A range of fast-paced, sleek and modern-looking boats from Hudson Yacht & Marine based in south-west China will include cats from 55ft to 115ft, reports Elaine Bunting

HH Catamarans is a name you may not have heard of (yet), but behind this new brand is one of the largest-scale investments and boldest thinking in some years. The plans are ambitious, with a range of big, fast, luxurious catamarans up to superyacht scale.

The company is Hudson Yacht & Marine, based in south-west China, which sees its main market in Europe and the US, hence its appearance in Annapolis.

At the new facility in Xiamen, an island city lying between Hong Kong and Shanghai, the first is being built of what is to be a range of catamarans from 55ft to 115ft: the HH55, HH66, HH77, HH88 and HH115.

Rendering of the HH88

Rendering of the HH88

Four HH66s have been sold and are already in production. The first is due to launch in February for an Asian owner, and tooling for the HH55 is underway.

If the appearance of these resembles the Gunboat range more than the average production cruising cat, that is hardly surprising: the designs are the work of Morrelli & Melvin, the design team responsible for 18 Gunboats, and whose expertise in performance multihulls over the years spans A Class and Nacra catamarans to the late Steve Fossett’s PlayStation and, more recently, BMW Oracle Racing.

All will be fast-paced, sleek and modern-looking boats aimed at fast passagemaking and comfortable open plan ‘indoor/outdoor’ living. The HH55 and HH66 are styled as ‘a light and strong raceboat in disguise’. The HH66 is in composite construction, primarily aimed at cruising but, according to Morrelli & Melvin, “able to kick it up a notch”. So it is ultra light, and has C-shape daggerboards and T-foil rudders.

HH55_001_H_FWD CockPit (9)

The HH55 is available in two configurations: forward cockpit and centre steering or dual aft steering and either in full-on performance-mode carbon composite construction or a less costly epoxy/E-Glass alternative. It, too, features C-shape daggerboards and T-foil rudders.

NZ builder brought in

Besides commissioning Morrelli & Melvin for the designs, owner Hudson Wang brought in New Zealand boatbuilder Paul Hakes four years ago. Hakes, a well known racing boat builder very experienced in building in pre-preg carbon, admits that he was “quite taken aback” by the scale of the company’s commitment to building boats – to date it has spent US$50m on building a boatyard. In that time Hakes has built several of the Judel Vrojlik-designed HH42, the best known example of which is Richard Matthews’s Oystercatcher XXX .

Hudson sees yacht manufacture as part of a serial manufacturing operation. The company’s products are wide-ranging. It produces around 20 per cent of baseball bats bought in the US, makes aircraft escape slides, barbecues and coolers, and employs some 4,000 people, of which 400 are in the boatyard. Its history in boats goes back to building J/80s and RIBs.

Tooling for the HH55 is also well underway. Paul Hakes tells us that the yard has finished a new fit-out hall and now has capability to have four or five HH66s and five to six HH55s in build at a time.

HH88_saloon_1

Preliminary drawings for the HH88 have been done and sufficient structural detail to allow price estimates. Designer Gino Morrelli says that the company is in talks with two potential owners.

Morrelli emphasises that the range could also go beyond the 115-footer currently planned. “We think the yard has capability to go to 150ft and they’ve built their new building to get that out the door, as that is where we think we will be in five to six years.”

Each of these boats can be highly customised, and renderings show very modern interiors. The zingy hull colours illustrated emphasise the message that Hudson is aiming to appeal to owners not hidebound by tradition, and perhaps migrating from motorboats.

The fact that the business has put its weight so strongly behind multihull production is yet another indication of growing interest in this area of sailing. “As far as the sailing market is concerned, the share of multihulls is growing, and bigger boats are coming out [of the downturn] faster than smaller boats,” says Morrelli.

Shipyard: Aquila soars like an eagle

  • October 18, 2023

A collaboration between Sino Eagle and MarineMax, Aquila has become the world’s largest powercat builder in its first decade, with all its 28-70ft models produced at its ultra-modern, purpose-built facility in Hangzhou. Words: Barry Thompson; Photos: Aquila

The 11-hectare Aquila facility includes four construction buildings, an indoor test pool, riverside launching and a modern office block

It has been over a decade since the Aquila 48 premiered at the Miami International Boat Show in February 2013 before being put into the MarineMax Vacations charter fleet.

US-based MarineMax, the world’s largest yacht dealership, had announced the model at the previous year’s show, having established a collaboration with Chinese manufacturer Sino Eagle, which had already produced the Aquila 38, a model that sold about a dozen units.

Lex Raas initiated the cooperation by connecting MarineMax co-founder Bill McGill, then CEO, with Frank Xiong and the Xiong family, owners of Sino Eagle, a leader in high-tech composite manufacturing. Other key early players included J&J Design Group and Seaway.

Sino Eagle established a dedicated Aquila factory in the attractive inland city of Hangzhou, southwest of Shanghai, which provided the brand with full in-house manufacturing capabilities. Latin for eagle, Aquila has since soared to become the global leader in power catamaran production, today producing models from 28-70ft across the offshore (Molokai), Sport and Yacht ranges.

CLEAN & GREEN

The site has since been expanded and today the 11-hectare (110,000sqm) facility comprises four massive construction buildings, an indoor test pool, riverside launching facilities and an ultra-modern

administration block.

Hangzhou is often revered as one of China’s most beautiful cities and is paired with another lakeside city in the Chinese proverb: “In heaven there is paradise, on earth there are Hangzhou and Suzhou.”

In Hangzhou, Aquila has over 500 employees in the office and its modern production facility owned by Sino Eagle

The Aquila factory reinforces that sentiment and is genuinely impressive. ‘State-of-the-art’ is an often-misused description of a modern, technologically advanced production facility, but in Aquila’s case, it’s absolutely warranted.

While the factory has not gone to full robotics – Aquila employs over 500 factory and office workers – the construction methods, quality control and overall management of every aspect is exceptional. Their aim is for perfection in every aspect of the build process.

It’s also a ‘green’ factory, with significant effort made to reduce emissions. Sino Eagle has invested heavily in environmental protection to look after the environment and their employees. There are expansive solar panels on top of the factory roof, designated cutting rooms with strong evacuation fans to prevent dust collection inside the factory, and a filtration system for grey water.

Aquila has a 288m-long assembly factory

Tommy Qian, Aquila’s Sales Manager, explains: “We believe that the cleaner the environment in the factory, the better the quality of the parts and ultimately the better the finish of the boats.”

GLOBAL GROWTH

Since launching its 100th catamaran in 2017, Aquila’s production levels rose to almost 60 boats a year in 2018 and 2019. Output rose again in the Covid era, with annual production soaring to 110 units in 2021 and about 150 in 2022.

“This growth is largely due to having a strong professional, passionate team, the highest quality construction, a strong dealer network and the world’s best catamaran designers drawing up our boats,” Qian says.

There were about 50 boats in various stages of construction when the author toured

The US is by far Aquila’s largest market, accounting for 75 per cent of the company’s production, while sales in Europe, Australia and other markets continue to grow. Two of Raas’s sons work for the brand. Jean Raas is running all of Aquila’s new projects, while Alain Raas is the Aquila Brand Manager at MarineMax.

This year, the company has set a production target of close to 200. Qian says that target could be challenged by supply-chain issues, especially with larger components such as engines, generators and air-con systems. Composite materials and timbers are easier to control due to being available locally.

CNC cutting room

Qian feels that another reason for the success of Aquila is all the boats are built using high-tech composites, high-density PVC foam, with vinylester and resin infusion. Construction also includes high-density PVC/fibre, resin-infused/foam composite bulkheads rather than ply.

