new mega yacht 2022

18 Feb 2022

Following our recent video outlining the biggest superyacht launches due in 2022 , we thought we'd go into even more detail of the superyachts that are destined to join the fleet this year.

1.  Project  Blue  |  Lürssen  | 158-metre

In the coming weeks we are expecting the launch of one of the biggest superyachts in the world, currently known as  Blue ,  Lürssen 's first launch of 2022 is believed to be 158-metres in length, though details of the yacht are currently completely under wraps. We are currently estimating her volume to be more than 15,000 GT and in the coming days we will be able to share the first images of this superyacht. If our estimations of the yachts length are correct, in our ranking of the  50 biggest superyachts in the world   Blue  will unseat the 2016  Lürssen  superyacht  Dilbar  from her position at number five.

2.  Project Opera  | Lürssen  | 146-metre

Like  Blue , the next yacht in our list also comes from the German shipbuilders  Lürssen Yachts .  Project Opera  was first  unveiled in April last year when she was transported from her initial construction shed in Hamburg to the Lürssen outfitting facility . Like  Project Blue  the details of the yacht have remained tightly under wraps, however, we do know that her exterior lines come from the boards of  Terence Disdale Design . The images reveal an elegant yacht with a large pool on the main deck and an expansive beach club.

3.  Luminance  |  Lürssen  | 145-metre

Coming up in third place is yet another  Lürssen , the 145-metre  Luminance.  We are not entirely  sure if  Luminance  will be finished this year, though her hull was transported in 2021 , she has not been seen since.  Lürssen  however have a solid reputation for producing high quality yachts to their delivery dates, so we will have to wait and see! Unlike the about two vessels we do know the interior designer of the yacht, with the owner selecting  Zuretti Interior Design .

4.  Feadship de Vries Project 1010  |  Feadship  | 118-metre

Moving away from Germany, number four on our list is  Feadship 's  Project 1010   which was first revealed as she was moved from her construction shed in October 2020.  The superyacht is the biggest vessel ever constructed by the Dutch shipyard, and since her relocation in 2020, she has been based at the shipbuilder's outfitting facility in Makkum, just outside Amsterdam. Project 1010 has been designed externally by Monaco-based designer  Espen Øino International , while, like  Luminance ,  Zuretti Interior Design  has been charged with her interior design. We believe that her volume will sit in the region of 5,000 GT.

5.  Project 6507  |  Abeking & Rasmussen  | 118-metre

Heading back to Germany, number five is  Project 6507  from  Abeking & Rasmussen  shipyard. 6507 is an exciting new superyacht, not least because her exterior lines come from the boards of  Joseph Dirand Architecture  who is a newcomer to the superyacht industry.  The keel of this new superyacht was laid in August 2019  and she will be the flagship of the shipyard until the 120.9-metre superyacht,  Project 6514 , is launched in 2025. In October  Abeking & Rasmussen  released an update on the yacht, including that  Cornelsen & Partner Yacht Consulting  have overseen her construction. The few details of the yacht that have been released infer that she will be a true adventure vessel, home to an array of water toys including a submarine.

6.  Project 724  |  Freire Shipyard  | 112-metre

From  Freire Shipyard  in Spain comes the 112-metre  Project 724  an explorer superyacht that features exterior design by British design firm  Bannenberg & Rowell Design , in collaboration with  Marin Teknikk . The yacht's interior has also been designed by  Bannenberg & Rowell Design , a studio that is well known for its work on explorer superyachts such as  Ulysses  which was launched in 2018. The yacht which has a volume just under 7,000 GT,  was first launched in July 2021 and has since been undergoing outfitting.

7.  Y720  |  Oceanco  | 109-metre

Oceanco  has been busy over the last few years producing some of the biggest superyachts ever built in the Netherlands, namely the 127-metre  Y721  and the 117-metre  Infinity   both of which were first unveiled at the tail end of last year to much acclaim . Like  Infinity ,  Y720  is due to be delivered later this year, and she features exterior and interior design from  Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design , while her naval architecture comes from the boards of  Lateral Naval Architects .

