Meet Frontier, the 325-Foot Expedition Yacht That Will Break Through Ice Packs in Style

Click here to read the full article.

In 18th century Australia, the term “frontier” became synonymous with the territory beyond civilization, where danger and adventure simultaneously resided. It was a place where only the intrepid ventured into. Superyacht designer Sam Sorgiovanni used the definition in a similar way for his new 325-ft. concept expedition yacht, Frontier, infusing it with the soul of a true explorer .

Unlike many modern explorers that look tough but are more like paper tigers in the outback, Frontier has a reversed ice-breaker bow that allows her to travel to remote waters of the Arctic or Antarctic in comfort and safety, but still look stylish in warmer, tamer climates.

Sorgiovanni also gave Frontier white upper decks and dark teal exterior that carries through from the aft expedition end of the yacht to the owner’s and main decks. Frontier also has a unique helicopter landing platform. “Mounted on hydraulic jacks, the platform is able to slide out to receive the helicopter and then retract once the helicopter has taken off,” he told Robb Report . “When retracted, the platform serves as an extension of the pool sunbathing area aft and can be used as a dance floor or even a second gym to the primary gym, which is located aft of the bridge deck.”

The garage was designed to hold two 80-ft. primary tenders, with the option for two 50-ft. hovercrafts, two more 25-ft. tenders, and four jet skis.

Beyond exploring polar reaches, Frontier was designed for recreation in every other area of the world. She has an outdoor bar and Jacuzzi on the observation deck, a 30-ft.-long swimming pool on the owner’s deck, and two-story beach club with spa, beach club and bar.

Sorgiovanni drew inspiration from his native Australia when selecting the interior materials. The team chose natural and sustainable materials, including fast-growing woods, local stone, tree bark and even egg shells.

“Australians have a casual lifestyle that focuses on the sea, sand and climate,” he says. “This translates so well to life on a yacht—this yacht, in particular, perfectly depicts the wish of being close to the elements in a relaxed way, with a taste for discovering unknown lands.”

Frontier has accommodations for 12 guests in six double cabins and 34 crew in 17 cabins. The interior also features a cinema, dining room for 20, as well as an observation lounge on the forward section.

Still in the concept stage, Sorgiovanni expects to attract proposals from shipyards to minimize her emissions through more advanced propulsion systems as she gets closer to being built. “ White Rabbit G for instance, which I designed, has a diesel-electric drive that burns approximately 40 percent less fuel than normally needed on an equivalent volume monohulled yacht,” he says, adding there are other ways to make the yacht more eco-friendly. “There are non-toxic hull antifouling coatings with non-biocide-release that protects marine life; solar panels, LED lights, and an eco-friendly dynamic positioning system for the yacht to drop anchor away from fragile coral reefs,” he says.

The designer also expects to see more explorer yachts like Frontier on the water over the next decade. “These long-range displacement vessels offer excellent sea-keeping and spacious accommodations, and they’re suitable for long periods of living onboard,” he says. “They also provide an ideal platform for modern hybrid propulsion systems.”

Many owners, Sorgiovanni says, want the best of all worlds in modern expedition yachts. “It’s the same as a car,” he says. “Would you rather buy a four-wheel drive or a sports car? The ideal answer is both.”

Welcome to the new frontier.

Crystal Sailing Yacht Concept

The inspiration behind Coquine Design ’s latest sailing yacht concept is crystal clear.

The shiny new 325-footer, christened Crystal, features geometric glazing that mirrors the faceted edges of a gem. This allows the schooner to catch the light like a crystal while cruising the high seas.

Beyond glitzy aesthetics, Crystal’s engineering is fairly next-generation. The vessel is fitted with a three-mast DynaRig sailing system that has famously appeared on Perini Navi’s 289-foot Maltese Falcon and Oceanco’s 350-foot Black Pearl .

The innovative computer-controlled sail system is based on freestanding carbon masts and yard-arms into which the sails furl. The major selling point is that it allows for easy sailing in all sea conditions. The studio hasn’t listed Crystal’s estimated top speed, but Maltese Falcon and Black Pearl can soar to 25 knots and 30 knots under sail, respectively.

Crystal Sailing Yacht Concept

Crystal’s living quarters are designed to “follow nature.”  Coquine Design

Perfect for transatlantic voyages, Crystal offers a generous amount of space both above and below deck. Coquine’s creative director Christian Leyk says the living quarters “follow nature” and are designed to maximize natural light while creating strategic shading.

In terms of layout, Crystal can accommodate up to 12 guests and sports a full-beam owner’s suite with fold-out balconies. Alexandre Thiriat has been tapped to spearhead the interior design. Again, there are no details yet, but we’re picturing Lalique chandeliers, Baccarat stemware and other lavish crystal furnishings. Hey, who doesn’t love a theme?

As for amenities, seafarers can enjoy a sizable wine cellar, a beach club, a gym and a number of different lounge areas. The yacht comes with a large garage forward, too, which can hold your tenders and toys.