“Every component in an Aquila power catamaran is as good as we can source, either locally or from overseas suppliers, and we never compromise on quality,” Qian says.

A computer system tracks work progress on the production line, with the ability to pull up drawings for the workers. As part of the quality control, every component has a barcode and every worker an ID. Each product is allocated a time to complete the task and employees receive a bonus if they can pass the required quality checks in less time than is allocated.

The shipyard is truly state-of-the-art

“We work closely with our staff. If they can see a way to make our processes more efficient, we listen and, if necessary, implement the changes,” Qian says. “That way, we’re all working towards producing the best products we can in the most efficient time frame.”

MULTIPLE DESIGNERS

Slovenia-based J&J is the anchor designer for Aquila and has pencilled the 44 Yacht, 54 Yacht and flagship 70 Luxury, as well as the original 48, while it’s currently working on three new models in the Sport, Yacht and Luxury segments.

In recent years, Aquila has worked with other renowned designers including French studio VPLP Design, founded by Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot Prévost, which pencilled the 42 Yacht that debuted this year and is working on another model. Kirk Clarke from Hawaii designed the 28 Molokai in conjunction with Jure Zule, Aquila’s Chief Designer.

Aquila’s designers are working on new models with the likes of J&J Design, VPLP and Chris Peart

South African Chris Peart of Peart Yacht Design was responsible for the new 47 Molokai from the Offshore series and is working on another Molokai model and a Sport model with a patented foiling system.

Lex Raas says: “This will be a breakthrough design and incorporate a lot of the latest foil technology in the world. This is a super exciting boat.”

Morrelli & Melvin Design & Engineering was behind the brand’s 4.2m and 5.3m RIB powercats, which owners often choose as the tender for their Aquila catamaran, while the US studio is also responsible for the Aquila Hydro Glide Foil System option.

All upholstery is done in-house

Introduced on the 36 Sport, the system consists of a main hydrofoil slightly aft of midships that spans each hull, so bridging the tunnel and helping lift about 40 per cent of the hull’s weight out of the water at cruising speeds. Further aft, twin fins act like an aeroplane’s horizontal stabilisers to prevent porpoising at higher speeds.

TESTING & REFINING

Apart from the 28 Molokai, all Aquila model designs are CFD and FEA (Finite Element Analysis) tested for structure stresses to identify the high-load areas.

Raas says this is extremely important in the bulkheads of higher-speed powercats. It’s also why the fore and aft bulkheads on boats like the 70 Luxury and 47 Molokai are made of 100 per cent epoxy infused carbon, to be strong enough to accept the torsional loads and not get too heavy.

Aquila catamarans are built using vinylester and resin infusion, high-tech composites and high-density PVC foam

“Whenever we’re moving into new areas, we’ll also do a full test programme as soon as we can get a splash out of the hull,” Raas says. “We place a basic deck on and then ballast up to expected weights and then will rigorously test. This was done on the 36 Sport and 28 Molokai, and we’ll be doing the same with the next Sport model.”

Production of composites at the Aquila shipyard is based on emission-free closed moulding technologies used for all GRP components, from the smallest to the largest. The results are clear, lighter and stiffer boats. In addition, this technology is environmentally friendly by eliminating styrene emissions, which also protects workers.

Vinyl ester resins are infused and vacuum bagged. Resin Transfer Moulded (RTM) is used for hatches, which are frequently opened providing a gelcoat finish on both sides. Technical fibres, like biax, triax or quadriax rovings, are applied on specific high-stressed areas, and UDs (uni-directional fibres) and carbon fibres are also installed.

Woodwork is also done in-house

All structural panels, even small flat wing bulkheads or bracings, are made from PVC-cored composites, and high-density foams are used instead of plywood, which is only used to produce furniture.

Special care is taken to keep the workshops clean, well-lit and dust free. All areas where infusion is made are temperature and humidity controlled, with monitoring systems showing all figures on displays.

Qian says: “We run full pre-delivery checks on every boat, either on the river or the smaller boats in our indoor test tank, before shipping them to our dealers. Once the boats are finished, depending on size, they are either trucked or barged to the Port of Shanghai for worldwide distribution.”

Aquila, shipyard, powercat, power catamaran, Sport, Offshore, Molokai, Yacht, flybridge, Lex Raas, Frank Xiong, Bill McGill, J&J, VPLP Design, Marc Van Peteghem, Vincent Lauriot Prévost, Kirk Clarke, Jure Zule, Chris Peart, Peart Yacht Design, Morrelli & Melvin, Design & Engineering

The build process is digitally monitored

Aquila also spends significant time on is propeller optimisation. Every boat the company launches undergoes an extensive in-house testing programme for props and engine heights. When managers are satisfied they’ve got the best results, the boats go to market.

Raas explains: “The recommended props are quite different to the final ones. The fact there are so many variances shows this is clearly not only a science but also requires a vigorous testing process. Adding in foils to the equation presents a whole new set of opportunities for optimisation.”

Aquila offers a five-year structural hull warranty, and all other equipment is under the manufacturer’s warranty.

EXPANDING RANGE

Aquila currently offers eight powercat models: the 28 Molokai and 47 Molokai high-speed fishing boats, the 32 Sport and 36 Sport cruisers, and the 42 Yacht, 44 Yacht, 54 Yacht and 70 Luxury flybridge models.

The 36 Sport is now Aquila’s most popular model, overtaking the long-standing 44 Yacht, with each model selling over 200 units.

The remarkable 54 Yacht has also been a hot item, with about 90 sales across the world and production booked through to late 2025. Depending on the model, delivery times are between 12-24 months.

The most recent addition to Aquila’s portfolio is the 47 Molokai, which features the company’s first double-stepped hull along with four outboards and can reach over 60 knots.

A world premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (October 25-29), the 47 Molokai combines fishing capabilities with luxury appointments and is the big sister of the well-established 28 Molokai.

The four-engine 47 Molokai is tested near the Aquila shipyard ahead of its world premiere

“We see the high-performance, centre-console outboard powercat market as one of the fastest expanding segments in the US,” Qian says. “The 28 Molokai has been extremely successful for us, so I’m confident the 47 Molokai will be a big seller.”

As illustrated by all the models in development with various designers, Aquila is continually developing new catamarans as market influences dictate, so expect much more from the shipyard over the coming years as it seeks to consolidate its leadership position in the powercat sector.

“We’re always open to suggestions,” Qian concludes. “We love feedback from our owners and dealers on how we can make what we already consider great boats even greater.”

The Power Catamaran Compilation

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: December 21, 2018

Power Catamarans have been growing leaps and bounds in popularity, and, in lengths and widths. And for good reason. These cruise-centric yachts offer homelike livability for avid travelers, are fuel efficient and are fairly intuitive to run. Power cats are popular in the bareboat charter market too, for these very reasons.

Here, we take a look at 12 catamarans ranging from a cruising-couple-size 36-footer to a 78-footer for friends, family and some more friends. And there are myriad power options: outboards, diesel inboards, hybrid or even all-solar power.

Fountaine Pajot MY44

fountain pajot my44

The Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

The ideas about which solar panels, electric motors, inverters and the like to use — and more importantly, Michael Köhler says, how to configure them — became the basis for the brand Silent-Yachts. The company offers 55-, 64- and 79-foot catamarans that run on solar-electric propulsion. The Silent 55 premiered this fall, and the 64 is sold out for the next two years, Köhler says.

Horizon PC74

As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.

“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.

The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the Horizon PC74 is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

aquila 36

The Aquila 36 is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.

