Forget Hot Baths. Turkey Is Now the World’s Third-Largest Builder of Superyachts.

Turkey is the world's third-largest builder of superyachts.

Turkey, known for hot baths, baklava and fine leather goods, is also a serious contender in yacht building. But since marketing is not one of its strong suits, the country could stay the best-kept secret in the superyacht world. A rich maritime heritage, pedigree craftsmanship and low wages have created a niche that positions the country at the heart of yacht production.

The collection of brands dotted along Turkey’s Mediterranean coastline include Turquoise, Akyacht, Alia, Vicem, Sirena, Dunya and Bilgin, along with lesser-known builders. After it’s delivered later this year, Dream Symphony —a magnificent 462.7-foot schooner built by Dream Ship Victory—will become the largest private sailing yacht in the world, knocking the Dutch-built Black Pearl off the podium.

There have been some impressive names to come out of Turkey, including the sailing yacht Maltese Falcon , the 348-ft. Dream, 253-foot Go , and the 236-foot Axioma , among dozens of others.

Turkey is the world's third-largest builder of superyachts.

The 279-foot Victorious was delivered earlier this summer to its new owner, and made its public debut at the Monaco Yacht Show. Courtesy Akyachts

At the Monaco Yacht Show two weeks ago, Bilgin displayed the first of its 263 series, Tatiana . Its interior includes walls and furniture of rich Macassar ebony, eucalyptus and different marbles, and the exterior has a sleek, sexy profile. Lead designer Emrecan Ozgun of Unique Yacht Design said his firm went all out to avoid “high-dosage design clichés” throughout the boat, making it one of the most contemporary, elegant launches this year.

Another major launch at Monaco was Victorious , a 279-footer from Akyachts, a new yard that the owner established to build the sleek superyacht. London-based H2 Yachts did the contemporary interior design, putting paid to the notion that Turkey’s designs lag behind the European builders.

“It’s now accepted that Turkey ranks third in the world for yacht construction in terms of total feet, after Italy and Holland,” Alexei Mikhailov, founder and president of Bering Yachts, told Robb Report . “In my opinion, it will soon be considered second.”

In April 2021, Bering’s 78.7-foot B77 explorer Veronika was delivered to her Australian owner. It’s the first of four deliveries planned by the shipyard this year, including a Bering 70, Bering 92 and Bering 76. Mikhailov believes the fiscal benefits of Turkey’s 18 Free Zones (VAT-free, tax-free and duty-free) make yacht building more accessible.

The Antalya Free Zone is the main yacht-building hub, accounting for around 80 percent, followed by Istanbul’s Tuzla district and Bodrum in the Muğla province. In 2019, 47 superyachts with a total combined length of 2,630 feet came out of the Antalya Free Zone, generating $95 million in revenue. The cross-section of owners came from the Netherlands, the U.S., Qatar, Croatia, the Ivory Coast, Portugal, Jamaica, Russia, Oman and Djibouti.

But Turkey’s appeal cuts deeper still. It has a solid artisanal workforce, a phenomenon that has arisen from the country’s longstanding manufacturing history and bespoke furniture making. And when the risk of a shipyard going bankrupt is taken off the table, the opportunity becomes even sweeter.

“Purchasing a new build in Turkey is different from anywhere else in the world,” says Mikhailov. “The certificate of ownership is issued to the owner by the federal government from the very start of construction, which means Turkish shipyards effectively work for hire. So, it’s a really safe and transparent way of boat building that puts the owner in control from the beginning.”

In Bursa, at its 1.7-million-sq. foot yard, Sirena Yachts is making waves with its flagship 88, the shipyard’s largest model to date. Hulls three and four delivered in June 2021 to their Canadian and Spanish owners. The Canadian owner plans to live aboard for seven months a year, cruising the Bahamas and Caribbean. Eight hulls have sold in total to owners from Russia, North America and across Europe.

“The Sirena 88 is not a first-time user type of boat,” Ali Ongar, CCO at Sirena Yachts told Robb Report . “It’s designed for the owner who knows what they want. It’s a real hybrid, combining the American trawler-style of boat with superyacht speed and finesse and a bespoke interior, if required.”

Building speculation boats, Sirena Yachts has created a rapid lead time of just two years. But if an owner steps in up to 10 months before delivery, they still have the option to customize their yacht interior. “We never stop building our hulls,” says Ongar. “We can build a 58-foot yacht from start to finish in four months, so that means we have the capacity to deliver one boat every 35 days throughout the year. That’s the beauty of building on speculation.”

Many Turkish yards are also collaborating with established European designers to further elevate the status of the yachts. Ken Freivokh and Dykstra Naval Architects are the names behind Dream Symphony and Cor D. Rover penned Sirena 88’s interior.

Turkey is the world's third-largest builder of superyachts.