This is the second concept that Leyk has penned in as many months. In July, Coquine Design unveiled a family-friendly 160-foot explorer inspired by the children’s film Octonauts and the Caves of Sac Actun . One has to ask what will the studio think of next.

Boat of the Week: This Historic 325-Foot Superyacht Hosted JFK, Winston Churchill, and Elizabeth Taylor

Not many yachts surpass famous owners’ reputations, but Christina O has. Once owned by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, the 325-footer’s history is nearly as outrageous as the lives of the rich and famous who walked its canopied decks. From Onassis’ torrid love affair with opera singer Maria Callas to his subsequent marriage to Jacqueline Kennedy, Christina O has facilitated some of history’s most extravagant maritime tales.

Acquired by new owners in 2023, the floating starlet is ready to embark on a new chapter as a charter vessel. “When people come on board Christina O they typically have an emotional reaction,” says Tim Morley, whose firm Morley Yachts, charters the vessel.  “People love it—and it affects almost everybody in this way, young and old.”

It wasn’t always a glamorous superyacht. The vessel started out as Canadian Navy Frigate,  HMCS Stormont , built in 1943 by Vickers of Montreal. It played an active role in World War II. In 1952, Onassis acquired it for $34,000 as part of a block purchase of ten ships that he intended to convert into a fleet of whaling vessels. When plans fell through, he kept Stormont for himself, spending $4 million (or about $46 million in today’s dollars) to convert it into a luxury superyacht—the first true gigayacht. He lengthened the hull by 29 feet and named it Christina after his daughter.

No expense was spared for its rebirth. Powered by steam engines that delivered a top speed of 21 knots, the yacht was equipped with five fast launches, a glass-bottomed boat for underwater observation, a small dinghy, two kayaks, a Fiat 500, and a five-seater Piaggio P.136L-2. (This was the same seaplane that crashed in 1973, killing Onassis’s 24-year-old son Alexander.)

Christina was one of the few yachts of its time to have an elevator, not to mention a surgical operating theater with radiography equipment. The mosaiced swimming pool also broke molds, with a minotaur-themed lifting floor that converted into a dance floor.

Onassis lived aboard for many summers, cruising the Mediterranean. His yacht became a coveted destination for the world’s elite. It was distinguished from other vessels not only by its size, but by its graceful exterior and matching balconies on either side of the wheelhouse.

A close-knit group of Onassis’s friends and family partied alongside powerful figures and stars of the silver screen, including Marilyn Monroe, Margot Fonteyn, Frank Sinatra, the Rockefellers, the Rothschilds and Paul Getty. Ex-King Farouk of Egypt referred to the yacht as “the height of opulence.” The guests were entertained in reception lounges that are now famous with whispered stories.

The wood-paneled Jackie O Lapis Lounge on the main deck—named after a lapis-lazuli fireplace rumored to have cost a princely sum of one dollar per square centimeter—is stocked with rare books and a self-playing electric piano. The fake El Grecos that Onassis hung during his ownership—“If people want to believe they are authentic, why spoil their pleasure,” he once quipped—have been switched for real masterpieces by Renoir, Le Corbusier and Chirico.

Adjacent is Ari’s Bar where orca teeth serve as armrests for stools and are engraved with scenes from Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey . Wood from a sunken Spanish galleon was used for the bar. On the walls hang portraits of John Wayne, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, all guests aboard the boat.

Christina was also a place where Onassis conducted business, thanks to the network of 42 telephone lines across the boat. John F. Kennedy and Winston Churchill had their first encounter on the yacht. Britain’s wartime Prime Minister enjoyed eight voyages between 1958 and 1965 and was the only guest for whom Onassis gave up his own suite. The Library is named in his honor.

The amidships master—the Onassis Suite—remains largely intact. Its original office with a Louis XV desk is today a private lounge with a Renoir hanging above the marble fireplace. The ensuite has a large shower and marble bathtub, though not the original mosaiced blue Syene marble bathtub that Onassis commissioned.

The 16 additional guest cabins are named after and inspired by Greek islands. The Ithaca suite was Christina’s cabin, which she surrendered to Greta Garbo, Maria Callas and Jackie Kennedy (prior to her marriage to Onassis in 1975) whenever they visited. They each feature wood, marble and gold bathroom fittings. The pastel color schemes were selected by Jackie O, who was renowned for her restoration of the White House.

Maria Callas embarked on a nine-year-long love affair with Onassis in 1959. The Maria Callas Lounge contains her original grand Steinway piano. Her wedding rings from her first marriage and a solid silver Tiffany dish presented to her by JFK are displayed by the entrance, and the entire collection of her operatic recordings are available to play. For film nights, there is a remote-controlled projector.

After Onassis’ death in 1975, his daughter gifted the boat to the Greek government and a slow deterioration ensued. In 1999, a new owner, Onassis family friend John Paul Papanicolaou, undertook a sizable refit estimated at $50 million that replaced 65 percent of the steel hull. He also renamed the vessel Christina O .

