Fancy sitting back and enjoying some dramatic sailing footage from the comfort of your sofa? We pick the best sailing films on Netflix, Prime and more

serie tv netflix yacht

Recent years have seen a proliferation of sailing films arriving on streaming platforms, with Netflix taking the lead on producing original content but there are many other sailing films on offer on the streaming services that can fulfil your sailing addiction from the couch.

So if you are looking for a documentary about the America’s Cup , thrilling dramas based on true life events then look no further (And just because I was banned from mentioning it in full, here by my fellow staff, you can find Waterworld for rent on Amazon , or on Netflix in some territories… just sayin’)

Best sailing films on Netflix

Untold: The Race of the Century

Another big Netflix production to be released last year, this documentary on the 1983 America’s Cup is bursting with iconic footage and up-close interviews with major players. The story of the 1983 America’s Cup is legendary to those with even a passing interest in sailing, seeing John Bertrand’s Australia II crew beating Dennis Connor’s American Liberty crew to wrest the America’s Cup from the New York Yacht Clubs grasp for the first time in 132 years – the longest winning streak in sporting history.

Even though we all know what happens, it’s still edge of the seat stuff and you can’t help but be reminded (or introduced to) the dizzying drama, which so captured the world and the Australian nation that it led the then Prime Minister of Australia, Bob Hawke to claim: “Any boss who sacks someone for not turning up to work today is a bum,” following the famous victory.

This unflinching documentary film tells the story of Tracy Edwards ’ all-female Whitbread Round the World Race campaign, through raw interviews telling of the personality clashes and huge pressures the team were placed under.

It’s an emotional watch, with fantastic footage from the maxi fleets racing mid-ocean: highly recommended.

True Spirit

The latest sailing film from the streaming giant, True Spirit , takes a look at the story of Jessica Watson one of the the most famous sailors from the late Noughties and early 2010’s phenomenon of multiple teenagers bidding to become the youngest sailor to sail around the world.  Jessica Watson, who set off from Sydney in 2009 aged 16, completed her loop of Antarctica – and a dip north across the Equator in the Pacific Ocean – to return an all-Australian hero after 210 days at sea.

The film is a dramatic retelling of Watson’s story and attempts to tread the fine line between staying true to her story and picking drama out of the narrative. Watson’s story is undoubtedly intriguing and any film taking on the challenge of conveying he long, slow, and arduous experience of the solo adventurer is always going to struggle to weigh realism with drama. But for the most par this stays true enough to the story to make for a satisfying viewing experience.

Adrift  is based on the book  Red Sky in Mourning  – Tami Oldham Ashcraft’s true account of sailing into a Pacific hurricane, dismasting, and then sailing solo under jury rig for 41 days alone to Hawaii.

The true story is astounding but the film plays pretty fast and lose with the facts. For pure entertainment it is still well worth hunting out and the terror of the extreme conditions does come across on the screen. You get to marvel as Tami manages to solve the catalogue of near voyage-ending disasters – no matter how implausible some of it might seem.

Pure escapism, and a reminder that when the chips are down there is usually a way out.

Best sailing films on Prime

This critically acclaimed documentary, by the makers of Touching the Void , tells the tale of the 1968 Golden Globe Race and how Donald Crowhurst falsified his position before mysteriously disappearing. There are impressive amounts of original footage to enjoy over 50 years later.

The 2017 cinematic telling of the 1968 Golden Globe Race , in which Colin Firth delivers a stand-out performance as the complex maverick entrant Donald Crowhurst. There’s a strong emphasis on the family narrative to draw in non-sailing viewers, but the yachting scenes were carefully researched and convincing.

It stands above many other sailing films as a pure viewing experience – helped along by Firth’s considerable talents. For those of us who already know the tragic story of Crowhurst there nothing here to fill in any of the gaps, as you’d expect from a broad-appeal drama, but you cannot help but be moved to relive the story once again.

Morning light

This was a real revelation when it came out and remains a solid documentary.

Fifteen young sailors embark on six months of training with the ultimate aim to sail a TP52 across the Pacific Ocean taking part in the TRANSPAC.

The premise is that this young, inexperienced crew (made up of 18-23 year olds) sailing  Morning Light  race the 2,300 miles against some of sailing’s top professionals.

The whole thing was funded by Roy Disney and remains a stunning testament to the rigours of racing and sailing offshore, and how much can be achieved by young sailors give a chance.

Best sailing films elsewhere

Chasing tokyo.

Chasing Tokyo is available to stream from the RYA and is an emotional watch. Filmed over a full year, it follows the British Sailing Team athletes as they readied themselves for the strangest Olympic Games in history – and the parents and partners who were left behind when the sailors headed out to Tokyo.

The film crews had unprecedented access to the sailors as they navigated lockdowns, covid testing, and disrupted preparations, and the medal hopefuls candidly shared their dreams and fears. It’s an insightful view of the strange balance of tension and monotony, life-changing highs and soul-crushing lows, of life as an Olympic athlete.

The documentary gives an intriguing glimpse inside the ‘medal factory’, the machinery of the British Sailing Team which has made it consistently the most successful Olympic sailing team in the world. The legacy of London 2012, and the importance of the team’s home base in Portland – with all its quirks and characters – stands out.

Must watch viewing for anyone with an interest in the physical and mental toll the Olympics can take on professional athletes.

This one takes a bit of detective work to find, but the full documentary is hosted online and well worth a watch. In contrast to True Spirit , it’s made up of real videos shot by teen Laura Dekker as she sailed around the world in 2010.

Without cinematic production and following Dekker’s stopping route it’s a much less dramatic view of sailing around the world, though no less gripping for it, and a fascinating insight into a remarkable teen. Those who came away from True Spirit frustrated by some of the dramatic license taken may well want to watch this.

It’s impossible to watch  the Untold: The Race of the Century story – or indeed any America’s Cup film – without referring back to Wind , the 1992 movie telling of how America lost, and won back the Cup.

Like any Hollywood interpretation there are a few cringeworthy moments, and I wouldn’t recommend watching it with a sailmaker, but it’s a warm-hearted film with some great 12-Metre race scenes, and the memorable catchphrase “Hoist the Whomper!”.

By Steph Loseby   4 March 2022

The luxury 44m (144ft) superyacht LEIGHT STAR has wowed audiences in her debut appearance on the thrilling docudrama Inventing Anna , which has already proven a huge hit after ranking number one on Netflix’s top 10 ‘most-watched TV and film series'.