Sirena 88 facing the world, bow-on.Meanwhile, Evadne Yachts in Istanbul has also collaborated with Vripack to produce an entire series of Rock models, ranging between 80 and 138 feet. “When you pair world-class design with Turkey’s competitive boatbuilding edge, you create the ultimate talent pool,” Ali Sayakci, owner of Evadne Yachts, told Robb Report .

If the growing demand for new yachts following this year’s Cannes and Monaco yacht shows is any indication, Turkey’s boatbuilding sector could be in for a strong run over the next three years. “We have the best address in the world for semi-custom yachts,” says Sayakci.

5 Turkish Shipbuilders Making Waves in the Industry

The best yachts from shipbuilders in istanbul, turkey..

Istanbul, Turkey has a long history in global trade and shipbuilding as the city was once the capital of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires. Turkey is the bridge between Asia and Europe; and Istanbul lies in a strategic location on the shores of the Marmara Sea, the Golden Horn, and the Bosporus.

Over the (many) years, Turkish shipbuilding established an international reputation for producing technologically advanced boats largely credited to an experienced workforce. Today, shipbuilders such as Turquoise Yachts and Bilgin Yachts build some of the most impressive boats in the world.

In September 2021, Denison embarked on their annual shipyard tour in Europe. Past years took a team of yacht brokers to Italy , Germany , and Holland . This year, they visited Turkey, home to some of the most prestigious shipyards in the world. The tour helped Denison yacht brokers to gain a deeper understanding and first-hand experience of new products so they can recommend certain brands or models to clients.

Here are 5 Turkish shipbuilders making waves in the industry today.

Alpha Custom Yachts

Alpha Custom Yachts Shipyard

Alpha Custom Yachts is the new kid on the block of Turkish shipyards. The boutique shipbuilder was founded by Roberto and Jorge Aboumrad in 2017. As experienced yachtsmen, the Abourmrad brothers noticed that traditional yacht designs did not always reflect the way the owner used the boat. So they partnered with experienced boat builders in Turkey and established Alpha Custom Yachts.

When Denison visited this new Turkish shipyard, the team was impressed with current builds under construction. What other shipbuilders have as options are considered standard features on all of Alpha’s offerings including heavy-duty deck gear, a pair of oversized pocket anchors, substantial stainless safety rails, and top-quality teak decks. David Johnson is the point of contact for Alpha Custom Yachts in North America .

Turquoise Yachts

Turquoise Yachts Floating Dock

Turquoise Yachts was established in 1997 by Proteksan Yachts Inc. and Turquoise Yacht Construction. The shipbuilder operates out of two yards on the outskirts of Istanbul. The shipyard in Pendik is used for interior outfitting, and the shipyard in Kocaeli is dedicated to steel and aluminum work. The innovative minds at Turquoise launched a floating dock to lift and transport yachts (up to 2500 tons) between the two yards during construction and outfitting.

An extraordinary example of a Turquoise yacht is QUANTUM OF SOLACE , a 238-foot superyacht valued at $60 million. It’s one of four yachts with a double-height atrium in the main salon. Just an example of the imagination and ingenuity coming from this Turkish shipyard.

Bilgin Yachts

Bilgin Yachts Shipyard

Bilgin Yachts operates four shipyards throughout Istanbul to design and build custom superyachts. The Turkish shipyard employs over 400 highly-skilled craftsmen operating across its facilities so that about 90% of the manufacturing is completed in-house. Bilgin Yachts also operates its own marine stainless steel workshop and furniture design center that saves time and money during new builds.

During Denison’s shipyard tour of Bilgin Yachts, the team stepped on board the 80-meter superyacht TATIANA . She’s the first release in a series of three 80-meter superyachts under construction at Bilgin Yachts. TATIANA boasts a bullet-shaped bow and sporty profile complete with a two-level beach club, two pools, several bars, and a cinema.

Dunya Yachts

Dunya Yachts Shipyard

Dunya Yachts began as Ursa Shipyard in 1983. In 2005, current President Sedat Ergun transformed the shipyard into a powerhouse and renamed it Dunya (the Turkish word for “world”). Today, this Turkish shipyard completes new construction custom yachts up to 100 meters in length.

In 2013, Dunya launched an impressive 236-foot custom yacht called AXIOMA . Among the yacht’s many features are a two-story salon atrium, an owner’s deck with a private terrace, an infinity swimming pool, a gym, spa/steam room, and a 3D cinema. AXIOMA was listed with Denison for $80 million.

The Dunya Yachts Story

The waterfront site where the current shipyard sits has been in the Ergun family since the 1950’s. Originally the setting of their holiday home, the family took the opportunity to develop it into the Ursa Shipyard in 1983 after the area was rezoned in a government move to shift the growing commercial shipping industry out of the city centre.

In 2005, the current President, Sedat Ergun, took over the reins of the company and transformed the shipyard into the advanced technology facility it is today, dedicated to the construction and refit of the world’s finest superyachts. At the same time a new brand, Dunya Yachts, was born to compete with leading northern European shipyards in the construction of large yachts. Since modernisation, the yard has completed the build of the universally acclaimed 73m yacht Axioma and over the last 10 years established itself as the centre for refits for large yachts in Turkey with works completed to more than 25 yachts up to 72m in length.

