Description:

STRIDER is the most popular of our trailable catamarans as it offers a good compromise between speed, accommodation and low cost.

Striders are very good sea boats and have competed successfully in tough offshore races. A racing version, the Turbo , with wider beam, increased rig size, rotating mast etc. is available for those who's aim is to race at the highest level or who sail in a very light wind area.

The 4 berth interior layout is as on the Shadow .

Richard Woods design plan difficulty?

After quite a few months of reading/research I've decided that I want to build a smallish cruising catamaran. It seems like it would be the best way for me to acquire the kind of boat that I would like to have. I originally liked the idea of the Wharram designed tiki 30, but I think that the Richard Woods Gypsy 8.5m has better accommodations in a slightly smaller package. Plus (almost) standing headroom!! My question to anyone with experience in Woods Boats would be, how difficult are the plans to understand for someone with little knowledge in woodworking/boat building? I understand some of the basics of woodworking from high school shop and have read and watched a few videos on plywood stitch and glue, but those can only be so useful. The Wharram plans seem to be extremely easy to understand for first time builders, some places even described them as "as good as a boat building coarse". My father is a life long carpenter and would be able to help me through the odd snag or difficulty but I don't want to rely on him to heavily. Thanks for any input

Richard tends to be pretty high level, but very thorough. But he usually sends you build pics. And I recommend you consider joining bateau.com or a builder's forum. Bateau is a s&g site mainly. I post often on my build blog and answer other builder's questions on my foam Wood's build. And I would be happy to be a resource. Many things in a foam build are similar to s&g. Richard is also pretty decent with responding to emails; although that can get to be too much. His boats are special. I encourage you to go for it. He also has a builder forum with a handful of guys that can respond.

I am sure that the plan's for Richard's Gypsy should be easily understandable. I wanted to do the same as you, about 15 years ago - I bought a set of study plans for Gypsy but then other things happened / got in the way, and this project never got off the ground. In many areas on Richard's website www.sailingcatamarans.com he posts random selections of construction plans for his boats - they appear to be very clear and concise to me, but you should have a good look through all the free study plans on offer on the site so that you can form your own opinion. Here is a link to the 'new' forum mentioned by Fallguy - woodsdesigns https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/woodsdesigns/index.php

Thank you for your interest in my Gypsy design. A large number have been built over the years. It is a simple boat to build, nearly all flat panel. Either using foam sandwich or ply hulls. You can also build round bilge hulls but that's only recommended if you like boat building. I built the first Gypsy for my own use so know the boat well. That was nearly 25 years ago, under a new owner it sailed to Morocco last year. Several others have made ocean crossings. So the design is well proven and will last a lifetime. The Gypsy plans comprise 7 large (ie A1 or A2) sheets plus 60 A3 (legal) sheets of more detail drawings and photos. One the left menu of my website is a link to some free plan sheets which will give you an idea. A studyplan costs GBP13 and you can also buy partial plans at a greatly reduced rate. These include all the building plans except the lines plans and offsets. So you cannot build the hulls but can see how to build the boat. And in the case of Gypsy you can actually build the central cuddy, beams and cockpit before buying the upgrade to full plans I hope that helps. Incidentally Dan Fall is building the prototype of a modified design, so his plans are not as developed as the Gypsy plans We will be in the Neuse River/Oriental area in early December if you want to meet up Richard Woods of Woods Designs www.sailingcatamarans.com
I do apologize. I had planned to edit my post and remind the fellow I am building the first demountable Skoota. It is not a simple boat to build, but Richard accomodated my needs since I want to get the boat to the west coast at 17' beam. This is not the same as a boat built many times like Gypsy. Richard has been incredibly gratious and kind and patient with me and my build is going well. I reiterate. If you are able to build a Gypsy; it will be a great thing. Building a boat is an incredible experience. Building a Wood's design even better, because Richard loves sailing enough to really design great sailboats and those are proven designs. The ply Gypsy would be much easier to build and cheaper by far than foam.
Thank you all for your responses, I'll definitely check out the other builders forums. A few days before posting I purchased the study plans, however my computer was to small to see them well. I opened them on a friends larger screened desktop last night and they seemed very clear. I've decided it's definitely the boat I would like to build. Hopefully within the next few weeks I'll be able to purchase the plans and start sourcing materials.

