Luxury on the Waves: The Largest Yachts in the World

The largest yachts in the world are more than just a testament to wealth — they represent the pinnacle of luxury marine engineering and cutting-edge design. Welcome to the world of superyachts where we’ll take a look at the world’s largest yacht and the biggest sailing yacht on the seven seas.

Vast suites, gyms, pools, discos, helipads, ballrooms and even state-of-the-art science laboratories. No, we’re not talking about the world’s biggest hotels, we’re talking about the largest yachts in the world. These water-bound wonders, furnished in the finest décor, and studded with every conceivable amenity that an ultra-luxury lifestyle demands, push the boundaries of physical possibility and encapsulate the true meaning of extravagance.

The contenders for the title of world’s largest yacht is a journey through meticulously curated interiors, awe-inspiring exteriors, and groundbreaking technology that not only breaks the waves but also the norms of luxury. So, prepare to dive into an ocean of extravagance where indulgence knows no bounds.

Read on to find out which is the biggest yacht in the world by length.

Length : 96.5 metres | Tonnage : 2,991

Launched in 2016, Faith was built in the Netherlands by Feadship and is powered by twin 3,100 hp diesel engines with a top speed of 31 km/h. It’s believed the superyacht cost somewhere in the region of $200 million. It may not be the biggest yacht in the world but it’s one of the most opulent, with teak laid decks, a grand piano, beach club, underwater lights, cinema, beauty salon and a lift.

Length : 127 metres | Tonnage : 3,300

Koru, the Māori word for ‘new beginnings’, is believed to be the world’s biggest sailing yacht. Costing a reported $500 million, the schooner-rigged sailing yacht was built in the Netherlands and will be followed by a 75-metre support vessel carrying relief supplies, a helicopter and crew accommodation.

Length : 138 metres | Tonnage : 7,841

Rising Sun was built at a reported cost of $290 million in 2004 by German shipyard Lürssen. It was later extended by eighteen metres to ensure it was longer than Octopus, another of the world’s largest yachts. The 8,000m2 superyacht’s 82 rooms include a beauty salon, gym, sauna, wine cellar and basketball court.

Prince Abdulaziz

Length : 147 metres | Tonnage : 8,233

Built by Danish shipbuilder Helsingør Værft in 1984, the Prince Abdulaziz was, when it was launched, the longest and tallest yacht in the world. Almost four decades on, it remains one of the largest yachts in the world. The interior was designed by David Nightingale Hicks and it’s believed that the main lobby is a replica of the reception area of the Titanic. It cost a reported $184 million and includes a hospital and cinema.

Length : 162 metres | Tonnage : 13,470

Costing around $400 million, the Andrew Winch-designed superyacht was once the biggest yacht in the world before being eclipsed by Eclipse. With a capacity for 115 guests and 88 crew, Dubai has 1.2 million litre diesel tanks, a range of 15,700 kilometres and is home to a disco, cinema, squash court and a lobster tank.

Length : 162.5 metres | Tonnage : 13,000

Designed by award-winning superyacht designer Terence Disdale, Eclipse was built in Germany by renowned shipyard Blohm + Voss. When it was delivered in 2009, it was the biggest yacht in the world. It’s believed to have seventeen staterooms and what has been described as a ‘palatial master suite’, as well as one of the largest swimming pools ever built on a private yacht. At a reported cost of $500 million, Eclipse is equipped with a submarine, three landing boats and two helipads.

Length : 180 metres | Tonnage : 13,136

The world’s largest yacht was built by Lürssen in 2013. Costing a reported $600 million, Azzam’s luxurious interior, which includes a 29-metre long main salon, was designed by Christophe Leoni to evoke the Empire style of the nineteenth century and it can accommodate 36 guests and a crew of 80.

The Pinnacle of Luxury

The magic of these yachts lies not only in their extraordinary dimensions, but also in the exceptional attention to detail, bespoke design, and unparalleled luxury they offer. From private cinemas to onboard hospitals, these vessels encapsulate an almost surreal level of opulence that truly redefines the concept of marine luxury. These floating palaces have changed the landscape of wealth and grandeur, constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Whether it’s the Empire style glory of Azzam, the remarkable expansiveness of the Eclipse, or the exquisite allure of Faith, each one of these yachts embodies a world of unbounded luxury that floats on the rhythm of the waves. But beyond the extravagant indulgence, these vessels are also a testament to human ingenuity and engineering prowess.

