Posted Over 1 Month

Catamaran Dinghy Specifications 1) Is 10’ feet long x 54 inch beam 2) Weigh 95 lbs. without motor 3) Very easy to row 4) Dry when going to windward in a chop 5) Easy to clean 6) Holds four people 7) Plane easily with a 6 hp 8) Easy to walk off the bow 9) Maintenance free. No air, no leaks 10) Hold up well in the Caribbean sun 11) Turns on a dime 12) Is fast and stable 13) Fits on a car roof rack and is easily moved by only 2 people. 14) Has two Aluminum Oars 15) Stainless-Steel Oarlock Side Socket base 16) Four SS Lifting Eye Straps 1-7/8"L x 7/16"W for hanging dinghy off davits 17) 3/4 – Round Gunnel Guard all the way around 18) Two Rectangular Access Hatch’s, Overall: 11-1/8" x 14-3/4" 19) Stainless-Steel Rub Strakes to protect bottom when dragging up on a beach 20) Made from composites, epoxy and fiberglass layup 21) Optional: Mount a folding ladder off the bow for stable diving and snorkeling This Catatude Catamaran Dinghy is very stable and fast. You can turn her hard over at any speed and she turns flat and on a dime. She is just an effortless pleasure to row. I easily rowed her for over a mile, you can go full speed into a 20 knot chop and be dry as a bone. ------------------------------- Why a cat dinghy verses and inflatable. 1) Most inflatable’s give a wet ride in 15+ knot chop 2) Inflatables are noisy when tied behind the boat and water laps up under the tubes 3) Inflatables need more HP to push them 4) Inflatables row poorly 5) Inflatables turn poorly 6) Inflatables get stains and are hard to clean 7) Inflatables do not hold up well in the sun. Need expensive chaps in the Caribbean sun 8) Inflatables get leaks and most need to be repaired in just 4 years. 9) Cats Plane 600 pounds with only 10 horsepower 10) Cat seating arrangement gives you the advantage of choosing the direction you wish to face. 11) The Cat Tunnel increases the hull planning efficiently, by causing the water flow through it, to form a pressure which enhances the lift 12) Cats are Super Stable, roomy, safe and can carry a big payload and still plane with low horsepower. 13) Cats have no feeling of getting up on step, they transitioned smoothly from slow to high speeds. 14) Cats turn on a dime in both low and high speed. 15) Cats make great stable dive and snorkel boats with a folding ladder off the bow 16) My 10" inflatable would just barely plane with 2 people with a 6hp engine. This 10" Cat dinghy easily planes with 2 people in it using the same 6 hp engine. Must pickup or arrange for pickup and or shipping at the buyers expense. $2,490

GEMINI 105Mc CATAMARAN

GEMINI 105Mc CATAMARAN

Sarasota, Florida

***** 34' GEMINI CATAMARAN FOR SALE ***** This is a Gemini 105Mc, one of the largest catamaran fleets in the world. Sorry to see her go. Before it hits the brokers she is FOR SALE BY OWNER at $10,000 less, for a limited time. And if you buy my one share in WINDOG Inc, you own the company and pay no sales tax. Hull #698 was built by Tony Smith at Performance Cruising in 2000. The Gemini is no longer made but a fleet of over 1100 was produced from 1980 to 2010. The basic design lives on in the Legacy. WINDOG was one of the first of the Mc version, having an extra 1' of sail area along the leech and redesigned fiberglass molds. The 105Mc has a single mold for both hulls, which adds great rigidity. The added sail was intended to improve performance; I have consistently done 8 knots on a reach with a 25 knot crosswind. She was owned from 2000 to 2003 by Gary Peters of baseball fame and since then by me. She has gone to Key West and the Bahamas and back but the hull is as good as the day it first hit the water. The last seven years have been spent out of the water on a lift or noodling about Sarasota Bay. There are many new parts. The diesel engine has only 1200 hours on it, and the Yamaha less than that. The Captain's log tells all. NEW AND EXTRA EQUIPMENT WINDOG has several optional items, listed here. In addition, some items that have been installed or replaced within the last twelve months are listed with the notation NEW. Two Solar panels, producing 5 amps each at 15-20 volts. Dinghy davits, with 8' inflatable Yamaha 8 outboard, recently reconditioned Raymarine i60 Wind, mast top sensor and display, NEW Raymarine Autopilot, wheel drive, NEW Raymarine depth and speed, NEW Garmin GPS Map 400, NEW Garmin GPS Map 3210 West Marine VHF 150 Electric head Two 85-AH sealed batteries Helm seat Cockpit cushions Air conditioner Teak and holly interior flooring, NEW Sharp Aquos 12.5" TV, wall mounted Custom teak stairway handles Custom book racks Interior window shades throughout, NEW Rail mounted grill Cockpit cup holders Fortress anchor, spare NEW jib sheets, halyard and main sheet NEW sail cover Spare yoke for Sonic drive STANDARD FEATURES If you are not familiar with the Gemini 105Mc then you might Google "Gemini 105Mc." Here is a brief rundown of the standard features: The fiberglass hull and decks, 33'6" long and 14' wide, can be transported on US highways. The hull draws 18 inches. She has a 39' mast with spreaders, 46' off the water; 320 square foot main with three battens; a 150% Genoa of 390 square feet, with roller furling from the cockpit; forestay, backstay, two side stays and two secondary stays. The cockpit is 60" x 100" with an engine locker and two storage lockers, seating six comfortably. There are two large lockers aft, one sail locker forward and one anchor locker forward; a full solid fore deck with two seats; one halyard winch and two jib sheet winches. The inboard water-cooled 27 HP Westerbeke diesel has a 55-amp alternator, Sonic outdrive with 27" draft and hydraulic lift. There are two 18-gallon diesel tanks, two 20-lb propane tanks, two 30-gallon water tanks. She has two kick-up rudders with 27" draft and two retractable centerboards with 5'6" draft, operated from inside the cabin. The cabin and cockpit have 6' 0" to 6' 5" headroom throughout; four hatches with screens and windows all around; a dinette with 90" of seating and a drop down table holding a 65" x 62" mattress; a master suite forward with queen size bed, four closets and an eight draw dresser; a 90" x 19" galley, double sink, 2-burner stove, broiler and oven; 4 cubic foot refrigerator. There is sliding door storage on each side of the dinette as well as six fans, six ceiling lights, six AC outlets and two DC outlets throughout the cabin. Navigation station is 90" long, with three lockers and one cabinet (holds up to four batteries); the head has a stand up shower, stainless steel oval sink, double medicine cabinet, two towel racks, marine head and an 18 gal holding tank. Just inside the cabin are a 20-breaker AC/DC electrical panel, VHF radio, Xintex detector, captain's table and a jump seat. There are two bunk rooms, aft in the hulls, each with a 48" x 62" mattress, two portholes and two storage cabinets, plus storage under the bunks. The two bunk rooms, head and main salon are closed off by solid teak doors.

