issues before they occurred.

The furler’s aluminum-foil extrusion had to be removed from the headstay in order to inspect the actual wire; and in order to remove it, the ­Sta-Lok fitting on the bottom of the stay needed to be disassembled. Even though the existing stay passed a visual inspection perfectly, it proved to be a relatively simple and inexpensive process to simply replace the wire for future peace of mind.

Headstay and Foil Removal

Removing the furling assembly and turnbuckle allowed me to see the Sta-Lok terminator on the bottom of the stay. The two tangs on the outside of the fittings slid down after removing the two Allen bolts in the bottom of the titanium furler base (photo 1) . Now the turnbuckle could be spun off.

I next removed the two large Allen set screws that keep the drum assembly attached to the foil and slid it off as well (photo 2) .

Using two wrenches to take apart the Sta-Lok fitting, the lower terminator could now be removed. I had to use some heat in the form of a propane torch to break the Loctite in the threads, which was fine because all of the parts that will be reused needed to be cleaned before reassembly.

The foils were now ready to be disassembled. Four Allen set screws kept each connector insert in place inside the foil (photo 3) . Mine were sealed with silicone sealant, which popped right out when a sharp screw was turned into it. Once removed, the sections slid apart and off the end of the stay where I had removed the Sta-Lok. Be careful using heat to free the set screws, so as not to melt the plastic bearings that allow the foil to rotate around the wire. I had to drill out a few.

Replacing the Headstay

With some attention to detail and the following items, I found that replacing the wire using the existing Sta-Lok ­fittings was well within the skill set of the average DIY sailor. The tools needed are a tape measure, hacksaw, masking tape, drill, Scotch Brite pad, wire coat hanger, a couple of wrenches, Loctite, silicone sealant, and new cones for the Sta-Lok fitting.

I sourced 54 feet of 10 mm high-end Loos wire rope from RigPro in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. With the replacement set screws for the foil, the bill came to $545.46. I was fortunate enough to have a spare Sta-Lok terminal, which I installed on the new wire. By anchoring the terminals in the ground with a screwdriver, I could pull the old and new wire side by side to get an accurate measurement of length (photo 4) .

I wrapped the new wire in masking tape for ease of marking and to keep the strands together as I cut them (photo 5) . The old stay was a half-inch too long, so I cut the new one a half-inch shorter. Using a sharp hacksaw blade to cut the new wire saves time; any burrs need to be filed smooth.

A wire coat hanger ­doubled around a piece of brown Scotch Brite pad and twisted back to the drill’s chuck is an easy way to clean out the inside of the old Sta-Lok fittings without damaging the threads (photo 6) .

There is an insert buried in the fitting that should be removed for inspection and replaced if it is scored. I replaced the cones that slide over the wire and are captured in the Sta-Lok fitting. I had to keep in mind that the lower terminal installation would need to wait until the wire was back on the mast and the foil was reinstalled.

I had to pre-fit the lower terminal (photo 7) . On the wire rope, I slid the top nut onto the wire. Then, I gently unlaid the outside layer of wire strands until the new cone would go in, leaving about an eighth-inch of the core strands sticking out the bottom.

Photo 8 shows the top ­terminal all gooped up and ready to thread together. The fitting was gently dry-fitted first, so the cone has moved down to its home and the outer strands are bent into place. Last, I added blue Loctite to the threads and put it together (photo 9) . Sta-Lok says not to use too much force when tightening, so I went with a very firm feel. Sealant should (and did) ooze out the top. Wipe it clean (photo 10) , and it’s all done!

Servicing the ProFurl

The ProFurl furler was in decent shape. There are bearings in the furler unit and top swivel that moved freely and had no play, so I opted to leave them as they were. There was some wear on some of the connector’s plastic bearing inserts, so I bought four sets of them and replaced as needed. The biggest job was to replace all of the original set screws with longer set screws with a post below the threads, an upgrade recommended by RigPro. The idea is that the stud would keep the connectors in place more effectively than the original friction-reliant, cupped set screws did (photo 11) .

In order to accurately drill a hole in the connector to receive the stud on the new set screws, I had to make a guide. This was done by drilling out the center of an original set screw with a bit sized to the post on the new set screws. This allowed me to screw in the guide using an Allen wrench, perfectly centering the bit without damaging the foil’s existing set screw threads. The center measurements between holes drilled by the factory are not all the same, so it was important to keep each insert in place and oriented—easily done by dry-fitting the new set screws as I drilled. Once the project was completed, the foil was ready for a cleaning and reinstallation.

Before installing the lower Sta-Lok terminal, I slid each section onto the new stay and assembled the foil after screwing in the foil connector’s set screws with some blue Loctite on the threads. A dab of silicon sealant on top of each screw completed the process. Last but not least was installing the new halyard wrap stop on the new wire (photo 12) .

The forestay is one of the most important structural items on your rig, and is subjected to big loads, constant cycling and a corrosive marine environment. Often encased inside a roller furling foil, it is difficult to inspect. While Lyra ’s headstay passed inspection, we wanted to have the peace of mind associated with new wire. Given her Sta-Lok system, the headstay replacement was not a difficult process.

The other piece of the puzzle is the furling system. In our case, we expect our roller furler to work flawlessly, and the ProFurl is robust. By replacing some of the connector bearings and adding set screws with a post inserted into the connector, it should last for many more years.

Standing Rigging (or ‘Name That Stay’)

Question: When your riggers talk about standing rigging, they often use terms I don’t recognize. Can you break it down for me?

From the Rigger: Let’s play ‘Name that Stay’…

Continuous

Forestay (1 or HS) – The forestay, or headstay, connects the mast to the front (bow) of the boat and keeps your mast from falling aft.

  • Your forestay can be full length (masthead to deck) or fractional (1/8 to 1/4 from the top of the mast to the deck).
  • Inner forestays, including staysail stays, solent stays and baby stays, connect to the mast below the main forestay and to the deck aft of the main forestay. Inner forestays allow you to hoist small inner headsails and/or provide additional stability to your rig.

Backstay (2 or BS) – The backstay runs from the mast to the back of the boat (transom) and is often adjustable to control forestay tension and the shape of the sails.

  • A backstay can be either continuous (direct from mast to transom) or it may split in the lower section (7) with “legs” that ‘V’ out to the edges of the transom.
  • Backstays often have hydraulic or manual tensioners built into them to increase forestay tension and bend the mast, which flattens your mainsail.
  • Running backstays can be removable, adjustable, and provide additional support and tuning usually on fractional rigs. They run to the outer edges of the transom and are adjusted with each tack. The windward running back is in tension and the leeward is eased so as not to interfere with the boom and sails.
  • Checkstays, useful on fractional rigs with bendy masts, are attached well below the backstay and provide aft tension to the mid panels of the mast to reduce mast bend and provide stabilization to reduce the mast from pumping.

Shrouds – Shrouds support the mast from side to side. Shrouds are either continuous or discontinuous .

Continuous rigging, common in production sailboats, means that each shroud (except the lowers) is a continuous piece of material that connects to the mast at some point, passes through the spreaders without terminating, and continues to the deck. There may be a number of continuous shrouds on your boat ( see Figure 1 ).

  • Cap shrouds (3) , sometimes called uppers, extend from masthead to the chainplates at the deck.
  • Intermediate shrouds (4) extend from mid-mast panel to deck.
  • Lower shrouds extend from below the spreader-base to the chainplates. Fore- (5) and Aft-Lowers (6) connect to the deck either forward or aft of the cap shroud.

Discontinuous rigging, common on high performance sailboats, is a series of shorter lengths that terminate in tip cups at each spreader. The diameter of the wire/rod can be reduced in the upper sections where loads are lighter, reducing overall weight. These independent sections are referred to as V# and D# ( see Figure 2 ). For example, V1 is the lowest vertical shroud that extends from the deck to the outer tip of the first spreader. D1 is the lowest diagonal shroud that extends from the deck to the mast at the base of the first spreader. The highest section that extends from the upper spreader to the mast head may be labeled either V# or D#.

A sailboat’s standing rigging is generally built from wire rope, rod, or occasionally a super-strong synthetic fibered rope such as Dyneema ® , carbon fiber, kevlar or PBO.

  • 1×19 316 grade stainless steel Wire Rope (1 group of 19 wires, very stiff with low stretch) is standard on most sailboats. Wire rope is sized/priced by its diameter which varies from boat to boat, 3/16” through 1/2″ being the most common range.
  • 1×19 Compact Strand or Dyform wire, a more expensive alternative, is used to increase strength, reduce stretch, and minimize diameter on high performance boats such as catamarans. It is also the best alternative when replacing rod with wire.
  • Rod rigging offers lower stretch, longer life expectancy, and higher breaking strength than wire. Unlike wire rope, rod is defined by its breaking strength, usually ranging from -10 to -40 (approx. 10k to 40k breaking strength), rather than diameter. So, for example, we refer to 7/16” wire (diameter) vs. -10 Rod (breaking strength).
  • Composite Rigging is a popular option for racing boats. It offers comparable breaking strengths to wire and rod with a significant reduction in weight and often lower stretch.

Structural Furling Forestays

Continuous line furlers, together with a torsional cable, is an alternative furling system for the main structural forestay. This is an increasingly popular, lightweight choice for both racing and cruising sailors.

What is a “Structural Furling Forestay”?

The main forestay on a sailing yacht is a crucial part of its “standing rigging”. It is a permanent installation, normally with a fixed length, and an essential element for maintaining the correct rig tension and tune.