With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat

Lagoon Seventy 8

Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC60

horizon pc60

To understand the Horizon PC60 power catamaran , you need to put aside preconceived notions about midsize yacht amenities. For example, main-deck master suites are the province of yachts over 100 feet length overall. Incorrect. This 60-footer has an elegant and spacious owner’s stateroom on the same level as the salon. If you want a 14-foot center console tender on a 60-foot yacht, you have to tow it. Wrong again. On the PC60, you hoist it onto the upper deck, no problem.

40 Open Sunreef Power

40 Open Sunreef Power

Sunreef is known for pushing the boundaries of catamaran design, incorporating four adjustable hydrofoils into a twin-hulled speedboat.

The Polish builder is one of several European builders (including Evo, Fjord, Wider and Wally) transforming the open day-boat category with creative designs. Beyond its hydrofoils, the 40 Open Sunreef Power ‘s cockpit has side “wings” along the aft gunwales that fold out at anchor, widening the beam from 17 feet to 22 feet 9 inches.

Lagoon 630 Motor Yacht

Lagoon 630 motoryacht

Fitted with the optional twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesels, the Lagoon 630 MY burns only 1.64 gph total at 6 knots, giving a theoretical range of 2,952 nautical miles with standard tankage of 793 gallons. Hull No. 1 had an optional 502-gallon tank, giving it transatlantic range.

Luxury, stability and economy are all hallmarks of Lagoon’s return to luxury motor yachts. If you can take a ride, it will be worth your time.

Fountaine Pajot MY 37

Fountaine Pajot MY 37

The Fountaine Pajot MY 37 easily accommodates the seafaring family with three- and four-stateroom options. In the three-cabin version, called Maestro, you’ll find an owner’s suite in the portside hull with a queen-size berth and en suite head. Two double-berth cabins and one more head are available for the kids. If your brood is bigger, the Quator setup features four double cabins with two heads.

The 37 is a traveler and can be powered with twin 150 hp or 220 hp Volvo Penta diesels. Top speed with the smaller engines is 17 knots, while it’s 20 knots with the bigger power plants. Interestingly, at 7 knots, the fuel consumption is the same, with either set of motors offering voyagers a 1 ,000-nm range.

Solarwave 64

Solarwave 64

Many yachts boast eco chops because they have a handful of solar panels that power the microwave or navigation lights. The Solarwave 64 , launched last summer, has the potential to run on sunshine alone. The vessel’s 42 solar panels generate 15 kW that are stored in batteries weighing about 1,300 pounds. They connect to electric motors.

Glider SS18

SS18, Glider Yachts

This British builder says it strives for design innovation and the Glider SS18 displays that DNA, the result of 8 years of research and development. She has a head-turning, catamaran hull form constructed from aluminum and composite materials. She is 60 feet LOA with a 17-foot beam, and has a relatively shallow 1-foot draft. Powered by quad Yamaha 300 hp outboards, she can reportedly reach 50 knots, and with her Stability Control System (SCS), should give a smooth ride while doing it.

ILIAD Powercats Built in China Enjoy Phenomenal Sales

Built in China and debuted by Multihull Solutions in Australia, ILIAD powercats from 50-90ft have attracted strong interest and sales.

Four ILIAD 50s have been ordered since the prototype was launched and evaluated last year. The first was sold during her official launch at Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show late May, and models will be shown in Phuket and Singapore.

The Iliad 50 was the first model from the new powercat brand built in China and unveiled in Australia

The Iliad 50 was the first model from the new powercat brand built in China and unveiled in Australia

The ILIAD 70 recently appeared at the Sydney International Boat Show in early August, a second is under way, and two bespoke and pre-bought ILIAD 60s are already on the slips. Buying now can still ensure a late 2020 delivery.

This remarkable reception is in part because ILIAD powercats are the product of decades of research. Mark Elkington, managing director of Multihull Solutions, has logged over 400 new-build multihull sales. Each one has provided an informal case study on what owners really want.

That information has been distilled into the ILIAD Project, which has assumed almost Utopian objectives. “Like the legendary Achaean ships of Homer’s epic poem, ILIAD power catamarans are designed
to ride out the most treacherous conditions with confidence,” he says, waxing a little lyrical.

Custom options allow clients to pick their own preferred layout . This is not a choice of two basic alternatives, as offered by some production yards. A whole spectrum of very different arrangements has been envisaged, and costed at efficient rates, including location of the master suite.

Other variables could include timber finishes, electronics packages, luxurious fabrics, and many types of engines, albeit always watching weight and power performances in the ILIAD hulls. Fully optioned, the ILIAD 50 sells for about US$1.5 million, the ILIAD 60 for US$2.5 million, and the ILIAD 70 for US$3.2 million. The ILIAD 90 is a “work in progress” and will be released in 2022.

Design of the Iliad 50 has evolved from the practical experiences of over 400 multihull owners

ILIAD’s chosen yard is already being expanded to handle an anticipated much-increased volume of orders, based on initial sales. Called Yuanhe Xinlong Shipyard, it is situated in Zhanjiang, a former French colonial port 50nm north of Hainan, which like Hong Kong was leased for 99 years from 1898, but returned to China after World War Two by President Charles de Gaulle.

Renowned Italian naval architect Riccardo Bulgarelli, who has lately established a full design office in China and is handling these ILIAD power catamarans, helped to introduce the yard. It also builds explorer Bering Yachts, and is familiar with Western quality and certification norms.

Elkington toured Zhuhai yards a few years ago, looking at Greek-Canadian owned Nisi Yachts, and noted that Australia’s McConaghy had already established a high-tech yard there, building among other vessels the advanced 43m composite trimaran superyacht Adastra for Anton Marden.

But he felt the work ethic and experience at Yuanhe Xinlong was more suitable for his project, and after due diligence, committed to constructing the ILIAD series at this site, not far from the Vietnam border.

The ILIAD builder per se is Australian-owned Global Marine, because Multihull Solutions is also Asia-Pacific’s leading dealer for Fountaine Pajot, Neel, Corsair Marine, and handles huge numbers of resales.

This steadily expanding agency has a powerful Australia-New Zealand-Pacific marketing crescent, and an Asian network in Phuket, based on Andrew de Bruin, Peter Cohen, and Kevin Quilty looking after charters, plus Fred Coetzee in Singapore.

The ILIAD 50 features a large lounge forward of the galley and indoor dining areas

Hong Kong and China owners, of whom there are rising numbers, deal mostly with Multihull Solution’s Southeast Asian headquarters in Thailand, and plans are afoot to expand branches into Hong Kong, Seoul-Pusan and Tokyo-Osaka.

“The DNA of the ILIAD,” Elkington told Yacht Style , “is firstly that it is a good, oceangoing passage-maker. People at boat shows often don’t realise, when they are buying, that some nice-looking models are going to get very wet when they venture offshore.

“Equally, consider what I call liveaboard lifestyles. New owners, after the adrenalin of a boat show, find later when they sit in their lounges that they can see the sky, but not the water around them. We have developed instead a high bridge deck with 360-degree views.

“Your power catamaran should be like a waterfront apartment, literally a home on the water. It must have all those comforts, from relaxation areas to storage to practical galleys to private bedrooms, enabling it to cruise in remote places self-sufficiently for long periods.

“Last but not least, it must have ‘beachability’ for emergencies or for urgent attention to underwater gear. Many power catamarans can’t do that because they have IPS, or no proper keel protection, and as soon as they touch bottom they are in trouble. ILIADs are built to be beached in an emergency and serviced on the spot. They don’t need some distant marina to look after their maintenance”.

The range of the ILIAD 50 is about 2,500nm

The range of the ILIAD 50 is about 2,500nm

Range of the ILIAD 50 is about 2,500nm, on the ILIAD 60 circa 3,500nm, and on the ILIAD 70 nearly 5,000nm. That is enough
to drive these craft across even the widest oceans, and it opens up undreamed-of possibilities for pleasure and exploring places well beyond routes of ubiquitous cruise liners. Fuel burn is less than 1.5 litres per nautical mile in long-range cruising mode.

