skippered catamaran whitsundays

The other option is to hire the boat with a skipper allowing you to totally relax as you drift around paradise on earth. The skippers have intimate knowledge of weather patterns, places to see, activities to do and are a great source of information for the local knowledge and history of the area.

🔎 Table of Contents

Why should you charter a boat in the Whitsundays?

It’s an experience of a lifetime.

The Whitsundays are truly beautiful! They are home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world: Whitehaven beach and loads of stunning spots. There is so much to discover in the Whitsundays.

There is also a plethora of things to do including snorkelling, hiking, kayaking and scuba diving.

cruise whitsunday island

It’s private

The Whitsundays are a popular tourist destination. Over a third of international tourists visit the Whitsundays each year and a lot of Australian go there for a resort holiday.

Although booking a group tour is also a great way to explore the islands, you will often be with a lot of people on the boat.

Chartering a boat in the Whitsunday islands will give you the luxury of being on your own, with your family or friends!

You can make your own itinerary

When booking a group tour, you will have to follow the set itinerary . If there is a place that is not included or somewhere you’d like to spend more time, you won’t get that option.

If you choose to charter a boat, you will be able to choose your own itinerary and spend as much time as you want in the locations of your choice! This is the perfect way to create your dream holiday!

Most of the tours always go to the same places (Whitehaven, Hamilton Island …) but there are a lot of hidden gems in the Whitsundays. If you like to discover places off-the-beaten-path, being in control of your itinerary will be a huge advantage for you.

Bareboating is legal in the Whitsundays

Chartering a boat in the Whitsundays

The Whitsundays are one of the only places in the world where you can rent a bareboat charter.

What is bareboating? That’s being able to charter a boat without a license!

The boat is fully equipped but doesn’t come with a skipper. You will be skippering it yourself.

You can think of it as a sea version of an RV or caravan.

You don’t need any experience to rent a boat in the Whitsundays. The staff will teach you everything you need to know beforehand and you can then enjoy your trip!

That having been said, although it’s authorised, it doesn’t mean that you should. The Whitsundays are a great place to go sailing, especially if you are beginner, however, it can also be very stressful for some people.

If you have no experience at all and don’t actually want to spend time skippering, bareboating can become more of a nightmare than a dream. If you choose to charter a boat with a crew, you won’t have to worry about anything.

If you want to hire a yacht because you want to be in control and be the skipper, then bareboating will be exactly what you need. If it’s because you want to extensively explore the Whitsundays, relax and not worry about anything, a crewed boat will be better for you.

Best ways to charter a boat in the Whitsundays

There are 2 ways you can hire a boat in the Whitsundays: with a crew or bareboating.

Here is how they both work.

summertime whitsundays cruise

Skippered yacht charter in the Whitsundays

When looking at catamaran or yacht hire in the Whitsundays, opting for a customisable crewed private charter is the hassle-free option.

You will be hiring a private boat and can choose your itinerary with the crew. The crew includes skippers and guides. They will take care of everything.

This includes the operational sides of things. You don’t have to learn how to sail the boat, the skipper will do everything for you!

But that also includes the catering side. Food is included. The crew will prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are also snacks and soft drinks available. If you want alcohol, you will need to bring it yourself though.

You will also find snorkelling and swimming equipment. You need a wet suit to swim in the Whitsundays in all safety. Although the stinger season is “only” from October to May, it’s just better to wear the wet suit all the time. You never know.

If you don’t live on the coast of Australia, you may not have any. By renting a private catamaran, you won’t have to think about that. They are already there.

This famous charter company in the Whitsundays offer packages for 2, 3 or 4 days.

You will be working with the crew beforehand to set up your itinerary. That’s another great thing about getting a skippered yacht charter in the Whitsundays: they know the archipelago better than their own pockets!

They will come up with loads of recommendations to help you choose your Whitsunday itinerary. But of course, if you have any special requests, they will include them as well!

Everything is up to you!

In terms of budget, chartering a boat is obviously more expensive than going on a tour. However, you can take up to 9 people. If you are booking for a big group, it actually works out just as cheap as going on a cruise.

Regardless of the number of people on board, the service is impeccable and it’s always well worth it.

