$1 million 80-foot luxury yacht sinks off Florida coast, 2 rescued

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ( WNCN ) — Two people were rescued just before a $1 million luxury 80-foot sport yacht sank off the coast of Florida Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The incident was reported just after 11:35 a.m. about 3 miles off St. Augustine Beach, a news release from the Coast Guard said.

The operator of the Atlantis, an 80-foot sport yacht, said the vessel hit an object in the water and was sinking.

World War II sunken Navy sub found

The Coast Guard sent out a boat crew to assist and coordinated with St. John’s County Fire and Rescue, which soon arrived and plucked both people from the yacht.

The Atlantis yacht appears to be a 1999 or early 2000s model of the Sunseeker Predator 80.

A larger Sunseeker Predator was featured in the 2006 James Bond film “Casino Royale.”

A 2001 Predator that is 5 feet shorter than Atlantis, which sank Saturday, is listed for sale for $975,000.

Sunseeker Predator 80 yacht, built in the United Kingdom, can accommodate up to six guests in four staterooms, with two crew members aboard.

Atlantis has two Caterpillar diesel engines and can reach a top speed of 44 kn, or 50 mph, according to data from Boat International.

A data sheet about Atlantis says the vessel is in the top 5% by speed in the world.

After Saturday’s rescue, a hazard to navigation was broadcast to alert mariners about the yacht, which could cause damage to other vessels, according to the Coast Guard.

The owner of the Atlantis will arrange for a salvage of the vessel, the Coast Guard said.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

Crews have suspended the search for a boater who went missing after a 23-foot vessel capsized in Lake Erie.

According to the Associated Press, the U.S. Coast Guard had previously rescued two people from the same boat, which was partially submerged near the Perry nuclear power plant around 2 p.m. on July 6.

A third man was found unresponsive and was later pronounced dead at the hospital, the Associated Press reported.

Crews responded after a local fire rescue boat crew reported finding coolers and other debris floating in the water. A Lake County dive team eventually located the sinking boat.

After the three rescues, officials learned that a third man had been in the water when the two people, a man and a woman, were rescued.

A helicopter and a boat crew kept searching but the effort was suspended Saturday night after 10 hours, officials said.

Holiday weekends are typically busy for the U.S. Coast Guard — and this Memorial Day was no exception as two people were rescued Saturday from their sinking vessel off the Florida coast.

The Jacksonville sector of the U.S. Coast Guard received a distress call from the operator of “the Atlantis,” an 80-foot motor yacht, at 11:37 a.m. on May 25, who said their vessel struck an object and was taking on water, 3 miles off St. Augustine Beach.

In a news release on May 25, the Coast Guard and St. John’s County Fire and Rescue announced they had safely removed the only two people who were aboard the vessel.

Yachts between 70 and 90 feet are considered “large” by those in the industry , and depending on the range of amenities they offer, their value can range anywhere from $6 million to $15 million or more.

According to authorities, the owner of the vessel will arrange salvage and the cause of the incident is under investigation.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to St. John’s County Fire and Rescue for their invaluable assistance during this case,” Senior Chief Petty Officer Ricardo Santacana said in a news release. “With the weather improving and mariners heading out onto the water, it’s imperative for everyone to verify the presence of all necessary safety equipment aboard their vessel. Superyacht sinks off the coast of Italy

By Megan Hinton

The moment a 140ft superyacht sunk off the coast off Italy was captured on camera after the huge ship was hit by a storm.

Listen to this article

According to the Super Yacht Times , the vessel called My Saga was travelling from Gallipoli in Turkey to Milazzo in Italy and was spotted flying a Cayman Islands flag.

Four passengers and five crew were rescued before the ship submerged into the sea and no injuries were reported.

The Italian coast guard said in a tweet: "In recent days, the Guardia Costiera of Crotone coordinated the rescue operations of passengers and crew of a 40m yacht, which sank 9 miles offshore of Catanzaro Marina."

They added: "Administrative investigation launched to identify the causes."

According to reports, the captain sent out a distress call late at night during a storm because the ship was taking on a significant amount of water.

The superyacht, which was built in 2007, has room for up to 12 guests on board alongside accommodation for 7 crew members including the captain.

It comes after a British man died and six other people were injured when a luxury yacht smashed into rocks in Sardinia three weeks ago.

The 63-year-old, who has not been named but is understood to be the owner of the 70ft Magnum-type motor yacht involved in the crash, was killed in the accident around 8.40pm yesterday near Porto Cervo, in Sardinia.