“As sailing and now power catamarans have become incredibly more in-demand over the last decade,” says Elkington, “some sailing cat production builders have simply used the same hull for a power cat.

“This doesn’t work. A hull designed for gentle 7-8 knot sailing speeds is not necessarily suitable when pushed at 20 knots under engines. Power cats need to be designed specifically as power cats. This too is an aspect that the ILIAD series brings to the table”.

Elkington, who wrote a guest column for Yacht Style recently, remains a strong supporter of major French yard Fountaine Pajot, and has contributed many design ideas to the evolution of its Motor Yacht MY range, which has its own specific market niche, and he has a team dedicated to their sales and service.

Basically, the Fountaine Pajot Motor Yachts and the ILIAD range complement each other. The FP 37-44 feet MYs are great coastal and shorter-distance passage makers, and the 50-90ft ILIADs just take you further.

The ILIADs, though, are his latest power baby, and the youngster may be growing up a lot faster than expected.

Best power catamarans: 6 of the best models on the market right now

  • Top stories

Power catamarans have become so popular in recent years. Alex Smith talks us through 6 of the most exciting models we've covered in the past 12 months...

With the promise of extra volume stability and running efficiency it’s easy to see why power catamarans have become so popular in recent years.

Established players like Sunreef , Leopard and Lagoon have been joined by new builders like Vandal, Archipelago and Moon Yachts.

Big brands like Prestige have also made them move into twin hulled motorboats in recent years, and the likes of Bluegame and Wider Yachts look set to follow suit.

So with the trend showing no signs of slowing here’s our round-up of some of the most exciting new power catamarans you can buy right now.

Article continues below…

Prestige M48 sea trial review: The smartest multihull on the planet?

Moon power 60 review: is this £3.7m adventure cat the next big thing, 6 of the best power catamarans available right now.

prestige-m48-powercat-review-test-drive-video

Prestige M48

Prestige’s first ever power catamaran is designed to provide the volume of a 60 footer alongside the running efficiency of a 40 footer, but the way it manages all that onboard space is also quite attractive.

A three-part aft swim platform features a raising central section to help extend the cockpit party out over the water. The foredeck mimics that with freestanding furniture right at the forepeak and between them the saloon includes a big-aft galley, a large port lounge and a compact helm with a handy starboard side door.

From here private stairwells to the forward owner’s cabin and each of the two guest cabins provide plenty of privacy, and the split design of the port ensuite means it works really well as a day head.

In terms of styling the freestanding bow furniture looks a bit odd, and in terms of dynamics the stooping bridge deck does tend to touch down when the swells get beyond a couple of feet.

But if you want an accessible, novice-friendly boat that provides a party platform way out of proportion to its length, the first model in Prestige’s M line has a lot going for it. And if you have the budget, the more recent Prestige M8 is an even more convincing piece of work.

Moon Power 60

As a modified sailing cat, the Moon Power 60’s beam stands at a massive 53% of its overall length and that has a very clear impact on the inside.

In spite of huge side decks with dual access to the flybridge , the internal saloon occupies an enormous footprint. It’s used for a pair of peripheral seating areas plus a forward door to access a lovely sunken bow lounge.

Visibility from the lower helm is restricted by the big stuts that sit sailboat-style toward the centre of the screen, but performance is pretty impressive: a pair of 3,500L tanks give you a 2,000nm range at 8 knots with a fuel flow of just 3lpm, and if you really want to boost the range there’s plenty of space for extra fuel capacity too.

Up on the flybridge there’s a big symmetrical lounge and a hot tub flanked by sunbeds, and down below the two hulls borrow a bit of inboard space for four ensuite cabins.

The simplistic saloon arrangement, the absence of a day heads, and the sheer masculinity of that styling might prove a bit problematic for some, but if you’re okay with a modified sailing cat, and you’re happy to work with the yard to refine that deck layout, this big imposing long-distance boat is unlike anything else out there.

invincible-33-yacht-tour-video

Invincible 33

Invincible is a well-respected American Builder with a strong offshore sports fishing heritage and close links with the US Navy, but it also builds high-performance power catamarans, and this impressive 33-footer is the entry point to that fleet.

It uses quite a narrow beam with asymmetrical chines and spray rails, which enable it to heel into a turn in much the same fashion as a monohull and to ride the chop without spitting clouds of spray over that bow.

Capable of 56 knots with twin 400hp Verado outboards , it can also reportedly achieve cruising economy of just 2.5lpm for a range of around 500nm.

The internal arrangements are also really practical – with high capacity deck drains and an automatic fresh water flushing system for the outboards you can simply hose this boat down after a trip and get on with your day.

The fuss-free fit out includes multiple bait wells as well as lots of drained, insulated lockers that do a great job as ice chests and storage spaces, and the squared off bow provides lots of seating to supplement the big open deck of that half cockpit.

It might be built with fishing in mind, but as a rapid offshore performance machine, this might just be the perfect power catamaran for monohull lovers.

archipelago-47-catamaran-sea-trial-review-video-best-power-catamarans

Archipelago 47

The Archipelago 47 is a seriously good looking boat. Built from aluminum on the Isle of Wight with design input from commercial specialist Chartwell Marine, its low roofline, reverse screen, wide beams, slender forward hulls, and raised bridge deck give it a seriously potent profile, and that’s precisely what this boat is all about.

The idea is to deliver proper long distance offshore performance alongside a handy turn of pace in a homely fit out, and the Archipelago delivers that.

Built from 8mm hull plating with 6mm topsides, this Category A boat is rated to carry 12 people and sleep up to eight people in four cabins.

Reserving one entire hull for the owner’s suite is a really attractive option, but in all cases headroom is great and huge vertical picture windows provide amazing views from bed level.

The saloon features a large galley and lounge, as well as a raised helm with a shut-off partition for night nav. There are still some design tweaks required, particularly at the helm and the aft end, to maximise this boat’s potential, and if you want a flybridge you’ll need to look toward the Archipelago 52 instead, because on this particular boat that’s not an option.

But with space up top for all kinds of expedition friendly tenders, toys, cranes and solar panels, this tough go anywhere power catamaran has plenty going for it.

Watch our full sea trial review of the Archipelago 47

vandal-explorer-sea-trial-review-best-power-catamarans

Vandal Explorer

As a foil-assisted, outboard-powered, flybridge equipped, aluminium power catamaran, the Vandal Explorer is certainly not the mainstream choice, but of course it was never designed to be.

Created by Ben Mennem, who wants to enjoy the sun-drenched waters of the Med, in collaboration with Norwegian designer Espen Oeino, who loves outdoor adventures in the Nordic States, it seems to straddle both camps.

It uses a wide open main deck with skeletal bars rather than rigid bulkheads to keep you properly in touch with the sea. There’s also a big aft platform between the Verado XTO outboards, which operates as a passerelle, and thanks to a ladder and rain shower does a great job for watersports too.

Ahead of the cockpit lounge there’s a big transverse galley tucked inside the shelter of the pilothouse structure, and there’s also a raised full-beam bow cabin with a separate incinerator toilet.

It’s a bit noisy on that main deck when you’re underway and the limited two-berth arrangement of the base boat is likely to compel some people to question its overall practicality.

But as a tough and lightweight 40-knot boat with space for 14 people, a cool off-grid aesthetic and all the custom friendly flexibility you could want, its simplicity is actually a really key part of its appeal.

aquila-44-MBY278.newboat_9.AQ5-best-power-catamarans

The Aquila 44 is a proper wide-beam cruising cat

Built at Sino Eagle’s 1million sqft facility in China and developed in collaboration with the renowned J&J Design Group, Aquila is a specialist power catamaran builder and that absolutely shows.

