Two massive super-yachts appeared in the Santa Barbara Channel last Thursday, drawing awe and questions from beachgoers and residents.

According to Harbormaster Mike Wiltshire, the two offshore vessels are the Lonian — a 285-foot super-yacht built by Feadship of Florida and the Netherlands — and the Hodor , its 216-foot companion ship. Both are owned by billionaire Lorenzo Fertitta, former CEO of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

The Lonian was purchased for $160 million in 2018 and can hold up to 12 guests and 27 crew members, including the captain. According to superyachttimes.com , the ship is ranked as the 117th largest super-yacht in the world, and its sister ship, the Hodor serves as a trailing garage, housing the “toys,” which include ATVs, motorcycles, and a helicopter; the ship has its very own helicopter pad.

The ships have led to a number of calls to the Harbor Patrol from Santa Barbara residents, some of whom wondered if the Hodor ’s helipad indicated a military ship.

Wiltshire said the ships’ captains and crew contacted the Waterfront Department on the evening of Thursday, August 26.

“We provided them with anchor coordinates at that time,” he said. “They have not indicated how long they will be here.”

The two ships were anchored off of Newport Beach a couple of days before their trip to Santa Barbara. Wiltshire said that boats anchoring off the Santa Barbara coast is not unusual, as the department frequently sees large ships requesting to stop by the channel.

“Nothing overly out of the ordinary as we occasionally provide anchor coordinates for vessels too large to moor in the harbor, and they typically shuttle into port using tender boats,” Wiltshire said.

Two Mega-yachts to Moor Temporarily in Newport

Two Mega-yachts to Moor Temporarily in Newport

NEWPORT BEACH — Two mega-yachts will call Newport Harbor their home-away-from-home for two months beginning Aug. 26, following the Newport Beach Harbor Commission’s approval to allow the vessels to moor in the harbor on a temporary basis.

The two limited-time mega-yacht moorings will serve as a “test run” — in an effort to accommodate a growing number of owners of 100-foot-plus yachts who want to visit Newport Harbor.

At the Aug. 14 meeting, the commission in a 5-1 vote approved a measure to allow the 216-foot motoryacht Invictus and the 130-foot yacht Marama to moor in Newport Harbor for two months.

A three-member Harbor Commission subcommittee had been formed to review a request made by Dave New of Basin Marine at a July 10 meeting, to make space available for a 216-foot visiting yacht. Commissioners asked Harbor Resources staff members to work with New to figure out how to accommodate the visiting Delta tri-level mega-yacht.

“I think people will really enjoy seeing these boats in the harbor,” said Harbor Commission vice chairman Brad Avery. “There are not many places on the West Coast where boats of this caliber can come and enjoy the amenities offered here. If it doesn’t work out, then we definitely aren’t going to do it — but I think it is something we should explore.”

Subcommittee members Avery and Dave Girling, along with New, met twice with the city of Newport Beach’s Harbor Resources staff to formulate a recommendation. After discussing concerns about harbor depth, the subcommittee agreed on an appropriate location for the vessels — and specific conditions.

Preparing temporary mooring space for the vessels is aligned with the commission’s goal to “promote Newport Harbor as a preferred and welcoming destination for all to enjoy, including both large and small vessels.” According to staff reports, the harbor has traditionally provided mooring and dock space for boats ranging from 20 to 80 feet in length. Invictus and Marama will be moored (at separate times) in the Turning Basin near the west end of Lido Isle — the only area suitable to accommodate vessels of their size. The location served as a temporary anchorage during the recent Newport Harbor dredging project.

Invictus is expected to stay in the harbor off and on from Aug. 26 to Oct. 31, mooring at the temporary location while cruising in Southern California. The boat carries a 44-foot beam and a draft of 13 feet.

Marama will moor in harbor between Sept. 25 and Sept. 30, to be present during the Sept. 26-29 Lido Boat Show.

Harbor Commissioner Karen Rhyne cast the lone dissenting vote on the large yacht moorings, questioning the boats’ ability to maneuver through the harbor, where the mega-yachts will pump out and how the boats’ diesel exhaust will impact residents. She also was concerned about the length of the mega-yachts’ stay in the harbor.

