Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club History and Founding

The Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club was founded in 1977 and is located on a barrier island in St. Petersburg, Florida. The club has an 18-hole golf course designed by Mark Mahannah, Sr., and his team of golf architects. The course is simply coined “Isla del Sol” by islanders and members of the community.

The original architects of the golf course were Chip Powell, Mark Mahannah, Sr ., Charles Mahannah, Jr., and Robert Walker. Mark Mahannah, Sr., was a well-respected golf course architect who designed over 100 courses in his career. He was known for his creative use of water hazards and his ability to create courses that were both challenging and enjoyable to play.

The Isla Del Sol golf course is a par 72 course that plays to 6,307 yards from the back tees. The course has a slope of 130 and a USGA rating of 69.1. The fairways are wide and the greens are large and undulating. The course is also known for its many water hazards, which come into play on over half of the holes.

I attended a class reunion here on Thurs. The facility is lovely, great view. The food was good and the wait staff very efficient.

Very well maintain, green are in a great shape and with a nice speed.

I recently had the pleasure of attending a wedding at Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club, and I was absolutely blown away by the experience. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by the breathtaking views of the ocean, which were made even more spectacular by the venue's open windows, allowing guests to soak in the serene beauty of the surrounding waters. The service at Isla Del Sol was top-notch, particularly at the bars. The bartenders were not only prompt but also incredibly friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable. It's worth mentioning the open bar selection, which was extensive and catered to all tastes, ensuring that everyone found something they loved. The food was another highlight of the evening. The appetizers were delicious and had everyone talking, but it was the dinner that truly stole the show. Each dish was a delight, perfectly cooked and bursting with flavors that left a lasting impression. The reception area itself was impressive in size, offering ample space for guests to mingle comfortably. The dance floor was spacious, allowing a large number of guests to dance and enjoy themselves without feeling cramped. The addition of multiple bar areas, including one outside, was a thoughtful touch, ensuring that guests didn't have to wait long for a drink. One of the most memorable aspects of the evening was the use of sparklers inside the venue. We just had a fantastic neighborhood Holiday party at Isla. The food and service were wonderful. What a yummy buffet of Prime rib carving station, mashed potatoe bar, pasta bar and desserts they provided for everyone to feast on. Melissa the catering Events Coordinator was a pleasure to work with.

A true gem of a club. The golf course is fun to play and the pool has the best views of Boca Ciega Bay. The gym unfortunately is small and I wish they had a few classes like spin, zumba. Pilates. But the ladies do have many active groups to join. They do need to get pickle ball and bocce courts to make this country club top rating. It will always get a 5 star rating because of the amazing views while you are dining.

Was looking to buy in the area and join but after staying with a friend. While I was there I witnessed the character of the members while playing golf. There were numerous that were just obnoxious and loud. They were playing music loudly and yelling obscenities. I also witnessed people drop or throw paper on the ground and not bother to pick it up. I've seen better manners and etiquette on public courses.

The Pool Bar offers a great grouper sandwich and a nice view on the water. Six of us had drinks and dinner outside on a perfect sunset evening. The menu offers mainly burgers and salads and has a full bar. It closes at 7:30 pm so get there early.

Isla Del Sol is a great track located right on the water before St. Pete Beach. The employees are always very kind and they definitely care about the course. Isla includes a free practice range, nice carts and a decent sized putting green. The course can be challenging if you're finding the hazards but there are a lot of easier holes and short par 4s if you're a long hitter. Their fairways are in my top 3 within Pinellas county. If you're not a good putter, I would recommend putting for 15-30 minutes before your tee time. These greens are FAST but they roll true.

Waterfront View

Not a bad place to play golf.. While away my golf pro arranged for me to play here.. Pros: greens are exceptional and true (fast) - men's clubhouse - clean... chuck was nice in the locker room... Cons: Tee Boxes please manicure this area.. I felt like I was tee'n off the fairway because the boxes were not mowed. Overall for winter the course was in good shape.. I'd definitely play when in Clearwater area... not too bad of a drive - the Grill in the property was okay..

