The cruise ship SeaDream Innovation is an ultra-luxury superyacht project developed for the SeaDream brand. The boat was initially scheduled for launch in 2021, and was to be constructed by the shipbuilding company Damen Group at Damen Shipyards Mangalia (in Mangalia, Romania). For the first time since 2001, SeaDream Yacht Club had plans to expand its fleet with a newbuild vessel , introducing its new "Global Yachting" vacation travel concept. With LOA length 155 m (509 ft), this design has implemented 5-star hotel amenities, gourmet dining, large open-deck spaces (total size 3500 m2 / 37680 ft2), large-sized premium staterooms, top-level service and unique itineraries around the world, including in the polar regions.

On December 2, 2019, SeaDream Yacht Club and Damen Shipyards Group announced the termination of the "SeaDream Innovation" project. SeaDream announced plans to purchase a second-hand vessel in 2020.

History - construction and ownership

The 220-passenger ship SeaDream Innovation by design is very different from the fleetmates SeaDream 1 and SeaDream 2 . Besides its bigger passenger capacity , the boat has larger public areas and venues with modern design, chic furniture, and flowers everywhere.

Decks and Cabins

The SeaDream Innovation ship has a total of 110 staterooms (all outside and in Suite categories) and max passenger capacity 220. The superyacht provides an all-inclusive travel vacation with a 1-to-1 passenger to crew ratio. Standard cabin amenities (offered in each stateroom) include King-size double bed with bedside cabinets, large en-suite bathroom with marble countertops, hot tub, WC, single-sink vanity, under-sink storage, magnifying mirror, massage shower, Bulgari bath amenities, plush cotton bathrobes. Cabin's living-room area has an infotainment center with smart UHDTV (satellite reception, on-demand movies), CD/DVD, Internet outlets, iPod docking station, personalized stationeries, 3-seater sofa with low table, mirrored vanity table with chair, coffee table with armchairs, large wardrobe, electronic safe box (in the closet), large mirrors. Refrigerators and minibars are fully-stocked with complimentary soft drinks, beers, bottled water.

Cabin balconies are furnished with 2 deckchairs and 1 table. Higher-categories suites additionally have a separate bedroom with walk-in closet, double-sink vanity and whirlpool tub in the bathroom, 4-seat dining table, large balconies with sun-loungers and daybeds.

The boat has 9 decks , of which 5 are passenger-accessible and 4 with cabins.

Shipboard facilities and amenities

A delightful feature of SeaDream cruises in warm areas is the beach barbecue "caviar in the surf". Another benefit is the drinks onboard, which except connoisseur wines and premium brands, are all free. All meals in the Dining Room are open seating, all the time. Breakfast typically includes a small array of fruits, bread, cereals, and yogurt at a mini-buffet. Hot dishes are ordered from a menu.

SeaDream customers love entertaining themselves. Entertainment options include an intimate Piano Bar, Top Of The Yacht Bar, Casino, Boutique, Promenade, Spa, Gym, Beauty Salon, Library, Golf Simulator, Main Lounge light music, and first-run movies, outdoor swimming pool (aft-deck location), whirlpool or a great choice of in staterooms' CDs and DVDs. At no cost, passengers may check out iPod stocked with different types of music.

SeaDream Innovation's design features 3 marinas that can be operated simultaneously (watersport-launch platforms providing uninterrupted access to Zodiacs, kayaks, sailboats), in-ocean swimming pool, helideck with 1 helicopter (used for private tours), 1 seaplane, outdoor dining venues, "sleeping under the stars" experience. The water sports marina makes it easy for passengers to snorkel and sail off the stern (aft). Water toys are complimentary and include snorkeling gear, sea kayaks, Hobie Cat (small-sized sail catamaran), banana boat, Jet Skis. The ship also provides complimentary mountain bikes on tours and excursions ashore.

Itineraries

SeaDream Innovation itinerary program starts on September 18, 2021 (inaugural cruise). The cruise ship will operate itineraries visiting all the 7 continents, with over 200 call ports in 49 different countries. Passengers have the chance to explore in ultimate luxury world's most remote destinations, such as Svalbard Islands and Norway's fjords, Antarctica , the Northwest Passage route , Australia New Zealand, the Great Barrier Reef , Oceania, East Asia, Alaska.

