Comic and Young Turks Host Aida Rodriguez: “Go Read a Book!”

Vic Shuttee February 21, 2023 6:35AM

Aida Rodriguez is not afraid to mix things up in person or online

Aida Rodriguez’s new tour is called Don’t @ Me – and anyone intending to come at her better bring back up. The whip smart wit has a new special streaming on HBO Max and is doing a special one-night event at Houston Improv on March 2.

“That’s the reason I named the tour The Don’t @ Me Tour , because I actually de-activated my twitter account when The Woman King came out,” the comedian shares on the initial idea behind the name. “I remember distinctly, because there was this horrible tweet about Viola Davis and I thought: this really effects my psyche to constantly watch the dismantling and dehumanization of women. It came at a time when a lot of things were happening. So I was never really on Twitter during the Elon Musk takeover and the abundance of the use of racial slurs, because I could see it coming.”

“I was like, I need to get off of here because I am losing brain cells as we speak. So Don’t @ Me was how I was feeling, and I think everyone feels that because many people with social media feel like they can say whatever they want to say. That their opinion overrides yours, that if you don’t think like them there is something wrong with you. You know, we’re all imperfect. Yeah, systems exist and people are bigots and racists and homophobes and transphobes and misogynists and so on and so forth. All of us have been something at some point, and that’s not to normalize or excuse systemic ills and racism. But the reality is we love to virtue signal and point fingers at others and then we check out this person’s Twitter and see them back in the day and see their problematic tweets. What does this become: a constant take down? I don’t want to participate in that. If you don’t like what I have to say, then don’t follow me. Don’t chastise me, don’t criticize me, I don’t want any part of it.”

While her first HBO Max special Fighting Words just hit the digital airwaves, Rodriguez already has a very fresh act to present to audiences making the long journey from their homes to see her in person. “It’s about 80 percent new material” she estimates. “That’s the great thing about having a lot of time, which we had during the pandemic, we had a lot of opportunity to write. And you know, we had a lot of material. So I took a lot of observations and this one is a lot more fun for me. I’m really getting into a lot of social commentary and observation, but even deep into my family experiences. As you evolve and grow and look backwards, you start to observe things differently.”

As clear from her onstage style, those who are followers of her online commentary will recognize not only her humor on display, but also a willingness to take life’s bumps in the road with humility and occasionally profound insight. “I will say I became very introspective during the pandemic,” she says in a somber tone. “We were faced with our mortality, and I was really reminded of how vulnerable we are. We take that for granted when we are living and we are thriving and things are happening in our favor. It was really life changing for me and gave me a lot more insight on people and how information is not just delivered, but digested. I do think it will forever impact who I am, not just a comedian but as a human being.”

Fighting Words was not only special for offering her premiere platform to share her thoughts, but the special also offered her something once-in-a-lifetime: the chance to return to the Dominican Republic to meet her birth father. In documentary style footage inter-spliced with her on-stage act, Rodriguez puts herself out there in a very vulnerable way to capture this moment.

“I’m very private, and as much as I share about my personal life, it is all very curated and approved by my family members. There’s nothing I go out and talk about without making sure the people I’m talking about are OK with it. But this was something I needed to do, and I decided to do it publicly. I kind of jumped out there and I was freaking out when it was about to happen. But I just knew I would be coasting through it because it was such an emotional moment for me. I was pretty numb. I didn’t know what to expect or how it would happen. I wanted to have the opportunity to see it afterwards so I could be outside of it and just be able to look at it, watch it, feel it, process it. I also wanted to share it so I could help normalize it for people like me who felt a certain way growing up their entire life because they had a missing parent. I wanted them to see that there was an upside to it, that I’m doing OK and that you can be OK too. It was an act of bravery for me.”

While the title is still pending, Rodriguez teases that she will be cover the occasion in more detail in a forthcoming book. “I am happy with the result,” she says. “I would say writing has always been an extension of me - an opportunity for me to express myself, especially when I was younger and I felt silenced. Being able to get the word out was a way for me to express myself and you know, it is cathartic. And we get so caught up with destinations that we forget the journey and how these journeys can impact the future. So for me this was such a great lesson in life about not feeling solutions in life lies with one person, one thing, one experience.  They are all connected to the greater journey and you evolving into your best self.”

