9 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘Victorious,’ a 252-Foot Superyacht With Its Own Fireplace and Indoor Pool

Superyacht Explorer Victorious

Victorious might look shiny-new, tied to her superyacht dock at this week’s Miami International Boat Show. But it took more the 18 years to get here.

Rewind to 2006. The steel-and-aluminum shell of a 252-foot explorer yacht is sitting in a shipyard in Santiago, Chile, with no money to complete. Kiwi serial yacht owner and billionaire Graeme Hart puts in an offer, and has the yacht towed to his native New Zealand for completion.

After two years of work, Hart switches his attention to his new superyacht project, the 380-foot Kleven-built explorer called Ulysses . Eight years later, he sells the yacht in 2016 to Turkish entrepreneur Vural Ak. After having the yacht towed to Istanbul, Ak he creates a shipyard, appropriately called AKYacht. The yard extends the hull’s length 18 feet and creates a beautiful interior. Victorious is finally completed in 2021. The following year it receives a “2022 Robb Report Best of the Best” award.

After three years of circling the globe, Victorious is now looking for a new owner, with an asking price of $129 million.

37,000 Nautical Miles Without Starting an Engine

yacht with indoor pool

Part of the remarkable story about Victorious was that, before its completion in 2021, it was towed a total of 37,000 miles, from Chile to New Zealand, then New Zealand to Istanbul, Turkey. Starting life as the 252-foot Gin Tonic II at the Marco Yachts yard in Santiago, the bare-bones vessel was bought by New Zealand billionaire Graeme Hart in 2011. The empty hull was then towed, along with 100 containers of parts, across the Southern Ocean to Auckland. After on-again, off-again work, the yacht was sold to Vural Ak in 2016, who had her towed back to Turkey.

Built for a Sportscar Enthusiast

yacht with indoor pool

The checkered-flag burgee on Victorious ‘s bow gives a hint as to the interests of its high-profile owner, Turkish billionaire Vural Ak. The founder of Turkey’s biggest rental-car firm, Intercity, is said to have an eclectic collection of over 300 vehicles, including an array of Porsches, Lamborghinis, and even tractors. He has raced in the GT3 series across Europe and competed in the grueling Dakar Rally. Ak also loves F1, so he owns the Intercity Istanbul Park racetrack in Turkey, which plays host to the Turkish Formula 1 Grand Prix. When Victorious debuted at the Monaco boat show in 2021, Ak parked a new Bentley Continental GT on the helipad.

The Yacht Can Travel 24,000 Miles on a Single Tank

yacht with indoor pool

Victorious is powered by a pair of industrial-grade Caterpillar 3512B 12-cylinder turbocharged diesels packing 1,475 hp apiece. These can push the superyacht to a top speed of 17 knots, though it’s designed more for comfort than speed. At a 13-knot cruising pace, the yacht has a range of 14,000 nautical miles. But throttle back to an ocean-crossing seven knots and it will cover a staggering 24,000 nautical miles with 70,000-gallon fuel tanks. So filling up at $4-a-gallon would cost $280,000.

Space for a Very Large Family

yacht with indoor pool

For its role as a globe-trotting family yacht, Victorious has space to spare. The 12 cabins create space for 24 guests, with the owner enjoying the vast, full-beam master suite on the bridge deck facing aft or the equally spacious VIP suite on the main deck. For fun at sea, the boat has a 10-seat, tiered, sound-proofed cinema, a playroom for the kids, an observation lounge with full-size grand piano, and a formal dining room for 14.

All the Toys

yacht with indoor pool

The biggest “toy” on board is a 42-foot custom-built, all-aluminum limousine catamaran, designed by Britain’s H2 Design, with a special drop-down section on the bow for beach landings. It’s powered by twin 480 hp Cummins diesels and sits on the superyacht’s huge back deck and is launched by a 6.7-ton-capacity crane. For fishing adventures, a 38-foot Fountain center console with twin 300-horse outboards does the trick, and when the kids want to go water skiing, the crew will fire up the rugged 25-foot Nordkapp Airborne 8 RIB. Add to these three Sea-Doo GTX 230 jet bikes, four Seabob F5s, two electric Fliteboard foilers, and a pair of Radinn electric jetsurfs.