About the Founder Sedat Ergun is the founder, owner and president of Dunya Yachts. Born in Turkey, he spent most of his formative years studying in the US.

After completing his education, he spent time working as a project manager at a large construction company specialising in enterprise resource planning before returning to Turkey in 2005, where he applied his experience to yacht building. He was the driving force behind the multi-award-winning 73m Dunya Yachts built Axioma, widely acknowledged as the finest yacht to ever come out of Turkey.

Third Largest Superyacht Builder in the World

Türkiye, being one of the top three superyacht manufacturers of the world, continue to make a mark of itself with the superyachts it launches. Innovation awarded Sirena 88 has become an example of blending a century of experience and innovation. Dream Symphony is indicated to be the world's largest sailboat with 140 meters when completed and will be Türkiye's new “Falcon”.

The Turkish Perspective MARCH 2020 ISSUE 80

Yachts Production in Türkiye Mega yacht production, one of the leading sectors in Türkiye's maritime area. Turkish mega yacht manufacturers, which rank among the top 3 in the world in the field of yacht production specially designed, have delivered many important projects so far. Although Türkiye and Italy as the quality in the production of the first unit sale terms are vying for the leadership of Germany and the Netherlands. Türkiye, which has become a global brand in the production of luxury yachts; has started to export yachts all over the world. Türkiye, or while being the world's third-largest superyacht exporting country; It was announced that the target was to be number one in the near future.

Companies operating in Antalya Free Zone, which has become a world brand in luxury yacht production, receive yacht orders from dozens of countries, Netherlands, the United States, Israel, Qatar, Croatia, Vietnam, Ivory Coast, Portuguese, Jamaica, Russia, Oman and Djibouti. 48 firms are operating in the free zone area and as of the end of 2019, the total number of the yachts produced increased up to 441 yachts with a total length of 8,240 meters and a value of 1.17 billion dollars.

Antalya Free Zone Corp. (ASBAŞ) General Manager Zeki Gürses said that Türkiye ranks third worldwide after Italy and the Netherlands in the super luxury yacht production and the Antalya Free Zone has been a top center for the construction, which was initially started in 2000. The Tuzla district of Istanbul in the northwest and the western resort town of Bodrum follows Antalya in this regard.

Saying that they aim to provide more in yacht towingunloading investments, Gürses said a new pier is on the way, the construction of which will begin in a short time. “With this new ship lift investment, the yacht capacity of 50 meters and 500 tons will increase up to 90 meters and 2,000 tons. We also plan to create a total investment budget of 20 million dollars, which is set to include a 500-ton mobile-wheeled travel lift investment along with other infrastructure investments,” he said.

Yacht and boat industry in Türkiye, especially after 2011, is growing. Especially specialized in manufacturing super yachts, labor cost and quality advantages in the manufacturing drives Türkiye forward in the European market often in yachts and boats.

When you examine the history of developed countries, you can see how much the seafaring and marine culture is valued and transformed into a state policy in most countries. Sea trade fleets owned, ports and marinas are indicators of this. The yacht and boat sector is a very large industrial area with yacht manufacturers, marine engines, equipment, boat and mooring areas, technical maintenance and refit processes, water sports and distributors.

Yacht and boat manufacturing industry is a sector with a high added value, capable of providing employment and high export rates. This industry machinery, iron-steel, wood, paint, chemistry, electrical-electronics, textile, decoration, rubber-plastic, etc. It is a branch of industry that produces as a result of combining the products of many branches of industry in shipyards and also gets service from various service sectors. The yacht and boat industry is different from the shipbuilding industry in terms of both its content and scope and the technology it applies, while large investments for the shipbuilding industry needs for a long time at the seaside, while the yacht and boatbuilding takes a shorter time and can operate in smaller places with less investment. Although it does not require large investments, the added value is much higher. Türkiye provides an important opportunity for the international market with its coasts, yacht tourism facilities, a rich culture and history, particularly to mega yachts. Istanbul being one of the most attractive tourist and historical spots in the world, will include mega yacht mooring opportunities in the future, and this will provide a boost and prestige for the country.

Türkiye's yacht and boat industry as a general rule that the owner of the title are summarize; ship and boat building industry with a long history, craftsmanship and skilled workmanship, trained workforce, flexible working hours, quality and production with international standards, affordable cost and labor costs, high quality and sufficient supply industry, suitable supply conditions, adequate technological and IT infrastructure, our country's proximity to the international market according to the Far East countries, appropriate climate and environmental conditions.

Türkiye has shown a steady rise in construction, particularly in superyachts (24 meters and above), since 2007 and has risen to the world third position in the number and length of superyachts delivered in 2010. When the 2014 global order book data is analyzed, Türkiye was ranked third in the world with 3,005 meters and 68 projects in the list of yachts ordered or in production, and in 2016, it maintained its third place in the ranking of countries according to the total length of the super yachts in order or under construction. According to the 2019 data, Türkiye ranks fourth with a total length of some 3,000 meters.