Capable of up to 20 knots with the top rated Volvo Penta D4 420s, the Aquila 44 uses bow bulbs for extra waterline length, a softer ride and improved stability at displacement speeds.

But is the way it uses its 21ft beam that really impresses. In the aft cockpit a convivial c-shape dinette sits opposite a fold-out bar at the aft galley.

At the bow a set of steps connects the foredeck lounge directly to the flybridge, which is great for practicality as well as for large partie, and up top a central walkaround helm pod keeps things more sociable and inclusive than on any other boat in this class.

There’s a proper main deck helm too if you want it, plus sleeping for six in three private ensuite cabins, including a brilliant owner’s cabin that occupies the full beam beneath that foredeck.

If you need extra performance and style you could of course look toward the brand’s smaller, narrow-beamed, outboard-powered sport line, but for proper power catamaran lovers this big, cleverly arranged entertainment platform feels exactly right.

Global tech outage hits airlines, banks, health care and public transit

In the u.s., hundreds of flights were canceled friday morning and some public transit systems reported impacts..

A defective update from U.S. cybersecurity software company CrowdStrike crashed Microsoft Windows systems around the globe Friday . The tech outage disrupted operations across industries such as banks, hospitals and 911 call centers, plus grounded flights and hampered public transit systems and. Although a fix was deployed to restore most systems by the afternoon to return to normal, ripple effects may be felt throughout the weekend, experts warn.

CrowdStrike , which advertises being used by over half of Fortune 500 companies, said one of its recent content updates had a defect that impacted Microsoft's Windows Operating System, adding the incident was "not a security incident or cyberattack."

"Earlier today, a CrowdStrike update was responsible for bringing down a number of IT systems globally," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement on Friday afternoon. "We are actively supporting customers to assist in their recovery."

The company's CEO, George Kurtz, apologized for the disruptions in a post on X, noting the issue has been identified and isolated and a fix has been deployed. CrowdStrike is "working with all impacted customers to ensure that systems are back up and they can deliver the services their customers are counting on." Meanwhile, Microsoft said, "the underlying cause has been fixed" and impacted Microsoft 365 apps and services have been recovered, though the company continues to monitor the issue.

Kurtz went on to warn in his statement, "We know that adversaries and bad actors will try to exploit events like this. I encourage everyone to remain vigilant and ensure that you’re engaging with official CrowdStrike representatives."

In the U.S., thousands of flights were canceled Friday morning . American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines were among those who grounded flights less than an hour after Microsoft said it resolved a cloud-services-related outage that impacted several low-cost carriers.

“Every line is long,” said Chance Ortego, 31, whose flight to New York was canceled Friday morning.

Public transit systems in the U.S. also reported temporary impacts, but for the most part, trains and buses were running as scheduled. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in Washington, D.C., said its "website and some of our internal systems are currently down," but trip-planning applications were later restored. In New York City, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority also said some of its MTA customer information systems were temporarily offline until around 5:30 p.m.

Around the world, the outages disrupted London's Stock Exchange, caused major train delays in the U.K., sent British broadcaster Sky News off air, forced medical facilities in Europe and the U.S. to cancel some services and caused disruptions at airports in Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong and India.

Widespread economic impact from the outage is expected to be small, even though many companies were still trying to resume full operations by the time the stock market closed.

Travel disruptions: Over 2,000 US flights canceled amid global IT outage

Developments:

◾ More than 5,000 flights were canceled globally as of 3:30 p.m. Eastern, about 4.6% of all scheduled commercial flights for the day, according to aviation analytics company Cirium.

◾ Some U.S. border crossings saw impacts amid the outage: Traffic stalled on the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Detroit with Windsor, Ontario, Canada, as well as at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, the Detroit Free Press reported . CBP One, the Customs and Border Patrol app, and the agency’s border wait times website, each appeared to experience outages.

◾ U.S. stocks closed lower on Friday, in the wake of the outage. CrowdStrike shares closed down 11.1% at $304.96, with analysts predicting the outage would cost the company money to fix and restore trust with its customers. It was the lowest close for the shares since May 2. Microsoft shares fared better, closing down only 0.74% at $437.11.

◾ Krispy Kreme gave away free doughnuts  Friday due to the global tech outage.

◾ Some Starbucks locations were reportedly taking only cash Friday, and customers reported being unable to use the coffee chain's mobile app.

◾ Some had a sense of humor through it , with workers who had to muddle through expressing their wishes for a digital snow day from the office − "Knock Teams out" − as the outage didn't equate to a work stoppage for all.

◾ Dubai International Airport said on X it was operating normally following "a global system outage that affected the check-in process for some airlines." It added the affected airlines "promptly switched to an alternate system, allowing normal check-in operations to resume swiftly."

CrowdStrike impact: How a global IT outage unraveled the world's tech

How the CrowdStrike outage played out throughout the day:

Portland issues emergency declaration

Portland, Oregon, Mayor Ted Wheeler issued an emergency declaration Friday over the tech outage, with a statement noting the outages are affecting city servers, employee computers and emergency communications.

Meanwhile, the Maryland Department of Emergency Management increased its state activation level from "normal" to "partial," citing the tech outage. A post on X says a "partial" activation is for incidents that require "significant monitoring or resources," with additional emergency operations staffing from other agencies, functions and supporting organizations.

What is CrowdStrike?

CrowdStrike is a popular cybersecurity software company created in 2012 by CEO George Kurtz, along with Dmitri Alperovitch, and Gregg Marston.

According to its website, CrowdStrike has the "world's most advanced cloud-native platform that protects and enables the people, processes and technologies that drive modern enterprise."

Alperovitch, CrowdStrike's former Chief Technology Officer, is a member of the Biden administration's Homeland Security Advisory Council , which is meant to provide advice and expertise to support decision-making "across the spectrum of homeland security operations."

- Gabe Hauari , Bailey Schulz

What caused the CrowdStrike outage?

According to an alert sent by CrowdStrike to its clients and reviewed by Reuters, the company's "Falcon Sensor" software caused Microsoft Windows to crash and display a blue screen, known informally as the "Blue Screen of Death."

Kurtz said "there was an issue with a Falcon content update for Windows Hosts" but customers “remain fully protected,” according to a post on X . He also reiterated that Friday's outage "was not a security or cyber incident."

Anne Neuberger, deputy national security advisor for cyber and emerging technology, said she spoke to Kurtz Friday and confirmed the incident did not appear to be related to a cyber attack.

“At this point, we believe that it is an IT-related patch, an issue with that patch,” she said while speaking at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado. "I think they're determining what went wrong there."

‘I’m just hoping to make it onto a flight’

Chance Ortego had reached the finish line of a nearly two-week work trip when he saw the news all air travelers dread: his flight was delayed.

Ortego was in the AirTrain en route to his flight from San Francisco International Airport when he heard other travelers discussing the outage. After checking the status of his 7:05 a.m. Delta Air Lines flight to New York – which was pushed back nearly three hours – he rebooked another flight at 9:15 a.m.

He later learned his original flight had been canceled. Ortego was among the thousands of passengers around the world facing delays, cancellations and problems checking in as airports and airlines were caught up in a massive IT outage that grounded U.S. flights early Friday.

“I was already planning to sleep,” said Ortego, who works in health care. “Now I'm just hoping to make it onto a flight.”

Inside the airport, there was more chaos than a typical travel day as airlines recovered from the outage. Many screens were blank except for an error message and airport personnel made announcements directing questions about flights to airlines.