2022 Boat of the Year: Best Dinghy

  • By Dave Reed
  • December 17, 2021

Sailing World Magazine’s annual Boat of the Year tests are conducted in Annapolis, Maryland, following the US Sailboat Show. With independent judges exhaustively inspecting the boats on land and putting them through their paces on the water, this year’s fleet of new performance-sailing boats spanned from small dinghies to high-tech bluewater catamarans. Here’s the best of the best from our 2022 Boat of the Year nominees »

Skeptics be warned: The Happy Cat Hurricane is legit. This is the unanimous assessment from our Boat of the Year judging squad after sailing the surprisingly quick and nimble 16-foot inflatable catamaran in 10 knots of breeze. While it delivers exhilarating sailing, it’s much more than a recreational rubber dinghy—it’s an adventure craft, a portable sailboat, a pontoon motorboat, a lazy-river drifter, or anything you want it to be once it’s pumped and splashed.

Grabner is an Austrian manufacturer of all types of inflatable watercraft, which the company has been building since the mid-1980s. The Happy Cat Hurricane came online in 2017, and a carbon-mast version was added in 2019. The Hurricane Carbon, which the judges tested, is the company’s flagship go-fun craft, and apparently, it can’t make them fast enough.

We racers know fiberglass better than we do rubber, but Alex Caslow, of Redbeard Sailing in Baltimore (the US importer), says Grabner’s vulcanized rubber is “tire-quality” and sourced from Continental. All of the Happy Cat’s tubes, he adds, are handmade, glued and welded in Austria, producing high-quality hulls that should last at least 20 years. There’s a seven-year warranty on the hulls, he says, but should you ever need to, $2,000 is your replacement price (per hull). The all-up price for a new boat, with everything you need to go racing or gunkholing, is currently $15,000.

The magic to keeping the Happy Cat’s tubular platform stiff is the anodized aluminum frame that holds it all together. Tension cables crisscrossed beneath the trampolines provide additional stiffness in waves. The frame also serves as attachment points for the trampolines, which are clipped on rather than laced like most catamaran tramps.

The boat, Caslow says, can be assembled in roughly 40 minutes—from taken out of the storage bags to inflated and sails hoisted. Upgrading from the standard manual pump to a 12-volt air pump accelerates the process, of course.

Bags? That’s right. The entire boat and rig fit into four bags collectively small enough to transport in the average-size car trunk. This portability is its primary selling point, especially in Europe, where hundreds of owners and devotees regularly gather to rally and raid on alpine lakes and coastal enclaves. Its second selling point is that it sails as well as most fiberglass recreational catamarans.

“It definitely caught my eye when we first walked up to it,” Chuck Allen says. “The bright-red hulls, the carbon rig, all the ropes, but especially the interesting setup with the rudder and centerboard being on centerline. I’d never sailed a catamaran with a centerboard.

“The hulls are really firm—they feel just like a RIB tube, and all the aluminum framing and wires are nice quality. I was really curious how it would sail, and believe it or not, it sailed like a champ.”

Greg Stewart says his first impression was one of skepticism as well. “It seemed like it would be one of those boats that looked cool on land but would let us down, but it didn’t at all. It sailed amazingly. It tacked well enough that I didn’t have to backwind the jib, and got up to speed again quickly.”

The ability to tack it like a dinghy, Stewart says, is because of the centerboard and because the rudder is mounted in the best place possible. “What makes it steer so well is the rudder is so far aft, which gives you a nice turning moment between it and the centerboard.”

The centerboard has up/down lines that are led to the front beam and cam cleats, but there is a breaker line in case you get into shallow waters. The centerboard casing also acts as an anchor point for the dolphin striker.

