“The way we design, is we design fully custom, fully unique yachts, we start with a blank piece of paper and we start asking the client how they use the boat, what they want to do on board, what kind of experience they have but we also want input on what kind of styling they like... It’s about getting to learn about the owner and how they want to use the boat.” - Ronno Schouten, Design Manager of De Voogt Naval Architects

Motor Yacht
Air has an exceptionally sleek and elegant exterior with modern lines, while also incorporating a distinctive Feadship flared bow. She is the first superyacht built under Annex 2 of LY2 to have a fully certified commercial helicopter pad. This requirement represented a major challenge in terms of styling, and the designers at De Voogt Naval Architects have achieved something very special indeed by ensuring that Air’s elongated aft deck remains in perfect proportion to the rest of the giant yacht. Meanwhile, her unique matt black hull has been painted with a specialised and environmentally friendly nano coating technique.
A highly sophisticated minimalistic design makes for a stunning interior. Main materials used include matt-finished sycamore, leather, matt-finished special paint, high gloss stainless steel, palladium leaf, back-lit white onyx, off-white & black limestone and a wealth of carve glass.
An undoubted highlight in terms of the luxury spaces is the owners’ observation lounge with a breathtaking vista over the eight-metre long pool on the vast main deck forward area. Great views are also assured from the magnificent sun deck, which offers many relaxation options such as a gym, lounging areas aft and forward with Jacuzzi, and a 102” pop-up television screen for outdoor movie viewing. Air carries two 9.8-metre tenders in dedicated and fully enclosed bays. There is also a large foldable swimming platform with bar from which to watch the world go by. Air is exclusively available for charter via IYR (International Yacht Register) and the Feadship charter division.

The World’s First “Air Yacht” Would Sail in the Sky and Sea (With Zero Emissions)
By Jessica Cherner
Yachts and private planes make for luxurious ways to zip from one place to another, but recently, a businessman based in Germany and Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini discovered what happens when they combine boats and jets: the ultra-sleek sky yacht. Equipped with eight counter-rotating electric engines powered by super-lightweight batteries and solar panels, the nearly 500-foot-long yacht can traverse the sky (and sea) at 60 knots for more than two days straight with zero emissions. Plus, aside from its full-electric mobility, the air yacht is sustainable in other ways too: It will be built entirely from carbon fiber, which is as high-strength as it is lightweight.
The 500-foot futuristic vessel comprises three main parts: a central compartment with a living room and dining area flanked by two inflatable helium blimps that house 10 suites.
Lazzarini’s design looks like something out of the future: a spacious living room and dining area housed within the sky yacht’s central torpedo-shaped structure that’s connected via eight carbon bridges (four on each side) to two 150-foot-long blimps. And the blimps that contain a whopping 14,125,867 cubic feet of helium that keep the vessel high in the sky, flanking the main compartment, aren’t just there to elevate the jet: Between the two, there are 10 guest suites, all of which boast 360-degree views.
The two balloon-like compartments on either side of the impressive vessel comprise an inflatable base that allows the innovative machine to float atop the water surface when the owner is in the mood to sail the sea versus the sky. Though being able to choose which medium makes the most sense for specific destinations sounds like an ideal way to travel, the sky yacht is, unfortunately, still quite a ways off from replacing typical ships and planes.
The enormous sky yacht is too big to simply park at a marina while its guests climb aboard, so it comes equipped with a retractable staircase.
For the private owner who commissioned the estimated $627,511,500 sky yacht, however, his new mode of transportation is the way of the future. In fact, Lazzarini has promised that a first-scale model prototype will lift into the air later this year, and a collection of slightly varying designs (of different lengths) is currently in the early phases of both engineering and prototyping. So, perhaps we’ll all be passengers onboard a boat that flies before the end of the decade.

World’s First “Air Yacht” Would Sail In The Sky And Sea With Zero Emissions
Luxury and innovation unite in an awe-inspiring creation that challenges the very boundaries of travel. Picture a vessel that effortlessly glides through the endless skies and the serene seas, offering a lifestyle of opulence and sustainability. The brainchild of a German businessman and the visionary Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini, the “Air Yacht” concept has shattered conventional notions of yachts and private planes. Powered by eight counter-rotating electric engines fueled by lightweight batteries and solar panels, this nearly 500-foot-long masterpiece takes to the skies while leaving behind a pristine, emission-free environment. But this is just the beginning of the story as we delve into the futuristic marvel that is set to redefine luxury travel.
