This is the latest, World Cruising Sailing Yacht from Polish builder Conrad Shipyard and her unusual lines take sailing yacht design onto a new path.

The design brief called for a strong muscular layout akin to the SUV vehicles seen on our roads so often these days. It was our aim to match this in harmony with the appeal and elegance of a modern family cruiser.

CONRAD 115’s exterior styling underlines her ability to venture far from her homeport while providing a safe and comfortable home to its owner, guest and crew while doing so.

The high end sail control systems usually found on much larger yachts, comprise hydraulically operated captive reel winches as well as furling for foresails and in boom furling for main and mizzen. The distribution of the sailplan over two masts ensures safe and comfortable sail handling on offshore passages and leisurly coastal cruises alike. The use of internal ballast ensures that the access to shallow bays and coves is open to be explored by this unique sailing vessel.

It was the aim of shipyard and designers to provide a spacious and luxurious interior, outstanding visibility and very good weather protection. Be it under the bimini from the sun of tropical waters or inside the large pilot house when cruising under the harsh conditions sometimes encountered in the higher latitudes.

The combination of a high freeboard and a self contained bridgedeck beside the pilothouse provide also ample safe playground for kids and family reunions, while the forward tender bays acts as a Jacuzzi when in port or at anchor.

The gently sweeping sheerlines provide a wonderful frame for a spectacular forward view when enjoying the hot tub after a long day of sailing.

The aft bathing platform provides comfortable access to the sea when anchoring in pristine waters. All the onboard toys like tenders and jet skis stored in the stern garage can be comfortably launched with the help of a hydraulic lifting platform.

High quality materials have been used throughout in her construction. Carbon masts, paired with a hull and deck built from high end marine grade aluminium alloy form a great base for a sturdy and long lasting construction. This is underlined by her Lloyds Register of Shipping classification.

A high level of independence is achieved with large tanks and twin desalinators, so that even remote areas can be explored thoroughly and in style.

Her distinct and harmonious lines set this family sail cruiser truly apart from other sailing vessels and motor yachts. A yacht which will be always easily recognized in the ports of the world.

Superyacht Luna Owner Russian Oligarch Farkhad Akhmedov Retains Ownership

megayacht luna impounded

Originally, Russian oligarch Farkhad Akhmedov was ordered by the London High Court in 2016 to pay his ex-wife, Tatiana Akhmedova, approximately 40% of his fortune in one of the largest divorce settlements in history. Akhmedov, however, failed to pay the $594 million divorce settlement, causing the London court to grant a worldwide freezing order of his assets, under which is superyacht Luna was impounded in Dubai. The judgment stated the Ahkmedov had attempted to ring-fence some of his assets, including Luna, from U.K. courts, thereby restricting his ex-wife’s access to his global assets.

Built by German shipyard Lloyd Werft and launched in 2010, the 115-meter explorer superyacht was originally built for Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. Akhmedov bought her in 2014 and accomplished an extensive refit of the vessel that has nine decks, two helipads, a vast swimming pool and space for 50 crew.

The Dubai Court of Appeals has ruled that the country’s lower court order to impound the yacht was wrong, but lawyers acting for Tatiana Akhmedova called the ruling a procedural decision and said the case has been referred to another Dubai court for a further hearing.

In a statement, Ahkmedova’s lawyers said she will continue to pursue her claims in the Dubai Courts and is bolstered by a recently successful measure in British Courts to secure Luna.

Akhmedov said he and his ex-wife, who married in 1993, were divorced in Russia in 2000, yet in 2012 she filed a divorce petition in British courts. Akhmedov’s net worth is estimated at $1.4 billion. He is on the U.S. Treasury Department’s list of sanctioned Russian oligarchs and state-owned companies with tie to Vladimir Putin.

LUNA Yacht – Glamorous $300M Superyacht

LUNA yacht has had an incredible journey over the years and has had a few facelifts as well.

Until now, LUNA is famous for being the world’s largest expedition yacht. Despite its large size, it is also known for having many family-friendly amenities that create a homey feel to it.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image-3.png

LUNA yacht interior

The interior of LUNA is chic but calming, which differs from the intensity of its exterior’s hard lines.