Going off the Grid

yacht with indoor pool

Come the Apocalypse, Victorious can go off the grid and be totally self-sufficient for up to six months. With full water tanks, it carries 33,655 gallons of water, supplemented by watermakers that can churn out 13,000 gallons a day. For internal power, there are no fewer than five generators, including two 465kW Caterpillar C18-powered units, and to keep the food frosty, there are 18 fridges, freezers, and ice makers. For the Dom Pérignon, there are two EuroCave 200-bottle chillers. Add to these seven Miele washing machines, six dryers, and five dishwashers. And if anyone gets sick, there’s an onboard hospital.

A Day at the Beach

yacht with indoor pool

No need to head to the real beach when Victorious ‘ lower-deck beach club spans 2,153 square feet. It features an indoor pool open to the stern deck that can be filled with either fresh or salt water, with a counter-current for exercising. Steps away is the yacht’s wellness center with a massage room, a beauty salon, a spa and a hamman steam room. The fitness room comes with the latest Technogym equipment. For perfecting your best Greg Louganis dives, there are oversized fold-down terraces at sea level on both port and starboard.

Top Deck Gentleman’s Club

yacht with indoor pool

Step into the somewhat risque-sounding Gentleman’s Club on the top deck, and one of the highlights is a stunning, wood-burning marble fireplace, fed by more than two tons of logs the yacht carries onboard. Installing traditional fireplaces on a yacht is a challenge at best, so a separate air conditioning and air-filtration system was installed, along with smoke-resistant upholstery. There is also a cigar bar with an aft terrace to enjoy that stogie under the stars, plus a wine cellar and humidor. Perhaps the pièces de résistance are the massive, ’30s concert-hall-style, floor-to-ceiling speakers on either side of the fireplace, for blasting out tunes.

It Rescued Capsized Sailors in the Caribbean

yacht with indoor pool

Back in December 2022, the explorer was on a transatlantic crossing from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean island of Saint Martin when it intercepted a distress signal from the five-man crew of a capsized 50-foot catamaran. Petar Milkov, Victorious ‘s captain, responded by changing course and starting a search pattern. After 15 hours of crisscrossing, and at 11.30 p.m., his crew spotted a speck of light on the horizon. The sailors, most badly injured in their inflatable raft, were able to fire off a distress flare, allowing Victorious to pinpoint their position. Early in the morning, the sailors were pulled aboard and the yacht rushed to Saint Martin for medical assistance.

“LUMINOSITY” THE HYBRID GIGA YACHT

yacht with indoor pool

BENETTI INTRODUCES FB272 M/Y “LUMINOSITY”, THE HYBRID GIGA YACHT THAT REDEFINES OCEAN-BASED LEISURE

Palace of glass

Benetti FB272 M/Y “Luminosity” is a moving palace of glass with unparalleled views of every changing landscape. The Giga yacht spectacular exterior design exterior design is a collaboration between Zaniz Jakubowski, Andrew Langton and Giorgio M. Cassetta, while her interiors are entirely the work of Zaniz Jakubowski.

With over 800 square meters of exterior glass wrapping around the main decks, “ Luminosity ” has become a record breaker for Benetti . 3-meter-high windows are entirely uninterrupted by structure, giving a floating appearance. A straight bow offers brilliant seakeeping credentials, while a huge forward deck area brings guests a thrilling vantage point from which to cruise and relax. From here, the main deck is a step lower, offering further dining and social spaces, sheltered and shaded by the graceful overhang of the beautifully styled superstructure. Above this is the wheelhouse and above again is a secluded, private deck leading towards the certified helipad capable of accepting a Bell 429 helicopter. It’s worth noting the space and flexibility of this deck currently set up to accommodate two cars including a Rolls Royce Phantom , as well as a 24’ sailboat and two motor bikes. At the stern of the yacht, the individual decks step up in perfectly balanced overhangs, each one offering a different configuration of seating and relaxation areas.