The global superyacht industry paused for breath in 2019, with the 807 projects over 24 meters ordered (with deposit taken) or under construction representing a slight dip on the 830 recorded in 2018. This brings a halt to a period of largely uninterrupted growth in the order book – from the low of 692 projects in 2013. The total length of projects this year is 32.3 kilometers, a decline of just one per cent from last year's figures. How to interpret this year's figures depends on your outlook: a welcome stabilization of a potentially overheating industry or an indication that buyers and shipyards are bracing against macroeconomic headwinds? We suspect there's truth to both positions but also note the exceptional levels of design and innovation seen in some of the projects under way - and the vision of the owners commissioning them.

Looking at all 170 active yards globally, 78 have only one project on their books and 64 are building three or more superyachts. Of these 64 yards, 33 are building five or more superyachts and just 17 have 10 or more projects under way.

Councilor of Chamber of Shipping and Chairman of Turkish Ship and Yacht Exporters Association Başaran Bayrak said that the exports cover the product groups defined under the 89.03 Customs Tariff Statistics Position worldwide. The volume of the market varies between years, but it is between 10-14 billion dollars. The amount of exports of Türkiye in yacht group vary in the range of 100-250 million dollars. The countries that import the most yachts in the world are the United States, Netherlands, the UK, Malta, the Cayman Islands and the Virgin Islands, which offer flag advantages. The top exporting countries are Italy, Netherlands, USA, Germany and France. The annual export values of these countries are between 1 billion dollars and 3 billion dollars. Türkiye is in the range of 100-250 million dollars.

Bayrak pointed out that Türkiye is one of the top five countries in the world, especially in the over 30 meters mega yacht production. Although it is in third place in terms of order book, we think it is still far from its real potential. In addition, we have shipyards that are internationally known and increasing their popularity every year. Important brands such as Turkuaz Yacht, Mengi Yay, Sirena Marine, Numarine, Bilgin Yat, Yıldız Gemi, Su Marine started to emerge. Türkiye has made significant advances in terms of quality and design in luxury products. The rise in the prestige of the country also increases the interest in the products produced in Türkiye. People preferring Türkiye to build their yachts as a luxury good is very important for country's image. Our yacht manufacturers should be promoted effectively in the world. Turkish shipyards are in a very favorable position for yacht production with their existing power and geographical advantages. In order to climb up to the top, the image of a safe country for foreign investors should be provided and the barriers faced by the producers should be developed in favor of the sector as well as support mechanisms should be in favor of the sector.

TOP BUILDER COUNTRIES

Italy remains in first place in 2020 with a slight growth of production (+3.8 percent). The Netherlands holds on to second place, albeit with a slight decrease in production (-7.1 percent).

Türkiye, placed in the fourth place in 2019, takes third place from the UK largely thanks to a slew of large orders. There were two newcomers to the builder leaderboard to 2020 Global Order Book, both Turkish: Bilgin, with five projects (four of them exceeding 80 metres), and Turquoise, which has six boats under construction.

In fifth place, Germany demonstrates higher activity (+22.8 percent), mainly thanks to Lürssen, Nobiskrug, and Abeking & Rasmussen, a yard that has dramatically increased the size of yachts it can deliver of late. All these yards have 100-meter-plus projects.

Some yards, however, seem increasingly unafraid to start very large boats without an owner. Bilgin has an 85-meter project under way that is currently for sale and Turquoise has started a 75 meter on spec.

Turgay Noyan, publisher of sailing and yachting magazine Naviga said, “When it comes to yacht production, there are two different tracks. The first is those that produce sailboats or motorboats in series, mainly in the range of 40-50 feet. We are not active in this track. The second one is the big yachts where the heights have grown gradually. It turned into mega yachts and then giga yachts. We are among the top three countries in the world in big yacht production.”

Noyan pointed out that Türkiye's production is powerful on large yachts, whether steel or composite, aluminum or mixed. As an example, Tom Perkins' famous Maltese Falcon yacht was built in Yıldız Shipyard in Istanbul. And it is the largest export item in a single product in the history of the Republic.

Türkiye also has a very, very important tradition in woodworking. Even if our number of craftsmen gradually decreases, Türkiye will not lose its superiority in this regard.

The fact that the people from different sectors as well as those who were producers, created an excellent potential in Turkish yacht manufacturing. There are excellent examples such as Rahmi Koç's RMK Shipyard, and Inan Kıraç's Sirena.

Turkish brands such as Su Marine, Bilgin Yacht, Sarp Yacht, Mengi Yay, Ege Yacht, Sirena, CMB Yachting, World Yacht, Momenta Yacht, Zero Emmision, DSV and Vicem are recognized in the world in big yachts.

