Sabre’s 66 Dirigo is a Downeast Classic

  • By Chris Caswell
  • Updated: October 16, 2018

sabre 66 dirigo

Before you step aboard Sabre ‘s 66 Dirigo Flybridge, throw away the standard methods of judging a yacht. Hold off on the tour through the staterooms, poking around the galley and sitting in the helm seat.

First, step into the salon and run your fingers lightly over the fluted pillars, with American cherry joinery. Go to the galley, where every locker, drawer front and the fridge has raised panels, a hallmark of fine cabinetry. Each drawer is handcrafted maple with dovetail joints that should hold together for decades, even without glue. Every stateroom door is arched and hearkens back to Horatio Hornblower days. Sure, square doors would have been faster and cheaper to build. And the yard could have used inexpensive, preformed drawers. But that isn’t the Sabre Yachts way. The company motto is “Crafted in the Maine Tradition.”

Every Dirigo (Latin for “I lead” and the motto of Maine) is a semicustom creation. She comes from the boards of in-house designer Kevin Burns (see sidebar) and is available as a Salon Express or as the Flybridge version we tested. This new Sabre flagship is 14 feet longer than the now-retired Sabre 54, and the added length makes her even more graceful, carrying the flybridge without adding bulk.

Most builders would convert that extra length into additional staterooms, but Sabre gave more generous amounts of space to the existing three staterooms and salon. The master spans the yacht’s 18-foot beam and includes a walk-in closet, a 6-foot sofa, and a shower stall that’s more than 4 feet wide.

The yacht’s salon is also an airy retreat, with 6-foot-2-inch headroom and six opening windows for panoramic views from the 10-foot couch and loose chairs. Double-wide sliding doors open to the cockpit, where there is another high-low dining table and settee, and a clever touch is the glass-enclosed stairway to the bridge — so the salon view isn’t blocked. Just inside the sliders are a wet bar and fridge.

The helm is an open pilothouse, raised slightly to provide the skipper with wraparound visibility. An L-shaped settee for companions is to port of the helm console, which has room for four displays. The skipper has a joystick control in the armrest of the Stidd helm seat.

As you step down to the galley, admire the complicated handrail, supported by fluted newel posts, that wraps nonstop from the helm, past the galley and down to the master stateroom. The galley runs fore and aft to starboard, with a Wolf four-burner cooktop, Sub-Zero fridge with freezer drawers, and granite countertops.

sabre 66 dirigo

Opposite the galley is the VIP stateroom with an athwartships queen berth, an en suite head and shower, and sliding shoji screens over the ports for privacy. Forward, the third stateroom has a double berth that splits electrically into twin berths as needed. This stateroom has access to the day-head, as well as a private shower compartment to port.

Noteworthy details include the pump room under the galley sole that has step-in access to systems and plumbing. Redundancy is a byword for the Sabre 66, because you don’t want the air conditioning or fresh water to go out on a cruise, so there are backups installed, and the audiovisual cabinet in the companionway has electronics on sliding racks for easy service.

The flybridge is traditional with the helm console forward, an L-shaped settee wrapping around an electric high-low dining table, and a console with a grill, sink and two-drawer fridge. With a fiberglass hardtop, the bridge can be enclosed for all-weather use.

Power for this yacht is twin 900 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200 drives with D13 diesels. A cockpit hatch leads to the full-headroom engine room with space on all sides of the engines. A pair of Onan Quiet series generators provide 21.5 kW on the primary and 13.4 kW on the secondary unit. Switching between AC shore and generator power is automatic, and a Mastervolt 3.4 kW high-output inverter/charger backs up the stand-alone 100-amp charger.

sabre 66 dirigo

The Sabre 66 Dirigo is surprisingly quick, considering the 40-ish tons of fine woodwork and amenities. Our test boat had a 24.6-knot cruise speed while her engines burned 63 gph. The skipper of our test vessel says he averaged 24 knots from Maine to Florida at 65 gph.

A wealth of thoughtful touches, fine craftsmanship and classic styling should make the Sabre 66 Dirigo timeless.

Looking for something smaller? Sabre’s other flybridge models include a 42- and 48-footer. The builder’s Salon Express series has 38-, 42-, 45- and 48-footers.

The 66 has a 975-gallon fuel capacity: twin 225-gallon day tanks to port and starboard, and a 525-gallon main tank on centerline. There are also dual transfer pumps.

