How to Sail an RC Sailboat – Step by Step Instructions – 5 Minute Read

Sailing an RC sailboat is fun, but it takes some practice before you get good at it. I certainly needed it when I started! If you want to take your interest in RC model boats to another level, then you should consider learning how to sail an RC sailboat.

However, learning how to sail RC sailboats requires patience and perseverance. There are several things that you need to master before you can begin sailing. This article will teach you how to sail a radio-controlled sailboat.

How does a yacht sail, how are the sails and rudder of an rc sailboat moved, moving forward in a straight line, sailing into the wind, sailing away from the wind, final thoughts.

First, here’s a summary step by step approach to learning how to sail an RC sailboat:

• Consider joining a local club ( USA UK ) where you’ll find lots of helpful RC sailors and RC sailing events that will help you learn. You may even be tempted to get into RC sailboat racing. 
• In any event, choose a day with a gentle, consistent, light wind, preferably with the wind direction towards you, just in case you lose control of your boat.
• Find a medium-sized lake or pond, and avoid rivers or the sea, where there may be strong undercurrents. A local club will have a safe sailing area. Look out for areas that may have weeds or reeds, or shallows that could strand your boat. Remember to factor in the depth of the keel, which, on most model sailing boats, is significant. 
• Check you are able to sail in your chosen area – ie no prohibitions – and keep clear of swimmers, people fishing, full sized boat traffic, and wildlife.
• Avoid days when it’s busy in your sailing area with other modelers until your sailing skills are such that you can feel confident.
• Set up your RC sailboat on its stand, and check the rigging is as it should be according to the boat’s instructions. Ensure you have brought the boat battery pack charger, the batteries are charged, and you have spare AA batteries for transmitter. Turn on the transmitter, and test that the rudder control and sail servos are all working properly.
• Ensure you understand the basics of sailing, set out below, before launching your RC sailboat. Keep a keen eye on how your boat reacts to the wind, and be ready to react in turn by altering the sail angle to maintain the boat speed as far as possible.

The first thing you’ll need to know is how does a yacht sail? An rc sailboat sails just like a full size yacht. The wind energy pushes against the sails and flows over them, creating a difference in wind pressure on each side of the sail, which is translated to forward movement by the keel of the boat. Without the keel, the boat would be pushed in the direction of the wind.

To keep the yacht moving forward, the sail angle to the wind is adjusted depending on the position of the boat. Paradoxically, a sailing boat can sail into the wind, as well as with the wind. The only direction that can’t be sailed is with the wind directly in front.

The direction of the boat is adjusted by the rudder, which is at the back of the boat.

As a beginner RC sailing boat helmsman, many of these terms will be confusing to you, but they will soon become familiar.

The controls of an RC boat are explained in more detail in t his article , but basically, the hull (body) of the boat contains batteries that power servos which in turn move the rudder, the main sail, and the fore sail (the “jib”). The servos are controlled by a receiver, that takes commands from the RC transmitter which you hold in your hand. Here’s a short video that explains the transmitter controls:

How to sail an RC sailing boat

First, the basic skills. With the boat in the water, start with the wind half way between the front (bow) of the boat, and the side (beam). Keeping the rudder straight, trim (move) the sails so that they are close to the hull (close hauled) and the boat should move forward. If the wind is gusty, or very strong, move your transmitter control to let out the sails, spilling the wind, to keep the boat from keeling over.

If you’re sailing into the general wind direction, you’ll need to learn to “tack”, which involves turning the boat from a position where the wind is coming on one side of the bow, through the head-on wind, to end with the wind on its other side. This is achieved by moving the rudder to turn the yacht, whilst changing the angle of the sails to the wind – see the diagram above.

So the boat moves forward via a zig zag course.

As the boat turns into the wind, it slows, so this maneuver should be completed as quickly as possible, otherwise, the boat could get stuck with the sails flapping – this is called being “in irons”.

If the direction you wish to sail in means the wind is behind the boat, it is called running before the wind. In this case, turning the boat involves “jibing”, which is the opposite of tacking.

To change direction whilst running with the wind, move the rudder so the wind goes around the back (stern) of the boat and haul the sails in. As the boat comes round, the wind will move from one side of the sails to the other.

If this is not done smoothly, it could cause the sails to violently move in the opposite direction, possibly causing damage and maybe even capsizing the boat.