Subsequent refit work from 2016 to 2018 added an aft deck bimini system and a boarding platform for easier guest transfers. Two sets of Vosper stabilizer fins were installed, along with cold rooms, an incineration chamber and garbage compactor for the lower deck galley. A split-level Jacuzzi deck now overlooks a bar and large dining table with intricate marquetry inlays depicting the tales of Ulysses.

The original steam engines were replaced with two 2,775-hp MAN diesels, rendering the yellow funnel redundant. It’s now used to store the HVAC system and has a “Callas stage” at its base for open-air concerts. The changes in the layout freed up enough space to add a grand dining room that can accommodate 42 guests and a second Steinway.

A pair of restored mahogany HackerCraft tenders sit alongside original features, such as the circular staircase with its onyx and silver handrail, vintage wall lights and leather settees.

The vessel has recently been a case of life imitating art. Christina O played a starring role in the Netflix series  The Crown and 2022 comedy  Triangle of Sadness . The 1956 wedding reception held on board for Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly was echoed in 2019 when supermodel Heidi Klum was married on board. Most recently, Rupert Murdoch chartered the yacht in July for a family reunion in Positano, Italy.

Other amenities include a spa with two full-time therapists forming part of the 38 crew and a chest of water toys, including an inflatable slide and Flyboard. Those weren’t toys that were available when Onassis acquired the vessel and turned it into a superyacht, but one imagines he would’ve approved.

Christina O can be chartered around $768,500 per week with Morley Yachts.

ABOUT THE 325 GTO

The Galeon 325 GTO is a 32-foot, outboard-powered sportsboat that was launched by Polish yacht-building company Galeon in 2021. Crafted in collaboration with renowned naval stylist Tony Castro, this sleek and contemporary hardtop vessel went through three years of painstaking design work to produce a thoroughly modern yacht packed with innovative features and sportscar-like handling. What’s more, the 325 GTO’s wide beam of almost 11-feet has allowed Galeon to formulate a revolutionary new layout across this boat’s deck, while a fold-out bulwark that turns into a cocktail terrace makes this one of the smallest yachts ever to boast an aft-beach club. With many Galeon Yachts for sale on the market, let the expert team at SI Yachts assist you in your search for the perfect pre-owned vessel.

SPECIFICATIONS

  • Beam 10' 11
  • Displacement 18,856 lbs.
  • Engine Manufacturer Mercury Verado
  • Fuel Capacity 224 gallons

The 325 GTO features a recessed foredeck with a Bowrider-style forward lounge featuring a hook-shaped leather sofa, where you can spend hours in secluded bliss benefiting from both direct sunlight and shelter from spray. Towards the rear of the boat, meanwhile, there are a pair of swimming podiums either side of the engines and, of course, the much-prized fold-out cocktail terrace to port that is big enough to host four close friends. The aft-cockpit area also includes a SureShade awning, a pair of dining sofas surrounding an extending table, as well as a 32-by-78-inch wet-bar console with an electric Kenyon grill, a microwave and chilled storage. As an optional extra lucky owners can choose to install a raised sunpad above the engines for stern-facing sunbathing, while fishing aficionados can fit this area with a livewell, bait lockers and even a rocket launcher.

There is no division between inside and out on the main deck, and open aspects to the rear and side are joined by a light-weight carbon fiber roof and crystal-clear windshield glazing at the front for a sun-filled and elemental atmosphere. At the front of the cockpit there is a racing-inspired helm station with Raymarine electronics and display screens, a backlit dashboard, a joystick, a DPS virtual anchor system, trim tab controls, a pair of adaptable helm chairs, VHF radio and a door to the side-deck.

A watertight companionway door leads down to the lower deck, where there is enough room to transform this yacht from a dayboat into a true weekend cruiser. An open lounge lined in grey beechwood boasts a dining table and a U-shaped sofa that can be quickly and conveniently turned into a bed, while to stern there is a snug double cabin. Also located on this level is a main head with granite counters, a porcelain sink and an open shower fixture.

A pair of 400MHP Mercury Verado outboard engines fire the Galeon 325 GTO to speed top speeds of over 45 knots, with comfortable and efficient cruising clocking in at around 31 knots. Should you choose to leisurely glide across the waves at the slower pace of 8 knots, however, you can expect a horizon-busting range of around 240 miles, more than enough to extended weekend cruising. This yacht’s broad hull proves incredibly agile when out on the water, while owners can also choose to add a Seakeeper stabilizer system to the boat for reduced roll while at anchor.

325 ft yacht

An offshore cruiser with all the necessary cruising DNA and comfort built in.

Designed by stephen jones, the gt325 has been conceived to quench the thirst for a fast, robust, safe, modern coastal cruiser..

The brief was to put a modern twist on Stephen’s highly successful and much heralded Sadler 290, with twin keels for exploring shallow waters and beaching. A single fin keel is an option.