All U.S. airlines issued travel waivers for those affected to easily rebook their plans. Those who opted to cancel can rest easy knowing the Department of Transportation classified the cancellations and delays as controllable, thus airlines are responsible for upholding the commitments they've made to customers when it comes to policies like rebooking or hotel and meal vouchers as the mess gets sorted out.

Impact on the economy

The outage isn’t expected to have any effect on the broader economy unless it persists for days.

“At this point, the IT outage is more a nuisance than an economic event,” says Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics. “If it drags on into early next week, the economic damage will begin to mount.”

If the outage is limited to a day or two, canceled flights can be rebooked and banking transactions can be completed later.

“There is plenty of time for activity to be recovered over the remainder of the month,” says Jonathan Miller, senior U.S. economist at Barclays.

Outage impacts US public transit websites, ticketing

Major cities were generally able to keep trains and busses running, but tech issues have been causing problems with ticketing and other tech systems, leading to delays in some cases.

The Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area Transit Authority reported website and other tech issues, but said trains and buses were running as scheduled.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York City reported problems with "customer information systems" but said it's buses and trains were unaffected. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said it was not affected but urged riders who might be using public transit to any area airports to check with their airlines before traveling for updates.

New Jersey Transit said some of its ticketing machines may have been impacted but its buses and trains were, for the most part, running on time. Some trains were out of operation Friday due to repairs that had to be made because of the intense heat that blanketed the region all week.

The Chicago Tribune reported Friday morning that commuter rail lines were affected, though it noted traffic is typically lighter on Fridays than other days. Delays on some lines were as long as 45 minutes, the Tribune reported. Chicago Transit bus and rail service was not affected but some CTA customers were unable to add value to their payment cards via the app or machines overnight, but the issue has been resolved.

Some transit systems, including Metro Transit in Minneapolis and Cincinnati Metro reported temporary disruptions to websites, trip planners, social media and other applications but no impact to its bus or trains.

Despite summer break, schools disrupted by IT issues

The CrowdStrike outage crashed some computers at colleges Friday and hampered a popular software for enrolling students in K-12 schools for the fall.

The University of Rochester, a private school in New York, told students to keep rebooting their systems until the problem was fixed. The University of Alabama’s technology office said its campus computers using Microsoft Windows crashed. Rutgers University and the University of Kentucky also reported disruptions.

Despite the summer break, K-12 schools in Maryland and Kansas said they were having problems with PowerSchool, a widely used software for grading and student enrollment. An update posted to the company’s webpage Friday morning said the outage was impacting all its major products, including its enrollment feature.

911 call centers disrupted

State and local law enforcement agencies across the country reported disruptions to 911 services after the outage hit.

National reports of 911 outages peaked at more than 100 on Friday just before 3 a.m. according to Downdetector .

Agencies in at least seven states reported temporary outages, including the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and Faribault Police Department in Minnesota, 911 systems New Hampshire , Fulton County, Indiana , and Middletown, Ohio .

Non-emergency and 911 calls to multiple dispatch centers in Alaska "were not able to be answered" for around seven hours overnight, Austin McDaniel, communications director for the Alaska Department of Public Safety, told USA TODAY in an email.

"Dispatch centers switched to analog phone systems or to partner dispatch centers that were not impacted to continue taking calls," he wrote. Systems in the state were back up as of 4:23 a.m. local time.

The Phoenix Police Department was also impacted ‒ 911 call centers could take calls, but had to dispatch officers manually, the Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported .

The Federal Communications Commission said in an email to USA TODAY that it was aware of reports of disruptions to 911.

"We’re closely working with other federal agencies to provide assistance and determine the extent of these service disruptions.”

Biden briefed on global outage as federal agencies assess impacts

President Joe Biden has been briefed on the CrowdStrike outage and his team is in touch with the cybersecurity firm, as well as with impacted companies and agencies, according to the White House. Biden will receive "sector-by-sector updates throughout the day and is standing by to provide assistance as needed," the White House added.

Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement it is working to "fully assess and address system outages."

DHS added it's working alongside the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency as well as CrowdStrike, Microsoft and federal, state, local and critical infrastructure partners to get a grasp on the incident and its impacts.

Over 2K US flights canceled amid outage

Several U.S. carriers, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, issued ground stops for all their flights early on Friday due to communication problems, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA said operations were no longer impacted as of 10:53 a.m. ET, but it continues to monitor the situation and warned the global IT issue could continue to affect flights this weekend.

There were more than 2,500 U.S. flights canceled and more than 7,900 delays as of 3:25 p.m. EDT, according to flight-tracking website  FlightAware .

Most airlines were able to resume operations as the morning progressed, but many said they expected disruptions to continue throughout the day.

Hospitals cancel nonemergency services

Hospitals across the U.S. and overseas were impacted by the outage, which forced some to cancel elective surgeries and halt visitations as well as outpatient services.

Mass General Brigham in Boston canceled previously scheduled nonurgent surgeries, procedures and medical visits, according to a statement sent to USA TODAY. In the same area, Tufts Medical Center told media outlet WHDH it’s still assessing the outage’s effect on clinical and surgical operations.

In Texas, Ben Taub Hospital and Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital suspended "hospital visitation and patient information," citing a "Microsoft Windows failure," according to a statement from Harris Health System . Cincinnati Children's Hospital said many of its Microsoft-based computer systems are down because of the outage, which forced the hospital to cancel early morning appointments.

"We are in touch with the hospital field and the federal government and monitoring the situation closely to better understand its scope and impact," said John Riggi, the American Hospital Association's national adviser for cybersecurity and risk.

Two hospitals in northern German cities canceled elective operations scheduled for Friday but continued to provide patient care and emergency services.

Outages exposes fragility of internet infrastructure

While there were reports of companies gradually restoring their services, analysts weighed the potential of what one called the biggest-ever outage in the industry and the broader economy.

"This is a very, very uncomfortable illustration of the fragility of the world’s core Internet infrastructure," Ciaran Martin, Professor at Oxford University's Blavatnik School of Government and former head of the U.K. National Cyber Security Centre, told Reuters.

"IT security tools are all designed to ensure that companies can continue to operate in the worst-case scenario of a data breach, so to be the root cause of a global IT outage is an unmitigated disaster," said Ajay Unni, CEO of StickmanCyber, one of Australia's largest cybersecurity services companies.

Outages ripple far and wide

From the United Kingdom to Singapore, the effects of tech outages were far-reaching on Friday.

British broadcaster Sky News went off-air and train companies in the U.K. reported long delays. Departure boards at several U.K. airports appeared to freeze, according to passengers who posted reports on social media.

London's Stock Exchange reported experiencing disruptions. Some hospitals also reported difficulties processing appointments and several chain retail stores said they couldn't take payments. The soccer club Manchester United said on X that it had to postpone a scheduled release of tickets.

In Australia, media, banks and telecoms companies suffered outages.

There was no information to suggest the outage was a cybersecurity incident, the office of Australia's National Cyber Security Coordinator Michelle McGuinness said in a post on X.

New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority said some of its systems were offline due to a worldwide technical outage, but have since been restored. It said MTA train and bus services were unaffected.

Spanish authorities reported a "computer incident" at all its airports.

Berlin's main airport said check-ins were delayed because of a "technical fault."

Ryanair, Europe’s largest airline by passenger numbers, warned passengers of potential disruptions which it said would affect "all airlines operating across the Network." It did not specify the nature of the disruptions.

There were reports a shipping terminal in Gdansk on Poland's Baltic coast was not operating normally.

NetBlocks, a digital-connectivity watchdog, said that the outage reported by global airlines, corporates and infrastructure services firms and others was having "minimal" impact on global Internet connectivity.

What Is Project 2025, and Why Is Trump Disavowing It?