The designer, Lloyd Werft wanted to make sure each room of this vessel was appreciated appropriately.

The lounge and dining room are split by a wall and fireplace, so guests can enjoy different experiences in each room.

Guests can also enjoy a moment of serenity in the low aft deck’s sun worship room.

After some deep breathing exercises here, guests can also take a swim in the large pool that was once the largest pool on a superyacht.

Some other amenities on the LUNA superyacht are two tender garages, a gym, a beach club, a steam bath, a plunge pool, and a sauna.

It has a variety of activities for people to enjoy regardless of age.

Though LUNA has gone through many changes in her short lifetime, she continues to be a classic superyacht.

She is not only incredible to look at, but has everything needed for a good time out on the ocean.

LUNA was created to be a space for both adults and children to play in and have an unforgettable experience.

With the hard work of many workers and designers, LUNA has come to achieve that goal.

Specifications

The impressive LUNA yacht measures 115 meters and can reach top speeds of 22.5 knots.

It holds 9 staterooms that can house up to 18 guests and 49 crew members. The engine room of LUNA is different from most superyachts.

Not only is it large in volume, but it has a special polish that keeps the engine room squeaky clean.

Some staff members have described it as the cleanest engine room they have ever worked in.

There are seven generators that power the electric motors that take up less space on the ship, decrease vibrations, and make for a more economical ride.

Many have said that the original paint job was not the best, to put it lightly. One of its 130 jobs was to repaint the whole hull of the LUNA yacht.

It now has a mirror finish from end to end on its 2,000+ square meters of hull.

It took over 70 painters and eight months to finish this massive undertaking.

Now LUNA has a continuous shine along its hull with not a blemish in sight.

The interior of the LUNA yacht is chic but calming, which differs from the intensity of its exterior’s hard lines.

The LUNA yacht was created to be a space for both adults and children to play in and have an unforgettable experience.

LUNA yacht background

Originally built by Llod Werft Roman Abramovich, it was sold to Akhmedov in 2014.

With its change in owners, it also changed in appearance. LUNA had a 14-month-long process with around 130 jobs.

These changes included adding wine fridges and separating the ballast tank system. It took a lot of work, but it definitely improved on a classic superyacht.

Yacht Seizure

Millennials Are Buying Yachts

Ten years from now, Millennials will have taken over the superyacht world. At least that’s the forecast by several experts who are seeing ages of yacht buyers trending younger.

That trend is expected to continue, according to research from Italian yacht builder Rossinavi and the University of Monaco, with the average age of superyacht buyers decreasing 10 to 15 years over the next decade. That could make Millennials the primary buyers of superyachts.

The topic of younger buyers is a constant discussion in shipyard boardrooms and among designers looking to modify their designs to this changing market. It was also one of the topics at the recent Yachtmaster event in Key West, hosted by Benetti Yachts . Benetti sponsors Yachtmaster events twice a year (the European edition was in Budapest last month) to brief captains and other professionals on new trends in the superyacht industry.

Benetti Yachtmasters 2024

“We have been doing this event for 24 years now,” Benetti Americas manager Nick Bischoff told Robb Report . “The intent is to continue to build relationships with influencers of our current and prospective owners. In the beginning that meant mostly captains, but it’s expanded to include surveyors and owners’ reps, too.” The ultimate goal, says Bischoff, is for participants not only to network, but “put their heads together to create an ever-improving onboard experience both for owners and crew.”

Many seminars focused on the concept of onboard lifestyle, which most brokers and shipyards see as a primary driver for purchasing a shipyard. Benetti’s head of product, Sebastiano Vida, also spoke about how lifestyle influences new designs in the yachts.

But Jason Dunbar, a broker and appraisal surveyor with Vessel Value Survey, recommended tough love to the brokers. His discussion about managing expectations for newbie owners included advice about being “realistic” with owners who are flush with cash, but might be new to the superyacht world. If an owner wants a brand-new 120-footer with a crew of six, but has a budget of $8 million, the broker is the one who needs to break the bad news. “A good broker has to tell people ‘Listen, that’s just not going to happen,’” says Dunbar. “That will save a lot of headaches down the road and will hopefully keep a client in boating for the long term.”