Traditionally, we have accepted the forestay as a “given” and then a dded appropriate sail handling systems to it, depending on your sailing style.

.....and cruisers add aluminium foils and furling drums onto the fixed stay to allow genoa furling and reefing.

A structural furling forestay is different in as much as the  forestay itself is an integral part of the furling system. Instead of being attached directly to the mast tang and deck chainplate, the forestay attaches to the furling drum at deck level and a swivel sits between the stay and the mast tang and the headsail furls directly around the revolving forestay. Both Drum and swivel are therefore permanent, structural elements in the system and take the full rig load.

Old style furler / foil systems have evolved to fit on / around the existing wire forestay. However, continuous line furlers were developed for independent code zero and asymmetric furling systems where the drum, swivel, cable and sail all form part of an integrated system.

Continuous line furler manufacturers have now evolved their product ranges to take in this new, niche, structural furling forestay application to offer some significant benefits.

2. Offshore sailplan

o A continuous line structural furler cannot be used with the sail reefed

o This lends itself to offshore sailplans with a smaller jib / yankee plus staysail

o This has been a popular choice for offshore sailors for generations and increasingly offshore race boats

o Not a major factor for most cruising sailors but removal of the aluminium foil can reduce windage by approx…. 70%

4. Maintenance

o Have you looked at the parts list for a conventional furler and foil!?

o There are tens if not hundreds of individual parts, screws, connectors etc

o Conversely with a structural furling forestay – there is one drum, one cable and one swivel – with simple interfaces,  which provides a basic, effective and low maintenance system.

o The cable also has a soft, abrasion resistant outer cover which is kinder to your sail.

Disadvantages

1. All-in OR All-out

o A continuous line structural furler cannot be used to reef the sail, t herefore it does not lend itself to a boat with a large 150% genoa

o A decision to switch to a structural furling system has to be taken in conjunction with possible changes to your headsail wardrobe

2. Bearing the load

o The drum and upper swivel take the full tensile load of the forestay which holds the mast up.

o Whilst the bearings are designed to take these loads they need regular maintenance to ensure long term trouble free operation

3. Composite forestay

o A new concept for many cruising sailors who may be concerned that one cable has two functions: to hold the full structural rig load and act as a torsional cable

o But these cables are designed for the purpose, have higher safety factors than wire and come with a significant weight advantage

For an offshore racing or cruising boat with the right sail plan, a structural furling forestay offers a lightweight, simple, reliable, maintenance free solution. Reducing rig weight aloft has a significant impact in reducing overall rig loads which in turn reduces ware and fatigue on the mast, rigging and fittings to provide lighter, faster and safer sailing – which is a win-win.

Charter Yacht M5 Receives Largest Ever Composite Forestay During Refit

The 18-month refit on the 75.2m sailing yacht M5 continues at Pendennis and breaks another record as Carbo-link unwrapped the largest composite forestay ever built.

The new forestay took weeks of work and one day of curing with electricity and is built with the same cutting-edge fibre-optic technology used on America’s Cup yachts.

This is the first time a superyacht has been fitted with a solid carbon cable with unidirectional fibre and a fibre Bragg grating (FBG). These optical fibres reflect the loads through certain wavelengths. Data of all the tension and loads on the rig at any given time can then be visually monitored via computers.

Sensors are also wrapped around the forestays. Once the forestay is finished and the carbon foils and furler motors are fitted, access between the two will be very limited making it nearly impossible to detect chafing between the stay and the furler. This is where the surface damage sensors come into effect. If there is chafing, they will stop reflecting and trigger an alarm.

The build of the new forestay is part of the substantial 18-month refit and 3 metre stern extension that charter yacht M5 is currently undergoing at the Pendennis Shipyard.

Built in 2004, M5 is a Vosper Thornycroft charter yacht designed by Ron Holland Design . She is Det Norske Veritas and Germanischer Lloyd classed as well as being MCA compliant.

Her interior holds accommodation for up to 12 charter guests in six staterooms - a master suite, three double staterooms and two twin's with Pullmans berths - and her crew of 14 is led by Australian Captain David  'Rocka' Romke.

She has twin 1080hp MTU engines on board that give her a cruising speed of 10 knots, a top speed of 13 knots and a range of 3455 miles at 11 knots when under power.

WHAT’S NEW?

The MkII version of Furlex Electric, launched 2018, is a compact and weather proof aid to handle your foresail and smart enough to under­stand how much power to use. It works fast or slow at your command, it consumes a minimum of your power supply and it’s built to last. Lean back and let Furlex Electric do the hard work.

Furlex Electric is designed around a highly efficient 42V electric motor. A DC/DC converter (PSU, Power Supply Unit) converts the boat’s 12V or 24V to 42V which allows for thin cables to the motor unit, easy installation and a compact unit design. Power is transmitted to a self-locking worm gear to rotate the luff extrusion at a max torque of 60Nm (204E), 90Nm (304E) and 135Nm (404E). These high torque levels mean that you can always rely on being able to furl your foresail – even when the wind and sea are doing their worst.

The motor uses only 10-25 amps at normal load and it takes 25-30 seconds to furl a genoa. When sailing with a partly reefed genoa, the worm drive provides a mech-anical lock. In order to prevent accidental overloading, the system comes with a built-in current limiter adapted to the type of Furlex, 204E, 304E and 404E. If you attempt to furl the sail without first releasing the sheet, the torque is immediately limited to a safe level. This safety feature is automatically re-set a few seconds after the control switch is released.

In the event of power failure, the sail is simple to furl manually. An emergency line-driver system is included as standard and can be used for both on-deck and through-deck installations. An emergency handle with ½” socket is available as an option.

Press one button and you will run the sail, in or out, at low speed. To double the speed, press the other button simultaneously.

Furlex Electric is available for either on-deck or through-deck installations. The main advantage of a through-deck installation is better sailing performance as a result of a longer luff length. More space on the foredeck is an added bonus!

UPGRADE YOUR MANUAL FURLEX

Push-button performance is an easy upgrade for anyone who already has a manual Furlex 200S, 300S or 400S series (production year 1997-2015) or the current models 204S, 304S or 404S on their yacht. The furling line, drum and the line guard assembly are simply replaced with a Furlex electric motor unit. No sail conversion is required as the luff length of your existing sail is unaffected.

FURLEX TD

MAXIMISE YOUR BOAT’S POTENTIAL AND LET THE FURLEX SYSTEM WORK WITHOUT BEING SEEN.

Tacking the sail at deck level allows for a longer luff length of your foresail. You will improve sailing performance without compromising the convenience of the jib furling system. The bow will also be less cluttered as the line drum is hidden below the deck.

The free turn of the tack swivel is the same as in all other Furlex models; a necessity to reduce the furling resistance and to flatten out a reefed genoa.

The MkII version of Furlex TD (Through Deck) has all the benefits developed for the standard 4th generation Furlex, such as, smooth furling with roller bearings combined with stainless ball bearings for the drum and an optional rigging screw to adjust the forestay length. In addition, the outside diameter of the line drum is smaller than on earlier TD models which simplifies installation in narrow anchor boxes and allows for installation further forward.

SAILING FROM THE COCKPIT AT THE PRESS OF A BUTTON

A hydraulic powered Furlex system enables you to reef, furl and trim the sail area to suit the wind conditions at the touch of a button. The patented, built-in motor has a direct drive to the worm gear, to keep moving parts to a minimum and increase power, efficiency and reliability. The worm gear, which is self-braking, locks the sail in the required position. In an emergency, the foresail can also be manually furled and unfurled with an ordinary winch handle.

The Furlex Hydraulic is designed to provide a harmonious visual interplay of stainless steel and aluminium. The hydraulic motor is located inside the worm gear and the positioning of the motor contributes to the compact design of the Furlex Hydraulic.

A Furlex Hydraulic is typically combined with a hydraulic driven furing mast. The complete system includes a hydraulic pump, valve units and drive units, all connected by hydraulic hosing.

The system is operated from the cockpit by control switches connected to the system through a control box.

Glossary of basic terms

Before we dive into how sails propel a boat, the different types of sails, and how to trim them for different courses, let's take a look at the basic terminology. Even if you're new to sailing, knowing the names of the different parts of the boat is essential as it helps you communicate with the crew, react quickly when needed and, of course, it is the sign of a competent sailor

Jib and genoa — the most important sail on a yacht. They are usually triangular in shape, with a curved edge at the bottom (called the luff) and are located at the front of the boat, seen from the bow. The jib or genoa can be rolled up while sailing using a furler, which is a device that allows it to be neatly stored along the forestay. The forestay is a steel cable that runs from the bow of the boat to the top of the mast.

Mainsail — a triangular-shaped sail that is commonly attached to the mast and boom of a yacht. It slides into a groove on the mast or drops into a lazy jack system for easy handling. On seagoing boats, the mainsail is not the primary source of propulsion, but it plays a crucial role in balancing the boat's direction along with foresails (jib/genoa) and the rudder.

Elements of the mainsail:

  • Forestay (luff) — the edge of the sail that slides into the groove of the mast
  • Lower luff — the sail hem that slides into the jib groove
  • Back hem (luff) — the free, third edge of the sail triangle
  • Spigot — a piece of fibre glued at one end to the sail surface to indicate the correct sail setting
  • Cunningham — a mechanism that adjusts the tension of the forestay
  • Reef — a system of controls and adjustments that allows the sail area to be reduced in high winds
  • Vang/Kicker — a pulley system between the boom and the mast that controls sail tension and boom height

Spinnaker and gennaker — types of sails commonly referred to as "balloons" by sailors due to their distinctive shape. These sails are designed for sailing in crosswinds to tailwinds. The spinnaker or gennaker is hoisted at the top of the mast, and the lower corners of the sail are controlled by lines called sheets.