Designed as Category A, the GT325 is a British built sub-10 metre yacht that can take the ground. With the added flexibility of twin keels, the yacht is an awesome coastal cruiser, with berths for up to 6, but 4 very comfortably. Many months of design and concept development have been brought to bear on this design and the result is something quite special, and far exceeds anything else on the market at this size in terms of what the boat offers the owner.

At GT Yachts, the ability to sail well, safely and comfortably is first and foremost. This starts at the bow with an integrated bowsprit, anchor locker, and generous bosun’s locker which accommodates fenders, outboards as well as sail covers etc. The locker can be kitted out with soft hooks, ladder steps and, if necessary, shelving.

The forecabin is designed as the master, with an exceptionally large berth rarely seen even on a 40ft yacht with comfortable arrangements for a couple as well as an ensuite heads option. With overhead hatches as well as hull ports, the natural light is plentiful. The saloon area with panoramic windows has a dining area that can comfortably seat six and offers a further two full length berths with stowage and shelving. There is an option for a bulkhead mounted fold-down chart table.

Aft and to port is a large C shaped working galley. An area that can be both easily used to serve the saloon table, as well as the cockpit outside. The galley has been designed with the work of a cook in mind, a proper galley one might say, with the tasks of preparing, cooking and serving food as a process. There is provision for a microwave, and incredibly for this size of yacht a front opening fridge designed to open so as not to lose the contents whilst heeled under way.

To starboard is the heads compartment, situated aft which is rare at this size of yacht, if not unheard of. The location provides easy access to the heads and oilies locker while underway, the oilies locker being actively ventilated using the airflow provided by the mechanical air intake for the engine compartment.

The aft cabin to starboard is a very good sized second cabin for a 10-metre yacht, with a choice of either a full double berth or twin singles. With plenty of stowage, the cabin offers a comfortable, naturally lit space with windows to the side and aft through the transom.

Propulsion is via saildrive, and in the engine room there is space for a conventional diesel engine or electric/hybrid installation with extending range generator and extra batteries.

Outside aft, the fully enclosed cockpit with six-foot-long seating port and starboard of the central island, is a great space. Dining out here is very comfortable and the seating is ergonomically designed to maximise comfort under sail, with good height coamings providing proper back support. When helming there is seating aft to port and starboard and a fantastic central perch when steering standing or on the centreline. Plenty of options for the helm to move positions. Whilst there is an option for a tiller, the wheel is positioned on a centreline pedestal with an optional large head with plenty of surface available for instrumentation.

At the stern, boarding is via integrated ladder and there is a drop-down swim platform which, when closed, creates the fully enclosed, safe and seaworthy cockpit. A large, deep, well-lit locker to port with side and aft windows.

Sheeting is led aft and easily controlled, the main being via the “German” main sheet system with winches to hand port and starboard, and the sheet bridle or optional track sited forward of the companionway, out of the way.

With wide side decks and meaningful bulwarks running the full length of the yacht, the decks are a safe place to move around on. Forward there are areas to relax away from the cockpit with flat areas designed to accommodate cushions.

An inspired living area

The GT325 is designed around the living space; a large and very comfortable forward cabin, a chef's dream of a galley and saloon and dining area that will provide many relaxing evenings at secluded anchorages.

Sailing Simplicty

The deck of the GT325 has been designed with simplicity in mind. All control lines led aft, choices of self tacking or sheeted foresail and tidy German mainsheet system. The upshot is a simple and straightforward rig, driving a Stephen Jones slipper hull, all making for a wonderful sailing experience.

2021 Galeon 325 GTO

  • By Michael Verdon
  • Updated: April 27, 2021

Galeon 325 GTO carving turns offshore

We ran Galeon’s first-ever outboard-powered boat, the 325 GTO, from the MarineMax dealership in Sarasota, Florida. The new GTO (Grand Touring Outboard) will be the smallest of a series that goes up to about 50 feet. With MarineMax as its national dealer, Galeon has become a player in the 40- to 68-foot motoryacht categories. But the Polish builder had already won multiple awards for models such as its 500 Fly created by super-yacht designer Tony Castro.

Galeon 325 GTO helm

Interior and Accessories

The 325 GTO offers a few yachtlike wows courtesy of Castro, like the foldout side panel that opens up the cockpit and offers instant water access. The prototype also came with the Comfort Pack and Luxury Pack options, including interior and exterior LED lighting, a stylish helm console with twin Raymarine Axiom 16-inch screens, a Fusion sound system with eight speakers from bow to stern, a SureShade awning, and a cockpit galley with fridge, Kenyon stove and microwave.

Galeon 325 GTO dining area

The Galeon’s sense of space shows in multiple ways. This includes 80 inches of headroom in the helm area. On the outer edges of the twin 350 hp Mercury Verados are 28-by-60-inch platforms that let you walk beside the motors without having to do a sideways shuffle. The bow area, measuring 7 feet, 6 inches along the starboard gunwale, easily fits four adults. The cabin has a large forward berth, and the second berth aft is queen-size. The head, a generous size with stylish touches such as a circular porcelain sink, feels like it should be on a larger boat.