“I don’t think we have enough information or that we are ready for this,” Rhyne said. “I think it came too fast, I don’t think there is sufficient information — and I would not make a decision on this issue.”

Two Via Lido residents asked the commission not to set a precedent of bringing big boats into the bay.

“We think it’s incredibly premature to test this concept by anchoring in an area that is a recognized turning basin,” said Via Lido resident Judy Coll. “It is not fair to plop down a mega-yacht in front of our property. We bought the house for the magnificent views.”

Increased traffic to the basin, limited harbor depths and impact to views were among the two residents’ concerns presented to the commission.

According to staff reports, the owner of Invictus will install a mooring with light attached at a location approved by Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol, at the owner’s expense, with installation performed by a local mooring contractor. The mega-yacht will drop a forward anchor and use a single mooring at the stern.

The mega-yacht mooring plan was approved with the condition that Marama use a stern mooring, so it will not swing. The permit can be revoked at any time.

Both vessels will post a Notice to Mariners when the mooring is installed, abide by the city’s noise ordinance and be required to pay the city’s current pro-rated mooring fee.

Other Action

In other action, Harbor Commission members received an application to remove and replace the dock and boardwalk located at 3388 Via Lido. The boardwalk will be replaced to maintain public access along the waterfront and newly installed slips will be assigned to two residential units in the mixed-use project.

Approved by the Newport Beach Planning Commission and the city council in 2011, the building renovation consists of converting a commercial bank building into a mixed-use project that incorporates both residential and commercial use. The three upper floors of the building will house two residential units, while the first and second floors will remain office and retail space.

Nine parking spaces are provided for commercial tenants; one single-car garage and a pair of two-car garages will be assigned to the residential units.

As submitted, the application requests the removal and replacement of the existing 4,099-square-foot floating dock and boardwalk. A new 3,518-square-foot floating dock, platform/landing, 3- by 24-foot gangway and a 6-foot-wide public boardwalk will be constructed. Six slips will be reduced to two larger slips with the capability of accommodating vessels up to 110 feet in length.

Additionally, the old concrete pilings will be removed and replaced with 11 new concrete pilings. The revitalization plan also eliminates encroachment that previously occurred on neighboring properties, since the permittee was granted a residential pier permit that requires a 5-foot setback.

“It’s great,” Avery said. “It’s a win.”

The company doing this project also owns property at 2300 Newport Blvd., which is currently under construction for mixed-use development and a new marina.

The commission also voted to revoke three moorings after permit holders failed to pay annual rental fees. The mooring permittees who failed to pay the fees had reportedly been contacted by city staff members at least eight times.

The revoked moorings will be offered to boaters who are currently on the mooring waiting list.

Two massive superyachts —  a 285-foot vessel and its somewhat smaller companion ship — have dropped anchor for a few days about a half-mile off popular Corona del Mar State Beach, creating a spectacle that has drawn gawking shoreline spectators along with  some questions from Newport Beach locals.

“People have called our dispatch and have asked what’s up with the boats,” Capt. Gary Llewelyn of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Harbor Patrol said Wednesday, Aug. 25. “They are big, beautiful ships. It’s drawn everyone’s curiosity, including ours.”

According to Superyachttimes.com, the larger “Lonian” superyacht is owned by Lorenzo Fertitta. He is chairman of Fertitta Capital, director of Red Rock Resorts Inc. and former CEO of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The ship, built by Feadship, was purchased for $160 million in 2018.

Another yacht, about 200 feet-long and equipped with a helicopter pad, is anchored nearby and clearly visible from the popular beach known as Big Corona.

A comparable sight in terms of size, and visible in recent years in Newport Harbor and elsewhere in Southern California, has been the Invictus which checks in at 216-feet long, Llewelyn said.

Superyachttimes.com reports that the Lonian can accommodate up to 12 guests and 27 crew members, including the captain. The ship is ranked as the 117th largest superyacht in the world. The smaller companion Hodor, accommodates a crew of 20 plus the captain, is ranked as 321st largest globally.