8.  Project 1601  |  Lürssen  | 90-metre

One of the most unusual yachts that should be entering the fleet this year is  Lürssen 's  Project 1601,  the first on our list below the 100 metre mark. Designed by  Espen Øino International ,  1601  is believed to belong to a well known tech entrepreneur and features a unique bow form that comes to a point in its centre. The yacht's interior is the work of  Dölker + Voges GmbH  and we estimate her volume to be around 3,600 GT.

9.  Project X  |  Golden Yachts  | 88-metre

The first yacht in the list from outside Northern Europe is  Project X , an 88-metre yacht under construction at  Golden Yachts  in Greece. The yacht has remained well under wraps but is believed to be due for delivery this year.

10.  Globalfast  |  SilverYachts  | 85-metre

Finally we have the recently renamed  Globalfast , currently under construction at SilverYachts  in Australia. She is the only yacht on this list that is still on the market and with exterior design from  Espen Øino International  and interiors by  Vain Interiors .

As the year draws to a close, we take a look back at ten of the most impressive new listings to join the market in the past 12 months.

Length: 155m

Kicking off this list is the elusive 155 metre Al Said which joined the market for the first time in 2022. Built under the codename Project Sunflower, she was launched in 2008 by German shipyard Lürssen with design by the legendary Espen Oinø . She was owned by the Sultan of Oman and was the world's second-largest yacht when she first touched the water. Standout features include 26 cabins for 70 guests, a helipad, medical room and a performance room that seats 50.

Price available on application with Blackorange Yachts .

Length: 115m

Pelorus , the former flagship of the Lürssen fleet, was revealed for the first time this year as she joined the market with SuperYachtsMonaco . Her steel hull is based on the same lines as Carinthia VII , with a high forebody and reverse sheer sweeping down towards the stern, but Pelorus features an additional line that curves down towards the bow inspired by the 'armour belt' on the HMS Belfast. Pelorus  carries seven tenders including an 11.2-metre  limo and an 8.5-metre sports tender, both by Vikal, a 10-metre X-tender rib, two Pascoe ribs including a SOLAS rib, a nine-metre Hinckley and a Zodiac.

Price available on application with SuperYachtsMonaco .

Length: 90.6m

The 90.6 metre superyacht Dubawi made waves when she joined the sales market for the first time ever in May after being listed with Worth Avenue Yachts . Initially delivered as a cruise ship, the yacht underwent a multi-million dollar refit with Platinum Yachts in 2009. The yacht has an internal volume comparable to a yacht of 100 metres or more thanks to her cruising heritage. One of her most impressive amenities is the cavernous lower deck nightclub, which features a dance floor that lights up and a state-of-the-art sound system. Meanwhile, the owner's apartment occupies an entire deck of its own.

Dubawi is asking $28,000,000 with Worth Avenue Yachts .

Length: 90m

Phoenix II was completed by Lürssen in 2010 with British studio Winch Design behind her striking exterior and dazzling interior concept. She features soaring lines, a poised silhouette and a 5.7 metre phoenix figurehead that rises up from the bow. Inside, royal reds, black lacquers and gold accents pay homage to the Art Deco movement. A favourite spot among guests is the formal dining room which is overlooked by a six-piece jazz band in custom-made gold bas-relief murals. Other highlights include a Steinway piano, cinema room, three pools and a sommelier room.

Phoenix II is asking €129,000,000 (VAT paid) with Burgess .

Length: 85.6m

B2 was one of the largest vessels at the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show sitting along the breakwater next to Project X and Ahpo in Port Hercule. She was delivered in 2009 and remains the second-largest launch by the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard. A recent four-million-euro refit saw her hull extended by seven metres allowing for a vast beach club that opens on three sides and a glass-bottom swimming pool that sits laterally across the main deck.  Accommodation is for 22 guests with an elevator serving each level right up to the sun deck.

B2 is asking €88,000,000 with Moravia Yachting .

Length: 82m

The 3,179GT Sarafsa is one of the largest boats to be built in the UK. Used only privately, she was revealed to the world for the first time this year as she joined the market. Wellness is at her core with a hammam, gym, spa pool and jacuzzi beneath a retractable roof. Other features include an 11-seat cinema, a touch-and-go helipad and storage for two large tenders.