Janus sailing catamaran

Janus is a 4 berth trailable sailing catamaran built in sheet plywood. However, don’t be deceived by Janus’ simple dory shaped hulls (which make it a very easy boat to build). It has a lot of internal room for its length and a surprisingly good performance. It is a safe, seaworthy boat, several have made English Channel and North Sea crossings (over 100 miles non stop).Trailering and assembly are easy as the flat bottomed hulls remain upright unsupported. Janus is the best choice for the less experienced builder or sailor and for those who prefer simplicity. An owners comment: “After we’d reach the bridge we were broad reaching and went very fast indeed. We realised that Richard Woods designs great boats. For what is more fun than leaving with two monohulls of the same size and a few miles further on all you can see are a couple of dots behind?”We also have a number of other trailable sailing catamarans from 20 - 25ft, see www.sailingcatamarans.com for more details.

Pre-owned boats

Due to popular request we now offer this page for those who want to buy and sell their multihull. This web site is seen by thousands of people every month who are specifically interested in sailing catamarans, so it makes sense to advertise here and reach serious potential buyers.

A quote from someone who listed their boat with me: "He paid the price I was asking which I'm pleased about. I only had the boat advertised on your site and was getting an average of about one email a week. I originally thought it could take 2years to sell, what with the economic climate and all. Also it is an unusual boat but it does attract a lot of attention."

" These adverts clearly get viewed by enthusiasts. We needed a quick sale and this advert generated interest from 3 parties in the first week.  John (Belfast)"

The cost to advertise your Woods Design is £50  and the advert will run until sold.  Please use the button below to order an advert

Or the cost is £75  if it is a non Woods Design boat. Again,  the advert will run until sold .  Please use the button below to order an advert

Boats wanted and gear for sale/wanted adverts can be put on my Forum pages. These adverts are free.

After purchasing an advert please email us with full details of your boat, including up to 4 photos.  Please note, you should send advert as plain text and photos as small separate jpegs. Doc and rtf files will not be accepted as they take too long to reformat. Thank you.

NOTE:  I have kept some old adverts online so you can get a guide to prices

Elf Catamaran built 2019

Oran Mara - Woods Elf 26 - Built 2019 – Ashore at Ardfern Yacht Centre, Argyll, Scotland £25,000

woods catamaran designs

Oran Mara is the most recent updated design by Richard Woods and was professionally built by Elf Catamaran SRL in 2019 to Richard Woods specification. She was rigged and fitted out by Ardfern Yacht Centre in Argyll, Scotland, and has been cruised occasionally and day-sailed on the west coast of Scotland.

The Elf has a large open deck with accommodation for four. The high-roach mainsail offers an easily managed but powerful rig with slab-reefing, assisted by lazy-jacks and bag. Roller reefing controls the genoa, and there is no need to leave the cockpit for reefing either sail.

woods catamaran designs

The low aspect ratio keels have a draught of 0.65m and allow access to many shallower anchorages and easy beaching. A Yamaha 9.9hp outboard (long shaft) is fixed to the centre of the aft cross beam and provides ample power.

The boat is suitable for short / single-handed sailing. She is stable, light, very responsive on the helm, fast, and points high for a catamaran. In moderate winds, speeds of 10knts are easily reached. The accommodation and equipment are suitable for short cruises and day sailing.

Hulls and Decks The hulls are hand laid up in GRP to Woods Designs specified layup with white gelcoat finish. The hull topsides and decks are of sandwich construction using PVC contour foam. The gelcoat, resin, glass fibre and foam used are Lloyd’s certificated. Hulls There is a single berth with stowage beneath at each end of each hull. There are 4 single berth cushions with covers, a chemical toilet in the starboard hull, and a draining wash basin. Cockpit Open rigid cockpit. Forward safety net. Anchor and sail lockers are incorporated into the forward end of main crossbeam. GRP 2 gas bottle in a GRP housing Seat to starboard side. Tiller steering, S/S tiller bar and two tiller extensions. Mast and Rigging Fractional rig with Plastimo roller reefing Z-Spar Aluminium Mast and Boom. Fully battened mainsail with 2 reefs and lazy jacks with bag and cover Main and jib halyard cleats, 2 Barton winches and 2 winch handles  Electrics Two batteries for engine and domestic use. Solar panel with regulator Interior lighting Int 12V sockets and USB charging points in both hulls. Navigation lights Electric panel with switches and fuse

Sails (by Boatshed Wales) The mainsail is fully battened with adjustable tensioners at the luff end. Two deep slab reefs are fitted and the sail is lowered into a bag guided by lazy-jacks. The mainsheet traveller extends widely across the stern and can be used to flatten the sail in stronger winds before reefing. A kicking strap is also provided to help flatten the sail and control the boom. The genoa is hoisted with an external halyard on Plastimo roller reefing gear controlled by a line leading to the port mast beam and a cleat. The sheets are led to an adjustable track on the cockpit floor to Barton winches on each side and secured on cleats. Sail and fender lockers are built into the mast beam.