Cutting-edge technology

The Generation/Propulsion Package is obtained by six generators of approximately 1,000 KW each. The electricity produced by those generators is managed electronically, by a sophisticated fully integrated power management system, to feed the consumption of the services on board and the electric motors of two Azipods of 2,200 KW each. The spare electricity is also used to charge 36 tons of batteries which are sufficient to run the vessel for 12 hours without generator power – a huge convenience when at anchor with no shore power.

This propulsion package is the state-of-the-art of technology today, made by top names such as Caterpillar , Seastema, ABB, under the coordination of Benetti Technical Department. The advantage of this system is a vibration-free navigation in total silence: with such stable and soundless cruising, guests might hardly realize they are underway.

The air conditioning system and chiller units – which is supplied by H&H – are one of the biggest ever installed inside a yacht of this size with a total cooling capacity of approximately 3,000 KW. The yacht is equipped with a waste heat recovery system that is capable to feed the yacht and save electrical power in line with the latest green environment requirements.

“Luminosity” also features an advanced Lutron domotics system with approximately 500 kilometres of cable run across her hull and superstructure.

Symphony of light

The defining characteristic of FB272’s interiors are the huge 3-meter-high windows flooding spaces with light and providing a seamless connection with the outside world. A magnificent skylight at Sun Deck level fills the yacht with a longitudinal axis of light, cascading down the 18-meter staircase that passes through five of the yacht’s 6 decks, its polished steel and toughened glass giving the structure a sculptural yet floating appearance. Within the sumptuously proportioned interior, an incredible variety of glazed surfaces creates a constant impression of shifting light, which enters the yacht from all angles. The materials and colors used in fabric, furnishings and fittings offer a continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces. On the Bridge Deck, a VIP Stateroom and lounge stretches out onto a spacious aft deck harmoniously connecting through 9-meter-wide sliding windows. Clad in Malachite green paired with Lapis Lazuli blue and Belgian black marbles, this cabin has its own chic identity illuminated by a 3-meter-wide white onyx moon.

The Owner’s Deck, one below the bridge deck, encapsulated in the 3-meter high windows, so iconic in this yacht, is defined by ever-changing views. Down a corridor decorated by ten different types of marble, the stateroom itself is punctuated by granite details, with the Owner’s bed able to lift electrically by 80cm enabling an opportune position for the views. Behind the headboard, what appears as another splendid view is in fact a virtual window, channeling the wonderful sights that are visible from the bow of the yacht through a hidden camera. A vast walk-in wardrobe leads to a private massage room, and an ensuite bathroom. This deck hosts 3 further guest staterooms and a private study for the Owner with ensuite bathroom and a separate office for a PA.

A spacious and inviting lounge area on the Main Deck seduces guests with its unique design elements all conceived to enhance guest relaxation. Beyond this are 3 exquisite staterooms, each one differing in its design and materials. Gold leaf riffs with brushed cement, while onyx and ceramic carved by water jets combine in a virtuoso feat of elaborate design. Further forward a large galley fitted with state-of-the-art equipment is befitting for the demands of the world’s top chefs.

Also on this deck, towards the bow, is the enormous tender bay designed to accommodate custom built tenders and toys, including a 40’ Limousine Tender, a 40’ Landing craft, and an additional 40’ luxury tender – all custom built for the yacht.

On the Lower Deck, a glorious lobby leads to the stairwell and elevator, beyond which are 4 sumptuous guest staterooms. Spending much of their time on this deck, guests will enjoy the yacht’s in-house spa and private luxury health club, complete with elegant sauna and Turkish bath. With shell doors open, the spa space and fully equipped gymnasium sits right on the water with guests refreshed by the breeze. On this deck, the jaw-dropping 30-meter-square swimming pool is a delight for guests, further surprising them with its transformation into a dance floor by raising the level of the pool bottom. With plenty of bar space and ample social seating groups, this entertainment area will be the envy of all who cast eyes on it.

