Brent & Lucas were awesome! Very friendly and patient with our large group of 35 people for a birthday party. The boat was spacious! We could’ve easily fit a full boat of 45 people comfortably. We will for sure book again but probably for a fishing trip next time! A couple things to note if you are having a boat party, you can text the captain a Spotify playlist to play over the boat speakers and they have a cooler on board already (bring your own ice). The only thing I might suggest is having a doc with frequently asked questions and answers. This would eliminate a lot of back and forth messaging. We had a wonderful time thank you!

We booked Jim's boat for my sister's birthday (she's a Pisces). Jim was nothing short of an exceptional host and his boat was beautiful. Communication was great from start to finish, he answered all our questions, and gave user friendly directions. (And made a ton of dad jokes).The inside space had a bunch of amenities we forgot to bring and Jim kept us at ease with his knowledge and expertise while out on the Bay. Jim was amazing, funny, and a whole VIBE. We all enjoyed the trip and would highly recommend his ship.

Captain Tim and Shannon were the best host ever ! We felt secured and comfy all day ! It was my bday celebration and they made the best day ever ! The boat it self is amazing and support any needs that you may have , but they made the experience a complete success . My group was loud and we even had DJ equipment with us and they not just didn’t bored at all but also vibe with us all day ! I can wait to book back with them , I definitely recommend Shanutsuki Yach ! 5 star overall

Yes! Listing a boat is completely free. We only take a commission when your boat is rented. We only make money when you do!

What if I'm not comfortable having a renter drive my boat?

If you are not comfortable having a renter drive your boat, we have an expansive network of licensed and experienced captains. Once your boat is listed, you can filter through our network of captains and favorite captains in your area that you would like to operate your boat.

• Sailing to Pier 39 where the sea lions have taken over a whole marina. You’ll pass on the lee side of Alcatraz to be greeted by seagulls. Then it’s off around Angel Island to Ayala Cove where you can see the beautiful cities of Tiburon and Sausalito. Experience the current in Raccoon Straight, while passing under the Golden Gate Bridge with the fresh ocean breeze on your face. With luck, you’ll see dolphins or whales. Jibe the boat back and enjoy the gorgeous city front of San Francisco. This tour requires four hours or more. 
• Docking by Sam’s Cafe in Tiburon for drinks and a burger or enjoy one of many other fabulous restaurants on the water. This is a four-hour minimum tour. 
• Sail by the baseball park and catch home run balls. This is a three to four-hour tour. 
• Pack a picnic basket or barbecue, and we’ll sail over to Angel Island. This is a full day event (six hours minimum).
• Sail under the Golden Gate Bridge and see the sunset. This can be done in two hours. 
• Go out beyond the Golden Gate Bridge and sail in the Pacific Ocean. Depending on how far out in the ocean we sail, this can take two hours to a full day.

San Francisco Bay Sailboat Rentals and Bareboat Charters

Are you looking for a bareboat sailboat rental on San Francisco Bay? Look no further. At Modern Sailing Sausalito and Berkeley, we have a robust fleet of sailboats and catamarans available for charter within the waters of San Francisco Bay. Yachts range from 30 to 44 feet in length and are expertly maintained by our experienced and skilled fleet technicians. Yacht charters are available year-round with the option of a bareboat charter or skippered charter. 

The Sportboat Fleet

Our fleet of 24' to 26' sportboats in Berkeley are a fun option for crews of 2 to 4 to enjoy an active day of sailing. With a fleet of ten J/24s and a J/80 for when you’re ready for something a bit more exciting, you’re always able to get out on the Bay.

Modern Sailing members can get qualified to charter our Sportboat Fleet by completing ASA 103, Sportboat Coastal Cruising or the Upgrade to Sportboat Fleet Clinic . 

The Premium Sportboat Fleet

Sailboats in our Premium Sportboat Fleet are larger than our Sportboat fleet (>27') and are equipped with tiller steering, inboard diesel engines, and basic overnighting features.

To charter Premium Sportboats, members must be both Sportboat and Cruising Boat (Silver, Gold, or Platinum Fleet) Rated.

• To charter a Premium Sportboat 29' to 32', a Sportboat Fleet and Silver Fleet (minimum) Ratings are required.
• To charter a Premium Sportboat 33' to 34', a Sportboat Fleet and Gold Fleet (minimum) Ratings are required.

The Silver Fleet

Our Silver Fleet is the largest fleet of Catalina 30s and 320s in the Bay Area. A dependable and spacious yacht, the Catalina 30 was a popular design that launched in the late 1980s. Our Catalina 30 fleet is used for private and group sailing lessons all year long, rain or shine. Larger than the Catalina 30, the Catalina 320 has a sporty racer/cruiser design that delivers both sailing performance and spaciousness below deck. These yachts are perfect for a day or evening sail on the SF Bay with your closest crew.