Roller furling system — a furling device that makes it easy and quick to furl a jib or genoa along the forestay.

What drives a boat: a little theory

The sail on a boat is the key element that harnesses the wind's energy to propel the vessel. Made from durable materials like dacron or kevlar, sails are both delicate and strong. The basic principle is straightforward — when the wind blows against the sail, it creates a force that pushes the boat forward. The curved shape of the sail generates buoyancy, and the difference in airflow speed on each side of the sail creates a pressure imbalance, resulting in a forward-driving force. In essence, the sail acts as the engine of the boat, utilizing the power of the wind to move it through the water.

The sails are designed to be adjustable and adaptable to different wind directions and forces . Sail trimming involves making adjustments to sail tension, sail angle to the wind, and sail deflection, which play a crucial role in maximizing sail performance and optimizing the direction you sail.

Another important element in sail performance is the  distribution of forces . The mainsail is securely attached to the boat using the mast, boom, ropes, and eyelets. Additional sails are connected to the hull through ropes or halyards, which are metal ropes connecting the hull to the mast. These elements effectively distribute the force generated by the wind to various points on the boat, including the mast, deck, and hull. This distribution minimizes excessive strain on different parts of the boat, ensuring stable and safe movement.

The sail also responds to changes in wind strength and the boat's heel. If the wind strength alters, the sail can be adjusted by tightening or loosening it accordingly. Similarly, if the boat's pitch changes, the sail can be balanced or adjusted to maintain stability and equilibrium .

Sails are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, each designed for different types of sailing and varying conditions. Mainsails, gennakers, spinnakers, jibs, and other types of sails offer specific characteristics and are suitable for specific uses. In essence, a sail on a boat functions like a wing, utilizing the power of the wind to propel the vessel forward. Proper sail trim is essential for ensuring efficient and safe boating, taking into account not only the wind's strength but also the course being sailed.

Apparent vs. true wind

Understanding the distinction between apparent and true wind is very important for sail trim. This is a fundamental concept in the world of sailing  and relates to how we perceive the wind's force in relation to the vessel's movement. Apparent wind varies based on the vessel's motion, whereas true wind represents the actual wind force independent of the vessel's movement.

True wind refers to the wind force we experience when stationary on land, unaffected by the vessel's motion. For instance, if you're standing on the shore and feel a southward wind blowing at 10 knots, that is the true wind.

On the other hand, apparent wind is the wind force perceived on a moving vessel. The motion of the yacht relative to the real wind creates the apparent wind, which combines the actual wind with the boat's movement. Consequently, the apparent wind's direction and speed differ from the true wind.

When a sailboat sails into the wind, the apparent wind comes from the opposite direction of the real wind. It is a combination of the actual wind and the sailboat's motion. Conversely, when sailing downwind, the apparent wind aligns with the real wind's direction, although its speed may vary depending on the sailboat's velocity.

Apparent wind is an important factor in sail trim and navigation. Sailors must take apparent wind into account when adjusting sails and determining the optimal direction and angle for sailing. Understanding the distinction between apparent and real wind is essential for precise sail trim and effective navigation at sea. Generally, for upwind sailing, the angle should be smaller (around 45 degrees), while for downwind sailing, a larger angle (around 90 degrees) is preferred. Experiment with different angles when sailing in varying wind directions and adjust as necessary.

Sail deflection

Sails should have some deflection to help them maintain shape and generate lift. The appropriate amount of deflection depends on the type of sail and the sailing conditions. Aim for sufficient deflection to achieve optimal buoyancy, but avoid excessive deflection that may disrupt airflow and lead to inefficient sailing. Many modern sails feature adjustable features for controlling deflection.

Sail symmetry

It is important to ensure that the sails are properly balanced and symmetrical. Incorrectly adjusted sails can result in unwanted changes in sailing direction. Regularly check that the sails are set symmetrically and that the gap between them allows for optimum airflow.

Sail trimming is a dynamic process that requires constant observation of wind changes and yacht performance. Stay attentive and be ready to adjust the sail trim as needed. Even small adjustments can significantly impact the yacht's performance. Regular practice and sailing in different conditions will help you develop your sail trimming skills and gain experience.

Installing inner forestay offers sailplan flexiblity

To the editor: Most sailors fitting out a production sailboat for offshore work agree that an inner forestay is a must. But the agreement pretty well stops there. Some like a stay for a Solent jib, starting from near the masthead and coming to the deck about 1/3 of J behind the forestay, because it doesn’t require running backstays. Others favor the slutter rig from about 3/4 of the mast height to a point ondeck close to the bow. A third (smaller) group has boats with a babystay and no forward lowers. They can hoist a storm jib on it using the spinnaker boom topping lift and have a fully maneuverable boat in hard weather.

Finally, there are those, like me, who prefer the staysail sloop rig with the inner forestay parallel to the outer forestay because it allows the use of a yankee jib with the staysail. If the yankee is of the furling type, it allows easy reduction of the foresails area while keeping the center of effort close to the mast.

One point to consider is where to fasten the lower end of that inner forestay. In my case, the obvious place was the bulkhead separating the anchor well from the forecabin, a 3/4-inch plywood panel well tabbed to the hull and deck. I installed a bent Schaefer chainplate, bolted through the bulkhead, and a backing plate. The upper attachment point was defined strictly by eye: attaching a light line to the chainplate and passing it through a loop of the spinnaker halyard that circled the mast above the crosstrees. Raising the halyard progressively allowed me to see when the line was parallel to the forestay.

The hounds piece was a gift from my rigger. It came out of his scrap pile. It isn’t quite the ideal fitting, as it does not include the attachment of the running backstays. But since the mast of my Columbia 8.7 is over-strong it is exactly the same extrusion used for the Bristol 32 I simply bolted the tangs for the runners through the mast. Two more bent chainplates were fastened to the boat’s transom to get the widest possible spread to the runners, made of 3/16-inch, vinyl-covered lifeline wire (to minimize the chafe on the mainsail) and tensioned by 4-to-1 tackles.

The next question was how to tension the forestay; the ABI forestay release was too expensive and the Johnson shroud lever did not give infinite adjustment possibilities.

The Dutch marine shops have always had sliphooks that fit on a turnbuckle and would combine precise adjustment with quick fitting and release. So I faxed my old chandlers in Belgium and asked if they could supply me with one. They said they could, but what size did I need? It comes in 6- to 12-mm (1/4- to 1/2-inch) diameters. I chose the 10-mm (3/8-inch) and got it for about $16.00 (postage included).

I ordered the forestay somewhat overlong so as to be able to cut it to the right size once I fastened it to the mast and fitted a Norseman terminal on the lower end.

By sheer coincidence, the length of the inner forestay, minus the turnbuckle and slip hook, is such that it can be fastened to a U-bolt installed on the deck, just forward of a forward lower shroud, while the halyard goes to another U-bolt on the opposite side. It just takes a moment to fasten the turnbuckle to the lower end of the inner forestay and to put the sliphook through the shackle at the chainplate.

When I got the boat, it came with a furling genoa and a jib, since the first owner had only installed the furling gear two years after buying the boat. The jib, being practically unused, was recut to make it into a staysail with one band of reefs, so that use of the storm jib, which I ordered along with a trysail, would only be done in extreme weather. The reef came in handy when I got lazy and decided to put the whole nesting dinghy on the foredeck, instead of dismantling it and stowing it behind the mast. The reefed staysail just cleared the dinghy.

Just before leaving for the Atlantic triangle (to Europe and back, via the Caribbean) in 1998 after reading an article about the poor efficiency of a furled genoa when working one’s way up from Trinidad to St. Martin I happened to come across a second-hand furling yankee of about the right dimensions. It made a world of difference when beating into a solid east-northeasterly along the Windward Islands as well as when caught between a rock and a hard place sailing from Cape May to New York in a 25-knot northeasterly the hard place being the Jersey shore and the ships approaching New York harbor from the South being the rock.

With the inner forestay and the runners installed, in addition to the beefed-up standing rigging (from 7/32- to 1/4-inch), I wonder whether the mast would survive a capsize. I hope I never have the experience, and I think my chances have improved.

Offshore Log: The Reefing Staysail

One lesson we learned during our circumnavigation was the danger of the dogmatic approach to almost anything, from the choice of a boat to the selection of a rig. There are those who claim that the only suitable offshore boat is a deep, heavy, traditional boat with a long keel. Others scoff at anything so old-fashioned, and say that a modern, lightweight boat is the only way to go. 

Offshore Log: The Reefing Staysail

What we’ve found is that given careful preparation and a modicum of good luck, you can sail around the world in almost anything.

There’s one tenet of cruising dogma, however, that we have found to be so true so repeatedly that we are convinced of its validity. For safety, convenience, and performance, the only choice for the foretriangle configuration on most boats is the double-headsail rig, with a relatively small roller-furling genoa on the headstay, and a roller-furling heavy staysail on an inner forestay.

When we left Rhode Island in 1997, westbound round the world, Calypso’s foretriangle was a bit of a compromise. We had a relatively large (135%) roller-furling genoa, and a removable inner forestay with a fairly small, hank-on heavy-weather staysail. I would call this an adaptation of the coastal cruising rig, with a nod towards offshore sailing.

