Targa 63 GTO - Yacht and Sea

Since its launch just over two years ago, Fairline Yachts has been winning awards for its new models. The new Targa 43, which recently launched at Cannes Yachting Festival, last week followed in the footsteps of its larger sister, the Targa 63 GTO, by winning the ‘Best Exterior Design’ Award at the World Yacht Trophies in Cannes – two new models, two awards, two years in a row gives deserved recognition for the hard work in phase one of Fairline’s business plan.

As the business enters phase two of its plans – which involves the launch of the exciting new F-Line 33, the launch of the Squadron 64 andcontinued investment in production, including the new Fairline Marine Park facility in Hythe, Southampton – the company announces the appointment of David Tydeman as its Executive Chairman.

David is well known in the UK marine industry and brings a wealth of relevant experience to the senior team – his deep knowledge of the UK boat building industry, the South Coast work force and its supply chain will help lead Fairline’s strategy for the new Southampton site. David is credited with taking Oyster Yachts into the superyacht sector, with 80% of all Oysters over 80ft secured under his leadership since 2008. He is well placed to guide the board with the investment decisions necessary for Fairline Yachts to enter the larger boat market.

Owner changes for Fairline Yachts

Fairline Yachts Factory in Oundle

The British shipyard Fairline Yachts is changing hands. The new owners announce an acceleration after the restructuring of the manufacturer of top-of-the-range motor yachts.

RiverRock takes over Fairline Yachts shipyard

The British builder of high-end motorboats Fairline Yachts comes under the control of an investment fund. RiverRock, which acquired a stake in August 2019, becomes the company's majority shareholder. The management team, led by Peter McNulty, remains in place.

Strengthening a pillar of British boating

Fairline Yachts, which was put under administration in 2015, was finally taken over in 2016 by two Russian investors, Alexander Volov and Igor Glyanenko. The latter remain in the capital, but indicate that they are refocusing on their core activities, which have been strongly impacted by the Covid crisis19 and recent oil price trends. "By taking a majority stake, RiverRock demonstrates its continued support and confidence in Fairline Yachts. This investment secures our financial future and ensures that we can continue to deliver on our long-term strategic plan for the brand," said Peter McNulty, Chief Operating Officer of Fairline Yachts.

Recent months have been marked by a restructuring of the Oundle-based yard and the announcement of 240 redundancies. The new owners feel that they have enabled the yard to achieve the right size to cope with the crisis linked to the Covid19 pandemic, while maintaining its place in the nautical industry. "The company has taken difficult decisions to adjust the business as a result of the extreme challenges linked to market conditions. This has better positioned the company and better aligned it with the strategic plan in terms of production and regional growth. This new investment by RiverRock gives us the capital and executive capacity to accomplish long-term growth plans," said McNulty.

Fairline Yachts’ Managing Director Russell Currie steps down after three years

  • Motor Boat Awards

Fairline Yachts has announced that Executive Chairman David Tydeman will take over the reigns from Managing Director Russell Currie

Fairline Yachts has announced that Russell Currie is stepping down from the role of Managing Director after three years in this position. Russell will return to leading the Fairline North Mallorca dealership.

During Currie’s three years in charge, Fairline Yachts has received the Motor Boat & Yachting Judges’ Special Award 2018 for ‘the best turnaround of a business’ and won two World Yacht Trophies for best exterior design of the Targa 63 GTO and Targa 43 OPEN. As Managing Director, Russell was also pivotal in the boat builder’s turnaround with the acquisition of the 200,000 square ft shore-side manufacturing site in Hythe, Southampton, which allows Fairline to build bigger boats than has been possible before.

Fairline’s Executive Chairman, David Tydeman, will take over the reins from Russell.

Fairline Yachts commented: “Over the past three years Fairline has reached its deserved place back on the world’s stage and we thank Russell for helping us get there – he is a true Fairline ambassador. As we enter the next exciting chapter in Fairline’s history, David’s highly relevant experience means he is extremely well-placed to build on the success of Fairline Yachts and take us into the next stage of our growth plans.”

Fairline is not the only luxury boat builder to announce changes in its management team. Sunseeker recently confirmed that CEO Phil Popham was leaving the company to join Lotus cars . He is replaced by Aston Martin Lagonda Chief Sales Officer and Vice President Christin Marti.

Russell Currie comments, “This time last year I said that our focus will be on creating high quality luxury motor yachts that boaters want to own and dealers want to sell. In that time over 85 boats have been sold, including ten during the first hour of this year’s London Boat Show.

“Key to our success has been getting our partnerships right. Combining the creative flair and style of Alberto Mancini, the engineering excellence of Vripack and the exceptional quality and British craftsmanship we already had at Fairline makes for an exciting combination, which has secured a very positive future for the brand. We have also worked hard to strengthen our dealer network, appointing new dealers in key global yachting destinations including Hong Kong, the Middle East, Malta, Argentina, Benelux and Denmark.

FAIRLINE_JAMES_LUXURY

“I am proud of all that has been achieved by Fairline over the past 12 months, but we aren’t resting on our laurels. We are committed to building on the success of 2016 with continued growth of the dealer network and through launching beautifully designed, handcrafted yachts with cutting edge innovations. The Fairline brand is celebrating its 50 th  year in 2017 and we are honouring the anniversary with a host of Golden Moments, including the launch of the highly anticipated Targa 63 GTO at Cannes Yachting Festival in September. There is plenty more to look forward to from Fairline!”