Galeon 325 GTO head

Sarasota Bay was blustery that day, and because a front had just passed through, the already-shallow bay seemed shallower. We ran the boat hard, up- and downwind, doing tight turns and figure eights. The 325 GTO handled the chop well and felt comfortable across the speed curve, with no excessive bow rise. Top-end was 42.8 mph at 6,250 rpm. Galeon noted that our prototype is heavier than production models, and also that the strakes would be modified. Both changes should improve speed and efficiency. Overall, this is a strong contender boasting a fold-down side.

Galeon 325 GTO with foldout panel

How We Tested

  • Engines: Twin 350 hp Mercury Verado
  • Drive/Props: Outboard/14.5″ x 15″ Revolution 4 stainless-steel 4-blade
  • Gear Ratio: 1.75:1 Fuel Load: 110 gal. Water on Board: 11 gal. Crew Weight: 550 lb.

High Points

  • Yachtlike fit-and-finish includes Beechwood Grey joinery and cabin flooring, plus intricate upholstery stitching.
  • LED lighting in the interior, cockpit (including in the aft glass door) and under the hull lets you turn off the main lights and bask in a soft, blue glow.
  • Deep, square-shaped bow serves as a private nook.
  • More grab rails are needed in the cockpit and belowdecks. Galeon is working on it.
  • Trim tabs extend beyond the transom. Galeon says it will recess them on production models.

Toughest Competitor

Check out Scout Boats’ brand-new 350 LXZ ($551,546 with triple Mercury 300 Verado AMS V-8s with joystick). It’s rated for more horsepower than the Galeon, but does not offer a foldout side platform that enhances cockpit space.

GT325 review: a little different

  • Theo Stocker
  • September 5, 2023

A boat that dares to do things differently, the GT325 blends elements of the old and the new to remarkable effect. David Harding reports

325 ft yacht

Product Overview

  • Fast, stiff and well-balanced | Exceptionally roomy layout | Deep sheltered cockpit
  • No chart table as standard | Narrow door to aft cabin

Price as reviewed:

There seems to be a consensus that all new cruising yachts look the same, but I would defy anyone to say that about the GT325. That’s because she is different – very different, in all sorts of ways.

Like most modern cruisers, the GT325 has a broad stern. If you only saw her stern-on, you might imagine she was at least 36ft (11m) long. In fact she’s just 31ft 3in (9.53m) on deck, making her one of the few tough, sporty cruisers in this size range.

The broad stern is balanced – properly balanced, in hydrodynamic terms – by an unusually broad bow for a cruising yacht. Stopping short of being even a semi-scow shape, it nonetheless incorporates scow-bow thinking, being a fuller version of the flying bow seen on many of Stephen Jones’ earlier designs, going back to his half-tonners.

For all her performance pedigree, the GT325 is very much a cruising yacht. She just happens to incorporate up-to-the-minute thinking that makes her unusually fast for a cruiser of her length – and especially of her weight – and unusually roomy too. Combining space with pace has always been a challenge when designing cruising yachts, and the GT325 was conceived and designed to offer both in abundance.

325 ft yacht

A sensible width in the cockpit means you can brace your legs across to the opposite seat. Photo: David Harding

Somehow she also manages to combine a high-volume hull with surprisingly attractive lines. That’s no easy trick to pull off. She looks modern without being remotely trendy.

So what exactly is the GT325, and where does she come from? Well, regular readers will recall that we introduced her in YM last year when hull No.1 was being built. She’s the first new boat from the re-born GT Yachts, whose GT 35 I tested back in 2014.

Her pedigree dates back to the Starlight 35 and 39, which I knew from their birth having been working in the sales office at Sadler International when Stephen Jones produced the drawings for what was initially known as the Starlight 38.

Article continues below…

GT 35

GT 35 – Yachting Monthly review

Can British upstart GT Yachts take on Europe's established luxury cruisers? Graham Snook sails the new GT 35 to find

A Sadler Starlight 35

Sadler Starlight 35: a solid 35-footer

Duncan Kent examines the enduring appeal of the Sadler Starlight 35 and discovers a yacht that is a delight to…

Fast-forward 14 years to the launch of the Sadler 290 in 2003, and we find a new, smaller boat that embodied the Starlight philosophy: a fast, capable cruiser with a lead keel – or keels in this case because most 290s were twin-keelers. Mounted on moulded stubs to ensure an exceptionally low centre of gravity, they allowed the 290 to carry plenty of sail for good performance in light airs, and they also made sure that she had the power to perform in a blow.