My thinking was that the big genoa would be useful in light air, and could be reefed for heavier air. When it started to blow hard, we would furl the headsail, and I would go forward to raise the staysail, which was kept hanked on in a bag at the inner forestay.

With the inner forestay on a release lever, I could remove the forestay to make it easier to tack the fairly large genoa when not using the staysail.

In practice, we never removed the inner forestay. On the few occasions when we tacked upwind in light air-offshore, you might go days without tacking, even when the goal was dead to windward. I merely reefed the genoa before tacking to make it easier to pass between the inner forestay and the headstay.

I dreaded going on the foredeck to set the staysail, and often put it off until far too late. Setting the sail required unzipping the storage bag, hooking on the halyard, then going back to the mast to raise the sail. By this time, mind you, it would always be blowing 30 knots or more, and headed upwind, the foredeck would be pretty wet and wild. While I was hoisting, Maryann would start to trim the sail while it thrashed about and threatened to tie its sheets in knots. No fun.

In 1998, we bit the bullet and installed a big Furlex 300S furler on the inner forestay. We have never looked back. In fact, we have seen more and more boats converting to this rig. The changeover is obviously easier if you already have an inner forestay, but this rig is so much better than anything else that it’s usually worth the trouble to install, even on a boat without an existing inner forestay.

Although commonly referred to as a cutter rig, it’s more properly called a double-headsail rig on most boats. A cutter rig implies, among other things, that you normally sail with two headsails: a jib and a staysail. In most cases, boats with a double-headsail rig use one headsail at a time: the big reefing headsail on the headstay, or the smaller staysail on the inner forestay.

Naysayers There’s a lot of prejudice against a reefing inner forestay, particularly when the staysail is used as the heavy-weather headsail. Conventional wisdom states that a heavy-weather headsail should hank onto the forestay, since it could rip out of the foil of a furler. There’s also fear about the reliability of furling systems.

This is nonsense. A properly designed and properly installed heavy staysail on a reefing inner forestay is a far safer and more efficient rig than its hank-on cousin.With a proper halyard lead and a correctly built staysail head, with a luff-tape head pendant if necessary, a headsail in a luff-groove device is as well-attached to the stay as a hanked-on sail. The luff-groove sail will also usually have a better shape due to the even tension on the luff and the lack of local distortion around hanks.

The advantages of the reefer/furler are obvious. There’s no more going onto a pitching foredeck to set the sail. The sail is under complete control as it is unrolled, so there’s less risk of damage or entanglement. Because it’s easily set, the staysail will be used more often, and more likely at the proper times. You will have a more versatile rig, since the foretriangle can be changed from full size to almost infinitely small from the safety of the cockpit, and with relatively little work.

The permanent inner forestay, when coupled with running backstays, offers dramatically greater fore and aft support for the mast, reducing the risk of rig failure.

In short, the naysayers are wrong.

The Staysail First and foremost the furling staysail is your heavy-weather headsail. The maximum size the sail should be is 5% of the height of the foretriangle squared. For a boat with a 53-foot foretriangle height—typical of a masthead 40-footer—the maximum area of the staysail would be 140 square feet.

This is actually quite large for a storm headsail on the typical 40-footer. However, it is a very good size for a heavy-weather headsail on the same boat. With a properly sized furler and properly designed staysail, the sail can be safely and efficiently reefed to a much smaller size for the really hard going, giving much more versatility than the non-reefing staysail commonly used for heavy weather.The non-reefing staysail will either be too large for storm conditions, or too small for “normal” heavy weather, which is far more common.

Offshore Log: The Reefing Staysail

The cut of the staysail will be determined by the location of your sheet leads. The sail may have to be cut fairly high at both tack and clew to clear foredeck obstacles such as a dinghy carried upside down forward of the mast.

A low-cut, high-aspect-ratio staysail will be more efficient for upwind sailing, but is less forgiving of sheet lead changes when the sail is reefed. The low-cut sail also puts much greater loads on the lead blocks due to the greater deflection angle of the sheet at the block. Generally speaking, a higher-cut staysail is less efficient, but more forgiving of trim errors. For most of us, the choice of a high-cut sail is a no-brainer, all other things being equal—which they seldom are.

In practice, most boats have a short piece of T-track for the headsail lead, and don’t change the lead as the sail is reefed. This is almost an essential compromise, as going forward to move a lead block partially defeats the purpose of this do-it-from-the-cockpit system. A short piece of track allows for variances in the cut of the staysail, and lets you tweak the lead block position at your leisure, before the sail is used in anger.

Some boats now come with a boomed staysail. Although this has some significant advantages in trimming the sail, it has the disadvantage of putting a solid swinging spar on the foredeck. If the main boom is potentially the most lethal piece of gear on a boat, a staysail club must be considered in a similar light.

A reefing staysail is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. It should be custom-made for your boat by a sailmaker with real experience in offshore sailing. This is no place for a discount sail. The sail should have the full array of controls, including leech line, foot line, and telltales. Sophisticated cuts are fine, as long as the materials and design are suited to the conditions in which the sail will be used.

Conventional wisdom says that the cut of the staysail doesn’t matter much since you won’t go upwind when it’s blowing 40 knots. In offshore cruising, nothing could be further from the truth. Along with two other boats, we were caught in a local gale just 30 miles out of Oman, on the Arabian Peninsula, at the end of an Indian Ocean crossing. It was almost dead to windward. Snugged down to two reefs and well-cut staysail, we covered the distance in five hours, beating the other two boats in by two to three hours, never tacking. Each of the other boats was forced to tack at least twice, and both ended up motorsailing to make it in. I ‘d like to say that it was our sailing ability that made the difference, but the autopilot did all the steering after I quickly discovered that it did a better job than I did. The good staysail, however, made a huge difference.

In 30,000 miles of offshore sailing, we have only reefed Calypso’s staysail a few times. In practice, we go upwind—not by choice, mind you—with full staysail and double-reefed main (a total of about 370 square feet of sail area) in winds of up to 40 knots. Beyond that, we’d just as soon not go upwind unless absolutely critical, thank you.

Despite having a separate trysail track on the mast, the trysail stays in the bag. Two deep reefs have done the job in all the conditions we have encountered, although we have sailed off the wind with no mainsail at all a few times. For offwind sailing in really heavy air—over 35 knots—a scrap of rolled-out genoa will keep the boat tracking better than a staysail by shifting the center of effort further forward.

Sizing the Furler Don’t make the mistake of choosing a furler that’s too small. Just as in winches, there’s no such thing as a furler too big. The larger the diameter of the furler drum, the easier it is to reef or furl the staysail, and the less likely you are to overload any of the components.

Don’t size the furler based on the size of the staysail. The loads on the 140-square-foot staysail of a 42-foot cruising boat will be huge compared to the loads on a similarly sized jib on a smaller boat, because the staysail will be used in much heavier weather.

Offshore Log: The Reefing Staysail

Be sure the staysail furler requires the same size luff tape as the primary headsail furler. The larger luff tape will give added security against pull-out, and will allow you the option, in case of an emergency such as the destruction of your jib, to set the staysail on the headstay as a small jib.

As a general rule, if your headstay furler is sized properly, going down one size for the staysail furler will be a reasonable choice. Aboard Calypso, we used identically rated furlers for both the genoa and the staysail. It is massive overkill on the staysail, but it gives peace of mind that far outweighs the penalty in cost, weight, and windage.

Furling Lines and Leads Some furler kits come with a furling line. With others, you provide your own line. We like to use a hard-lay, high-strength line such as a double braid with a Spectra core and a polyester jacket. Lines with a firm lay are harder to handle, but they seem less prone to being wedged into the turns of line already on the furling drum.

Chances are that the furling line will lead to your secondary cockpit winches for additional grunt power in reefing or furling in very heavy going. If that’s the case, the furling line must be sized not only to fit the furler drum, but to fit the self-tailer of the secondary winches.

If you’re going to put the furling line on a winch—and you will, at least in some circumstances—you have to be aware of the risk of damage to the rig if you try to reef or furl the sail when there’s some problem with the system, such as seized furler bearing or an hourglassed sail. We’ve seen more than one headstay and forestay pulled completely out of a boat by an adrenaline-pumped crew furiously grinding away without paying attention to what’s going on up there on the foredeck. If it’s harder than normal to reef the sail, look for a problem before applying more grunt. Needless to say, care here is even more critical if you put the furling line on a powered winch, or if you have a powered furler.

Furling lines don’t last forever. They tend to wear most at turning blocks, winch leads, rope clutches, and in the drums of self-tailing winches. Replace double-braided line whenever the cover starts to shred or chafe through.

We use heavy-duty Lewmar Superlock clutches to hold furling line loads. Because these are probably getting close to their working load limit in very heavy air, we leave the loaded furling line on the winch as a backup in these conditions.

Furling line leads can add considerable friction to the entire system, making reefing more difficult. On staysail furlers, the first lead block is usually mounted on a stanchion slightly aft of the furler drum. This will result in high side loading on the stanchion. You don’t want this lead to result in a right-angle turn for the furling line. Although it may clutter the deck more, it’s better to install the first lead block further from the furler, on the next stanchion aft.

The block should also be mounted as low on the stanchion as possible—consistent with the correct line entry angle to the furling drum—to minimize leverage on the stanchion. In extreme cases, it may be necessary to use a deck-mounted high-load turning block for the first point of deflection.

Whether deck-mounted or stanchion-mounted, the first lead block must be able to swivel.