While this journey to visit a past has long been building, most know Rodriguez is best off-the-cuff, as she is often seen commenting on current events as a co-host on the popular online news outlet, The Young Turks . With Tucker Carlson releasing a special on The Death of Comedy and the rumor that the new honchos at CNN may be looking to bring a comedian in to anchor their primetime broadcasts, the media landscaping appears to be adapting fast. As a comedian and a commentator, what does she make of this recent pivot toward comedy intermingling with news?

“Writing is the foundation of all the things that I do,” she begins, “not just as a comedian but as a voice in the political-social sector, which I do very lightly.  I don’t call myself a pundit or a correspondent but I am a host on The Young Turks . But I will say, comedians are among the smartest people on the planet. The ones who take their jobs seriously really take the time to connect with all people, not just the ones who think like them.”

“If you think about when we were just dealing with the Supreme Court and women’s reproductive rights, you saw so many videos of George Carlin going viral that were shot years ago.  That’s because his perspective, his point of view, his sense of information was so on point that people who were 19 years old were sharing his videos and probably didn’t know who he was. "It’s smart to have a comedian on board when talking through issues that polarize us because through laughter, it disarms us as we process information. Sometimes through a joke, you are able to reach people you wouldn’t if it seems like you are talking down to them or preaching at them. Laughter is just inviting. It’s disarming, with the right comedian, armed with the information. You can’t just show up there and throw out jokes. You better know what you are talking about. I think it’s an idea if you have a comedian, especially if it's someone who has taken on a neutral role as opposed to some comedian who are now pledging their allegiance to political parties and ideologies. I think it’s our job to break all of that down and explore it.”

Rodriguez has some advice for whoever takes on the job as comedy anchor. It's the same as for those who spend too much time on social media: “Go read a book!” she says with a big laugh. “You have to read. Especially right now, I think it’s very important to do that because the media has taken on this role of reality television verses being a resource for the American people.”

Aida Rodriguez’s performance is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 2 at Improv Comedy Club Houston, 7620 Katy Freeway, Suite 455. For more information, call 713-333-8800 or visit improvhouston.com . $40-180

Aida Rodriguez Wants You to Laugh at the Pain

The Dominican American comic hopes to broaden the way Latinos are represented in comedy. She’s finally getting her chance.

AUSTIN, Texas — “I didn’t know I was half Dominican until I got older,” the comedian Aida Rodriguez said from the stage at the Stateside Theater. “They broke it to me like it was bad news.”

The crowd laughed, but Ms. Rodriguez was serious. This is a subject close to her heart. The range of Latino identities in America often falls under the broad category of “Hispanic,” a box to check on a census chart that blurs the richness of the many cultures it encompasses. In a country where a handful of famous Latino comics come mostly from the Southwest, Ms. Rodriguez wants to bring a Caribbean perspective to the forefront.

When she was 3 years old, her mother left her father and moved them to Miami from Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital. She grew up with her Puerto Rican side of the family, thinking she was only Puerto Rican. It wasn’t until this year, when she met her father for the first time since then, that she reconnected with Dominican culture.

She now uses comedy to process the parts of her life over which she didn’t have any control.

“It’s hard to see things that are a part of you that you don’t remember that well,” said Ms. Rodriguez, from the greenroom before her set at the Moontower Comedy Festival on Sept. 22. Earlier this year, she filmed a one-hour comedy special, which premieres on HBO Max on Nov. 4. In the show, she uses material that touches on her upbringing and her hardships. She looks at it all unflinchingly. In fact, she even had cameras rolling when she met her father, capturing parts of their reunion to weave into the hourlong video.

The pieces are starting to fall into place for Ms. Rodriguez’s comedy career, but when she first started she was a single mother of two, and stand-up was more of an outlet than a path she thought she would take.

