Neptune 16 is a 15 ′ 8 ″ / 4.8 m monohull sailboat designed by C. William Lapworth and built by Capital Yachts Corp. starting in 1981.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

 • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
 • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

 • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
 • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

 • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
 • LOA: Length overall in feet
 • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

It is thought that this design derived from the earlier NEWPORT 16. A fixed keel version was also available. Ballast: 275 Draft: 2.5’.

Basic specs., sailing characteristics.

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Neptune 16 is 2.56, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 4.9 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Neptune 16 is about 51 kg/cm, alternatively 289 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 51 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 289 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

WindMiner Buying Capitol Neptune 16 Sailboat

My last cruiser was an Ericson 25, great boat but just to big for my type of adventure sailing. I decided to try having a sailboat that can move about in less than a foot of water so I can exciting new places.

I had been watching Craigslist for over a year and a half, looking for Oday's 19 and 20, Vagabond 17, Compac 16 (big time lust, but don't exist on the west coast) and other makes of the genre. On a thursday I see this 1981 Capitol Neptune 16 on a Highlander tilt trailer for $900 in Reno Nv., about a 2 hour drive from me. Did not know what a Neptune 16 was let alone the Capitol version. Starting researching, and got excited as the specs and hull design looked better than the Compac (was that possible). I should put in here that I will always lust for a Flicka 20 and that a lighter version of that has been my dream boat. After many years of heavy weather SF bay, Tahoe, and costal racing having a boat that is built like a little tank is a nice thing, although I had come to the expectation that I would end up with a lighter built boat.

So I called up the owner that day (Thurs) and he said that he need money, but if he sold his van he was not selling the boat (had taxes to pay). Also, he had one guy who came out to look at it the first day it was on CL (Wed.), but he could not see it to well because it was getting late and and boat was on the side of the house (no walk around room). The way he talked the first guy was letting him cool down to lower the price, he said that the other guy wanted to take it out on his next day off, which was Monday.

I have looked at a lot of boats over the last year and a half and have seen nothing but boats which were supposed to be great that were trash (un-fixable dry rot, sails that had should have been retired 30 years ago, damaged hulls which were beyond repair, ect.. ). So I tell this guy to send me closeup pictures of the boat and lower hull area, which he did. As I see the pictures I am thinking to myself, self, this looks great, I need to buy this boat. I called him back, it's now Fri. and tell him if the boat looks like it does in the pictures it's sold. I tell him I am 2 hours away so I am not coming up to look and lower the price, I AM SERIOUS and have cash in hand. I tell him that I can come up the next day, Sat. and can we do the deal after he gets off of work. He tells me to call him at 9am Sat and if the van is not sold I we can do the deal.

So it's Sat and the deal is on. I am driving up to the house and there she is, as he is getting it out. WOW. I can already see her in her finished state and she is beautiful. So I pull out 9 hundred dollar bills as quick as I can and it is mine.

I week later I see an 83 Neptune 16 on CL in Sacramento for $2500 and it's not even close to being as nice as mine. It sells in a week and a half. Double WooHoo!

She came with a lot of nice extras and the main, jib, and reefable genoa all in like new shape (potato chip crisp) and in excellent condition minus a little dirt and a couple of mold spots (which I can remove). All of the interior cushions are there and in great shape minus a little fading in places. The rudder blade has no dings and is like new. The hull has no front nicks or dings for being run into docks or rocks. It is clear that she has seen very little use, except for some gel coat cracking from the sun which will be an easy repair. Don't get me wrong there is a lot to do to get it perfect for me but the base boat is as good as I could have ever hoped for. I am sure you know what I mean.

Best regards, Rick

Newport 16 or Renken 18

I'm looking for my first sailboat for my family and I. I have never sailed and have a family of four. I have these two boats that I have narrowed my selection to. I want a boat that is roomy enough for my family, easy to trailer, and yet still have fun on. Anyone have any suggestions or information on either one of these boats?

neptune 16 I had a Neptune 16 for my first sailboat(neptune 16 and newport 16 same boat I believe), Luved the boat, sailed well, and was forgiving of my mistakes for a small sailboat. Not a lot of cabin room but overnited in it a couple of times with wife and kids (wife wasn't happy but kids luved it) Have no knowledge of your other choice. But I know the neptune was very well built...best of luck and happy sails

Renken I was looking for an open 16 footer to introduce my daughters to sailing when I ran across a Renken 18 for sale - it had been donated to a church. It taught me a lot in the 6 years I owned it, and though it was a long way from a state-of-the-art design, it suited my needs at the time. A very safe and stable sailer, its rig is simple and easy to set up - which also means that it doesn't have the tweaks that a more performance oriented boat would have. It was originally built as a "Tangerine 18" in the late 70s, then Renken bought the mold(s) and made them in '83, only to stop production because they cost too much to build. I did about 400 sails on mine and sold it for almost what I had in it, after pushing it as far as I could (rigged it for spinnaker, etc.) Because it has a stub keel it will make a goodly amount of leeway upwind, and thus is not much good for racing, but if you don't mind that drawback it is a fine boat, well built and simple. I would be happy to comment further backchannel. Check out geocities.com/renkensailboats/ for more info.

