Take advantage of our attractive deposit insurance for Skipper and Crew. It is easy to forget that a chartered yacht is not our own among the fun and freedom a cruise on dream waters evokes. Understandably, the yacht owner secures themself against unpleasant surprises and charges a deposit. Whether it's a sail breaking, the yacht gets a few scratches, or the slightest damage after your return from the dream vacation, the owner will partly or wholly retain this deposit. In this case, you are protected by charter deposit insurance.

Details for the charter deposit insurance

It is covered in the partial or total withholding of the charter deposit by the owner/charterer due to loss or damage caused by the private policyholder or the crew. Insurance benefit: The compensation of the damage in money does not exceed the insurance sum. The deductible is 10 % of the deposit, at least 100 EUR. If the regatta risk is included, the deductible is 15 % of the deposit, at least 300 EUR.

Simple pricing model

To determine the insurance premium for our charter deposit insurance, only two questions are necessary:

  • Is it covered for a voyage or an annual coverage?
  • How much is the deposit sum? (for an annual coverage the most expensive planned deposit sum)

Cover for a cruiseAnnual coverage
Deposit of up to 3.000 €8 %15 %
Deposit of more than 3.000 €7 %13 %
Minimum premium75,- €100,- €
Regatta riskplus 15 %plus 15 %

We also charge a one-off policy fee of 15,00 EUR including the statutory insurance tax.

Sample calculation:

A voyage with a deposit of 2.750 € without regatta risk: 2.750,- € x 0,08 = 220,- € The insurance premium to be paid is 220,- €. If the regatta risk shall be included, the following calculation is valid: 2.750,- € x 0,08 x 1,15 = 253,- € A voyage with a deposit of 900 € without regatta risk: 900,- € x 0,08 = 72,- € The calculated premium is below the minimum premium. That's why the bonus is 75,- € .

Charter Insurance

Yacht charter insurance.

yacht charter deposit insurance uk

Explanation Deposit Insurance:

Basically all charter bases insure the yachts of their fleets with both third party liability insurance and hull insurance. Simply put, the liability insurance covers damages to other boats, port facilities or strangers. The comprehensive insurance covers damages of the chartered yacht – for hull insurance, there is always a deductible. For this excess that is not covered by the hull insurance, the charterer pays a security deposit.

We always recommend to secure this deposit with a deposit insurance. In some cases, the charter companies offer an own insurance with a “damage waiver”: Buying the non-refundable damage waiver, charterer pay less refundable deposit. But with most charter bases, a deposit insurance with an insurance company is recommended.

Other recommended charter insurances are:

– Skipper’s third party liability insurance

– Charter cancellation insurance – just in case the skipper or crew members become ill

– International travel health insurance, eventually accident insurance

Travel Cancellation Insurance and Travel Health Insurance are recommended as well for guests travelling with Crewed Charters / Luxury Yacht Charters.

Pantaenius has developed comprehensive insurance cover for your charter cruise.

 We offer Security Deposit insurance

Protect your security deposit by buying ‘security deposit insurance’ with PlainSailing.com and EIS insurance - insure a security deposit of up to €2,500 from just €250, or up to €4,000 for around €350!

WHAT IS A SECURITY DEPOSIT?  When chartering a yacht or catamaran, you’ll need to put a security deposit on a credit card (usually somewhere in the region of €1,000 - €4,000) - similar to leaving a security deposit when you hire a car.

If the boat comes back fine, then happy days, and they return your deposit in full, but if the boat returns in a worse state than it left the marina in, then the yacht owner can charge you for any damages and deduct it from your security deposit.

With brand new yachts costing upwards of £200k, and cats even more, then even a small amount of damage can quickly add up. You obviously have no intention of crashing or damaging the boat, but mistakes can become very expensive very quickly.

The maximum that you can be charged is the security deposit, but what if you can’t afford to pay that much in the event of a collision?  Well, there is ‘Security Deposit Insurance’ you can get for that – and we can help you arrange it.

PlainSailing.com and EIS insurance

You pay the security deposit as normal, but if you’re charged any deductions for damage caused, then you can make a claim for a reimbursement from EIS insurers (subject to an excess). We help arrange insurance for you through EIS, who are marine insurance specialists, and who will reimburse claims within 14 working days, though usually more like 3-5 working days.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?  Security Deposit Insurance to cover security deposits up to €2,500 costs €250, upto around €350 to cover security deposit of up to €4,000.

