Texas Cavaliers River Parade

There’s nothing quite like the Texas Cavaliers River Parade. Festive music fills the air and vibrant floats pass by as guests watch from the banks of the San Antonio River.

This one-of-a-kind parade started in 1941 after a group of Texas Cavaliers witnessed boats and barges decorated with flowers in the “floating gardens” of Mexico City. This coincided with the San Antonio River bend restoration, and the Texas Cavaliers decided to bring this unique experience to our city.

Eighty years later, the Texas Cavaliers River Parade has found its way into the hearts of over 250,000 spectators each year, and all money raised supports local children’s charities. This year's River Parade takes place on Monday, April 22 along the San Antonio Riverwalk, and the Alamo is honored to have a float dedicated to Texas History.

Event Information

Thousands gathered along the banks of the San Antonio River on Monday night to watch the Texas Cavaliers River Parade.

The first parade of this year’s Fiesta celebration started with a bang as thousands of spectators flocked to the River Walk on Monday night to watch brightly lit barges float down the San Antonio River.

The Texas Cavaliers River Parade was the only major parade that happened in 2021 because of the pandemic. This year, for its 77th annual run, the parade’s theme was “Texas Alfresco.” Live announcers from the Arneson River Theatre also made their return.

King Antonio XCIX, Barton Tinsley Simpson, made his entrance at the theater in dramatic fashion. There were fireworks, confetti and several screams from the crowd as he disembarked from his barge and made his way through the crowds, high-fiving everyone along the way.

Simpson hyped the crowd with his opening remarks, yelling, “Viva Fiesta” multiple times, which spectators enthusiastically repeated.

Before becoming King Antonio, Simpson served as the river parade marshal in 2017 and is former commander of the organization. Currently, Simpson is a board member of the Texas Cavaliers, trustee of the Cavaliers’ Charitable Foundation and treasurer of the Warm Springs Foundation.

Following Simpson’s appearance, country singer Randy Rogers, who was selected as grand marshal for the parade, briefly serenaded the crowd gathered around the theater.

The more than 50 barges that took part in the parade were colorful, vibrant and lit up the river.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg and City Council members were among the parade participants, as well as the San Antonio Zulu Association and the German Club. Bumper boats also debuted at this year’s parade, to the delight of the crowd.

Sofia Licega, a fifth grader at Bob Lewis Elementary, got to ride on a float in the parade as winner of the Margaret Castillas Grand Prize Artist Award. Licega’s artwork won this year’s children’s art contest, and as a result, her art was featured on the cover of the parade’s program.

Among the spectators at the parade was Britt Kleberg, the sister of King Antonio XCIX.

“I’ve never seen anything more exciting, effervescent and infectious,” said Kleberg. “Everyone was so ready.”

After shutdowns that happened during peaks of the pandemic, Kleberg said Monday night’s event showed San Antonio’s spirit.

“We have to be together. It really is such a wonderful feeling,” she said.

Kleberg, 53, said she has attended every parade since she was 7 years old. Her favorite part, she said, is the coming together of people from different backgrounds to celebrate.

Thousands of families and groups gathered in reserved seating with prices ranging from $18 to $28 to watch the parade.

The Cavaliers had aimed to sell 17,000 tickets in advance. As part of their greater mission, the parade helps the organization raise money for childrens’ charities and organizations in San Antonio.

Two more Fiesta parades are scheduled to make their grand returns on a new route this weekend. The Battle of Flowers Parade takes to the streets Friday and the Flambeau Parade lights up the night Saturday after a pause in 2020 and smaller celebrations in 2021.

It is highly recommended that you plan at least 3 weeks in advance before your event. More time may be needed during the busy season.

The best time to for a boat to is usually from sunrise to mid-morning, but you’ll need to check the weather conditions to make sure that it’s safe. Swimming is not allowed in the San Antonio River Walk due to safety regulations – so stick to walking and boat rides for your explorations! Beer is allowed in certain parts of the River Walk, but it’s important to be mindful of local laws and regulations.

Unfortunately, swimming in the River Walk is not allowed. Although the water is relatively shallow and safe, it is full of plants and debris which can make swimming dangerous. Additionally, many of the pathways around the River Walk are filled with people and can be too crowded for swimming.

san antonio riverboat parade

Drinking alcohol while walking around the Riverwalk is also not allowed, however, some restaurants and bars will provide special plastic cups that allow you to enjoy your beverage while you explore the area. It’s important to follow the laws though – drinking alcohol openly on the Riverwalk can lead to serious fines or even jail time.

The River Walk is open from 8 am until midnight, with certain areas staying open until 2 am at certain times of the year. The depth of the water varies along the length of the River Walk but generally ranges from about 2 feet to 6 feet deep.

It is generally safe to visit the River Walk at night, as there is a strong police presence in the area and it is well lit. However, visitors should always keep an eye out for their personal safety and belongings, even during daylight hours.