The Crew Quarters can accommodatea crew of 37 along with their own galley and large mess. Built to Passenger Yacht Code (PYC) Classification, it is a point of pride for Benetti that the shipyard can create such spacious accommodation for the hardworking crew with comfortable cabins and large berths. To further ensure safety on board, Benetti designers had to divide the entire crew quarters into vertical sections and ensure that each one had a dedicated staircase for emergency escape.

Natural connection

Another truly unique and visually dazzling aspect of “Luminosity” are the visual artworks that bring the natural rhythms and energy of the organic world into the heart of the yacht’s interior. One such feat is the visual panel of 370-sq meters that stretches along the height of the main lobby stairwell. Depicting a moving forest, these images gently sway as guests pass, bringing a dynamic and unexpected vibrancy to the space. More interactive technology in the main lounge area comes in the form of 264 white magnolia flowers sculpted in Corian resin on the aft wall. In a charming visual greeting, they open and close at varying speeds as a person passes by.

Art on the sea

“Luminosity” embraces art in an extraordinary way. Beauty in its purest form blends with comfort and onboard needs. Every single detail tells a story. Every creation evokes masterpieces of artists who have left a mark on the history of art. Endless details catch the eye without having to compete for the attention. Damien Hirst’s famous coloured circles find new expression on the French limestone floor in the Main Deck Lobby. As for Man Ray, an extraordinary eye-shaped construction at the base of the 18-meter-high stairwell winks at his magnificent work. The hymn to life of Matisse’s collages inspires the intriguing shapes throughout the yacht’s Main Saloon and Lounge. Among them, a sinuous configuration of hand-forged steel polished to a mirror that encloses a thousand Bohemian crystal bulbs illuminates the main lounge.

Other enchanting stories adorn this space: the beginning of Melville’s Moby Dick is gently engraved on the crafted pillars. The adventures of the world’s great sea faring explorers enrich the refined Portuguese Majolica tiles by Boca do Lobo on the cabinetry. An ensemble of highly polished concave and convex dishes flood the Master Deck Office with light. A great tribute to the Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor. Another eyecatcher on this deck is the Master Stateroom full custom Culligan hydromassage, crafted from one single block of the same marble used by Michelangelo to sculpt his outstanding David in Florence. The changing lunar phases in a single piece of Iranian onyx cut with surgical precision. A dreamy Moon Light shines upon the Upper Deck VIP suite.

First-class entertainment

The yacht has two 3,5-meter dishes to receive signals anywhere in the world, and fibre optic cables to distribute it throughout the vessel. Where fibre optic cables are not appropriate to use, another cable called Cat 8 is employed – a cutting edge super-fast connection never used on a yacht of this size before. Two racks on board the yacht house servers for films and music, and a total of 74 top of the range televisions (70 tv + 4 cinema projectors) are distributed throughout “ Luminosity ” as well 10 intelligent mirrors on board including touch screen with multimedia and internet connection. 5G cables throughout the yacht ensure that systems are future proofed.

Safety first

Built to comply with the PYC Code, safety has been of huge importance in the creation on “Luminosity”. The most stringent requirements to use fire-proof and fire-retardant materials of a particularly high quality throughout. A sophisticated medical centre can cater for unexpected illness and injury offering guests peace of mind.

The best super yacht pools in the world!

Superyacht swimming pools represent the ultimate spot for on-board relaxation and some of the world’s biggest yacht builders have taken novel approaches to this challenge. Here is a closer look at some of the finest examples:

1. HERE COMES THE SUN

Firstly take a look at the main deck swimming pool on board 83 metre HERE COMES THE SUN.  Easy to access, this long and shallow pool ends with a swim-up bar — one of the main attractions of the first Amels Limited Editions 272 yacht, which was delivered to her Beatles-loving owner in early 2017.