Sabre Designer Kevin Burns

After serving in the U.S. Coast Guard and Merchant Marine, Kevin Burns studied yacht design and worked with mentors before joining Sabre Yachts. There, he finds the family atmosphere productive. He can hear the sounds of the shop floor through his wall and smell the resins. “If I draw something up, I can bring it downstairs, and my guys can tell me if it’s going to work,” he says. “If not, back to the table.”

He sees good design as lasting. “I want a design that’s going to be just as appealing 10 years from now as it is today, without ever becoming old-fashioned,” he says. “Design must advance technology, and technology must advance design. But it has to be a boat first.”

Living with HAL

Nicknamed HAL after the talking computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey , a digital-switching network from Mastervolt CZone and Maretron is aboard the Sabre Yachts 66 Dirigo. It is displayed on the yacht’s Garmin screens and a pair of Apple iPad Minis that recharge on LaunchPort bases in the salon and master stateroom.

Nearly all of the vessel’s AC and DC systems are monitored and controlled through this setup, which has programmable modes for day cruising, night running and “dock unattended,” which not only sets the lighting and water pumps, but also monitors shore power to start the yacht’s generator should dockside power fail.

At the touch of a button, the skipper can also transfer fuel among the 66 Dirigo’s three tanks, check on the bilge-pump status, adjust the air conditioning and open the sliding doors. HAL’s comment in the movie sums up the magic of the onboard digital switching system: “I am putting myself to the fullest possible use.”

MANUFACTURERS DESCRIPTION

As an early adopter of pod drive systems, Sabre Yachts has a clear understanding of how these revolutionary drives can best be used to increase efficiency, maximize ease of operation and owner confidence. The all-new Sabre 48 Salon Express is our fifth pod driven model and she takes full advantage of this technology in both her performance and in her interior accommodation plan.

The 48’s traditional exterior profile belies the contemporary performances of her vee-hull. She cruises at 27 knots and at wide open throttle she’ll attain more than 32 knots. With the Zeus pod drive system, turns at speed are as exciting as they are in a fine sports car but perhaps even more exhilarating is the quiet that one experiences at cruise speeds. Less than 75 Dba makes her one of the quietest motoryachts available today. The joystick and Skyhook operations give every Captain the confidence to dock her in the most difficult of circumstances.

Her raised cockpit sole brings together the social aspects of the cockpit and main salon and the aft end of the house opens up fully to connect the spaces. Her main salon offers ample seating surfaces for entertaining or simply relaxing to read or enjoy the standard entertainment systems. While underway the raised settee to port of the Stidd helm chair is a perfect place for the crew to enjoy the ride. And when docking, a standard side deck door serves her helmsman and crew, well. The two cabin, two head layout is supplemented by a mechanical space forward of the engine room. Optionally, this space can be laid out as a crew quarters with berth and head unit.

Manufacturer Provided Description

At Sabre Yachts our goal has always been to fulfill the dreams and wishes of our boat owners by listening carefully to their requests and blending their ideas into exciting designs. We consider our owners and potential owners to be valued members of the Sabre Design Team. The Sabre 42 is the result of our observation that our clients want to enjoy the same levels of personal luxury and comfort that they have come to expect in their homes and in their automobiles. To that end we have developed a style of sedan, available with or without fly bridge, that permits boaters to operate from the comfort of the yacht's interior or from the openness of an optional fly bridge. Technology is advancing rapidly and our owners have come to expect that if there is a new technology available, we will employ it in our designs. We have dramatically changed the way we build our yachts and the way in which they are propelled. Traditional values such as fine craftsmanship and great looks remain, as our owners have come to expect, but below the surface things are state-of-the-art.In our fiberglass shop we have changed infusion molding. It is greener in the sense that it uses considerably less resin and cleaner in that the emissions levels are much lower. It's lighter because we use less resin and that allows the hull to run faster and use less fuel. Infusion differs from traditional hand lay-up in that all materials are loaded dry into the mold in a stack, the stack is then covered with a plastic bag and resin is infused into the stack. This creates a stronger part with higher glass to resin ratios. With Zeus Pod everything has changed and nothing remains the same. The smaller engines using vectored thrust propel the boat at higher speeds using less fuel. And when maneuvering in tight spaces a joy stick makes child's play of docking.

Legends & Myth: The History Of Champagne Sabering

Legends & Myth: The History Of Champagne Sabering

words: Josh Malin

The first time you see someone sabre a bottle of Champagne a series of thoughts run through your mind:

  • Why is that person waving a knife…or perhaps a sword?
  • What’s that in their other hand? A bottle of Champagne! Where is this going…
  • Oh god. I’m about to get sprayed by Champagne at best, glass at worst?
  • That was cool.
  • What ‘genius’ decided that hacking the neck off a glass bottle of expensive highly pressurized liquid was a good idea?