It is thought the vessel - carrying a total of seven people - was swerving to avoid another boat near a group of islands known as Il Nibani that lie just off the coast when it hit the rocks and half-sunk, La Stampa reports.

Authorities say 2 rescued, 1 dead, 1 missing after boat capsizes on Lake Erie

  • Copy Link copied

CLEVELAND (AP) — Authorities have suspended the search for a missing boater in Lake Erie after rescuing two others and pulling another person from the water who later died.

The U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes station said a distress call was received just after 10:30 a.m. Saturday, which authorities said directed them to an area off a Painesville communications tower. A helicopter was launched from the Coast Guard air station in Detroit and a boat crew from the Cleveland harbor headed out to search, but an hour later the helicopter was diverted to a separate rescue in the lake off Ashtabula.

Shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday, a local fire rescue boat crew reported finding coolers and other debris floating in the water off the Perry nuclear power plant. Divers with the Lake County dive team also found a capsized and partially submerged 23-foot vessel.

The Detroit crew, after refueling, rejoined the search and rescued one person in the water while the fire department boat crew rescued another person. The two, a man and a woman, were wearing life jackets. The Cleveland harbor crew rescued another man, who was unresponsive and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Image

After the three rescues, officials learned that a third man had been in the water. Officials said it wasn’t immediately clear whether that person had been wearing a life jacket. Another helicopter and a boat crew kept searching but the effort was suspended Saturday night after 10 hours, officials said.

The Detroit helicopter crew diverted earlier had rescued five people in the water who were clinging to a cooler in Lake Erie waters about 10 miles (16 kilometers) off Ashtabula after their 22-foot boat had been swamped by a wave, officials said. The five were taken to the northeast Ohio regional airport, and officials said none had any medical concerns.

Luxury 80ft sports yacht sinks off Florida coast triggering coast guard rescue

The US Coast Guard rescued two people this weekend after their luxury sports yacht sank off the Florida coast.

The operator of the Atlantis, an 80-foot yacht. alerted the US Coast Guard on Saturday morning that the boat had struck an object and was taking on water.

The yacht was three miles off the coast of the picturesque city of St Augustine, Florida when the call came in.

Pictures showed the stern of the vessel sinking beneath the waves before it finally tipped into a vertical position and sank further.

St John’s County Fire Department rescued both people on board, according to the US Coast Guard.

An alert was subsequently issued for nearby mariners about the partially submerged yacht, which was still in the water as of late Saturday.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to St. John’s County Fire and Rescue for their invaluable assistance during this case,” Senior Chief Petty Officer Ricardo Santacana, from the US Coast Guard, said in a statement.

“With the weather improving and mariners heading out onto the water, it’s imperative for everyone to verify the presence of all necessary safety equipment aboard their vessel.”

“This ensures that responders, as demonstrated in this case, can swiftly locate you and render assistance when an emergency arises,” he continued.

Sports yachts of a similar size to Atlantis are typically worth upwards of $1m, according to International Yacht Sales .

The Independent has contacted the US Coast Guard for comment.

Earlier this year, a pod of orcas managed to sink a sailing yacht near the Strait of Gibraltar. However, that vessel was much smaller, measuring roughly 50ft.

The March incident was the latest in a string of orca-related yacht sinkings in the region. Marine experts at the time said they believe a subpopulation of about 15 orcas known as “Gladis” is carrying out these attacks.

Two people were rescued on Saturday from an 80-foot yacht that sank three miles off the coast of St. Augustine Beach in Jacksonville, Florida .

The person driving the $1 million boat told the Coast Guard over the radio that their vessel 'struck an object in the water and was taking on water,' according to a press release .

The radio mayday was made at 11:37 a.m. The Coast Guard coordinated with county authorities and 'nearby good Samaritans' to assist in the rescue.

A marine unit from St. John's County Fire and Rescue reached the sinking boat first and got both people out safely. One of the boat's passengers sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital, Boat International reported.

'We extend our heartfelt gratitude to St. John's County Fire and Rescue for their invaluable assistance during this case,' said Senior Chief Petty Officer Ricardo Santacana, a Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville command duty officer.

Santacana continued: 'With the weather improving and mariners heading out onto the water, it's imperative for everyone to verify the presence of all necessary safety equipment aboard their vessel.

'This ensures that responders, as demonstrated in this case, can swiftly locate you and render assistance when an emergency arises.'

Additional photos from rescue teams show that the boat took on water and eventually went vertical before slipping beneath the water.

The ship that sank, called 'Atlantis,' and has a top speed of 45 knots, or about 51 miles per hour.

It's unclear what 'object' the yacht hit, but there are at least seven reefs off the coast of St. Augustine Beach, where the vessel ultimately sunk.