Benetti Yachtmaster Even Oasis Deck

A new buyer is often coming off a one-week charter that was magical: perfect weather, a well-oiled boat, and a crew looking forward to a little R&R after hustling all week for the charter guests. “It’s relatively easy to make things work like that one week at a time,” says Dunbar. “But a new owner who wants to use their boat for 10, 15, or 30 weeks, that’s a totally different thing. You may have to tell them they need to hire two crews and rotate them—which will be news to them.” He said that overworking the crew will “burn through humans.” The crew will be miserable, he says, which will make the boat not live up to the owners’ expectations. “The next thing you know these new owners will be long gone from yachting.”

Fraser Yachts CEO Anders Kurtén sees the new buyers as a boon for design creativity in an old-school industry. “It starts with a piece of paper,” he says. “We sit down and start designing these boats for younger clients and we see similar trends. Basically they all want to live their shore-based lives on a yacht.”

The segmented and often claustrophobic interiors of many current superyacht designs, says Dirand, just doesn’t float with the new generation. “Young owners’ preferences are honed by hospitality and a knowledge of architectural trends,” he says.

Azimut Benetti Group

Because of that, wellness centers have become focal points of design. As moguls like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have made clear as of late, having six-pack abs in middle age is the new Lamborghini. These new owners expect their boats to be designed with beach clubs with gyms, saunas, massage areas that allow owners and guests to work out or relax, amidst warm sun rays and luscious sea breezes.

Kurtén also pointed to green tech as key for the new generation of clients. “We’ve hit a point where a 150-foot sailboat can go across the Atlantic without burning a drop of fuel. And motoryachts can function on battery-only mode, at least when they are close to port,” he says. “That’s important to these new clients—they want to be green. A few years ago that was something you said at a cocktail party, but today it’s a reality for a lot of buyers.”

Peter Selivanoff, senior yacht service manager for Fraser, also spoke about how owners are seeking highly specialized crews who can perform multiple functions across the yacht.

Navigating these new realities is an important part for the industry to future-proof itself in the competitive realm of ultra-luxury products. This is a place where youth may not spring eternal but, at least for now, it reigns supreme.

California yacht owner threatens to kill dock worker in vicious showdown, cali yacht owner threatens to kill dock worker drops pants for rude salute, 95 3/13/2024 8:09 am pt.

A California yacht owner's vicious beef with a dock worker has reached death-threat levels -- and their exchange was caught on camera and included a nude, and very rude, gesture!

Check out the clip ... it all unfolds when San Diego entrepreneur Ajay Thakore swings by the swanky Marriott Marquis Marina in his rare $4.5M Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht to pick up one of his employees -- but things boil over when dock worker Joseph Holt tells him he can't be there.

Thakore, the CEO of medical advertising firm Doctor Multimedia, flips out on Holt big time ... and starts spewing threats like, "I will kill you, you know I will kill you, I will kill."

And it doesn't stop there -- as Thakore's pulling out of the harbor, he drops trou to make a full frontal salute in Holt's direction. Stay classy, San Diego!

Holt's only retaliation was flipping the bird, and he later told CBS8 that was all he could do to keep his cool and avoid escalating the situation.

Holt says parts of the altercation were not captured on camera, and he adds ... Thakore not only threatened to kill him, but also claimed to have connections who could totally mess up his life.

Holt also says Thakore pulled out $100 bills and tossed them at him, even chucking some in the water.

BTW, Thakore's done some backpedaling since the ugly exchange -- he now says, "The interaction that occurred yesterday was regrettable. What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange."

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

FWIW ... One of Thakore’s employees claims the whole thing began because other dock workers blocked him from boarding the yacht.

Oh, and if that fancy Lambo yacht looks familiar -- it's the same one Chuck Liddell recently tumbled off just last month. Now it's famous AND infamous!