The helicopter pad drew some people to conclude the ships were from the military.

“If people think it’s a military vessel so close to our shore, I think they should know it isn’t,” Llewelyn said.

Llewelyn said that both ships are not interfering with vessel passage and are fine to be located where they are.

“As long as they display the proper day shape (flags) during the day and if anchored and proper lights at night, they are not doing anything wrong,” Llewelyn said.

Paul Blank, Newport’s harbor master, confirmed the ship’s owner and said the yacht manager has checked in with him to see if there are any required permits. This is the ships’ second visit in 30 days.

“They were here one other time for 12 hours and were conducting helicopter operations and needed clearance from John Wayne Airport,” Blank said. “They also checked in with me to make sure they didn’t need a permit.”

Blank said they also informed him that they would be transiting the harbor to pick up some guests from a public pier.

“I suggested they take a harbor cruise and observe the many scenic attractions around the harbor and consider replenishment at many of our fine locations,” he said.

Blank said that the ships are expected to stay in their anchorage at Big Corona for less than five days.

Newport Harbor Floats Plan to Host Billionaire SoCal Developer's Mega-Yacht

The yacht in question is five stories tall, 216 feet long and owned by one of southern california's most prominent developers, published august 26, 2013 • updated on august 27, 2013 at 9:55 am.

A so-called "mega-yacht" may be coming to a Southern California harbor this weekend. But some residents are opposed to plans to have this and possibly another yacht moor right in their backyards.

It is described by some as a personal cruise ship. Harbor officials say there has never been a boat the size of the Invictus on Newport's waterways. It stands five stories tall and 216 feet long, or the size of a 20-story building.

The yacht belongs to billionaire Rick Caruso, who plans to christen the vessel as early as this weekend, and there is only one place deep enough to moor the 580-ton yacht: the Newport Harbor at the Lido Marina Village.

"I think it would be weird to have a boat sitting directly in the middle of the harbor, but if they're paying for it they might as well get what they're paying for," said Nathan Bryant, owner of Suplove, a paddle board business.

Bryant said he hopes that the boat brings him big bucks from people who are curious enough to see the ship and then maybe try out paddle boarding.

But Cassandra Vasquez, of Windward Sailing Co., said she would rather see the water than a big boat.

"Why would they let a 216-foot long boat moor in here?" said Vazquez. "It's a small harbor, I think."

Other residents are concerned the yacht will be noisy and emit fumes.

City officials are poised to give Caruso a two-month permit, with the promise that the boat will only be in the harbor for four weekends. There are no docks big enough to hold it, so The Invictus must bring its own moorings.

"Our focus is really to attract a different size vessel and to be more visitor friendly," Harbor Resource Director Chris Miller said. "Certainly there is a [mooring] fee involved."

Based on what the city charges at $38 per foot per year, the fee comes out to $1,368 for two months. But harbor officials said they are not doing it for the money.

"Our goal is to test it and see if it works," Miller said.

Caruso's office declined to comment on the situation.

The owner of a second boat that is about 130 feet long is also asking for a permit to moor at the harbor and have a wedding onboard. The "mega-yachts" would not be parked at the same time.

The Megayacht Invictus, owned by Los Angeles developer Robert J. Caruso enters Newport Harbor.

NEWPORT BEACH – One of the largest boats to enter Newport Harbor has arrived in the form of the 216-foot Invictus – a brand new megayacht constructed at Delta Marine’s shipyard in Washington state – that has made its way to Southern California for its christening ceremony.

The vessel on Friday navigated its way from the harbor entrance to the Lido turning basin in about an hour, using a 6:50 p.m. high tide to traverse the shallow portions of the bay, keeping the vessel and its 13-foot draft from touching the harbor floor. As of Sunday morning, Invictus had left the harbor, reportedly on its way to Santa Catalina Island.

Owned by Los Angeles developer Rick J. Caruso, Invictus is roughly 80 feet longer than the largest charter vessels in the harbor, and required a special mooring site in the harbor since it was too big for any of the harbor’s dock areas.