The owner of the capsized vessel will arrange to have it salvaged as authorities investigate what caused the crash.

At least 89 bodies have been recovered off the coast of Mauritania after a migrant boat capsized this week, the West African country's state news agency and the head of a fishing association said.

The Atlantic migration route from the coast of West Africa to the Canary Islands, typically used by African migrants trying to reach Spain, is one of the world's deadliest. Summer is its busiest period.

Mauritania's state news agency said on Thursday that the coast guard had recovered the bodies of 89 migrants who were bound for Europe on a boat that was carrying 170 people.

It said that nine people, including a five-year-old girl, were rescued.

Mauritanian authorities could not be reached for comment.

Yali Fall, president of the fishing association in the southwestern town of Ndiago, said on Friday the death toll stood at 105 and that locals had been burying bodies retrieved from the coast since Monday.

"For three days, we buried the dead whose bodies were found," he said.

An unprecedented nearly 5,000 migrants died at sea in the first five months of 2024 trying to reach the Canary Islands, migration rights group Walking Borders said in June.

At least 89 people dead as boat capsizes off Mauritania

Dozens missing after fishing vessel left from border of Senegal and Gambia with 170 believed to have been on board.

Boats in the water at a beach, in Barra on December 5, 2019, after at least 62 people died on December 4, 2019 when their makeshift vessel capsized off the coast of Mauritania

At least 89 migrants and refugees bound for Europe have died, with dozens still missing, when their boat capsized off the coast of Mauritania, according to state media.

The fishing boat capsized on Monday about 4km (2.4 miles) from the West African country’s southwestern coastal city of Ndiago. The Mauritanian coastguard recovered 89 bodies and rescued nine people, including a five-year-old girl, said the state news agency on Thursday.

At least 11 people dead after two shipwrecks in the mediterranean sea, ‘you have to do it’: refugees in tunisia undeterred by lampedusa shipwreck, some 300 children drowned trying to reach europe so far this year, survivors: ‘greek coastguard was next to us when boat capsized’.

Survivors quoted by state media said the boat had departed from the border of Senegal and Gambia with 170 people on board, which would mean 72 are now missing. A senior government official confirmed the information to the AFP news agency.

The boat capsized due to strong winds and high waves on the dangerous Atlantic route , known for its strong currents. Migrants travel in overloaded, often unseaworthy, boats without enough drinking water.

Earlier this year, the European Union promised Mauritania, a former French colony, financial support worth 210m euros ($229m) to tackle migration and provide humanitarian aid for migrants.

The agreement came amid a steep increase in the number of migrants setting off from the country towards Spain’s Canary Islands, located about 100km (62 miles) off the northwest coast of Africa.

More than 5,000 people died while trying to reach Spain by sea in the first five months of this year, or the equivalent of 33 deaths per day, according to Caminando Fronteras, a Spanish charity. The vast majority were on the Atlantic route.

Deadly land routes

Increasing numbers opt to travel by land, with deaths of people crossing perilous routes in the Sahara presumed to be double those occurring at sea, according to a new report from the United Nations refugee and migration agencies and the Mixed Migration Centre research group.

“Refugees and migrants are increasingly traversing areas where insurgent groups, militias and other criminal actors operate, and where human trafficking, kidnapping for ransom, forced labour and sexual exploitation are rife,” said the report, released on Friday.

The report, researched over three years, said that conflict and instability in countries including Mali, Burkina Faso and Sudan are driving a rise in the number of journeys towards the Mediterranean.

Migrants leave after Tunisian police dismantled a makeshift camp for refugees from sub-Saharan African countries in front of the UNHCR headquarters in Tunis.

In total, 1,180 people are known to have died while crossing the Sahara desert between January 2020 to May 2024, but the toll is believed to be much higher, said the report, which drew on testimonies from more than 31,000 people.

This year alone, more than 72,000 people have taken land routes to the Mediterranean, with 785 dying or going missing during that period, according to figures from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

Libya has emerged as a primary transit point for people fleeing war and poverty. In March, authorities discovered a mass grave  containing at least 65 bodies in the country’s western deserts.

Algeria, Libya and Ethiopia were considered by respondents as the most dangerous transit countries.

The report tallied hundreds of cases of organ removals, some migrants having agreed to them as a way to earn money.

“But most of the time, people are drugged and the organ is removed without their consent: They wake up, and a kidney is missing,” said UNHCR special envoy Vincent Cochetel.