Texas Judge Warns Pet Owners Before Solar Eclipse

A Texas judge is urging pet owners to stock up on supplies for their animals in advance of the total solar eclipse next month.

On April 8, the moon will be positioned so that the entire disc of the sun will be blocked out in several U.S. states, plunging millions of people into darkness during the early afternoon. The path of totality will start in Mexico and extend across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine before heading out over the North Atlantic.

The spectacle is expected to draw crowds from around the nation as people head to areas in the path of totality to witness the eclipse. Texas officials have voiced concerns about stretched public safety resources, an "enormous strain" on local hospitals and congested roadways.

The concerns prompted Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly to issue a disaster declaration on March 4, in which he said that the influx of visitors could "drain our food and fuel supplies and strain our city and county infrastructure to, quite possibly, over capacity."

Kelly singled out pet owners and urged them to purchase any supplies needed to tend to their animals a week before the eclipse.

Read more: Save Money on Pet and Food Supplies

"I encourage you to stay off the roads and at home, if possible, on the day of the event," Kelly said, according to a webpage about the disaster declaration. "Also, in the week preceding the event, I would encourage you to make sure your vehicles are tanked up, that you have sufficient grocery supplies, that your prescriptions are filled and that you are stocked up on provisions for any animals in your care over the duration of eclipse weekend."

In the disaster declaration, Kelly said that the county of 53,000 people could easily see a tripling of its population because of visitors for the eclipse. The declaration will remain in effect until terminated by the county judge at some point after the eclipse date.

The Kerr County offices will be closed during the eclipse, with employee safety given as the reason. Many schools in the region also plan to close for the day out of concern for student safety. For example, Hays County schools will close. The district previously planned to be open for the event and even purchased viewing glasses for all students so they could safely observe the eclipse .

Read more: Best Credit Cards to Save on Gas

Glasses will now be sent home with students, along with "fun activities and assignments for eclipse day," Hays school district spokesperson Tim Savoy previously told Newsweek in a statement.

Issuing a disaster declaration allows counties to request state assistance and resources from the Texas Division of Emergency Management should they be needed. Newsweek reached out to TDEM by email for comment.

Although only certain states will be in the path of totality, every state in the contiguous U.S. will be able to see some form of the eclipse, with only small parts of Hawaii and Alaska missing out.

The last total solar eclipse in the U.S. was on August 21, 2017. The next one will not occur in North America until 2044 .

Private jet and yachts seized as three arrested in £76m luxury care homes raid

Three people have been arrested as part of a sting by the Serious Fraud Office into property developer the Carlauren Group.

Tuesday 12 March 2024 14:09, UK

The group allegedly left 600 investors out of pocket as they splashed on luxury vehicles. Pic: SFO

A private jet and two yachts have been seized, as three people have been arrested, in a £76m raid on a group who ran luxury care homes.

Two sites were raided across St Leonard's, Dorset, and Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, as part of the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) probe, supported by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

The investigation is looking into the UK registered property developer, the Carlauren Group, which collapsed into administration in November 2019.

When it folded, the SFO said that it led to some elderly residents being forced to move out, and left 600 investors out of pocket.

The Carlauren Group bought 23 properties across the UK, often former hotels including the historic Windlestone Hall in Durham, and allegedly claimed to offer annual 10 per cent returns to investors as it sought to turn the buildings into high-end care homes.

The SFO raided two sites today

However, the SFO said only nine of these became operational and some continued as hotels instead of care homes.

Alongside that, the group allegedly purchased a number of supercars, including two Lamborghinis and a McLaren 570GT, a private jet and two yachts.

Nick Ephgrave QPM, director of the Serious Fraud Office, said: "This company's abrupt collapse has created turmoil and enormous anxiety for many, with elderly people forced to vacate their homes and investors left with nothing.

"Today's arrests are a major development in our investigation and a step towards getting the answers so many people need."

The group was said to have had 600 people and companies invest in the scheme through the purchase of rooms that were to be rented out to the elderly.

This was inside luxury facilities that boasted of swimming pools, room service and other amenities.

