Folding Features for the 21st Century and Beyond

To enable easy and more affordable single-berthing at marinas around the world, the Rapido 40 is a folding trimaran. The outer floats fold in against the main hull to keep her beam narrow enough for single berths. Unlike some folding trimarans, however, the Rapido 40, when folded, retains excellent stability and the floats remain upright so there are no growth issues or need for bottom paint on the sides of the floats. The upright floats are also a breeze to walk on whether boarding from the dock or handling lines when coming into a dock

The C-Foils in each outer hull, replace a daggerboard located in the main hull, and give the Rapido 40 a massive performance boost both upwind and downwind without adding a lot of complexity. For normal day sailing or cruising both can be in the “down" position. For less drag when racing or simply looking for more speed, the weather C-Foil is easily raised.

General Information

FAST AND POWERFUL Trimarans are the fastest and most powerful design type as demonstrated by the fact that trimarans currently hold most point-to-point, and 24-hour speed records, including the singlehanded around the world speed record. These records require power and low drag in light air, pointing ability when forecasts prove wrong, and the ability to de-power and still sail at top speed when the weather gets a bit sporty.

SAFETY Speed can increase safety when cruising especially as the Rapido line of trimarans has sailing top speeds that will outrun or help avoid storm systems.

SPACIOUS The Rapido 40 has some truly amazing living spaces both down below and on deck. With trampolines between the main and outer hulls, an aft cabin, a forward cabin, both separate from the main cabin, and a large amount of seating on deck,

Rapido 40 : A livable sailboat for cruising on 3 hulls

The Rapido Trimarans shipyard has launched the first example of its new Rapido 40, a 40-foot carbon multihull designed for fast, offshore cruising.

A new trimaran by Melvin&Morrelli

Rapido Trimaran has just finished building the first unit of its new Rapido 40. The new multihull from the Vietnam-based shipyard is the smallest in its catalog, alongside the Rapido 50 and Rapido 60. Designed like the rest of the range by the naval architects Morrelli & Melvin, specialists in multihulls who have worked with HH Catamarans , Leopard Catamarans and Gunboat , it aims to be the best performing folding trimaran in its size range, offering both accommodation and the possibility of offshore sailing, with a category A certification.

Carbon boat and C foils

To reach these objectives, the boat can count on beautiful measurements and a careful construction in technical materials. The trimaran is entirely built in carbon fiber. The hulls and decks are made of infused sandwich, while the beams and appendages are made of pre-preg fabric with post-curing in autoclave.

The sailboat of 12 meters length has a width of 8,80 meters and only 5,20 meters folded arms. The manufacturing process allows to announce a displacement in minimal configuration of 4 745 kg and 6 135 kg in full load.

With a mainsail surface of 65 m², associated with 7 m² of wing mast and 32 m² of solent, the polars of the shipyard anticipate a speed of 26 knots in 20 knots of wind. The asymmetrical spinnaker of 158 m² should allow to reach 25 knots at 120° of the wind in 20 knots. For this, the boat will be able to rely on its C-shaped daggerboards and its T-shaped support plane on the rudder, offering additional power.

A boat equipped for ocean cruising

If the Rapido 40 is aiming for the podium in a race, it is also designed to accommodate its crew over the long term. In addition to its Category A certification, its layout allows for real life on board . Under the roof, with a panoramic view, there is a comfortable saloon with a galley along the starboard side and a chart table. An owner's cabin, with its bathroom, is located forward of the saloon, while a nice guest cabin with a large double bed is accessible aft of the cockpit.

The Triac Composites shipyard and the enormous experience of its team produces a wonderful range of high-performance trimarans from 40 to 60 feet out of its base at Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), in Vietnam. The manufacturer has just unveiled the very first images of its latest “little” boat, the Rapido 40. Trick of the light - that's its name - has shown good average speeds right from its first sail.

This model, in the Racer version, can be boosted with C-foils and a carbon rig. While the central hull has a very narrow beam at the waterline, reasonable volume is nevertheless ensured inside, thanks to a marked chine. The floats are particularly voluminous, obviously guaranteeing good strength. And when you go alongside in port, they fold backwards: the beam is reduced from 28’10” (8.80 m) at sea down to 16’1” (4.90 m). Why a rapido trimaran.

Why would you want to cruise on anything other than a Rapido Trimaran if you want the following:

• A stable boat which doesn’t heel.
• A boat that loves long distances, short sprints and the passage between.
• Discovering places that others cannot venture to when you sneak up alongside a secluded beach or glide over a reef (the draft of the Rapido 60 is just 0.75m with the rudder and daggerboard retracted).

General Information

The rapido 40 – the world’s ultimate folding, all carbon, ocean-cruising trimaran.

World acclaimed designers,  Morrelli & Melvin  have ensured that the DNA of the Rapido 60 has been incorporated into the all carbon and folding Rapido 40. Expect a state of the art trimaran designed and built for:

• Podium performances
• Fast passage-making
• Classic cruising
• Couples; and

The Rapido 40 is designed and engineered as a high tech, all-carbon, performance cruiser with a s elf-tacking jib, c arbon spreaderless mast and an o ption for rolling furl boom.

The interiors have super lightweight, strong, custom made furniture; even the countertops are carbon! The flooring is made from cork.

While others are compelled to motor away from any weather systems best avoided, the Rapido can be powered up to simply sail away with the skipper maintaining complete control.

Safety is a big factor in our design and construction. As well as carbon-foam construction, there are numerous watertight bulkheads and bulkheads with no through penetrations below the water line. The engine compartment is contained within watertight bulkheads.

We build our own epoxy prepreg autoclave-cured mast and boom (designed by Morrelli & Melvin , specifically for the Rapido 40), dagger C foils, rudders, beams, chainplate bulkheads, folding struts, pulpits, seats, drawers for galley, table and benchtop in galley.

Essentially, if you have a passion for sailing, this is the boat for you!

The Rapido 40 is being built by Rapido Trimarans' exclusive builder,  Triac Composites .

The asymmetric twin “C” foils will give the Rapido 40 more lift than usual resulting in significant increase in performance, both upwind and downwind. Also, the C foils eliminate the need for a central daggerboard which increases the amount of interior space. It also creates 360 degree visibility. (In the diagram above, note the “T" rudder foil in the “down" position.)

For normal day sailing or cruising, both C foils can be in the “down" position or one raised without adding material drag.
