Looking Back At The Ship’s Cafe

The Ship Café Restaurant and Marina was an Ocean City landmark for over 30 years. Constructed in the late 1930s as the Ocean City Yacht Club, it became the town’s premier restaurant in the years following World War II under the ownership of William and Ethel Ahtes.

The Ship Café was also famous for its marina and yachts from all over the East Coast made use of its deep harbor. For a time, there was even a small airstrip on the property on the bay at 14 th Street.

In the mid-1970s, new owner Pete Boinis created the Gazebo Niteclub at the Ship Café. It became a popular disco and featured music by the Admirals, one of the area’s top show bands.

The building was destroyed by a massive fire on May 9, 1977. The Harbour Island development was built on the site and today the weigh-ins for the White Marlin Open are held there each August.

Decided to dine at the Yacht Club for the first time during their first night of reopening from a January break. We live in the Pines part time but never had eaten there other then listen to music during the summer. We went with another... couple and all our meals were fantastic. Crab cake, filet mignon, seafood alfredo and fresh catch of the day of Mahi mahi were prepared excellently. The cream of crab soup was loaded with crab meat and the salads were excellent. It was 1/2 price entree special for a Friday night which was a bargain. Service was outstanding and will definitely return. More

During stay-at-home orders, we ordered Easter Dinner from Ocean Pines Yacht Club. Family dinner for 4 included ham, turkey, veg, mashed and sweet potatoes, gravy, baked apples, rolls and dessert....for $40!!! It was delicious!

I've supported the Yacht Club since the relaunch by the Orth Co. Almost always great. Last month, my wife and I were served drinks in plastic cups at an inside table. When I questioned why, the server blew me off saying they were out of... glass. When I noticed everyone else getting glass, I asked again to be blown off again .When I pressed the matter, she brought me a clean glass for my wine. Last evening, my wife and I ordered "Summer Steamer Pots" that were served without sausage or corn. The server said she would get some sausage but then returned to say they had none. How can they offer a meal that isn't as described in the menu without giving a chance to order something else? Again, after pressing the point, we were offered a free desert. I now have to ask how my drinks and food will be served before ordering.. I had visited the club six times in the last three weeks. More

The Ocean Pines Yacht Club food and dining experience is wonderful. The crab cake sandwich was full of crab meat and broiled perfectly. The service was friendly and efficient. Came in for an early dinner and no wait during August—amazing. Loved the free, live music... as well in the evening. Best part —So wonderful to be able to avoid the crowds of Ocean City and have a beautiful view of the bay for dinner at a reasonable price. More

Our weekly lunch bunch chose this place yesterday. We were underwhelmed. Their version of a Scotch Egg should not even be on the menu. Those who had flat breads were satisfied. The spinach salad was a hit. I enjoyed the meatball sandwich, but the pulled... pork was over cooked and very dry. Our server, Courtney, was a delight. Doubt that we will go back. So many restaurants still to explore. More

My husband and I went here for dinner during the pandemic for outdoor dining at the recommendation of a friend. We had no idea it was open to the public. What a pleasant surprise! We were seated under an umbrella and had a wonderful view... on a beautiful night. We started with a house salad which is very large and probably could have been split between us. I enjoyed my first ever coconut crush while waiting for my meal and highly recommend it. My husband chose the lobster roll for his meal with the asparagus and corn relish on the side. He did not use the relish. I decided on the mahi mahi sandwich with tropical salsa and opted for the sweet potato fries. Both were excellent choices and I must say that the sweet potato fries were probably the best I have ever eaten. We did not have room for dessert. We will definitely be back on our next trip to Ocean City. More

We sat outside, next to the moored boats, at the tiki hut bar. Not-very-comfortable benches by a long shelf that isn't quite roomy enough for meals. South Korean short ribs were tasty but not very plentiful. Very good zrinks and I can drunk when I'm... drive. M'date had a crab dish that she enjoyed very much. A calm, beautiful night and parts of Ocean City are lit and visible across the Isle of Wight Bay. We'll return, be more careful of the drinks and be thankful it's only two miles from our home. More

I've lived in this community for 5 years. When the Matt Ortt Group took over this fledgling venue, they amp'd things up. Changed the menu, the atmosphere and my opinion of the place. It sits on a beautiful location overlooking the skyline of Ocean City... Maryland. Consistently, the food is excellent, the staff is over the top and the atmosphere is fun. I'm there every Friday evening for happy hour and dinner in season and weekends when they have live music. Love the place. More

