About Trawler Yachts

Trawlers Characteristics: Trawlers are generally defined as motor yachts that boast fuel efficiency, rugged lines, sea worthy hull designs for long-distance cruising, and interior layouts that are beneficial for liveaboard yacht owners.

Trawler Construction & Hull Design: Beginning in the 1970's, most trawlers are fiberglass-construction. However, many large trawlers, and expedition yachts over 75', are built with steel and aluminum hulls and superstructures. Classic trawlers and motor yachts were typically built out of wood. With a caring owner, many of these trawlers are still in use today.

Trawlers with full-displacement hulls are for yachtsmen that place a high value on distance, comfort, and safety over speed. Trawlers typically have deeper drafts (with a skeg or keel deeper than the propellers so that the running gear and propellers aren't damaged if the hull touches the bottom).

Trawlers are usually designed with a round chine, or hull configuration with a curve near the waterline instead of a hard chine typically found on semi-displacement motor yachts. This hull design has been proven over many centuries to be the most efficient at lower speeds. Of course, this hull design also allows a higher volume of interior space, which benefits long-range cruising as well. Many trawlers and expedition yachts utilize stabilizers to minimize rolling at sea.

Bulbous bows can also be found on larger displacement trawlers. Large commercial vessels use this protruding underwater stem to break the water in front of the vessel and thus reduce the friction of movement, which results in a more efficient hull design. Yachts may use them for the same effect as well as for possible attributes in reducing pitch, or fore and aft motion. The most popular Trawlers built with bulbous bow options are Selene Trawlers , and Nordhavn Yachts (both full-displacement trawler builders as well).

Trawler Power Options: Trawlers are usually powered with single engines to achieve better efficiency for longer-distance cruising. However, many trawlers are fitted with a second engine, or a get-home generator that will assist owners if the single engine were to fail.

Ocean-Cruising on a Trawler: Many trawler owners are enticed to the idea of owning a large trawler or expedition yacht so they have the ability to cross oceans and explore the far reaches of the globe. Trawler owners that desire to explore extreme parts of the world, like Antartcia, and the North Atlantic, will want a long-range yacht with special reinforcements, especially around the bow waterline area. Ice breaking hulls will offer another layer of protection for boats traveling in oceans with icebergs, and other frozen debris which of course can be harmful to even the world's largest megayachts and cruise ships.

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center. 

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city. 

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

• The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
• Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
• Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
• The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

“UCODE DNA is considered the only identification technology to match the physical protection of a barrier with the cybersecurity necessary to truly protect entrances from unauthorized access,” said Manuel Haertlé, senior product manager for FEIG Electronic. “As a respected contactless payment technology company, FEIG applies security know-how from its payment terminals, which are fully certified according to the latest high-class security standards, into our RFID systems. FEIG vehicle access control RFID readers incorporate advanced secure key storage elements, supporting various methods for secure key injection.”

FEIG’s partner ISBC Group provided the knowledge and support for this successful implementation using  FEIG’s long-range UHF RFID . The resulting system enables authorized vehicle entry into areas reserved for private residential use or corporate tenants, while also allowing availability of temporary, fee-based visitor parking. Thanks to the cryptographic authentication of UCODE DNA, both the tag and reader must go through an authentication procedure before the reader will validate the data from the tag, which is transmitted wirelessly. This level of authentication is typically used in the most secure data communication networks.

“The system’s two-step authentication means that only authorized equipment can handle the secure protocol and the data exchange with the UCODE DNA based tag. Without the required cryptographic secrets, other readers would query the tag in vain, because the tag’s response cannot be interpreted or understood,” said Andrey Krasovskiy, director of the RFID department at ISBC Group. “On top of this, each data exchange in the authentication process is unique, so even if a malicious actor were to intercept the communication, the transmission is only good for a single exchange and the tag’s unique identity is protected from cloning.”