Turkish companies such as Mercan, Atak, Proteksan, MAT, Salmakis, İstanbul Ege Yat and Soyarslan are known in sails and smaller boats. Türkiye also has great interior and exterior boat designers who have an impact in yacht production such as, Tanju Kalaycıoğlu, Rıza Tansu, Red Yacht Design, Haluk Suntay, Aslı Felah and Aslı Aygen.

50-METER SAILING YACHT ALL ABOUT U 2 LAUNCHED IN TÜRKİYE

The 50-meter sailing yacht sistership to All About U 2 has been launched in 2019.

Built from a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, All About U 2 was designed by Ginton Naval Architects and built by Ada Yacht Works in Türkiye.

Accommodation is for a total of 12 guests in six cabins while the staff quarters allow for a crew of four. The yacht comes packed with a number of water toys and tenders including seabobs and paddleboards.

Other features include a sundeck bar and open plan beach club, which is revealed by a folding transom.

The interior meanwhile is decorated in grey, orange and brown accents for a “contemporary” living space. Large windows flood the interior with natural light while the formal dining area is positioned forward with seats for up to 12 guests.

The yacht will have a top speed of 14.5 knots with power coming from two 800hp Caterpillar C-18 Acert diesel engines.

All About U 2 will now undergo sea trials ahead of delivery this summer. Following delivery, she will be managed for charter by Turk Yacht in the Turkish and Greek waters. All About U 2 remains listed for sale at Fraser for an asking price of 19.5 million euros.

At the outset, the hull was stripped to bare steel, the complete superstructure and surplus metal works were removed, and the interior gutted and sandblasted. The 320 tons of steel that was removed was replaced with 550 tons of new fabrications, including the new superstructure and 112 electrically operated sliding windows each weighing 500kg. New stabilizers and other heavy engine room equipment were installed before the vessel was faired, painted and relaunched. Following her launch, new pipework was installed, she was rewired, and her new interior, all floating on rubber mounts to minimize noise transmission, was inserted. All these works were compliant with SOLAS 36 Passenger requirements.

The Judges concluded that this was an extraordinary conversion that not only changed the whole exterior profile of the vessel, improving it beyond recognition, but also gave her a completely new interior, which has a refreshingly understated and modern appearance that abounds in luxury. This, they felt, was a conversion for which the owner should be justifiably proud.

NUMARINE SOLD 5 HIGHPERFORMANCE YACHTS

Selling luxury yachts in multiples isn't the easiest feat, but Numarine just made it look like a cakewalk. The Turkish shipyard has sold not one, but five compact expedition vessels from its popular XP series.

According to the builder, four 85-foot 26XP yachts and one 104-foot 32XP superyacht were snapped up, meaning a whopping 14 yachts from the XP series have now been sold.

“These achievements indicate the relevance and popularity of the series,” said founder and chairman of Numarine Omer Malaz. “We are very pleased that five more international customers will be able to experience what high quality and impeccable Numarine style are.”

To recap, both the 26XP and 32XP are billed as modern expedition yachts. They feature efficient hulls and impressive long range-up to 3,000 nautical miles for the 26XP and 4,000 nautical miles for the 32XP-as well spacious interiors which make cruising at length a cinch. The vessels were designed by Can Yalman with naval architecture by Umberto Tagliavini and exude Built from a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, All About U 2 was built by Ada Yacht Works in Türkiye. Turquoise Yachts (formerly Proteksan Turquoise Yachts)

Established in 1997 Turquoise Yachts are leaders in the Turkish boat building industry. Megayachts from 40 – 72m have been delivered to clients from the UK, Europe, Russia and the USA. The latest launches include the 55m Ileria, the 70m Talisman and the award-winning 72m Vicky. The M/Y Turquoise was shortlisted for the International Yacht and Aviation Award in 2015. Located on the outskirts of Istanbul are two shipyards, Kocaeli and Pendik. Here ten megayachts can be simultaneously built in the new purpose built floating dock. Design teams specialise in high levels of joinery along with craftsmen who are proficient when working with materials like stainless steel, leather and wood. Interiors are always customised to clients’ preferences.

Turquoise Yachts (previously Proteksan Turquoise Yachts) is Turkey’s largest superyacht builder, established by the two leaders of the Turkish Boat building Industry; Proteksan Yachts Inc. and Turquoise Yacht Construction. This union constituted the pioneer of luxury yacht builders in Turkey with worldwide recognition and impressive fleet at sea. The company was established in 1997 to start building the 50 meter Dubois designed motor yacht Mosaique .

Since Mosaique's delivery, Proteksan-Turquoise Yachts and Turquoise Yacht has delivered a range of superyachts including: 58.20 m motor yacht “BARAKA” , 54.70 m motor yacht “SEQUEL P” , “VAJOLIROJA” (ex ANATOLIA) built by Proteksan Turquoise in 2001, the 53 metre superyacht SIRIUS (ex Leo Fun) , the 53.20 m trawler yacht KINTA (ex VINYDREA) , CAPRICORN (ex Cameleon B) , Odessa , 58.2 m Petara , Talisman C motor yacht, 53.4 m PEGASO (Ex M/Y Petara) or 2013 ILERIA superyacht or the 72m mega yacht VICKY .

