About Charleston

Established in 1670, Charleston is packed with over 350 years of history. Some of this history, such as Fort Sumter, can only be accessed via Charleston's waterways. The city has a subtropical climate, ensuring warm weather almost year-round. The sunny summers and mild winters are perfect for boating, no matter the season. A plethora of wildlife calls our coasts home. It is not uncommon to have dolphins escort our charters throughout Charleston's waters.

About our master captains

Steve Woodard  has been around boats all of his life, owning his first sail boat at the tender age of 11. In 2008, he founded  Charleston Charter and Yacht, a family business. He proudly brought luxurious, customized, private charters to the Lowcountry for the first time. Steve has owned 13 boats throughout the years and has been a Master Captain 100 tons for 16 years. His skill, expertise, and experience in maneuvering a variety of vessels ensures you are in extremely capable and caring hands.

Paul Zobel was born in Charleston, spending much of his formative years on the waters around the area. He has had a captains license for over forty years, owning and piloting boats from Miami to NY for many of them. He was Captain of the Port for Dewees Island for ten years, piloting their ferry boats. Capt. Charleston Charter and Yacht is incredibly proud to have Cpt. Paul continuing work on the water with us.

Pete DeBoer is a native of Seattle, Washington and grew up in a boating family. Because he is a retired U.S. Coast Guard officer, his experience in operating boats and ships covers the spectrum from 14 to 378 feet. He has served and worked in the Pacific, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Bering Sea, and the Atlantic - from Trinidad to Martha’s Vineyard. Multitalented, Pete is a singer-songwriter that enjoys playing the guitar. His novel, Heave To , loosely parallels his 3 years of drug enforcement operations on a Charleston based cutter in the early 80’s. When Pete is your captain, it's guaranteed you will probably enjoy a sea story or two.

One of the greatest attractions is the city’s history commemorated with landmarks, its antebellum and later period architecture, carefully preserved for generations to admire, though not all the city’s history is admirable. Charleston was originally founded as Charles Town in 1670 with settlers brought in from Bermuda and Barbados in the West Indies, who brought their slaves with them! Originally located on the west bank of the Ashley River, it was abandoned ten years later for its present site, on a peninsula formed by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. From there it quickly grew to become the 5th largest city in North America by 1690, as its growth was propelled by trade and especially, the slave trade for labor to work the plantations of cotton, coastal rice fields, indigo for dye (in 1747) and other cash crops of the antebellum period.

Along with pine timber and deer skins from the interior and major cash crops, the slave trade brought immense wealth to Charleston. Powerful plantation owners and merchants wielded political control to protect their interests that resulted in conflicts with the Federal Government over the slave trade and led to the Civil War in 1861, with the first shots fired at Fort Sumter. The City of Charleston formally apologized in 2018 for its role in the slave trade, after CNN called attention to its history. Today, the city is known for tourism and has been consistently ranked Best City in the US over the past few decades by Travel & Leisure magazine. In 2013, T&L ranked Charleston as Best City in the World!

Charleston (which was renamed at the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783), encompassed only 4-5 square miles up to World War I, and then greatly expanded to include the six districts of Charleston. The Downtown Historic District is also known as “The Peninsula” and the loaded with historical sites, landmarks, museums, antebellum mansions, cobblestone streets, the Historic Charleston City Market landmark that is 2 city blocks of indoor market, Joe Riley Waterfront Park (8 acres on the Cooper River), historic Nathaniel Russell House, festivals, King Street and George Street for the renowned Lowcountry cuisine, to highlight just a few of Downtown Charleston’s attractions. History buffs can take the ferry to tour Fort Sumter where the Civil War began. The residential West Ashley District, bordered by the Ashley and Stono Rivers, was the original site of Charles Town and is now commemorated as Charles Town Landing. Johns Island District, the far western limits of Charleston, is bordered by the Stono River and Kiawah River and location of the legendary Angel Oak Tree, a southern live oak which is over 60 ft. tall with a wide canopy that covers 17,200 square feet and is estimated to be 400-500 years old. The James Island District is a popular residential area located between Downtown and the city of Folly Beach (location of the McLeod Plantation). James Island recently incorporated as its own town in 2012. The Cainhoy Peninsula District is the far eastern limits of Charleston and bordered by the Wando River and Nowell Creek. Also predominantly residential, the Daniel Island District is located north of Downtown between Cooper River and Wando River.

Charleston has had many cultural influences—southern US, English, French, West Indies and West African. The Gullah community of former slaves’ descendants has had a major influence on the early development of jazz (Louie Armstrong) and Geechee dances that influenced the 1920s dance craze (Charleston Rag). Multi-cultural influences are also evident in the cuisine of local seafood featured in gumbos, she-crab soup, fried oysters, Lowcountry boil, deviled crab cakes, red rice, shrimp & grits, with rice being a staple of many dishes. Charleston has many annual food events; major events are the Taste of Charleston, Lowcountry Oyster Festival, Charleston Food & Wine Festival and many more. Some other popular events are the Speloto Festival, America’s premier Performing Arts Festival founded in 1977 by Pulitzer Prize winning composer, Gian Carlo Menotti, MOJA Arts Festival, Charleston Fashion Week—held annually in spring in Marion Square, Holiday Festival of Lights, Charleston International Film Festival, and the Historic Charleston Festival of Houses and Gardens, to name a few.

Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina is the largest marina in South Carolina with 17,000 linear feet of floating dock space. Located on the banks of Cooper River, the marina has 450+ slips 33’ to 66’ in length and can accommodate vessels to 120’. The marina offers resort amenities, captains lounge, excellent facilities, pump-out, wi-fi, fuel, water, power. 