The Sky Yacht Concept: A Fusion of Luxury and Eco-Friendliness
Imagine a 150-meter-long vessel connected by four bridges to two side blimps, creating an impressive width of 80 meters. These two inflatable helium blimps are subdivided into hive areas or cells, ensuring the hermetic isolation of each helium compartment. This cutting-edge design by Pierpaolo Lazzarini offers the best of both worlds: a yacht that can sail the sea and a private jet that can soar through the sky. When the owner decides to take to the sky, the release of compressed helium from tanks within the blimps elevates the air yacht. Conversely, when it’s time to sail the sea, the air yacht can float on the water thanks to the depressurization of helium and its ballast anchor system.
Eco-Friendly Propulsion: Flying and Sailing with Zero Emissions
The Air Yacht incorporates eight counter-rotating electric engines, each boasting 950 horsepower, all powered by ultra-lightweight batteries and solar panels. This propulsion system allows the air yacht to reach a maximum speed of 60 knots and continuously travel for more than two days with zero emissions. Furthermore, the entire structure is constructed from carbon fiber, a material renowned for its high strength and lightweight properties. With helium, lightweight batteries, solar panels, and carbon fiber, the Air Yacht represents a pinnacle of sustainable air travel. Read: Pioneering wind-powered cargo ship sets sail with groundbreaking giant metal ‘wings’
The Air Yacht Would Offer Luxurious Living Spaces
The central torpedo-shaped structure of the air yacht hosts a spacious living room and dining area, providing an elegant setting for relaxation and entertainment. Connecting this central compartment to the two side blimps are four carbon bridges (two on each side), ensuring structural integrity and ease of movement. Between the two blimps, passengers can find ten en-suite staterooms, five in each balloon, all offering breathtaking 360-degree views. The owner’s master cabin, located in the central part, also boasts a stunning 360-degree view. In total, the Air Yacht can accommodate up to 22 guests in 11 cabins.
Multi-Modal Travel: Sky or Sea, Your Choice
The air yacht’s inflatable bases in the two balloon-like compartments allow it to gracefully float on the water surface when the owner decides to sail instead of flying. This versatility provides an ideal way to choose the best mode of transportation for specific destinations. However, due to its enormous size, the air yacht cannot be parked at a marina. To overcome this limitation, it is equipped with a retractable staircase, allowing guests to board a smaller boat to reach the harbor.
Price and Future Prospects
The estimated cost of this extraordinary Air Yacht is a staggering $627,511,500. A German businessman, impressed by this revolutionary concept, has commissioned the construction of a first-scale model prototype, set to take flight by the end of 2022. Additionally, various designs of different lengths are in the early phases of engineering and prototyping. While the Air Yacht is not designed for public transportation or tourist purposes, it represents a significant leap forward in the world of private aviation and luxury yachts.
Sustainable Future: Sail the Sky Without Emissions
The Air Yacht offers a sustainable and eco-friendly mode of transportation, raising hopes for a future where travel leaves minimal environmental impact. Its innovative design and zero-emissions propulsion system pave the way for luxurious and environmentally conscious journeys. As Lazzarini Design Studio stated, “ With the Air Yacht, there is a way to sail the sky without emissions damaging the future .”
A Glimpse into the Future of Luxury Travel
The Air Yacht is not just a vessel; it’s a bold vision of the future of travel. Its luxury, sustainability, and versatility fusion represents a significant step forward in private aviation and yachting. While it may be a while before we all experience the thrill of sailing the sky, the Air Yacht offers a tantalizing glimpse into what may become a reality in the next decade.

Bonkers: a look at lazzarini's concept 'air yacht'.
To fly or to sail? That's the question. At least, it was. The futuristic Air Yacht allows you to fly and sail in the most luxurious way possible.
Italians are renowned for being at the forefront of design innovation . The new "Air Yacht" concept, developed by the Italian design studio Pierpaolo Lazzarini, is the latest proof of this incredible capacity. As the name suggests, the new Air Yacht is both a yacht that can sail the sea and a private jet that can fly its owner across the world. Let's have a closer look at this astonishing piece of futuristic design together.