Inspired by a true story, the show follows Anna Sorokin, a Russian fraudster who fools New York's elite by posing as socialite Anna Delvey, a German heiress immaculately dressed in Balenciaga and Chanel, dripping in designer jewelry, handbags and expensive sunglasses.

Anna Delvey on board Caprilla Yacht, also known as Leight Star

A number of scenes take place on board the luxury yacht LEIGHT STAR, which has been renamed ‘Caprilla’ for her debut in this gripping nine-episode drama.

These scenes are set around the beautiful Balearic island of Ibiza, providing the perfect cruising grounds for Anna and her friends to wine and dine, and – most importantly for the fake heiress – close business deals.

The real star of the show

Superyacht LEIGHT STAR is an elegant 44m motor yacht, originally built in 1984, with a further refit in 2009. Boasting a beautiful exterior and interior design by Douglas Sharp, the vessel offers flexible accommodation for up to 12 guests in 6 cabins, along with a wealth of convivial spaces primed for relaxation and entertainment.

The superyacht is often chartered by big brands, including the well-known fashion house GUESS, as well as featuring in numerous movies, music videos and advertising campaigns. Her base port is in the prestigious Marina Del Rey, near to Los Angeles, making her a prime choice for screen debuts.

How much does she cost to charter?

She currently has an asking price of $122,000 for a 7-day charter, although she is also available for day and weekend charters.

Who owns LEIGHT STAR?

The motor yacht belongs to Howard Leight, founder of Malibu Rocky Oaks winery and Howard Leight Industries. The Leight family originally bought the yacht as they were looking for an ideal place to park their helicopters.

As a pilot himself, Howard wanted to avoid landing in airports when doing business so he utilized the yacht as his helipad. Leight’s father purchased the yacht in 1996, with the vessel undergoing a complete refit in 2009, transforming it into a modern chic vessel, perfect for luxury yacht charter vacations .

Why charter a superyacht?

A crewed superyacht offers privacy, exclusivity and above all, a luxurious way to discover some of the world’s most beautiful destinations. Every superyacht boasts an array of amenities that make your vacation all the more lavish and unique.

LEIGHT STAR provides an array of stylish amenities including a large steam room, an observation lounge and a well-equipped gym so that you can keep up with your fitness routine while at sea.

The Super-Yacht Featured in The Crown Is Available to Book

You and 11 guests can charter the “ titania ,” which was used for filming iconic scenes featuring dodi and diana in the hit netflix show..

Make your Crown vacation fantasies a reality by booking the super-yacht featured in the hit Netflix show.

Those watching the sixth and final season of Netflix’s The Crown are familiar with scenes featuring the late Princess Diana (played by Elizabeth Debicki this season) and her boyfriend Dodi Al-Fayed (played by Khalid Abdalla) onboard the Al-Fayed family’s extremely luxurious yacht.

If it’s got you dreaming of sitting on the end of a diving board above the Mediterranean Sea in a turquoise bathing suit, well, we have good news for you: You can charter the yacht for a cool $615,000 per week during the off-season.

Living room area on the Titania yacht with a grand piano in the background and several couches and arm chairs

There may have been some tense moments between Diana and Dodi on the yacht, but that doesn’t take away from its splendor.

The 239-foot super-yacht featured in the show this season is called Titania and it’s listed for charter with luxury boat charter company Burgess , which refers to itself as the “go-to yacht brokerage for television and film.” According to Burgess, Titania was used as a stand-in for Mohamed Al-Fayed’s Codecasa super-yacht Bash (then named Jonikal ). The yacht famously hosted the princess, her two sons William and Harry (played by Rufus Kampa and Fflyn Edwards), and her boyfriend Dodi Al-Fayed on a trip to St. Tropez in 1997, a week before she and Dodi died in Paris. Their time on the yacht, and some of the iconic paparazzi photos of it, are recreated in part one of season six.

A bedroom on the Titania yacht with wood paneling details and a wall of windows

While some of the decor was designed to align more with the 1990s time frame of the show, the Titania super-yacht still exudes the same opulence.

“When it came to scenes of Diana and Dodi on the yacht, they did indeed film those moments on a boat on the Mediterranean,” writes Lucy Ford in an article for Netflix’s companion website for fans, Tudum. She quotes Debicki as saying, “It was a very big, fancy boat. It was enormous and kind of outrageous and exactly what the story needed. That was pretty extraordinary, to be on a big boat like that with bedrooms the size of people’s apartments. We never really took that for granted.”

Production designer Martin Childs told Tudum, “The whole schedule was based around the availability of the biggest yacht.”

The Titania , which is that biggest yacht, was built by luxury yacht company Lürssen in 2006 and has undergone two major makeovers since then. It was originally designed by naval architect Espen Øino, and boasts a light and airy interior with dark wood trim and blue and white textiles, as well as plenty of large windows and outdoor space. The yacht has seven cabins, including two owner’s suites, and sleeps up to 12 guests. Each cabin has a spacious en suite marble bathroom.

And while the Titania is a contemporary vessel, with modern furnishings and finishes, according to Tudum, the team had to “’90s-ify” the yacht’s interiors for filming. This involved adding “bulky lamps, varnished teak wood, and particular shades of turquoise and cream,” reports Ford. “The yacht obviously exists as a contemporary yacht,” Alison Harvey, the Crown’s head set decorator told Tudum. “We just had to bring in more ’90s fabric and more ’90s-flavor pictures and paintings and make it a little less on point in terms of proper super-yacht decor today.”

A pool with a swim-up bar on the "Titania" yacht

Among the many showstoppers onboard the Titania is a pool with a swim-up bar with ocean views.

The Titania includes a sea-level beach club, a pool and Jacuzzi with a swim-up bar, a sauna, a state-of-the-art fitness center with a personal trainer, a massage room with an onboard masseuse, a beauty salon with a beautician, and a sky lounge with a drop-down cinema. A 21-person crew attends to guests’ every need.

Also included in the weekly charter, which ranges from $615,000 to $715,000 per week, are two boat tenders, two Jet Skis, two sailing dinghies, two Seabobs, two stand-up paddleboards, two kayaks, an e-Foil, surfboards, snorkeling and diving gear, water skis, and inflatable aquatic slides and jumping pads.

Netflix adds original programming at such a steady clip that it can be hard to keep up with which of its dramas, comedies and reality shows are must-sees. And that’s not including all the TV series Netflix picks up from broadcast and cable networks. Below is our regularly updated guide to the 50 best shows on Netflix in the United States. Each recommendation comes with a secondary pick, too, for 100 suggestions in all. (Note: Netflix sometimes removes titles without notice.)