The reverse “wave-piercing” bows have a lot of buoyancy down low, Stewart adds. When he was sailing upwind through chop, they “just want to lift and rise up over the wave.” If flying a hull gets a bit too unnerving, he says, a small ease on the mainsheet or a slight bear away makes the boat settle right down with a soft and pillowy landing. Stewart forgot to conduct the obligatory capsize test, but he said afterward that the boat tended to simply slip sideways if the weather hull got too high. The optional masthead float, however, would be a good choice for peace of mind, he says.

“There’s a great sensation of speed,” Powlison reports, especially with the 91-square-foot gennaker. “The Velocitek SpeedPuck that was on the boat was reading 10 to 11 knots regularly, and it wasn’t hard at all to tack or jibe either. The spinnaker clew is pretty high, and the boomless square-top mainsail (124 square feet) makes it really easy to get across the boat.”

“This boat rips,” was Allen’s final assessment. He gave it high marks all around, but what ultimately stole his favor was a browse through Grabner’s catalog, which showcased the Happy Cat’s versatility: Leave the mast in its bag, erect the optional sun awning, and slap on the outboard motor bracket to transform it into an outboard-powered exploration craft and swimming platform. Or strap on extra fore and aft trampolines, load the boat up with camping gear in dry bags, and explore new places.

“Its biggest appeal really is its portability,” Stewart says. “If you don’t have easy access to a yacht club or storage near the water, you can easily keep this in the garage or apartment without taking up much space at all. Throw it in the car and take it wherever you want.”

Assembly, Caslow says, is simple and quick once the hulls are inflated. The tubes slide into grooves in the frame, tension cables are clipped on with carabiners, the trampoline is strapped on, and the mast can be raised by one person once it’s pinned onto the ball joint.

When it’s assembled, the Hurricane Carbon is only 175 pounds, but it is still a bit unwieldy for solo ramp launching. For this particular challenge, Grabner offers flip-up “slip wheels” that mount to the aft beam and stay on the boat while sailing. With your standard big-wheeled catamaran dolly, however, it’s easy to move around and beach-launch. And once you’re underway and zipping along, crew extended on the wire and the soft bounce of the hull on your bottom, you’ll just want to keep on sailing—happy as a cat on nip.

We take pride in our happy customers

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Andrew Hodgdon was our broker when we bought our 2018 Lagoon 450F in Antigua in April 2922. He provided great service and was very attentive to our needs. We would highly recommend Andrew and the Multihull Company.

Used Sailing Catamaran Boats For Sale

Narrow your search.

Manufacturer

Catamarans have seen a steady increase in popularity over the last several years as more people charter them in exotic destinations and realize the value of having that much extra space on board. Sailing catamarans have exceptionally wide beams which make for a sturdy platform while enjoying the boat, but this design feature also gives owners a lot of livable space. The salon, galley, and entertainment spaces on a catamaran can be exceptional thanks to the additional volume.

The stability of catamarans are one of the main selling points and why so many more are selling in recent years. It is a much different experience being anchored at night in a catamaran than in your more traditional monohull boats. Sailing cats also don't need much water to run so your draft is generally a lot lower than monohulls. This makes owning a catamaran ideal for Florida, Bahamas, and the Caribbean. Power catamarans have also become increasingly popular for boaters that desire the benefits of a cat hull, but don't want to worry about a sail.

There are many sailing cat manufacturers today whose boats are used in both charter and private ownership. Sometimes the charter companies even put their charter boats on the market at a reduced price when they sell them. Sailing Catamaran manufacturers like Lagoon, Leopard , Privilege, and Gunboat, among others, have continued to advance their products by using new construction methods, higher quality, materials, and design layouts that promote private ownership and not just charter. Let the team at United Yacht Sales help you find the right used sailing catamaran for sale that fits your budget and needs.

Here Are Some Commonly Asked Questions About Sailing Catamarans

What is the difference between a catamaran and monohull sailboat?

A catamaran sailboat is basically two parallel set wide apart hulls with mast and sails in between, while a monohull sailboat is a single hull centered around a heavy ballasted keel to counterbalance the mast and sails. The catamaran footprint tends to be square or rectangular instead of a long and narrow single hull. These basic differences impact the entire sailing experience. Because catamarans’ stability is based on its beam and multihull configuration (called form stability), they do not heel (tilt) like a monohull, nor do they require a ballast and large keel. Traditional sailors tend to prefer the exhilaration of heeling under sail, but it does require physical strength and skill. Since catamarans don’t heel, the boat’s motion is different, and sails need to be trimmed differently. Catamarans don’t really tack or handle that well in increased winds; they don’t “feel” the wind immediately as a traditional sailboat. But the advantages of a catamaran far outweigh the detractions and include stability, safety, speed, spaciousness, efficiency, comfort, and greater privacy in the accommodations.

The two hulls offer inherent stability and a deck platform that tends to stay level—no rolling or heelingwhich greatly helps with seasickness! The large open and enclosed main deck areas, along with accommodations in separate hulls, are great for entertaining, families, and charter groups. With less drag (less wetted hull surface and weight), the speedy catamarans can outrun weather and travel farther. They are less likely to capsize, since they don’t heel or rock and are less dependent on weight distribution; but if they do, catamarans do not right themselves like a monohull is designed to do…but neither will a catamaran sink, there is enough buoyancy in the hulls to keep them afloat.

Catamarans can have a flybridge or raised bridge decks with 360-degree visibility, a distinct advantage over traditional sailboats that cannot have a flybridge. Being lighter weight and without a keel, catamarans can sail in shallower waters making them ideal for cruising around islands, anchoring closer to shore, and a great platform for diving. Some catamarans can be beached, resting on their hulls, allowing quick repairs or a shore picnic!