The Biden campaign has attacked Donald J. Trump’s ties to the conservative policy plan that would amass power in the executive branch, though it is not his official platform.

By Simon J. Levien

Donald J. Trump has gone to great lengths to distance himself from Project 2025, a set of conservative policy proposals for a future Republican administration that has outraged Democrats. He has claimed he knows nothing about it or the people involved in creating it.

Mr. Trump himself was not behind the project. But some of his allies were.

The document, its origins and the interplay between it and the Trump campaign have made for one of the most hotly debated questions of the 2024 race.

Here is what to know about Project 2025, and who is behind it.

What is Project 2025?

Project 2025 was spearheaded by the Heritage Foundation and like-minded conservative groups before Mr. Trump officially entered the 2024 race. The Heritage Foundation is a think tank that has shaped the personnel and policies of Republican administrations since the Reagan presidency.

The project was intended as a buffet of options for the Trump administration or any other Republican presidency. It’s the latest installment in the Heritage Foundation’s Mandate for Leadership series, which has compiled conservative policy proposals every few years since 1981. But no previous study has been as sweeping in its recommendations — or as widely discussed.

Kevin Roberts, the head of the Heritage Foundation, which began putting together the latest document in 2022, said he thought the American government would embrace a more conservative era, one that he hoped Republicans would usher in.

“We are in the process of the second American Revolution,” Mr. Roberts said on Real America’s Voice, a right-wing cable channel, in early July, adding pointedly that the revolt “will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.”

A representative for Project 2025 said it did not speak for any candidate, adding that “it is ultimately up to that president, who we believe will be President Trump, to decide which recommendations to implement.”

What does Project 2025 propose?

Much of the plan’s nearly 900 pages detail extreme executive-branch overhauls. Among many recommendations, Project 2025 lays out plans for criminalizing pornography, disbanding the Commerce and Education departments, rejecting the idea of abortion as health care and shredding climate protections.

It calls out the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which includes the National Weather Service, as “one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry.” And it backs deploying the military “to assist in arrest operations” along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Beyond the policy proposals, something else comes up over and over again in the document — Mr. Trump and the Trump administration, which are mentioned hundreds of times.

What are Trump’s ties to Project 2025?

Project 2025 is led by the Heritage Foundation. It does not directly come from Mr. Trump. But that’s only part of the story.

Portions of the plan were driven by people who were top advisers to Mr. Trump during his first term and would most likely serve in prominent roles if he wins in November.

Russell T. Vought, Mr. Trump’s former budget director, led a section of Project 2025 that dealt with executive orders. Mr. Vought is the policy director for the Republican National Convention, and the national party is controlled by Trump allies. The party on Monday adopted a new policy platform that reflect priorities laid out on the Trump campaign website. Another person involved in Project 2025 is John McEntee, a former White House personnel chief who began Mr. Trump’s systematic attempt to sweep out officials deemed to be disloyal in 2020.

Mr. Trump has recently gone to great lengths to distance himself from the project, even falsely claiming that he knows nothing about it or people involved in it.

Mr. Trump wrote in a post on his social media site on Friday that he knew nothing about Project 2025 but also that he disagreed with parts of it: “Some of the things they’re saying are absolutely ridiculous and abysmal.” He did not specify which items he was talking about.

What are Trump’s plans for a second term?

The former president has been historically disengaged, even hostile, toward any type of transition planning for a possible second term.

But he has made no secret about his plans to gut civil-service protections, conduct the largest mass deportation effort in history, impose sweeping tariffs and target his enemies using presidential powers. His allies have developed a legal rationale to erase the Justice Department’s independence from the president, and several of his closest advisers are now vetting lawyers seen as more likely to embrace aggressive legal theories about the scope of his power .

Some of this, though not all of it, can be found in the Trump campaign’s own policy platform called Agenda47 . It is more sparse than Project 2025. And even though Agenda47 is his campaign’s official list of policy priorities, Mr. Trump himself rarely mentions Agenda47 by name on the campaign trail.

Mr. Trump won in 2016 in part by saying any number of things, some of them contradictory, about policy, letting different people hear what they wanted in his words. In keeping with that approach, the Republican Party platform released Monday presents a less-specific agenda he directly approved that he can point to. The platform reflects a softening on abortion — the issue he views as his biggest vulnerability after the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

How do the Trump campaign plans and Project 2025 differ, and overlap?

There are a few ways the two plans differ.

One is on abortion. Project 2025 takes an aggressive approach to curtailing abortion rights, stating that the federal Health and Human Services Department “should return to being known as the Department of Life” (it was never known by that name) and that the next conservative president “has a moral responsibility to lead the nation in restoring a culture of life in America again.” Agenda47, however, does not mention abortion once.

Mr. Trump’s public position on abortion has regularly shifted. When he ran in 2016, he pledged to install justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade. He called the ruling that overturned it “a great thing” at the presidential debate this year. He also said at the debate that abortion rights should be decided on a state-by-state basis.

Despite the differences, there are numerous similarities. One overlap: eroding the independence of the Justice Department. Mr. Trump has frequently criticized the legitimacy of the department’s investigation into attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Project 2025 argues that the department suffers from bureaucratic bloat and must be reined in, teeming with employees committed to a “radical liberal agenda.” On immigration, Mr. Trump has made no secret of his plans to hold the largest mass deportation effort in history. Project 2025, likewise, suggested the removal of any and all “immigration violators.”

The campaign and Project 2025 also share equal demands to end diversity, equity and inclusion programs and the “toxic normalization of transgenderism” as Project 2025 calls it. In many rallies, Mr. Trump asserts he will “keep men out of women’s sports.”

On international policy, Mr. Trump and Project 2025 both emphasize a protectionist outlook, often called “America First” policies by the Trump campaign. Sections in Project 2025 and in Agenda47 both suggest higher tariffs on competitors, and increasing competition with China.

One of Project 2025’s proposals to turn more federal jobs over to appointees loyal to the president mirrors a Trump-era policy. The back story: During Mr. Trump’s presidency, he issued an executive order making it easier to fire career officials and replace them with loyalists. Mr. Biden rescinded the order, known as Schedule F , but Mr. Trump has said he would reissue it if he wins a second term. Project 2025 also calls for Schedule F to be reinstated.

What are Democrats saying about Project 2025?

President Biden’s campaign and his supporters have yoked Project 2025 around Mr. Trump’s neck, repeatedly warning that it is his shadow platform and that it is evidence of an extreme second-term agenda. They have called it an authoritarian blueprint in an onslaught of news releases, social media posts and TV appearances.

In a rarity for an in-the-weeds policy memo, Project 2025 has made its way into the wider public, drawing condemnations on late-night shows, podcasts and awards programs. Since February, @BidenHQ , the campaign’s social media account, has posted about Project 2025 hundreds of times, associating it with Mr. Trump. The effort has received more engagement than most of the account’s posts, according to a Biden campaign official.

“Project 2025 should scare every single American,” Mr. Biden said in a statement. “It would give Trump limitless power over our daily lives.”

Late last month, John Oliver, the host of “Last Week Tonight,” dedicated a nearly 30-minute segment to criticizing Project 2025 and dissecting its dangers; it received over seven million views on YouTube. Taraji P. Henson, the actress and Biden campaign surrogate, encouraged people to vote against Republicans in a speech at the BET Awards by focusing on Project 2025.

Elected Democrats, particularly those on the left, have used the project to highlight the dangers of a second Trump term. Liberal members of Congress like Ayanna S. Pressley of Massachusetts have taken to news programs and congressional hearings to highlight what they say is Mr. Trump’s unspoken platform.

At a June 11 hearing , Ms. Pressley called Project 2025 “a far-right manifesto” that would “destroy the federal government as we know it.”