In 2005, a company, Celik Yat, fully owned by the Proteksan-Turquoise Yachts partners was founded in Kocaeli Free Zone with the aim of producing the hulls and superstructures. After the steel and aluminium work is completed in Çelikyat, the vessels are transferred to Proteksan Turquoise Shipyard wherein the interior decoration and rest of the work on superyachts. In 2007 Proteksan Turquoise moved to its new facilities in Guzelyali-Pendik with a capacity of holding 4 yachts up to 80 meters. The two new facilities jointly allowed Proteksan Turquoise to reach a capacity to deliver 4 top class yachts every year. The second shipyard is located in Golcuk across the bay from Pendik. It is here that the steel and aluminium hull and superstructure work is completed, as well as the installation of some machinery and heavy piping is done.

Specialising in the construction of steel and aluminium megayachts from 40 to 70+ metres, the Turkish shipyard has created itself one of the most impressive fleets on the water. Utilising the space and labour force benefits of a two-yard combination, the shipyard of Proteksan Turquoise is headquartered in Istanbul. From the company’s very first launch in to its latest fleet of new and semi-custom designs, the yard offers a wide range of steel and aluminium superyachts, beginning from 40 metres in length.

In the year 2008, the prestigious “Yacht Construction Award” was given to the President of Board of Directors of Proteksan Turquoise Yachts Inc., Hayati Kamhi by the President of Board of Executives of International Ship Engineers Science and Technology Institute, Mr. Michael Everard. PROTEKSAN TURQUOISE and ÇELÄ°KYAT were also awarded the ISO 9001:2000 certificate in January 2009. Proteksan Turquoise became a member of SYBAss as of 1 January 2010.

In addition, Turquoise Yachts is recognised for manufacturing a few of the best sailing yachts in the world. The shipyard has surely created a niche for them by offering yachts with high quality, consistency and lasting performance.

Did you know that Turkey is in the TOP 3 of the largest yacht manufacturers in the world? Commercial Ships and Pleasure Yacht construction is the largest branch of the Turkish economy exported. And this is not surprising. The first large shipyards appeared here during the time of the Byzantine Empire. And residents built traditional ships thousands of years before that. Then the mighty Ottoman Empire made its shipyards the strongest and largest in the world. And at the end of the 20th century, this industry received a new stimulus for development.

Here you can find Rina Class and Bureau Veritas approved custom-made yacht construction projects in Turkey. As a result you get new build yacht to be used during 2022 season with price 20-30% less than build Europe.

Our project manager accompanies you at all stages of the project - from design, continuing with a visit to the shipyard, price negotiation and contract terms and condition negotiation, followed by project management of the construction ending with receiving the yacht. We also monitor the entire construction process with you. We do not simply value our reputation and do our job in the best way – we build up trusted, almost family-like relationships with our clients. So honesty, credibility and transparency are guaranteed implicitly.

For many yacht owners, the solution to finding more space aboard for friends and family is summed up by that immortal line by Chief Brody in Jaws: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Until now, bigger has typically meant longer. But that’s quickly changing as more and more builders are creating interior volume by going wider and taller. For disrupter builder Wally Yachts and its polarizing new Wallywhy 150—which refers to its internal volume rather than the boat’s length—the quirky design is said to deliver 50 percent more space than more traditional 78-footers.

Other builders like Princess have been in the game since 2021. Its X95 first appeared several years ago, effectively throwing down the gauntlet as a way forward for sub-100-foot yachts to supersize both interior and exterior volumes.

Since then, many other builders of small superyachts have jumped on board, with designs that typically have somewhat bloated profiles, far-forward main suites, and open transoms—features all designed to maximize space but minimize length.

Here are 10 new yachts 100 feet and under that are breaking the mold in an attempt to dominate the nautical space race.

It’s no wonder that disrupter Italian builder Wally—now part of the Ferretti Group—calls its latest head-turner a “spaceship.” Claiming up to 50 percent more space than comparable 78-footers, the 150 (named after interior volume rather than length) has standout features like a main salon with over eight feet of headroom, and a beam of more than 22 feet. The pragmatic design includes a one-level main deck attached to an open rear cockpit that offers easy access to the water. Its most noteworthy feature is the rule-breaking, full-beam master suite tucked into the bow on the main deck. It has wraparound glass—stretching all the way around the bow—for panorama-like views from the main bedroom. Priced from about $6.7 million.

Short for Ultra High Volume, this new Turkish-built pocket superyacht is a sistership to Lazzara’s UHV 100 and 125 models. The newest Lazzara boasts an impressive 2,153 square feet of interior space in its 87-foot length. Arguably, the boat is not pretty in a classic sense. The towering hull sides, blunt, plumb bow, and dark-tinted glass make it look more like a dinner cruiser than a mini-superyacht. But the interior space is astonishing, from the cavernous Sky Lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, to the salon with a separate, chandelier-lit dining area and chef’s galley. With a fuel capacity of 3,000 gals, the twin 1,000 hp Volvo D13s deliver a top speed of 16 knots. The boat also has transatlantic range. Base price starts at about $10.9 million.