“I couldn’t afford a therapist,” she said.

In 1998, she left her husband, a former football player for the Chargers, and moved from San Diego back to Miami. “I went home for two years to recover,” Ms. Rodriguez said. “I didn’t fit into that world.”

At the same time, she was working on a script that she submitted to the Sundance Screenwriters Lab, a workshop where new screenwriters are paired with seasoned writers who help them finish their manuscripts. When she was named a finalist for the program, she saw it as an affirmative sign to pursue her acting career, so, in 2000, she moved to Los Angeles. She took a job at a financial firm in between acting jobs and was signed by a talent agency.

“I was signed pretty quickly,” she said. “It was part of the illusion that I was going to make it.”

The trickle of acting jobs she had been booking soon dried up. In 2007, she started appearing on “Speedy’s Comedy Corner,” a radio show on Jamie Foxx’s Sirius XM radio channel, The Foxxhole. The staff of the show put together a comedy show at the Orpheum Theater in Phoenix and invited Ms. Rodriguez to be part of the lineup.

It was her first time onstage, and she was a hit. The audience roared throughout her five-minute set. She was hooked on that feeling, but it would be a long time before she’d be able recapture it. Back in Los Angeles, she managed to get a three-minute “First Impressions” spot on a “Chocolate Sundaes” show at the Laugh Factory.

“I bombed,” Ms. Rodriguez said. “I did well for the first few minutes, but then I got cocky.”

She then booked another five-minute set, this time on “Comic View: One Mic Stand,” a BET show hosted by Kevin Hart. But she wasn’t ready. “Five minutes when you’re bombing, feels like three hours,” Ms. Rodriguez said. “I realized it was too early for me and I needed to focus on the craft.”

She began showing up for open mic nights at the Westwood Brewing Company in Los Angeles. Soon after, she started hosting a weekly comedy show at the Hollywood Studio Bar and Grill. After two years there, she picked up another hosting gig at a comedy club in San Diego for three years.

In 2010, she was opening for Paul Mooney at the Punchline, a comedy club in Sacramento. By 2013, she was no longer opening at the Punchline; she was now the headliner.

Her big break came in 2014, when she auditioned for Season 8 of “Last Comic Standing,” a reality competition show on NBC whose executive producers included Wanda Sykes. Other comedians warned Ms. Rodriguez about the snare of reality shows, but she felt it was her best shot at success.

“It was a reality show, but as a Latina it was the only chance I had,” Ms. Rodriguez, 44, said. “I had to be very careful that I didn’t perpetuate stereotypes. It was heavy.”

Ms. Sykes advised her to let go of her inhibitions. “It just takes a while to feel comfortable with who you are,” Ms. Sykes said in an interview. “I think the journey is difficult, but once you get there and you can do it, it is so liberating and cathartic and just raw and beautiful.”

Although Ms. Rodriguez didn’t win the competition, she said it helped her find her voice, and she began booking mainstream comedy clubs across the country. She performed at colleges, went on a 10-day military tour in Korea, and landed a role in “The Comedian,” a 2016 film about an aging comic starring Robert De Niro.

Everything seemed to be falling in place, but Ms. Rodriguez still felt like an impostor, she said. She often felt like she was cheating, like she could be found out at any moment.

“I just thought, I keep getting away with it,” Ms. Rodriguez said. Still feeling like she had something to prove — at least to herself — she went to New York.

As the saying goes, “You go on the road to get good, you go to New York to get great, then you go to L.A. to get famous,” she said. The New York comedy scene helped her feel validated. Ms. Rodriguez is now a regular at the Comedy Cellar. “I go every month to do stand-up because that’s where you get the respect,” she said.

Her satire is awash with the themes of race, religion, millennial wokeness and motherhood.

“People were throwing up Black Lives Matter signs during the marches,” she says during her special. “And they only put those signs up so nobody will break their windows.”