When it comes to finding the best part of the San Antonio Riverwalk, everyone has their own opinion! Many enjoy visiting the historical sites within walking distance such as the Alamo and other nearby attractions, while others love simply taking in all of the incredible sights along the walk itself.

The San Antonio Riverwalk is famous because of its beauty and charm. This two-mile stretch of winding pathways offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore natural scenery while enjoying access to some of the best shopping and dining in the city.

People very rarely fall into the River Walk – however, it does happen occasionally! Most likely this happens due to someone tripping over something or not paying attention to where they were going.

The main thing that makes the San Antonio Riverwalk special is its combination of natural beauty and bustling city life. You can experience both at any time of day or night and get a sense of why San Antonio is so beloved by locals and tourists alike.

The Alamo is located approximately one mile from River Walk and can easily be reached by foot if you choose to do so. San Antonio is known for its vibrant culture, diverse population, delicious food, and unique architectural design.

The River Walk typically shuts down around midnight each night. During peak holiday seasons such as Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Fourth of July, and Memorial Day weekend this could extend later into the night. It’s best to check ahead when possible.

When choosing what to wear to the San Antonio Riverwalk, it’s important to wear comfortable clothes that will keep you cool in the heat. Lightweight shorts and t-shirts are usually best. Additionally, you should bring a hat or sunglasses to protect yourself from too much sun exposure.

Floats down the river tend to cost around $20 per person for trips lasting around an hour. Prices may vary depending on your location.

The San Antonio Riverwalk occasionally gets drained for cleaning or repairs. This typically happens once every three years and allows workers to assess any potential problems more closely.

2 major, free events planned for downtown San Antonio this weekend. Plan ahead for traffic, construction

Keep up with the latest forecast from the ksat weather authority.

Rebecca Salinas , Digital Journalist

RJ Marquez , Traffic Anchor/Reporter

SAN ANTONIO – The streets of downtown San Antonio are expected to be busy this weekend due to major events and ongoing construction.

Two big, free festivals are taking place Saturday and Sunday — the Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair at Hemisfair’s new Civic Park and the Bud Light St. Patrick’s Festival across the street at La Villita.

Two St. Patrick’s Day river parades are also scheduled for Saturday, and the Dyeing of the River Green is scheduled three times over the weekend.

All the events are free, family-friendly and open to the public, meaning thousands of people are expected to head downtown for their end-of-spring-break fun.

With that in mind, we’ve compiled a quick guide for navigating downtown traffic this weekend, starting with construction.

Construction downtown

Drivers and pedestrians can expect detours and closures along South Alamo Street near Hemisfair and La Villita.

Alamo Street is open to northbound and southbound traffic in that area, but there are lane closures as the strip from East Market Street to East Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard is being reconstructed.

It is one of several projects in the area: Construction is ongoing at The Monarch at Civic Park and Kimpton Santo along Arciniega Street .

Cesar E. Chavez is open to eastbound and westbound traffic at its intersection with Alamo Street, but the road is open to one lane in each direction.

Street and sidewalk closures may also be encountered near Alamo Plaza and on Broadway, Commerce and Santa Rosa streets.

See below for a full list of downtown closures according to the city’s Public Works Department.

City-owned parking garages

City officials often ask downtown visitors to use a ride share, or walk or bike to prevent traffic during major events. If you are driving, here are some city-owned parking garages in the area:

  • Houston Street Garage at 111 College St.
  • Convention Center Garage at 850 E. Commerce St.
  • Martinez Lot at South Alamo and Martinez streets.
  • Houston/Nolan Lot at E. Houston and Elm streets.
  • City Tower Garage at 100 N. Main Ave.
  • St. Mary’s Garage at 205 E. Travis St.

Click here for a list of other parking garages.

After the possibility of hail on Friday afternoon, the potential for much-needed rain will continue through the weekend.

A small severe threat is forecast for Saturday and Sunday, according to KSAT meteorologists. As a precaution, at least one big event — the Fest of Tails at McAllister Park — has already been postponed .

As of 10:20 a.m. Friday, neither the Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair or St. Patrick’s Day festivities have been canceled or postponed.

Keep up with the latest forecasts, radar and alerts on the KSAT Weather Authority page . You can also download KSAT’s weather app for customized, accurate forecasts in San Antonio, South Texas or wherever you are.

Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair

“The biggest weekend in Tejano music ” started on Thursday and continues through Sunday. It will include live music from more than 150 Tejano and conjunto artists across four stages.

Some of the artists include Jennifer Pena, Siggno, Stefani Montiel, Destiny Navaira, Asalto, Lucky Joe, Monica Saldivar, Conjunto Cats, Sunny Sauceda y Todo Eso, Gary Hobbs and more. Click here for a full schedule.

The family-friendly event is free and open to the public, and lawn chairs will be allowed.

The stages will be set near the Magik Theatre, the Tower of the Americas walkway, the Mexican Cultural Institute, and the new Civic Park.