Lighter weight also translates into fuel efficiencies and having two engines set wide apart allows a catamaran to track very straight or rotate in place, and even ‘crab’ sideways making bow thrusters unnecessary. With so many benefits, it’s no wonder sailing (and power) catamarans are one of the fastest growing recreational boat categories.

Is a monohull or catamaran sailing yacht better for long range cruising?

While much of the choice is based on personal preference, some sailors who have experienced worldwide cruising in both types of sailing yachts, prefer the modern catamaran for undeniable advantages in safety. This includes no heeling, level sailing for less crew fatigue and seasickness, speed to outrun weather, hard to capsize, will float if they do capsize, and have redundancy of engines, props, charging and other systems.

Monohull sailboats are designed to work with the elements and have a sailing advantage—tacking and quicker maneuvering under sail especially upwind, better performing in heavy weather, and the keel/ballast enables monohulls to right themselves from a capsize but will not float if holed. Monohull sailboats are less costly to purchase and maintain.

Are there any superyacht sailing catamarans?

Currently the largest sailing catamaran is “Hemisphere”, built in 2011 by Pendennis Shipyard, UK and designed by renowned naval architect VPLP Design (Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost). The 145ft sloop-rigged yacht sails at 13 knots and was designed for the luxury charter market. It can accommodate 12 guests and 8 crew for world-class cruises in sumptuous comfort. Enjoy dive trips all around French Polynesia. Also designed by VPLP, the all-aluminum schooner catamaran built in 1998 by French builder, Alu-Marine, and is capable of sailing at up to 15 knots and cruising at 12 knots. “Douce France” is 126.6 ft in length and can accommodate 12 guests plus 7 crew. Though catamarans make up less than 10% of the global superyacht fleet, more superyacht concept catamaran sailing yachts are on the drawing boards of top design firms for the many advantages catamarans offer.

When were the first sailing catamarans built?

The first Western example of a double-hulled sailing vessel was designed in Europe by William Petty in 1662 for the same advantages catamarans offer today—to sail faster, in shallower waters, in lighter wind, and with fewer crew than other vessels of that era. It was not accepted commercially, due to people’s skepticism of the unfamiliar and the design was generally unused until 160 years later when an Englishman built a double-hulled merchant ship described as “a fast-sailing fine sea boat” for trading during the monsoon season in Burma (Myanmar). Later in the 19th century, American Nathanael Herreshoff designed and patented his double hulled sailing boat named Amaryllis, and raced her in a June 1876 regatta, in which she performed extremely well, demonstrating the catamaran’s distinct performance advantages over standard monohulls.

Then in 1936, Eric de Bisschop built a Polynesian style “double canoe” that he sailed from Hawaii to France and was given a hero’s welcome, like Lindberg’s transatlantic flight! Considered the “grandfathers of the cruising catamaran industry,” brothers Roland and Francis Prout worked on their own catamaran design in 1949 and then converted their boat factory in England to catamaran production in 1954. Their Shearwater catamarans handily beat monohulls in races. Their sail plan of enlarged jib (over 2x area of mainsail) set aft of midships, and reduced size of mainsail kept the bows from digging in! A winning model sailed by Francis Prout is in the collection of the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. The speed and seaworthiness of the Prout catamarans attracted attention and orders; the 1970s were the most productive. Though production ended in 2002, Prout catamaran sailboats are still in the boat brokerage market today.

When were the first catamaran sailboats raced?

American Nathanael Herreshoff designed and patented his double hulled sailing boat named Amaryllis in 1876, and raced her in a June 1876 regatta, in which she performed amazingly well, proving the catamaran’s performance advantages over traditional monohulls. As a result of Amaryllis’ easy win at the Centennial Regatta of the New York Yacht Club, catamarans were barred from the regular sailing classes for nearly 100 years, until the 1970s. In Europe, the Prout brothers sailing catamarans went into production in 1954, after they easily won races against monohulls, creating demand for the Prout brothers’ Shearwater catamaran and subsequent models that became very popular during the 1970s.

The “America’s Cup” is the oldest and longest running yachting race in the world and has been dubbed “The Formula One” of yacht racing. Begun in 1851 with a race around the Isle of Wight in England that was won by the yacht, “America” of The New York Yacht Club (NYYC) which was awarded custody of the trophy cup, renamed “America’s Cup” in honor of the winning team. The rules were changed in 2010 to include 90ft multihull racing yachts and that led to the 2013 Americas Cup Race between Oracle USA Team’s AC72 with its towering wingsail and Emirates New Zealand’s AC72 introduction of foiling. Modern racing catamarans have come a long way, utilizing hydrofoils and rigid sails to achieve speeds of 50+ knots, faster than the winds propelling them by combining the laws of hydrodynamics with aerodynamics to achieve these astonishing speeds.

catamarans racing in americas cup

Hydrofoils reduce wetted surface to a minimum, effectively reducing friction and wave drag to lift the hulls above the surface; rigid sails are shaped like aircraft wings, effectively producing a greater apparent wind when combined with true wind to power the craft beyond true wind speed. The racing catamarans literally fly out of the water like flying fish! Today racing yacht design is moving away from catamarans to monohulls with huge hydrofoils and soft wing mainsail, as new design rules are set. The America’s Cup has challenged competing teams to push the limits of sailing skill and boat/sail design producing the innovations seen over the years of this most prestigious race.