The structure of the Sky Yacht
It might sound like sci-fiction, but it is true. Or, at least, the blueprint is already a reality. The Italian design studio Lazzarini has developed a luxurious and eco-friendly flying yacht. But what would it look like?
Imagine a 150-meter-long vessel connected by four bridges to two side blimps for a total width of 80 meters. Each of the two floating blimps would be divided into hives, or cells, acting as helium compartments. Indeed, when the private owner of the Air Yacht wants to take to the sky, all they have to do is release helium, compressed in tanks, in the two blimps.
On the other hand, when the owner is tired of seeing the world from above, they can decide to sail the sea. Indeed, in the lower part, the two balloons incorporate inflatable bases to allow the Air Yacht to float on the water. The depressurization of helium and its ballast anchor enables the Air Yacht to sail at a speed of five knots.
Four counter-rotating engines of 950 horsepower (hp) each are attached to the outer sides of the blimps. These are powered by ultra-light batteries and solar panels, allowing the Air Yacht to fly at a maximum speed of 60 knots for more than two days straight at zero emissions . Additionally, the entire structure has been designed to be built using carbon fiber, a high-strength and lightweight material.
With the use of helium, lightweight batteries, solar panels for the propulsion of the four engines, and lightweight carbon for the structure, the Air Yacht is at the forefront of sustainable air travel. In a statement, Lazzarini design studio stated:
"With the Air Yacht, there is a way to sail the sky without emissions damaging the future"
The Sky yacht's living spaces
If the external structure of the Air Yacht has the 'wow' factor, wait until you see what's inside...
The central, 80-meter-long, torpedo-shaped structure hosts a spacious living room and a dining room. Four carbon-made bridges, two on each side of the main structure, connect it to the two side blimps. Here, the owner's guests can find ten en-suite staterooms, five in each balloon. All ten suites offer breathtaking 360-degree views. The owner's master cabin, shown in the photo below, is instead located in the Air Yacht's central part, also offering a stunning 360-degree view.
Therefore, the Air Yacht can host up to 22 guests in 11 cabins. On the rooftop, guests will enjoy a swimming pool, while a helipad enables helicopters to take off and land to transfer the owner and their guests to the dry land. Indeed, the Air Yacht's dimensions prevent it from being parked at a marina. Besides the helipad, the Air Yacht also features a retractable staircase, allowing the guests to board a smaller boat to reach the harbor.
The estimated price of the Air Yacht is a whopping $627,511,500. Pierpaolo Lazzarini has promised the private owner who has commissioned the Air Yacht, a German businessman, to have a first-scale model prototype lifted in the air by the end of 2022. Additionally, a series of varying designs with different lengths is in the early phases of the engineering and prototyping process.

US mulls deploying Marine security team to Haiti amid gang crisis
Correction Friday 9:45 a.m. ET: This story was corrected on Friday to note that the fleet has not actually deployed to Haiti. The defense official said on Friday he had misunderstood their status and had been discussing what were actually contingency operations.
The United States is considering deploying an elite Marine security team to Haiti because of a deteriorating security situation there, according to a defense official.
The Marines would be deployed at the request of the State Department, according to the defense official. Marine Corps Times asked the State Department for further details Thursday and didn’t receive a response.
“Deploying a FAST platoon is one option at the DoD’s disposal should the DoS request assistance with security at the U.S. Embassy in Port Au Prince,” Maj. Mason Englehart, a spokesman for Marine Corps Forces South, wrote in an email to Marine Corps Times on Friday.
Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry is struggling to stay in power as he tries to return home, where gang attacks have shuttered his country’s main international airport and freed more than 4,000 inmates in recent days.
Henry remained in Puerto Rico as of midday Wednesday. He landed in the U.S. territory on Tuesday after he was barred from landing in the neighboring Dominican Republic, where officials closed the airspace to flights to and from Haiti.
In 2023, more than 8,400 people in Haiti were reported killed, injured or kidnapped, more than double the number reported in 2022. The U.N. estimates that nearly half of Haiti’s 11 million people need humanitarian assistance, but the 2024 humanitarian appeal for $674 million has received just $17 million — about 2.5% of what’s needed.
On Wednesday, the U.S. embassy in Haiti urged Americans in the country to depart as soon as possible and said it would be on limited operations Thursday.
“Embassy operations may be further affected during the week because of gang-related violence and its effects on transportation and infrastructure,” the embassy said in the security alert.
