In our view, the 46 and 52 were among the most successful Spirit Yachts designs, and for good reason. But at 65 feet, the deckhouse proportions really work and the concept probably reaches its sweet spot - a beautifully timeless aesthetic - and could easily be sailed by two people only. Elegance combined with modern handling above and below the waterline, and great craftsmanship, are of course a Spirit Yachts specialty, but it takes commissioning owners with vision to create a boat like SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE. From natural zinc surfaces to Harris Tweed Chesterfields, she leaves you wanting to spend time aboard. This is no average boat: SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE is a modern classic with an awful lot of soul.

OWNERS' COMMENTS

SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE was a five year project from initial discussion to completion. She was built to embody some of the very best things we enjoy and hold dear, and was a fabulous coalition of ideas. First and foremost, she is a beautifully made and elegant sailing yacht. Light, responsive, fast and genuinely fun for two people to sail. She is also an indulgence: we recognised that when we built her, but we also recognised that our fortune in being able to build her did not give us license to overly pollute or damage the environment. So she is primarily made of natural, sustainable materials and has an electric regenerative sail drive system to supplement the wind! The saloon does away with a traditional u-shaped table in favour of a zinc bar and leather bar stools, allowing comfortable chat over meal prep (style cue from the Covent Garden Hotel where we have been known to spend a number of hours!). The brass bar lights are a modern adaptation (LED bulbs) of old steamer lights. Her saloon sofa and chairs are made from Harris Tweed and the arm chairs in particular were installed to allow comfortable relaxation in a glorious space, albeit with an abundance of hand holds. The crockery storage is beautiful Spirit Yachts cabinetry and just makes you smile. Its about detail, finish and ingenuity. No one needs a 30 piece bone china set of crockery at sea, but then no one needs a 65 foot yacht. All the mattresses are natural (marine proofed) materials and supplied by Natural Mat. The sinks are from the London Basin company and match our house sinks, and in a nod to our favourite spy the nav chair is modelled on the passenger seat of an Aston Martin DB5! We hoped to build an interior that was elegant and that would age gracefully. A place where we felt comfortable, secure and surrounded by beautiful things.

SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE for sale

The special thing about what we do at the Berthon Sales Group is that we are trusted with the marketing and sale of so many incredible yachts! Occasionally, we are asked to handle a yacht that tugs on the heartstrings and which is so special in so many respects that she makes the heart sing. Spirit 65DH SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE is one such yacht.

Essentially a new yacht - she was first commissioned in 2021. Her first overnight voyage was from the East Coast of the UK, to our shipyard on the Solent. All Spirit Yachts look amazing. Spirit 65DH, SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE at 65 feet carries her deck saloon beautifully and her fine ends and elegant transom really work. Her spirit of tradition and good looks belie the modern technology that has been used to ensure that she is truly carbon neutral. Twin electric motors, sustainable Lignia decks and soleboards, and the intelligent use of lithium ion batteries to power her systems, regenerated by her variable pitch sail drives. Her on-board 48v generator is for back up only. Of course, her primary propulsion are her sails and here she is fast, easily sailed and very responsive.

On deck and down below, she has been hand crafted throughout, with a comfortable cockpit and charming deck saloon which is a great place for watch keeping when in open water.

Possibly SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE’s biggest surprise is her main saloon, which is an uncompromising and proper living space with a large natural zinc galley counter and 4 bar stools in stainless steel. The galley also has a Barista coffee machine and grinder in addition to the refrigeration, storage and cooker you would expect. Two easy chairs and a sofa complete the picture all executed in Harris Tweed and Galveston leather from Tetrad. The forward bulkhead holds custom storage for her full set of mythical creatures collection of crockery by Wedgewood.

Forward is a generous en-suite owner’s cabin with a further double berthed cabin and upper and lower berthed cabin with a separate heads aft of the main saloon.

Every detail in the construction and fit out of SPIRIT OF JOSPEHINE has been carefully considered in order to make this special yacht not just beautiful and kind to the planet, but practical, easy to handle shorthanded and capable of passage making in security and comfort. She is quite simply, unique.

To regular readers of this magazine, Sally II , a Laurent Giles 5-tonner, built in 1937, sail number V2, might be the most famous yacht in the world! Sally was commissioned by a Poole solicitor for local sailing, but in her time has cruised all over the UK, from Wales, across Channel to France , and now on the west coast of Scotland. Structurally in excellent condition – her tungum bronze floors, lead keel, bronze bolts and pitch pine on massive oak timbers – have stood up well, and she makes next to no water on her mooring. After 30 years in the same ownership, she deserves a new owner who can wield a paint brush. Her Yanmar IGM10 diesel is a few years old, with very low hours. Her six Richardson sails are good for many more miles. Her varnished Noble mast is almost as new. An archive of photos and documents includes her original bill of sale from Elkins, her Blue Book and much more. With a clear bill of health from a recent survey, she is for sale at £15,000. A sheltered mooring is available, just across the loch from wooden boatbuilders Johnson & Loftus where she is slipped annually for maintenance.

SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE

Here’s a rare chance to buy a recent Spirit. It seems hardly necessary to say, such has been the company’s success in the last two decades, but this is a wood-epoxy, spirit-of-tradition yacht – classic looking above decks, and modern below the waterline. All Spirits are (a least!) semi bespoke and this one has good eco credentials, luxury all in natural materials, and an electric drive system with propeller regeneration. These larger Spirits are fast, capable boats, quite capable of competitive regatta participation, but they tend to be popular with couples who want to cruise far. “In our view, the 46 and 52 were among the most successful Spirit Yachts designs, and for good reason,” says the broker. “But at 65ft (19.8m), the deckhouse proportions really work and the concept probably reaches its sweet spot – a beautifully timeless aesthetic – and could easily be sailed by two people only. Elegance combined with modern handling above and below the waterline, and great craftsmanship, are of course a Spirit Yachts specialty, but it takes commissioning owners with vision to create a boat like Spirit of Josephine . From natural zinc surfaces to Harris Tweed chesterfields, she leaves you wanting to spend time aboard. This is no average boat: Spirit of Josephine is a modern classic with an awful lot of soul.