I can easily speak to the calibre of the golf course. When my pop came in from the west coast the man said he wanted to swing the clubs a few times and had this place on speed dial at the recommendation of a friend. The course is well tended to and the pace of play is casual. Greens were in great condition (read: fast) and there was plenty of diversity between the par 5's and 3's to give your bag a workout.

As a former member of their yacht club I want to recommend them to anyone looking to join such an organization. The folks at Isla del Sol are the best! They have both yacht and golf/tennis memberships. The clubhouse is outstanding with an excellent restaurant. The pool is awesome, and the poolside bar was my favorite hangout while I was there. Their marina has what has to be the most beautiful views of Boca Ciega Bay. The only drawback is that because the marina kinda "sticks out" into the bay, the boats alongside the far wall get the best views but also all the rocking from the wakes of inconsiderate boaters who cruise by with no regard to the no-wake signs. The location is also very good, close to what I think is the best sushi in Tampa Bay (Tokyo Bay Restaurant) and they are just a few miles from Fort De Soto. That whole area is just gorgeous. When I retire, this is where I'm coming to live. I never played golf or tennis, as I was only a yacht club member. For reasons unrelated to the club I decided to dock my boat closer to Tampa, but I can say I was very sad the day we had to leave. I highly recommend these folks as they are as good as it gets!

Yuck this place sucks! Its full of rude snooty people! I went there once and a worker was being a jerk! He told me to take off my hat but he said it in a rude way. Also wen I went it was raining off and on so they had a snail problem! I don't think people want to see snails climbing up and down a wall while pulling up to this snooty club. Over all this place is a horrible place!

I have been here golfing three times with friends and we absolutely love this course. It's a great layout, in great shape in a very scenic setting. We'll be back.

Pinellas County Golf Courses are some of the best in Florida. If you are considering golfing in the St Petersburg Florida area you are in for a delightful surprise.

Beautiful Pinellas County

Pinellas County is located in Tampa Bay on the west side of Florida. Pinellas County offers a wide choice to travelers with a plethora of golf courses throughout the county. This area is full of sunshine all year.

For this reason, St Petersburg is known as the “Sunshine City” for having held the record on 361 consecutive days of sunshine. While temperatures can be hot and semitropical, this area boasts some of the best gulf-coast beaches with coastal breezes.

Originally I traveled to St. Petersburg in the late 1960s with my Father. At that time he was trying to help his elderly uncle sort out his life. As a teenager, I wasn’t very enchanted with the area as I surmised at the time that it was a haven for old people and wheelchairs. Boy has that ever changed!

Fast forward some 60 years and you will now find the most upscale vibrant city on the Gulf Coast . It is also minutes away from some of the most beautiful white sandy beaches in the world such as Pass-a-Grille Beach and St Pete Beach for sun lovers such as myself. Then throw in the large updated, Tampa International Airport (TPA) for easy access and you have a mighty fine place to live or visit.

Putting this all aside I have to mention one of my favorite passions is golf. My husband and I are avid golfers and part-time boaters, so we were striving to find a club that could check off our boxes meaning golfing and boating.  

Although South Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg have lots of water, a few developers managed to squeeze in a few private golf courses on the very limited land which was available.  My husband and I decided to visit local golf courses to determine which was the best for us.

Golf Courses in Pinellas County

There are a total of 43 Pinellas county golf courses. Of those 43, ten of them are private courses that require a paid membership.

Additionally, there are three short par 3 courses which include: Cypress Links Golf Course, Twin Brooks Golf Course, and Pinecrest Golf Course.

St. Petersburg Country Club | Budget Private Course

General information.

St. Petersburg Country Club was built in 1924. Located in one of the older neighborhoods near downtown St Peterburg, it is full of deep history.

Some of this history includes Sam Snead and Ben Hogan who played here years ago. The course was designed by architect, Herbert Stong, a professional golfer with the Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Kent, England.

It is surrounded by lovely old oak trees and plenty of wildlife, just what you would expect from an old Florida course. The layout is pretty straightforward, which is good for all handicap levels.

Currently, the greens, fairways, and tees could use work. The club amenities include a pool, fitness, tennis, and a driving range.