We also have lists of the best movies on Netflix , Max and Amazon Prime Video , along with the best TV and movies on Hulu and Disney+

serie tv netflix yacht

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ (2013-21)

An ensemble sitcom in the spirit of both “Barney Miller” and “Parks and Recreation,” this show about New York City police detectives stars Andy Samberg as a goofball very good at cracking cases, alongside his precinct’s assortment of amusing eccentrics, led by a stoic captain, played by the late Andre Braugher. The co-creators Dan Goor and Michael Schur skillfully weave the cops’ episodic comic adventures into larger stories, with sudden turns and lingering consequences. The result is a series that works as both compelling crime fiction and as a warm, weird workplace comedy. Our critic called it “mild, affable and familiar,” and “a show the whole family can snicker at.” (If you like amiable and offbeat crime-solving stories, also try “ Monk .”)

Watch it on Netflix

‘The Gentlemen’ (2024-present)

The cult-favorite British writer-director-producer Guy Ritchie re-enters the world of his violent and funny 2019 action-comedy “The Gentlemen” with this similarly pulpy series. Theo James stars as Eddie, a wayward aristocrat who inherits his family’s failing estate, along with its ties to multiple crime families. He soon finds himself playing gangster and running afoul of some very rich bad guys, played by Peter Serafinowicz, Ray Winstone and Giancarlo Esposito, among others. What our film critic Manohla Dargis wrote about the movie applies here as well: “The point is cleverness and looking cool, though, mostly the movie is about Ritchie’s own conspicuous pleasure directing famous actors having a lark, trading insults, making mischief.” (If you prefer a more historical perspective on U.K. tough guys, watch the decades-spanning crime saga “ Peaky Blinders ,” starring Oscar winner Cillian Murphy.)

‘Suits’ (2011-19)

One of TV’s longest-running legal dramas is about a brilliant college dropout named Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), who is hired as an attorney at a high-powered New York firm thanks to Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), a rainmaker with loose ethics. Meghan Markle — yes, the actress who married Prince Harry — plays Rachel Zane, a principled paralegal who falls for Mike and helps protect him from his many rivals, both inside and outside the offices of Pearson Specter. Our critic wrote that the show is about “the snappy banter among the ever-circling pool of sharks at Pearson Specter and the schadenfreude of watching them tear one another apart on a weekly basis.” (“ Royal Pains ” is another entertaining show about the problem of rich folks, who seek the help of a concierge medical practice in the Hamptons.) Watch it on Netflix

‘One Day’ (2024)

Although David Nicholls’ novel “One Day” has already been adapted into a 2011 movie, this 14-episode TV mini-series is more the ideal form for the story, which covers 20 years in the lives of two University of Edinburgh classmates. The artsy Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) and the posh Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall) have one painfully awkward date after graduation in 1988, then spend much of their young adulthood crossing paths but failing to become a couple. “One Day” revisits each of them the same day each year, tracking the changes in their careers and relationships. It’s a sweeping tale about the lives and times of two people who might be a perfect match, if they could just stay in the same place long enough. (“ Emily in Paris ” is another breezy, romantic Europe-set dramedy.) Watch it on Netflix

‘The Wonder Years’ (2021-23)

The remake of the beloved 1980s and ’90s sitcom “The Wonder Years” has an inspired premise. While the original show followed a white suburban teenager through the turbulence of the late 1960s and early ’70s, the new version considers what that same era was like for a middle-class Black kid (Elisha Williams) in Alabama. Race is at the center of a lot of the new show’s stories, but as with the original, the remake is just as concerned with family, friendships, school, the changing times and growing up. Our critic wrote , “It all goes down gently, with a wry wistfulness that will not surprise anyone who watched the original series.” (For another excellent, culturally specific coming-of-age dramedy, watch “ Never Have I Ever .”)

‘Top Chef’ (2006-present)

Cooking competitions do well on TV because kitchen stress and culinary creativity are both highly relatable to most home cooks. Few shows have captured this as well as “Top Chef,” which for over 20 seasons (only some of which are available on Netflix) has assembled some of the most talented chefs from around the world for a contest that has become as prestigious as it is entertaining. Our critic wrote , “For all its generically hyped-up drama, cheesy gimmickry and abject fealty to the tropes of reality television, ‘Top Chef’ really is about cooking: what goes into it; what comes out of it; what reliably succeeds in the kitchen and on the plate; what predictably doesn’t.” (Also stream “ The Great British Baking Show ,” a similarly involving reality competition series.)

‘Top Boy’ (2011-23)

Similar to “The Wire” in both its subject and its complexity, this British series follows various drug dealers and gang members as they jostle for control of a rough London neighborhood. The first two seasons (filed on Netflix under the title “ Top Boy: Summerhouse ”) introduce Dushane (Ashley Walters) and Sully (Kane Robinson, a.k.a. Kano), whose partnership frays when rivals start encroaching on their turf. The remaining three “Top Boy” seasons are more ambitious, as Dushane’s business takes him to other countries, populated by new enemies. Our writer called the show “a very English, very gritty example of modern crime drama.” (“ Griselda ” offers another deep dive into the international drug trade.) Watch it on Netflix

‘American Nightmare’ (2024)

This true-crime docu-series revisits a story that made national headlines in 2015: the strange case of Denise Huskins, whom the police and the FBI claimed had faked her own kidnapping, aided by her boyfriend Aaron Quinn, in a scenario compared to the movie “Gone Girl.” After the media buzz died down, further investigation revealed that Huskins and Quinn had actually told the truth, and that the local law enforcement had badly failed the couple. “American Nightmare” features extended interviews with both Huskins and Quinn, who describe in riveting detail the horrors they experienced and the miserable aftermath, when they were re-victimized by the people who were supposed to be serving and protecting them. (“ Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal ” is another twisty true story about justice unduly delayed.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Delicious in Dungeon’ (2024)

Based on Ryoko Kui’s manga series of the same name, the animated “Delicious in Dungeon” is a lightly comic fantasy adventure with a culinary twist. When a band of treasure hunters loses a member of their party to a dragon in a large, elaborate, multilevel dungeon, they decide that rather than regrouping and resupplying, they will press ahead and survive by eating whatever monsters they can slay. In each episode, the heroes dodge traps and venture into new, strange areas, while stopping regularly to make dazzling gourmet meals. The result is an anime that is at once imaginative, exciting and endearingly bizarre. (The stop-motion animated “ Pokémon Concierge ” is another unusual, entertaining variation on conventional anime.)