The Newport Beach Harbor Commission gave its blessing at its Aug. 14 meeting, and final approval came from the city’s Harbor Resources manager Chris Miller, who granted both Invictus and the 130-foot yacht Marama temporary mooring privileges in the harbor. Commissioner Brad Avery said the approval to grant a boat of Invictus’ size into the harbor will act as a “trial run” for Newport Beach as a potential megayacht stopover.

“We’re a world-class harbor,” Avery said. “We have a strong boating community and what better way to signal that then by welcoming the latest and greatest vessel from an American shipyard.”

The Invictus is scheduled to be in the harbor a total of 16 days over the course of a two-month period, and the Marama is slated to arrive Sept. 25, staying for five days. However, the ships will not be allowed to moor in the harbor at the same time.

BIG BOAT DEBATE

While the boats are expected to bring business to local harbor front stores and potential buzz to the bay, Invictus’ arrival has sparked concerns from waterfront homeowners worried about such large ships mooring so close to their homes. Twenty-year Lido Isle resident Pamela Whitesides, whose condominium faces directly where Invictus has anchored, joined with neighbors Don and Judy Cole to protest the vessel’s arrival.

“I live on the top floor of our two-story building, but this ship is five stories high,” said Whitesides, who is concerned the “trial” period for allowing temporary megayacht anchoring in the harbor will become a permanent fixture, with large ships stopping by regularly in Newport Harbor.

“There was virtually no notice to the general community or the surrounding residents that this trial was under discussion,” Whitesides said.

The request from Invictus to enter Newport Harbor was originally heard when Balboa Yacht Basin manager Dave New brought the request to the Harbor Commission at its July meeting. It was placed on the Commission’s August agenda, and a subcommittee was formed consisting of commissioners Brad Avery and David Girling, along with Harbor Resources manager Chris Miller, Dave New and Harbor Patrol mooring deputy Sean Scoles.

Of the subcommittee members, three had ties with the boat owners, as Girling and New disclosed a friendship with Invictus’ owner Caruso, and Avery said he was an acquaintance of the owner of Marama. Girling said he and Avery checked with assistant city attorney Michael Torres before casting a vote on the mooring arrangement.

“As long as there is no financial gain, and I can be objective and unbiased in my decision, then it was ok to make that decision,” Girling said. “It benefitted us to have those relationships, because we were able to communicate and understand characteristics of the boats to make a good, sound decision.”

The Harbor Commission voted 5-1 in favor of the temporary mooring of both vessels, with Commissioner Karen Rhyne the sole dissenting vote.

Whitesides, along with Don and July Cole, tried to get a City Council member to appeal the decision to be heard by the full council, but was unsuccessful.

“It seems premature to have a test trial for a precedent-setting, policy-changing situation of this magnitude that hasn’t been thoroughly vetted and approved by the City Council with ample input from the  community,” said Don Cole, adding that the only reason he found out about the Harbor Commission hearing was due to an email sent by Miller.

“I want to stress that this is really being done on a trial basis,” Miller said. “No one has any grand ideas, and we’ll be monitoring this and giving an update later this year on how it went.”

The turning basin will be further crowded by the upcoming Lido Boat Show, which temporarily moors more than 200 vessels on added dock space extending out into the harbor. While the show only runs from Sept. 26-29, dock construction began Aug. 30, and will remain in the bay until a week after the show. The area is also home to many of Newport Beach’s charter fleet – some of the largest boats in the harbor.

“We don’t see any issues with space down there,” Miller said. “There is plenty of waterway in that area, and the charter captains are professionals; they know how to maneuver.”

2022 PADDLE FOR ACCESS

  • Saturday, August 20, 2022
  • 8:00 AM 12:00 PM 08:00 12:00

The 5th Annual Paddle for Access hosted by Clean Ocean Access is a 3 mile or 6 mile paddle (SUP) around Goat Island in Newport, RI.