The Corps’ fleet antiterrorism security teams, often known as FAST, are deployed around the world for limited periods of time to reinforce or recapture U.S. assets.
FAST Marines receive specialized training on noncombatant evacuation operations, close-quarters battle, military operations in urban terrain, convoy operations, shipboard operations and specialized security operations, according to a page on the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service.
The teams are part of the Yorktown, Virginia-based Marine Corps Security Force Regiment .
In 2019, fleet antiterrorism security team Marines embarked a U.S. merchant vessel to provide security as it transited the Strait of Hormuz, located between Oman and Iran.
In 2010, after a devastating earthquake struck Haiti, they were sent to assist the Marine security guards who already had been guarding the U.S. embassy in the capital Port-au-Prince.
At a press conference Wednesday , Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, denied that the United States was considering sending U.S. forces to Haiti.
Jean-Pierre said noted that Kenya had agreed to send police officers on a security mission to Haiti.
“So, that was recently signed, and that’s going to move forward,” she said. “But there is no plan to bring U.S. forces into Haiti.”
In 2021, President Joe Biden sent Marines from the Marine Security Guard Security Augmentation Unit to the Port-Au-Prince embassy “out of an abundance of caution” following the assassination of the Haitian president but insisted sending U.S. forces to stabilize the country was “not on the agenda.”

2 commanders of the Marines’ West Coast infantry school fired
The Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base sign outside the main gate of the base in Southern California. (San Diego Union-Tribune/TNS)
WASHINGTON — The Marine Corps fired two commanders at its West Coast infantry school, the service announced Thursday.
Col. Seth MacCutcheon, commander of the School of Infantry-West, and Maj. Nicolas Engle, commander of Reconnaissance Training Company, were both relieved on March 8 by Brig. Gen. Farrell Sullivan, a Marine spokesperson said in a statement.
“[The commanding general of U.S. Marine Corps Training Command] is committed to ensuring leaders at all levels fulfill their duties to deliver the most highly qualified Marines to the operating forces safely and efficiently,” said Maj. Joshua Pena, a spokesman for Marine Corps Training Command, which oversees the school. “No additional information is available at this time.”
Under federal privacy law, military officials are not required to disclose the reasons for removing or reassigning personnel. Military officials often cite “a loss of confidence” when commanders are removed from their posts without providing any specifics that led to the decision.
Both units are based out of Camp Pendleton, Calif., but these firings follow other leaders in charge of training programs in the Marine Corps being relieved of duty.
MacCutcheon in July removed Sgt. Maj. Steven Burkett , who had been the top noncommissioned officer at the School of Infantry-West for a little more than a year.
Lt. Col. Michael Masters, who had been the executive officer at Parris Island’s Recruit Training Regiment, was removed in September after being arrested on battery and child cruelty charges in Florida.
Masters was the third high-ranking leader at Parris Island removed from his position. Col. Bradley Ward, who had commanded the recruit regiment since July 2021, and his senior enlisted leader Sgt. Maj. Fabian Casillas were fired July 5 “for a loss of trust and confidence,” the Corps said at that time.
The School of Infantry-West is one of two schools where new Marines must go for the second stage of initial military education after they finish recruit training. The School of Infantry-East is located at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Recruits from areas east of the Mississippi River are usually sent to the North Carolina school while those from west of the river attend the California school.

Surface air temperature for February 2024
February 2024 was the warmest February on record globally, with an average ERA5 surface air temperature of 13.54°C, 0.81°C above the 1991-2020 average for February and 0.12°C above the temperature of the previous warmest February, in 2016. This is the ninth month in a row that is the warmest on record for the respective month of the year. The month was 1.77°C warmer than an estimate of the February average for 1850-1900, the designated pre-industrial reference period. The global-average temperature for the past twelve months (March 2023 – February 2024) is the highest on record, at 0.68°C above the 1991-2020 average and 1.56°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average. The daily global temperature was exceptionally high during the first half of the month, reaching 2°C above the 1850-1900 levels on four consecutive days (8–11 February).
European temperatures in February 2024 were 3.30°C above the 1991-2020 average for February, with much-above average temperatures experienced in central and eastern Europe. Outside Europe, temperatures were above average over northern Siberia, central and northwest North America, the majority of South America, across Africa, and in western Australia. The El Niño continued to weaken in the equatorial Pacific, but marine air temperatures in general remained at an unusually high level.