Sarafsa is asking €65,000,000 with Burgess .

Length: 85m

Lürssen's 85 metre Aurora was one of the most expensive new listings to join the market in 2022. While she was delivered in 2017, her exterior design plays with retro themes such as circular portholes and arched windows. In a similar fashion, her interior takes inspiration from the Art Deco movement. Highlights include an observation lounge on the top deck, and fully-equipped gym with sliding glass doors that open onto the aft deck, and a Jacuzzi with a J-shaped sit-up bar nearby.

Aurora is asking €130,000,000 with Burgess .

Length : 73.1m

The second largest yacht built in North America since the Great Depression, Laurel was originally delivered in 2006 as the flagship of US yard Delta Marine. Her exterior design was penned by Donald Starkey , and is made instantly recognisable due to the hull’s royal blue colouring. The yacht’s interiors, also by Starkey, offers accommodation for 12 guests in seven cabins, including a convertible cabin that doubles as a sauna. Laurel is known for her professional dive facilities, which has made her especially popular among charter guests, with other amenities such as a jacuzzi, gym and a library that converts into a private cinema perfect for movie nights.

Laurel is asking $69,500,000 with IYC .

Length: 72m

Solo was delivered in 2018 as the flagship of the Tankoa fleet and is one of two S701 models ( Suerte was the first in the series). Her exterior and interior are the work of an all-Italian design team with Francesco Paszkowski Design and Margherita Casprini creating a modern yacht with a masculine edge. The beach club serves as one of the yacht’s key design features with natural light streaming in from a glass bottom pool above. The space is completed by a hammam room decorated with Tuscan calacatta marble, as well as a sauna that notably houses wood from a medieval castle in Finland.

Solo is asking €66,000,000 with Edmiston .

Length: 67.5m

Icon was delivered by her namesake shipyard in 2010 and joins the market for the second time in her history. She underwent an extensive refit in 2014 that extended the yacht’s overall length by five metres, creating space for a raised infinity pool with a glass bottom that filters a dappled blue light through the renovated beach club below. Icon was designed by RWD and is a true explorer with an impressive 6,000 nautical mile range, making her suited to an owner looking to cruise far and wide. On board, Studio Linse offers a “noble simplicity” with the use of neutral colours, pale woods and elegant onyx and marbles, creating a bright and contemporary space for relaxed ocean living.

Icon is asking €45,000,000 (VAT paid) with Fraser .

A New Host of Mega Yachts

Making the high seas more luxurious, written by kevin koenig, january 14, 2022.

There is perhaps no truer staple of the ultra-elite than the mega yacht. Art, diamonds, planes, perhaps a library at a NESCAC school of your choice— these things  all cost money, but few of them across the board can compete with a proper super yacht for the pure punch of opulence.

Case in point is Tilman Fertitta’s 252-foot  Feadship   Boardwalk , which dominated the docks at the  2021 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show . The Dutch-built super yacht reportedly cost $150 million, and it’s no surprise why. An  Airbus EC-130  helicopter sat on the aft portion of its top deck, leading gaggles of showgoers to crane their necks skyward.

Imagery courtesy of Francis Vermeer at Feadship

Onboard, a massive beach club had a full gym and a stocked bar that looked as if it belonged in the lobby of a five-star hotel. Art Deco design is the word of the day in the interior where muscular and geometric patterns show up everywhere, from the artwork to the bannisters. A massive swimming pool on the forward portion of the top deck is reportedly Fertitta’s favorite spot to relax. When playtime is over, he also has a fully appointed office adjacent to the master suite. After all, these boats don’t buy themselves.

Besides Boardwalk , three large Italian builds have also caught our particular interest as of late—call them a Roman triumvirate, if you will.

