Whats the best 26\' drop keel? Looking with interest at 26' trailer sailers. So far the top two within sensible budgets are the Seal 26 & the Evolution 26. Anyone here sugest any others or give me the pros and cons of the above please? Dave

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? Rushed in here to say "Super Seal"... but you've figured it out already. I thought about one for a while, seems they have a v.good reputation as a fast cruiser.

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? Hi Aidan. Yes I like the SS and have looked at a few of the members boats in the 'Seal Sailing Association'. I know of a Evolution 26 that keeps comming first in its class at Canvey, in fact it canes everything including a Super Seal! Regards......Dave

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? Dave, you mean the Evo 25 (12k). The Evo 26 (10k) is a racer with restricted headroom, minimal interior, outboard motor, 750kg (!) less ballast. Same hull, and lift keel (hydraulic) different deck. Good sailing caravan, once slept 11 on mine. Evo 26 also has taller rig, both fractional. Wasn't a particulalrly good CHS rating, don't know since then. You might want to look at the Beneteau First 25(12-13k) too and the Jouet 760 (12-15k) or the particularly well regarded Jeanneau Fantasia 27 (17-19k). Thought the Hunter Delta 25 (10k) and the Dehler 25 (10k) (both good sailers) were cramped. Jaguar 25 (7-9k) lacks headroom and are not fast, but they are cheapish, a lot homebuilt. All of them are a lot of boat to lug about and launch/recover though. Couldn't recommend it. How about a Seal 22 on the water in pristine condition? Luvverly-jubberly..... Jim

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? Jim i seem 2 remember that the Dehler 25 comes with a be-spoke trailor that launches the boat

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? Hi Jim.....Yes I think it could be the Evo 25 then which is the boat stuffing everyone at the I.Y.C. I think the next time we speak on the phone I shall bend your ears a bit on what one you think the best! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif As for my boat .......she's has about two months left I feel! Regards ........ Dave

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? Doe's the Dehler have water ballast tanks Roger?

  • 24 May 2005

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? You have all missed out the best of the lot. Trapper TS 240. Best bargain of the bunch. Very unfairly handicapped though. Has outboard in well. Make sure the keel is sorted. Have a look at the test in PBO 383 Nov '98 "Evolution harder to sail" "Etap much heavier" I must admit Seal's are well thought of but their ballast is too high compared with the Trapper See the Trail Sail Club for their opinions Regards Briani

StugeronSteve

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? The Dehler does have a very efficient water ballast system, a bespoke trailer with launch trolley and a mast raising/lowering system that is simplicity in itself. I can confirm that the D25 is a good sailing boat and, provided that you take the outboard and rudder off the back, very well behaved on the trailer (will tow at a steady 55mph behind a Ford Galaxy). Bit cramped on headroom, but a really nice boat.

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? What about a Tripp 26? I remember reading a report in one of the comics a few years ago and it sounded good. No idea of cost.

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? As a new super seal 26 owner - I must say that I am impressed so far - She is quick, polite and reasonably roomy for a 26 footer. The seal Association are also very helpful. They produce a very good booklet on the 26 with all sorts upgrades, issues and specs in. I looked at a evolution 26 - it has a keel that would not retract - had a large 'torpedo' on the bottom - I am not sure if this is standard, but I needed to take to the ground level, so it was a killer for me. I looked at several others but kept comming back to the seal. Good luck with your search - there are several for sale on the seals web site.

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? Pisces, the Evo 25/26 standard does not have a bulbe, it is a straight up and downer!

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? I though it looked like an add on!

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? I believe Pisces is right. There was a contempory of these boats with an "add on", I remember reading a report saying it added nearly a foot to the draft (queried by another). This does not say a lot for the stability of the boat does it? Regards Briani

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? Briani, totally agree as I said in an earlier post on this thread, the Evo 26 has 750kg less ballast and a taller rig. It therefore goes like hot snot in light puffs, but soon needs reefing and is tender. When answering Daves original qustion for a Cruiser I listed the 26... and why I can recommend the (much heavier) Evo 25, as I had one for 7 years. Be sure it hasnt still got the 'orrible BMW D6 donk in it. Mine was called Chou Fleur III (sail number 119 in Beige/Orange), and caused much merriment to the natives when berthed in Calais! To think, the original owner had alsready had two previous boats with the same moniker! Julian Everitt certainly didnt conceive it to have another foot on the keel! Jim

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? Right, and ,as I recall, J E designed the E Boat, which behaves like a dinghy, that is, been known to lean too far! Regards Briani

Re: Whats the best 26\' drop keel? Thanks for your post Brian, never thought that the Trapper was a lift or swing keel otherwise I would have been reading up on it! Regards........Dave

Regards......Dave [/ QUOTE ] Yes, Gerry does do very well with Aires doesn't he? But he doesn't cane Tiptoe that often ... Such as last weekend's Upnor race when he ended up retiring, but I managed to finish (though in last place, but there's an extremely good reason for that). Or in 2003, when after a long beat from the Spile to Upnor I finished a mere 20 minutes after him to take 1st overall .... (and they say bilge keelers don't go to windward!). But the Evolution 26 seems a really fine boat. Regards Mike 'Tiptoe' - Ballerina II