Onstage, Ms. Rodriguez finally gets to enjoy the spotlight and she wants to use it to inform and use humor to bring her identity to light, she said. “I want to create more space for other people.” As she puts it in her special: “We have this ethnic spectrum that contains all the races — we have white, Black, Asian, Indigenous, we have everybody.”

With her newfound fame came a broader reach and higher expectations. In 2018, she was criticized for suggesting that Louis C.K., who had been accused of sexual misconduct by five women , use his routine to educate other men.

“If he uses the opportunity to address his shortcomings, maybe he can change a few minds among his fans and maybe he can save a couple of girls from unnecessary and unwanted incidents,” Ms. Rodriguez told The Hollywood Reporter .

“They called me a rape apologist,” Ms. Rodriguez said, while in the greenroom of the Stateside Theater in Austin, minutes away from performing her first hour of stand-up since the start of the pandemic. “Because I said when he comes back, he should use his privilege and his platform to speak to the people who think like him because I can never reach those people.”

In 2019, Ms. Rodriguez was one of six comedians chosen by Tiffany Haddish to be part of her Netflix anthology series, “Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready.” Every episode is a 30-minute special from a different comedian. Once again, Ms. Rodriguez made headlines. This time, for jokes that were considered homophobic.

“If you want to have a conversation with me and say, This is problematic? Let’s talk about it,” Ms. Rodriguez said. “You want to blast me on social media and try to take me down knowing that I’m at the bottom? I get paid the least out of everybody in comedy. Latinas are getting paid less than everybody, comedy is not exempt from it.”

Now, Ms. Rodriguez mentors other Latina comedians, in hope that they can avoid becoming caught in industry traps.

“She probably is looking out for me in ways that I don’t even know,” said Glory Mora, 31, a comedian in New York who produced a show Ms. Rodriguez headlined, called “Morir Soñando,” after a popular Dominican drink. “When she did our show, she gave us props and she didn’t even have to do that.”

Ms. Rodriguez is also starring in and writing a half-hour comedy show based on her life, which is in development at HBO Max . Ms. Haddish has signed on as an executive producer. “I just want to show my people in an honest light,” Ms. Rodriguez said. “I want to be true to us.”

It was call time and she headed to the stage. In a camo jacket, gray jeans and a bright pair Jordans designed by the rapper J. Balvin, she got to the microphone and opened up with a Karen joke .

Several people got up and exited the theater.

“That’s OK,” she reassured the rest of her audience. “Paul Mooney told me that if 10 people don’t leave while you’re onstage, you’re doing it wrong.”

An earlier version of this article misstated Glory Mora's age. She is 31, not 33.

Aida Rodriguez is a comedian, actor and writer. Lauded by Esquire Magazine as “raucously funny,” she has become a favorite with fans and critics alike. With her first hour standup special now streaming and her own TV series in development, both at HBOMax, Aida is bound for the comedy stratosphere. In November 2021, Aida’s first hour standup special Fighting Words premiered on HBOMax. In the special, the comedian takes to the stage to address today’s audiences about cancel-culture and the social issues of the day, not just because they’re ripped from the headlines, but because they are in the pages torn out of her personal life. Additionally, Rodriguez is developing her own half hour comedy series with HBOMax based on her own incredible life story, which includes surviving two kidnappings, sexual abuse, and a period of homelessness. Co-written and ExecutiveProduced by Rodriguez, Chris Case (Showtime’s Flatbush Misdemeanors) and Nastaran Dibai (Netflix’s Dear White People), the project examines the struggle of a comedian (Rodriguez) who is trying to kick start a career while raising two very different teenagers on her own over multiple time zones. It is an uplifting story of survival and triumph in the face of a darkly funny Miami inner-city upbringing, where she learnedskills that allowed her to thrive and endure.

Comedian Aida Rodriguez on how growing up in Miami shapes her act

aida rodriguez tour

The comedian Aida Rodriguez can find the punchline in the painful.

She does it on stage with biting insight into her life and the world.

Aida was raised in Miami. She was brought up by a Puerto Rican abuela who figures prominently into her act. She jokes about the mom who dated an actual killer. And don’t get her started about her Cuban stepdad. Actually, go ahead and get her started on that one.