So those are the basics of learning how to sail an RC sailboat. As I’ve said above, the best way to refine your skills is to get out on the water and practice.

From assembling to sailing, the whole process is an experience worth having. What size servo for one meter RC sailboat?

Various factors can cause an RC sailboat to tip. Top among these factors is weather conditions . An RC sailboat can tip if it encounters a harsh wind along with heavy rainfall.

Other factors can be mechanical failures, which usually occur as a result of some parts of the RC sailboat failing, or get damaged. If the sailboat collides with another sailboat or obstacle, it may also cause it to tip, this would of course not happen with RC Submarines or RC underwater drones , but those are typically more costly.

What is the length of a certified racing RC sailboat?

Various racing RC sailboats come with different lengths. However, to enter some competitions they have to meet the certified length requirement of the regulating body. World Sailing is the body that governs sailing as a sport around the world and they have a standardized length for sailboats of different classes.

For racing RC sailboats, the certified length is 1,000 mm (1 meter). This is also regarded as the hull length of the boat.

How do I get a permit to sail RC sailboat in central park?

Sailing your boat in central park is a fun activity, and people have been doing this for over a hundred years. So, it is normal that residents, as well as visitors, would want to partake in this activity.

You can get permits to store your sailboat in central park that is in charge of the park. There have rules and regulations that govern sailing in the park. How to paint an RC sailboat?

It is usually fun to see RC sailboats with impressive patterns and colors different from their original manufacturer design. Most of these sailboats are products of extra work put in by the owners to identify their boats as well as give it an appealing aesthetic view of their choice. There is no harm in wanting to add some spice to your RC sailboat, however, it is important to know how to go about it.

There are various ways people take to paint their sailboats, however, learning people who already have experience in painting sailboats because this will save you a lot of stress, and ensure that you have for yourself a lasting design.

The first thing to do is to draw the pattern of whatever design you want on your boat, then tape areas that need taping using a masking tape that pulls off cleanly after paint without distorting the paint lines. How do RC sailboats work?

The traditional sailboat does not work like the conventional boat, and this is the same for RC sailboats. That is why is essential to understand how they work before setting out to sail.

Unlike the conventional sailboat, all you have to do to control this sailboat is to use the radio control system where is a feedback mechanism between the transmitter and the receiver. There are two major components of the sailboat that are responsible for steering and moving the sailboat forward; these respective components are the rudder and sail trim.

RC sailboats utilize wind energy to move the boat on water. It does this by redirecting the wind or capturing a sizable amount of wind, enough to propel it forward. To accomplish this, the sailor has to ensure that the sail trim is adjusted properly in the direction that allows it to capture enough wind and move forward. The sail servo controls the degree to which a sail will swing using lines that are attached to the sail. The shorter the line, the fewer the degrees the sail is allowed to sway, and vice versa.

The rudder on the other hand is used to steer the sailboat in different directions. There is a servo that actuates the rudder of the sailboat to accomplish this after the radio system of the sailboat has received an input signal from the controller.

Understanding how a normal sailboat works may be the key to you having a long-lasting time with your RC sailboat. Also, it is essential to always go for products with good quality to prevent avoidable disappointments.

Sarasota Model Yacht Club

Welcome - About Us

The Sarasota Model Yacht Club got its start in Sarasota in 1996.  Our club sails the American Model Yachting Association-sanctioned one-design Soling One Meter R/C , RC Laser, DF65, DF95 and (during the winter only) IOM model yachts. The club meets six (seven times a week when the IOM sail) times per week for practice and racing. We sail at the  Nathan Benderson Park at  the West Lake on Athletes Drive.   The West Lake is off of Honore at Athletes Drive. 

    The Soling 1-Meter kit-based model is a pleasure to sail. As a one-design, it is an ideal introduction to model yachting, yet it provides a  competitive boat for the best of veterans as well and is available from  “ Boatyard John ” (our club builder). 

    The RCLaser is factory-built ready to sail and available at  intensitysails.com  

We also sail the Dragon Force (DF) DF65 and the DF95 RC boats. 

The DF 65 is one of the fastest growing class of RC sailboats in the U.S. The boat has earned this distinction by being a great one-design sailing boat while being the least expensive ready-to-sail boat on the market. At around $350 for a boat with radio and receiver and about 3 hours of assembly and you're on the water.    