I don't know much more than that the Evolution was designed as a quarter ton (IIRC) racer/cruiser. I think only a few were built. One, "Absolution", was mis-rated (measurer's mistake) and dominated Solent racing about '81, winning against the flat-out racing quarters. She actually performed quite well even when allowing for the incorrect rating IIRC. If you have access to a library of Seahorse mags back to about '81 you'll find a season summary from Absolution's skipper in the "Coastal round up" they did each year. There was also a report in Seahorse about the measurement error and that may have some comments about the boat, from memory. EDIT; I happened to find my old Seahorse binders. Absolution won Solent Points in her class for two years, so both '80 and '81 Seahorses had reports (about 600+ words) from the skipper. He had some quite detailed info about sheeting angles, sail selection etc BUT (big "but") apparently Absolution was modified from the standard masthead rig to a fractional rig and therefore all that stuff would be of little use to you. If yours is a fractional, post and I may be able to copy out some of his info.
mine is a mast head rig and it weighs just over 2 ton

I have owned an Evolution 26 ("GrumpyGorilla" ) for 10years and race it on the Solent, normally Thursday evening racing around the cans at Royal Lymington Yacht Club. They were originally built at Christchurch (5 miles away) . We have 2 fractional rig 26's ( including "Absolution") ,2 masthead 26's and 1 fractional Evolution 25. The 25 has the same hull as the 26 but a different coachroof allowing more headroom down below. There were various combinations of rigs ,normal masthead, fractional ,whereby the mast was moved 8inches forward of the original step , and an odd-ball fractional rig that was 30inches taller than the standard fractional rig. Apparently , this was popular in places like Poole harbour ,where quite a number of them can be found, where the wind is more "flukey" because of the number is islands. "Absolution" still outstrips any of the other Evolutions and often bigger boats in other classes. I think it was 2000 when she came 18th overall in the "Round the Island Race", not bad out of 1800 boats racing. Christchurch has a larger fleet, as does Poole, and they often have match racing against each other. We are trying to get Lymington involved in this as well. Normally, the fractional rigs go better upwind but the masthead, with bigger spinnakers, reverse the trend downwind. I have got the original Sales "blurb" and will copy it for you. Also Practical Boat Owner did a report November 1981 P55 by Rodger Witt ( you can buy copies from PBO for £3.50) - Interesting reading. Anything specific you need to know , I'll try and answer. regards

ive seen the pbo report. ours is goes well up wind and point very well. we are not used to masthead rigging and our looking to find out about setting the rigging in terms of rake in the mast. is there any way you could put me in touch with an owner of a masthead 26 thanks

This is the cruising version of the Julian Everitt-designed Evolution 26 quarter-tonner, from the early 1980s. With her hydraulically operated, 800lb (364kg) lifting keel and powerful fractional rig, she has plenty of performance and handles like a big dinghy. The Evolution 25’s coachroof is higher than her racing sister’s and the accommodation is more spacious and better fitted out. She can sleep five, has a separate heads compartment and a practical galley area. She draws just a foot (31cm) with the keel up, so she is a flexible coastal and estuary cruiser. Build quality was not brilliant and many were home completed, so the arrangements below decks and the quality of fit-out will vary.

LoA 7.9m (25ft 9in) LWL 6.8m (22ft 4in) beam 2.8m (9ft 4in) Draught 0.3m to 1.5m (1ft to 5ft) Displacement 1,632kg (4,500lb)

Painesville announces summer 2024 concert lineup

Mar. 5—Painesville's Concerts in the Park will return this summer with new dining options and a mix of new and returning acts.

The 2024 concert series will kick off on June 5 at Painesville Square, and concerts are scheduled for every Wednesday night in June and July except July 17. Each concert is set to run from 6 to 8 p.m.

City Recreation Supervisor Justin Gollin said that the free, family-friendly concerts let people enjoy the outdoors and support local musicians.

"New to the Painesville concert series we will have food trucks that will offer more of a meal and a dessert such as FATS on the Go, Moose's Tornado Potatoes, Barra de Taco, Delish and Chef T BBQ along with Pelican Snoballs and Froyo," he added.

The city provided the following schedule and descriptions in a recent Facebook post:

—June 5: Vinyl Arcade ('70s and '80s jukebox classics")

—June 12: Revolution Pie ("Beatles tribute")

—June 19: Blue Evolution ("British invasion of the '60s and '70s")

—June 26: Carlos Jones and the Plus Band ("roots reggae")

—July 3: Country Redford ("modern country")

—July 10: The Swamp Rattlers ("classic rock and blues")

—July 24: Ricky and the Rockets ("classic rock")

—July 31: Erin Nicole Centric Soul ("soul/R&B")

Gollin said that Carlos Jones, Blue Evolution, Ricky and the Rockets and Revolution Pie will make their first appearance at the concert series this year.

"We accept submissions from bands all winter," he added. "The Recreation Department listens to and watches all videos from bands. We check websites of Cleveland area music venues and also listen to suggestions from our concert goers. The bands are selected based on musical ability, budget and calendar availability. We look for a good mix of genres."

Gollin said that visitors can bring dogs if they use leashes and clean up after the pets.

He added that visitors can check the city's Facebook page for updates, including potential cancelations.

"We are thankful that our shows have been attracting fans from all around Lake County," Gollin said. "Painesville is a great place to be at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays nights."

More live music acts will come to downtown Painesville from July 19-21 for the Painesville Community Improvement Corporation's annual Party in the Park. PCIC describes the event as "Ohio's largest free music festival."

As of Feb. 29, PCIC's website listed folk-rock group Alex Bevan and Friends, beach country group Nick Walker Band and Latino band Grupo Fuego as confirmed acts for Party in the Park 2024.

Evolution 25

Evolution 25 is a 25 ′ 9 ″ / 7.9 m monohull sailboat designed by Julian Everitt and built by Evolution Yachts Ltd. between 1980 and 1984.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