Somehow, she turns this all into comedy.

She has particular insight into what it means to grow up in South Florida — down to the horrible drivers.

Aida’s big break was on the TV show Last Comic Standing . Her friend on the comedy circuit Tiffany Haddish put her into the Netflix show, They Ready . She’s been on Showtime and has a one-hour special on HBO.

Aida’s in Miami for one night, playing the Miami Improv on Wednesday.

On the June 12 episode of Sundial, Rodriguez joined us to talk about finding comedy in things that make us cringe.

On Sundial's previous episode, two Silver Knight winners from Miami-Dade and Broward County: Brooke Simmons and Stephanie Balderas, respectively, joined us to talk about their projects.

Listen to Sundial  Monday through Thursday on WLRN, 91.3 FM, live at 1 p.m., rebroadcast at 8 p.m. Missed a show? Find every episode of Sundial on your favorite podcast app, such as  Apple Podcasts , Stitcher  and  Spotify .

Capital Laughs Headshot

Capital Laughs Presents The Comedy Shuffle

Unlike every other comedy show you've ever been to, The Comedy Shuffle will always keep you laughing. Unlike every other comedy show you've ever been to, The Comedy Shuffle never has bad jokes. "That's impossible." NAY! At The Comedy Shuffle, a comic (any comic) does jokes while a seasoned comic (also lit and w/ a mic) interrupts them. If their joke doesn't initially work, the Shuffler's burns do. The Shuffler can end their set at any time (if it's not going well), or let the comic go a little longer to find some brand new material (in a supportive, but accountable atmosphere). It's not mean. It's not. Okay. It's a little mean. But, it's fun and constructive too.

Stand-Up Comedy Wrestling Headshot

Stand-up Comedy and Wrestling

Standup Comedy Wrestling is a comedy competition where WWE meets dark humor. There'll be roasts, dirty jokes, and an expensive grand prize for the funniest comedian of the night. The comics come from all over the world and the winner will be judged by a secret committee and the audience's reaction.   Doing the announcing is Angel Penn, one of the most talented, good looking, and disrespectful comedians you'll ever meet. Your other announcer is some nerd not worth further acknowledgement, Michael something or other.

At SCW the competition is real, the grand prize is real, and we only keep it real… real mean.

Alycia Cooper Headshot

Alycia Cooper

Quickly on her way to the top of the comedy food chain, mainstream comedienne, Alycia Cooper, is a force to be reckoned with. Her “take no prisoners” stand up is a mix between Chris Rock, George Carlin, and Margaret Cho (three of her idols). Alycia’s favorite topic is politics, but she has no problem sprinkling in observational humor and family stories, to round out the routine. Her brand of universal humor coupled with a razor sharp wit, keeps Alycia in the top of requested comics at comedy clubs and colleges all across the country.

In 2000, Alycia made her national television debut performing stand up in a segment called “The Flavor of the Future” on BET’s “Oh Drama.” After this, the television shows and DVD performances kept coming. Alycia has been featured on, “Comicview,” “Last Comic Standing,” “Byron Allen’s Comics Unleashed,” “America’s Got Talent,” ”The Mo’Nique Show,” “Wanda Does It,” “Gossip Queens,” “Nick’s Mom’s Night Out,” “The Bob and Tom Show,” “Stand Up in Stilettos,” “Stand Up & Deliver,” “The Ricki Lake Show,” “Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell,” and is now a regular panelist on “Bethenny,” on Fox. She taped her first DVD in 2002 for a Christian Comedy Show called, The Spirit of Comedy.” She then produced two DVD’s: “Paper Chasin’,” and “Stimulus Package,” and recently released her first comedy CD: “Alycia: Unchained” to rave reviews. She is currently taping her third hour at this time.