2. SEVEN SINS

With a glass bottom and glass panels, the pool on the first Sanlorenzo 52 Steel yacht SEVEN SINS  plays with transparencies, creating a spectacular effect in the super yacht beach club below. Styled inside and out by Officinal Italiana Design  SEVEN SINS  was launched in January 2017 and is the largest yacht from Sanlorenzo to date.

At the heart of the entertainment on the top deck, both the swimming pool and the spa pool on the 95 metre Lurssen super yacht KISMET  are kept at the perfect temperature thanks to a generator heat-recovery system. As if that wasn’t enough, there are two further pools in KISMET’s spectacular spa, including a plunge pool for a refreshing dip after a spell in the hammam.

The deep pool on the main deck of the 74 metre CRN custom yacht CLOUD 9 contains 10,000 litres of water projecting wave patterns into the beach club below it. The swimming pool also had an influence on the interior styling by British studio Winch Design — a 1.5 metre deep lie-down sofa can be found in the adjacent saloon, which is ideal for relaxing after doing a couple of lengths.

5. Savannah

When Feadship teamed up with CG Design to create SAVANNAH  there was a real focus on fine details, and the swimming pool is a great example of this with an intricate mosaic pattern created on the bottom. Flanked by sunpads and a massive C-shaped wrap of seating, this is an ideal spot to soak up some sun.

The sublimely silent 66 metre ISA suepryacht OKTO  has a real party piece — a superyacht swimming pool that can change colour. Measuring 6.5 metres by 4.5 metres, this aft-deck pool features underwater lighting that can switch from blue to red to green at the touch of a button, and a large pane of glass above the name plate means that those relaxing on the bathing platform can also appreciate this stunning effect.

7. QUITE ESSENTIAL

Five years before Heesen revealed Galactica Super Nova , the concept of a superyacht pool with a waterfall was already proven on board the 55 metre yacht QUITE ESSENTIAL , previously known as Quinta Essentia . This opaque sheet of water falls into the spa pool, providing added privacy on the main deck when moored stern-to in port.

The pool on Sunrise’s luxury yacht IRIMARI  is worthy of inclusion in our collection of the best superyacht pools. Located forward on the sun deck, our favourite feature is the glass wall that faces the bar, although anyone swimming is guaranteed fantastic views as the pool lines up with the very front of the yacht.

9. ALFA NERO

You all know what the H stands for. Yes, the bottom of ALFA NERO’s pool rises up to create a helicopter landing pad, flush with the deck. It’s got a built-in current and incredible views too. The iconic yacht ALFA NERO is oft-credited as the first yacht to embrace the infinity pool, and even years after its launch, ALFA NERO’s  pool still ranks among the best.

The pool aboard H2-designed VICKY sits on its own terrace at the front of her sun deck, making this one of the most private and best superyacht pools around. Wraparound sunpads mean you can go from water to sunning with drink in hand in two seconds flat.

Inside the $60 million superyacht with a secret indoor pool and cinema

A mystery billionaire’s superyacht stirred controversy on TikTok after video of its ‘secret pool’ emerged. Few people have enough money to choose between swimming in the ocean or bathing in their own private floating pool while sailing the world. The mystery owner of Leona, a $60,000,000 (£43,000,000) 263ft-long behemoth built by the Turkish-based luxury yacht builder Bilgin, has deep enough pockets for exactly that luxury (Picture: Bilgin Yachts)

Life On A Yacht With A Pool

Doesn’t sound too shabby, right? A yacht with a pool is becoming more common among the top yachts for charter or purchase. We’re not talking about Olympic-size pools with a super high diving board, but then again, when you have the entire ocean at your beck and call, who needs one?

Pool or Deck Jacuzzi

If all you really need is a quick dip or even a soothing hydro-massage, the on deck Jacuzzi typically acts as the pool on board. Water temperature can be regulated in most, so turning off the heat is an option if you need to cool down after an onboard workout. Either way, a yacht with a pool offers the ultimate in relaxation while you take in the vast views of the sea.