The next reincarnation of the Starlights, again designed by Stephen Jones, was the GT 35 in 2014. GT Yachts was formed by Conrad Cockburn, a naval architect and chartered engineer who fully appreciated the potential of the Sadler/Starlight approach and, with Jones, brought it right up to date. A superb finish and a large splash of luxury were added to the 35 for good measure. I was not surprised to find that she performed exactly as her pedigree suggested.

Evolution in action

So obvious were the attributes of the GT 35 that plans were drawn up for more boats in the range, including a smaller version that would be an evolution of the Sadler 290. Sadly, the logistics involved in out-sourcing production didn’t stack up and GT Yachts had to put everything on hold. Then, last year, the company found a new investor and set up its own production facility at Mercury Yacht Harbour. A new yacht was announced too, in the form of the GT325. The moulds for the 35 still exist, but a smaller model was chosen to re-launch the GT brand because it’s almost as big down below within a significantly shorter hull.

Essential requirements of the GT325 – apart from speed, power, stiffness, space and easy handling – were that it would have a deep, sheltered and fully enclosed cockpit, a choice of fin or twin keels, a choice of wheel or tiller steering (because people who appreciate a boat like this might appreciate the benefits of a tiller), plenty of deck-stowage and a master forward cabin that few, if any, sailing yachts of similar length could match.

The overlapping headsail is an alternative to the self-tacker, sheeted to tracks on deck. Photo: David Harding

It also had to be tough and properly engineered. For example, bulkheads are located with structural bonding and then glassed directly to the deck and to the vacuum-infused hull. Vinylester resin is used throughout the hull laminate. The keel stub (or stubs) are integral to the hull moulding and incorporate fibres that run as continuous laminates from one side of the hull to the other. Substantial frames and carbon-reinforced stringers are also laminated into the hull and through the stubs, which incorporate sufficient radius where they join the hull to avoid structural compromises caused by sharp angles.

You can feel the solidity of the GT325 when you step aboard. Her rock-like steadiness is partly because of her 12,500lb (5,650kg) displacement. If that sounds heavy for a 31-footer – and she’s no lightweight – bear in mind that she has a waterline of nearly 30ft (9.50m) and 570 sq ft (53m2) of sail with the standard mainsail and self-tacking headsail. In-mast reefing on the test boat inevitably reduced both the area and efficiency of the mainsail, but was chosen on the basis that it will be a popular option. Sails are by Sanders in Lymington.

325 ft yacht

A double bow roller is a practical feature all too rarely seen on coastal cruisers. Photo: David Harding

Balancing the smaller main was the overlapping headsail, which gives 43ft (4m2) more area than the self-tacker at the expense of a wider sheeting angle – the tracks are on the inboard side of the decks because the design and shape of the coachroof doesn’t allow them to be mounted on the top. This hardly seemed to hold her back upwind in brisk conditions. You could always rig up inhaulers if you wanted to.

As with the Sadler 290, twin keels are expected to be the most popular option on the GT. Weighing 1.2 tonnes each and bolted to the bottom of the moulded stubs, they give a ballast ratio of over 42% and keep the weight as low as possible. You simply couldn’t make a boat like this work in the same way with iron keels. You also have the reassurance of knowing that, if you hit something hard, lead has that little bit of give.

Paper and practice

It was hard not to approach the test of the GT325 with high expectations. Given that we wanted to let the boat show what she could do in a decent breeze, we waited until we were reasonably confident of getting one. Fortunately we did: it started at around 12 knots gusting to 18, picked up to 18 gusting 24 and later died to 9 gusting 12, so we had a good range of conditions. A north-easterly in the central Solent meant mostly flat water and very shifty winds.

Comfortably carrying full sail with well over 20 knots of wind across the deck, the GT showed that she’s a powerful performer, though of course de-powering is easier in flat water. We suspected that most cruising sailors might not push quite so hard and, in any event, Stephen (Jones, who joined us), suggested we would be quicker with a couple of rolls in the main as the wind continued to build.

325 ft yacht

The full-sectioned flying bow offers internal volume and balances the broad stern sections. Photo: David Harding

While the helm remained light, and keeping the boat on her feet was no great challenge, we were inevitably sailing along an increasingly fine line. Life became easier with less area in the main and we were faster too: our speed picked up from mid-5s to high-5s. When the breeze dropped later on, we still maintained 4.7 knots upwind with just 10-12 knots over the deck.

With a twin-keeler, it’s worth bearing in mind that the grip from the keels increases as the boat heels. The rudder’s grip diminishes at the same time, moving the centre of lateral resistance (CLR) forward and leading to more weather helm. The relative positions of the CLR and centre of effort (CE) will have been taken into account at the design stage, so all you need to do is to remember that, with twin keels, reefing the mainsail before the headsail is often the best solution.

Balancing act

We had to push the boat hard to provoke her into rounding up. That’s largely because of the balanced hull form, the full bow sections countering the effects of the broad stern. This is where the balance of the hull, rig and foils all come together, in this case creating a boat that’s crisp, light and responsive to sail. And she’s no slouch: cracking off a few degrees took our speed up to 7.5 knots. Upwind, despite the wide headsail sheeting angle, we consistently tacked through around 85° on the compass.