According to the SFO, the rooms were advertised and sold with a guaranteed annual payout and opportunity to sell the asset back for a profit after 10 years

In NASA’s Push for the Moon, Commercial Partners Soar—And Stumble

NASA’s partnership with private industry to accelerate the U.S.’s return to the moon is delivering lunar payloads—and mixed results

By Leonard David

Intuitive Machines’ Odysseus lunar lander captures a round, wide field of view image, with heavy distortion from a fisheye lens, of Schomberger crater near the spacecraft's landing site on the moon.

It has been a rough-and-tumble start for hurling hardware and science experiments to the moon under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative, dubbed CLPS.

Under CLPS, American vendors have been contracted to assist the space agency in revitalizing the nation’s lunar exploration capabilities , all in preparation for a crewed lunar landing at the lunar south pole slated to take place no earlier than September 2026 as part of NASA’s sprawling Artemis human spaceflight program .

Commercial deliveries of scientific equipment and putting technical demonstrations through their paces is what CLPS is all about; the public-private partnership could bestow as much as $2.6 billion in competitive contracts through 2028.

All that NASA cash, the agency relates, is meant to be a cost-saving, pennies-on-the-dollar investment with outsized rewards that will help to lay the foundation for sustained human presence on the moon while also kickstarting the creation of a lunar economy. And, if successful on the moon’s proving grounds, NASA and its commercial partners alike could then raise their sights higher to contemplate similar collaborations on future human voyages to Mars.

That’s the off-and-running vision—but there are some early speed bumps.

Emotional Roller Coaster

The first CLPS outing to the moon was doomed shortly after a flawless liftoff on January 8 aboard a United Launch Alliance Vulcan Centaur rocket. Built by the private space firm Astrobotic Technology, the Peregrine Mission One spacecraft suffered a propulsion system failure that negated an intended gentle touchdown at the Gruithuisen Domes region of the moon.

Peregrine was loaded with 20 payloads from seven nations that included NASA-supplied experiments and those of 16 commercial customers.

The troubled spacecraft wound up being finessed via improvised nudging from the company’s ground control team into a controlled, self-destructing reentry into Earth’s atmosphere; it plunged into remote South Pacific waters some 10 days after launching.

“It was an emotional roller coaster,” says John Thornton, chief executive officer of Astrobotic, based in Pittsburgh, Pa. “We went from the highest high after launch—then a few hours later we were on the lowest low.”

NASA had funded the mission to the tune of $108 million—a figure, Thornton notes, that also included success fees, which made up 10 percent of that total. Given the lander’s outcome, the company will not receive that cash, he says. Even so, Thornton remains upbeat and is convinced that the CLPS approach works and is achievable.

“We feel that there’s business left to be done here,” Thornton says. “We’re doing these missions at a fraction of what they would normally cost. The challenge that the commercial players are faced with is trying to find that sweet spot [and] getting that balance by identifying the appropriate places to take the risk to reduce cost.”

Peregrine Postmortem

A postmortem failure review board for Peregrine is now at work. It is comprised of Astrobotic and NASA personnel and chaired by independent reviewers “to make sure that it’s an unbiased result at the end of the day and we get the truth,” Thornton says.

This look-see into what went wrong will move quickly, Thornton says, in comparison with more standard and slow-paced NASA reviews of space mishaps. The review’s findings are urgently needed, he adds, to help guide Peregrine’s CLPS follow-up, Astrobotic’s Griffin lunar lander.

The Griffin lander has five times the carrying capacity of Peregrine—much of which will be used to haul NASA’s water-seeking Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover, or VIPER. VIPER’s snooping will be targeted near the western edge of the Nobile Crater at the moon’s south pole, with a launch officially booked to occur by year’s end. But the timing of that plan is likely to change.

“I’d say the probability is high that we’ll have a schedule challenge,” Thornton says. “We’ve got to get it right on this next one.”

Coming in Hot

Developed and operated by Intuitive Machines of Houston, Tex., the next CLPS-funded mission after Peregrine was IM-1, the flight of the Odysseus lunar lander, which rocketed from Earth on February 15. On February 22 this $118-million spacecraft became the first U.S.-built probe to make a lunar touchdown since the crewed landing of Apollo 17 more than half a century earlier.