The DF95 is the fastest growing class in the USA and is near Ready-to-Sail in a kit form from  Radiosailing.net  or from “Boatyard John”. 

    All skill levels are welcome, from neophytes to crusty old salts! You will find that our members can be very helpful in getting you involved with this great hobby. Come on out to watch the hard-fought races or join us for practice and racing.  

The Soling One Meter (S1M) :  This S1M the largest class in the U.S. and Florida. We sail Solings Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Race Captains rotate throughout the year. Craig Collemer is the Race Captain.

The RC Laser :  This is the largest RC class in the world. We sail Lasers on Friday. Steve Lippincott is the Race Captain.

The DF65 and the DF95 :  These are the newest and fastest-growing restricted one-design class in both Florida and the U.S.  

We sail DF95's on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Bill Hendrickson is the Race Captain. The DF65 fleet sails Monday and Wednesday.  Rob Wucki is the Race Captain. 

IOM The IOM Class is considered a Development Class by the AMYA. 

The International One Metre class is the fastest-growing class in the world. This class is distinct and different in purpose from the US One Meter class, and complements the International Marblehead Class as a simpler, less expensive boat. The International class has a one-design rig, and has minimum weights on the keel and overall, and restricts the hull material. The net effect of these differences is that the typical cost spiral of lighter weight, and more expensive materials and manufacturing processes, is arrested. This allows amateur designers and builders a chance to design and build with little concern that they are building in a disadvantage due to weight. This is a feature not found in any existing AMYA class and is one of the reasons that the class is so popular around the world.  We sail IOM's on Sundays in season.  John Stryhn " Boatyard" is the Race Captain.

 The club races at Benderson Park on the West Lake.  The West Lake is located at the intersection of Honore and Athletes Drive, Sarasota Fl.

How can I get a S1M, RC Laser DF65 or DF95?

    Soling 1M:   We have a member called “Boat Yard” who has used/refurbished S1Ms’ for sale. You can also buy a new ready-to-sail boat from John. John's email [email protected] . 

     RC Laser:   A new RC Laser is available at intensitysails.com  at a cost of less than $600 with 3 complete rigs.

     DF95:  A new DF95 can be purchased from Radiosailing.net in kit form for $345, up to $610, which includes a transmitter and receiver, B rig, B sails, LiPo battery, custom stand and sail numbers for A and B sails.  The boat can also be purchased and assembled by club member  “Boatyard” .  The assembly takes 3-4 hours. 

   DF65:  The Fleet at SMYC is unique in that it caters to those unable to walk long distances while racing due to shorter courses then the other classes. The boat is available at http://radiosailing.net/. The boat can also be purchased and assembled by club member  “Boatyard”

Dues are $75/year and a signed liability Waiver for SANCA is required.   SMYC is also a member of the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA).  The AMYA has many resources for Individual members. Their web site is www.theamya.org.

Remote Control Sailing In Newport

Brad Read looks out his office window across Newport Harbor’s Brenton Cove, observing how the puffs fan across the racecourse that’s spitting distance from his ­public-sailing operation’s docks. Small pink and green buoys he set earlier outline the miniature racecourse. Alongside him at his desk is his 37-inch remote-controlled Dragon Flite 95 racing sailboat, Hatey-Eight , a nod to the Beantown puck-slinger David Pastrnak. The color scheme, of course, is black and gold.

Outside Sail Newport’s headquarters, competitors arrive one by one, raceboats in hand, mylar sails flapping in the breeze. They are the co-founders of Sail Newport’s Thumb Yachting Guild: race programs director Nick Ewenson, pro sailor Anthony Kotoun and round-the-world storyteller Amory Ross. There’s Henry DiPietro, the flock’s shepherd, and his wife, Janet, the scorekeeper. They too have their colorful and decorated vessels in hand. Others eventually straggle in. Today there might be six sailors. Next week there will be 10, and then 15, 20—and so the guild’s roster grows week by week, almost day by day.

It’s now less than a year since the postman first delivered these remote-controlled yachts to Read’s office, and the unofficial fleet’s membership has blossomed to nearly 70. He has never seen a one-design fleet grow so rapidly, but why is obvious. “It’s been an amazing study in fleet building,” Read says. “The product is good, it’s fairly inexpensive, and it has just taken off.”