Why Trump’s weird rant about boats, batteries and sharks matters

yacht sinks off hillarys

By Steve Benen

Those of us who keep an eye on Donald Trump ’s public appearances have come to expect certain rhetorical staples at the former president’s rallies. We know, for example, that the Republican is going to lie about a great many things. We know he’s going to complain about journalists covering the event. We know practically all his comments will be filtered through a lens of grievance, self-pity and self-aggrandizement.

But once in a while, Trump will say something so strange , it’s difficult to know not only what he’s talking about , but why in the world he said it in the first place .

Take yesterday, for example.

At a rally in Nevada, the presumptive GOP nominee told his followers that “they” are pursuing a policy that would mandate boat manufacturers use electric engines. In fact, Trump, who has long demonstrated a habit of sharing the details of conversations that only occurred in his mind , told the local audience that he’d spoken to an official at a boat company in South Carolina, who told him, “It’s a problem, sir. They want us to make all-electric boats.”

The former president added that the South Carolinian, who probably doesn’t exist, went on to tell him, “The problem is the boat is so heavy it can’t float. Also, it can’t go fast because of the weight.” Trump proceeded to share a variety of details about the practical limitations of requiring boat manufacturers to rely exclusively on battery-powered engines.

Before we proceed, let’s note for the record that (a) this conversation probably never happened in reality; and (b) there is no policy in place requiring “all-electric boats.”

If we were to stop here, this would simply be a story about Trump telling an unbelievable tall tale about energy policy. Alas, we cannot stop here.

It’s a difficult quote to summarize, so I’ll just go ahead and quote the former president directly:

“So I said, ‘Let me ask you a question, and [the guy who makes boats in South Carolina] said, ‘Nobody ever asked this question,’ and it must be because of MIT, my relationship to MIT —very smart. He goes, I say, ‘What would happen if the boat sank from its weight? And you’re in the boat and you have this tremendously powerful battery and the battery is now underwater and there’s a shark that’s approximately 10 yards over there?’”

At this point, Trump apparently decided to pursue this tangent in earnest. “By the way, a lot of shark attacks lately, do you notice that, a lot of sharks?" he asked. "I watched some guys justifying it today. ‘Well, they weren’t really that angry. They bit off the young lady’s leg because of the fact that they were, they were not hungry, but they misunderstood what who she was.’ These people are crazy. He said there’s no problem with sharks. ‘They just didn’t really understand a young woman swimming now.’ It really got decimated and other people do a lot of shark attacks.”

And then he shifted back to his original story.

“So I said, so there’s a shark 10 yards away from the boat, 10 yards or here, do I get electrocuted if the boat is sinking? Water goes over the battery, the boat is sinking. Do I stay on top of the boat and get electrocuted, or do I jump over by the shark and not get electrocuted? Because I will tell you, he didn’t know the answer. He said, ‘You know, nobody’s ever asked me that question.” I said, ‘I think it’s a good question.’ I think there’s a lot of electric current coming through that water. But you know what I’d do if there was a shark or you get electrocuted, I’ll take electrocution every single time. I’m not getting near the shark. So we’re going to end that.”

Author Steven King noted last night , “This is like listening to your senile uncle at the dinner table after he has that third drink.” (I was also reminded of a classic Grandpa Simpson harangue .)

In terms of commentary and analysis, I’m not even sure where to start, though it’s worth emphasizing that Trump first started worrying about electrocuted boaters several months ago in a speech in Michigan . Those remarks, however, didn’t include any sharks.

We could also talk about the fact that Trump doesn’t really have a “relationship” with MIT, except for the fact that he had a relative teach there many years ago. We could note that Nevada is land-locked, making this an odd campaign message. While we’re at it, we could also spend some time explaining that boaters are not, in fact, electrocuted if their battery-operated boat sinks.

I’m also tempted to put in a call to the Trump campaign, asking whether the candidate also believes the shark would similarly be electrocuted if his scenario were real, but I have a hunch I wouldn’t get a response.

But there’s one overriding detail that I found myself thinking about after watching the clip. It was the final six words: “So we’re going to end that.”

It occurred to me that if voters return Trump to the White House, he would likely deploy a group of officials to work on the boat/battery/shark issue and expect them to report back on their progress.

Three months into Trump’s presidency, Politico had a report on the internal turmoil in the White House. “If you’re an adviser to him, your job is to help him at the margins,” one confidante said at the time. “To talk him out of doing crazy things.” Four months later, Axios had a related piece , citing a half-dozen “dismayed” senior administration officials, exasperated by the then-president’s dangerous instincts. “You have no idea how much crazy stuff we kill,” one said.

In a second term, this would almost certainly be worse.