What are beachable sailing catamarans?

Simply put, shallow draft catamaran sailboats that can be pulled up on a beach to sit on its keels. Most 40-50 foot catamarans only draw between 3' - 4.5' of draft. Some hulls are reinforced with Kevlar for extra protection and strength. Most catamarans are lighter and those with daggerboards and/or rudders can lift to allow beaching. Monohull sailboats cannot be beached because of the large keel and ballast. Iconic California surfboard manufacturer Hobie built the first beach launchable, daysailing 14ft HobieCat in 1967 based on the Polynesian catamaran. They are ideal for youth sailing schools. HobieCats in a range of models are still being manufactured today and marketed around the world!

What are some of the current popular brands of catamaran sailboats?

  • Manta Sailing Catamarans are a USA built classic originally designed by noted multihull French naval architect Erik Lerouge and are still prized by catamaran sailors who have established a Manta owners group. Gemini and MaineCat are the only sailing catamarans produced in the USA today.

What is the cost of a 40-to-42 foot sailing catamaran?

The median cost of preowned cruising catamaran sailboats model year range 2000 to 2009 and 40-42ft length, currently available in the USA, is $219,900. Worldwide median cost is about $35K higher. For preowned model year range 2010 to 2019, 40-42ft length currently available in USA, median cost is $487,500. Worldwide median is about $10K lower, as there are more available abroad.

Freqently Asked Questions

A. Most inflatables in the U.S. market are boring. They all look and perform the same. Instead of copying everyone else’s design, we decided to innovate. The Takacat catamaran hull design is fast, stable, safe, and comfortable. The fast draining removable Tube Transom® is simple and portable, which makes Takacat one of the most versatile inflatable boats in the market.

A. The Takacat line of boats are designed for quick and easy assembly. No need to mess around with heavy and complicated floorboard systems, our high pressure air deck floor fits perfectly in place while it inflates. Inflation with the supplied manual pump takes about 15 minutes, depending on the size of the boat and your urgency. Inflation with an electric pump takes about 8-10 minutes

A: We recommend cavitation plates for outboards greater than 6hp and less than 20 horsepower. Our dealers carry a wide variety of brands, we have tested and confirm the efficacy of the Permatrim and the Davis Dole-Fin.We recommend having your propeller cupped if you experience any cavitation or ventilation. Cupping the prop will give the propeller more grip in the water and increase performance. We recommend PowerTech stainless steel propellers for the best possible performance of your Takacat, although not necessary in most cases.

Permatrim Plate

Lift the power and performance of your Takacat’s gas-powered outboard motor with a Permatrim Hydrofoil. The catamaran design with a single, centralized outboard lends itself to ventilation on higher power outboards. This is more prevalent in the shorter models, but can be brought out on any of the Takacat boats.

We have a remedy to this problem by way of another New Zealand product—Permatrim. This foil plate bolts to the cav plate (the little tongue that sticks out over the propeller) and does a good job of fixing cavitation issues. It also helps get the boat on plane quicker and easier, and reduces splashing from the transom when underway. Fitment Guide:

All Catamarans For Sale

Catalac 9m

S/V Déjà Vu is a 1972 Catalac 9M catamaran, for sale by owner. A hybrid with sail/solar propulsion, its main advantages are: sustainability, silence, no fumes/engine troubles, little energy costs, easy maintaining.

After more than 30 years of experience in designing and building solar powered boats, I ventured into the combination of sail and solar propulsion for a sea/inland waterways cruising boat using only renewable energies. It should be added that I use the boat as a means of travelling! – Europe is so much richer for cruising not using only the different seas but also rivers and canals.

So I replaced the diesel engines in a well-maintained Catalac 9m built in 1972 by 2 electric motors. These have the advantage that they require hardly any maintenance and are also highly efficient in the partial load range.

Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 Evolution

S/V ASPE is a 2016 Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 Evolution catamaran, for sale by owner. ASPE is hull number #140, an Evolution model launched in 2016. She comes with with 4 cabins and 4 heads. The Helia is a well proven catamaran with several circumnavigations. This is the later Evolution model with higher and better davits and newer windows (30% more light).

Our family has sailed the boat since March 2022. Fully equipped for comfortable and safe bluewater cruising. This boat has been upgraded by the owner and comes with an impressive inventory list. Haul out with antifoul, hull polish, engine and sail drives service just done (Sep 2023).

This boat is ready for takeover in French Polynesia from April 2024 with some flexibility. ASPE is a very well maintained and sought-after vessel that is ready to take a new owner on her next adventure. Start your sailing dream in one of the most beautiful places in the world!

Gemini 105MC

S/V Gem is a 2006 Gemini 105MC catamaran, for sale by owner. This is a one of a kind Gemini 105mc, perfectly rigged for single/short hand sailing with furling screecher sail (self tacking), furling genoa, AND furling inmast mainsail! Sparcraft mast, boom and standing rigging installed in 2015, along with a new Yanmar 30hp inboard engine with low running hours (+-1400h).

All systems have been maintained meticulously, and ongoing cosmetic maintenance is currently being carried out (interior teak, gelcoat polishing etc). We have not spared any expense since we’ve owned her. We had a survey carried out last year and no serious issues were found. Small finding have been sorted out since the survey (small sail repair, new genoa line, service of liferaft and fire fighting equipment). All up to date!