Imagery courtesy of Azimut Yachts of Sculati & Partners

First is the  Azimut  Grande 38 Metri Trideck. The boat’s interior, done by  Achille Salvagni , absolutely pops. Salvagni concentrated on keeping the spaces fluid, informal, and organic—so much so that he eschewed a formal dining table in favor of al fresco options complemented by a casual dining nook in the upper salon. The vessel’s namesake third deck also makes her distinct among her peers. It resides above the swim platform, and could perhaps best be described as an elevated cockpit of sorts. Extra privacy and a deep connection with the marine environment are the intention with this design.

Azimut’s sister company  Benetti  has also found time to shine, with its new B.NOW 66M Oasis . The mega yacht is notable particularly for its cockpit and beach club setup. The cockpit has massive terraces to either side that greatly expand the entertainment area. It also has an infinity pool on the aft end that peers out over a beach club that acts as the ideal setup for all water-based activities. The exterior design of the two areas is such that the cockpit seems to cascade like a waterfall down to the beach club and the waterline. It’s a striking appeal to the eye that has made the model extremely popular both in the domestic market and abroad.

Lastly, the  Sanlorenzo  62M named Cloud 9 rounds out our list. With a traditional profile opting for clean, straight lines, as opposed to the swirling and bending lines that have become en vogue as of late, the yacht harkens back to a different time (albeit not so long ago, as super-yacht design trends tend to turn on a dime). The steel-hulled beast has a Jacuzzi plunge pool on its top deck, a swimming pool on the main deck, a movie theatre, and a spa and beach club down close to the water’s surface. It is, in effect, an entertainer’s dream—and worth every cent of her reported 66-million dollar price tag.

Best luxury yacht: 7 ultimate luxury cruisers you can buy

  • Toby Hodges
  • March 14, 2024

Toby Hodges takes a look at all the nominees and the winner of the best luxury yacht category in the European Yacht of the Year Awards

The definition of the best luxury yacht will differ according to personal opinion and from boat to boat. This year’s nominees in the luxury yacht category of the European Yacht of the Year Awards proved that perfectly.

The European Yacht of the Year awards are selected by a broad panel of expert judges from across the globe. These are people who spend their professional lives sailing and comparing yachts, so you can be certain that the yachts which stand out in this field are truly the best of the best on the market.

The best luxury yachts

Best luxury yacht winner 2024 – arcona 50.

When you enter the fiercely competitive 50ft luxury performance yacht market you better get it right. And the jury felt Arcona managed that. This watershed design for the traditional Swedish brand, by X-Yachts co-founder and former designer Niels Jeppesen, is a big, contemporary new Arcona, one that sees it move away from its cruiser-racer heritage and classic interiors.

The on trend styling inside and out is backed up by a premium level of build and finish quality and sailing performance – particularly if you have the performance sails, traveller and deep (2.95m) keel options the test boat carried, although the latter does limit your berthing and anchoring options.

While I doubt it’ll be raced or will suit typical bluewater use, it offers a purity of performance push-button sailing: a handsome prospect upwind in a light breeze, it transforms into a powerful reaching machine with stacks of control.

As chairman of our jury, Jochen Rieker, puts it: “The boat certainly did not win for her somewhat borrowed looks. She wins by checking all the boxes in all other respects. Slipping along gracefully in the lightest of airs, holding her stride and her balance in more demanding conditions, offering warmth, light and this reassuring feeling of utter quality down below – there simply isn’t anything to fault.”

Contest 50CS

The Contest 50CS, for example, is an archetype luxury cruising yacht, one built to the highest standards and that could take you to most waters in impeccable comfort. This model is, uniquely, available in two versions: this more conventional 50CS with aft master cabin, or the forward owner’s suite version on the aft cockpit Contest 49CS . We ran a full test on the latter after spending two days aboard in the North Sea, where that noticeably high freeboard, which may not aid boarding nor windage, helped keep us dry on deck in a steady Force 6 gusting 7.

As the 50CS proved, this Judel/Vrolijk design keeps slipping along in the light stuff too, providing enjoyable sailing in 6 knots breeze under a code sail. The centre cockpit offers a deep protected guest area, but also links well to the spacious aft deck.

And the Wetzels-Brown-designed interiors of Contests today are stunning and hard to match. The engineering, access to usable stowage, details and finish on the 50CS is first class and to get this level of quality at this size is special.