Flag-waving aside, Odysseus can’t boast a glitch-free descent to its intended destination, the crater Malapert A, near the moon’s south pole.

Minor issues emerged from the spotty performance of the spacecraft’s state-of-the-art propulsion system, which used a combination of cryogenic liquid oxygen and liquid methane. Bigger problems came from a glitch in Odysseus’ laser range finders—a crucial kit for the home stretch of lunar approach that did not function because of a prelaunch oversight by Intuitive Machines. That mistake came back to bite them on lunar landing day and sent mission controllers scrambling for alternative ways to ensure a safe, spot-on touchdown. Thankfully the company’s quick-thinking personnel managed to repurpose other onboard navigation instrumentation to get the descending Odysseus within a mile of its targeted landing area.

But the six-legged lander came in too hot. It arrived with a higher downward and horizontal speed than planned, hitting harder and skidding across sloping terrain, snapping off some of its landing gear in the process. Meanwhile the Odysseus main engine was still firing—and when it ceased, the lander tipped over to a roughly 30-degree angle off the surface. That cockeyed orientation reduced the sunlight reaching the spacecraft’s solar panels and also compromised several antennae, reducing transmissions to and from the lunar surface to a trickle.

Still, Odysseus achieved its high-level mission objectives: surviving its too-hard “soft” touchdown relatively intact, as well as returning scientific data to customers, contends Steve Altemus, chief executive officer of Intuitive Machines. “Both of those objectives were met, so in our mind this is an unqualified success.”

Scrappy Little Dude

In a postlanding IM-1 status report, Sue Lederer, CLPS project scientist at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, said the bottom line was that each of the payloads “met some level of their objectives” and labeled Odysseus “a scrappy little dude.”

NASA’s Stereo Cameras for Lunar Plume Surface Studies (SCALPSS), one of the six NASA payloads, was not able to reach its full science threshold, however. SCALPSS was specifically focused on how the Odysseus rocket motor plume would scour the dusty lunar surface upon its descent, flinging debris that could potentially damage any nearby hardware. A better understanding of how rocket plumes raise and transport dust across the moon could also prove crucial to ensuring Artemis crews safely stick their future landings there.

Because of the failure of the lander’s laser range finders, the associated altitude data meant to trigger SCALPSS never arrived, so the experiment couldn’t obtain any imagery during and after Odysseus’ descent.

“Had SCALPSS operated during landing, the processed results could have been visualized as a 3D shape of the moon’s surface,” says Michelle Munk, acting chief architect for NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate and the SCALPSS principal investigator.

The Intuitive Machines cameras on Odysseus weren’t set up to collect the same kind of imagery, Munk says, but nonetheless may contain useful clues to help offset the absence of detailed data from SCALPSS.

Munk and her colleagues should get another chance to study rocket-lofted moon dust later this year via the next CLPS flight opportunity, Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost Mission 1.

Firefly Aerospace, based in Cedar Park, Tex., has CLPS task orders totaling nearly $230 million. Those dollars financially fuel the group’s Blue Ghost missions to the moon, slated for 2024 and 2026.

Blue Ghost Mission 1 is currently on tap to fly atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in the second half of 2024. The payloads on the 2026 Blue Ghost Mission 2 are headed for the far side of the moon, and may get there aboard Firefly’s in-development Beta launch vehicle. On the lunar far side, one payload in particular, dubbed Lunar Surface Electromagnetic Experiment-Night (LuSEE-Night), will test technologies for conducting transformative investigations in radio astronomy. With the moon’s bulk serving as shielding from the buzz and static of Earth-sourced interference, even a modest radio telescope should be able to detect faint signals from the primordial cosmos. If LuSEE-Night proves successful, however, “modest” may be the last word to describe future far-side radio telescopes , which could be built to staggering sizes to scrutinize the early universe in unprecedented detail.