Movie nights under the stars should have a whole new appeal aboard UK builder Sunseeker’s brand-new 98-footer. Lie back on the yacht’s extra-wide foredeck sunpad and watch the latest blockbuster on a 140-inch screen with laser projection. Or, if you’re the lucky owner, stargaze from your private terrace tucked away in the bow, just steps from the full-beam main-deck master suite, with atrium-style glass sliding doors. One of the best innovations here is the wide, uninterrupted walkway around the entire top deck, which provides safe, easy access from the flybridge to the forward entertaining space. With its twin 2,600 hp V16 MTU diesels, top speed is an impressive 29 knots. Priced from about $10.5 million.

With its twin 2,600 hp V16 MTU diesels, top speed is an impressive 29 knots. Priced from about $10.5 million.

For its brand-new Grande 26M compact superyacht, Italian builder Azimut has gone extra wide to create massive interior and exterior spaces. Spatial highlights include a full-width flybridge that’s almost 20 feet across and close to 40 feet long, and a foredeck entertaining area that seems more like an outdoor patio. The Alberto Mancini-styled go-fast cruiser is crammed with space-enhancing innovations, such as a teak-decked garage door that, at the touch of a button, hinges upwards to extend the rear cockpit by almost five feet. New ZF pod drives coupled to the yacht’s twin 1,650 hp MAN V12 diesels also save space. It is priced from about $6.2 million.

As we said during our 2021 tour of Britain’s Princess Yachts’ tri-deck X95 “When it comes to the polarizing, head-spinning design, there are no half-measures, no in-betweens. You either love it. Or loathe it.” But what those eye-popping lines hide is perhaps the most spacious 95-foot luxury cruiser in the category. Reckoned to be some 40 percent roomier than cruisers with the same length, the X95 has stretch-out accommodations for up to 10 in five cabins and living spaces that rival most apartments. The flybridge covers almost the entire length of the yacht. The 100 is also fast, with twin 1,990 hp MAN V12s delivering a top speed of 23 knots. Prices start at about $12 million.

This broad-beamed 96-footer is from the Italian builder Extra Yachts, which is part of the Palumbo Superyachts Group. While it’s called the Triplex, there are actually four levels if you include the cozy upper sundeck with its outdoor kitchen, dining area and oversized sunpads. The exterior comes courtesy of Italian designer Francesco Guida, while interiors are by Milan-based Hot Labs. Both teams have made the most of the yacht’s class-leading 25-foot beam. Notable features include a vast full-beam master on the main level and an upper salon dedicated entirely to dining, with a table for 10, an open chef’s galley and an adjoining outdoor bar. Twin Volvo IPS1350s deliver a 16.5-knot top speed. Priced from $12 million.

Down in the salon is a huge 11-seat U-shaped bar that would delight any mixologist. The five staterooms in the twin hulls have space for 10.
Cross a spacious Miami high-rise penthouse with a Canyon Ranch spa and the result could be this new 96-foot superyacht from Italian builder Arcadia. Boasting a remarkable 4,300 square feet of total living space, there’s room for 12 guests and five crew. And the living spaces even expand, courtesy of fold-down terraces in the main salon and on the rear deck. But the yacht’s focus on wellness and healthy living sets it apart.
Think of it as offering pace, with space. Turkish yard Numarine has been building its bold 85-foot 26XP explorer style mini-superyacht since 2018, but later this year, it will launch the U.S.-focused 26XP Fast. Instead of slow-churning 435 hp diesels and nine-knot cruising, it’s bolting-in a pair of mighty 1,800 hp MAN V12s and modifying the hull to deliver a top speed of 31 knots. What hasn’t changed is the XP’s cavernous interior and expensive deck space. Take the top-deck flybridge which, thanks to the yacht’s 21-foot beam and far-forward helm, spans over 700 square feet. That space will include a dining table for eight, a full outdoor kitchen, and more lounges than a Saint-Tropez beach bar. Prices start from $6.95 million.

Top 10 Construction Companies in Turkey

Top 10 Construction Companies in Turkey

 • July 31, 2023
 • Ivan Krivalov

Turkey is one of the largest players on the global real estate development scene. Turkish construction companies work on projects in their own country and beyond its borders in the countries of Europe, Asia, and Africa. The American magazine Engineering News Record (ENR) publishes an annual list of the 250 largest international construction companies, and in the last several years, Turkish developers have taken up about 40 positions on that list. Here is what you need to know about the crème de la crème of Turkey’s construction market and turkish construction companies.

Rönesans Holding

 • Tekfen Construction & Installation

Yapı Merkezi

Tav construction.