‘This Is Us’ (2016-22)

This popular domestic melodrama follows multiple generations of the Pearsons in episodes that typically cut between their past, present and occasionally their future. The Emmy-winning Sterling K. Brown plays Randall, the adopted brother of biological twins Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Kevin (Justin Hartley), the children of Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore). Scattered across the country and leading different lives, the Pearson siblings remain bonded by the challenges they faced in childhood, gradually revealed in stories that touch on how families overcome their flaws. Our critic praised the “cleverly turned dialogue and well-inhabited performances” and promised, “It will leave no button on your psychic control panel unmashed.” (The decades-spanning drama “ Firefly Lane ” should also appeal to “This Is Us” fans.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Fool Me Once’ (2024)

Based on a Harlan Coben novel, this thriller series begins with an irresistible premise. Michelle Keegan plays Maya, a former military helicopter pilot still reeling from her husband’s recent murder when she suddenly sees him appear on a nanny cam at their house. While she and a burned-out police detective (Adeel Akhtar) separately investigate the mystery, they each stumble upon a possible conspiracy involving Maya’s wealthy mother-in-law (Joanna Lumley) and the death of another one of her family members. Typical of a Coben story, “Fool Me Once” is packed with surprises; but what makes it so compelling is the relatable reactions of the heroine, who tries to wrest control of a situation that makes no sense. (Netflix carries multiple Coben adaptations, including another exciting British miniseries, “ Stay Close .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘Carol & The End of the World’ (2023)

This deadpan animated comedy puts the monotone voice of character actress Martha Kelly to great use in the role of Carol, a woman struggling to cope with the news of an impending apocalypse. While nearly everyone around her fills their final days by checking items off their bucket lists, Carol settles in with a group of folks who prefer to keep clocking in at an office and doing busywork. Created by Dan Guterman (a writer on “Community” and “Rick and Morty”), this series has a poignant, knowing take on people who fear change. Our critic said the show “has a shaggy, slightly ethereal charm and sympathetic characters whose varied reactions to the end of the world ring largely true.” (The animated comic fantasy epic “ Disenchantment ” is also about a woman trying to find a welcoming place.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Young Sheldon’ (2017-present)

This prequel spinoff of the hit sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” is built around that show’s most popular character: Sheldon Cooper, an emotionally aloof and fervently fastidious genius, seen here as a precocious adolescent (played by Iain Armitage) in a small Texas town in the late 1980s and early ’90s. Jim Parsons, who played Sheldon on the original show, is an executive producer and also narrates each episode. “Young Sheldon” is emotionally richer than its more broadly comic parent series, telling stories that reach beyond one eccentric kid to encompass the very different lives of his siblings, parents, grandmother and teachers, all coping with challenges to their middle-American traditions and values during rapidly changing times. (For another touching, funny family dramedy featuring an unusually bright youngster, stream “ Gilmore Girls .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘My Life With the Walter Boys’ (2023-present)

Based on an Ali Novak novel, this heartwarming family drama is set in picturesque rural Colorado, where the orphaned New York City teen Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) tries to make a temporary home for herself after her mom’s best friend Katherine Walter (Sarah Rafferty) and her rancher husband George Walter (Marc Blucas) become her legal guardians. The title of “My Life With the Walter Boys” refers to the many sons and cousins in the household, most of whom try to help their new roommate adjust to her abrupt changes — except for the two rival Walter brothers who want to date her. The series is centered on Jackie, but it is also an old-fashioned ensemble show with an eclectic group of characters. (The melodrama “ Virgin River ” also balances romance, heartbreak, conflict and warmth in another stunningly beautiful location.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ (2023)

This lively animated series adapts both the cartoonist Bryan Lee O’Malley’s popular graphic novels and the director Edgar Wright’s 2010 live-action “Scott Pilgrim” movie. (Nearly all the film’s original cast members return as voice actors.) The TV version starts in the same place as its predecessors, following a dopey Toronto indie rocker named Scott (Michael Cera), who can only have a relationship with a cool girl named Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) if he defeats her “seven evil exes” in video game-style combat. But O’Malley and the show’s co-creator, BenDavid Grabinski, digress from the main plot, combining outlandish comedy with a more thoughtful look at what it means to be young and romantically reckless. Our critic said the show “exhibits the kind of imagination one would expect from a story featuring superpowered vegans and spying robots.” (For more straightforward animated superhero action, watch “ Justice League .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘Holey Moley’ (2019-22)

This over-the-top miniature golf competition strikes just the right balance between reality TV absurdity and genuine sports drama. The veteran sportscaster Joe Tessitore and the comedian Rob Riggle provide the earnest commentary as various colorfully attired golfers — many of them actually quite skilled at putting — tackle a course full of crazy obstacles and punishing penalties. As the “Holey Moley” competitors putt while wearing suits of armor, or take aim at a green shaped like a pinball machine, or try to make their way past portable toilets with abruptly opening doors (among other indignities), viewers may be surprised to find how genuinely invested they become in the outcome of the game. (The cooking competition “ Nailed It! ” is another delightfully silly and ridiculously challenging game show.) Watch it on Netflix

‘The Crown’ (2016-23)

By the time this sweeping historical drama is done, the writer-producer Peter Morgan will have spent six seasons and 60 episodes covering the changes in the United Kingdom throughout Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, from her coronation to the early 2000s. Claire Foy plays the queen for the first two seasons, which take place from the late 1940s through the mid-60s. Olivia Colman takes over in Season 3, which begins in 1964 and moves the story into England’s psychedelic and punk eras. Imelda Staunton closes out the series as a monarch in crisis, rocked by the scandals surrounding Prince Charles and his wife, Diana. The A-list cast and the lavish production are the primary selling points of “The Crown,” which our critic called “an orgy of sumptuous scenes and rich performances.” (For another addicting take on British high society, watch “ Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘Blue Eye Samurai’ (2023-)

This action-packed, blood-spattered adult animated series draws inspiration from the great samurai cinema and television of the 1960s and ’70s; but it has an attitude and sensibility all of its own, courtesy of its writers/creators Michael Green and Amber Noizumi. Maya Erskine is the voice of Mizu, a masterless wanderer in 17th century Japan, who has to disguise both her gender and her mixed-race parentage as she searches for the European man who may be her father. Mizu’s quest provides the spine for “Blue Eye Samurai,” but Green and Noizumi use that story — a sprawling and gripping saga — as a way to explore the conflicts and contradictions of the Edo era. (For another visionary animated series, watch “ Love Death & Robots .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘Face Off’ (2011-18)