Upcoming Moonshot

Firefly’s moonshot later this year will haul 10 NASA-sponsored payloads to Mare Crisium, a 556-kilometer-wide (345-mile-wide) flat-bottomed crater in the northern lunar hemisphere. Once there, experiments are to analyze the moon’s regolith, geophysical makeup and interactions between the solar wind and Earth’s magnetic field.

Bob Grimm, a planetary scientist at the Southwest Research Institute and principal investigator of a novel experiment flying on board Blue Ghost Mission 1, is excited for his shot at performing unique lunar science—but not without a touch of anxiety.

“The outcomes of both the Astrobotic and Intuitive Machines missions are worrisome,” Grimm says. Even so, “Firefly deserves to take their shot without preconceptions.” His payload, the Lunar Magnetotelluric Sounder (LMS), will use a magnetometer to probe as deep as 1,127 km (700 miles) into the moon’s subsurface, which will potentially reveal new details about our satellite’s internal structure.

In Grimm’s opinion, despite IM-1’s satisfactory outcome of avoiding catastrophe, it is a stretch that Intuitive Machines’ leadership has called the mission an “unqualified success.”

Regardless of labels, however, Ben Bussey, chief scientist at Intuitive Machines, says the company is firmly focused on ensuring that the lessons learned from IM-1 inform the outfit’s upcoming IM-2 moon lander mission. Slated to launch no earlier than the fourth quarter of this year, IM-2 is being dispatched to the ridgelike rim of the lunar south pole’s Shackleton Crater , a target also under scrutiny as a landing site for NASA’s Artemis III mission, which would be the first crewed return to the lunar surface since the Apollo era. “We have located several safe sites on the ridge that satisfy the goals of the IM-2 payloads,” Bussey says.

Artemis Aspirations

Exploring Shackleton is widely seen as central to any sustainable crewed lunar presence, whether via Artemis or another human spaceflight program, such as China’s, which is also targeting the crater. Peaks along the crater’s rim are almost always bathed in sunlight—perfect for energizing solar arrays—and also provide near constant line-of-sight telecommunications linkages with Earth, a must-have for any future long-term base camp.

But there’s more. Like many of its neighboring polar craters, Shackleton is home to permanently shadowed regions, or PSRs—sites not kissed by sunlight for billions of years.

Thought to be super chilly reservoirs of water ice, the volatile-rich regolith from PSRs could be harvested and processed into drinkable water—or, for that matter, into rocket fuel. But before such audacious feats can be attempted, mission planners must first get the “ground truth” by finding a way to safely and directly study or even sample a PSR’s frigid depths.

To that end, IM-2 is manifested to unleash Micro-Nova, a $41.6-million, NASA-funded small, deployable “hopper lander” to plunge in and out of PSRs.

“IM-2 definitely has the potential to provide key new data. Our hopper is carrying several instruments that will take the first surface measurements from inside a PSR,” Bussey says.

Failure Is an Option

Having a commercial capability demonstrated to successfully land on the moon will be game-changing, contends Clive Neal, a professor and a lunar exploration specialist at the University of Notre Dame.

“While the first attempt by an American commercial company to land on the moon failed, the very nature of these missions is that failure is an option,” Neal suggests. “But there are a number of questions that remain unanswered.”

Among them is how many failures CLPS can accumulate before NASA and its political taskmasters lose patience. Additionally, Neal continues, how are lessons learned from each mission shared amongst the CLPS vendors, if at all? Or does each company learn on its own? After all, this is commercial and competitive endeavor, he says.

The more recent IM-1 mission was notable, Neal says, given the “on-the-fly” adaptation the flight controllers had to do to get to the lunar surface and operate. “I do not see this mission as a failure but as a pathfinder that will inform the future of Intuitive Machines and the CLPS program.”

In the opinion of Scott Pace, director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University, the CLPS program is going well so far, notwithstanding the Astrobotic loss and the not-so-unqualified success of IM-1.

“Firsts are always difficult, and it takes experience to relearn flying to the moon,” Pace says. Almost as essential, he says, is organizational and cultural learning in which NASA and industry learn to work together in new ways.

“These missions are acquisition pilot programs as much as they are scientific and technology explorations,” Pace concludes.