Alycia has been the opening act for such household names as: Dick Gregory, Paul Mooney, Whitney Cummings, Felipe Esparza, Bob Marley, and Tony Rock, to name a few. She is so universal that one night Alycia killed it at an all Latino show, then rocked an all white, Ivy League audience in Princeton, NJ, and finished in South Philly at The Laugh House to a standing ovation. How many acts can say this: NONE. “Don’t put Alycia in a box!”

More than a comedienne, Alycia has been acting since the age of 5. She began performing theatre at Howard University and continued throughout college at The University of Maryland at College Park. After becoming a comic, Hollywood called with acting roles in “The Parker’s,” “Grounded for Life,” “Party Psychic,” and “Raising Hope.” She also starred in the short film, “Knocked Down.” Alycia is also a writer/director/producer, having began her career as a television producer of some of Hollywood’s biggest shows. She has punched up comedies for film and television shows, and has ghost-written for some of the biggest names in the business. She has also written for “The Steve Harvey Morning Show”, and was the first female audience “warm-up” person for several shows including “The Parker’s,” “Girlfriends,” “Wanda at Large,” “The Tyra Banks Show,” and most recently, ‘The Talk,” on CBS.

The biggest benefit of being a comic, to Alycia, is being able to perform overseas for our men and women in uniform. She has been to Japan, Korea, Guam, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Djibouti Africa. While there, she had the opportunity to entertain and meet some of the courageous Americans in the world.

In May of 2004, Alycia was featured in Essence Magazine as “One to Watch.” Today, she is still being watched by legions of fans in the United States and abroad. She has just begun to scratch the surface of where she’s going. So, hold on and take this ride with a future legend.

Ladies & Gentleman! Gary Meikle is back yet again with another self-written, self-deprecating show to leave you all short of breath again. Last year “Papa” as he is becoming more commonly known as, because the 1st ever comedian worldwide without an agent (his choice) to be granted a full working visa for the USA and is keen to keep on showing why. Gary’s tour this year promises to deliver, he will reluctantly share his newer role in life being a kept man, by the lady that kept him of course being his ever-growing smarter granddaughter, Gracie. Who intelligently but more essentially rips the piss out of her Papa daily. A few stories to note are when she blatantly points out that he’s got “moobs”. She also embarrasses him by telling the truth about his tattoos to a stranger that he is trying to impress. She explains in detail how her Papa isn’t THAT famous and how she calls him a bad name without meaning it. There are literally to many Gracie and Papa stories to cover but as usual Gary will go of on tangents and delve into the workings of his on mind. He will tackle subjects such as: rejection issues of men and women, what it was like being a 14-year-old hormonal boy, how it is ok for men to be overtly feminine now, cold showers, mosquitoes on holiday and much more. If you can guarantee one thing from Gary it is that he will work, his 5’8 ass off to make sure everyone that sees him live wants to come back for more. Your laughter makes up for the rejection he suffered in his earlier years, and he will thank you all individually if you choose to come along to his meet and greet, pre-show that he will be doing at every single show again.

On the latest episode of theGrio ‘s Acting Up podcast, comedian and actress Aida Rodriguez opened up to Cortney Wills about her new special Fighting Words , colorism in the entertainment industry, and more.

Fans may remember Rodriguez from her appearance on Last Comic Standing back in 2014. Since then, she’s gone on to produce, act and write on various projects. Fighting Words , now streaming on HBO Max, is de scribed a s a “hilarious, no-holds-barred exploration of identity and family,” in which she dives deep into her Puerto Rican and Dominican heritage.

HBO Max Premiere Screening Of Aida Rodriguez "Fighting Words"

Speaking to how Fighting Words came to be, Rodriguez explained, “I got this special before COVID. I had gotten my deal with HBO Max in 2019 and then COVID hit. But you know, when it’s like for us, this collective trauma that we experienced and specifically people of color, Black people in this country, we were dealing with COVID. We were dealing with George Floyd, Breonna Taylor . The list goes on.”

So how did Rodriguez use her platform to “show up” in this moment?

“All of these things were happening at one time and watching our communities being ravaged by this pandemic, this virus, in the worst way…and me figuring out how I can show up in the world as a stand-up comedian in this moment and try to offer some healing and use what I have to try to sort some of this stuff out.”