As fun as it to watch people cooking food competitively on TV, some of the best reality series feature contestants who are skilled at more arcane arts and crafts. The long-running “Face Off” is as enlightening as it is entertaining, taking viewers inside a strange and remarkable theatrical subculture: the world of professional makeup artists. The show’s challenges allow the participants to display their talents, ingenuity and imagination as they work with their models to create the kind of characters who populate fantasy and horror movies. Rather than demystifying the process, “Face Off” makes these effects look even more special. (For more fascinating scenes of craftspeople at work, watch “ Blown Away ,” a reality competition for glassblowers.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Six Feet Under’ (2001-05)

One of HBO’s first critically acclaimed prestige dramas retains its power to shock and move audiences nearly two decades after its brilliant final episode aired. Created by the Oscar-winning “American Beauty” screenwriter Alan Ball, the series is set in a Los Angeles funeral home, where brothers Nate (Peter Krause) and David (Michael C. Hall) try to overcome difficult market conditions and their widely divergent personalities to keep their business afloat — all while looking after their mom (Frances Conroy) and younger sister (Lauren Ambrose), whose proximity to death has made them both compassionate and reckless. Our critic called the show “a marvelous nighttime soap of the first rank” and “a merciless hour of sex and death.” (The oddly similar horror-tinged Norwegian dramedy “ Post Mortem: No One Dies in Skarnes ” is also set in a funeral home.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Bodies’ (2023)

This offbeat British mystery series concerns a murder investigation that takes place in four different years — 1890, 1941, 2023 and 2053 — but with only one victim, whose corpse turns up in the same spot in London in each era. Stephen Graham plays the mysterious figure whose involvement in a dangerous, decades-spanning conspiracy is the key to unlocking the truth about this strange crime. Adapted by the writer-producer Paul Tomalin from a graphic novel, “Bodies” is like four European detective shows rolled into one with a jolt of mind-bending science fiction. (“ Mindhunter ” is another smart crime procedural, based on the true story of the F.B.I. unit that pioneered the art of criminal profiling.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Neon’ (2023-present)

This high-energy dramedy is set in the world of reggaeton, following an aspiring musician named Santi (Tyler Dean Flores) as he and his best friends, Ness (Emma Ferreira) and Felix (Jordan Mendoza), move to Miami and work together to get Santi noticed in a competitive industry. Co-created by Shea Serrano and Max Searle — with reggaeton legend Daddy Yankee serving as one of the executive producers — “Neon” is a kind of pop music procedural, covering the steps and missteps of a talented young artist as he discovers that while good vibes and catchy songs may get him through the door, he can’t always trust the people waiting inside. (“ Ballers ” is another dramedy about hustlers in a high-stakes entertainment arena, with Dwayne Johnson playing a financial adviser to pro football players.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Love Is Blind’ (2020-present)

This popular reality dating series is framed as a social experiment, intended to determine if physical attraction is a necessary component of a sturdy relationship. Participants in different rooms embark on a series of get-to-know-you conversations until they are ready to get engaged. The pair then sees each other for the first time, after which the viewers follow them and other newly matched-up couples in the weeks leading up to their weddings. According to a Times Opinion editor , “Watching the series is like playing a surreal version of ‘The Game of Life’: The most basic universal stages of adulthood — or in this case, courtship — are condensed into a convenient quickie narrative for viewers’ consumption.” (The reality dating series “ The Ultimatum ” also features contestants who are being pushed to the altar.) Watch it on Netflix

‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ (2023)

The writer-director Mike Flanagan returns to the literary horror of his Netflix favorites “The Haunting of Hill House” and “The Haunting of Bly Manor” with this spooky mini-series, which riffs on multiple Edgar Allan Poe characters and stories. Part social satire and part gothic melodrama, the show stars Bruce Greenwood as the head of a scandal-plagued, opiate-peddling family, whose rise and fall is told via flashbacks. A strong cast includes Carl Lumbly, Mark Hamill, Carla Gugino, Mary McDonnell and Henry Thomas, who bring personality and humor to an otherwise grim tale of greed and revenge. (Flanagan also created “ Midnight Mass ,” a Stephen King-like mini-series about supernatural phenomena in a tiny fishing village.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Lupin’ (2021-present)

In the early 20th century, Maurice Leblanc wrote dozens of stories about the mysterious gentleman thief Arsène Lupin. In the French adventure series “Lupin,” Omar Sy plays Assane Diop, the son of a Senegalese immigrant and a fervent fan of Leblanc’s books. The twisty and action-packed plot jumps between the past and the present, teasing out the reasons the crafty Assane is so determined to use his heist-planning mastery to wreck the reputation of a powerful family — and considering the consequences if he succeeds. The Times called this show “fleet-footed” and “deliberately old-fashioned,” adding that, “For fans of the original stories, Easter eggs abound.” (For a different kind of action series, try the Israeli thriller “ Fauda .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘Outlander’ (2014-present)

“Game of Thrones” gets more attention, but “Outlander” has been just as successful at adapting a sprawling book series — and at mixing political intrigue with high fantasy. Based on Diana Gabaldon’s novels about a time traveling 20th century English doctor (Caitriona Balfe) and her romance with an 18th century Scottish rebel (Sam Heughan), the show offers big battles, wilderness adventure and frank sexuality. It has a rare historical scope as well, covering the changing times and factional conflicts in Europe and the Americas, across centuries. Our critic wrote that it should appeal to viewers who “have a weakness for muskets, accents and the occasional roll in the heather.” (The postapocalyptic zombie drama “ The Walking Dead ” is another addicting epic fantasy television series.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Sex Education’ (2019-23)

Some of Netflix’s best original series are about teenage life but not really made for the teens themselves — or at least not made for them to watch with their parents. In the funny, raunchy British dramedy “Sex Education,” Asa Butterfield and Emma Mackey play unpopular teenagers who struggle with their own sex lives yet find they have valuable insights into their classmates’ hangups, which they dispense to their desperate peers in paid therapy sessions. Our critic described the show as “timely but not hamfistedly topical, feminist, with a refreshing lack of angst about its subject.” (If you enjoy these kinds of mature teen antics, you should also stream “ Derry Girls .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘Band of Brothers’ (2001)

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg produced this mini-series adaptation of the World War II history book by Stephen A. Ambrose about the experiences of a company of parachute infantrymen, from basic training through the end of the war. Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston give standout performances as two of Easy Company’s officers, in a drama that tells the story of the regiment’s progression across Europe, one grueling battle at a time. Our critic wrote , “It balances the ideal of heroism with the violence and terror of battle, reflecting what is both civilized and savage about war.” (The same creative team also made an equally excellent mini-series about another World War II combat theater: “ The Pacific .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘Wrestlers’ (2023-present)