The average global sea surface temperature (SST) for February 2024 over 60°S–60°N was 21.06°C, the highest for any month in the dataset, above the previous record of August 2023 (20.98°C) . Sea surface temperature is defined over the global extrapolar ocean, from 60°S to 60°N. This is used as a standard diagnostic for climate monitoring. The average daily SST reached a new absolute high of 21.09°C at the end of the month.
Boreal winter was the warmest globally at 0.78°C above the 1991-2020 average. European winter temperature was the second warmest on record, after the winter of 2019/2020, at 1.44°C above the 1991-2020 average.

February 2024 saw temperatures well above the 1991-2020 average across most of Europe. The largest anomalies occurred over eastern Europe, where, for example, Romania registered record highs and Lviv in western Ukraine recorded its highest February temperature of 17.8°C. In western Europe, England and Wales had their warmest February in a record dating back to 1884, and Switzerland also had its warmest February since records began in 1864. Germany experienced record-breaking temperatures too. In contrast, there were only a few areas where temperatures were colder than average. These included Iceland and western Russia; slightly below-average temperatures were recorded mostly along the border between Norway and Sweden.
Outside Europe, temperatures were much above average in northern Siberia and over the Barents Sea to the west of Novaya Zemlya which was linked to well below-average sea ice cover . Central and northwest North America experienced above-average temperatures, with the U.S. Midwest region particularly affected. On 26th February, 78 daily maximum temperature records were equalled or exceeded across the central United States ; and highest February temperatures ever were observed in Omaha, Nebraska, Des Moines, Iowa, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Above-average temperatures occurred over the majority of South America, which favoured high wildfire activity there, and across most of Africa, where the largest positive anomalies were found in the south of the continent. Australia reported its fourth-warmest February in a record dating back to 1910, and the state of Western Australia its second warmest.
Temperatures were below the 1991-2020 average over central Asia, including in the Xinjiang region of China where a record-breaking low temperature of –52.3°C was observed on 18th February 2024. The Kamchatka Peninsula in the far east of Russia also experienced below-average temperatures, as did most of Greenland, a part of northeast Australia, and pockets of northeast Africa and north - western North America.
Air temperatures were above average over large parts of the ocean, associated with the continuation of record sea-surface temperatures noted in the highlight box below , although El Niño conditions continued to weaken over the equatorial Pacific. Regions with higher-than-usual temperatures extended northward from the Antarctic to the southern Indian Ocean and parts of the southern Atlantic and Pacific Ocean basins. Air temperatures were at record levels over large areas and were generally higher than the 1991-2020 average over most of the tropics, the eastern North Atlantic and the North Pacific, to the east of Japan in particular. Temperatures were below average over several relatively small areas of the world’s oceans, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere, north of Japan, over the western North Atlantic and parts of the eastern North Pacific.

Globally, February 2024 was:
- 0.8°C warmer than the 1991-2020 average for February
- the warmest February on record, 0.12°C warmer than February 2016, the previous warmest February
- 1.77°C warmer than an estimate of the pre-industrial average for 1850-1900.
- the ninth consecutive month (since June 2023) for which the monthly temperature has been the warmest on record for the corresponding month of the year.
- a month with a temperature anomaly higher than for any month before September 2023.
- a month with the fifth-largest anomaly across all months, behind September (0.93°C), October, November, and December (all at 0.85°C) of 2023.
The daily global temperature was exceptionally high during the first half of the month, reaching 2°C above the 1850-1900 levels on four consecutive days (8–11 February). This is the second time that the 2°C mark was reached within the ERA5 dataset, the first time being on 17–18 November 2023 . The high daily global temperatures were associated with simultaneous large warm anomalies over North America and Eurasia. To visualise these daily temperature anomalies, visit our Climate Pulse web app.
European-average temperature anomalies are generally larger and more variable than global anomalies. The European-average temperature for February 2024 was 3.30°C higher than the 1991-2020 average. The month was 0.67°C colder over Europe than February 1990, and the second warmest February on record for Europe, although only an insignificant 0.01°C warmer than February 2020.