It was Ewenson’s idea to start a remote-controlled racing fleet as a COVID-19 ­lockdown sailing fix last spring. The Dragon Flite 95, designed by John Tushingham and Buzz Coleman, and built by Joysway Hobby International, checked all the boxes. National Sailing Hall of Famer Bob Johnstone, who’d started fleets in South Carolina and elsewhere, helped kick-start the action with a shipment of 20 boats that arrived in July of last year—all essentially spoken for. Soon they were racing off Sail Newport and across the harbor at New York YC, drawing the curiosity and attention of the city by the sea’s sailing elite. When most of the 11th Hour Racing team crew—in town training on their IMOCA 60—got in on the fun, it went up another notch.

Consider the Newport fleet another chapter in the Dragon Flite 95′s amazing success story. It’s all thanks to North American distributor Chuck LeMahieu, who started selling them five years ago. In April, he moved into a 2,000-square-foot fulfillment warehouse in Texas to meet the US demand for what is considered the world’s fastest-growing one-design class. “I know it sounds crazy, but I knew this is what was going to happen,” LeMahieu says. “Traditionally, the radio-sailing target market has been the hobby enthusiast, and the boats that were out there were not appealing to the big-boat racing crowd for various reasons [cost and complexity]. I’ve been doing this for 30 years and never saw anything like the Dragon Flite. That’s why I threw every penny I had to get it going.”

Since 2015, LeMahieu has sold 6,000 of these $500 ­battery-powered yachts, lately to household names like Paul Cayard, Ed Baird, Bruce Farr, Taylor Canfield and, yes, Read’s brother, Ken, who is now a member of the guild.

“It’s fun to race sailboats, and that’s what these capture,” LeMahieu adds. “We’re appealing to the hardcore racing guys because the good guys are also accomplished bigger-boat ­sailors. One of the cool things that has happened at Lakewood YC in Texas, for example, is they got some of the guys that used to just sit at the bar because they couldn’t sail anymore. It’s not just toy boats—it’s another fun sailing activity for the club.”

Chicago YC has hundreds of them, and California YC, in Marina del Rey, recently bought 75, to list but a few other clubs ordering fleets. There are already big fleets in Florida and Texas, but the new hotspots, LeMahieu says, are the Northeast, California, Oregon and Wisconsin. It’s no wonder his friends call him the Johnny Appleseed of RC racing.

DiPietro, who took charge of organizing the guild’s racing, says its first regatta was in late July, and with racing three nights a week, they got in more than 130 races, a lot of those in front of the esteemed New York YC. “There were people down on the lawn having drinks. It was great entertainment for them and a good draw for the members. And, of course, liquor sales went up every day we were there.”

Guild racing has continued through the fall and winter on Saturdays and Sundays, no matter how frigid or how many layers are required, but Newport’s fleet is at a tipping point of sorts. What was once informal is getting serious. Bigger numbers, stronger interest and varying skill levels need to be addressed. There’s also a lot of rubbing in the racing, and an honor-system approach to the rules that works for some but not others.

“We do have a lot of world-class sailors, but even for them the boats can be humbling,” DiPietro says. “Some over-­tinker; some struggle with depth perception. I’m an OK sailor but not an OK racer, and that’s what seems to make the difference.”

Read’s observation is that good sailors make good RC racers because the same key principles apply: fleet tactics, reading the wind and knowing the rules. The simple adjustments of the Dragon Flite, he says, allow you to keep your hands out of the boat once it’s tuned right. “What I’ve found is that these little boats supply so much learning, especially the tactics, and the laughs-per-dollar quotient is off the charts. Your pride does eventually get beat up.”

And he’s speaking as well for his brother, Ken, the round-the-world racer, America’s Cupper and big cheese at North Sails, who showed up for his first day of racing in early March and won a race or two after only a few minutes on the joysticks. The streak didn’t last long.

While the guild has plenty of young’uns and now more women, Read’s wife still calls his obsession “old-man sailing,” but he argues it’s more than that. “Without it this winter, there would have been this huge void for me,” Read says. His winter jam is normally hockey and coaching, but with COVID-19, there was none of that. “This was a way to be outside and safely sailing with friends. It was therapeutic.”