Clean water and healthy oceans are critical to fun ocean events, which is why we believe in a clean, healthy ocean that is accessible to all. Shoreline access limitations inspired the roots of our organization back in 2006 and to this day, it remains a critical issue of focus. Paddle for Access celebrates our work to monitor all 50 rights-of-way across Aquidneck Island and ensure everyone has access to the shoreline. The event also sheds light on many other issues that impact public access to the shoreline, including erosion, sea-level rise, invasive species, and long term shoreline planning. Sign up to participate or volunteer to help us achieve our goal to preserve and protect public shoreline access.

All dollars raised will be directed to the endowed fund which provides financial assistance to children and families seeking to participate in Sail Newport’s Summer Youth Sailing Program. “Tim loved sailing in and around Narragansett Bay and loved encouraging new sailors, young and old. This Fund seems to be a perfect way to pay tribute to him in a way that he would have supported, sharing his love of the water and providing an opportunity for young sailors to experience sailing for the first time,” says Kathleen Dunn, Mills’ sister. “2024 looks to be another exciting and busy season for yachts heading to Newport,” said Michael Millerick, general manager of Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard, a premier superyacht marina and shipyard in the northeast. “This summer’s yachting and special event schedule is packed with many great events including the TP52 Super Series regatta; Newport to Bermuda Race; USGA Senior Open Championship at Newport Country Club; Newport Flower Show at Rosecliff Mansion; Safe Harbor Race Weekend; and many more high-profile events that are sure to attract yacht owners and charter guests from around the world,” Millerick said.

“We look forward to welcoming back yacht captains, crew members, charter brokers, marine industry vendors and sponsors and we encourage yacht captains and charter brokers to register early for the show to take advantage of the 25% savings on registration and dockage which is in place until February 15, 2024.”

‘Superyachts’ visiting Newport Beach might face higher fees

Newport Beach is trying to determine proper anchorage fee structure for visiting superyachts in Newport Harbor.

The city’s Harbor Commission also has been studying a fair price for temporary moorings of extra-large vessels but will wait until a draft appraisal has been submitted before sharing its suggestions.

Superyachts have been the subject of some debate in the city over the years.

Costa Mesa-based Netzer and Associates, which has worked with the city in the past, is completing the appraisal at a cost of $6,500. A final draft should be ready in January or February, said Assistant City Manager Carol Jacobs.

Currently, harbor staff charges visiting yachts the annual mooring permit fee prorated on a daily basis.

Commission Chairman Bill Kenney said the professional appraisal probably will be more comprehensive and reliable and suggest a higher rate than the commission’s research.

The current fee for a typical annual permit is $35.43 per foot. For a vessel like the 216-foot superyacht Invictus , which stayed in Newport Harbor off and on for about two controversial months in 2013, that would mean a mooring fee of about $21 a day, according to Harbor Commissioner Dave Girling. Commissioners have said that could be considered nominal compared with other public harbors and commercial marinas.

Kenney said commissioners tasked with suggesting new fees put together other rules that wouldn’t be in an appraisal, including defining a large vessel as at least 100 feet long and requiring a permit to temporarily moor with anchors at the bow and stern in an area in the west anchorage for oversize vessels. The fee would be based on how long the mooring tackle is in the harbor, not the boat itself.