Stopped in for a quick lunch. We were very pleased. It was a quiet, rainy Thursday, not many patrons. Service and food were terrific. I ordered a turkey club sandwich that was so massive, I could only finish half. My husband got an open faced... shrimp salad sandwich. Looking forward to going back when we can sit outside. Looks like a great menu and the cocktail prices were the most reasonable we’ve had all week. More

We have gone several times throughout the summer. Decided to take guest since it was close by and they had children. The food was just ok. Cream of crab soup lacked flavor. The Caesar salad was ok but I got chicken on top and it... had a very strange texture. Almost tasted like fake chicken with a rubbery texture. Not sure I will be going back again. More

Little after 6 PM and the place was crowded so we sat at the bar for a lite dinner. Wife ordered crab cake sand with no bread and Caesar salad. I ordered the fried breaded shrimp with fries. Our order arrived in a timely manner.... Don't know where the shrimp was from but they were the smallest tasteless things I've ever had. I suspect the food supplier has three grades to choose from. These were on the minus 2 list. I recently purchased a home nearby and was looking at places to dine. Oceans Pines Yacht club is on my (new) never return to list again. More

Perfect night & view with no stress about distancing. I had fish and chips, which was excellent, but the fries underneath were cold. I mentioned it to or server and he quickly brought me piping hot fries. Drinks small in plastic cups but it was... a dollar off for happy hour. My husband had meatloaf that was hard and possibly old. I pushed it a 4 because service was good & the environment pleasing. More

You do not have to be a member to eat here and the dress code is casual - no ripped clothes. We arrived an hour before happy hour ended to enjoy a light dinner and drinks. The setting is spectacular with beautiful views of the... Ocean City skyline. The staff was very friendly, and the food was great and very well prepared. I would go here again and it's a perfect date night restaurant. More

What an awesome New Year’s Eve party / celebration at the OP Yacht Club. The Matt Ortt Company was incredible with their food service, bartenders were awesome and the band was great as ever. This is our Yacht Club keep up the great work MOC... !!! More

Middle aged waitress at outside bar with dark hair in bun is nasty. Won’t return when she’s there. Her fake smirk and lack of communication skills make her miserable. Pines Point Provisions offers a much more pleasant experience. 🤮

Overlooking the Isle of Wight Bay and skyline of Ocean City, the Ocean Pines Yacht Club features a two-story building with catering and dining facilities. The upper level is home to a stunning ballroom and deck in addition to a bar and bridal and groom suites.

Downstairs is a casual-to-elegant eatery with indoor and outdoor seating as well as two bars. Outside are a spacious patio with fire pits, Adirondack chairs, a bandstand and a seasonal Tiki Bar and swimming pool.

Don't have a copy of the menu, but I recall that it was not a long one. One item that was on the menu was a Lobster Roll. I ordered it and it was delicious.

It was on the longer thread about OC. We are 0 for 2. One delay, one cancel. It hasn't been open long.

I also loved the lobster roll, wife said the mahi mahi was excellent.

Thanks for this post. That is the menu that I do remember seeing.

I now recall seeing the pasta dish with Pesto Sauce. The YC Chef on Meraviglia seemed to like Pesto Sauce for many of the pasta dishes. Having a pasta entree served to me with a "green" sauce was a new culinary experience for me; surprising for the eyes, but very good for the taste buds.

We had the Mahi Mahi and it was very good. Fresh caught if I remember correctly, or "locally sourced" as the menu states, which, I guess, could mean about anything.

And all of this is included for YC pax while on Ocean Cay?

As I recall, lunch service ends at 2:00 P. M. I arrived around 1:30 P. M. and was surprised that it was still as busy as it was.

Service options, venue notes.

The rental fee is $1500 for the reception and includes 4 hours of event time excluding set up and clean up time. The set up fee for an indoor or outdoor ceremony is $500 with an extra hour of event time. Additional hours can be arranged for a fee of $400/hr. A non-refundable security deposit of $2,000 is required. Saturday receptions during the months of May, June, September and October, also including the Sunday’s of Memorial and Labor Day weekends, require an attendance of at least 150 guests. If attendance is less than 150, a service charge of $20.00 will be applied for each person less than 150. Please inquire with venue wedding coordinator for more details.