Electrics Two x 12v batteries in the port side mast beam locker. These are charged automatically by the engine and by a small solar panel on the port side mast beam locker. One battery serves the engine starter, the other supplies all navigation lights, depth sounder, cabin lights, fixed VHF radio, the autopilot, charging sockets and 2 x bilge pumps. The switch panel is fixed inside the port hull by the companionway. There are two electric bilge pumps, one in each hull, connected to roving hoses that can be used wherever needed. The Lofrans Dorado anchor winch is supplied by the domestic battery and has its own control unit and circuit breaker in the port mast beam cockpit locker.

Ground Tackle There are 2 anchors. The bower anchor has 30meters of 6mm chain spiced to 30 meters of multi-plait rope. It is lowered and recovered using the electric anchor winch, or by hand. The second anchor is a CQR pattern and provided with a rope cable only.

Instruments A portable Silva steering compass is provided. Compass holders are fixed to each hull by the main hatches, allowing the helm to move the compass on each tack to see the heading. A depth sounder is fixed to the mast beam underneath the mast foot, and the transponder is fixed to the port hull skin, ahead of the forward berth. A wind direction indicator is fitted to the mast head.

VHF Radio An ICOM fixed DSC VHF radio is fitted under the switch panel in the port hull.

Tiller Pilot The Autohelm 2000 tiller pilot is fixed to a bracket on the port hull connected to a waterproof socket inboard. The pilot can be controlled with the remote control from either hull.

Accommodation There are 2 berths in each hull, with storage lockers underneath the mattresses, and in the port hull forward berth, there are additional storage nets. USB charging points and reading lights are fixed next to each berth. A chemical toilet is provided in the starboard hull. There is a sink / stove to the side of the worktop. Gas is piped to the burner. Water is not plumbed to the sink but a drain is fitted and empties above the waterline. Water containers are stowed on deck and at the head of the port aft berth for ready use. In the port hull, a folding table is fitted for chart work and / or food preparation / dining. Food and crockery stowage is under the worktop.

Strike 18 in Florida

Living in Florida, I chose to build the open deck version of the Strike 18.

As advertised, this boat is light and nimble, making it a joy for single handed sailing. The boat has seen three sailing seasons only on fresh water. With low aspect ratio keels, sailing where dagger boards fear to go is not a problem, as well as easy beaching.

woods catamaran designs

The boat has plenty of room for you and a few of your friends. An extra storage compartment was built into the rear of the main hull.

The outriggers are Quattro 16 amas built for this boat. The entire boat was built new using Okoume marine plywood, Douglas fir solid framing. All plywood surfaces covered with 7 oz. Fibre Glast fiberglass and epoxy.

woods catamaran designs

The spars and rigging were designed and built by US Spars. The sails, supplied by UK Sailmakers have standard rigging. The main sail 150 S.F., the jib 50 S.F.

The boat includes a Suzuki 2.5 H.P. four stroke outboard motor. The boat is trailered on a Magic Tilt aluminum trailer.

woods catamaran designs

Swingcat an Eclipse 32

Swing Cat is a performance cruising catamaran with a bridgedeck. It is a Richard Woods Eclipse design measuring  9.9m in length and 5.9m on the beam.  It is built of solid wood and marine plywood and sheathed in biaxial glass fibre cloth impregnated with West-system epoxy resin.  The performance aspect of the boat comes from having daggerboards (rather than low aspect ratio keels), outboard motors for auxiliary power (rather than two inboard engines) and laminated tri-radial sails including a drifter (on a bowsprit) and a spinnaker.

woods catamaran designs

Swing Cat has beaching keels and kick-up rudders so is happy drying out in tidal creeks.  Its wind generator and 6 solar panels charge 500Ah of battery storage which provides electrical energy via 12V DC and 240V AC distribution.  One can live off the grid with a high level of creature comforts while remaining connected to the shore via computers and mobile phones (if desired!).

When on shore power in a marina, full use can be made of a microwave, toaster, electric kettle and electric heating.

The interior accommodation consists of a double cabin in the stern of each hull and single cabins in the bow of each hull, giving sleeping accommodation for 6.  The bridgedeck cabin provides comfortable seating around a large table and access to both hulls.  A cockpit awning, together with cockpit cushions, provide further shady seating in the cockpit as well as shelter from any shower.  The trampoline forward of the bridgedeck, between the hulls, is a favourite place for sunbathing, watching the sun go down, or for watching dolphins on passage.

woods catamaran designs

The hulls and cabins are fully lined and insulated ensuring a cool interior on hot days and a cosy interior on cool days.  When at anchor on cold evenings a wood burning stove is available.