The largest yachts in the world are more than just symbols of superfluous wealth — they are epic engineering projects that encapsulate the zenith of design, technology, and nautical mechanics, all while riding the crest of the boundless ocean.

The World’s Most Exclusive Marina – Marina di Portofino

By Catriona Cherrie

Open 365 days a year, with bookings taken all the way until summer 2019, Marina di Portofino is one of the world’s most exclusive and sought-after marinas for superyacht owners and VIPs.

Located in Genova, Italy, the marina lies at the edge of a colourful and picturesque postcard village which itself sits within a natural promontory, or perhaps a projected bit of a land over a body of water. One gets the impression of discovering a secret cove or island paradise when first pulling into the marina from the Ligurian Sea.

Marina di Portofino has many services available for superyacht owners who have managed to bag themselves a spot in the exclusive marina. There are 14 mooring places for pleasure boats and superyachts and two berths for yachts over 60m. The marina services are numerous and of the highest standard; from dry cleaning services to a well-stocked village grocery. There is also a fantastic onboard delivery service of wine and fine foods for all superyacht berths.

Rising to fame in the 1950s by the iconic song ‘Love in Portofino’ composed by Fred Buscaglione, the charm of the historic Portofino village captures all who visit there. From the Gothic Oratory of Santa Maria Assunta to the pastel coloured villas and divine restaurants that spill across the cobbled courtyards, the exclusive seaside town has lost none of its original allure, despite the designer shops and bomb-proof security that is well in-force.

Portofino is a magnet for tourists and VIP travellers seeking peaceful and uninterrupted views across the Italian Riviera. With only 420 citizens, the village is a private haven for those seeking a private holiday get-away from prying eyes; looming hills close off the marina and village from the rest of the area.

Dine at Belmond Splendido Mare’s excellent Chuflay Restaurant which spills out on to Portofino harbour or at La Cantina, a succulent seafood restaurant on the secluded strip of beach named San Fruttuoso. Navigate the narrow corridors along the original coloured floors of the Portofino streets to find the hidden designer boutiques like Gucci and Luca. For the most breath-taking view of the bay and the village, climb up to the church of San Giorgio and the castle Brown at the crown of the tallest hill above.

Portofino is an incredibly luxurious and tranquil destination for those superyacht owners who have the patience to wait for a berth to become available throughout the year. It is clear why there is such high demand for a spot in the calm, cool waters of the Marina di Portofino.

Italian Coast - Portofino

While away the hours in this discreet, luxury hideaway, where humble fishing boats bob next to superyachts, and refined hotels perch on rugged cliffs. Its privileged location on the peninsula heightens its exclusivity – no surprise that stars like Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor used to holiday here in the sixties. pORTOFINO – Top Yacht Charter Destination

From Monterosso al Mare in the Cinque Terra region, you will sail north to reach Portofino. The roll call of famous people who have visited Portofino over the past two centuries attest to its seductive charms. It includes Guy de Montpassant, the famous 19th-century French author, as well as German philosopher Nietzsche. Movie stars dazzled by its beauty and who often visited for its seclusion included Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Grace Kelly and Humphrey Bogart. Today you can spot the likes of musicians Rod Stewart, Beyoncé, Jay Z, Avril Levigne and Chad Kroeger, and actor George Clooney.

Portofino seems to encapsulate that elusive quality of authentic glamour and elegance that is so fascinating and appealing. It oozes understated chic: think upmarket party venues, live bands, luxurious boutiques, and the best of traditional and gourmet restaurants.

PORTOFINO – The Gourmet Experience

Taste mouth-wateringly fresh anchovies, pesto made of just-picked pine nuts, locally grown veal, fresh local herbs — the food offering in Portofino is out of this world. But before you tuck in, why not try a famed Bellini cocktail (a mixture of Prosecco sparkling wine and peach purée) on the terrace of the Hotel Splendido while delighting in the views of Portofino from above. It’s an absolute must when white peaches are in season.