Included in the sale is a berth at the beautiful Preveza Marina, Greece. It is valid from date of listing until July 2024. Preveza is a wonderful town at the door of the Ionian Islands. Great staff and amazing facilities. A huge benefit to any prospective buyer who wishes to sail Western Greece and further into the Med! This is providing the marina is in agreement at the time of sale, but there should be no issue.

Bali 4.1

S/V Sabatica is a 2019 Bali 4.1 catamaran, for sale by owner. Never chartered. Second owners. Low engine hours. Major upgrades in 2023 for performance, comfort and security on the hook: Watermaker, Washing Machine, Ultra Anchor, 600 Ah Lithium House Batteries, Stainless Steel Solar Platform for a total of 1610W production, Solenoid switch propane control from the galley, Bow Sprit and Screecher, window screens, full cushions and foredeck sun shade. Hauled out and bottom painted in 2023. Engines and sail drives serviced in 2023.

We chose the Bali 4.1 model in general, and this 4 cabin/2 bathroom layout in particular, because we felt it offered the best comfort and living space in a vessel of this size while remaining a lively and seaworthy vessel.

Currently docked in Licata, Sicily. Could be available as soon as August in Western Italy or September in the Balearics. Thereafter moored in Southern Spain. Other locations are possible subject to negotiation. Sabatica would be sold ready to go with tools and cruising gear.

Leopard 46

S/V Paw Paw is a 2011 Leopard 46 catamaran, for sale by owner. Designed by architects, Melvin and Morrelli, and built by Robertson and Caine, this outstanding, single owner 2011 Leopard 46 is a world class blue water cruising catamaran that combines a stylish, comfortable and spacious living accommodation, high quality construction and great performance.

This yacht comes fully equipped with twin YANMAR 54HP engines, RAYMARINE electronics, NORTHERN LIGHTS generator, wind and solar power, 600Ah lithium house battery bank, SPECTRA 12 Volt water maker, VICTRON 2 kW inverter / charger and air conditioning, to mention just a few of her features.

Whilst this yacht has been immaculately maintained, it also features numerous upgrades and enhancements undertaken over the years, including new standing rigging in May of 2023.

Lagoon 450S

S/V Mystic is a US-flagged, 2018 Lagoon 450S Owner Edition catamaran, for sale by owner.

The original owners are accomplished offshore sailors with 22 years of experience who have been cruising S/V Mystic through the Virgin Islands, New England, Florida, and the Bahamas since she was built. Mystic is currently in St. Maarten and ready for more adventures. Owners’ children are grown and busy, and business responsibilities make it difficult for them to spend as much time on the boat as they would like. This is their second lagoon catamaran, the first being a Lagoon 410, and they continue to love the brand.

Mystic has been the perfect platform for us to make lasting memories with friends and family and we believe it is the best 45′ cruising catamaran ever made. We have traveled many thousands of miles in safety and comfort. Our only regret is that we didn’t order a Code Zero and Spinnaker when we bought the boat for more sail combinations in both protected and offshore conditions. The boat needs only the new owners’ personal gear and provisions and she is offshore-ready.

Royal Cape 45

S/V Ego Domi is a 2003 Royal Cape 45 catamaran, for sale by owner. A fantastic family boat, Ego Domi is a bluewater cruising catamaran built in 2003 at Durban, South Africa. She was sailed across the Atlantic to Florida in 2003 by the original owner and never entered into the charter trade.

This is a large, well-appointed catamaran. Royal Cape catamarans are a very good value, are built with solid construction and are well-tried cruising boats. They are built very tough, as they were designed to handle conditions off the African East coast. This boat is great in rough seas with virtually no bridge deck slap due to the buoyancy of the hulls. Being well built, one shouldn’t expect a racing catamaran, but then again, if you’re looking for a catamaran with a large interior volume, which will keep 8 or so guests in consummate comfort, you could make worst choices than this RCC.

Originally built with fiberglass over a wood core as a 5 cabin and 5 head charter boat, she was converted to 4 cabins and 4 heads in 2005 by the previous owners. The 5th cabin was converted into a tool / spare parts/storage room while the 5th head was converted into a battery storage room. During conversion, it was noted that the laminated bulkheads were 2” thick; main bulkhead is 3” in places.

Lagoon 42

S/V Sonder is a 2019 Lagoon 42 catamaran, owner’s version (3 cabins), offered by her original owners, a husband and wife team, who outfitted Sonder for a live aboard sabbatical with extended, remote, blue water cruising in mind. No pets, no smokers, and never chartered, and with meticulous investments in professional maintenance and care, Sonder looks almost new in many respects.

Sonder is the perfect vessel to cruise distant shores and relax in comfort at anchor.  She has the combination of fun sailing and condo like living that makes adventuring abroad very comfortable for any couple. A VPLP design, Lagoon 42s perform very well compared to other similarly sized vessels.  With her square top main and Code 0 equipped, in reasonable winds and seas, Sonder often maintains 8-10 knots of speed while sailing, even while loaded down with cruising gear.

In a remote anchorage, Sonder’s oversized Rocna anchor, sun shades, large solar capacity and lithium battery bank, oversized and efficient generator with ample fuel capacity, all come into play to ensure comfort and safety for prolonged periods, in good or bad weather conditions. With the sail package, and the numerous amenities and equipment that are offered on Sonder, she is a rare, turn-key find, ready to sail remotely in the tropics worldwide, with both comfort and performance.