Rodriguez shared that the special was “cathartic” for her as she was told time and again in her career that this would “never happen” for her.

“I get my first comedy special. People told me that would never happen because of my gender, my or my ethnicity and my age, and I get it,” she said. “And then coronavirus hit and we all sat down and the future looks so bleak. I [didn’t] know when this is going to happen. And so I just made a decision to start writing and documenting what was happening in the moment.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Stephanie Beatriz and Diane Guerrero on Afro-Latino representation in Disney’s ‘Encanto’

Rodriguez also opened up about her Afro-Latino heritage and colorism.

“I claim my Afro-indigenous roots because I feel like history, society, America has embedded this shame and embarrassment over where we come from by making Africa…our African ancestors…caricatures with this idea that it’s uncivilized and underdeveloped and indigenous people as being dumb and weak,” she said. “And those are our glorious ancestors, right? I claim them proudly because, I am because they were. I want to reframe that.”

Norilsk: The city built by gulag prisoners where Russia guards its Arctic secrets

Environmental activists are frustrated by how authorities handled a diesel spill which poured into two Arctic rivers in late May.

Arctic suffers worst ever industrial spill

The drive from Norilsk airport to the city takes you past mile after mile of crumbling, Soviet-era factories.

It looks like an endless, rusting scrapyard - a jumble of pipes, industrial junk and frost-bitten brickwork. If you were looking for an industrial apocalypse film setting, this would be your place - but you're unlikely to get the permissions.

Norilsk was built in Stalin's times by gulag prisoners. This gritty industrial city is a testament to their endurance both of the cruelty of Stalin's regime and of the harsh polar climate. There were no thoughts then on how to build to protect the environment, just to survive it.

Vasily Ryabinin doesn't think much has changed, at least in ecological terms. He used to work for the local branch of the federal environmental watchdog, Rosprirodnadzor, but quit in June after exposing what he says was a failure to investigate properly the environmental impact of the gigantic diesel spill which poured into two Arctic rivers in late May.

At 21,000 tonnes, it was the largest industrial spill in the polar Arctic .

Despite the Kremlin declaring a federal emergency and sending a host of different agencies to participate in the clean-up, just last week Mr Ryabinin and activists from Greenpeace Russia found another area where technical water used in industrial processes was being pumped directly into the tundra from a nearby tailing pond. Russia's investigative committee has promised to investigate.

"The ecological situation here is so bad," Mr Ryabinin says.

"The latest constructions such as the tailing pond at the Talnack ore-processing plant were built exclusively by Nornickel chief executive Vladimir Potanin's team and supposedly in accordance with ecological standards, but on satellite images you can see that all the lakes in the vicinity have unnatural colours and obviously something has got into them."

Mining company Nornickel would disagree. It has admitted flagrant violations at the tailing pond and suspended staff it deems responsible at both the Talnack plant and at Norilsk Heat and Power plant no 3 where the diesel spill originated from.

On Thursday it appointed Andrey Bougrov, from its senior management board, to the newly-created role of senior vice president for environmental protection. It has a clear environmental strategy, provides regular updates on the status of the spill, and its Twitter feed is filled with climate-related alerts.

But what investors read is very different to the picture on the ground.

21,000 tonnes of diesel oil has spilled into two rivers in Norilsk

Norilsk used to be a closed city - one of dozens across the Soviet Union shut off to protect industrial secrets. Foreigners need special permissions approved by the Federal Security Service (FSB) to enter the region. It would take an invitation from Nornickel to make that happen and, for the past month since the spill, that has not been forthcoming.

Unlike in Soviet times, Russian citizens are now free to come and go. That's why our Sky News Moscow team were able to fly in and travel around the city, even if getting to the spill site was blocked. What they were able to film provides a snapshot of the immense challenge Russia faces in upgrading its Soviet-era industrial infrastructure, particularly at a time when climate change is melting the permafrost on which much of it was built.

