1980s IWC Yacht Club II “Jumbo” ref. 3312

Founded in 1868, IWC is a Swiss company founded by Florentine Ariosto Jones, an American watchmaker motivated by the combination of Swiss knowledge and American technology. 3312 IWC Yacht Club II Jumbo Quartz

A few years ago, I read Mark Manson’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. Somewhat contrarily, I didn’t find it terribly enlightening. But I do think it had one of the greatest titles of the last decade. Because everyone’s flirted with idea of embracing the carefree, that ‘stop caring, start living’ mantra you’d see on a Subaru bumper sticker or something. The watch equivalent is clear: a mechanical hardliner throwing caution and judgement to wind in favor of kindling deserved love for well-made quartz. Just as there’s a difference between a Seagull and a Lange chronograph movement, there’s a gap between G-Shock and 9F. And the 3312 Yacht Club II is decidedly toward the latter, a 80s quartz that’s equal parts Germanic and Genta. And they’re kind of insane value today.

The Yacht Club II was available both as an automatic and this buzzing electric crystal. The quartz models sold at premium and, as this was decidedly a luxury Swiss watch, most sales leaned in that direction in period. Yacht Club IIs, Polo Club SLs, and Golf Club SLs are being pulled up aggressively by the market as Ingenieurs are entering widespread watch enthusiast consciousness. 2022 was the year of the Ingenieur awakening. But the quartz models haven’t seen the stratospheric rise yet. Sure, the IWC calibre 2250 is essentially an ETA 3303 but it has perlage! And this Genta case design that can make an Oysterquartz look pedestrian on bracelet well under 10K? That’s worth noting, not even approaching modern Oysterquartz yet, particularly as this market is only just starting to get hot. And this 38mm is the full monty size-wise.

Despite how cool the H-links on this bracelet are, it was an option. The Yacht Club II was actually intended to be sold on rubber. Like much of 80s IWC, scholarship on these pieces is quite scarce. They simply were not produced in large numbers and have only just re-entered collector zeitgeist. 90s, and by association 80s, IWC is on a steep uptick of interest. This is like buying an Oysterquartz or ref. 6005 Royal Oak 10 years ago; you’re on your own, but that’s where all the fun is. I give a f*ck about a lot of things. But mechanical-only is not one of them, contrary to the name.

This one has a great case that saw a professional touch up but they did solid work. Its lightly textured black dial is undamaged, with great tritium. I really, really like these and honestly haven’t seen many this minty. It comes from a well-regarded German retailer, watch only.

The answer is obvious – “Nautilus”, “Royal Oak”, and “Ingenieur”…but for those who appreciate the not so obvious things in life, there are other captivating phrases that will send shivers down their spine. “Jumbo”, “integrated bracelet”, and “Genta” – just saying these words out loud is enough to make many people’s heart skip a beat. And when it comes to one of the ultimate dream watches, the IWC Yacht Club II – Reference 3312 is what sets the standard for many watch enthusiasts these days, if you are not looking to spend a fortune!

The 38mm version has become a favorite piece amongst collectors, with prices skyrocketing sixfold since 2020. And yet, it seems the demand for this iconic piece is only just beginning to heat up.

This 38 mm version is even more impressive with its matte black sigma dial , the solid gold bezel and bracelet links. It’s time to bring back the Mixte-Watches. The more we wear them, the more we like them.

There are many watch enthusiasts, that have already fallen in love (again) with these mixte versions. Yass, nothing beats the warmth of gold on a sunny day…

Stunning integrated bracelet (fits up to ca. 18,5cm), matte black sigma dial and a rich creamy aged lume. Perfect combo!

Although the case underwent a professional polishing in about 2012, the edges are still sharp and there are no unsightly big dents or scratches to mar its beauty.

This watch was bought in 2012 by its last owner but originates back to 1980/81.

Another rare Gerald Genta designed, second execution IWC Yacht Club 2 Jumbo in steel. The reference 3312 from around 1979/80. The 38mm steelwatch (serial 226xxxx) is in stunning condition with no signs of prior wrist-time – looks like new. Bracelet has no stretch at all. Case has sharp edges and bevels. If so it has been only slighly polished and/or refreshed. Directly out of the the collection of an retired IWC watchmaker. It has been fully serviced by him, gaskets exchanged and waterproofness tested. It´s featuring a perfect white dial with Roman indices. The IWC Quartz caliber is working perfectly as it should. The Yacht Club 2 Jumbo with it´s very flat 38mm case has almost the same wrist appearance like it´s much more common brothers PP Nautilus, AP Royal Oak or IWC Ingenieur, which are all iconic Gerald Genta creations from the 1970s.

this is the g. genta designed, iwc yacht club 2 jumbo in steel from the late 1970s. the quartz version of the reference 3211, with the smaller and rounder shaped lugs, was only designed to be worn on a leather- or rubberband, and not on a steelbracelet. it´s featuring a perfect black tritium-dial and a colormatching handset. the iwc quartz caliber 2250 is working perfectly and has just received a service from our watchmaker. the yacht club 2 jumbo with it´s superflat case has a comparable wrist appearance like a royal oak. this beautiful example, with an unpolished 38mm case, still carries all original parts and will be shipped to you on a black leather natostrap.