Exercise On A Yacht

If you’re a swimmer and enjoy challenges, a lap pool is not unheard of aboard some of the finest yachts. Equipped with an intense water jet stream, which is activated upon demand at different speeds, an artificial current disburses the resistance you crave for a full-body workout.

Yachts With Large Pools

Some onboard pools are large, and offer space for up to 12 people, so the whole charter party can socialize together, sipping custom cocktails and nibbling on tapas. The idea of a yacht with a pool starts to become more realistic when you picture yourself luxuriating with family and friends in the middle of the ocean.

Custom Yacht Pool

Almost anything seems possible when building a custom yacht with a pool. Some superyachts feature an infinity pool, making you feel at one with the ocean. A raised-deck pool broadens your views in all directions, unobstructed and expansive. Some yacht stylists can create intricate designs at the bottom and sides of a pool with mosaic tiles that can form some of the most elaborate patterns.

The most spectacular yacht in the world with indoor pool, aquarium and world’s first floating garage.

This prestige was crafted by  studio zuccon international project  and was designed in collaboration with CRN’s technical office and centro stile.  CRN  is a brand of the  Ferretti Group  that was founded in 1968 on the centuries-old italian shipbuilding tradition. The company is a world leader in the design, construction and sale of motor yachts that have always been characterized for their quality, safety and sea performance.

The  CRN mega yachts ‘j’ade’ 60m vessel  was designed to feel at one with the sea as it boasts special full height windows that provide exceptionally wide panoramic views. This feeling is even more evident because of the innovative flooded garage that enables the owner to store and easily access the 8 meter riva iseo speedboat without the use for a tender lift. While swimming pools and helipads are commonplace on many a mega yacht, J’ade features the  world’s first floating garage.

J’ade features a hydraulic-operated hatch which can store an eight-metre speedboat without the use of a tender lift to hoist it out of the water. A mixture of marble, wood, metals and leather materials are used. The internal basin floods and empties 18,000 litres of water in just three minutes, allowing the boat to enter the yacht without the use of a crane.

Solving the problem of adding pools in yachts

Unlike on the land, where creatives can create a suite of fountains to dance and sway on command, incorporating a even simple water features such as a small fountain or a waterfall aboard a yacht brings with it many challenges to consider.

Because a yacht is designed to move through water, the opportunity to easily defy the laws of physics is lost. 'The moment you start rocking the boat,' says designer Evan K. Marshall, 'everything is thrown off.'

Problems with pools

Historically, the biggest consideration was how to manage water on the boat.

The movement of the boat itself creates a wave momentum in on-board pools that can become difficult to contain, even in the calmest of cruising conditions.

For this reason, the easiest solution was to use the pool only when the yacht was docked or at anchor, with all guests ordered out so that the pool could be emptied or drained to half capacity before the yacht got underway. While this remains a common practice, most pools are now also designed with deep surrounding sumps that capture wayward water and return it via a circulator pump and/or a holding tank that stores the warm water between uses.

Today the issue is not only about the 'wow' factor, but about incorporating the amenities an owner might enjoy on land into his yacht.

'When a boat grows [in length], the owner wants a bigger pool,' says Frank Laupman of Omega Architects. 'The pool is never big enough, especially for swimmers. We would like to make a 10 metre pool, but most of the time you can only do one of seven to eight metres.'

The typical solution is to create an infinity pool with a swim-against current feature.

Location is critical a large pool on an upper deck creates a weight issue that can interfere with the boat's stability and centre of gravity. For this reason most pools are placed on a lower deck near the stern. However, here you must consider the shape of the hull. While an owner might request a depth of around five feet, a fast semi-displacement hull, for example, would mandate that the depth stay in the three to four foot range.

The bigger the pool, the more water it will require, which adds weight to the vessel, and thus becomes a factor for the engines.

'We are careful with cutting-edge designs,' says Laupman, whose firm is currently working on a 73m boat for which a large pool is an important feature.