Just downwind from one of the rusting factories on the city outskirts is a huge expanse of dead land. The skeletal remains of trees stand forlorn against the howling Arctic winds. Sulphur dioxide poisoning has snuffed the life out of all that lived here. Norilsk is the world's worst emitter of sulphur dioxide by a substantial margin.

"For 80km south of here everything is dead," Mr Ryabinin says, "and for at least 10km in that direction too. Everything here depends on the wind."

Immediately after the spill, Mr Ryabinin filmed and took samples from the Daldykan river just a few kilometres from the fuel tank which had leaked. By that point the river was a churning mix of diesel and red sludge dredged up from the riverbed by the force of the leak. Norilsk's rivers have turned red before and the chemical residues have sunk to the bottom, killing all life there. Nothing has lived in those rivers for decades.

In his capacity as deputy head of the local environmental watchdog, Mr Ryabinin says he insisted that he be allowed to fly further north to check the levels of contamination in Lake Pyasino and beyond.

Nornickel at the time claimed the lake was untouched by the spill. Mr Ryabinin says his boss encouraged him to let things be.

"I can't be sure I would have found anything, but this sort of confrontation - making sure I didn't go there with a camera, let alone with bottles for taking samples, it was all very clear to me. It was the final straw."

Rosprirodnadzor refused to comment to Sky News on Mr Ryabinin's allegations or suggestions that the agency was working hand in hand with Nornickel.

Georgy Kavanosyan is an environmental blogger with a healthy 37,000 following on YouTube. Shortly after the spill, he set out for Lake Pyasino and to the Pyasina River beyond to see how far the diesel had spread.

"We set out at night so that the Norilsk Nickel security wouldn't detect us. I say at night, but they've got polar nights there now, north of the Arctic Circle. So it's still light but it's quieter and we managed to go past all the cordons."

He is one of the few to have provided evidence that the diesel has in fact travelled far beyond where the company admits. Not just the 1,200km (745m) length of Lake Pyasino but into the river beyond.

He says his measurements indicated a volume of hydrocarbons dissolved in the water of between two and three times normal levels. He thinks after he published his findings on YouTube, the authorities' vigilance increased.

Greenpeace Russia have spent the last two weeks trying to obtain samples from Lake Pyasino and the surrounding area. They have faced difficulties getting around and flying their samples out for independent analysis.

They are now waiting for results from a laboratory in St Petersburg but say the samples remain valid technically for just four days after collection and that they weren't able to make that deadline due to the authorities' actively obstructing their work.

Vasily Ryabinin and Elena Sakirko from Greenpeace. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Elena Sakirko from Greenpeace Russia specialises in oil spills and says this has happened to her before. This time, a police helicopter flew to the hunter's hut where they were staying and confiscated the fuel for the boat they were using. Then a deputy for the Moscow city parliament tasked with bringing the samples back from Norilsk was forced to go back empty-handed.

"We were told at the airport we needed permission from the security department of Nornickel," Ms Sakirko says. "We asked them to show us some law or statement to prove that this was legal or what the basis for this was, but they haven't showed us anything and we still don't understand it."

Nornickel announced this week that the critical stage of the diesel spill is over. The company is now finalising dates for a press tour for foreign media and for other international environmentalists.

Mr Ryabinin thinks this should have happened weeks ago.

"If we don't let scientists come to the Arctic region to evaluate the impact of the accident, then in the future if anything similar happens, we won't know what to do."

A spokesperson for Nornickel said the company "is actively cooperating with the scientific community and will meticulously assess both the causes and effects of the accident."

The Russian city of Norilsk. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Nornickel considers permafrost thawing to be the primary cause of the accident, but is waiting for the end of investigation before making a final statement, the spokesperson said.

They added that the company "accepts full responsibility for the incidents on its sites these past two months and holds itself accountable for any infrastructural deficits or poor decisions by personnel.

"The imperative is to do everything to clean up our sites, instil a stronger culture of transparency and safety in our workforce, and ensure that such situations do not occur in the future."