Pros of booking a skippered yacht charter:

  • Everything is included. No need to worry about anything.
  • No need to waste time trying to understand how to sail the boat or cooking
  • The crew know exactly what they are doing. They will save you a lot of time and can advise on where to go.
  • The crew can recommend hidden gems and secret spots
  • You can create the itinerary of your dream
  • It’s perfect to enjoy a relaxing holiday
  • It’s safer because you are with a team of professionals
  • You won’t get to learn how to sail
  • There is a crew onboard which means it’s not 100% private

How to book a private crewed yacht in the Whitsundays

The best way to book is online. You can check the prices here (from Airlie Beach).

Once you booked, the company will get in touch with you to plan your itinerary.

Pro tip: If you are visiting during high season, make sure to book in advance to avoid any disappointment.

Bareboat yachts in the Whitsundays

Whether you are looking for a catamaran hire in the Whitsundays or to rent a private yacht, you can choose the option of bareboating.

Sunset in the whitsundays

Bareboating means that you rent your own private boat and will be the one directing it.

In most places in the world, you need a license to do this however, that’s not the case in the Whitsundays.

Anyone can go bareboating there! The rental company will teach you everything you need to know before you leave.

Bareboat charters come with no crew or provisions which means you have to organise everything yourself.

Even if you have no experience, it’s not something that you should worry about too much. You will receive a 3-hour training course from the charter company before you leave. They don’t want you to be left at your own devices, not knowing what to do.

Their staff is very knowledgeable and use to train people all the time.

Also, it’s fairly easy to sail in the Whitsundays (all things considered) as it’s protected by the Great Barrier Reef.

It’s also a unique opportunity to enjoy a very private holiday in the Whitsundays.

Pros of bareboating in the Whitsundays:

  • It’s very private. You will be the only one(s) on the boat.
  • Freedom: you can go wherever you want, whenever you want.
  • If being a skipper has always been one of your dreams, it’s just about to become true!
  • You will learn how to sail in one of the prettiest places in Australia.
  • If you already know the area well, it’s an amazing thing to do!
  • Although you can do it, it’s not particularly recommended if you don’t have any experience. You will spend a lot of time trying to understand how the boat works and you may get a bit lost.
  • You will have to do everything including cooking.
  • You need to shop beforehand and take your own equipment
  • Although the Whitsundays are pretty safe, you need to be extra careful as you will be on your own

FAQs and Tips to charter a boat in the Whitsundays

Here are a few useful tips when chartering a boat in the Whitsundays.

What type of boats can you charter?

You can rent pretty much any sort of boats in the Whitsundays. The most popular ones are private yachts, catamaran and sailing boats.

Do I need to book online?

It’s preferable to do so. Booking online is very easy. It will give more time to the crew to plan your itinerary.

More importantly, that’s the only way to be sure you will be able to go on your trip. During the low season, you may be able to book on-site but if you are going there during the high season, you really should book online.

All of that having been said if you are going during the wet season and outside of school holidays, you may be able to get a good deal by contacting the charter companies directly. It can be worth comparing and shopping around.

Once you got a few quotes, call back the ones you like and ask them if they can do better in terms of pricing.

Although they might not review the price, they might throw some extras.

What should I pack to go boating in the Whitsundays?

If you opt for a skippered boat, everything will be included. You only need to take clothes (dresses, swimming costume, jacket, jumper, t-shirt and shorts) and shoes ( hiking shoes and flip flops ).

You will also need some toiletries basics (makeup, toothbrush…).

Finally, make sure you are taking a lot of waterproof sunscreen (eco-friendly preferably)!

If you are opting for bareboating, ask your provider what is included so you can plan accordingly.

How long should I stay in the Whitsundays?

I recommend sailing around the Whitsundays for at least 3 days and 2 nights. There is a lot to do and see and you may feel like you are missing out if you go any shorter.

That having been said, it all depends on your budget. Chartering a yacht is not a cheap activity so you have to do what is best for you. 2 days would be the bare minimum though.

Then, you can always opt to stay in Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island, Daydream Island or Hayman Island for another few days or week. Some of the best resorts in Australia are located in the Whitsundays and it’s well worth checking out.

How do I get to the Whitsundays?

The best way to get to the Whitsundays is by plane. You can fly direct to either Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island.

Should I rent my boat from Airlie Beach or Hamilton island?

There are a lot more options from Airlie Beach. Prices are usually lower too.