Sea surface temperature hit record highs across large parts of the ocean
As reported in our Temperature Summary for January 2024, daily global sea surface temperatures (SSTs) averaged over extra-polar waters (60°S–60°N) have reached new absolute records since 31st January, surpassing the previous record set in August 2023. SSTs were exceptionally high for the time of year through most of 2023 and the beginning of 2024. At the end of February, the daily average SST reached a new absolute high of 21.09°C. For more details, see the interactive daily SST charts in our Climate Pulse web app.
The monthly average SST for February 2024 was 21.06°C, by far the highest on record for the month, 0.59°C above the 1991–2020 average for February. This is 0.27°C higher than the previous February record, set in 2016 (20.79°C). It is also the highest absolute value for all months, surpassing the previous record from August 2023 (20.98°C).
Although the current El Niño event has been an important contributor to the high global SSTs observed over the past few months, it is currently weakening and SSTs in the equatorial Pacific are lower than in February 1998 and February 2016. However, high SSTs in ocean regions outside of the equatorial Pacific are a key factor to the current global SST records. The map of SST percentiles above shows that SSTs reached record high values in a substantial portion of the Atlantic Ocean (subtropical North and South Atlantic, equatorial Atlantic), in large fractions of the Indian Ocean, in the Southern Ocean sector south of South Africa, as well as in various parts of the Pacific Ocean.
During the boreal winter of 2023/2024, there was a striking contrast across Europe. Above-average temperatures occurred over most of the continent, with the largest anomalies over the Alps and in southeast Europe. Conversely, below-average temperatures were experienced across the Nordic countries and northwest Russia.
Seasonal-average temperatures across North America reflected the pattern seen in February, with warm conditions seen especially in the U.S. Midwest and Canada. The season as a whole was also warmer than average over much of South America, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia. In contrast, the season was colder than average in the far east of Russia, including the Kamchatka Peninsula, across pockets of central Asia, and in most of Alaska.
The seasonal-average temperatures over sea are similar to the pattern of differences from 1991-2020 as already seen for February 2024. However, the seasonal average shows the El Niño conditions more pronounced, and the regions of cold anomalies in the northern, southern, and northwestern Pacific Ocean are weaker in the seasonal average .

The global-average temperature from December 2023 to February 2024 was the highest in the record at 0.78°C above the 1991-2020 average for the season. This is 0.19°C warmer than the next warmest period from December 2015 to February 2016.
The average temperature for Europe from December 2023 to February 2024 was 1.44°C above the 1991-2020 average for the season. This is the joint second warmest winter value on record for Europe. The winter of 2019/2020 was almost 1.4°C warmer. Winter 2023/24 was within 0.03°C of 2022/23, 2015/16, and 2006/7.
Temperatures averaged over the last 12 months were:
- above the 1991-2020 average over most of the globe, including much of Europe
- below average over most of Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden
- well above average over land areas that include eastern Canada, western Asia, and parts of South America, Africa and Antarctica
- a little below average over several small areas of land, including parts of Australia, Antarctica, northwestern India, and western North America.
- well above average over some seas around Antarctica and in the European sector of the Arctic, and over much of the North Pacific, part of the South Pacific, the Atlantic and the south-western Indian Ocean
- well above average over the eastern equatorial Pacific, where there was a transition early in the period from a La Niña to the current El Niño event
- below average over a few oceanic areas, particularly over part of the south-eastern Pacific Ocean and east of Greenland

Averaging over twelve-month periods smooths out shorter-term variations in regional- and global-average temperatures. Globally, the last 12 months were warmer than any previous 12-month period, with a temperature 0.68°C above the 1991-2020 average. The next warmest such period was the period of February 2023 to January 2024 at 0.64°C above average. 2023 is the warmest calendar year on record, with a temperature 0.60°C above the 1991-2020 average.
Using an annual-mean offset of 0.88°C (see side box), the average global temperature for the 12 months to February 2024 is estimated to be 1.56°C above the 1850-1900 level. The average over the fourteen months from the beginning of 2023 is 1.51°C above the 1850-1900 level.
There is more variability in average European temperatures, but relatively dense observational coverage of the continent reduces uncertainty. The average for this latest 12-month period is 1.01°C above the 1991-2020 average. 2020 is the warmest calendar year on record for Europe, with a temperature 1.19°C above the 1991-2020 average.