The team behind the richly detailed Netflix sports documentaries “Last Chance U” and “Cheer” heads to Kentucky to spend time with the performers of the Ohio Valley Wrestling league, where the veteran wrestler and promoter Al Snow works with a roster of small-time athletes to find ways to boost business. As always, the series’s director and producer, Greg Whiteley, finds drama not just in his subjects’ big, life-changing moments but in their smaller everyday decisions. In a Times article about the show, Chris Vognar writes , “Whiteley is always after what is real, which in this case sets up a rich irony: a painstakingly authentic look at an endeavor often derided for being fake.” (Be sure to watch the series that made the “Wrestlers” creative team’s reputation: “ Last Chance U .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘Alice in Borderland’ (2020-22)

Based on a Haro Aso manga series, this wild Japanese science-fiction thriller is set in a ruined parallel-universe version of Tokyo, where a group of mischievous gamers are drafted into seemingly silly contests, vying for the right to play again another day. The flashy visual style and the sometimes shocking danger inherent in the games makes “Alice in Borderland” comparable to the likes of “The Hunger Games,” “Battle Royale” and Netflix’s popular Korean thriller “Squid Game,” though this show has a uniquely dark tone and acerbic wit. It is both a grand spectacle and a pointed take on how and why young people escape from reality. (For another fictionalized version of an extreme reality competition, watch “ Squid Game .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘BoJack Horseman’ (2014-20)

It’s hard to explain “BoJack Horseman” to the uninitiated. It’s a showbiz satire about a self-absorbed former TV star trying to mount a comeback. It’s an existential melodrama about the fear of fading relevancy. Oh, and it’s a cartoon in which that former star is an alcoholic horse. The creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg uses this sneakily soulful story about a rich has-been as a way to comment on the soul-sucking grind of show business and to illustrate the insidiousness of addiction and mental illness — but peppered with jokes. Our critic wrote : “The absurdist comedy and hallucinatory visuals match the series’s take on Hollywood as a reality-distortion field. But the series never takes an attitude of easy superiority to its showbiz characters.” (“ Powerpuff Girls ” is another creative animated series, but for a younger audience.) Watch it on Netflix

‘The Witcher’ (2019-present)

This adaptation of the novels and short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski provides plenty of rip-roaring pulp adventure. Henry Cavill plays the masterly monster hunter Geralt, who travels the land plying his trade while crossing paths with aristocrats and peasants. The show’s focus is mainly on intense sword-and-sorcery action — with the amusingly jaded Geralt at the center — but there is complexity to the storytelling in “The Witcher,” thanks to the hero’s fascinating history and a narrative that weaves together different timelines. Praising Cavill, our critic said he “brings a convincing physical presence and some wry humanity and emotional depth.” (For another imaginative and absorbing fantasy series, watch the postapocalyptic road trip adventure “ Sweet Tooth .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘Mo’ (2022-present)

The stand-up comic Mohammed Amer turns his memories of growing up as a Palestinian refugee in Houston into a well-balanced mix of comedy and drama in his series “Mo.” Amer plays the title character: a burly, wry, Muslim American hustler, trying to make a life for himself while staying off the government’s radar because his citizenship status is shaky. The show thoughtfully explores what it’s like to grow up in a country — and to embrace much of its culture — while often being made to feel unwelcome. Our critic wrote , “The show slides among English, Spanish and Arabic — and between goofy and serious — to create a rich and vivid portrait.” (The high school dramedy “ On My Block ” tells similar stories about young people who sometimes feel excluded from the American dream.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Insecure’ (2016-2021)

The writer and actress Issa Rae brought some of her own experiences to the “hangout sitcom” genre with this sharp and raunchy series about young Black women balancing boyfriends, friendships and career ambitions in Los Angeles. Rae plays Issa Dee, who alongside her best friend, Molly (Yvonne Orji), tries to be a positive force in the world and figure out her future — while also having fun and making mistakes. Our critic wrote , “Its stories of buppie frustration and romance, set in Los Angeles, aren’t revolutionary, but they’re funny and moving, powered by Ms. Rae’s ear for dialogue of a kind of crystalline, pitch-perfect profanity.” (The sketch series “ Key & Peele ” also often finds the humor in the lives of middle-class Black professionals.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Wednesday’ (2022-present)

Tim Burton joins with the “Smallville” producing team of Alfred Gough and Miles Millar for this spinoff of the long-running pop culture phenomenon “The Addams Family,” which features the elaborate gothic sets and cartoonish style beloved by fans of the franchise’s previous TV shows, movies, stage productions and original cartoons. “Wednesday” stars Jenna Ortega as the Addams family’s stubbornly deadpan, gloom-and-doom-loving teenage daughter, who unflappably handles the stresses of adolescence and the supernatural weirdness happening in and around her high school. Our critic wrote of Ortega’s performance, “She gets at the small core of poignancy that’s there among the soap opera machinations and routine scary creature battles.” (The Japanese drama “ The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House ” is another series about youngsters adjusting to a new culture.)

‘Black Mirror’ (2011-present)

Created by Charlie Brooker, the science-fiction anthology series “Black Mirror” is like a 21st century version of “The Twilight Zone,” with a roster of guest stars featuring some of today’s most talented character actors, telling stories drawn from our modern technophobic anxieties. The episodes are slyly plotted and openly cautionary, challenging the audience to ponder how artificial intelligence, social media, computer-generated images and climate change are warping our perceptions of reality. In 2016, our critic called it “hands down the most relevant program of our time.” (For another exciting example of mind-bending TV, watch “ Russian Doll ,” a science-fiction dramedy about a woman stuck reliving the same day.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Seinfeld’ (1989-98)

“Seinfeld” is often referred to by its creators, Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, as “a show about nothing,” but that is only partly true. Ostensibly about a self-absorbed stand-up comic (Seinfeld) and his cranky friends, the series became one of the most popular sitcoms of the 1990s thanks to its impressively intricate plots, which convert life’s minor annoyances into complicated and absurd adventures. Reviewing the early episodes, our critic praised Seinfeld himself, saying he is “fascinated with minute details and he collects them with a keen sense of discernment.” (Seinfeld keeps exploring his persnickety obsessions while interviewing some of the funniest people in showbiz in “ Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson’ (2019-present)