From here aft, the angle of deflection is relatively small, and the loads on the stanchions are far less. We have used Schaefer Clear Step lead blocks on both headsail and staysail furling lines for 30,000 miles with no problems. These blocks require flushing with copious fresh water at regular intervals to keep the bearings free-running, and must be periodically examined for ultraviolet degradation of the sheaves.

With any fixed stanchion-mount blocks, it’s critical to keep the blocks properly aligned with the line to reduce friction . Changes in the heights of the blocks on the stanchions as you move aft must be gradual, with minimal vertical deflection between blocks.

Fairleads and blocks without roller bearings have no place in this application. There’s enough friction in the system already, so there’s no sense in adding to the problem. The bigger the lead block sheave, the lower the friction will be.

Running Backstays Perhaps the strongest argument against any inner forestay system is the need for running backstays. Runners can be a nuisance. As generally rigged, they require changing over from one side to the other as the boat is tacked.

Surprisingly, we’ve found the runners to be more of a problem in downwind sailing than upwind. We use the runners all the time, upwind and down, in light or heavy air, just for the additional rig support, even when the staysail is furled. That just reflects our ultra-conservative way of sailing offshore, and may not be necessary on other boats.

Upwind, the runners are necessary to minimize pumping of the rig, which at the very least reduces the efficiency of the staysail. Most cruising rigs are so overbuilt that the typical runner arrangement, with the runners tensioned by a four-part self-cleating purchase, does not really provide significant additional tension on the inner forestay. For that, you need to put the runner tail on a winch. Runner blocks must be carefully chosen for the expected load, particularly if you expect to tension the runners using a winch.

Were we rigging a new boat, we would configure the runners with a retractor line from either the flying block or the lower block to a point on deck just aft of the lower shrouds. The retractor would lead from that point aft to a clutch. Swapping over the runners would then just require a couple of easy maneuvers from the cockpit, rather than a trip on deck.

When we rigged our boat, Phil Garland of Hall Rigging convinced us to install runners of ultra-low-stretch Technora, rather than wire. The T-900 runners are far lighter than wire, and do not chafe the main on the leeward side when sailing upwind with both runners on. (Racing boats usually use runners of Kevlar or PBO “rod.” which is even lighter and lower in stretch.)

Generally speaking, a normal masthead rig with a permanent backstay is not going to fall down just because you take your time with the runners.

Conversion If you already have an existing removable inner forestay, 90% of your work is already done if you want to convert to a furling headsail. If you’re starting from scratch, the installation will be much more complex. You have to locate a suitable strong point for the lower termination of the inner forestay, and find a suitable location on the mast for the upper termination, halyard block, and running backstay tangs. You also have to determine sheet leads, and locate a suitable spot for the lead blocks. This may require local reinforcement of the deck.

Consultation with your boat’s builder, a yacht designer, or an experienced rigger may be required unless you are very comfortable with complex projects. Once these issues are resolved, the installation is much the same as a conversion from an existing non-reefing staysail setup.

Installing a reefing staysail may seem like a big job, but if you’re serious about long-range cruising, whether coastwise or around the world, this is a rig configuration that will greatly simplify your sailing in a wide variety of conditions. It’s definitely worth the trouble.

E-Motion Rudder Drive

Hanse Yachts introduces E-Motion Rudder Drive – an interesting propulsion type, with a special folding propeller….

An electric engine and a folding propeller have been installed into the rudder shaft, replacing the combination of diesel engine and sail drive. As a result, the propeller thrust is in line with the rudder position. This enables turning in the smallest circles or rotating around your own keel; it could be a perfect solution for maneuvering in narrow ports.

Making 4.5 knots with calm seas, the new Hanse 315 equipped with four lithium-ion batteries has a range of up to to 30 nautical miles – enough for all European inland waters and many coastal waters. At lower speeds, the range is significantly increased. The Rudder Drive can also be used with two batteries if a shorter range is required. The maximum speed is 6.1 knots – nearing the maximum speed of the diesel version.

The quiet Rudder Drive is also lightweight: 100 kg less than the diesel saildrive option. The Rudder Drive does not require a hole through the hull, lowering the resistance while sailing. The electric drive’s simplicity means less maintenance, as well.

For some of us, sailing has always been about the functional and fundamental. We enjoy sailing for sailing’s sake. But today people want so much more from a boat and, in many respects, today’s yachts undoubtedly offer a lot more and the Hanse 460 attempts to do just that.

What you might loosely call the mainstream European builders of family cruising yachts have been following this path for some time, making each generation of designs bigger and plusher than the last. For Hanse in particular, it has been a rapid evolution from the small, basic and functional to the large and luxurious.

This latest Hanse is the first to be designed by Berret-Racoupeau. After the earliest models, which used the moulds of discontinued, slim-hulled Scandinavian designs, every Hanse has been designed by Judel/Vrolijk in what became one of boatbuilding’s most enduring and successful partnerships.

In line with modern trends, each new wave of Hanses has been higher, wider and more voluminous than the last. Founder Michael Schmidt never lost sight of the performance side, however. For all their growing girths and towering topsides, Hanse has always made boats that sail – competitively-priced, high-volume cruisers but with easy handling (self-tacking jibs were used from the early days) and better performance than many of the alternatives.

The Hanse 460 is different. Very different. The first model from a new alliance with the French designers, it promptly won the European Yacht of the Year as the best Family Cruiser for 2022. A Hanse 510 version now follows.

The big question was whether Hanse had managed to do something different while retaining the qualities that its owners had traditionally sought.

At a glance, the Hanse 460 looks sleeker and sportier than earlier models; more angular, with a reverse rake to the bow and a pronounced knuckle running to about half-way aft. In Hanse tradition there are no hard-angled chines but, in this case, a pronounced soft chine towards the stern. In plan view you see full forward sections which, combined with the broad stern, generous freeboard and ample beam, hold the promise of enormous interior volume.

At the other end, a moulded bowsprit projects the anchor clear of the stem and provides an attachment point for an outer forestay which can carry a reaching headsail. Large windows in the topsides help to break up the high freeboard.

Scale those topsides and you’re faced with an expanse of wide, flat deck and coachroof. Moulded bulwarks edge the side decks to help keep feet where they belong should you venture forward when the boat’s heeled. Otherwise what stands out is the uncluttered appearance – lines are led aft beneath separate mouldings – and the plethora of deck hatches hinged every which way, including one that opens to reveal a large bow locker.

There was certainly nothing to complain about in the performance and handling department. We slipped along very nicely on a flat sea in 12-14 knots of wind, clocking around 7.5 knots with the apparent wind at just under 30°, and tacking through around 80° by the compass.

Enjoyable sailing

Weather helm was slight and the load on the wheels increased relatively little if I tried bearing away with the sheets pinned in, the single rudder providing plenty of grip. Provoked in the opposite direction, she coped well when pinched mercilessly and also when thrown into tight spins, only stalling briefly.

At least in the flat water and modest breeze we encountered, the cockpit worked well. In any wind and seaway you would be pleased to have the optional second table to port as a bracing point. At the helm stations you have a comfortable perch outboard of the wheel or, for energetic downwind sailing when you might need both hands, behind it. The Jefa linkage is light and direct, giving a good feel from the rudder. On the starboard side you can wind down the bifurcated backstay when extra headstay tension is needed.

Today’s cockpits are no longer just places from where you control the boat. Controlling the boat in itself is so much easier anyway, especially if – as most owners of the Hanse 460 will – you upgrade to electric winches, electric in-mast reefing and electric furling for the genoa on the outer forestay.

Other push-button options are for the hinge-down bathing platform and the cockpit tables (either side or both), which can be lowered to create large lounging areas. Alternatively there are fixed tables, as we had on the port side. A wet-bar can be added between the helm seats. It’s all part of making the cockpit a multi-function space in which every part can serve a variety of purposes. Cockpit stowage is in the form of a half-depth locker each side and – a first for Hanse – a dedicated liferaft locker right aft to starboard. With the electric-lowering option for the starboard table comes an extra moulded seat pod, which provides readily-accessible shallow stowage forward of the starboard helm and would be good to have for that reason alone.

Moving about the deck and cockpit, and from one to the other, is easy in good weather. The wide open spaces let you simply stroll around – or lounge if you’re so inclined. Then again, they tend to present more of a challenge when a boat’s bouncing and heeling.

Lifestyle choices

Externally, the hull lines clearly differentiate the 460 from her earlier stablemates, but down below it’s a world apart. It’s certainly a more classy finish than we’ve seen before from Hanse; restrained in tone and a level above what we have become used to. Berret-Racoupeau is one of relatively few yacht design studios to have its own interior-design division.

A host of interior layouts is available, from three to five cabins, up to four showers and from six to 10 berths. About the only constant is the presence of twin double cabins in the stern. Otherwise you can have different arrangements in the bow (cabins and heads) and amidships with a long or short linear galley and a bunk cabin or utility room to starboard where our boat had a chart table and heads compartment.

Details include backrests that hinge down in the saloon to provide trays and drinks-holders. You can press a button to lower the table, press another to pop up the TV from its central pod, and settle in for the evening.

Down here it’s all about sight-lines, integrating the different areas so no one feels left out, and ensuring that, as in the cockpit, every part of the layout performs multiple functions. In practice it creates a thoroughly pleasant and remarkably light environment.