Established in 1992 and still growing, Moscow-City is the revitalization and transformation of an industrial riverfront into a new, modern, vibrant and upscale business and residential district. A mix of residential, hotel, office, retail and entertainment facilities, it is located about four kilometers west of Red Square along the Moscow River. Twelve of the twenty-three planned facilities have already been completed, with seven currently under construction. Six skyscrapers in Moscow-City reach a height of at least 300 meters, including Europe’s tallest building, Federation Tower, which rises more than 100 stories.

Suspected Ukraine drone strikes in Moscow are increasing, but will it have much impact on the war?

Drone strikes on Moscow have been rapidly increasing and analysts say they are unlikely to slow down anytime soon. 

Last week, Russia said it shot down two drones near the capital, with the defence ministry reporting 12 were aimed at Moscow in recent weeks. 

Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the wave of attacks, but  President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has teased at involvement, saying late last month that "the war is gradually coming back to Russian territory".

Reports and analysis have also identified that Ukrainian-made long-range drones were likely used to hit targets in Moscow.

Given the ramp up in the development of locally-produced Kamikaze drones that can fly several hundred kilometres, there is speculation a mass drone strike may not be far off.

According to Samuel Bendett, a Russian military weapons expert at the US Center for Naval Analyses, this could be "truly massive".

"Not a few, but a hundred or more drones attacking Moscow at once," Mr Bendett told the ABC.

"If Ukraine can launch half a dozen and they can penetrate through air defences, what's stopping them from launching dozens at once?"

This is what we know so far about what's being targeted and Ukraine's capabilities.

What's being targeted?

After months of drone spottings on the outskirts of Russia, the first reported strike on the capital hit on May 3.

Dramatic footage emerged of two explosions lighting up the skies above the dome of the Kremlin Senate building.

Russia's version of events is that Ukraine targeted the president's residence with two drones in an assassination attempt, which Kyiv denies. 

Although there was initial speculation that the attack was a false flag operation, even US officials have since said they believe Ukraine was to blame.

Since then, Moscow — which lies about 500 kilometres from the Ukrainian border — has been hit by several drone attacks.

Only minor damage has been reported, and no incidents have resulted in any deaths. 

Brynn Tannehill, a senior defence analyst at think tank RAND and a former aviator in the US Navy, said she was not surprised that Kyiv appeared to be increasingly using its long-range drones. 

"We've ascertained now that the drone strikes from May weren't an inside job ... It was likely Ukraine or people affiliated with Ukraine," Ms Tannehill told the ABC. 

"So this is kind of following a trend that I expected."

So far, the targets have been varied.

The first multiple drone attack on Moscow in late May reportedly hit a residential building and high-rise apartments in the western outskirts of the city. 

Russia's defence ministry said eight "enemy drones" were shot down and only caused minor damage, calling the event a "terrorist attack".

Three were downed over the exclusive Rublyovka suburb, where President Vladimir Putin has an official residence.

Drone attacks caused disruptions and closures at Moscow's Vnukovo International Airport in July and early August.    

Earlier this month  there were also repeated attacks on buildings in the IQ Quarter that houses key ministries in the Russian government.

"We saw pictures of classified documents raining down on the streets," MsTannehill said. 

Mr Bendett said targeting the same type of building in the same location demonstrated the unmanned aerial vehicles' (UAV) sophisticated targeting and intelligence gathering capabilities.

"The fact that there are other strikes within Russia, where a lot of UAVs are [either] shot down or they actually strike their targets, is also indicative of the fact that Ukraine is trying different tactics," he said. 

Outside the capital, ports and infrastructure have been targeted, as well as ammunition warehouses and a nuclear power station, according to Russian authorities. 

"From a Ukrainian perspective, if they can actually hit infrastructure targets that will interfere with the Russian war effort, great," MsTannehill said. 

The Bryansk and Belgorod regions  near the western border with Ukraine, and the Russian-annexed Crimea, have reportedly been copping the most attacks. 

Maritime drones are also being increasingly used in the Black Sea , with recent alleged strikes on a Russian chemical tanker and multiple warships. 

Which drones are being used?