Both Contest and X-Yachts are early adopters of hybrid power, offering their bluewater cruisers with optional electric drives. For the XC 47 this was designed-in from the start to offer Oceanvolt’s award-winning new 25kW regenerative drive.

The XC 47 is another wonderfully engineered and thought out yacht for distance cruising, in particular for those who also enjoy hands-on helming pleasure. That should come as no surprise to any X aficionados, but what really struck me most about this yacht was the stowage, and the forethought needed to create that, together with how practical it has been made.

That may sound slightly anticlimactic but ask any long-term cruiser and stowage is always a priority. On deck, this constitutes a huge lazarette and sail locker, plus clever systems for launching a dinghy via davits and a liferaft canister, while below decks every square inch of space has been used effectively, with lockers hinged with gas struts.

It’s clear the Danish yard went to considerable time and effort, even building a full mock up of the interior that could be canted 20° each way.

If the deck saloon style looks didn’t sell this model to all – this is the first full non-Jeppesen designed X – the jury were converted once they’d taken the helm. ‘Quirky’ became ‘muscular and bold’. The ease with which it can be sailed from the cockpit was also appreciated.

While I understand many offshore cruisers like a protected centre cockpit and more sun protection, the attention to detail, stowage and practicalities, combined with the direct steering, motion and enjoyable sailing this X offers make it a standout new offering.

Jeanneau Yachts 55

Meanwhile the Jeanneau Yachts 55 stands out for different, unique reasons in this category, offering a completely new concept in comfort on deck while at anchor and a novel accommodation layout. Its focus is on outdoor living space.

What helps place this in a luxury bracket is not simply the price or the creative input of superyacht specialist design duo Philppe Briand and Andrew Winch, rather that its layout creates a palatial amount of private space for the owner’s suite. Guest cabins have their own direct access from the extensive cockpit via gullwing doors.

It certainly makes sense for solo owners or couples using it as a warm water apartment. How many people this will suit is another question, as it segregates any guests, crew or children from the galley and saloon.

I used the term monocat when I first viewed it, as the 55 really does attempt to mix the two worlds, particularly in terms of providing owner privacy and lounging space. Choose the rigid hard top and windshield and there’s a vast amount of covered area including a dinette and chart table – plus a bimini can shade all that extensive aft deck too.

The penalty comes in additional weight and wetted surface, and is felt in the handling and performance, the latter particularly in lighter breeze with the optional in-mast furling, self tacking headsail and shallow draught package we had. However, it’s set up to be easily managed from the mid cockpit with good visibility from the twin helms and easy circulation thanks to the ramped side decks. Full report in YW February 2024.

Best luxury yacht 2023

Best luxury yacht winner – oyster 495.

It is hard to imagine that the decor of a yacht can change its look and feel quite this much, yet the layout of this second 495, Eddie Jordan’s dramatic looking Tuga , is in fact identical to the first boat that I spent several days aboard last summer.

At its heart is a wonderfully (Humphreys) designed and engineered luxury bluewater cruiser conceived from the ground up, built in a new dedicated facility to a repeatable quality very few yards are capable of.

The 495 offers consistent passage making speeds in real voluminous comfort – whether enjoyed from the deep cockpit or the best-in-class aft cabin. Deck stowage and mechanical space is also superb.

Then factor in the family appeal of Oyster’s after sales and world rally programme and you start to appreciate the premium world this sub 50-footer gives access to.

The first yacht fully conceived under CEO Richard Hadida’s reign, this is also the smallest completely new Oyster 495 since 2005 – and it’s a triumph. It was our September 2022 cover star in which we featured the full review from our Oyster 495 three day test .

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 60

The Oceanis Yacht 60 is a very different beast indeed to the 62 it replaces as flagship for the Beneteau range. The yard has learned plenty from the success of the First 53/OY 54 and wanted to create a 60 in this style and with the same deck layout (albeit larger and wider) and ease of circulation.