Cooper River Marina in Charleston County Park has easy access to Charleston Harbor and can accommodate vessels up to 150’ on its transient dock. Located on Shipyard Creek in North Charleston 2-miles north of Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and 15 minutes from Downtown. The marina offers long-term annual contracts for vessels up to 42’ in its deep-water slips on floating concrete docks and features email service, wi-fi, facilities, free parking, pump-out and more. There are no draft or height restrictions. Charleston City Marina is a membership Safe Harbor Marina with a “mega dock” of transient slips and floating concrete fuel dock. The membership wet slips can accommodate vessels from 30’ to 455’; 65’ beam x 18.5’ draft. There are also mooring balls available. The marina offers amenities such as wi-fi, power, water, cable TV, pump-out, fuel dock, ship’s store, marine services and a waterside restaurant. Another Safe Harbor Marina is the Bristol Marina on the Ashley River next to Charleston’s historic district.

This location offers easy access to open water and the rich culture of Charleston. Transient slips are 10’ to 55’ LOA and maximum 14’ height, 12’ beam, and 9’ draft. This marina’s amenities include fuel dock, wi-fi, cable TV, water, power, pump-out, dock boxes and more. (dockwa.com) Daniel Island Marina & Boat Club (Membership) is located on a bluff above Clouter Creek and features a 385’ face dock, 425 dry and 54 wet slips, fuel, ship’s store, outdoor deck bar and more. Transient slips are available, as well as annual contracts.

The Harborage at Ashley Marina provides a courtesy shuttle to Downtown Charleston. The main face dock can accommodate vessels to 125’ x 55’ height (due to bridge restrictions). The marina, located in the medical district of historic Downtown Charleston, has 230 wet slips. Amenities include wi-fi, power, water, fuel, facilities and more. As any local Charlestonian will tell you, don't let our weather forecasts fool you into missing out on a gorgeous charter or beautiful sunset! Our weather forecasts call for a 30-50% chance of rain nearly every day! If it does rain, it is usually only for a short period during a pop-up shower.

01 Will I get seasick?

Since we stay inside the harbor, protected from larger waves of the open sea, it is unlikely that you would get seasick. The water is calm and the boats are only subjected to large waves created by other boats. Concerned passengers could bring products that contain ginger, such as ginger cookers, or Ginger Ale because they have been known to help calm an upset stomach. Be sure to start taking ginger or any other sea-sickness medications the day before your charter for the best results. We recommend you stay away from the drowsy kinds. Recommendations are provided for informational purposes only. Please consult your physician with any questions regarding a medical condition.

02 Are your yachts safe?

Yes! Our yachts are clean, well-maintained, and fully insured for charter. All of our vessels meet or exceed safety requirements by the United States Coast Guard with onboard equipment that includes Type 1 Personal Flotation Devices (life jackets) for every passenger, an approved Sound Producing Device, fire extinguishers, flares, a VHF radio, & an approved throwable ring buoy. They also meet equipment, operation, and pollution prevention regulations established by the Coast Guard. Vessel Captains possess a valid license issued by the U. S. Coast Guard and undergo random drug screenings.

03 Can I bring more than 6 passengers?

Yes, on our Motor Yacht Kismet, which has been specifically designed to carry up to 23 passengers. You will find 23 to be pretty tight, we recommend keeping the maximum passenger count to under 20. 

The sailing yachts both are limited to 6 passengers, however, you can rent boat sailboats and take 12, having 6 on each boat.

04 Do children or infants count as a passenger?

Yes, they do. The United States Coast Guard considers every person, except for the Captain and crew as a passenger. Children require supervision by parents or guardians at all times and must be capable of remaining calmly seated for several hours. If you are bringing younger children, we recommend a charter length of no longer than 2 hours.

The Charleston Yacht Club was founded in 1934 to foster interest in water sports. The nine original members gathered at Adger’s Wharf, located at the foot of Tradd Street in the City of Charleston. In 1936, the Yacht Club was given land by the Halsey family. Today this location is near a tidal pool across the boulevard from the present George M. Lockwood Marina. The original building consisted of a dilapidated mule barn, but through the efforts of the members, it was made suitable for a yacht club. In 1961, the City Marina was moved to its present location, the Navy’s mine sweeper fueling facility. The Charleston Yacht Club was housed in a building on the main dock of the Marina. The membership soon outgrew the building and in 1985, construction began on the present facilities located on the City of Charleston property at the George M. Lockwood Municipal Marina.

The Club has continued to maintain its strong commitment to all boating activities. The Yacht Club has sponsored a Junior Sailing Program for 25 years and for many summers instructed over 100 young sailors, many of whom are leaders in the sailing community today. From this program emerged the Charleston Junior Yacht Club, whose membership consists of local youths active in all forms of boating. The Yacht Club sponsors many U.S. Sailing Association quarter and semifinal championship regattas and the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Associations Inshore and Offshore Championships. It has also hosted several national championships including the Mallory National Championship, Y-Flyer Nationals and Sunfish North Americans. The Charleston Yacht Club is a member of the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association and U. S. Sailing Association.

The Club’s Auxiliary consists of the spouses of Charleston Yacht Club members. It is a very active organization, contributing its talents and support to all aspects of the Charleston Yacht Club.

Yes. We use a system called Cognito to ensure that payment information matches the renter's identity. We also require renters taking out a captained boat to be at least 18 years old and on a bareboat to be at least 25 years old.

Is listing my boat on Boatsetter free?

Yes! Listing a boat is completely free. We only take a commission when your boat is rented. We only make money when you do!

What if I'm not comfortable having a renter drive my boat?

If you are not comfortable having a renter drive your boat, we have an expansive network of licensed and experienced captains. Once your boat is listed, you can filter through our network of captains and favorite captains in your area that you would like to operate your boat.