Newport 16 The Newport has a very large cockpit, easy and fast to rig, very easy and stable to sail. Cabin is too small for family overnight, but great boat for daysailing with lots of storage room in the cabin.

Are Sunbird boats any good?

 • Thread starter farginicehole

Chief petty officer.

 • Mar 8, 2004

I found a nice-looking 1996 Sunbird Neptune 201 for sale on the internet a few hours away from my house. I have not made the drive to go check this boat out yet, but have never heard of them. Does anyone know if they are well-built boats? It has a 175 hp Johnson Ocean Runner on it, and supposedly has only about 100 hours on it and was garage-kept. My main purpose would be to use it for trolling on Lake Michigan (would need to add a kicker, of course). I know all fiberglass boats are not created equally, and I'm looking for a quality rig. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Are Sunbird boats any good? i own a 1997 sunbird 200 cc powered by a 1998 johnson 150hp. boat was bought by the previous owner in '98, so it's going into it's 6th season. i like the boat, especially the price i paid. nothing sticks out as far as bad, but it is a quality boat. the electrical is a bit messy, the hatches have become loose, thru-hulls are plastic. but nothing i haven't been able to easily correct. boat is light, but runs surprisingly well in chop. i have a custom hardtop on it, which adds some weight. fully loaded with fuel and gear, i hit 42 mph. if you have any specific questions, let me know.

Re: Are Sunbird boats any good? Mattttt25,
Thanks for the reply. So do you know if Sunbird is still even making boats? Doesn't sound like you have had any problems with the glass (I just don't want to end up with a "Bayliner"-quality boat!). Where do you run this boat mainly?

Re: Are Sunbird boats any good? We own a 1997 201 Neptune and have enjoyed it. Ours has a 150hp Johnson ocean runner on it. We bought the boat new in 97 and so far have not had any major problems with it. I did have to replace the thru hole fitting that drains the livewell because it broke(plastic). Since this is the only boat we have owned I don't have anything else to compare the boat to. The boat is mainly set up for fishing has snap in cushions. We have kind of got the bug this year and started looking a deck boats. My wife would like something with a few more creature comforts such as a porta potti head and more built in cushions. I use the boat on a fresh water lake and in Galveston bay. Hope this helps you.

Re: Are Sunbird boats any good? You didn't need to with me, Bondo! I already have my opinions about those things. They are only opinions based on observations though, as I've never OWNED one myself.

Re: Are Sunbird boats any good? bondo makes it sound like there is something wrong with entry level boats. like they are crap that can't get you out on the water. if that's a fact, the majority of the boating world is in error. sorry if i chose to spend my money elsewhere this time.

my sunbird may not have the fit and finish of a gradywhite, robalo, intrepid, contender, or regulator. but it didn't cost me an arm and leg either. it performs it's function quite well. during the season i boat the chesapeake bay approx 3 times a week. i cruise and fish. the boat stays in the water all season.

pros- i like the layout of the boat. nice size, self draining fish boxes up front with the standard cooler seat. i love the hardtop (add-on), and the console has adequate storage, with all the gauges i need. the cushion package is still in good shape. although i don't use it, the integrated baitwell works well. as i stated before, the boat runs well in chop. it is also a dry boat in most conditions, much better than any bowrider or deckboat i've been on. no rot or hull problems that i can detect.

negatives- wiring is messy. although everything works, i had a hard time tracing lines when i made some upgrades to my electronics. i've had a light or two go out due to corroded connections, but they were easy fixes. wish the boat ran better in the real rough stuff, but i don't think many 20' cc do much better.

they are my personal opinions based on a boat i own. good luck-

Re: Are Sunbird boats any good? I am looking at a 1998 Sunbird Neptune Center Console 23' with a 2000 200hp Evinrude. It comes with a Long roller trailer in execellent condition, all electronics, a potty in the console. Live bait well, built in cooler all the regular stuff, ancor fire extingusher, life jackets, T-bag, T-top for 13,500. I have been looking for a boat for Cape cod bay and on good days to go farther. I go on a sea trial on Sunday. I cant sleep or shut my mind off, dont want to make a mistake buying this boat, for the $ I cant seem to find anything else in this class. Does this seem fair for what I have been reading is an entry level boat? I have a 10k budjet would love a Sea Craft of other big name boat but just a family guy trying to get out on the water. Any comments, I have been up all night thinking. Thanks,