He agrees that there are more considerations than meet the eye. 'Most designers have to determine whether the pool should be located on the aft deck so that it is indoor/outdoor, or covered on the lower deck so guests can jump from the platform into the water. Then it becomes how to combine this design with saunas, gyms, seating areas, side hatches and whatever else might be required for the beach club.'

On the 73m project_ Omega, _the beach club floor was designed to be flush with the hatch that extends at the stern. The pool water is on the same level as the floor, which required some tricks with height due to the boat's shallow draft.

'You can only do this with a big boat, such as a Lürssen or CRN. Most of the time it is not possible; you need to climb three steps to reach the swim platform, which compromises the indoor/outdoor relationship. It's not really state-of-the-art work,' Laupman says, 'but you must do your homework.'

Interior water features

Designer Pascale Reymond of Reymond Langton Design likes to make a water feature an interior focal point, combining water movement with carved stone art pieces or contemporary ornamental glass, coupled with dynamic lighting, reflective surfaces and textures.

'Not only do waterjets or waterfalls add entertainment,' she says, 'moving water can mask any unnatural sounds to maintain a sense of tranquillity.'

In each of their foyer waterfall projects aboard large yachts, Reymond Langton have carefully engineered their designs to ensure the water flows smoothly in the intended direction.

This is an important consideration, confirms Jonathan Quinn Barnett, who has designed several interior waterfalls unfortunately for use aboard yachts too private to be published.

'Water doesn't always behave the way you want it to,' he says. 'It can take on a life of its own.'

Barnett advises consulting with an engineering group early on if you envision a specific water feature to ensure that the desired effect can be achieved.

'[An interior waterfall] is hardly going to be like standing next to a natural waterfall,' he points out. 'If you don't get that effect, is it worth doing?'

In 1994, Barnett created a 7m waterfall aboard a 73m vessel that fell the length of three decks.

'I used Plexiglas shields and angled the water back to minimize the splashing. By adding subtle texture to the wall,' he details, 'you can put some life back into the water as it falls vertically because it's falling down an uneven surface. Adding light creates a greater visual effect.

'With an interior waterfall, it is critical that you pitch the surface ever so slightly at the vertical,' he advises.

When the water is angled back at two degrees, it will attach itself to the surface and stay there. The water falls to a catch basin and returns to the top via a circulator pump.

On a 91m yacht, Barnett designed a bathtub that filled from a waterfall eight feet above.

'I incorporated LED lights recessed into the marble that illuminated the water as it cascaded down the surface,' he says. 'The marble also needed to be heated the same system as under-floor heating so that the water did not get chilled as it travelled from the ceiling.'

Oceano pushing boundaries

No builder has been more forward thinking in its 60m+ design concepts than Oceanco, who has assembled a consultative set of designers around the globe to provide intriguing designs, most of which exhibit water features that elicit a 'wow'.

The 87.5m Waterfall concept does just that. Envisioned by Andy Moore of Moore Yacht Design, the design has two versions: one with a large pool and the second with a smaller pool to allow for more lounging areas. Central to the design are waterfalls intended to mimic the 'unadulterated power and splendour of natural waterfalls'. On the version with the larger pool, the waterfall appears to originate from within the main superstructure and fall into the forward end of the pool.

'Implementing the design so that the function supports the aesthetics is a complex matter,' says Moore. To keep the water off the deck, the main body is aimed into a large, deep drop-off. From there the volume is reduced as it cascades under a bridge and through the aft superstructure. Each water level is designed so that the cascades will not fall onto the deck, steps or transom when the yacht moves.

'One cubic metre of water weighs a ton, so there are certainly some important stability considerations to take into account at the planning stage of any significant water feature aboard a yacht,' notes Moore. 'For this design, I have worked closely with the naval architecture and design department at Oceanco, which currently have engineering studies underway.'

While the likes of Jon Bannenberg and Tim Heywood have successfully executed designs with water that flowed down between masts or pools that filled with waterfalls, some scepticism remains.