The construction experience of the smaller model clearly helped too, as this is a whopping five tonnes lighter than the bulky OY62 and with a deeper (2.6m) keel. The telling result is on the water. It feels sporty to helm and we averaged a knot slower than the single figure 6-8 knot windspeeds upwind and matched them reaching with Code 0 and a slight swell.

The vast cockpit works well, sheltered below the semi rigid bimini, it has plentiful lounging space with sailing systems led aft to the twin helms. The interior sees a 3+3 layout, where Beneteau wanted to get rid of the corridor effect of the OY62. The galley is forward to help open out space, while the forward suite with offset berth and headboard aft works well to give space with privacy.

This is an attractive, voluminous yacht that leaves a good overall impression whether under sail, on or below decks.

Ice 62 Targa

It all looks pretty funky below decks on the Ice 62 Targa too, especially if you’re watching the masthead fore and aft cameras (plus bow and prop cam) on central displays mounted in the saloon while you slip out of the dock! The Ice is a seriously impressive, contemporary yacht, one that in looks, performance and execution, won over many of the judges.

The first to launch is a highly customised project for a passionate sailing owner who covers long distances solo – he’d already sailed it 3,000 miles around the Med that autumn. It’s impressively stiff, sails handsomely and, thanks to a telescopic keel, points well. We matched single figure windspeeds, and clocked up to the high 9s in 12 knots wind.

Umberto Felci’s team spent 4,000 hours on the design, providing lots of space and light to the interior and a chillout zone in the semi raised saloon. This was easily the coolest looking yacht, with its aggressive reverse bow, chamfered gunwales and carbon T-top bimini, and all engineered and built to a high standard.

new mega yacht 2022

Due to be launched in 2024, Vard's SOMNIO is set to be the largest superyacht in the world and the first ever 'yacht-liner'. With a LOA of 222m and a gross tonnage of 33,500, she is an unprecedented feat of design and engineering set to change the course of ultra-luxury travel. Winch Design and Tillberg Design are responsible for her interior and exterior design, a layout which features 39 exquisite high-end apartments offering the perfect combination of the superyacht lifestyle and premium hotel service. Amenities onboard will be aplenty, notably a 10,000 bottle capacity wine cellar and tasting rooms, a plethora of restraurants and bars, and a beach club with top-tier water sports offerings.

  • Lurssen Yachts

On the 5th April 2013 Lürssen, the leading shipyard for large luxury yacht building, launched the 180m yacht AZZAM - the largest motor yacht in the world. The sleek and elegant superyacht features exterior design by Nauta Design.

Fulk Al Salamah

  • Mariotti Yachts

This 164-metre (538ft) superyacht was built in Italy by Mariotti Yachts and now sits in the Omani capital as part of the royal fleet. The Italian built superyacht is currently the second largest privately owned yacht in the world, after Lurssen's Azzam.

  • Blohm + Voss

Roman Abramovich's yacht Eclipse has received a huge amount of industry attention, not just for its size but for the celebrity of its owner. Eclipse is the largest and most expensive superyacht ever built. When initially ordered she was estimated to cost approximately £330million, by the time she was delivered however, her overall costs were closer to the £1billion mark due to the extra luxury fittings and security measures required by her owner. With a crew of up to 60, Eclipse is a giant of the sea. She was the fourth superyacht comissioned by Abramovich.

  • Platinum Yachts

This magnificent yacht was originally commissioned by Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei. Construction was suspended in 1998 and the vessel left unfinished until HH Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum secured the rumoured $300 million project. Platinum Yachts took the mega yacht to completion and in 2006 launched Dubai to become the world’s largest private yacht. Today however, Dubai is the second largest privately owned yacht in the world.

Launched in February 2022, Project Blue is Lurssen's latest secretive yacht project. With little revealed about her specifications and designers, her expansive size was confirmed by the German shipyard following her launch: an incredible 160m. Project Blue will be Lurssen's second-largest superyacht, and is due to be delivered in 2023. She was recently spotted in Bremerhaven, Germany, making her way out to sea for her maiden sea trial. She is expected to have a beam of 21m, and a gross tonnage of 15,320 GT. Her other specifications are currently unknown.