The T37 RC Racing Sloop is 37 inches long, 5 feet high, and has a total weight of 4 pounds with the keel ballast casting weighing 2 of these pounds. It is a fully sanctioned one design class in the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA).The T37 balances perfectly and sails fast. She tacks effortlessly and will sail in winds gusting up to 20 mph. As with all of our model sailboats, the heavy ballast casting at the bottom of the keel makes it impossible to tip the sailboat over. All fittings on this RC sailboat are solid brass or high grade marine 316 stainless steel. The hull is very light and strong, built from 1/8 inch mahogany plywood. The sails are genuine nylon spinnaker cloth; this is the same material that is used on full size sailboat spinnakers. The mast can be removed in less than one minute for easy transport.

The T37 RC Sailboat Kits come with everything you will need to build the boat, including the marine epoxy and all of the RC gear  (except for batteries)  for sailing the boat. CLASSIC THUNDER

As pioneers of a growing 1:10 Scale electric hydro class, the goal is to continue to duplicate real unlimited hydroplane racing as closely as they can. Since their inception in 1993, they have not only tried to recreate the boats from several eras, but to encourage a spirit of fun, respectful competition and camaraderie within their membership.

ERCU is a club that was formed in the Seattle area by a dedicated group of individuals who enjoy building and racing models of some of the great and not-so-great unlimited class hydroplanes from the past and present.

In 2003, Electric Radio Controlled Unlimiteds (ERCU) came into existence, as an organization modeled after RCU, and the younger club has quickly become the world’s largest fast electric scale hydroplane club.

EUGENE RC BOATS

Eugene Rc Boats has been around for 29 years racing boats in Eugene, Oregon. They race primarily hydros, monos, and tunnel hulls. Powered by gasoline, nitro and electric engines. They run many classes and will do what they can to fit you and your boat into one of them. They have everything from entry level racers to hardcore experienced boaters. It’s a very friendly atmosphere and members always help one another out. Any one is welcome to come check it out .

NW ROOSTERTAILS

During the 1960’s and 70’s, the primary site for radio control boat racing was Green Lake in Seattle. Shortly after the 1973 NAMBA nationals , the city of Seattle changed its policy and no longer allowed any form of boat racing on Green Lake.  At about that same time, the need for fill dirt during I-5 construction north of Marysville created two small lakes that became Gissberg Twin Lakes County Park .

Paul Roth an  Everett RC racer saw this and along with Ed Fisher, Roger Newton and Ron Erickson  checked it as a possible RC race site, liked what they saw and went to Snohomish County and worked out terms for model boat racing. The first race was held in late 1973. Thus began the long history of Northwest Roostertails and RC racing at Twin Lakes.

Over the years with support from Snohomish County, the site has been improved and upgraded. It is a great venue for racing.  They run many classes of boats. If you have one, bring it to an event and they will find a class for you.  Great fun, great friendships and great racing is what Northwest Roostertails is about. Come join in the fun…you’ll be glad you did.

The Puget Sound Fast Electric Model Boat Club has been an organized NAMBA club since 1996. They welcome all racers of any age and skill level.  The club prides itself on being a family oriented club.  Longtime members are more than willing to help newer members with boat set up and driving skills.  Their goal is to make fast electric model boat racing a fun experience for everyone.

PUGET SOUND MODEL BOAT CLUB

The Puget Sound Model Boat Club(PSMBC) was started in1969 to provide a model boat club for radio control model boat enthusiasts living in the South Sound area.   In 1972, the PSMBC gained access to Lake Waughop at Ft. Steilacoom Park in Lakewood when the State of Washington leased what had previously been a farm tended by residents of Western State Hospital to Pierce County. Radio controlled model boat racing was the first organized activity in Ft. Steilacoom Park. Today Ft. Steilacoom is the largest regional park in Pierce County with baseball and soccer fields, a dog park, a RC flying area, covered shelters, and hiking trails.

The PSMBC hosts 4 District 8 Points races and club races that include the Pumpkin Scrambles in October, Turkey Shoot in November, and Frostbite Follies in December. Members of the PSMBC have won numerous national championships, set records in heat racing, 1/16 mile straightaway, and 2 lap oval.

RC UNLIMITEDS

Founded by Roger Newton in 1974, R/C Unlimiteds is the original, and most highly regarded organization dedicated to 1/8th scale radio controlled unlimited hydroplane racing in the world. RCU races fast electric , and nitro, and gas class boats, each finished in exacting detail to represent the full sized original. The boats are capable of speeds of nearly 60 mph and the racing is serious. They race on ponds all over Washington State throughout each summer, from April through September, culminating in the Gold Cup, raced on Lake Chelan.