The former “Saturday Night Live” and “Detroiters” writer and performer Tim Robinson created (with Zach Kanin) this fast-paced and funny sketch series, which is steeped in the comedy of obnoxiousness. Nearly every segment is about how people react when someone in their immediate vicinity behaves rudely or strangely. The show is both a sharp depiction of how social mores sometimes fail us and — through three seasons now — a reliable generator of viral memes. Our critic wrote that Robinson “channels a recognizable brand of Midwestern ticked-off-ness: a freak-out that bursts through his mild exterior like a volcano erupting out of a lake of mayonnaise.” (For another divine comedy about hellish human behavior, watch “ The Good Place .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘Chimp Empire’ (2023)

Like a lot of the nature documentaries on Netflix, the four-part “Chimp Empire” takes such a close-up look at its subjects that viewers may feel like as if they were being transported to a wondrous fantasy world, populated by fictional creatures. Unlike those other docu-series, this one tells a story that feels more like a pulp thriller than an ecology lesson. The director James Reed (an Oscar winner for co-directing “My Octopus Teacher”), with the help of Mahershala Ali’s narration and some astonishingly vivid cinematography, delivers a gripping tale about rival chimpanzee families battling for control of their territory in Uganda’s Ngogo rainforest. (“ Our Planet ” is another visually splendid nature series, equal parts educational and beautiful.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Documentary Now!’ (2015-present)

The former “Saturday Night Live” writers and performers Seth Meyers, Fred Armisen and Bill Hader are part of the core creative team for this esoteric comedy series, which parodies documentaries. But “Documentary Now!” isn’t intended to mock movies like “The Thin Blue Line” and “Original Cast Album: Company.” The show is made by super fans, who can imitate these films’ characters and quote every line while also understanding what makes them special. Our critic wrote that the “humor comes from satirizing the subjects of the documentaries, not the films themselves.” (The similar mockumentary series “ American Vandal ” parodies true-crime documentaries, following earnest Middle American high school kids who gravely investigate the most puerile of crimes.) Watch it on Netflix

‘The Diplomat’ (2023-present)

In this smart and energetic drama, Keri Russell plays a foreign policy expert who lands a surprise appointment to become the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom as part of a larger plan to see if she has to stuff to be vice president. Created by Debora Cahn (a writer-producer who worked on “Homeland” and “The West Wing”), “The Diplomat” is concerned with the ways protocol complicates politics; and it features winning performances by Russell and by Rufus Sewell, who plays the new ambassador’s headline-grabbing husband. Our critic called the show “a political thriller laced with romance and written, with some success, in an Aaron Sorkinesque high-comic, high-velocity style.” (The showbiz dramedy “ Call My Agent! ” is another savvy, fast-paced series about managing powerful people’s egos.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Beef’ (2023-present)

A road-rage incident boils over into an epic feud in “Beef,” a darkly comic thriller about how the pressures of modern life can curdle into envy and frustration. Steven Yeun plays Danny, a hard-working, self-employed contractor who has an unpleasant encounter in a parking lot with Amy (Ali Wong), a more successful small business owner who is overwhelmed with personal and professional stress. The two strangers charge into an escalating war of revenge that brings some renewed purpose to their lives, even as it threatens to wreck everything they have. Our critic wrote , “What makes this one of the most invigorating, surprising and insightful debuts of the past year is how personally and culturally specific its study of anger is.” (“ The Watcher ” is another offbeat mini-series about ordinary people dealing with extraordinary hostility.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Arrested Development’ (2003-19)

One of the most influential sitcoms of the 21st century, “Arrested Development” is ostensibly about an entitled and clueless California family that suffers hard times when its patriarch is thrown in jail. But describing the premise alone does not even begin to capture the complexity of a show packed with so many sight gags, puns and double entendres that sometimes jokes set up in one episode do not land until several episodes later. This series gets funnier as its dense story of privilege and presumption gets more tangled. Our critic wrote , “The humor lies in balancing the characters’ loopiness with sly, satisfying digs at the rich.” (“ Community ” is another classic TV sitcom dense with self-reference.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Cunk on Earth’ (2023)

For over a decade now, the English comedian Diane Morgan has played a character named Philomena Cunk: a gravely serious television host whose documentaries about culture and history get most of the facts hilariously wrong. The five-part series “Cunk on Earth” — created by the “Black Mirror” mastermind Charlie Brooker — is an excellent introduction to Morgan’s sly, knowing spoof of the stubbornly ill-informed. As Cunk talks with real historians about the evolution of human civilization, her ignorance serves as a biting satire of a certain kind of TV personality, who uses pomposity to mask incuriosity. Our critic wrote , “The show’s comic strategy is simple but relentless.” (Nearly every modern absurdist TV parody owes a debt to the seminal British series “ Monty Python’s Flying Circus ,” which is also available on Netflix.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ (2015-20)

Easily the most upbeat sitcom ever made about a woman who escaped from an oppressively patriarchal religious cult, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” stars Ellie Kemper as Kimmy, who somehow keeps her youthful enthusiasm when she arrives in New York City after 15 years imprisoned in a bunker. A stellar supporting cast — including Tituss Burgess as Kimmy’s perpetually jobless roommate, Carol Kane as her activist landlord and Jane Krakowski as her overprivileged boss — brings range to this show’s unusually sunny, zingy vision of 2010s New York. Our critic wrote , “The series leavens wacky absurdity with acid wit and is very funny.” (The “Kimmy” creators, Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, also produced the equally hilarious but under-seen sitcom “ Great News .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘Stranger Things’ (2016-present)

The first season of the retro science-fiction series “Stranger Things” arrived with little hype and quickly became a word-of-mouth sensation. Viewers were enchanted by this pastiche of John Carpenter, Steven Spielberg, Stephen King and John Hughes, all scored to ’80s pop. Subsequent seasons have upped the scale of this story of geeky Indiana teenagers fighting off an invasion of extra-dimensional creatures from “the Upside-Down,” while maintaining the focus on likable characters in a familiar milieu. The show has the look and feel of a big summer blockbuster from 30 years ago — “a tasty trip back to that decade and the art of eeriness,” our critic noted , but “without excess.” (If you prefer ’90s teen nostalgia, try “ Everything Sucks .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘Better Call Saul’ (2015-2022)

