“Lotus restaurant at the Canberra Yacht Club” Review of Canberra Southern Cross Club - Woden

The Woden Venue

We went there last evening with a visitor from Montreal. We arrived at 7.30pm; parking was very tight. It was quite busy and we hadn't booked, but we got a table with a lake view. It's a lovely place to eat on a summer evening, but if you're booking ahead ask for a window table. The food was lovely. We shared a garlic bread, then had surf and turf (nice tender steak and 3 big juicy prawns), braised wagyu beef (tasty and tender) and linguine marinara (tasty, 4 mussels in the shell, prawns, one bit of squid and one small scallop). The home-made trio of gelati was a delicious ending. With 2 desserts, 3 coffees and a bottle of "wine of the month" the bill came to $160. The service was a bit lackadaisical - perhaps we were just unlucky with our waitress, who forgot our wine, forgot to order our mains from the kitchen and seemed more interested in wiping down tables than serving! However, we had a delightful meal and a very pleasant evening.

Dear Anne D, Thank you for your positive comments, we are glad to hear you enjoyed your meals. We were disappointed to hear that the service did not meet both yours and the Clubs expectation, however feedback is always helpful in that they allow us to address the problems raised. The Snapper Café at the Canberra Yacht Club in Yarralumla is open to everyone. Parking can be tight. The outdoor area is pleasant with nice views of the lake and city skyline. The seagulls add a particularly authentic feel as they hassle diners for the odd chip or two! The battered fish was OK, the chips were OK, the wine in the plastic glass was OK. We didn't stay for coffee and a nice array of cakes. To be positive about this place, in a city that is woefully short of places to eat with a view, congratulations to the Canberra Yacht Club. The restaurant upstairs for members is excellent and Snapper Café can only get better. I recommend it simply because the effort has been made and I hope lots of people get to know it and enjoy it. And give feedback to management about what we really want - fresh oysters!

Dear MaryannM53, Thank you so much for taking the time to write your review about Snapper at the Canberra Southern Cross Yacht Club. We're glad you enjoyed the outdoor area and the beautiful lake views. We hope to welcome you back this new year for a coffee and some delicious treats! Kind regards Anna Coward Communication Coordinator

The layout of the room was good and everyone was comfortable inside out of the wind but the room did get hot after a couple of hours and we asked for the air con to be turned on, but then it was too cold. The nearest toilets were the public toilets which were not maintained and I walked out of there very quickly after not even getting into the cubicle. The other toilets were inside the club and further to get to. It was my mums 90th and she is in a wheel chair, so it was a big effort to get from the marquis to the upstairs disabled toilet and when we opened the door, we immediately reversed out because it was disgusting. So we had to navigate her into the other toilets and of course the wheelchair did not fit, so my sister and I had to carry her in. I have travelled extensively over asia, so I have seen some interesting facilities, but these were pretty bad.

Visited the CSC Yacht Club for the much anticipated, relocated informal Outdoor Fish and Chip Shop only to find that construction was not finished 2 weeks after the announced opening date. So ordered fish and chips from bar menu options. After being told we could not be served in the attractive outdoor seating area because of 'insurance', the 'flathead' tasted like indeterminate, ground-up watery mush coated in batter and deep fried in stale oil. Chips were stale and cold and the same oily rancid taste was evident to the extent the meal was largely uneatable. Cost was $60 for two servings and a glass of wine each. On commenting to the (very pleasant) bar staff on the quality of the meal, was told the chef (s) were relatively new and didn't have much experience in large orders. This is unacceptable and particularly so given the location, which warrants much higher standards. The CSC cannot rely on the lake view alone for customers to return unless the quality of food dramatically improves and/or the prices are lowered - preferably both.

Dear WalkingCatrina, Thank you for your comments made on September 21, 2014, in regards to your recent visit to the Southern Cross Yacht Club. I am disappointed that your meal did not meet both yours and the Clubs expectation and while it is always disappointing to receive complaints about our food and service, such complaints are always helpful in that they allow us to address the problems raised. The Venue Manager is already investigating your comments. Can I ask you to get contact the Venue Manager Matt Walshe on 02 62837200 or [email protected] to assist with the investigation. Yours Sincerely, Anna Coward Communications Coordinator

Restaurant was wonderful. Service was great and staff very accommodating even when I had miscalculated the number in our group and it was over 30 in the end. Food was great, great value for money and served very quickly Thanks again guys.

Dear 902MEL66, Thank you for your positive comments, we are pleased to hear you enjoyed your time at our Woden venue. We hope you'll visit us again soon and congratulations to the bride and groom-to-be! Kind regards, Anna Coward Communications Coordinator Canberra Southern Cross Club