Unlike the Starlights and the Sadler 290, but in common with the GT 35, the GT325 has a rudder blade from Jefa. It was nicely balanced and loaded up gently yet progressively as we neared the limits, giving plenty of warning before letting go. By contrast, the blade on the 290 is firmer, with a limpet-like grip. The rudder was working in undisturbed water, thanks to the feathering propeller. It would be sacrilege to have a fixed prop on a boat like this.

325 ft yacht

A broad stern and high-volume hull reflect modern thinking, but the GT still has attractive lines. Photo: David Harding

Control of the rudder is via a 48in (1,200mm) wheel. Although it’s big enough to allow a comfortable perch outboard and a good view forward, I would choose a tiller. A drag-link, as on the Rustler 33 (another of Stephen’s designs) would move the tiller abaft the rudder-head. That way, the forward end of the tiller would be only just forward of where the pedestal is with the wheel steering.

On a boat that’s designed as a coastal cruiser, where you’re going to be hand-steering much of the time, why not treat yourself to the versatility and direct responsiveness of a tiller? So many boats these days no longer give you the choice.

Cockpit comforts

Forward of the helm, there’s a comfortable perch on the outboard side of the cockpit coamings from where you can lean back against the guardwires. Should you prefer to sit inboard, you will find an unusually well-protected cockpit. The seats are fairly low with high backrests that are nicely angled. You also have a low fixed windscreen, à la Hallberg-Rassy.

325 ft yacht

Plenty of ports and windows make the saloon bright and airy and help show off the nicely finished joinery. Photo: David Harding

It’s unusual in the cockpit of a broad-sterned boat these days to be able to brace your legs across to the opposite seats. You can do that here because the cockpit is a moderate width, making it secure and allowing the side decks to run all the way to the stern.

Primary winches for the overlapping headsail (upgraded on our test boat to Andersen 40s) are on the coamings, next to the Andersen 34s for the German mainsheet system. The traveller, forward of the companionway, is controlled by lines that will be led to cleats at the aft end of the windscreen. The bifurcated backstay is tensioned with a winch handle.

325 ft yacht

Few, if any, performance cruisers of the GT’s length can boast a forecabin anywhere near as spacious as the one on this boat. Photo: David Harding

Moving along the deck, you find substantial bulwarks and plenty of non-slip on the coachroof. In the bow is an enormous deck locker (or bosun’s locker, as GT like to call it) for fenders, downwind sails and whatever else you choose.

GT325 below decks

As on the GT 35, the light oak finish is impressive. Equally impressive is the amount of space. The galley, to port by the companionway, is out of the way and somewhere you can wedge yourself securely. GT Yachts are particularly proud of the front-opening fridge that’s mounted athwartships so you can open the door on either tack without spilling the contents.

325 ft yacht

To port, by the companionway, the practical galley is not in a thoroughfare. Photo: David Harding

Also worthy of note is the enormous forecabin with its hull-side ports and space for a second heads if you want. The primary heads is to starboard abaft the saloon and forward of the double cabin (with twin bunks as an option) in the stern. Getting in and out of the aft cabin is a bit of a squeeze due to the narrow door; a compromise in the interests of achieving full-length saloon seating and a roomy heads.

Handholds and detailing are good, though the test boat was still awaiting a few finishing touches such as the odd door and some locker catches.

The GT325 is a remarkable boat in a number of ways. We haven’t dwelled on the space below decks, but she really is vast given her hull length of just over 31ft. The layout works at sea as well as in harbour and, that apart, it’s a comfortable, bright, airy and welcoming space in which to spend time surrounded by nicely finished joinery and neat detailing. Modern boats sometimes seem to waste much of their substantial volume, so it makes a refreshing change to see the space both above decks and below used as intelligently as it has been in the GT325. Here’s a British-designed and British-built fast cruiser that’s easy and fun to sail and that undoubtedly offers more in her modest length than you will find in many boats a good deal longer.

A perfect combination of family friendly amenities and fishing features. Family overnights to offshore fishing, I haven’t found anything it can’t do.

I just got this boat and it rides like a dream. It handles wind and waves extremely well. We went for a cruise yesterday with cold and wind and felt so comfortable. My wife and I both realized that this opens so many more opportunities to enjoy our boating and fishing.

I purchased my Pursuit from Legendary Marine in Destin from Kevin Harvey. Kevin did an amazing job of listening and learning what I hoped to get from my boat experience in the coming years and Kevin's product knowledge absolutely nailed the right boat for me and my family. We could not be more pleased and Kevin is to be thanked for that. Our training on the boat has been handled by Captain Megan Gaster and she is so professional, knowledgeable, & patient...always available for training us!

Our new 2023 OS325 has the quality and style we expected when when we ordered it. Our previous Pursuit answered the mail on everything so we bought this one to replace it.