She looks amazing and was built for extended cruising and not the charter market, as is evident in its abundance of storage. We have owned Beguiler for 10 years, and used her for cruising the Bahamas every winter. Her previous 13 years were spent in the summers on Lake Ontario. Both owners are engineers, and coast guard auxiliary members and thus, she has lots of redundancy, and spares, and safety gear ,and a detailed log book. Yearly, she has been waxed, and her sails inspected.

This vessel has incredible head room and spaciousness with unparalleled views from the helm seat. The helmsman and crew all have plenty of space in the cockpit with its massive hardtop bimini and full enclosure for inclement weather. If you’re into easy sailing, then this is the catamaran for you, as all lines lead to the helm with a self tacking jib. Power winches make raising the sails a one person job and power davits make raising the dinghy easy. Fuel efficiency when motor sailing is extremely low at 0.5 gal per hr at 6 knots.

Below deck, Smoke and Roses has four spacious, air conditioned private staterooms with en suite heads and showers. The head has been removed from one cabin and replaced with a washer and dryer. The upgraded rig geometry allows reefing from both the helm or the mast. The vast trampoline between the bows is the perfect place to relax and the user friendly deck layout is easy to move around with a non-skid surface.

Lagoon 380

S/V Misha is a 2000 Lagoon 380 catamaran, for sale by owner. Misha is hull number 15, which if you check the reviews, was better built than later models.

This catamaran has had only 2 owners, NEVER chartered, and is in excellent condition. Only 700 hours on the engines. Custom interior upholstery and curtains. A joy to sail, super easy and fun. The reason for the low engine hours is due to the fact that the original owner lived in Arizona and only used the catamaran in the summer on the San Francisco Bay. This boat has been babied from day one.

The Lagoon 380 is known as the most successful cruising catamaran model. Introduced in 2000, it was built to be a workhouse for the charter industry and an entry level-cruiser. It is a great entry level cruising catamaran that sails better than many other cats and provides lots of living space for the money.

Sailcraft Apache 44

S/V Retreat Time is a Florida-based 1977 Sailcraft Apache 44 catamaran for sale by its owner. Redesigned with electric propulsion, beachable, the deck layout and rig offer a stable, safe, and well-reasoned platform for whatever comes your way.

This performance catamaran uses rotating dagger boards to increase the boat’s pointing ability when going to windward. She can point with the best of them. Yet, with the retractable boards up, the draft of the boat is reduced to just 3 6 Ft. This is the best of both worlds.

This boat can sleep 8 people, Two double aft berths, Two single forward berths and a Double center forward berth all of them in comfort. She is a well-equipped boat, whose owners have gone to considerable expense to repower her with brand new twin electric propulsion. She is ready to go. SAILING CATAMARANS FOR SALE

Without question, the sailing catamaran is the most active category of pleasure boat today, with a growing number of builders using fresh designs from a variety of naval architects. In the past decade, the sailing cat has gone from somewhat of an oddity to fully mainstream, as the benefits of the catamaran concept eventually lures traditional sailors away from the teak interiors and heeling in a monohull. Those new to sailing and cruising have no predetermined opinions, so are easily convinced of the advantages of a sailing cat, not having any familiarity of the issues associated with the catamaran’s early history.

Search Sailing Catamarans by Price

Search sailing catamarans by length, search sailing catamarans by year, more about used sailing catamarans.

There are no less than 20 builders of sailing catamarans around the world, and it is quite difficult to distinguish one from another at a boat show, where they take up significant real estate. Global catamaran builders now include Seawind, Leopard, St. Francis, Majestic, Knysna, Kinetic, Maverick, Antares, Lagoon, Discovery, Catania, Outremer, Nautitech, Fountaine Pajot, Balance, Bali, and Xquisite. There are also many custom yards, such as Alwoplast in Chile, that build custom cats to the designs of Chris White and Malcolm Tennant. It is an understatement to say the sailing catamaran has come of age.

The wide beam of the catamaran offers tremendous stability and visually open space. Accommodations are significantly greater that those offered by a monohull of the same length. Unless one is looking at a model built for the charter business, which maximizes the number of staterooms, the living spaces can be easily tailored for a liveaboard agenda with master stateroom, en-suite head, and storage in one of the hulls. Some cats put the master accommodations on the bridgedeck, so owners are not forced to sleep in a relatively narrow hull.

Modern sailing gear and systems make these boats much simpler to sail, but one must be aware of the wind conditions, as sailing cats don’t heel, so it isn’t obvious when it is time to reef or shorten sails as on a monohull. An eye on the wind speed indicator tells you it is time to shorten sail to not overpower the boat. Early catamarans could turn upside down and remain quite stable inverted. Modern cruising cats do not have this tendency, and it is rare for this to happen except for racing catamarans that push the envelope far offshore.

The wide and open bridgedeck allows a nice galley and saloon layout with large windows that keep things bright and appealing, wide sliding pocket doors often open onto the aft cockpit, creating a unique and open living space that is hard to beat except on a superyacht. Spending quality time in an anchorage with the boat opened is about as good as it gets.

Sailing cats are also known for the wonderful ability to have a large dinghy on davits between the hulls. This is not to be understated, as a good dinghy is vital for a cruising boat, and this is by far the best way to carry a dinghy. It is simple work to raise the dinghy at the end of the day, keeping its bottom clean and out of touch of sticky fingers when cruising remote areas.

