Naish Matador S26

nash 26 sailboat review

Well-known and long-established Hawaiian watersports goliath Naish were on board very early with the whole wing concept, bringing the first production model to market with the original 4m Wing-Surfer. They then succeeded with the S25 version with some large windows and a more comprehensive size range last year. For S26 the wing range splits into two discipline defined models, with the new Matador focusing on wave performance, available in sensibly chosen wave savvy sizes of 3, 4 and 5m.

Out of the bag, you’re in for a visual treat with an all-new radial canopy seaming arrangement originating from the clew (or back end of the strut for the less nautically inclined). Windows have been minimized in comparison to the Wing-Surfer S26, with two arrow slit style PVC portholes located a little less than halfway along the strut. This is an obvious nod towards weight saving and balancing the weight further forward for flagging out the wing. There’s adequate vision to peek through and get some awareness of what’s around you without compromising overall weight. The turned in tips minimize the span and chance of catching the wing on the water and also make the wing really easy to pivot and switch directions on. This is noticeable when throwing the Matador into a 360 or duck jibe, producing a consistent and satisfying maneuver. Power delivery once flying is easy to turn on and off quickly with minimal angle adjustment, but remains progressive; the easy to initiate power on tap does an admirable job of getting you in the right position on the wave with adequate speed before you decide to flag the wing. The relatively soft dihedral sweep in the wing keeps a lot of sail area exposed to the wind when riding, which no doubt contributes towards the Matador’s grunty per size nature.

Five short loop handles are placed in two groups over the length of the strut which are relatively stiff and a comfortable width for gripping. These are well placed, and we found the second front handle ideal for pumping up in lighter wind, really allowing you to have good clearance between the nose of your board and the wingtip, which is important for aggressive pumping in the lower echelons of the wind range. There are also some removable Y handles which loop on and off with some simple Dyneema connections, which prove useful for beginner and shorter people or those that prefer a few more handles for transfer. These also allow you to micro trim with your front hand if required. If you are more of a minimalist, they are quick to remove and will save further weight and packing space. Inflation is handled with a single iSUP valve and high flow pipe to the strut making it quick and efficient to get up to pressure.

The thick leading edge and inherent stiffness that comes along with the extra structure, coupled with the deep profile, generate really good low end grunt for a 5m, making getting onto the foil a simple process, which is important for a wave focused product where you want to be carrying as little wing as possible on the wave. What we weren’t expecting with these attributes is a decent level of upwind performance, where the Matador is impressive. When luffing the wing on a wave, it’s obvious the weight bias is towards the leading edge and it doesn’t drop out on you.

Peripherals-wise, Naish have provided a short coil leash with constricting cuff and buckle arrangement which velcros on reassuringly tightly. The bag is a small and simple tube affair with a drawstring top, single shoulder strap, and the smaller PVC windows mean it packs down to something far more compact than the previous Wing-Surfer Y25. They’ve also included some bungees and Velcro to attach your pump which is practical if your spot has a longer walk in.

The Matador is a true third generation product, and its clear intended direction for wave use is indicative of the quickly maturing discipline. Its predictable characteristics when flagged help open up more critical and aggressive turns on the wave without having to be conscious of the wing dropping, which is evident even with onshore conditions. The short and squat nature makes handling it as easy as it gets, and it definitely packs a punch power-wise per size.

Hi here fellow water people.... I guess I should ask this before I buy, but I have already (just) bought a Nash 26 (~1981) I'm looking for anyone with documentation/manuals that is willing to scan/copy/share (my expense) so I have something to work with as I take over. I'm int he Toronto area if anyone is local Thanks in Advance... Tom

Try sending an e-mail to Paul F. Charbonneau at paulfc at simpatico dot ca His is sort of the class secretary for the Nash 26. I have the sailplan dimensions but nothing else on file for that boat. All the best, Robert Gainer

I actually did - got his name from goodoldboat - it bounced, unfortunately Thanks anyway T

Gary M

I can tell you that the Nash 26 was built in Alsia Craig, Ontario by Joe Nash. I believe he designed and built them. I sailed with him once when I was considering buying a Nash 20 out of Grand Bend. I do not have any other information, sorry. Gary

Nash 26 is a 25 ′ 11 ″ / 7.9 m monohull sailboat designed by Joe Nash and built by Nash Industries starting in 1975.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of Nash 26

Basic specs., sailing characteristics.