Sometimes you come across a boat that makes you realise not only that yacht design has changed irrevocably, but also why it has changed and why it’s not going back. The Hanse 460 is unquestionably such a boat. How the crew lives aboard and moves around, both above and below decks, has clearly been thought about in the context of modern lifestyles. And this boat exudes style. If you like the fundamental design, you will be able to tailor many of the options and details to suit your tastes. A yacht like this is unlikely to slice to windward in heavy weather as comfortably as, say, a first-generation Swan 46, but most people aren’t really interested in that these days. I suspect the new Hanse will prove to be a pretty quick and competent all-rounder nonetheless. Simple sailing? The technology is not remotely simple any more. But with the Hanse 460, the sailing itself is simple and can still be a lot of fun.

Technology cooperation for new sailing yacht drive

Rudder Drive, the new electric propulsion system for sailing yachts developed by Torqeedo together with the large-scale boat builder Hanse Yachts and rudder manufacturer Jefa, combines outstanding maneuverability and minimal weight with a powerful emission-free motor.

The core of this innovative concept is the proven and specially adapted Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 with folding propeller, designed in to the rudder blade itself. The streamlined system replaces the combustion inboard or saildrive and removes the need for a separate thruster on the new sailing yacht Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive, which debuts at the end of October.

Outstanding maneuverability

Due to the unique rudder placement of the 4 kW (8 horsepower equivalent) Torqeedo electric motor, the motor can apply efficient, directional thrust. The Jefa rudder blade’s range of motion was extended to a total of 100 degrees. Demanding maneuvers can now be accomplished without a separate thruster. While motoring, the yacht can spin on its own axis – both forward and in reverse. While docking, the stern can easily be maneuvered into the proper position. This is highly useful in windy conditions or in narrow slips.

Power generation while sailing

With integrated Torqeedo fast chargers, the emission-free version of the Hanse 315 is fully charged in just three hours. The batteries can be recharged at the dock or during sailing when the Rudder Drive’s folding propeller is used to generate power. Torqeedo is the only manufacturer of electric boat propulsion systems offering industrial engineering, complete system integration and ISO 9001 certified serial production in Germany.

Nominee Spotlight: Hanse 510

The Berret-Racoupeau-designed Hanse 460 turned heads as a 2022 Boat of the Year nominee with a fresh take on comfort and volume but with an eye better sailing performance. The second model in the new range designed by the Berret-Racoupeau team, the Hanse 510 is set to make its US premiere at the 2023 Annapolis Sailboat Show—again as a Boat of the Year contender. From what our editors saw at the model’s recent showing in Cannes, the 510 is expected to be a formidable opponent in its category during CW ’s Boat of the Year judging.

As for dockside demeanor, this new range’s calling card appears to be a marked chine on the bow and an inverted bow to optimize sailing performance. According to the designers, attention was also paid to refining the hull shape to maximize interior space. The result is an easy-on-the-eyes 51-footer that values smooth sailing and fast, comfortable cruising.

According to the builder, the Hanse 510 offers unrivalled volume in the 50-foot class, courtesy of an optimized hull design. Chines at the bow and aft further allow for a slim waterline, ensuring prime performance and easy sailing.

The 510 is equipped with a large, practical dinghy garage, capable of holding an inflated dinghy of up to 8.8 feet; and the optional, newly developed Hanse Smart Tender System makes launching that dinghy as simple as “driving a car out of the garage.” Convenience and style dominate the interior. Even the crew cabin gets in on the volume action, as it’s much more than the typical (read: small) crew sleeping space—it is a room worthy of staying a while. The options list is lengthy, and the boat can be highly customized to meet owners’ needs.

“Expectations were high after the outstandingly successful Hanse 460, which has been awarded European Yacht of the Year,” says Hanjo Runde, CEO of HanseYachts. “The new Hanse 510 is the logical and consistent further development of the new concept. With her impressive volume, tremendously dynamic lines and countless options, she is redefining the 50-foot class. It is an easy to sail and enormously spacious private retreat.” 

The key talking points of the 510 are numerous. A hydrodynamic design with a slender waterline promotes better hull speed. Chines fore and aft allow for a wider hull and more interior space. The reverse, wave-piercing bow makes the yacht pitch less in strong winds, while the pronounced bow chines keep the foredeck as dry as possible. On deck, the strategically placed helm position promotes total control of the Hanse 510 in any situation, with all navigation and performance information easily accessible, as well as all lines and even the electric winches on the port side. An optional hardtop shades the entire cockpit including the steering positions, and it blends seamlessly with the boat’s silhouette. It is also available in several colors and accommodates special lighting and solar panels. A fixed windscreen is another option.

The novel dinghy garage is capable of holding a dinghy of up to 8.8 ft without having to deflate it. Combined with the optional automatic comfort stairs and the newly developed Hanse Smart Tender System, a single crew member can safely and comfortably deploy the dinghy, including engine, in minutes.

Another novelty on the Hanse 510 is the easy-to-open life raft storage space in the cockpit. Situated just in front of the companionway, it’s easily accessible and has space for standard 8-person life raft containers. An optional wet bar with grill and sink is hinged at the stern so as not to absorb precious cockpit space. 

The boat comes rigged with a self-tacking jib, and all lines run back to the cockpit for simple sail handling of the 710 sq. ft. mainsail and various headsails. The jib is 570 sq. ft. and the reacher measures 1,011 sq. ft., set up using a Solent-style rig on the custom bowsprit. Air draft of the deck-stepped mast is just over 77 feet above the waterline. Optional electric furling systems and winches make light work of handling halyards and sheets for the optimum in performance, short-handed sailing. The standard boat comes with a single, 80 hp saildrive, although an upgraded, optional 110 hp diesel is also available.

Within the interior, 14 well positioned opening hatches and eight opening windows and portholes permit maximum light and ventilation below deck. A long list of layout options are said to be available for the interior arrangement, from an “owner’s yacht” with a best-in-class sized master cabin, to a “charter yacht” with 10 berths, three bathrooms and an additional skipper cabin. The galley can be fully adapted to the owner’s needs as well: In addition to various refrigerator and freezer options, there is room for a wine cooler, dishwasher and a three-burner gas cooker plus an oven in the longitudinal pantry, which can be customized with a vast choice of colors and materials. Another option is a fully equipped navigation area with a forward-facing seat and a large salon table. The extensive options list, ranging from a washing machine in the utility room to flatscreens in the master cabin and salon, is crowned by the Flagship Package, which includes highest-end fabrics and materials, not to mention a “hidden” bar behind the folding backrest in the salon.

At its core, the Hanse 510 emphasizes a roomy cockpit, large but manageable sail plan, and overall performance that is easily managed by a couple, but perhaps what really sets the Hanse 510 apart from other sailboats in its class is the limitless level of customization the builder is willing to offer. The Hanse 510 also comes with a CE rating of A-12, so it is well suited for those who want to venture longer distances.

The nation’s first all-electric tug boat has docked at the Port of San Diego and expects to begin emissions-free operations in about a month.

Operated by Crowley Maritime Corporation , the 82-foot eWolf will escort ships entering and leaving the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal using electric power instead of diesel fuel, helping slash greenhouse gas emissions at the port and its neighbors in Barrio Logan and National City.

“This is a big deal,” said port chairman Frank Urtasun at a news conference Monday. “This is new technology.”

Capable of speeds of up to 12 knots, the eWolf is powered by a 6.2 megawatt-hour main propulsion battery and two electric drives. The tug has thrust — also known as bollard pull in the parlance of the shipping industry — of 76.8 short tons, which is more powerful than the diesel-powered counterparts at the port.

Constructed in Alabama, the eWolf is equipped with two small generators for emergency use that allow the boat to travel longer distances at a reduced speed.

“Like an electric car, you step on the gas and it jumps,” said Paul Manzi, vice president of Crowley Shipping, based in Jacksonville, Fla. “All of the attributes that you have with an electric motor operation in a car or in an electric truck, you see here in the (eWolf) at massive scale. And it’s extremely quiet so when it pulls away from the dock you literally won’t hear any noise.”

The tug boat’s electricity will come from a charging station that is part of a microgrid facility equipped with two energy storage containers. Battery modules in each container have storage capacity of nearly 1.5 megawatt-hours.

Interconnected with the help of San Diego Gas & Electric, the charging station at the port is designed to allow the vessel to recharge quickly and reduce peak loads on the electric grid.

Operators plan to charge the eWolf overnight so it can perform its chores during daytime hours.

“This technology has individually been around for a while, but it hasn’t necessarily been integrated and optimized to all work together — and that’s kind of our role,” said Bruce Strupp, vice president at ABB Marine & Ports , the company that designed the boat’s propulsion system. “Some of the technology is our technology, some of it’s third-party technology, but we integrate it all together.”

The electric tug boat is expected to begin commercial operations at the port in mid- to late-April, depending on the completion of the charging station.

Officials at Crowley did not release the eWolf’s price tag Monday, saying only that it cost about twice as much as a conventional diesel-powered tug boat of comparable size.

But, Manzi said, the company expects the eWolf’s maintenance and operating costs will be “dramatically lower” than what’s spent on a diesel-powered tug boat because the electric model has fewer moving parts.

The entire project — the vessel as well as the charging station — received four grants that added up to $13.67 million, with two grants of $10.9 million from the San Diego Air Pollution Control District, one grant of just over $2 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and $750,000 from the federal government’s Maritime Administration.

In 2020, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order that directed state agencies to transition off-road vehicles — including tug boats — and equipment to 100 percent zero emissions by 2035.

By replacing one of the port’s diesel-powered tugs, the eWolf is expected to eliminate the consumption of about 35,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year. In its first 10 years of use, the electric tug boat is expected to reduce about 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the port and its surrounding areas such as Barrio Logan and National City.