Testimonials

Tim, just wanted to leave you a message that we really appreciate what a wonderful job you did for us and making our 44th wedding anniversary cruise such a wonderful and memorable experience. Just want to let you know that we would recommend you to anybody for what you do, thank you and God bless you Rick & Becky Melendrez
First, both Captain Andrea and Shane were excellent - easy to work with and made us feel very comfortable on the yacht. I would absolutely recommend them to others and will likely request them on a future charter. Thank you for selecting them. Second, the yacht (Sea Ray 510) was just what we needed for this charter and really made it a special day. Finally, the weather was perfect, so made the afternoon at sea quite enjoyable. I appreciate all your help in setting up the charter and will certainly use your services again. Tom Otterbein
Thank you so much for helping us find our beautiful boat - a Mikelson 50'! We can honestly say that without Tim's guidance - and patience - we would never have found this boat, and more importantly - would not have had the confidence to move forward with the purchase. First - you helped us narrow down the search to the type of boat we wanted - showing us over 30 boats from Santa Barbara to San Diego. Then once we decided what to focus the search on - you found a boat that was not even on the market! You helped with every aspect of the negotiations, purchase, survey, inspections, and after the purchase, with training, and answering endless questions! We are so grateful for your help, constant availability, and amazing positive attitude. Nancy & Gregg Hughes
We had an amazing time with our Captain Tim and his crew. We wish we never had to leave. They were very gracious hosts and made sure no one in our group wanted for anything. They provided us with the absolute best customer service and was very respectful to all of our guest. Words truly cannot express how wonderful our experience was with Newport Yachts. Thank you so much for all of the accommodations you made for us. Definitely will be using them for our next Yacht rental in California. Jazne B.
Amazing yacht and crew! It was such a great experience we’ve gone back twice already! Tim and the crew helped us create a perfect custom trip for the best deal in Orange County. Nick Peper
We met Tim when he captained a boat for us. We were so impressed with his professionalism and boating knowledge that when we decided to purchase a boat he was our guy. He handled everything from tracking down a particular boat we loved from Maine to negotiating a price, inspecting it and getting it to Newport safely. To this day he looks after our boat like it is his own! Mike & Ann Kelly
Our group could not be more happy with our charter. Tim handled everything effortlessly, and Capt Brandon was excellent. The boat was spotless, and even the gray whales performed on cue. We will be back, soon. Richard Dover

40ft Luxury Yacht Charter In Newport Beach - HARBOR - COASTAL - CATALINA

The charter ride was amazing, our captain Jermey was super helpful and accommodating! The boat is beautiful and I would definitely book again! We had a great time!!

Captain Jeremy was a phenomenal captain. Cody and team kept in great communication. Overall, it was an amazing experience and I would recommend booking with them.

Cody did a great job of scheduling us and communicating everything when our first evening time slot wasn’t available. We did 12noon to 3pm which worked out very well. Jeremy was our Captain, and he did really nice job taking us around the harbor pointing out different houses and their associated stories and also brief tour of the CDM coastline. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the cruise as we celebrated my wife’s 60th birthday! It was a fun day on the water - starting with pre-cruise drinks at Billy’s. A fun and relaxing experience!

Sabrina

Best experience ever! Location was amazing! We decided to grab a drink at Billy’s by the beach before we started our trip and it was perfect. Once aboard the beautiful boat we had so much fun! The seats were so nice and the boat was very luxurious. Captain was super knowledgeable and very funny. We played our own music as well. The sound system on the boat was amazing and super loud. Will definitely be renting again for the Christmas parade. Also having a bathroom onboard was very nice.

12/10 experience. Cody is the best! He was very accommodating to our needs and had a great attitude for everything. Communication was quick and responsive as well. The Pineapple Express itself is very spacious and it is perfect for hanging around with friends/family. Highly recommend Cody and his boat for any experience!

Ive always loved captaining boats and love showing our guests the beautiful waterways of my hometown. I’m happy to be able to provide an unforgettable, safe and very fun experience to our charter guests. All of our vessels are coast guard approved and operated by licensed coast guard captains.

Welcome Aboard Temma, our beautiful 42ft, one off custom built commuter yacht. Built 1928 in Boothbay Maine by BW Rand's Boat Shop. Originally named Priscilla for the Teel Family in Boston MA. Before Pricilla, BW Rand's Boat Shop built a Sam Crocker Design with a raised deck. BW Rand later realized that with a couple changes he could improve upon the original Sam Crocker Design. With borrowed molds, the shop spaced some sections, neglected the raised deck opting for the long cabin top and adjusted the stern layouts. Temma was built long deep but skinny enough for just the right amount of power easily pushed along. With a displacement hull, speed was never in the design but stability & space combined with the smooth styling, Temma is perfect for what she does. Over the years multiple families have been the caretakers of this iconic New England Yacht & each have maintained her perfectly, for the next owners to continue on the legacy. Newport Classic Yacht Co. welcomes you to our private yacht endeavor, Temma.