Based on drone sightings and footage of wreckages, analysts have identified Ukraine's UJ-22 and Bober "Beaver" drones being involved in many of the attacks.

It is likely other types of drones are also being used and several more are in the production pipeline, Mr Bendett says.   

"Ukraine is gearing up to unveil multiple types of kamikaze — one way drones — with a range of several hundred kilometres," he said.

The UJ-22 was suspected of being used in the Kremlin attack , and strikes on the wealthy residential Rublyovka district. 

Developed by the Ukrainian firm UKRJET, it has the range capabilities to reach targets deep within Moscow, but its payload limits it from causing too much damage.

The drone can carry up to four 82mm mortar mines or four RPG-7 grenades. 

There is still little information available about the Beaver, which was initially a project launched by volunteers in the war effort before it was picked up by the Ukrainian military.

"It has become sort of this military project now with different industrial capabilities, which made the drone a lot more powerful," Mr Bendett said. 

It is believed to have a range of between 600 and 1,000 kilometres and a wingspan of about 2.5 metres.

There is speculation it was used in the strikes on the IQ Quarter building.

While the Beaver has been described as being broadly similar to the Iranian-made Shahed 136 kamikaze drones used by Russia, it may not have the same explosive power. 

"There's a trade-off in the development of these UAVs … either it carries a big charge but doesn't fly very far, or it can fly very far but doesn't have a big explosive charge on it," Mr Bendett said.

"It looks like Ukraine is using the latter … the ones that penetrate Moscow don't have big explosives, but they demonstrate the capacity to fly all the way from Ukraine and into Russia."

The Shahed 136 is loaded with built-in ammunition in the nose of the drone.

It has an explosive payload of around 36 kilograms, which is relatively low, but they have proven to cause significant damage. 

Russia has been accused of  using drones to disable critical power and water infrastructure in Ukraine , particularly in the capital Kyiv.

They are also often deployed in large numbers, which makes them more likely to break through air defences.

While Ms Tannehill believes it's "very plausible" that Ukraine could soon stage larger scale drone strikes in Russian territory, she says it won't be able to keep up with the production levels of Shaheds.  

"Iran is not in the middle of having its economy ravaged. Ukraine's took a 35 per cent GDP hit in 2022," Ms Tannehill said. 

"Ukraine is indigenously producing drones and ramping up their entire economy ...    a lot of these are going almost straight from prototype to production with relatively small businesses."

What's Ukraine's aim?

Mr Bendett said there were probably different reasons for each strike.

Some analysts say hitting targets in Moscow is a form of "psychological warfare".

But Mr Bendett said while the attacks might make Moscovites stressed or uneasy, they were unlikely to have much of an impact. 

Even a mass drone strike would be more for "shock and awe", he said. 

"They [Ukraine] can indicate to the Moscow population that it's not safe, just like the Ukrainian population is not safe from Russian drone strikes.

"Would that actually impact the Russian president's decision to continue the war? The likely answer is no."

Ms Tannehill said air strikes rarely have much of a psychological effect in terms of breaking people down, especially when attacks so far in Moscow have been "little tiny pinpricks".  

She said there appeared to be a wider strategy to continue hitting targets that would cause problems for Russia's logistics and transportation, or "bung up or interfere with their command and control capabilities".

Ukraine may also be attempting to make Russia disperse its air defences. 

Continued and larger strikes may force Moscow to pull resources away from Ukraine and bring its short-range air defences back to protect critical places inside Russia.

"You still achieve a significant effect if Russia is pulling back a lot of its best air defences deep within Russia and having to scatter them deep inside the country,” Ms Tannehill said.

The US and the UN have condemned the drone attacks in Moscow, but Mr Zelenskyy has said that attacks on Russian territory were an "inevitable, natural and absolutely fair process".

"The frequency isn't letting up … the frequency is only increasing," Mr Bendett said. 

"Obviously, there's a reason for the Ukrainian military's … attacks, but the question remaining for outside observers is whether strikes on cities are going to achieve a desired result."