What are Trump’s aides and other Republicans saying about Project 2025?

Last year, after Project 2025 gained traction in the media and the Biden campaign incorporated it as a core part of its messaging, top Trump campaign officials issued a statement.

Mr. Trump’s top aides, Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita, said in a December statement that unless indicated by campaign staff or the former president directly, “no aspect of future presidential staffing or policy announcements should be deemed official.”

Ms. Wiles and Mr. LaCivita have been continually frustrated with press coverage of Project 2025. They see much of it as potentially damaging in a general election. They are especially anxious about anything to do with restrictions on abortion, a sign that Mr. Trump is trying to appear more moderate on the issue as his focus shifts from the G.O.P. primary concerns of his base to the broader electorate in November.

Following the overturning of Roe, a decision put in place by conservative justices he appointed, Mr. Trump has grown ever more convinced that hard-line abortion restrictions are electoral poison. The new official Republican Party platform, which Mr. Trump directly approved, significantly waters down the abortion section compared with the 2016 and 2020 G.O.P. platform.

Beyond the abortion issue, many conservatives do not contest the radical nature of Project 2025, and they embrace the publicity.

Steve Bannon, a close Trump ally, told ABC News in late June, before he reported to federal prison to begin a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress, that Project 2025 would “take apart the administrative state brick by brick” as he brandished a copy of the report.

US Submarines in RIMPAC is A Critical Warning to China; India's P-8I Joins RIMPAC in Hawaii

I n recent times, there have been significant developments in military activities involving China. Chinese warships made a notable visit to Alaska, signalling a bold projection of power. Additionally, China has commenced joint military drills with Russia, further showcasing its growing military alliances. Amidst these events, the Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC) 2024 is underway in the Indo-Pacific, emphasizing the crucial role of submarines in future conflicts, particularly with China. Submarines, with their stealth and power, are essential for maintaining security and stability in the region.

Submarines: Stealth and Power Under the Sea

Submarines are unique military vessels because they can travel underwater undetected. This ability to move silently beneath the waves makes them extremely difficult to find and track. This stealth is a crucial advantage in any military conflict, allowing submarines to gather intelligence, avoid detection, and strike enemy targets unexpectedly.

The U.S. Navy operates the largest and most advanced submarine fleet in the world. With over 70 nuclear-powered submarines, the fleet includes both attack submarines and ballistic missile submarines. Attack submarines are designed to hunt and destroy enemy ships and submarines. They are also capable of launching special operations forces for covert missions. Ballistic missile submarines, on the other hand, carry nuclear missiles, providing a powerful deterrent against any potential adversary.

During RIMPAC 2024, the importance of submarines is emphasized by top naval officials. They highlight the need to have more submarines ready for action, whether they are new or undergoing maintenance. This focus ensures that the U.S. Navy remains prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to any threats in the Indo-Pacific region.

India Joins RIMPAC

The Indian Navy’s P-8I aircraft has joined RIMPAC 2024, the world’s largest international maritime exercise hosted by the US Pacific Fleet in Hawaii. With 29 participating countries, including India, RIMPAC aims to enhance multilateral relations and operational readiness across the Indo-Pacific. One key focus of this exercise is the importance of submarines in future conflicts, especially with China. Submarines are stealthy, powerful, and play a vital role in maintaining security and stability in the region.

Submarines as a Deterrent

Submarines play a crucial role in deterring potential adversaries, including China. The mere presence of these stealthy vessels in the region acts as a powerful warning. Potential enemies know that submarines can strike at any time from unseen locations, making it risky to engage in aggressive actions.

In response to increasing Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific, the U.S. and its allies are showcasing their united strength through exercises like RIMPAC. This show of force serves as a reminder that the U.S. is committed to defending the region and maintaining peace and stability. The U.S. Navy’s submarine fleet, with its advanced capabilities, is a key component of this deterrence strategy.

US-China War: Looming Threat Over Philippines Strategic Role in Spratly Islands

Partnerships and Interoperability

RIMPAC is not just about demonstrating military might; it’s also about building partnerships and improving interoperability among allied forces. Interoperability means that different countries’ militaries can work together seamlessly. This is crucial in any future conflicts, particularly with a powerful adversary like China.

Dozens of countries participate in RIMPAC, bringing their own warships, aircraft, and troops. They train together, learning to operate as a cohesive unit. This joint training ensures that allied forces can respond quickly and effectively to any threat, leveraging each other’s strengths and capabilities.

Philippines May Acquire First Attack Submarine; Amid Rising Tensions with China

Top naval officials emphasize the importance of these partnerships during the exercise. They highlight that working together on areas of mutual concern helps maintain freedom of the seas and upholds the rules-based international order. This order has supported peace, stability, and prosperity for many years, and maintaining it is a shared goal among the participating nations.

The U.S. Navy’s Commitment

The U.S. Navy is deeply committed to maintaining a strong presence in the Indo-Pacific. Despite other global challenges, such as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the U.S. remains focused on the Indo-Pacific as a key area of operations. This commitment is evident in the scale and scope of RIMPAC, the largest international maritime exercise in the world.

India to Conduct Malabar Exercise with QUAD to Confront China’s Aggression

The training during RIMPAC covers a wide range of mission sets. These include carrier operations, anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, air combat, amphibious operations, maritime security operations, and disaster relief. This comprehensive training ensures that participating forces are prepared for any scenario, making them more effective in maintaining regional security.

Squad Shield: US Prefers Philippines over India Amid Rising South China Sea Tensions

Submarines are a critical component of future conflicts, particularly with China. Their stealth, power, and versatility make them invaluable assets in maintaining security and stability in the Indo-Pacific. Exercises like RIMPAC highlight the importance of submarines and the commitment of the U.S. and its allies to defending the region. By showcasing their combat capabilities and building strong partnerships, these nations send a clear message of deterrence to any potential adversaries.

In recent times, there have been significant developments in military activities involving China. Chinese warships made a notable visit to Alaska, signalling a bold projection of power. Additionally, China has commenced joint military drills with Russia, further showcasing its growing military alliances. Amidst these events, the Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC) 2024 is underway in […]

China Installs Giant Wind Turbine Built to Harness Power of Hurricanes

This wind turbine can generate electricity even during a storm., winds of change.

Imagine a wind turbine so well designed that it can withstand not just hurricanes and typhoons but even harness the massive power of these unpredictable storms to generate electricity.

China has apparently done just that with the installation of OceanX, the "world's largest single-capacity floating wind turbine platform," according to a LinkedIn post by the manufacturer Mingyang Smart Energy.

This massive wind power apparatus, located in the southern city of Guangzhou, is actually made up of two turbine rotors connected to a V-shaped stem — with the capability of generating 54 million kWh per year, roughly translating to powering 30,000 homes, according to Mingyang.

It's built on a "ultra-high performance concrete" floating pad meant for off shore wind capture, and has blades with a staggering diameter of 597 feet, according to Mingyang's website .

What's truly astonishing about the system is that due to its design it can stand up to winds as fierce as 161 mph, according to Mingyang . The innovative turbine can also harness storms by "turning into the wind" to generate power.

China's world-leading OceanX wind power platform closer to installation

Older wind turbines shut down when the wind speed is excessive, so if the OceanX proves its mettle in face of lashing storms, it'll signal an important development for wind power.

Besides China, other countries are also developing specially designed wind turbines, such as GE's massive Haliade-X offshore wind turbine in the Netherlands which is purportedly certified to withstand typhoons .

In Colorado, engineers were inspired by palm trees to design a wind turbine whose blades are flexible, making them resilient to extreme high wind situations.

Needless to say, all these innovations are going to be needed as the planet warms up and hurricanes and typhoons become stronger and more destructive .