Ristorante Stella, the waterfront establishment serving some of the freshest seafood you will ever taste, is famous for its fish ravioli and plump mussels. For the non-fish eaters, there are plenty of other delectable dishes, made with homegrown produce, to sample. Their wines, desserts, service and ambience are truly world-class.

Da u Batti, which is slightly off the beaten track, is the place to escape for some peace and quiet when the waterfront becomes congested in high season. Their Scampi a la Portofino with langoustines and giant prawns in their secret signature sauce are major drawcards.

If you share the belief that the best restaurants to visit in a tourist hotspot are the ones frequented by locals, then Da u Batti is the place to go. You’ll see a lot of Italians here, though it’s unlikely you’ll be the only tourist in the restaurant. Da u Batti does have something of a cult following.

The list of favourite Portofino restaurants would be incomplete without Tripoli: think sea view, pesto lasagna, fish skewers, pine nuts and anchovies… It’s a real feast for the eyes and the palate.

PORTOFINO – Things to Do

But Portofino is not just a catalogue of stunning views and foodie delights. Open-air picnics, natural wonders, bird watching and hiking are just a few of its other attractions. Did you know, for example, that it is located in the middle of a protected area, with abundant wildlife and lush vegetation?

Portofino is a natural masterpiece. The mountains are spectacular, the air is clear and invigorating, the water is aquamarine, and the bougainvillea blooms are vibrant pink and purple… It truly is a slice of paradise.

It offers rather unique attractions, too, such as the submerged statue of Christ, found 15m below the sea level. Christ of the Abyss is one of the major diving attractions in the area, as are its shipwrecks, fish and unique red corals. Scuba diving off Portofino not only leaves you awe-inspired but will overwhelm your senses.

In Portofino everything is a sensorial experience, among the scent of the sea and those of the marine flora there are also the typical scents of the Ligurian food and wine Culture, the fragrance of fresh Focaccia baking, the scent of freshly basil, freshly caught fish and of the citrus and aromatic notes of the Vermentino.

Among the several and famous international Brands, there are also numerous artisan shops and small boutique of food and wine specialties, which will surprise even the most demanding Guest.

Uncontaminated and luxuriant Nature.

Portofino’s Natural Park has been preserving and protecting the extraordinary beauty of the Territory (flora, fauna and landscape) since 1935.The promontory, with its 610 m of height, extends for 1056 hectares; its 80 km of panoramic paths allow to reach sites of particular historical and naturalistic interest such as the Old Traffic Light, the Batteries, Punta Chiappa, the Gassetta’s Mill, San Fruttuoso Abbey, the Monastery of Niasca and the splendid Village of Portofino.

An ancient Charm

It’s an ancient military Fortress located in an elevated position at the entrance of the Bay. Excavations carried out in the area have revealed the remains of a Roman era watchtower, dating back to the II or II century A.D. It’s believed that the Castle has been built around the X century. Thanks to its strategic position, it was often besieged and suffered attempts of occupation by Saracen Pirates, until the early years of the XV century. Over the centuries it was enlarged and remodeled. Since 1961 the Castle has been owned by the Municipality of Portofino which has carried out a conservative restauration and its destination as cultural events seat.

Among Sky and Sea

The parish Church dedicated to San Martino di Tour is located in the oldest part of the Village. It is believed that it was built in 986 A.D. in Lombard- Romanesque, replacing a primitive Chapel located on the dock. In the same Year, Queen Adelaide, widow of Emperor Otto, donated it to the Monks San Fruttuoso Abbey; this obedience was later confirmed with an Edict of 1130 by Pope Innocent II. In 1548, on the occasion of the discovery under the shelf of the main Altar of a box containing Relics of the holy Martyrs Dorotea, Cassiano and Vincenzo, the Church was solemnly consecrated. Subject to various changes, the current structure is the result of the reviews carried out at the end of the XIX Century.

A jewel perched on the Sea.