WHAT DOES IT COVER?  This covers almost any deductions from your security deposit (including the outboard motor and anything else covered by your security deposit), with the exception of items which were lost (e.g. lost fenders) or intentional damage.

WHAT IS THE EXCESS?  In the event that you have to make a claim, there is an excess of 10% of the security deposit.

WHEN CAN I BUY IT?  You can add charter security deposit insurance when making a booking, by logging in to your PlainSailing.com account, or by contacting us vie email or LiveChat. You can add it to your booking up to 48 hours before your charter starts – just ask our team :)

HOW DO I MAKE A CLAIM?  In the event of needing to claim, send us all the receipts, and we'll sort it out with EIS for you, and get the money back in your bank account as quickly as possible.  You’ll need to provide copies of the charter contract, evidence of the security deposit deduction paid (credit card receipt / sales voucher) and detailed statement of costs from the charter company (invoice, cost estimate) and signed by the skipper, as well as detailed photographs of the damage.

 Not booked with PlainSailing.com?

If you're a PlainSailing.com customer, then please get log-in or get in touch to add Security Deposit Insurance to your booking, and we'll sort out all the admin and add it to your final balance - easy.  If you're not a PlainSailing.com customer, then you can still get security deposit insurance from EIS by clicking here , and then clicking 'Deposit insurance for charter yachts' from the list on the right hand side - but you'll have to do your own paperwork, I'm afraid.

Chartering Your Boat

Many boat owners choose to charter their craft to help with mooring costs or simply to keep the boat in working order whilst they are away. But like letting out your home or even your car, you’d expect your property to be looked after and for your insurance to cover you for any incidents which happen beyond your control.

Chartered Yacht

You can charter your boat in two ways – either with or without skipper and crew (referred to as a bare boat charter). In this article we will focus on bare boat charters as this scenario is higher risk and requires more care on the part of the yacht owner.

If you do intend on charting your boat, you should ensure that it’s in good shape before you do so. Depending on the type and location of your craft you’ll need to get ‘coded’. Most craft will be subject to Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) coding which your craft must obtain before you’re able to charter it. If you own a narrow boat or other inland craft however, you will be subject to the rules and regulations of the Canal & River Trust in England & Wales or Scottish Canals if operating in Scotland. Similarly, some local areas (The Solent for example) will impose their own coding.

MCA coding will certify that your vessel has been thoroughly checked for seaworthiness and that all the required safety features on board are present and in good working order. These include first aid kits, lifesaving equipment and distress signals (e.g. flares).

Who should you allow on your boat?

It’s always down to your discretion who you let loose with your boat. However, we would recommend you stick to the following tips to ensure that your potential customers are competent, honest and sensible.

One or more of your charterers must be RYA coastal skipper qualified - This is an insurance requirement as well as a requirement of many port authorities

Do not take cash payments - Taking card payments or bank transfers will allow you some security should someone abscond with your craft

Lay down the ground rules – Particularly if you’re going to allow groups on board, you should enforce ground rules on subjects like alcohol early

Enforce point three by having your charterers sign a “Bareboat charter agreement” – This will protect you should the charterers be responsible for any damage or negligence on their part. See a template for a bareboat charter agreement .

Ensure charterers have their own personal injury cover – it is not your responsibility to insure against injuries sustained by charterers aboard your craft. It is therefore essential that charterers hold their own personal injury cover.

Chartered yacht insurance requirements

In order to charter your yacht you’ll need to have a private and pleasure policy with a bareboat charter extension. In this policy extension you’ll find the relevant conditions which apply to you and your charterers.

The basis of this extension covers off several of the points mentioned above. Charterers must be RYA coastal skipper qualified , you must not take cash payments and you should take down the charterer’s passport number, driving license number and current home address.

The RYA agreement mentioned above also stipulates the responsibilities of both the operator and the charterer. Section seven of the RYA charter agreement explains in detail that the operator will insure the boat against fire, collisions and indemnity of at least £2million and also makes it very clear that the operator shall not be liable for any personal injury sustained by the charterer whilst on board.

It is recommended that whether you’re an operator or charterer you read these documents and have an understanding of your responsibilities.

The right insurance cover for your trip

We recommend that you close deposit insurance, skipper liability insurance and trip cancellation insurance.

Deposit insurance

On every trip, minor or major damage can quickly occur, a brief lack of attention is often enough. Therefore, a deposit must be paid on site for each trip.

If you have closed deposit insurance, in the event of damage, the deposit paid on site will be retained until you have settled the damage through your insurance company. You will then receive your deposit back in full or in part, depending on the insurance conditions.