“We’re trying to be good neighbors and trying to be able to help to reduce emissions here to help the electrification movement,” Urtasun said, adding that the port has spent about $130 million on various electrification projects.

Last year, the Port of San Diego became the first in North America to install a pair of all-electric cranes to load and off-load heavy cargo. Each 262 feet high, the cranes replaced an older crane that ran on diesel fuel. Together, the cranes expect to help the port reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 47 metric tons per year.

That’s because I’ve been closely following the development of this wonderfully smart company’s hydrofoiling boats since I test flew a P-7 near their small and efficient shop in Stockholm in 2021. So, I’m really not surprised they just raised over $25 million to expand production of their game-changing P-12 ferry. And since yacht building powerhouse Groupe Beneteau is a key partner in the largest fundraising round Candela has ever completed it appears Candela’s brand of tech-controled hydrofoiling is about to go global.

The new investment round will help to scale up production to meet demand for the recently launched Candela P-12, the world’s first electric hydrofoil ferry. The P-12 is the first fast and long-range electric ferry on the market. Its efficient hydrofoil technology cuts lifetime emissions by 97.5% compared to diesel vessels, while simultaneously allowing operators to save up to 50% in operating costs. Since it generates minimal wake, the P-12 has been granted exemptions from speed limits, as for example on its maiden route in Stockholm, where it from July will cut travel times in half compared to road transport and legacy diesel vessels.

And it’s pretty obvious Hasselskog and company are on the right track. According to some projections the market for electric vessels is expected to be worth $14.2 Billion USD in 2030.

“We’ve spent years developing the technological maturity, and now we’re fit for scaling to commercial vessels. As in any industry, the fastest-scaling company will dominate the market,” says Hasselskog.

Other backers in the round include longtime investors EQT Ventures , Ocean Zero LLC , and Kan Dela AB. The new investment brings total funding since Candela’s inception to over $75 million.

Candela’s electric ferries multiply as the startup lines up $25M in new funding

Electric boat maker Candela is approaching cruising speed with $25 million in new funding and the first commercial deployment of its new P-12 ferry in New Zealand. The company has global ambitions for its highly efficient boats and has completed and delivered dozens of them — which is a lot in this industry!

Candela has been slowly upping the size of its vessels for years, starting with the considerably smaller C-7 and C-8 (noting the length in meters) — of which, as of this week, they have now produced a total of 70. The P-12, a ferry design that can handle up to 30 passengers, made its debut late last year .

Just last week, the P-12 was given its first assignment: ferry people around New Zealand’s Lake Manapōuri , a scenic destination but also, more importantly, the site of the country’s largest hydroelectric power station. And now staff at that station can get to work via clean-running boat rather than driving, which the companies estimate will save around 240 tons of emissions per year. It’s a start, and it will help keep the lake clean and quiet.

International interest in these boats is also evident in the participation of Groupe Beneteau, a more than century-old boating company that makes thousands of vessels yearly, in the funding round. Groupe Beneteau CEO Bruno Thivoyon expressed in the press release that investing in Candela makes sense as part of the company’s “ecological transition objectives, scaling up innovative solutions for more sustainable boating.”

Many legacy boating companies are embracing electric engines and next-generation tech; I spoke with the head of another major manufacturer, Brunswick’s Dave Foulkes, at CES about it. He said that the collaborations are fruitful because the small, growing companies need the income and reach, while the larger ones need ready-to-deploy tech. Like any other industry, you have to know when to buy and when to build, and big boating companies are happy to buy — or invest.

Candela’s boats use hydrofoils with electric engines mounted on the bottom to effectively fly above the surface of the water once they get past a certain speed, vastly reducing energy consumption — historically and understandably a sticking point for electric boating. The approach does necessitate a powerful autopilot to keep it balanced, and despite their assurances, I wonder about how they’d handle log collisions, but overall the advantages seem to outweigh the drawbacks.

I drove one over the summer in Seattle (watching closely for logs, rather common in Elliott Bay) and wished they would replace the gas-chugging fast passenger ferries with P-12s. Candela isn’t the only one pursuing this market, either; Navier is also attempting to woo coastal communities with the draw of quiet, energy-efficient transit and is currently shuttling Stripe employees around the Bay Area . And while Zin Boats has been quiet for some time, they are also nailing down markets for the next version of their vessel.

The $25 million round was led, as mentioned, by Beneteau, with participation from EQT Ventures, Ocean Zero LLC, and Kan Dela AB.

Antila 22 has a very modern design line, which resembles its elder sister Antila 24.4.

Its users comfort was the main aim to be achieved during the designing process. There is a comfortable double bunk (berth) in the bow part (zone), and the bunk under the cockpit is not smaller than in Antila 24 yacht. We also provide a functional and original kambuz with a double-burner cooker and a table top combined with a sink. On the opposite side – a sanitary cabin. In the midship area there are two sofa-beds. We wish to emphasize that the height in the mess room is 1,78m. Antila 22 is the only boat, which having the length of 22 feet, offers a full standing position for the crew members inside it. Outside there is a two-meter long cockpit with open stern where 6 to 8 persons can have a comfortable seat. The cockpit guarantees enjoying the evenings also with guests from other boats. The yacht will be equipped with a steel sliding keel and an engine fixed on a pantograph.

Our constructor Jacek Daszkiewicz has applied an innovative shape of the hull bottom to make the yacht fast. We also assume very efficient (high) initial and final stability to ensure safety of sailing.

TECHNICAL DATA

PREMIERE 2017

The world premiere of Antila 24.4 took place at sailing fairs in Düsseldorf held from 21.01.2017 till 29.01.2017. Antila 24.4 is an interesting offer mainly for private shipowners – due to its easy one-person operation servicing. Nevertheless, thanks to its spacious interior, it is also appreciated by charter companies. The interior design is not much different from that of Antila 26. There is enough space for 6 full-size bunks, a kambuz and a toilet. The charter version can have additional folding bunks. The deck has been built with a focus on safe and comfortable sailing. All ropes (lines) for sails handling have been connected to the cockpit. The yacht is equipped with full stabilization of a mast together with a gate to lay it down, a rotational keel and a rudder blade vertically lifted (hoisted). A spacious cockpit and a relatively low superstructure ensure excellent sight distance while sailing. Antila 24.4 has received a reward for the best product in its class granted by the Polish Chamber of Marine and Water Sports. In a competition Land Rover Polish Yachts organized by the monthly magazine „Sails and Land Rover” it obtained the title of the Yacht of 2018.

The new product launched in 2012 by the Antila Shipyard from Radom was the sailing yacht 26CC – a gold medal winner at the Boatshow fairs 2012 in Łódź. This yacht was also granted the (First Prize) Main Reward in the category of Charter Yacht 2012 at the Mazovian Fairs of Water Sports in Giżycko.

The boat, whose style is fairly similar to that of Antila 27, has been designed by the construction team of Adam & Michał Orych. The new design of Antila 26CC is classical and futuristic at the same time. The boat looks marvelous from each side, particularly when you look at its shape with the chine of a hull and a water-line. This yacht, as any other Antila models, focus on safety as well as high comfort provided both in a cockpit and in a mess room.

Ergonomic, spacious and very carefully planned cockpit guarantees comfort during sailing and also during mooring. Wide half decks enable freedom of moving around the deck. Slender rigging with large area (surface) of the sails as well as modern shape of the hull guarantee very good nautical parameters. The innovations applied in the mesa room allowed for dividing the interior of the boat into a kambuz, a separate toilet compartment and two independent lockable cabins with double bunks (berths). Already at a first glance the yacht makes an impression of being a symbol of comfort. Antila 26CC is a product which was created with application (usage) of the best available materials – the luxury and stylish interior, comfortable seats, well constructed mattresses with perfectly made stitching, the best quality materials with alcantry upholstery and its elements in different colours. Application of LED type lighting makes the interior well-lighted at minimal energy consumption. The floor and the cockpit boarded with Teak (Tectona grandis) wood imported from Myanmar (Burma), India and Laos add to the complete feeling of luxury and comfort. We are proud of having created a yacht which satisfies even the most demanding tastes of sailors. Our yacht is manouevrable (good-turning), fast and safe both for private shipowners and for charter companies. Antila 26CC makes it possible to taste the world.

Antila 27 designed by the recognized European designers Michał and Adam Orych is a yacht whose idea has been based on a long-term experience of our designing team. It is a modern boat which follows the latest world trends. Attractive, dynamic body of the yacht is combined with ergonomic shaping of the deck and carefully elaborated details, which reflect discreet sport type elegance and sport characteristics.

The yacht is dedicated to both charter companies and private shipowners whose special requirements have been fulfilled by optimization of production with application (usage) of the latest available materials and technological solutions. Exceptionally easy operating and servicing of the boat is an effect of using sophisticated solutions and possibility of adding more options which would increase the boat’s standards. The interior of the yacht – 1,86m high – is large and arranged in such a way that it enables even up to 10 people to stay together in the mess room. The improved transverse stability allows for increasing the sails area (surface) and sailing speed even at lighter breeze, giving also the feeling of comfort and safety in more difficult conditions. The shape of the hull has been designed to enable reaching high speeds as well as good manoeuvrability (turning) and ease of steering – all of this providing real joy of sailing. Antila 27 is also produced in a full sea version for those who like to be particularly challenged.