From Ocean Blue Yacht Sale to Pursuit Factory the process was incredibly smooth even with a stickler to detail like myself, both the the dealer & the factory did a great job. I look forward to finalizing all the other benefits that are offered with a purchase of a Pursuit and the backing they supply.

I had been looking for a family boat that I could use for cruising, serious fishing and also that could be trailered. I was seriously considering Boston Whaler until I met a friend who introduced me to his Pursuit. I was immediately impressed by the quality of the boat and all its features. I then met a great person at the dealership that helped me all the way through sea trial. So far I am very happy. Great boat!

We didn’t set out to buy a boat the day that we walked into Bosun’s Marine in Mashpee MA, let alone a brand new boat that wasn’t even completely built yet!! We met Derek Pratt (our salesman) and he showed us the Pursuit 325 OS. We fell in love and ended up ordering a brand new one that was currently being built. 2 months later and we had taken ownership. This boat over delivers for fit, finish, performance, and comfort. We will enjoy this boat for years to come!!

Have owned three Pursuit boats and this boat has exceeded my expectations. My wife has not been a person who enjoyed boating so much in the past due to the other Pursuit boats being center-console types with no protection. She now enjoys trips on this boat with all the protection and amenities. Our family and friends love to cruise around with us on the weekends and make stops along the way at restaurants & anchor up at sandbars enjoying the comforts of this boat.

It’s not all about the money, do your homework and get what you pay for. Pursuit is simple the best off shore mid size sport cruiser boat on the market. It’s just that simple..

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.

The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.

Mark Zuckerberg.

The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.

Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.

The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.

There are several outdoor areas where the social media maven will be able to relax with his family and the indoor levels feature glass paneling allowing for tons of natural light.

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.

The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.

The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.

The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.

Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.

Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

Mark Zuckerberg reportedly rewarded himself with a luxurious gift: a $300 million super yacht.

The billionaire Meta Platforms CEO reportedly purchased the 287-foot vessel with the name Launchpad, according to The Sun and New York Post.

FOX Business reached out to Meta Platforms and a Zuckerberg personal spokesperson for comment on the vessel.

WEATHER ALERT

Fort lauderdale police officer wounded in shooting at hotel; suspect dead, officer was released from the hospital thursday evening after sustaining non-life threatening injuries.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – There was a massive police presence in Fort Lauderdale’s Harbordale area Thursday morning after a city police officer was shot.

It happened in a hotel room at the Holiday Inn Express at 1500 SE 17th St., according to police.

Police Chief Bill Schultz said just after 7:30 a.m., a caller reported that he had killed someone inside of a hotel room.

Officers entered the room and exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who barricaded himself in the room, Schultz said. He said one officer was struck by gunfire.

The suspect, who police identified as Karl Chludinsky, 46, of Margate, was found dead inside of the room by SWAT officers, according to Fort Lauderdale police spokesperson Casey Liening.

Liening also confirmed that the wounded officer was released from Broward Health Medical Center on Thursday and is expected to make a full recovery.

A second officer was injured and treated at the scene but was not shot, Schultz said.

Watch the police news conference:

Sue Riggs, who was visiting Fort Lauderdale for the first time, told Local 10 News that she immediately went into hiding after hearing the gunshots nearby.

“I jumped up and went into a men’s room right there and it is all concrete and steel,” she said. “We couldn’t figure out why they knew he was there in that room. That makes sense.”

Hotel guest Luis Castaneda said he and a group of bystanders were directed by a police officer to a nearby conference room for safety.

“She was like, ‘Everybody, get into this conference room!’ They put us in there, they locked it and turned the lights off.”' she said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the police shooting. The three officers who opened fire are on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Schultz said.

Local 10 News went to Chludinsky’s home to speak with family members about the incident but no one answered.

Neighbors say he was going through a bit of depression following a recent divorce but are still shocked this happened.

“I would’ve never expected anything like this. He was always a sweet man toward us,” a woman said. “Even though he was going through some hard times, you could tell he was trying to push through.”

A Broward County arrest photo from 2019 shows Chludinsky after he was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and drug possession.

Police said a motive for the shooting remains unclear at this time and stressed that there is no threat to the community.

One person was taken to a hospital Thursday afternoon after authorities say a boat crashed into the Sanibel Causeway.

Hailee Seely, spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said the crash happened around 3:30 p.m., when authorities received a report of a single-vessel accident near the southwest side of the Sanibel Causeway.

The FWC, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Coast Guard and Lee County EMS responded to a 24-foot vessel that collided with the rocks near the bridge, Seely said.

The vessel's sole occupant is being treated for their injuries. The extent of the injuries remained unknown Thursday evening.

Nicole Groll, spokesperson for the U.S. Coast Guard, said initial reports indicated two boaters crashed their vessel into a jetty, but later learned it was only the one boater, who was with EMS.

The crash comes less than a week after a boat crashed in North Naples , killing two.