If the insurance company refuses to pay or if you haven't closed a deposit insurance, there can be discrepancies and blame within the crew, which in retrospect gives a wonderful holiday a negative aftertaste.

We recommend the Pitter deposit coverage

In order to enable you to have a carefree trip, we have created our Pitter deposit coverage. You pay a one-time fee based on the size of the booked yacht, which covers damage to the yacht, damage to the sails (mainsail and genoa) and damage to the dinghy including the outboard engine. PDF Pitter Yachtcharter deposit coverage 2024, 837 KB

Your advantages when taking out the Pitter deposit coverage:

  • No deposit payment required on site
  • No claims settlement with the insurance company, we take care of that
  • Valid at selected bases

Skipper liability

The skipper is liable for damages that he has culpably caused to others with his present and future assets – without limitation – this is your risk! YACHT-POOL includes gross negligence and defense against unjustified third-party claims

Eine Luftaufnahme einer Motoryacht, die durch das Wasser rast.

Yacht hull insurance is comprehensive cover for the yacht owner. It covers total loss as well as partial damage to your own yacht and offers protection against financial losses that may arise from events such as theft, fire or natural disasters.

Eine Person, die auf einem Jetski im Meer fährt.

As a pioneer and trendsetter in water sports insurance, YACHT-POOL sets a new standard in jet ski insurance! The YACHT-POOL JETSKI insurance is a new highlight of our product development that covers all essential risks for jet ski owners.

About Yacht-Pool

The yacht-pool story.

Dr. Schöchl initially wanted nothing to do with insurance. However, he was greatly annoyed by the poor conditions at the expense of the customers of the family business Sunbeam Yachts, which is why he wrote the YACHT-POOL hull and liability conditions, thus becoming the initiator of all-risk coverage . A fundamental innovation in boat and yacht insurance. They far surpassed traditional individual risk coverage in terms of customer orientation!

Since insurance conditions could not be patented, they were gradually copied by competitors over the years and are now in the market. At YACHT-POOL, policyholders were grouped into a “POOL” – hence the name YACHT-POOL, which was intended to speak with one voice and provide a counterweight to insurance companies and their teams of lawyers, to which the individual was always inferior.

In the charter sector, Dr. Schöchl was the first to recognize the high personal liability risk of the charter skipper, which he considered unacceptable. He formulated and wrote the corresponding skipper liability conditions, thus launching the protection of charter skippers. He is therefore considered one of the inventors of Skipper Liability Insurance.

But it didn’t stop there. Further specialized insurances such as charter deposit insurance, charter cancellation insurance, and a range of other coverage concepts were developed. In professional circles, YACHT-POOL thus became a pioneer in charter insurance and trendsetter for water sports insurance.

Moreover, YACHT-POOL evolved into a kind of “ombudsman” for questions that went beyond insurance solutions. This includes the quality seal “CHECKED & TRUSTED Financial Security,” which provides charterers with better guidance in choosing economically stable charter agencies and fleet operators, thereby minimizing the risk of insolvency.

Über Yacht-POOL - Dr. Schöchl referiert über die Haftung des Skippers.

Equally important was the development of the “FairCharter Contract” – a standard contract of terms and conditions for charterers designed to protect the charter skipper from problematic “voluntary liability agreements” where no insurance coverage applies.

The international associations EBI (European Boating Industry) in Brussels and ICOMIA (International Council of Marine Industry Associations) in London adopted this contract as a model for international and official general charter standard conditions.

With its initiatives, YACHT-POOL became a pioneer, innovator, and initiator, setting the trend and thus …

… much more than just an insurance company!

Ein Segelboot liegt im Wasser neben einer Broschüre.

Yacht-Pool in the trade press

Report from the trade magazine Boote 1.2024 – The clear conditions of YACHT-POOL’s charter fair contract convince the leisure boating lobby! Unclear conditions and toxic clauses in charter contracts could soon be a thing of the past, or at least the exception. The European and global associations of the leisure boating industry, EBI (European Boating Industry) in Brussels and ICOMIA (International Council of Marine Industry Associations) in London, recognized the importance of this topic for nautical tourism, a conflict-free charter business and, last but not least, for the reputation of the entire industry.

Several meetings were held with the presidents of the national associations of charter companies and charter agencies to find the best possible general terms and conditions. The choice fell clearly on Yacht-Pool’s Charter-Fairvertrag, which was already available in all relevant languages and represented a fair balance of interests between charter companies and charterers.