During the inaugural season, SeaDream Innovation is scheduled to visit all continents, with over 200 seaports in 49 countries. Season's highlights include:

The shipbuilding contract of the Oslo -based SeaDream Yacht Club with Damen Shipyards Group was signed on March 20, 2019. In 2018 was established Damen Cruise - a subsidiary company specializing in cruise shipbuilding, Damen Shipyards Mangalia is a new joint venture company of Damen Shipyards Group and Romania's Government. The Mangalia yard is on the Black Sea and currently Damen's largest. SeaDream Innovation will be completely constructed and fully outfitted at Damen Mangalia. Vessel's construction is planned to start in October 2019, with scheduled delivery in September 2021.

As of 2019, the shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Group has 36 shipyards for design, construction, and repairs of various types of vessels. Company's portfolio includes tugboats, patrol boats, workboats (supply, fire-fighting), high-speed ships, cargo vessels ( container ships , heavy-lift ships, inland cargo barges, gas carriers, oil tankers, RO-RO ships, RO-PAX/ferries ), as well as mega-yachts, expedition cruise ships, offshore vessels (anchor-handling, buoy-laying, cable-laying, offshore carriers, MPVs/multi-purpose, offshore support, platform supply), naval vessels (amphibious, auxiliary, combatant, training), fishing vessels (trawlers, fish carriers, longliners), research vessels, pontoons and barges, floating drydocks, dredging equipment.

Ship technology

The new SeaDream ship Innovation is a polar-class vessel (Polar Code 6/PC6) with an ice-strengthened hull. The design is similar to Seabourn 's newest ship Seabourn Venture . Following Innovation's delivery in 2021 (construction and outfitting), Damen Cruise also becomes SeaDream's long-term partner providing maritime services throughout vessel's entire lifecycle, including maintenance, repairs, refurbishments, and upgrades at company's repair yards worldwide.

SeaDream Innovation has a large battery pack (approx 4 MWh) that enables zero-emissions and silent cruising for up to 3 hours - with no disturbance to wildlife. The hybrid system supports the diesel generators in "peak shaving mode" (reducing energy consumption during peak demand periods), thus reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The technology allows the mega-yacht to visit the world's most sensitive marine and coastal areas. Ship's batteries also bring more safety providing "spinning reserve" (extra power available by increasing diesel generators' output). If the main engines shut down, the system switches to batteries without any power/propulsion loss.

Vessel's "Organic Rankine Cycle" (ORC) machine takes waste heat from the engines and converts it to electricity. This produces up to 150 kW of additional electrical power - which otherwise is just wasted energy. This technology also reduces fuel consumption and lowers emissions. Developed in the late-1950s, the ORC technology uses organic fluid with a liquid-vapor/boiling point at lower temperatures than the water-steam point. The fluid allows heat recovery from lower temperature sources (like biomass combustion and industrial waste heat).

Depending on cruise port, SeaDream Innovation can receive shoreside electrical power supply (via multi-voltage cable connection) to reduce in-port pollution. The mega-yacht is powered by 4x marine diesel engines and has an SCR system (Selective Catalytic Reduction) reducing NOx (nitrous oxide) emissions. The engines also meet MARPOL Tier III limits. Vessel's propulsion system is based on two electric podded propulsors providing highest maneuverability and efficiency. Hull's ice-class is PC6 (highest for a passenger ship).

In mid-May 2019, the shipowner announced it had received a grant for USD 1,8 million for the Innovation shipbuilding project. The grant was from Enova SF - a Norwegian government enterprise owned by Norway's Ministry of Climate and Environment. The organization promotes environmentally-friendly productions and energy consumption.

In June 2019, the shipbuilder Damen contracted ALMACO Group to supply (deliver and install as pre-fabricated modules) all the liner's 114 passenger- plus 110 crew cabins, hallways/corridors and crew-only areas (including galleys/kitchens, provision rooms, laundries) plus galley equipment.

In September 2019, the Norwegian company Kongsberg Maritime (vessel's designer) won its first full-scope cruise ship tender. The deal included the supply and installation of vessel's powerplant and propulsion system (ELegance pod thrusters, Bergen marine diesel engines), also its stabilizers, Navigation Bridge, automation systems, electrical-navigation package.