Vinoy Golf Club | Best Hotel Golf Course

Vinoy Golf Club 600 Snell Isle Blvd NE, St. Petersburg, FL 33704 (727) 896-8000 Course Details: 18 holes – 6,590 yards, par of 72

The Vinoy Golf Club is an 18-hole golf course originally created by John R. Van Kleek, and re-designed by Ron Garl. Polish up your game with this 18-hole par 71 course that challenges most avid golfers. With its Moorish-style charm, this is one of the most beautiful clubhouses with an upscale dining and pro shop.

This superb country club on Snell Isle is affiliated with the Vinoy Renaissance Hotel in downtown St. Petersburg, FL. The course is challenging with lots of water holes and tight fairways. It is well maintained with an outstanding staff.

The amenities include a pool, driving/chipping areas, a new golf simulator, tennis and fitness clubs.

The downside of joining this impressive club is competing with hotel guests and having a higher membership fee. However, if you’re coming to play as a hotel guest , you’ll certainly enjoy it. Located on the edge of downtown St Pete, there is plenty of things to do nearby .

Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club

Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club is conveniently located in Southern Pinellas County heading towards St Pete Beach. It is just slightly north of Tierra Verde FL . Here at this private member club, you can enjoy a waterfront world-class private establishment .

Isla Del Sol offers a first-class 18-hole golf course, yacht club, tennis courts, waterfront dining facilities, a private fitness center, and a beautiful pool overlooking Boca Ciega Bay!

The Isla Del Sol Yacht Club is a deep water marina in the Bay. The yacht club mooring has been recently renovated and has 76 slips that can accommodate yachts up to 65 feet.

The Isla Del Sol Tennis Club consists of nine lighted, Har-Tru Courts and a pro shop. They offer summer youth camps, clinics, round robins, active singles and doubles competitions, and other events held throughout the year.

The Isla Del Sol Golf Course was originally built in 1977. The 18-hole Isla Del Sol golf course features 6,392 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71 . It was designed by Mark Mahannah, ASGCA.

The 12th and 18th holes were recently revamped in 2022. The pool restaurant and bar also underwent major upgrades with a new bar on Boca Ciega Bay, outside fire tables, and new seating areas.

The golf course is in great condition and has well-groomed greens. Although not the longest course in the group it makes up for it with its subtle breaks of the greens and the layout of the fairways.

This club is reasonably priced and offers some of the friendliest members to be found. For a private membership, we found this to be the best bang for your buck. However, we found the food not to be as desirable as some of the other golf courses in the area.

Pasadena Yacht & Country Club

 The Pasadena Yacht & Country Club is situated in Southern Pinellas County, centrally located minutes from downtown Gulfport and a short-drive from downtown St Petersburg or Treasure Island. The Country Club offers a peaceful, beautiful atmosphere on close to 300 acres of subtropical landscaping.  Located off Boca Ciega Bay you will experience refreshing breezes, beautiful sunsets, and more at this premier club.       Pasadena Yacht and Country Club is a private Member club with top quality amenities. Here they have hosted PGA & LPGA golfing events. Celebrities known to have played there include Babe Ruth, Arnold Palmer, Walter Hagen, Michael Jordan, and Babe Dedrikson Zaharias.  

It has all the amenities as the country club above and also its own harbor. It was purchased in 2016 and since then there have been wonderful improvements. Members are thrilled with the newer high standards and beautiful new amenities.

The golf course has been heavily renovated; the pool and clubhouse have had many improvements. Although we have not tried their food, our friends claim the Pasadena Country Club has some of the best food in the area.

Feather Sound Country Club

Feather Sound Country Club is located centrally in Pinellas County between Clearwater and Saint Petersburg FL.

This beautiful family-friendly club offers a Joe Lee Signature Championship Golf Course and clubhouse. Originally it was established in 1974, and since then has maintained being one of the premier private member clubs.

Feather Sound Country Club underwent major renovations in 2022 for their fairways, greens, and clubhouse.

Belleair Country Club

The second-best golf course in Pinellas County is the Bellaire Country Club. This is another class act with two courses to choose from West and East golf courses.

Belleair Country Club began in 1897 when Henry Bradley Plant, founder of the Plant railroads and steamboats built his golf club here. With elevated greens, which he made from crushed seashells was a standout, and remains so to this day.