The online platform “myrentboat.com” has not forwarded customer payments and is now leaving skippers out in the cold. A textbook example of what you should bear in mind when chartering online.

With new seals of approval, the insurance broker wants to provide guidance and contribute to loss prevention.

As the charter season draws to a close, our wealth of experience (and that of many a charter skipper) has once again been enriched by many a bizarre incident. Most of the charter trips went smoothly over the water, some were particularly “adventurous”.

Following the “Checked & Trusted” seal of approval for charter companies, the insurer Yacht-Pool is now making people sit up and take notice with two more labels: A seal for skippers and one for marinas are in the works.

After almost 20 years as exhibition manager of Boot Tulln, Thomas Diglas joins the insurer Yacht-Pool. In an interview with , he looks back on his time at the Austrian Boat Show and explains the reasons for his change of job and industry.

What is the added value of full insurance coverage?

Taking out insurance when booking any type of boat charter offers important guarantees.

In general, the main objective of those who rent a boat is to have fun by spending time in lightness. So why not immediately eliminate a whole series of worries that may be encountered before and during your sailing trip? Examples are the loss of the security deposit already paid or part of it due to the cancellation of the trip due to an unforeseen event or the interruption of the charter already in progress for family, health, or work needs.

The main advantage of taking out an insurance policy is to be reassured, that is to guarantee the peace of mind of renting a boat and enjoying your holiday without worries.

yacht-charter-insurance-coverage

Let’s go into detail, what risks can be included by subscribing to an insurance package?

It is essential to have complete insurance coverage and in this context, the Pantaenius yacht insurance offers various possibilities. So, depending on the level of coverage chosen, your package can include the following insurances:

  • Trip cancellation ;

In addition to covering expenses due for possible cancellation of the rental, any outward and return travel expenses of the skipper and crew members are also covered or, if the trip is interrupted after it has already begun, also the additional costs incurred for the return trip and the residual part of the rental cost. The charter costs are then reimbursed for the remaining unused days.

Finally, with an additional premium, it is possible not to apply the policy deductible and also add the possible insolvency of the agency or the rental operator.

  • Medical expenses abroad ;

In addition to the costs for medical treatment, medical treatment, and hospitalization, the health insurance for travel abroad reimburse the transport by ambulance in the country of origin or the costs of repatriating the body in the event of death.

  • Accidents ;

Accident insurance provides coverage in the event of death and disability, including some guarantees that are generally not provided by general accident insurance. The skipper and crew are insured during the private use of the rented or leased yacht, the tender and equipment for water sports as well as land trips lasting up to 48 hours.

  • Security deposit ;

The deposit insurance covers the financial risk in the event that the lessor retains the security deposit, in whole or in part, regardless of whether this is justified or not.

With the additional “Security Deposit Plus” premium, it is also possible to ensure the security deposit in the event that this sum is not sufficient to cover any expenses incurred.

  • Civil liability of the skipper and/or crew ;

Skipper’s civil liability insurance covers damage caused to third parties during the use of the chartered boat or its tender by the skipper and crew members. Are included in the insured risks also damage to other vessels and to port facilities or the dock. Are included even damage resulting from gross negligence on board the boat and not covered by the lessor’s insurance. Covers for the cancellation of charters, confiscation, hotel expenses, transportation, and financial losses.

Any recommendations or otherwise for the above? Something similar to insurance4 carhire etc Cheers!

Well-known member

You haven't given us enough information to give you a specific recommendation. We usually take out the waiver, but they always have constraints. Didn't help us when we "lost" our dinghy + outboard overnight. We still had to pay a "recovery fee" when it was returned by the police. Or when we bent our anchor...

I paid quite a lot of money to a German insurance company for skippers insurance for a Croatian charter. Long story but our bow anchor scraped another yacht. Insurance quite useless. We were told that we would have to get the other owner to sue our charter company who would then need to withhold our deposit to have a valid claim. All this would need statements from owners of both boats and the port “Captain “ all to be done in the few hours before we flew home. It would have been impossible to organize so I paid(probably too much) to the other owner to avoid my boat being arrested. Post return correspondence with the insurance company could be described as a polite eff off.

Yachtsmans insurance policies sometimes covers this, there are specific travel insurance policies for charterers as well.

One example would be Force 9 insurance from Ouest Assurance Force 9 : INSURANCE EXCESS REPURCHASE, CANCELLATION AND ASSISTANCE - Ouest Assurances Plaisance You would need to read the small print to see if it suits you. There may be an excess applicable but you can reduce your risk. I have no experience of making a claim.