So who was the ‘genius’ to first sabre a bottle of Champagne? You may have heard it was Napoléon Bonaparte who first put sword to bottle, back in the days following the French Revolution. Or perhaps it was the officers in his cavalry – celebrating some great victory by bashing open a bottle of bubbly atop a horse. Maybe you heard the alternate version of that story, that following a defeat in battle, a bitter solider cleaved the head off a Champagne bottle to drink away his misery. After all, it was Napoléon who (supposedly) said:

“Champagne! In victory one deserves it; in defeat one needs it.”

A more romantic twist involves those same officers and Madame Clicquot, the young widow who had inherited her husband’s Champagne house when she was twenty-seven.

Napoléon visiting the cellars Moët & Chandon

Are any of the stories you might have heard true? Perhaps none of them are. Perhaps they all are – in other words, no one person invented sabering. If that’s the case then you can embrace the origin myth that you like. Champagne is steeped in traditions and myths that contribute to the undeniably celebratory mood that popping a bottle of bubbly inspires. Just because Dom Pérignon didn’t actually ‘invent’ Champagne, by accident no less, doesn’t make the story any less magical, especially his quote:

“Come quickly, I am drinking the stars.”

When a new ship is launched, we christen it by smashing a bottle of Champagne on its hull. We do this for good luck. Why? Because there’s something in the bubbles that is truly magical, something does inspire us to celebrate. On that note let’s explore the wonderful legends of Champagne Sabering.

The Hussars of The Napoleonic Wars

The Napoleonic Wars followed the French Revolution of 1789. Napoléon Bonaparte took power in France, a decade later. Within a few years he was fighting all across the European continent. The Hussars, light cavalry mounted on fast horses, were a symbol of the early, seeming invincibility of Napoléon’s armies. These lavishly dressed young soldiers slung Pelisses – short fur-trimmed jackets – over their shoulders. They armed themselves with carbines, and more famously, brass hilted sabers.

The Hussars

As these young soldiers rode home after a string of early victories, the legend goes that the townspeople would toss them bottles of Champagne. Still atop their horses, the hussars would have had difficulty opening the foil-wrapped cages and pulling out the corks. The solution? A swift stroke of the sabre blade to the neck of the bottle. Combine the mass conscription of the French populace (particularly young men) with the feverish dreams of empire that Napoléon’s early victories inspired and the image of the dashing young Hussar slicing open a Champagne bottle astride his horse comes into focus.

Of course Napoléon’s early victories gave way to an eventual defeat. While his armies lost their last battle at Waterloo in June of 1815, his doomed march into Russia three years earlier is equally infamous. Perhaps it was somewhere in the frozen ruins outside of Moscow that the alternative version of this story was born. With hundreds of thousands of their fellow soldiers dead or captured, this would certainly have been the sort of defeat where a man “needed” Champagne. And, courtesy of another legend, Champagne was available, despite the scorched earth tactics of the Russian army:

(Charles-Henri Heidsieck) famously rode on a white stallion in 1811, just ahead of Napoleon’s advancing army, all the way to Russia as a publicity stunt. Master promoter, he arrived in Moscow with cases of Champagne and his order book.

The Widow Clicquot

Madame Clicquot

François Clicquot’s family was involved in a number of businesses, including the production of Champagne. When he died six years later, Madame Clicquot, now Veuve or ‘widow’ Clicquot took control of the company. After some wrangling with her father-in-law, she secured a fresh investment that allowed her to focus solely on Champagne production. This decision proved to be an excellent one, as she turned out to be a skilled winemaker, though it took a number of years before she achieved true success. Under her guidance, the company developed the process of riddling, which is why the Champagne you drink today is crystal clear.

Her husband died in 1805, in the early years of the Napoleonic Wars. When Napoléon’s soldiers came through Reims, in Champagne, they found a wealthy young widow who was running her own Champagne business. The story goes that she would entertain Napoléon’s officers in her vineyard, handing out bottles of Champagne to the men as they mounted their horses and left for battle. The officers, hoping to catch the eye of the wealthy young widow, unsheathed their sabres, and still astride their horses, lopped the tops off the bottles.

An illustration of the facilitates at Veuve Clicquot drawn in 1879

The story is quite romantic – though we tend to believe that the shrewd Madame Clicquot was entertaining the soldiers purely out of self-interest. That is, if she was entertaining them at all. Madame Clicquot’s first renowned vintage was in 1811, toward the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Whatever the case, the widow seemingly was not impressed by these antics as we know her, and her famous Champagne house as Veuve Clicquot for she never remarried. She did however, survive the wars and go on to build a global Champagne empire.