The festival opens at noon and ends at 11:30 p.m.

St. Paddy’s Day festivities

Downtown San Antonio is gearing up for St. Patrick’s Day.

Visit San Antonio says the River Walk will be dyed green on Saturday and Sunday for the annual tradition.

The Dyeing of the River Green, sponsored by MadDogs, will take place on Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon along Museum Reach and 1-3 p.m. along the downtown stretch of the river. Also, on St. Patrick’s Day, the downtown portion of the river will be dyed again from 1-3 p.m.

The river has been dyed green, and jokingly renamed the River Shannon, every year since 1968.

The Bud Light St. Patrick’s Festival will take place at the Arneson River Theatre and La Villita from 1-6 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. It’s free to attend and family-friendly.

On Saturday, there will also be a St. Patrick’s Day river parade from 2-3 p.m. along the Museum Reach and 5-6 p.m. along downtown. Both parades are free to attend.

Click here for more information. People can also monitor the River Walk website and social media for schedule changes and weather updates.

Infused with tradition and history, the Battle of Flowers parade gives the city of San Antonio a reason to celebrate. The school kids get the day off to enjoy the fun. This is one of the Top Things to do at Fiesta in San Antonio.

First, catch the Battle of the Flowers Parade, the largest parade organized entirely by volunteers. Since 1891, ladies dressed in yellow have directed the spectators to their reserved seats for the second-largest day parade in the country.

During our visit, we secured reserved seating in the shadow of the Alamo. The Battle of Flowers Parade kicks off with a band. Military, university, and local high school bands all march. The bedazzled members of the Fiesta Court, dressed in historic sequined costumes and wearing elaborate flowered floats, enchanted the tiniest girls. Giant helium balloons and drill teams also made an appearance in the parade.

Tradition is king at Fiesta, and extended families sit in the same spots every year to make a day of it with elaborate parade-side picnics. Food vendors provide everything from traditional Tex-Mex favorites to carnival classics.

The parade starts at 9:30 a.m., and the route proceeds down Broadway and E. Grayson. Advance reserved seating is available.

Date: Saturday, April 27, 2024

Next, San Antonio pops a million glow sticks for the Fiesta Flambeau Parade, the largest illuminated night parade in the country. 700,000 people will be along the sideline, and another 1.5 million will watch on TV.

It is a lively parade that’s similar in style and length to the Battle of Flowers Parade but does not have the same participants. Fiesta San Antonio is a family affair, though younger kids might get cranky by the end. This is also one of the Top Things to do at Fiesta in San Antonio.

The parade starts at 7:00 p.m. and lasts until 10:00 p.m., the route proceeds down Broadway and E. Grayson. Advance reserved seating is available.

More family fun in san antonio.

While in San Antonio tour the Alamo. Built in 1718 by Spanish missionaries, the Texas Revolution escalated, and the Alamo became the center of the conflict. In 1836, after a nearly two-week-long siege, the Battle of the Alamo broke out between William B. Travis, commander of the Alamo and General Santa Anna and the Mexican troops.

Though the Alamo defenders died in the battle, the legend lives on. In 2015, the United Nations designated the Alamo and the remaining four San Antonio Missions as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

After the parades, some history and a couple of tacos, the kids need to play. So head to the Yanaguana Garden, named after the Payaya Indians. There, families will find a crazy fun climbing structure, a sandscape, a splash pad and a public art area with changing rooms and restrooms located in HemisFair Park.

Where to eat on the san antonio riverwalk.

Since 1946 Casa Rio has been serving steaming plates of enchiladas, and it’s the original Tex-Mex restaurant on the Riverwalk. Be sure and grab a table next to Riverwalk to share a plate of nachos and sip on a margarita as the riverboats float by.

Got a picky eater? Try a bean and cheese taco, my boys love them.

It is located at 430 E. Commerce St.

Where to Stay

Getting around downtown san antonio.

Most major airlines service the San Antonio International Airport, which is 10 miles north of Downtown San Antonio. Cab service or public transportation is available at the airport.

Love to Ride? Try out San Antonio’s B Cycle, a bike-sharing program. The cycles are rented by the hour after a small fee and bike from one attraction to the next.

Via Streetcar, operated by San Antonio’s public transportation system VIA, offers several color-colored routes to popular tourist destinations like El Mercado and the King William District. My kids love riding the streetcars and a $4 day pass offers an easy way to get around downtown on the cheap.

Know Before You Go:

  • Downtown hotels charge for parking, some offer self-parking.
  • The Alamo is especially hallowed ground for Texans. Please remove your hats, and photos are prohibited inside the mission’s main building.
  • With the majority of attractions located within walking distance, walk or take public transportation instead of driving since parking is limited during busy events.
  • The Alamo doesn’t have designated parking though a parking lot is nearby.
  • Arrive early for the Fiesta Parades before the streets close to vehicle traffic.
  • Reserved seats for the parades sell out.