While the golf course has undergone major changes and renovation over the years, its superior quality is steadfast. I recently had the privilege to play the West Course, and had an amazing time.

Located on Clearwater Bay overlooking Clearwater Beach and it has lush green tropical courses. The Belleair Country Club has everything from golf and tennis to incredible chefs with bountiful quality food, and wonderful entertainment. The management team is also superb and the staff provides excellent service.

Pelican Golf Club | Best Luxury Golf Course

Pelican Golf Club is one of the newest luxury private golf clubs in Florida. It hosts the annual LPGA Tour’s Pelican Women’s Championship. Pelcian Golf Club is the best golf course in Pinellas County (St Petersburg & Tampa area).

The golf course features a 1925 design by Donald Ross. In those days, it was known as Belleview Biltmore Golf Club. It was updated by Beau Welling in 2018.

The spectacular course is an homage to Augusta National, with gorgeous white-sand bunkers, lush green turf, and pine straw around the holes. The Pelican Golf Club greens provide a fun and unique challenge for professional golfers as well as club members.

The Pelican Golf Club is owned by the Doyle family, locals to Pinellas County.

I recently played this golf course in a local golf tournament and was super impressed with the overall quality and maintenance. However, this luxury golf course comes with a luxury price tag. Be prepared, golf membership fees are rumored to be over $100,000 at Pelican Golf Club.

Best Public Golf Course in St Petersburg FL

There are a lot of public golf courses in Pinellas County. The best public golf course is Mangrove Bay and Cypress Links. These two public golf courses are 18-hole and 9-hole golf featuring a driving range, pro shops and snack bars.

Note: Mangrove Bay Golf Course will be closed from May through October 2022 as they resurface putting greens and the practice green.

I tried golf once and didn’t have much luck. Perhaps visiting one of these golf courses would help improve my skills. Lessons are probably in order.

Spending time in the beautiful green golf clubs does look fun! I have never spent much time on golf courses until covid hit – then the locals ones to us opened up to allow people to walk around them… It is a good sport for allowing you to walk around the greens!

They are lovely gardens but I think I might always prefer wilder nature compared to manicured golf courses, but these courses in Pinellas County are lovely.

Isla del Sol’s outdoor ceremony space offers a private beachfront and gazebo.

• $2,200 Diamond Ceremony Package (Includes officiant and sailboat sunset departure for the couple)
• Includes bamboo folding chairs, white carpet runner for the boardwalk, full beach manicuring and raking services and complimentary water station.

The Cocktail Hour:

Indoor and outdoor spaces that both provide views of the Bay with access to our 180″ built-in bar!

The Reception:

The Boca Ciega Ballroom provides panoramic views of the Bay, while accommodating 250 guests or less with an oversized built-in dance floor.

Modern Black and White St. Pete Wedding | Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club

We wanted the ceremony to be on the beach and were both set on that. Originally, we looked into getting married at St. Pete Beach, but soon realized we wanted it to be more private.

Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club offered its own private beach, which was perfect, and also offered a lot of in-house services, which we also really loved! We loved the beautiful private beach, large bar area, and beautiful outdoor space and reception/ballroom.

The service was incredible from the very start. Melissa was such a joy to work with, and I wish I could plan another wedding with her.

Tropical Pastel Waterfront St Pete Wedding | Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club

We wanted a venue near the water that was not going to be packed with beachgoers. It was very important to us to have everything we needed in one place.

Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club was amazing! As soon as we saw the ceremony spot and its proximity to the water, we knew that we wanted it. You're standing 40 feet from the shore by beautiful boats, and the best part is that there is no one else around.

The venue also offers a reception space, cocktail hour space, and getting-ready rooms. The seated dinner was amazing, and the food options were 100 times better than other venues that only offer basic wedding food. We had mahi mahi, grouper, and steak on our wedding day. I could go on and on about how amazing the venue was.

Tropical Waterfront St Petersburg Wedding | Isla del Sol Yacht Club

We really wanted somewhere with a water view, but without actually being on the beach. We also needed somewhere that could hold 130-160 comfortably. Being somewhere in a fun downtown area or beach was also a must.