Club members can rent sailboats in the Silver Fleet after successfully completing a Fleet Rating Checkout on any size vessel or by completing the ASA 103, Basic Coastal Cruising course at Modern Sailing. Hire a captain for a Skippered Sail to enjoy the bay if you are not a Modern Sailing club member.

The Gold Fleet

Our Gold Fleet consists of Beneteau, Jeanneau, Dufour, and Catalina yachts ranging from 35 - 37 ft. long. Enjoy a luxurious sail with the modern amenities that these yachts are renowned for. Conveniently rigged, these yachts feature stack-packs, in-mast furling, dutch reefing systems, and dodgers. The interiors of our Gold Fleet sailboats astound with sleek designs, spacious galleys, and comfy berths. Gold Fleet yachts are popular for day sails and overnight charters at Angel Island, Paradise Cove, and Jack London Square.

The Platinum and Catamaran Fleet - Luxury yacht charters on San Francisco Bay

Experience all that the SF Bay has to offer - in style . Complete with all the amenities needed for simple, comfortable sailing, these Jeanneau, Beneteau, Fountaine Pajot, Seawind, and Lagoon 40 yachts will complete your bay sailing experience. Sized 38 to 40 feet in length, their spacious designs can accommodate 6-8 guests overnight with room to spare.

How to Get Fleet Rated for Bareboat Chartering

Bareboat charters are available only for members who have successfully completed the required ASA Certification Courses or have undergone a successful Fleet Rating Checkout.

Experienced Sailors

Experienced sailors joining the club are not required to possess certifications but must submit a sailing resume and successfully complete a Fleet Rating Checkout with one of our instructors. Sailors seeking a Fleet Rating to charter have the option of doing a Checkout Clinic or a Private Checkout.

To get started on scheduling a Fleet Rating Checkout, please complete and submit this electronic Request Form .

Beginning Sailors

New members who are beginners can gain access to our fleet by completing ASA Certification Courses at Modern Sailing:

• Completion of our Berkeley ASA 103, Sportboat Basic Coastal Cruising certifies sailors to charter our Berkeley Sportboat Fleet.
• Completion of ASA 103, Basic Coastal Cruising on a 30'+ cruising boat in Sausalito or Berkeley certifies new sailors to charter Silver Fleet (30’ – 32’).
• Students who completed ASA 103 on a cruising boat can add the Sportboat and Premium Sportboat (29'-32') Fleet rating by completing the Upgrade to Sportboat Fleet Clinic .
• Students who completed ASA 103 on a tiller-steered sportboat can add the Premium Sportboat Fleet and Silver Fleet Ratings by taking the Upgrade to Silver Fleet Clinic .
• Students who are Sportboat Fleet and Gold Fleet (minimum) Rated can charter Premium Sportboats sized 33' to 34'.
• ASA 103 graduates who have skippered 4 on-the-water days (4 or more hours each) can qualify to charter the Gold Fleet by completing the Gold Fleet Upgrade Clinic .
• Completion of ASA 104, Bareboat Cruising certifies sailors to charter Silver, Gold (33’ – 37’), and Platinum (37’ – 44’) Fleets.
• To charter catamarans, completion of ASA 114, Cruising Catamaran at Modern Sailing is required. (Note: ASA 103 or 104 or a Fleet Rating Checkout on a monohull is required to charter monohulls in addition to catamarans.)

When a Fleet Rating Checkout is Not Required...

A Fleet Checkout Rating is not required when a member:

• joins the club less than one year after completing ASA 103, ASA 104, or ASA 114 at Modern Sailing, or
• rejoins the club less than two years after the last bareboat charter at Modern Sailing.

How to Get Site Rated to Charter at Both Locations

• Students who completed ASA 103 and/or are Silver Fleet Rated (or above) in Sausalito can get rated to charter in Berkeley by joining a Berkeley Site Orientation Sail .
• Students who complete ASA 103 or are Sportboat Fleet Rated (or above) in Berkeley can get rated to charter in Sausalito by completing an Upgrade to Silver Fleet Clinic or Sausalito Site Orientation Sail .
• Completing ASA 103 at one location and ASA 104 at the other location qualifies members to charter at both locations.
• Once rated to charter at both sites, your original Fleet Rating will remain the same at both sites.

Spinnaker Sailing offers bareboat charters to qualified sailors, both members and non-members. Please read the information below to learn how you can charter with us on beautiful San Francisco Bay.

We also offer our unique TimeShare Sailing  program which is the best alternative to boat ownership. 7 monthly uses for one flat fee!

All students of Spinnaker Sailing's classes get qualified as part of the learning process.

As part of learning with us, we make sure you are 100% prepared and more importantly, 100% confident of your skills on San Francisco Bay

Yes, we DO offer bareboat charters to Qualifed Sailors who didn't go through their sailing instruction with us. 