Swing Cat is designed to have minimal impact on the environment.  The sources of renewable energy means there is no need to have a fossil fuel generator.  There is an electric motor for the tender.

woods catamaran designs

There is no discharge of sewerage from the boat and no conventional holding tank.  An ecological toilet ensures the separation of liquids from solids with both being captured, and disposed of, separately.  The absence of urine in the solids tank, together with the use of mechanical ventilation, ensures that using the heads is a pleasant experience!

Swing Cat also has a grey water tank for cruising in environmentally sensitive areas. This tank retains washing-up and shower water until it is OK to discharge it – for example when dried out on a beach, grey water can be discharged only when the tide is in and the boat is afloat.

woods catamaran designs

With forward-looking sonar, broadband radar, AIS Tx & Rx, VHF radio, Echomax radar reflector, electronic chart plotter, full size chart table and safety equipment, including lightning protection, Swing Cat is fully equipped for creek crawling or bluewater sailing.

Swing Cat was built by its owner starting in 2011 and was launched in 2016.  The website documenting the build and its sea trials can be found at  www.swingcat.co.uk  .  The reason for the sale is that the owner and his family no longer have as much time for sailing as they did previously.

iYacht unveils 55-foot solar electric performance sailing catamaran built from scrap metal

Avatar for Scooter Doll

German yacht design and engineering studio iYacht GmbH unveiled a 55-foot solar-electric sailing catamaran called the Hu’chu 55. Its makers describe it as “without a doubt one of the most sustainable and compelling challenges undertaken so far.” Built from over 90% scrap metal, this vessel offers an admirable design lesson in circularity.

iYacht GmbH is a German yacht design studio with offices in Hamburg and Kiel, led by CEO Udo A. Hafner. Over the last twenty years, iYacht’s team of 11 engineers, designers, and naval architects has completed over 400 marine projects, from initial design sketches to “Conformite Europeenne” (CE) marking.

For its latest project, iYacht was commissioned by actor, producer, and environmental entrepreneur Daniel Roesner to develop a solar electric sailing catamaran designed, first and foremost, with circularity in mind. The result is the Hu’Chu 55 – a project iYacht’s CEO described as one of its most ambitious to date:

We have designed and engineered a dozen multihulls in recent years, but the Hu’chu 55 represents a significant leap forward in terms of sustainability and circularity. Daniel had a very ambitious vision, and we guided him in turning it into a feasible project.

iYacht brought all hands on deck from both its design offices to bring Roesner’s vision to life, utilizing a unique recycled aluminum developed explicitly for the Hu’Chu 55.

Solar electric sailing

Hu’Chu 55 solar electric sailing vessel is ultra-sustainable

According to iYacht, the Hu’Chu 55 was built using recycled and recyclable materials, including aluminum, developed by the actor/ catamaran owner with the help of a major aluminum manufacturer. The material comprises over 90 % aluminum scrap from discarded license plates, road signs, cosmetic cans, and automotive and construction manufacturing, without a single kilogram of primary metal.

The result is a solar electric sailing catamaran built from material that’s one-eighth of the market’s average footprint in CO2 emissions. Roesner also requested that other sustainable materials, including natural fibers, reclaimed wood, and recycled cork, be incorporated throughout the vessel.

While the Hu’Chu 55 is a sailing catamaran at its core, it is supported by solar electric technology, including photovoltaic panels that not only generate electricity to power an editing bay, grow vegetables, and treat water onboard but also reduce overall consumption.

When sailing isn’t possible, the solar catamaran is equipped with two electric motors powered by a battery pack of over 100 kWh, which solar panels can also recharge. If the sun isn’t out, the batteries can also be replenished via hydrogeneration, in which the boat’s motion passively spins the propellers of the electric motor, generating a recharge through electromagnetic induction—sort of like regenerative braking but for boats.

iYacht states that the Hu’Chu solar electric sailing catamaran was designed so Roesner could live aboard it, which he plans to do while simultaneously producing documentaries about the oceans and monitoring the water quality. Per Roesner:

I have a large circle of friends consisting of divers, free divers, scientists and underwater filmmakers. I would like to collaborate with them to implement various projects on topics such as environmental protection, research and adventure. I also hope to work with various universities. The boat is going to be a platform for sustainable research, adventure, film and circular living. There are a lot of inspirational projects in the world that have helped me put together some of their unconventional ideas. Among them are Low tech lab , Plastiki, and Energy Observer. Hopefully the Hu’chu 55 will be an inspiration to others as well.

Looking ahead, Roesner hopes to find new partners that share in his quest for sustainability at sea and bring the Hu’Chu to series production so more people can utilize the technology and promote circularity in marine vessels.