In these days of social media, a growing number of couples sustain their cruising lifestyle through Patreon donations from their YouTube channels. This has become one of the best marketing programs ever devised. Interestingly, many of these couples were new to sailing, and started with a sailing cat. Other couples may have started their travels on a monohull but switched over to a catamaran after visiting other YouTubers on their cat. They saw firsthand that the step up in livability is profound. Watching the weekly exploits of young couples exploring the world on their sailing cats has captured the imagination of millions of people. No one has done a better job of promoting life on a sailing cat than these people, and a few of the most popular channels have over a million subscribers. No print ad in any magazine can approach such lifestyle marketing.

Catamarans don’t like weight, especially in the ends of the boat, although that is less of an issue then it once was. Still, it is healthy to be mindful of what comes aboard, and rather than bring dozens of books to read while circling the globe, it is better to have one’s library on a Kindle. That is a practical example of the mantra of the cruising catamaran sailor. And while a cruising cat may have water tankage for a couple hundred gallons of water, a water maker is often installed.

Sailing cats come with two engines set far apart, using either straight drives or sail drives. This is more than enough for economical operation and great maneuverability.  As cats don’t require much horsepower to move through the water, sailing cats between 42 and 46 feet typically have diesel engines rated at only 29 to 40hp.

Living on a catamaran at anchor is delightful, as the open space, especially on the newer designs, is open, protected, and spacious. Cats need a bridle when anchoring to keep them from swinging back and forth, which keep the anchor rode between the hulls. It is not a difficult skill to learn but is key to successful anchoring.

There is something quite idyllic about enjoying morning coffee on a swim platform, watching the fish that tend to circle around in the shaded water between the hulls.

The success of the modern sailing catamaran is ample proof that it is one of the most attractive choices for sailing and cruising. There are projects under way to take them even further as the boat of the future, with solar arrays, lithium battery technology, and developing electric drive systems to make them carbon free. No other cruising boat is a better platform for these developments, so it is likely sailing catamarans will be the tip of the spear of the future greener boating experience.

St. Vincent Court Orders Deportation For Hijacking Suspects

  • By Brinley Hineman
  • March 5, 2024

St. Vincent police station

The three men who authorities believe hijacked a catamaran in the Caribbean and tossed the American passengers overboard will be deported from St. Vincent following a judge’s order Monday, The Associated Press reported.

Trevon Roberston, a 19-year-old unemployed man; Abita Stanislaus, a 25-year-old farmer; and Ron Mitchell, a 30-year-old sailor; appeared in a St. Vincent court Monday after the three pleaded guilty to immigration charges. The men will be sent back to Grenada “as soon as practicable,” Senior Magistrate Colin John ordered, according to the AP.

The three men had escaped from police custody in Grenada on Feb. 18 and are accused of hijacking Simplicity , a sailing catamaran owned by Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel. Authorities announced the couple is presumed dead.

The bodies of Hendry and Brandel haven’t been recovered. The men haven’t been charged in the couple’s deaths but instead faced immigration-related charges for illegally entering St. Vincent.

The couple, experienced sailors, were on their final voyage with the Salty Dawg Sailing Association when it “took an unthinkable turn as Simplicity was found abandoned in St. Vincent, bearing chilling evidence of a violent struggle,” said a GoFundMe created for the couple’s family.

Evidence discovered aboard Simplicity suggests there were “acts of violence,” police said. Investigators found what is believed to be blood on the boat.  The couple’s children, Nick Buro and Bryan Hendry, said in a statement they remain optimistic in the search for their parents, who “lived a life that most of us can only dream of, sailing the eastern coast of the United States, living on their home Simplicity, making friends with everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family.”

To be represented by Premium Yachts, Ferretti Yachts and Riva , two prestigious brands of the Ferretti Group, will be present at the Moscow International Boat Show 2013, displaying motor yacht Ferretti 530 as well as Riva Iseo yacht tender.

Luxury motor yacht Ferretti 530

Luxury motor yacht Ferretti 530

Luxury yacht Ferretti 530 was very keen to undertake in collaboration once again with AYT – Advanced Yacht Technology, Ferretti Group Engineering Division and Studio Zuccon International Project . The compact dimensions, 16 meters long and almost 5 meters wide, allow the 530 yacht to deliver grand Italian luxury and cruising immersed in such comfort until now unheard of in a yacht of this size.

Ferretti 530 yacht boasts three revolutionary innovations: the full beam master cabin with chaise longue and two large open view windows that make it a real suite at sea level bathed in light, tones and the natural essences of teak. Moving the galley from the center to the aft section creates a unique open space that includes the saloon, galley, cocktail bar and the dining area, the cockpit area continues thanks to the tilting window. The roll bar free sky lounge and the spoiler allow the 530 a sporty appearance combined with elegantly formal lines.

Riva , the iconic Ferretti Group brand, presented a new model at the historical Lake d’Iseo shipyards in July 2011. Featuring elegance and ease of transportation as its distinctive characteristics, Iseo superyacht tender , a 27 foot runabout, is destined to become a must-have for those who love cruising on both lakes and the sea, and, most importantly, design enthusiasts. It is also perfect for anyone wishing to enhance their yacht with an exclusive tender that will never go unnoticed.

Due to its ease of manoeuvrability and size, Iseo yacht tender is also ideal as a tender for large yachts. Innovative and elegant, it can also guarantee comfort in bad weather conditions. Besides the electrohydraulic bimini top, it was also designed with a waterproof, automobile-style soft top which protects those on board against water and the wind during cruising.