Note on global values from ERA5 and other temperature datasets
There is general agreement among datasets that the period since 2015 is much warmer globally than any previous period. There is also agreement that global temperature has risen at an average rate close to 0.2°C per decade since the late 1970s. There is nevertheless still some spread between the datasets for recent years, such as for 2021 and 2022 , and the annual average temperature anomalies for these years from ERA5 are generally higher than those from the five other datasets considered. The differences range from 0.01 to 0.07°C for 2016-2022. The range is 0.00 to 0.06°C if air temperature over sea is replaced by sea-surface temperature for ERA5 and the other dataset for which sea-surface temperature was not used by design. The remaining differences depend partly on the extent to which datasets represent the relatively warm conditions that have predominated over the Arctic and Antarctic during these years. Differences elsewhere in estimates of sea-surface temperature and surface air temperature over land have been further factors.
The surface air temperature analysis homepage explains more about the production and reliability of the values presented here, but has yet to be updated to include the new information on dataset spread mentioned above.

Military landlords starting to install home EV charging stations
Thousands of military families living in privatized housing on military installations now have access to in-home charging stations for their electric vehicles, as at least four privatized housing landlords have begun rolling out programs.
Residents don’t pay for the installation of the Level 2 charging stations, which can be installed in garages and carports, where the programs are available. They do pay for the amount of time they use to charge their vehicles with these new charging stations. But otherwise, military families don’t pay for utilities currently in privatized housing, where they may have been plugging in their cars to wall outlets.
“Residents have requested Level 2 EV charging because it’s safer and faster than other charging alternatives,” said Justin Kern, executive general manager of Lendlease Communities, in a response to Military Times. “Level 2 charging can take as little as five to six hours to reach a full vehicle charge. In contrast, Level 1 charging (plugging an EV directly into a regular home electrical outlet) is potentially unsafe and can take 24 hours or longer to complete.”
According to Kern, about 7,800 homes are eligible for the chargers at the bases Lendlease has rolled out so far. In late 2023, the pilot program was launched at Soaring Heights Communities at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona; and Cavalry Family Housing at Fort Cavazos near Killeen, Texas. This year, Lendlease rolled out the program at Atlantic Marine Corps Communities at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, Havelock, North Carolina. Later this year, the charging stations will come to Hickam Communities in Honolulu serving Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam; and the Island Palm Communities serving seven installations on Oahu.
Depending on the results of these rollouts, Lendlease will consider expanding to more of its communities, Kern said.
The companies are using a national provider of EV charging services, TRO Energy Solutions to cover the cost of installation, setup and maintenance of the individual Level 2 charging stations. Residents don’t pay for those costs, which can be upwards of $1,000, depending on the area. Residents enroll in a monthly charging subscription for ongoing usage, using the ChargeTime app.
Other military landlords that have begun to provide electric charging stations at homes include:
- The Michaels Organization recently delivered its first electric charging stations to residents at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland and MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. The company plans to deliver these charging stations to all the privatized family housing it owns and manages at 11 military installations across the country, officials announced.
- Balfour Beatty Communities began their pilot program last summer offering Level 2 in-home charging stations at Naval Submarine Base New London, Connecticut; and Vandenberg Space Force Base, California.
- Hunt Military Communities launched four pilot locations with in-home charging stations late last year, including Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana; Fort Sam Houston, Texas; Joint Base Pearl-Harbor Hickam, Hawaii; and Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
Pricing for the charging options is based on regional utility costs, Kern said. Lendlease residents subscribe to one of three monthly packages for different tiers of energy usage, based on anticipated miles driven per month. Any unused kilowatt-hours or miles roll over to the next month.
The faster the charging, the higher the cost, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
According to Edmunds.com , it costs about $11 to charge an electric car with a 65 kilowatt-hour battery at home using a Level 2 charger, assuming electricity costs $0.17 per kilowatt-hour, which is the national average. The Level 2 charger can be run on a 240-volt household outlet, usually in the garage or driveway.
Department of Defense officials paused utilities billing across privatized housing a few years ago. The utilities and rent are included in the monthly allotment paid to their housing landlord, which generally equals their entire Basic Allowance for Housing. A number of residents are using their regular home electrical outlets, Level 1 charging, 120-volt wall plug-ins, for their cars. It’s not known when the services will resume billing residents for utilities.
But they are paying for the EV charging, which is Level 2 EV charging equipment.