If you've checked around San Francisco Bay you've probably found out every other company doesn't offer bareboat charters to non-members of that company's sailing club. San Francisco Bay is notoriously difficult to sail. The combination of high winds, fast currents and huge ships all around you make SF Bay a sailors mecca, for those with the right skills, or a sailors nightmare for those without. Fear not, for our checkout fee of $300 we'll get you checked out and make sure you're ready for the Bay. Please note: The checkout process is two-fold. If you are ASA or US Sailing Certified send us a copy of your logbook including certifications and you won't have to take the written exams. If you're not, be prepared to take two written exams before we will even schedule you for the on-water checkout. EVERYONE takes the on-water checkout. There's no other way to prove your skills than for one of our captains to witness you underway. The written and on-water can't be done on the same day!

Expectations

• The insurance company requires 8 hours of skippering experience every 60 days to stay current. If you don't have that, you will probably have take a private lesson prior to checking out so you can pass this test. 
• As the on water test requires a 100% passing grade to qualify, the point at which you don't pass a skill, we head back to the dock and the test is over. There is no instruction as part of the checkout test. We do offer private lessons which is a great way to tune up prior to taking the on-water test.
• The checkout process is NOT certification. It is just to prove your skills to us so our insurance company will underwrite your sailing. We do offer the ASA certification process. This takes much longer and requires additional fees to the American Sailing Association. Ask us for more info on getting certified.
• Expect the written tests to take approximately 2 hours. There are two test for each level of checkout.
• The on-water checkout test can run from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on your skills.
• You will sign a charter agreement and post a damage deposit for the boat you are checking out on. The deposit ranges from $3000 - $6000 depending on the boat. Any and ALL damage you created while checking out is your responsiblity up to the level of deposit. Over that level the insurance company pays.
• If you don't pass the written exams, you fail the checkout and we won't schedule the on-water portion.
• Here's the summary of what you will be tested on . If you're chartering boats up to 27' you'll need to know up through the BCC (ASA 103) level of testing. Over 27' and you'll be tested all the way through ICC (ASA 104)

Written exams and on-water exams never happen on the same day. We can't keep a captain on standby as some people fail the written exam, thus failing the checkout .

• Written Exams 80%
• On-Water Exam 100% (yes, you need to know 100% of how to setup up the boat, operate the engine, dock the boat, raise sails, MOB, etc. If you think about it, knowing 100% of this skills makes sense to an insurance company writing you a million dollar check...they want to make sure you don't have to cash it.)
• The point at which you fail anything during the on-water test, we head back to the dock. There is no instructional component to the checkout test .

The Procedure

Please completely and accurately fill out this document-  Sailing Resume  and email it back to us HERE . One we recieve this, we will contact you with the insurance company's requirements for the next step in the checkout, usually a written exam or if you are already certified to the appropriate level, the on-water test.

Private Lesson Prior to Checkout?

This is a great option for those who've never sailed SF Bay but have loads of sailing experience and perhaps are even certified elsewhere. We will pair you with one of our outstanding captains who will make sure you are 100% up to speed on all the skills before your checkout. If you fall short, they'll be honest and suggest a path for you to follow towards checkout or certification. Minimum of 3 hours ($110/hr) plus prorated boat costs.

Yes, how about a skippered charter. There are a few advantages to this:

• You don't have to post a damage deposit as our US Coast Guard certifed Captain is in charge.
• You can sail the boat as much or as little as you want
• It can be a GREAT learning experience. Take advantage of the Captain's experience and skill
• At the end of the charter, you simply step off the boat. The Captain pumps the holding tank, docks the boat and cleans her up.
• Saves Time and costs nearly the same as a non-member bareboat charter.

POLICIES & PROCEDURES

REGISTRATION - Full Payment is required in advance in order to confirm enrollment in any class. Payments can be made in cash, check or credit card, in person or on the phone. WHAT TO BRING -  Students should dress appropriate for the weather. Proper attire includes soft-soled tennis or deck shoes (NO BLACK SOLES PLEASE). Sunscreen, Hats and glasses are a great idea. Dress in Layers and warmly. Foulies are suggested for Basic Coastal Cruising and Beyond. CLUB DUES  - Members of the club have dues of $65/mo. LEARN TO SAIL GUARANTEE  - A free makeup class is provide for any student who fails to meet the required objectives for certification. Students must have attended each scheduled class and taken all prerequisite classes at Spinnaker Sailing within the past 3 months. Make-up must be same level. MAKE-UPS - Students are encouraged to attend all of their classes as scheduled. If regular class times are inconvenient, private instruction should be arranged. Makeup classes are available if the student has given Spinnaker at least 72 hours notice and another similar class has space available. Makeup Fee is $100/per day. CLASS CANCELLATIONS - 7 Days notice is required for reschedule or full refund. $100 day reschedule fee if we receive less than 7 days notice and there are no refunds inside of 7 days. . COURSE MATERIALS - Cost of books, ASA certification tracking & certification tests are extra if you choose to get certified, which we strongly suggest
