Channel Hopping: The World on their Oyster

  • Kass Schmitt
  • January 16, 2023

Our resident YouTube fanatic revisits Sailing Yacht Florence after a three year absence and finds that they have "massively upped their game when it comes to filming and editing, while visiting places a bit off the beaten track"...

Firstly, I need to thank reader Dean Colegate for his recommendation of Sailing Yacht Florence .

My YouTube history shows that I dipped into the channel a couple of times back in 2019 but it did not manage to capture my attention at the time.

I’m glad Dean encouraged me to give the channel another chance, as they’ve massively upped their game when it comes to filming and editing, while visiting places a bit off the beaten track (how many sailing YouTubers have you seen in Namibia?).

Amy Cartwright and Matt Humphreys are a British couple in their mid-thirties who, in 2016, set out the UK’s south coast to circumnavigate the world on Florence , their 1985 Oyster Heritage 37.

In a refreshing departure from the typical sail vlogger background, both of them grew up sailing . Amy spent summers cruising in the UK with her family aboard their Wharram Tiki 21. She also raced dinghies at a high level through university and beyond, and was the only women to compete in the 2009 49er world championships.

Channel Hopping: Outer Passage – formerly known as Sailing Panda

Our resident YouTube aficionado Kass Schmitt ponders if “as seen on YouTube” charters could be a new trend.

While Matt also raced dinghies at a high level, his big boat experience started after university, when he took part in the RORC Round Britain and Ireland Race. He was subsequently selected for the GBR Yacht Racing Academy and eventually ended up as helm/tactician on a Farr 52 for the Rolex Fastnet Race.

So if they make sailing a 37ft AWB around the world look easy, it’s because for them it is.

Which is not to say they haven’t had challenges or setbacks, of course they’ve had their share, but they just seem to deal with it all, calmly, competently, and without making a fuss.

Likewise they seem to take in the good bits with quiet, thoughtful appreciation.

In a recent episode , as they prepare to cross the same meridian from which they started their journey six years ago, they reflect on the highs and lows of their adventure.

Should you not have the time or inclination to watch all 140 (and counting) videos, this provides a good shortlist of episodes to start with.

I’m certain that I’ll keep watching, as I’m looking forward to seeing them cross their outbound track as they re-enter the Caribbean, and of course I can’t wait to see what they’ll do after that.

Our Story

Welcome aboard Florence - our floating home that will take us around the world on a series of adventures.

And who are we? Abby and Stephen - newlyweds who recently quit our stressful jobs in finance, packed up our fast-paced city life in London, bought a 55' sailboat and have taken to the high seas in search of a different way of life. For two people who just two years ago didn't know a thing about sailing, this has been an unconventional choice to say the least, and one that took our family, friends and colleagues completely by surprise. After many months of preparation, we are about to slip the lines and will admit that at the outset of this adventure, we have many more questions than answers. What we do know is the status quo: we know our lives in the London rat race - how we fit within this sphere and what our capabilities are. What will happen when we completely throw ourselves out of our comfort zone? What will we discover about ourselves and each other? What will we discover about the world? Who will we meet? What will we see?  How will this experience change us? What is our true potential? Will this be the adventure of a lifetime or a huge mistake?  I guess we are going to find out….

We invite you to follow along with us on this crazy journey as we attempt to discover what this great big beautiful world - and we - are made of.

Sail with the Flo – from England back to England – via the rest of the world

BROKEN by Ocean Sailing | 50,000 miles later

Repairing Florence ready for the next adventure. 50,000 miles of offshore ocean sailing has taken its toll on our boat. We take Florence into the boat yard and strip her out for a survey. The result is a daunting list of work that we need to do ourselves before we can re-launch Florence and set sail on the next adventure.

1 thought on “BROKEN by Ocean Sailing | 50,000 miles later”

I am writing to you from the western side of Canada. I have been following your trip for a while, until I found this link, signing up to follow you required a social media account, which I am not part of. I was happy to find this way to hear what is going on.

The love that you have not for just sailing and each other but for the places that you visit is so evident in the way that you talk, research and convey to all who are watching is amazing. At the end of the last video I was so hit by how broken you looked Amy, my heart really goes out to you and Matt. You two have overcome so many things in the last number of years and I firmly believe that you two, with the help of your friends and the sailing community, will overcome this as well.

I think in one of your videos one of you mentioned that you don’t have a formal faith, but I do, and I am praying that the people, resources and knowledge will surround you and bring this issue to a conclusion that is even greater than anyone can imagine.

Looking forward to hearing more about your adventures.