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Nash 26 is 1.96, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Nash 26 is about 112 kg/cm, alternatively 629 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 112 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 629 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Good work! Modular handles are coming! The Ocean Rodeo Glide should have them, but details are a bit thin for the moment. All they say is “MATRIX HANDLE SYSTEM Quick change handles. Mix and match to your riding style.”

Reuben Ellis

Thanks for the heads up. It will be good to see the developments in the future and all the new names

The real highlight of the Glide wing is the next generation Aluula material – half the weight but twice the strength of Dacron. Potentially game changing, if very expensive! The HL Glide is part Aluula, but the A Series Glide has full Aluula airframe, suggesting 40% lighter than a Dacron wing. Have pre orderer HL 5 and 6m Glides – very excited!

The boat has a draft of 3.83 ft (1.17 m) with the standard keel fitted. [1] [3]

The boat has a PHRF racing average handicap of 231 and a hull speed of 6.18 kn (11.45 km/h). [2] [3]

Operational history

In a review Michael McGoldrick wrote, "The Nash 26 ... is a relatively large 26 footer with a nice interior layout which includes the maximum in the way of cruising amenities for a boat in this size range. Despite the priority placed on interior space, it still has acceptable proportions for a cruising boat, although some later Nash 26s appear to have been built with a slightly boxy-looking cabin." KITESURFING

Tested: NAISH S26 MA 1000 AND KITE 810

FOIL: NAISH S26 MA 1000 AND KITE 810

The S26 foil lineup is constructed from high quality 100 per cent, 3K pre-preg carbon on both the front and back wings. The S26 fuselage is 64 cm in length and features an aluminum construction which is compatible across all the wings. Naish has both full carbon masts or a hybrid 30 per cent carbon, in addition to aluminum masts available for this season in 95 or 70 cm lengths. The 810 wing, as the middle size of the range provides the best combo of early lift, smooth carving turns and amazing control at higher speeds. The test team were impressed with how quick and nimble this set up was but also the early lift and ease of use makes it a standout. The 810 was the quickest and most comfortable set up at faster pulling speeds with less tendency to feel out of control or overly draggy at higher speeds and wind pressure. The S26 foil range is also launching an MA Series of wings for 2022 and the test team had the opportunity to ride one of these in the 1000 cm² size. The MA series front wings evolved from the high aspect wing being used in the surfing and wing disciplines. The result is this very efficient and nimble foil performance from the MA 1000. Although there is less pumping efficiency (which isn’t needed when there is power generation from a kite, sail or wing) the MA 1000 has plenty of early lift for it size and is stable but offers more nimble and loose handling over a huge speed range.

DECK: NAISH HOVER KITE

SIZE: 112 X 43.2 X 4.1 CM/12 L

The Hover Kite 112 from Naish is a compact shape that keeps things nimble and reactive but with enough surface area to avoid burying the nose when coming off a foil. The Hover kite series of decks includes four sizes of board for different rider sizes and skill levels. The nice thin deck is stiff, reactive and gives the rider more of a direct feel. Revised and finely tuned over the past few seasons, this year the rails have been made thinner and the nose has slightly more scoop. All of the Hover series have the nice diamond grip textured EVA foam with raised tail pad and lots of options for foot strap placement. The 112 was the shortest and most nimble deck we had in this test and it’s best suited to intermediate to advanced riders that don’t need as much float for take offs or touch downs. Overall great quality in construction and the adjustable track system makes this deck compatible with any four-bolt plated foil.

The S26 really delivers the power that the S25 was missing. And also the new removable Y handles really do mean you have the ability to customise your wing that bit more.