When we first met Melissa at Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club, we knew it was the place! After touring the entire venue, we were in love with it all and knew it was perfect for us. Melissa answered questions so promptly and was such an incredible resource throughout the entire wedding planning process. She made everything so relaxed and exciting at the same time! The service the day of was phenomenal. The head server was so incredibly kind, the bartenders were amazing, and we’ve heard multiple comments about how nice and accommodating the servers were the night of the wedding.

Romantic Dusty Blue St. Pete Beach Wedding | Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club

One of the most important elements of our wedding was the venue. We wanted a venue that would be unforgettable but that also fit all of our needs. We wanted a venue that exemplified Florida’s beauty, but we also really desired privacy and seclusion. We wanted to be the only couple getting married at our venue on our wedding day, which is surprisingly hard to find in the Tampa Bay/St. Pete area. We desired a beautiful reception space that overlooked the water, in addition to a dance floor that fit our dancing needs! When we came upon Isla del Sol Yacht & Country Club, we felt like we had found a hidden gem.

When we first visited Isla del Sol, we immediately fell in love with its beauty. We knew that the private beach with the gazebo would be a perfect place to exchange our vows. After exploring other venues, what attracted us the most to Isla del Sol was the privacy and exclusivity. We would be the only couple getting married on-site on our wedding day. This stood out to us in comparison to other venues. In addition, we loved that the venue included many different elements of our wedding that we didn’t have to establish on our own.

Aside from the venue providing food, beverage, and rentals for our reception, the venue also offered a ceremonial package that included an officiant and a month of wedding planning, which we were more than pleased with. Moreover, Isla del Sol was affordable. There was no venue fee, only a minimum that had to be met. This made Isla del Sol stand out in comparison to other Tampa Bay venues.

As far as service, Melissa’s hospitality could not be overlooked. Whenever a question arose, we would reach out to Melissa, and a response would always be returned quickly and with a smile. On our wedding day, the entire Isla del Sol staff was extremely attentive to us and helped to collaborate a smooth day of events. Isla del Sol provided private locker rooms on-site for the bridal party to get ready in the morning. The private beach, reception space, dance floor, and bonfire following the reception made for an exceptional wedding day.

Intimate St. Pete Elopement | Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club

We wanted something on the beach without literally being on the beach if you know what I mean. We also needed somewhere that would photograph well and have lots of different settings for pictures since it would be a short and sweet day.

We chose Isla Del Sol because of the beautiful location and convenience of where we live now. It had a tiled walkway so I wouldn’t have to walk in the sand in heels as I didn’t want to go barefoot, and the gazebo with the palm trees made for stunning photos. Their service was absolutely amazing. Their wedding coordinator was so sweet and helped everything go smoothly the day of. There was an indoor area for my husband and me to wait in the air conditioning while our guests arrived and got seated. They also had an indoor backup area to do the ceremony in case of inclement weather, which took away the stress of worrying about the afternoon Florida thunderstorms.

Dusty Blue and Red St. Pete Beachfront Wedding | Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club

I really wanted a ceremony on the beach, but it's hard to have a private beach ceremony. This was the first part of Isla Del Sol we loved. I also wanted some sort of indoor and outdoor option so that we could be inside for our reception but enjoy the outdoors for our ceremony and for pictures. Lastly, I wanted to work with people that seem easy and accommodating. you end up spending a lot of time with the people who are helping you with your wedding so it was super important that when I went on a tour for a wedding venue I felt welcomed and that people wanted to assist and help! Planning a wedding is confusing!

My friend had gotten married a year or two before me and when I saw her pictures I immediately fell in love!! I asked her where she got married and I found out it was Isla Del Sol. I went on a tour with my mom and she loved it too. I only went on ONE tour! I only went to Isla Del sol and I right away knew that is where I wanted my wedding. I specifically picked it because of their ceremony option to be on a private beach, their ballroom area is big and also so gorgeous when it's decorated up, and it seemed like we really get so much and it is a good value for everything you get to have a wedding there. When I found out we could go on a private sailboat after the ceremony that made me think I definitely NEED my wedding here!