Our list of construction companies in Turkey opens the Rönesans Holding. Turkish engineer Erman Ilıcak founded Rönesans Holding in 1993 in St. Petersburg, Russia, but the company’s headquarters are now located in Ankara, Turkey. It is Turkey’s largest international construction company. Rönesans has been on the ENR’s Top 250 Developers list for the past 15 years and currently ranks 24 th in the world and 8 th in Europe.

The developer is currently working on largest construction projects in Turkey and in other 28 countries. One of the most famous is the Lakhta Centre in St. Petersburg, the tallest building in Europe.

The company pays particular attention to the seismic safety of its properties. For example, the city hospital built by the Rönesans in Turkey's Elazığ survived an earthquake that measured 6.8 on the Richter scale.

Antalya

The next turkish international construction company is Limak Holding. Limak Construction was founded in 1976 and it expanded into a holding over the years. In its almost half-century-long history, it has become one of the largest construction companies in Turkey, running projects in 14 countries around the world.

The holding’s most ambitious buildings are located in Istanbul. The developer built the Sabiha Gökçen International Airport and Istanbul International Airport, the latter being third-largest in the world. Another record-holding project that the company was involved in was the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge across the Dardanelles, the world's longest medium-span suspension bridge.

Tekfen Construction & Installation

The company was founded in 1956 by three Turkish engineers. It is now a large holding whose work is not limited to construction: for instance, since the 1960s, Tekfen has been known as a large manufacturer of incandescent light bulbs.

Tekfen engages in a wide range of activities including the agricultural and chemical industries. Tekfen is involved in construction projects in various countries (for instance, in Russia and Qatar), but their largest projects have been carried out in Turkey, such as the Istanbul metro and the Atatürk Olympic Stadium with 80,000 seats.

Yapı Merkezi is one of the major construction companies in Istanbul , known primarily for non-residential projects. Founded in 1965, the holding specialises in transport systems in Europe and Asia. Among the company's most famous projects are the Dubai Metro (the world's longest driverless metro) and the Eurasia Tunnel running underneath the Bosporus Strait (the world's first two-level automobile tunnel built under the seabed).

Yapı Merkezi also participates in restoration activities: the company restored the Galata Tower, one of Istanbul’s most famous landmarks.

Ant Yapı

Relatively young turkey construction company Ant Yapı was founded in 1991. The company is one of the international construction companies in Turkey and it specialises primarily in international projects, not only in Europe and Asia but also in America. In the US, Ant Yapı and Italy’s Missoni fashion house built the luxurious Missoni Baia residential complex in Miami and also took part in the restoration of the Crown Building, one of the oldest skyscrapers in New York, erected in 1921.

Ant Yapı has also led many projects in Russia: for instance, the company was involved in the construction of several towers at the Moscow City business centre, and also in projects at Domodedovo International Airport.

TAV Construction is one of the significant names of construction companies in Turkey. The company with more than 20 years of history specialises in the construction of airports and related infrastructure. Its portfolio includes airports in Doha (Qatar), Saudi Arabia, and Tbilisi. Interesting fact: in addition to construction, the company operates in a rather rare niche, it specialises in the maintenance and support of existing airports.

TAV Construction is participating in many large projects in the Middle East. Among the most notable projects are the Times Square Centre, the DAMAC Tower by Paramount, and the EMAAR Square in the United Arab Emirates.

Founded in 1957, the company operates in several fields: engineering, electric power, real estate, and trade. ENKA is one of the most valuable brands in Turkey, with a market value of $10 billion on the Istanbul Stock Exchange.

In addition to properties in Turkey, ENKA has constructed many famous buildings in Russia including the Krasnye Holmy business centre in Moscow and skyscrapers of the Moscow City business centre. The company has completed many industrial, transport, and medical facilities in Libya, Kazakhstan, Algeria, Croatia, and others.

The Mapa Group conglomerate (called the MNG Group of Companies until 2020) was established in 1976 as a group of companies engaged in construction, air transportation, and telecommunications. Most of the developer's projects are in the Middle East and Africa, where Mapa is building airports, transport routes, and water systems.

The company became famous in the early 2000s for building unconventional hotels in Antalya: the buildings were perfect replicas of the world's architectural landmarks: for instance, Istanbul's Topkapı Palace and the Moscow Kremlin.

Unlike the aforementioned developers, Sinpaş GYO focuses primarily on residential development. For example, this construction company is an active developer in istanbul. The company was founded in 1974 and has been creating residential complexes in Ankara, Istanbul, and other Turkish cities for many years.

Sinpaş GYO has over 75 successfully completed projects in its portfolio. The main principle of the developer is an emphasis on green zones. Sinpaş GYO apartment buildings are always surrounded by gardens, squares, swimming pools, and even canals.

The IC Holding group of companies was founded in 1969. Its main activities are construction, power generation, and tourism. IC is currently participating in the construction of Akkuyu NPP, Turkey's first nuclear power plant. The holding’s development division specialises in the construction of luxury 5-star hotels in Turkey’s resort towns, under the management of the IC Hotels chain.