Finally, there are more flights going to Proserpine airport.

Therefore, as a general thing, I’d say that Airlie Beach is often a better option.

However, if you also want to experience what it’s like to stay in a beautiful resort in the Whitsundays. You can also charter a boat from there.

Which charter boat suits my needs?

Choosing a boat can be fun. There is such a great variety to choose from depending on your experience, passenger numbers, and the type of holiday you want to have.

Whitsunday Escape boasts the largest bareboat fleet in the Whitsundays. The fleet consists of Power Catamarans, Sailing Catamarans and Sailing Yachts ranging from 38 ft to 50 ft, that can take from 2 – 12 passengers. With a diverse fleet of 39 Whitsunday charter boats, we have a boat to suit.

Experienced sailors might prefer a monohulled yacht for speed and performance. First timers might want to choose a power boat or sailing catamaran.

Did you know you can hire a sailing catamaran and not use the sails? The layout of the catamarans might suit you better so they make a great choice for most people. All of our catamarans have twin engines. Some of them move along under power alone nearly as fast as the power boats!

If we don’t have a sailing boat available for your dates, maybe try a power boat this time, the flybridge is a lovely spot to relax and watch the world go by.

Whitsunday Escape does not have any relationship with wholesalers or agents and you will only find our boats displayed on our website.

Whitsunday Rent A Yacht

Skippered & guided charters

Check availability, limited sailing experience let one of our sail travel guides show you the sights of the whitsundays while you find your sea legs. or consider hiring our fully skippered leopard 50 with a host..

When you charter a boat with us, no matter what your experience, you will receive a comprehensive boat and area briefing with a qualified briefer. The briefing will include a thorough introduction to manoeuvring your vessel, its fittings and your cruising area. You will also be offered assistance with planning the ideal itinerary.

If, however, you would like either additional training or a guide for the duration of your charter, we can arrange to add a sail guide to your booking. A sail guide will be able to assist you with learning how to operate your vessel confidently and safely.

Whitsunday Rent a Yacht offers a fully skippered charter service on our Leopard 50, Point of Sail. Our skippered service includes two crew, a Skipper and a Host.

A skippered yacht charter means you are not responsible for running the boat, whereas a sail travel guide is there to assist you and build your boating confidence.

Our host & skippered charter offering

Point of Sail, a Leopard 50 sailing catamaran , is the largest and one of the most high-end vessels in our fleet.

Due to her size and depending on your qualifications, if you want to charter Point of Sail, you may be required to have a skipper and host. Or perhaps you simply want to add a small professional crew so you relax, taking in the stunning Whitsundays onboard a luxurious and remarkable boat.

A skipper’s role is to be fully responsible for operating the boat and safety of those onboard.  They are the person who commands a boat — the captain if you like.

A host is there to ensure guests are looked after and comfortable. They also act as crew support for the skipper.

Your skipper and host onboard Point of Sail can assist in making itinerary decisions based on their extensive local knowledge. They will also allow you to be involved with the ins and outs of operating the boat if you wish.

Like a sail guide, the skipper and the host must be catered for and they each need a private cabin.

If you wish to have a skipper you must also hire a host (regulatory requirement).

A skipper and host on Point of Sail will cost approximately $950 per day of charter (both crew). Please note that this service is subject to availability.

* Price is indicative and subject to change. Cost increases with a public holiday

 Additional Training from your Briefer

Should you wish to organise some additional training, perhaps you have very limited sailing experience, however, would still like to do a self-sail trip, your boat briefer can accompany you for the first few hours of your charter.

We highly recommend first-time charterers spend additional time with their briefer on the first day, to ensure they are confident operating the boat on their own. Speak to our reservations team when making your booking so additional training time can be allocated.

Additional training is $70 per hour – between 1 and 3 hours

Overnight Sail Guide options

Take the pressure off with a sail-guided holiday. Whether you’re a novice wanting to cruise around the Whitsunday Islands or an experienced yachts-person looking for a chance to share the load, having a sail guide on board allows you to enjoy maneuvering your vessel with guidance from an expert.

Our sail guide will be happy to assist you to sail, motor and anchor the vessel while on your charter holiday.  All of our sail guides are qualified and highly experienced. They will be able to recommend anchorages and assist and provide a wealth of local knowledge all while showing you as little or as much as you would like to know about sailing.