Saint George’s Church is a small Temple built step to on the suggestive Cliff of the promontory. Almost oval in its shape, with altars and marble floors, the Church is dedicated to Saint George Martire and, from 1154, year of its first building, until today, it was destroyed four times by wars and the same times it was rebuilt. Inside are kept Saint George Relics, the ex-votos donated by Sailors in the last Century, and some precious paintings, even if several Works have been lost.

A breathtaking View

The Portofino Lighthouse of Portofino is located on the slopes of the Mount, at the entrance to the famous Bay. It can be reached through a small path surrounded by emerald-green vegetation, and once reached, the view is breathtaking for the Visitor’s eyes. Also we mention the beautiful submerged Cliffs of great naturalistic value where various types of gorgonians, red coral and numerous species of fishes can be admired.

A dip in the crystalline clear Water

A small free beach, in one of the most fascinating marine protected areas in the world, where marine species proliferate in harmony with the Visitors.

Christened Storm and Portofino, the two newcomers both feature a highly optimized and efficient hull designed by Lateral Naval Architects. (All Simply Custom yachts have the same hull, in fact.) Each vessel also offers an impressive gross tonnage of approximately 2,500 to 2,700 GT. Spread across five decks, the living quarters offer ample space for entertaining and seven guest cabins. (The owner’s stateroom is located on the upper deck, while the six guest suites sit on the main deck.)

Storm and Portofino will be cleaner, greener cruisers, too. Low-emission propulsion is a major focus of the Simply Custom series, with each yacht powered by hybrid diesel-electric systems. “This architecture will be the one common thread across all the designs,” Oceanco’s Paris Baloumis told Robb Report last October. “We’re also designing it so that future propulsion technologies, when they become available, can be retrofitted into the design.”

The two yachts have clear differences, though. Storm is characterized by a sleek, aggressive profile that “combines the elegant, flowing lines of a timeless Bentley coupe with a tapering aft end, giving that sense of speed and elegance from a bygone era,” according to H2 Yacht Design ’s founder and creative director Jonny Horsfield.

Oceanco H2 Yacht Design Portofino Superyacht

Portofino, on the other hand, reflects the classic style of its namesake Italian fishing village. Horsfield says the yacht’s timeless design is contrasted by “ruthlessly modern” detailing, such as a flared bow and a dramatically shaped transom. Other hallmarks include a sculpted superstructure, tapered decks, and glass bulwarks.

“Both designs are flexible enough to accommodate any client preferences,” Horsfield adds.

To that end, the Simply Custom series is designed to simplify (and speed up) the customization process for owners without sacrificing quality. Sounds like a win-win.

Marina di Portofino is the most famous harbour in the world, a symbol of beauty and exclusivity, it is nestled in the ancient fishing village charged with history. Today, Portofino is one of the chicest, trendy and romantic tourist destinations of the Italian Riviera (or Liguria).

Founded under the Roman Empire and named “Portus Delphini” after the dolphins that inhabited the coast, the small seaside town of Portofino, nestled in the heart of a natural park of the same name, is the most prized destination in the world for luxury yachting. Marina di Portofino is actually a natural harbour with spectacular scenery. From the promontory, the view of the marina and the city is exceptional. But Portofino reserves many other pleasures for its visitors, like strolls in between its houses with coloured facades, or the exploration of the crystalline depths of its marine reserve. The town is home to several luxury hotels, gourmet restaurants and trendy bars lining the famous “Piazzetta”, where it is nice to sunbathe on a terrace.

In the middle of the natural peninsula formed by the entrance to the harbour, Marina di Portofino forms a crescent moon around a quiet pool and can accommodate 220 boats and yachts, but the place is very limited. The majority of vessels that can berth in the port do not exceed 12 meters in length, although there are some posts for units up to 22 meters. Its main dock, Molo Umberto I, has 14 berths for larger units. Furthermore, it is possible for two Megayachts up to 70 meters long, to anchor in Baia Cannone. In order to properly receive more yachts, 3 anchorage zones and 2 floating jetties 0.3 nautical miles outside the harbour have been designed to comply with ISPS security standards.

Take a sneak peek at the biggest and most expensive boats at 2024's Palm Beach yacht show

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.