Heavily armed security boats patrol winding Milwaukee River during GOP convention

MILWAUKEE – Instead of kayakers and tour boats, the summertime scene on the Milwaukee River has taken on a solemn tone this week during the Republican National Convention : Around-the-clock patrol boats, some with heavily armed officers.

Security planners have had to contend with the winding waterways through Milwaukee near the Fiserv Center RNC convention site, along with securing downtown streets. Roughly half a dozen police departments, along with state and federal agencies, have boats patrolling the river 24-hours-a-day until the convention ends this week.

“They’re committed to working those long shifts, throughout the days and nights,” U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Joe Neff said. “They’ve been all on board for making sure public safety is priority.”

Associated Press journalists were allowed on board a 29-foot U.S. Coast Guard boat Wednesday to observe. The boat, typically used for search-and-rescue operations, traveled near the secure zone of the convention site via Lake Michigan and the river that empties into it.

A large section of the river has been shut down to commercial and recreational traffic this week, with very few exceptions, like residents who live on the river. Within an hour, the Coast Guard boat had passed vessels from Milwaukee police, state conservation wardens and a heavily armed specialty Coast Guard tactical force in camouflage gear.

The patrols are part of a massive security plan that Milwaukee police, the U.S. Secret Service and others have been detailing for more than a year. Security around former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, has been especially tight in the wake of last weekend's apparent assassination attempt.

“There is no higher level of security that can be invested in events such as this,” Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman told the AP on Wednesday.

So far, no major incidents have been reported on the water during the convention, according to the Coast Guard.

Patrol boats typically depart from a Coast Guard facility south of downtown on Lake Michigan, before turning into the mouth of the channel where the river begins. Speeds are then slowed to 5 mph and boats pass by the restaurants and converted warehouses of Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward on the way to the secure zone.

The boats are tasked with monitoring Milwaukee's downtown bridges and keeping unauthorized people and vessels out of the secure zone.

They are also on the lookout for anything suspicious.

As the Coast Guard vessel traveled near the downtown security zone, the crew spotted something mysterious floating in the water. They turned the boat around and fished it out, discovering the object was only a red and gray nylon tarp that had been rolled up and posed no threat.

Coast Guard officials said the help from other agencies this week also means they can keep up their usual public safety duties.

“Yes, we’ve got the national security event here, the RNC. That doesn’t mean we’re ignoring the rest of our normal mission — search and rescue,” said Coast Guard Lt. Phillip Gurtler. “We still have the coverage that we need.”

The story has been updated to correct the name of the Milwaukee police chief to Jeffrey Norman, instead of Norman Jeffery.

Mel B wearing a leopard print graduation gown

Mel B sure knows how to spice up a graduation outfit.

The singer, whose full name is Melanie Brown, received an honorary doctorate degree from Leeds Beckett University over the weekend, recognizing her work with domestic abuse victims.

For the ceremony, the 49-year-old paid tribute to her Spice Girls roots, channeling her signature Scary Spice style with a custom-made graduation gown that featured a leopard-print lining.

The dress that Brown sported underneath her robe was equally eye-catching, as she opted for a sparkly, long-sleeved design with a cutout in the middle.

Of course, it’s not the first time Brown has openly channeled her on-stage outfits.

She pulled a similar fashion move earlier this year while promoting her book, “Brutally Honest,” rocking multiple leopard-print pieces .

Brown touched on her achievement in a speech, saying it was as major as performing with the girl group .

“In my life I have been to many, many places and done many extraordinary things, but being here today as a graduate of Leeds Beckett University is honestly as massive an achievement as performing at Wembley Stadium with the Spice Girls,” she admitted.

She added that the experience was “life-changing,” especially since she “didn’t just want to accept an award” but rather, actually became a student.

“Not only have I been awarded this degree, but I was also accepted as a student on the Trauma Informed Care course which has been a huge step for me in so many ways.”

Posting to Instagram later on, Brown celebrated alongside her three children — Phoenix Chi, 25, Angel Iris, 17, and Madison, 12 — and fiancé, Rory McPhee, sharing a similar sentiment in the caption.

“This is my mission, this is all about one thing being a survivor – helping survivors, breaking the silence and using my voice to help others,” she wrote.

After divorcing her ex-husband, Stephan Belafonte, in 2017, Brown accused the director-producer of sexually exploiting her .

Belafonte denied the claims and  filed a $5 million defamation lawsuit  against the “Spice World” star in May 2024.