You, the skipper, and your crew will still have full responsibility for the vessel , its inventory and all its fittings.

You pay a daily rate on top of your boat charter, so you have absolute flexibility to choose the days that suit you. All you need to do is provide your sail guide with a separate cabin to sleep in and food and drink for each day of your charter.

Overnight sail guide $400.00 per day of charter (subject to availability) * cost increases with a public holiday

Sail Guide FAQ’s

Our friendly, qualified and experienced sail guides are available at any time of the year, providing sailing expertise in a world-class sailing destination. You can organise a sail guide for your entire trip or just a day or two, whichever suits you. Below are some commonly asked questions about the finer details that come up when considering a sail guide and the answers to help you decide what’s right for you.

Can I do any sailing myself?

Depending on your level of sailing experience you can do as much or as little sailing as you like, including taking the wheel. You are the skipper and your sail guide is there to assist in a way that suits you.

We highly recommended adding a sail guide either for half a day or a night if you have minimal boating experience or if it’s been a while since you were at the helm. A sailing guide can also benefit you if you’ve been hoisting your own sails for decades and just want a little help and support with some of the more physical aspects of keeping a yacht moving under sail.

You may have a first mate on board who just prefers sunbathing to pulling ropes, or has too much on their hands keeping crew members (particularly the little ones) occupied!

Please note that sail guides will take pride in the presentation of the yacht, but they are not cooks, cleaners, babysitters or maids.

Where will the sail guide sleep?

Sail guides must be allocated a stern (down the back) cabin to themselves for the duration of your charter, though occasionally the bow (up the front) can be agreed upon. Anything outside of this normal arrangement may be arranged with discretion between you and your sail guide upon check-in. But please assume your sail guide will need a cabin in the stern.

What/How do we feed our Sail Guides?

If you are planning to pre-order all of your food through our recommended provisioning services or to do your own food shop, then remember to buy enough to accommodate the sail guide. Feel free to call our sales team so they can find out if your sail guide has any dietary requirements.

When visiting a resort, you may invite your sail guide to dinner on shore, and they may accept or choose to stay aboard. If there is no food aboard and you would prefer your sail guide not to come with you, then you can provide them with ‘pocket money’ so that they can pop into their favourite local haunt. They’ll only ever be a phone call away should you need them.

What does the sail guide do in the evening?

That’s entirely up to you as every group is different and interacts with people in different ways. Our sail guides are always friendly and professional, and comfortable with meeting new people and adept at reading different social situations.

If you invite your sail guide to be part of the fun in the evening they may accept or choose to decline, opting to stay on the yacht and wait for your return. You may find that your sail guide is an early riser who bunks down early after a long day’s sailing.

Do we have to tip our sail guide?

While it is not compulsory, we do encourage you to tip your sail guide. A guideline amount would be 10% of your yacht charter price, however as this could encompass quite a range, we leave it at your discretion and ask that you offer the gratuity you think your sail guide deserves.

Will the sail guide speak English?

Our sail guides all speak English and are friendly and excellent communicators.

How much value does a sail guide add?

A fully qualified, commercially endorsed and experienced sailor, with tonnes of local knowledge to share with you. Our sail guides can show you the best places to drop anchor, snorkel and dive, swim and sunbake – and the best times to visit popular locations. They can teach you new things about sailing, help you rediscover confidence at the helm, provide an extra pair of hands and handle the heavy lifting for you.

Adrian, one of our sail guides shares:

“When my wife and I go on holidays to new places we seek out the people that can share their knowledge and experiences, giving us a deeper appreciation and understanding of their way of life and the ecosystems that they live in,” Adrian says.

“For our first trek in the Himalayas, we chose to have a guide. When we tour new exotic countries we always have a driver/guide. When you explore the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park under sail for the first time, why wouldn’t you have a guide? Oh yeah…and you get to learn how to sail too!”

For total indulgence, a hostess can also be arranged for an additional cost (please note the hostess will also require their separate cabin and to be included in the provisioning).

