History of Wally Yachts

Wally was founded in 1994 by Italian businessman Luca Bassani, a lifelong sailor who entered the custom yacht-building field in 1991 by designing a yacht for his family. Wally initially specialised in sailboat design, however, over the years the company extended its reach by designing state-of-the-art power yachts. Wally is recognised worldwide for its innovative design and state-of-the-art carbon fibre construction techniques.

Notable Wally Yachts

Among its many world-renowned projects is the 118 WallyPower, a sleek and futuristic looking superyacht featured in the film The Island , starring Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor. Another notable 118 WallyPower is Galeocerdo , built by Wally in Italy in 2003. Among its many awards, the 118 WallyPower has won the Millennium Yacht Design Award in the Layout of the Third Millennium” category. It also was the only yacht featured at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art architecture and design exhibition in 2004/05.

In 2012, Wally launched the 50.50-metre sailing superyacht Better Place . The worlds’ largest sloop build from carbon fibre composite, she was designed by Tripp Design with an interior by Wetzels Brown Partners.

Building on the revolutionary wallypower58 platform, with its striking glass and carbon dome, the wallypower58X introduces a range of new features adapted for outboard propulsion. It is the first Wally yacht to be fitted with the new 600hp Mercury V12 Verado – or rather, a powerful configuration of four of them. With 2,400hp on the transom, the stable and efficient deep V-hull can reach an exhilarating 50 knots. And yet fuel consumption remains low, while the boat’s additional tankage gives it a range of 300 nautical miles. Performance is therefore, a given, but Wally has also exploited other capabilities offered by the new Mercurys. They have a reduced draft compared to other models, making the boat suitable for shallow water operations, while the rotating gearcases and joystick maneuvering system ensure trouble-free precision docking in tight spaces. The wallypower58X comes as standard with folding bulwarks, so no space is sacrificed in the aft section by opting for the outboard configuration. Moreover, just as Wally pioneered on the 48X and later the 43X, the hydraulic passarelle has been smartly built in to make it safe and easy to enter or exit the water. Without the inboard engines, there is naturally extra storage capacity. With the same flexible accommodation for one or two couples as the wallypower58, the boat is set up for exceedingly comfortable daysailing or overnighting.

Meet the Wallypower58

Monaco-based Wally had its official debut for the wallypower58 at the Venice Boat Show in late May.

Previous wallypower models have taken design cues from the angular wallytender. The wallypower58, which replaces the wallypower52, is instead an evolution of design elements in the wallypower118 that launched in 2003.

“At Wally, we often say that our yachts are 20 years ahead of their time, and, in this case, that’s very much the reality, as the new wallypower58 honors the aesthetic of the groundbreaking wallypower118, some two decades after it was introduced to the world,” Stefano de Vivo, Wally’s managing director, stated in a press release.

One new feature is what Wally calls a “magic porthole.” The yard wanted to minimize openings that can spoil hull lines, so it removed the openings completely and instead installed gimbal-stabilized 4K cameras on each side of the boat. Imagery is projected onto screens that are mounted to port and starboard in the salon, creating views of the outdoors without any portholes.

“We are very proud of this innovative and effective solution that requires less maintenance than portholes, no risk of damaging glass while docking alongside and, above all, maximum privacy both at anchor and in the port,” de Vivo said.

Other features aboard the wallypower58 include folding bulwarks that increase aft-deck space by 270 square feet; a partially covered, air-conditioned cockpit with seating for 12 to 16 people; and a hydraulic stern platform. A day head is below, and the en suite master stateroom has a queen-size berth. An optional guest stateroom or crew cabin can be located to port, amidships, with a reduced-size salon.

What’s the power package on the wallypower58? It can be ordered with triple Volvo Penta IPS700s or IPS800s, reportedly providing cruising speeds of more than 30 knots.

Wally shifted the dial on yacht design with the wallywhy200. Innovative in so many ways, its bold aesthetic is only matched by the incredible range of features that can be offered by its 200-gross tonne volume. With its full-wide body, the signature of this futuristic space ship is the vast owner’s suite in the bow, which seems to hang over the water below. Wally has expertly engineered a strip of tall glass running all the way round the main deck, providing the cabin with a 270-degree panoramic views and astonishing natural light. And yet, this high 4.7m bow is part of a hull form has been studied in minute detail to provide stability, eliminate slamming and still deliver semi-displacement performance. Renowned designer Laurent Giles developed the naval architecture specifically for this yacht, which was exhaustively tank-tested in Southampton. Combined with the Volvo IPS pod propulsion system, the wallywhy200 can cruise at 20 knots and hit 23 knots flat out with the optional enhanced power package. The design is breathtaking, with elegant teak decking and steps that cascade down to the beach club aft, which extends with wings at the side and a hydraulic bathing platform that doubles as a passerelle. A 4.15m tender and other toys are garaged invisibly behind the wings. An enormous upper deck is presided over by Wally’s signature glass and carbon dome. And on the lower deck, there are a luxurious VIP suite and two dazzling guest cabins. An eye-catching carbon fibre staircase connects all the decks – laminated in a single piece to give structural support and eliminate bulkheads. This creates open entertaining spaces that blend seamlessly into the exterior.