'When you're at sea,' says Barnett, 'playing with too much water on deck runs the risk of being gimmicky. You have to be extremely careful to ensure you achieve the desired effect especially for the cost, maintenance and logistics required to run water down, through or under decks.'

But exploration and development into the area of on-board water features remains strong.

'We are exploring a design where water originates at the top deck and falls to the stern and into the water,' says Stefan van Cleef of technology specialist van Berge Henegouwen. In this design, the water maintains its course even when there is movement.

'The higher it gets, the more different the route of the water droplets,' says van Cleef, 'but so far the biggest problem has been to curb the sound when such a feature is placed in the interior. We are exploring other areas and ways around it.'

Yacht design often takes its inspiration from other industries, and with water features it only makes sense that we explore what has been achieved in the cruise ship sector. The 360m Oasis of the Seas features a water-based theatrical space at the boat's stern with a deep pool and nozzles capable of shooting streams of water up to 20 metres into the air.

Designer Martin Francis acted as a consultant on the Oasis project and is well versed in both worlds of private yachts and cruise ships.

'Cruise ships don't move much relative to yachts, so incorporating a fountain can be pretty straightforward. It depends on how big the fountain is and, provided the wind direction, water can be pumped up.'

Water logistics

California-based Fluidity Design Consultants were brought in to advise on this particular aspect of Oasis's water feature.

'With a ship's motion, there is no way to guarantee a level,' says Fluidity's vice president Tom Yankelitis, 'so this eliminated certain types of effects we could achieve. When you're pumping water through a nozzle, you're only relying on pressure so it doesn't matter what angle the boat is at because the water will perform at a relatively consistent manner in that device.'

Fluidity Design presented a range of nozzles that were more resistant to ship motion and wind that could turn on or off, shoot water up in the air and in an arc across the pool. Nozzles incorporated into a bridge above the pool allowed for a rain effect.

'Even with these particular nozzles, we still had to do things in the space to mitigate wind and the wave action in the pool,' says Yankelitis.

During the design process, engineers had to reconfigure a two- to three-metre wide lift down the centre of the pool to be strengthened for lateral motion to attenuate the wave action and lessen the lateral force.

Studies also determined that the space's location at the aft end of the ship would have wind blowing from the rear back in, so sails were devised to protect the water effects. In the end, the architects ended up conceding that the first four rows of spectators might be splashed upon.

Will we soon see choreographed fountains swaying on the stern?

'Anything is possible with money and a bulldozer,' says Barnett. Beware, however, as even aboard Oasis of the Seas one of the challenges was scaling down the power consumption required by the spray nozzles. 'A modest fountain with a dozen vertical nozzles spraying six feet high would require about four times the power of a 20 by 15 foot unheated swimming pool,' says Yankelitis.

If you can fit a pool big enough, Martin Francis has designed and pioneered a system of wave attenuation implemented aboard the 80m _Golden Odyssey _to combat that age-old issue.

'The system is designed to take the momentum out of the wave,' Francis explains. Based on the interring anti-heeling system of interconnecting water tanks used to stabilize ships, water flows from one tank to another in a controlled way designed to dampen roll. The wave is captured at the pool's edge in a holding tank and released back into the pool as the ship rolls. This takes the top off the wave and is 'very effective,' says Francis.

Incorporating a water feature isn't a complex problem, states Barnett. 'Once you work through the logistics of it, you can get some fantastic effects. There may be some compromises to be made, however.'

Eduard Gray of Gray Yacht Design is ready to push that envelope.

'As a designer I work with engineers who try to interpret my design into real-world solutions,' he says. 'This way, I am allowed a degree of freedom for innovative thinking before being brought back to earth with the constraints of regulations and physical limitations.'

His latest design, the 100m Sovereign, features an infinity pool with a glass-topped helicopter landing pad. Regulations aside, how do guests disembark from the aircraft with out having to swim? But that is what engineers are for.