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3

National origin:- Soviet Union Role:- Fighter Interceptor Manufacturer:- Mikoyan-Gurevich Designer:- First flight:- 29th October 1940 Introduction:- 1941 Status:- Retired 1945 Produced:- 1940-1941 Number built:- 3,422 Primary users:- Soviet Air Forces (VVS); Soviet Air Defence Forces (PVO); Soviet Naval Aviation Developed from:- Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-1 Variants:- Mikoyan-Gurevich I-211 Operational history MiG-3s were delivered to frontline fighter regiments beginning in the spring of 1941 and were a handful for pilots accustomed to the lower-performance and docile Polikarpov I-152 and I-153 biplanes and the Polikarpov I-16 monoplane. It remained tricky and demanding to fly even after the extensive improvements made over the MiG-1. Many fighter regiments had not kept pace in training pilots to handle the MiG and the rapid pace of deliveries resulted in many units having more MiGs than trained pilots during the German invasion. By 1 June 1941, 1,029 MIG-3s were on strength, but there were only 494 trained pilots. In contrast to the untrained pilots of the 31st Fighter Regiment, those of the 4th Fighter Regiment were able to claim three German high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft shot down before war broke out in June 1941. However high-altitude combat of this sort was to prove to be uncommon on the Eastern Front where most air-to-air engagements were at altitudes well below 5,000 metres (16,000 ft). At these altitudes the MiG-3 was outclassed by the Bf 109 in all respects, and even by other new Soviet fighters such as the Yakovlev Yak-1. Furthermore, the shortage of ground-attack aircraft in 1941 forced it into that role as well, for which it was totally unsuited. Pilot Alexander E. Shvarev recalled: "The Mig was perfect at altitudes of 4,000 m and above. But at lower altitudes it was, as they say, 'a cow'. That was the first weakness. The second was its armament: weapons failure dogged this aircraft. The third weakness was its gunsights, which were inaccurate: that's why we closed in as much as we could and fired point blank." On 22 June 1941, most MiG-3s and MiG-1s were in the border military districts of the Soviet Union. The Leningrad Military District had 164, 135 were in the Baltic Military District, 233 in the Western Special Military District, 190 in the Kiev Military District and 195 in the Odessa Military District for a total of 917 on hand, of which only 81 were non-operational. An additional 64 MiGs were assigned to Naval Aviation, 38 in the Air Force of the Baltic Fleet and 26 in the Air Force of the Black Sea Fleet. The 4th and 55th Fighter Regiments had most of the MiG-3s assigned to the Odessa Military District and their experiences on the first day of the war may be taken as typical. The 4th, an experienced unit, shot down a Romanian Bristol Blenheim reconnaissance bomber, confirmed by postwar research, and lost one aircraft which crashed into an obstacle on takeoff. The 55th was much less experienced with the MiG-3 and claimed three aircraft shot down, although recent research confirms only one German Henschel Hs 126 was 40% damaged, and suffered three pilots killed and nine aircraft lost. The most unusual case was the pair of MiG-3s dispatched from the 55th on a reconnaissance mission to PloieÅŸti that failed to properly calculate their fuel consumption and both were forced to land when they ran out of fuel. Most of the MiG-3s assigned to the interior military districts were transferred to the PVO where their lack of performance at low altitudes was not so important. On 10 July 299 were assigned to the PVO, the bulk of them belonging to the 6th PVO Corps at Moscow, while only 293 remained with the VVS, and 60 with the Naval Air Forces, a total of only 652 despite deliveries of several hundred aircraft. By 1 October, on the eve of the German offensive towards Moscow codenamed Operation Typhoon, only 257 were assigned to VVS units, 209 to the PVO, and 46 to the Navy, a total of only 512, a decrease of 140 fighters since 10 July, despite deliveries of over a thousand aircraft in the intervening period. By 5 December, the start of the Soviet counter-offensive that drove the Germans back from the gates of Moscow, the Navy had 33 MiGs on hand, the VVS 210, and the PVO 309. This was a total of 552, an increase of only 40 aircraft from 1 October. Over the winter of 1941-42 the Soviets transferred all of the remaining MiG-3s to the Navy and PVO so that on 1 May 1942 none were left on strength with the VVS. By 1 May 1942, Naval Aviation had 37 MiGs on strength, while the PVO had 323 on hand on 10 May. By 1 June 1944, the Navy had transferred all its aircraft to the PVO, which reported only 17 on its own strength, and all of those were gone by 1 January 1945. Undoubtedly more remained in training units and the like, but none were assigned to combat units by then.