The “Breaking Bad” prequel series, “Better Call Saul,” covers the early days of the can-do lawyer Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) as he evolves into the ethically challenged criminal attorney “Saul Goodman.” Jimmy occasionally crosses paths with another “Breaking Bad” regular, the ex-cop Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks), during Mike’s first forays into the Albuquerque drug-trafficking business. Throughout this incredibly entertaining crime story, these two very different men discover the rewards and the perils of skirting the law as they anger powerful enemies and make trouble for their own allies. Our critic wrote , “Cutting against the desperation and violence that frame it, ‘Saul,’ in its dark, straight-faced way, is one of the funniest dramas on television.” (Also a must-see? “ Breaking Bad ,” of course.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Orange Is the New Black’ (2013-19)

Based on Piper Kerman’s memoir about serving time in a minimum security women’s prison, “Orange Is the New Black” is a remarkable showcase for its eclectic cast, depicting a wide spectrum of social classes and sexual orientations. The series was created by Jenji Kohan, who, as our critic wrote , “plays with our expectations by taking milieus usually associated with violence and heavy drama — drug dealing, prison life — and making them the subjects of lightly satirical dramedy.” (For another lively dramedy about feisty women, watch “ GLOW ,” about the 1980s rise of pro wrestling.) Watch it on Netflix

‘Jane the Virgin’ (2014-19)

This spoof of the Latin American soap operas known as telenovelas also wholeheartedly embraces their shtick. “Jane the Virgin” starts as the story of an aspiring writer who is accidentally impregnated through an artificial insemination mix-up. The show then gets wilder, with at least one crazy plot twist per episode — all described with breathless excitement by an omnipresent, self-aware narrator. Our critic called it “delicious and dizzyingly arch.” It’s also emotionally affecting, featuring a nuanced portrait of three generations of Venezuelan-American women in Miami. (For another wild mix of heart-tugging melodrama and wacky comedy, try the musical series “ Crazy Ex-Girlfriend .”) Watch it on Netflix

‘When They See Us’ (2019)

As a producer and director, Ava DuVernay has tackled the Civil Rights Movement, in her Oscar-nominated film “Selma,” and racial bias in the American criminal justice system, in her Emmy-winning documentary “13TH.” In her four-part mini-series “When They See Us,” she dramatizes the story of the Central Park Five, who were convicted of raping and almost killing a jogger in New York City in 1989, then exonerated in 2002. Salamishah Tillet wrote that the Five “emerge as the heroes of their own story — and if we pay heed to the series’s urgent message about criminal justice reform, ours too.” (For another politically pointed true-crime drama stream “ Unbelievable ,” which examines gender bias in policing) Watch it on Netflix

An earlier version of this article misspelled the given name of an actress who plays Queen Elizabeth II in "The Crown." She is Claire Foy, not Clare.

An earlier version of this article referred incorrectly to the participants of “Love Is Blind.” They are in different rooms, not blindfolded.

An earlier version of this roundup misstated the educational background of the character Mike Ross, played by Patrick J. Adams, in “Suits.” He dropped out of college, not law school.

All the 3 Body Problem season 2 news we’ve heard so far

The show already has a jump start on the next two books

Jin Cheng (Jess Hong) pointing at an object off-screen.

Netflix’s sci-fi epic, 3 Body Problem has arrived with plenty of math problems, giant boats, and encoded radio messages to keep its viewers busy for a while. But with season 1 ending on a bit of a cliffhanger, it’s only natural to start thinking about season 2.

While we don’t know exactly what Netflix’s plans are for the show, here’s everything we know about season 2 so far.

[ Ed. note: This story contains spoilers for 3 Body Problem .]

Is 3 Body Problem season 2 happening?

There hasn’t been any official word from Netflix about a new season just yet, but the odds are still pretty good that it happens. Netflix tends to greenlight some of its biggest shows with multiple season deals right out of the gate, and considering the pedigree of creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo , it’s unlikely that the streaming service would pull the plug on such a massive series right away.

That being said, if it somehow turns out that no one watches the show, maybe Netflix won’t want to move forward with this very expensive project. But if it’s a hit, you can bet that season 2 will be on its way soon.

When will 3 Body Problem season 2 come out?

Like predicting stable and chaotic eras, predicting the release date of a season that hasn’t actually been announced isn’t easy. One thing that will determine quite a lot about the release date is whether the scripts for season 2 are ready or not. It’s possible they’ve already been written, but since nothing could be written last summer during the writers strike, it’s also possible that they aren’t quite ready yet — if they’ve been worked on ahead of an official announcement at all.

With all that being said, the earliest it seems likely to see 3 Body Problem season 2 is probably in 2026, but with a show this massive and complex, it’s also possible that a new season could be three or more years away too.

What will 3 Body Problem season 2 be about?

Given how season 1 ends, most of the plot of the second season is likely to be about humanity’s preparation for the San-Ti invasion, and more specifically the Wallfacer program and it’s specially chosen delegates. The series will also likely keep us updated on the rocket that was launched near the end of season 1, the one with Will’s brain on it.

Will season 2 just cover the second book in the series?

Yang Hewen as Bai Mulin talking to Zine Tseng as Young Ye Wenjie in a still from 3 Body Problem

Definitely not. The series took a unique approach to adaptation in its first season, working through the entire plot of book 1, as well the early parts of the plots of both books 2 and 3. This was done as a way to smooth out the character introductions, since the original novels by Cixin Liu follow a different character in each book.

With everything happening at the same time in the Netflix series, we can likely expect season 2 to continue the plots from both book 2, The Dark Forest , and book 3, Death’s End . In fact, it’s possible that Benioff, Weiss, and Woo finish the whole story in season 2, but we’ll have to wait a while to find out.

Should I read the Three-Body Problem book series?

This is a very tricky question. In many ways the series is a pretty faithful adaptation of Liu’s series, but it also makes some of the sci-fi a little bit easier to parse. Known for their dense science of questionable legitimacy, the books in Liu’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past series can certainly elicit mixed reactions. But the die-hard fans absolutely love it, and that should probably be your guiding light. If you loved the series and can’t wait to find out more about the characters and the San-Ti (or the Trisolarans are they’re known in the books) then you should jump in. Otherwise, you’re probably fine to wait for the next season of the show.

Is there another sci-fi series that I can read in the meantime?

Listen, the list of good sci-fi novels to read is endless. If you want a classic, you could read Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series, one of the fundamental and obvious inspirations for Liu’s series.

As for newer books, you could check out Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Children of Time , which deals with a lot of the same themes as The Dark Forest and Death’s End , but in a very different way — though, fair warning, if you hate spiders this one might be a tough read. Another similar book would be Neal Stephenson’s Seveneves , which also has to do with Earth facing a certain kind of doom.