Antila 33 is a continuation of the successful lines of Antila 27 and Antila 26CC which are appreciated both in Poland and at foreign markets. Modern and dynamic outline with a hull length of 10,5m and the characteristic chine of the hull make this yacht to be clearly distinguished from other vessels. Spacious and ergonomic cockpit with a fixed table and a separated steersman’s station (stand) with two steering wheels, together with easy sails handling make sailing by this yacht pleasant and comfortable for its captain and his crew. Asymmetrical companion way allows for easier rigging operating and much better interior arrangement. Three lockable cabins, each with a vestibule and a fairly large wardrobe, plus full-size bunks in the mess room allow for comfortable sailing even for a quite numerous crew. Enlarged kambuz, a toilet with a shower and non-collision communication in the yacht’s interior, also in the centerboard version – are the additional advantages that were possible to be achieved by using the asymmetrical companion way. Taking the best possible advantage of the yacht’s width and its relatively high ballast coefficient (ratio) enabled for providing very good transverse stability which in relation to the slender rigging, large area (surface) of the sails and optimum hull guarantee very good nautical parameters. Antila 33 is a proposal for those sailors who appreciate luxury and modernity on inland and sea waters.

  • Zwiększona powierzchnia żagli, oraz zmiana środka ożaglowania. Grot 28,1m2  oraz Fok samochalsujacy 18,5m2 a powiększony Fok nawet  23,1m2.
  • Jacht posiada wkładkę denną. co w sposób najbardziej efektywny pozwala rozprowadzić wszelkie instalacje jachtowe: (elektryka, hydraulika, ogrzewanie i klimatyzacja).
  • Rozłożenie balastu na jachcie jest projektowane komputerowo, co pozwala idealnie wyważyć jednostkę. Zwiększony został trap jednostki.
  • Rozwiązanie kingstonu, które znane jest z naszych Antil 33, zostało teraz wprowadzone do seryjnej produkcji.
  • Część mieszkalna jest wygodna, przestronna i oświetlona światłem LED. Na burtach i suficie znajdują się dodatkowe okienka, dzięki którym część mieszkalna posiada doskonały dostęp do naturalnego oświetlenia. Wewnątrz znajdują się trzy dwuosobowe kabiny, jedna na dziobie i dwie na rufie. Dodatkowo w mesie znajdują się dwie rozkładane koje boczne, każda przeznaczona dla dwóch osób. Pod każdą koją znajduje się schowek zdolny pomieścić znaczną część bagażu, na burtach dodatkowo rozlokowane są półki, tzw. jaskółki. Ogrzewanie na jachcie zapewnia bardzo wydajne Webasto z elektronicznym sterownikiem.
  • Łazienka wyposażona została w instalację wody pitnej z pompą elektryczną i ciepłą wodę z Bojlera, umywalka z szafką, prysznic i elektryczna toaleta morska ze zbiornikiem fekalnym.
  • Kambuz wyposażony jest w instalację gazową i kuchenkę firmy Dometic z dwoma palnikami; instalację wody pitnej, zlewozmywak, ciepłą wodę. Poza standardowym wyposażeniem do dyspozycji jest duża (72l) lodówka z zamrażalnikiem.
  • Każda kabina wyposażona jest w gniazdka USB i  12V i 230V.

This Polish swing-keel boat with clever folding mast system is perfect for exploring the vast Masurian lakes

Lake sailing in Poland is very different to coastal sailing. In many ways it’s more relaxing. There are no tides to contend with and because you can find a marina or pontoon wherever you are, there’s no requirement to plan a day’s sailing. You can simply go where the wind takes you. When you’ve had enough, just beach-up or anchor in a creek.

But you need your wits about you too. Sailors have to be tuned-in to sudden wind shifts and lulls, blasts between islands that fizzle into nothing, or vice versa. Some lakes are so big you can barely see the shore, connected by canals so shallow it’s easy to run aground. Masts, keels and rudders go up and down all day – and this is where boat design gets clever. Self-charter is possible, but it certainly helps to have a local skipper… and a forgiving boat.

For our adventure with Undiscovered Sailing , our hosts Wojtek and Patrycja Tomala chose an Antila 33.3. Along with the Maxus, this is one of the most popular charter yachts on the lakes.

Antila Yachts is a Polish family-run business, producing boats from 24 to 33ft. One of the largest yachts you’ll see in the region, the Antila 33.3 has many features that make lake sailing easier. Whilst our boat Dziewiata [the 9th] Lady M didn’t come with a radio or electronics – nor even a wind indicator or compass, it did have a bow-thruster, diesel heating and a very nifty folding mast system.

The latter is essential, because the 180 miles of waterways – stretching from the lower Vistula to the Russian border (Kaliningrad) – are connected by canals and rivers with low bridges. We raised and lowered our mast at least twice a day, and it was a simple task thanks to the clever pulley system, aided by an electric winch. 

Usually the Antila 33.3 comes with a fully battened mainsail (28.1m2) and self-tacking jib (18.5m2). However, skipper Wojtek requested a larger (23m2), genoa for our trip knowing that we were keen sailors. A gennaker/ code zero is also an option.

During our five-day charter we only covered a quarter of the vast lake district. Wojtek chose the northern end of the lakes for us, which was quieter (we saw just a handful of boats) with more challenging sailing due to the many islands and narrow waterways.

Buoyage was limited, and there were protected nature reserves where engines were forbidden. Under full sail Dziewiata Lady M pointed high, sailed fast and was smooth and well balanced. Even with the larger foresail she was easy to tack and gybe.

With no instruments, we sailed by line-of-sight and trimmed the sails accordingly. Or, if we just felt like a blast, we sailed around the cormorant-inhabited islands, getting as close as we dared until Wojtek told us to tack. I especially loved the twin helms, enabling us to switch to the high side for better visibility. 

Mast lowering

To get from one lake to another, or to visit one of the many charming Masurian towns, we had to negotiate road bridges. The first job was to lower the boom to the deck by releasing the lazyjacks.

Next, one of us would go to the bow to remove the forestay pin and lift the A-frame whilst the other released the mast purchase line in the cockpit. This needed to be done smoothly and at a consistent pace, keeping two turns on the winch. The lowered mast then rested on a frame at the stern. The process took no more than 10 minutes.

Once under the bridge, we’d do the same in reverse, taking care to check no lines had got caught under the mast step as it reconnected with the deck. Wojtek continually looked in front and behind. Electric winches are great, he told us, but you need to be careful to avoid snagging as it’s too easy to damage the rig. Indeed, on the day of our arrival we saw a sorry looking ‘banana mast’ in the boatyard waiting for repair (or scrap).

When we passed a yacht raising the mast manually, I was grateful for our electric winch. A crew on the coachroof was vigorously sweating the line to help the winchman in the cockpit. It looked like hard work!

On entering the canals we turned on the engine and lifted the rudder (which can draw as little as 45cm) and keel (which reduces draft from 1.85m to 0.6m). Once raised, the keel swings into a casing that forms part of the saloon table. If you hit an underwater object, the rudder and/or keel will kick-up automatically to prevent damage. This happened whilst I was helming on the canal to Wegorzewo. I moved to the side of the canal to let a vessel past and the rudder must have caught the bank.

Antilla also makes a seagoing version of the Antila 33.3, which is CE category B as opposed to C, and has a fixed keel among other modifications. 

Skippers typically moor stern-to in Poland, and fix the bow to a trot mooring retrieved with a boat hook. This is where the Vetus bow-thruster comes in handy. Dziewiata Lady M could easily ‘stand still’ whilst we grabbed the line, or waited for a boat to pass in tight quarters. With an open side, stern and bathing platform, the Antila 33.3 is an easy boat to access from the shore or (if the weather’s nice) the water after a dip.

Accommodation 

Whilst in the Med or Caribbean you might typically charter a 38ft to 46ft yacht, we had plenty of space for the four of us on our 33-footer. Laura and I both had a double cabin at the stern and Wojtek and Patrycja shared a large, double-door cabin at the bow.

It would be tighter with six people (two in the saloon), but still comfortable with plenty of room for luggage in the lockers. Antila claims the boat can sleep up to 10 people with a maximum payload of 910kg. However, Undiscovered Sailing sensibly caps it at six.

The saloon was spacious with a large table where we spent lively evenings drinking Polish cider and playing Skip-bo. Because of the pale wood finish, 1.95m ceiling and many windows, the boat let in lots of natural light and we didn’t turn on the LED spotlights until late.

Aside from a canal boat holiday I did last Autumn, this was the first time I’ve enjoyed central heating on a charter. Though the weather was mostly pleasant, we had a few rainy days and cool evenings. The diesel-fuelled Webasto heating was a very welcome addition.

I was surprised by how little we used the Yanmar 21 HP engine to charge the batteries. We did top-up using shore-power in the marinas, but happily spent a night at anchor in a creek, and a full day either side, whilst still having plenty of power for lights, heating, fridge, bow-thruster, electric winch and head. 

Not having to power up instruments helped, and for me, this was a big plus-point of chartering in the Polish lakes. It felt like a luxury version of dinghy or day-sailing in a giant harbour. We were surrounded by forest and reed-fringed islands. We rarely knew what time it was and had the freedom to sail where we wanted, and enjoy the scenery and wildlife without double-checking instruments or trying to push the boat for extra knots.

Much as I enjoyed our blustery sails, one of my favourite moments was actually being becalmed. In the busy Solent I’d have no doubt put the engine on, but in Masuria, we simply drifted in silence, feeling the warmth of the sun as it beat through the clouds and listening to a pair of cuckoos call out across the water. When you don’t know how fast you’re going and your destination isn’t important, you stop caring and learn to enjoy the moment, and Dziewiata Lady M is certainly the boat for day-dreaming and relaxation.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