Originally known as Project Omar, the 156 metre superyacht Dilbar was launched in 2016 after over 4 years of construction. A favourite with yachtspotters worldwide, Dilbar is considered the largest superyacht in the world by volume.

Like most royal superyachts, little is known about Al Said, a giant mega yacht formerly codenamed "Project Sunflower". She was delivered to the Sultan of Oman in 2008 as a replacement for a smaller mega yacht of the same name. At a stunning 155m, Al Said consists of six large decks and features striking exterior and interior design by Espen Oeino International, the same company that designed the stunning 127m mega yacht Octopus. According to reports, Al Said is said to accommodate as many as 70 guests and 154 professional crew, as well as featuring a concert room capable of accommodating a 50 piece orchestra.

When construction of A+ (formerly named Topaz) first began she was forecast to be the 4th largest yacht in the world and to measure approximately 147m (482’3’’ft). Having left her floating shed at the Lürssen shipyard located in Bremen, Germany, she is now ready to claim that mantle and undergo the final phases of construction.

Prince Abdulaziz

  • Helsingor Vaerft

As one of the yachts of the Saudi Royal Family, Prince Abdulaziz is used to conduct official business as well as for pleasure. The largest yacht built in the 20th century, the interior alone took 15 months to complete. Originally built for the late King Fahd of Saudi Arabia who named the yacht after his son, it is now owned by his brother Abddullah.

Very little is known about Lurssen's mysterious superyacht OPERA. At 146m, the superyacht will be the sixth largest yacht Lurssen has built at the time of her launch in September 2022. OPERA was first spotted in May 2021 when she transported to the yard's Bremen outfitting facilities in Germany.

El Mahrousa

  • Samuda Bros.

This Egyptian presidential yacht is not only one of the world’s largest but also one of the oldest. Built in 1865 in London, the yacht was intended for the King of Egypt. Originally named Mahroussa, El Horriya was extended in 1872 and again in 1905.  Nowadays she is berthed in Alexandria and is listed as a training ship by the Egyptian Navy.

Developed by German shipyard Lürssen, construction of Project Luminance is underway at their facilities near Lemwerder. Due to enter the esteemed list of the Top 10 largest superyachts in the world, information about the 145m superyacht is limited at this moment in time. Lürssen are world-famous for their incredible innovations and their capacity to build extremely large mega yachts filled with numerous features. Photos that have been captured of the boat indicate that she will have considerable deck space with plenty of room left over indoors to be packed out with luxury.

Sailing Yacht A is a highly unique vessel, with an LOA of 142.81m. She is one of the world’s largest and the most advanced superyachts with a number of unique features, including an underwater observation pod, hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system and premium navigation systems. Her three masts are the tallest and most highly loaded freestanding composite structures in the world. Her futuristic design was created by Philippe Starck, her smooth silver-metallic surfaces challenging the expectations of conventional aesthetics.

As one of the most well-known builders of Top 100 yachts, Lurssen's NORD (formerly Opus and Redwood) has been highly anticipated as one of the largest ever to launch from the German yard. Also the largest project set to launch in 2020, at 142m, she will accommodate up to 36 guests in 20 cabins and was designed by Nuvolari Lenard.

  • ADMShipyards

The 141m superyacht Swift141, now christened 'Yas', was successfully launched by ADMShipyards in November 2011; entering the record books as both the largest launch of 2011 and most significant superyacht in recent history. ADMShipyards, members of Privinvest, has proudly announced the launch of their first superyacht. At 141 meters, this stunning private yacht ranks as the sixth largest superyacht in the world.

  • Lloyd Werft

Project Solaris is the revolutionary explorer yacht built by German masters of engineering Lloyd Werft. Topping off the yard's record for ultra large luxury yacht build, Project Solaris is an estimated 139m+ explorer yacht at the German giant's shed.

As with most yachts in construction at Lurssen, little is known about this 140m project. We do not yet know the designer or architect, but she has been spotted moving around the build-hall. Her sightings have lead yacht spotters on the docks of the yard to aptly name her 'Project Lightning.' We hope to see her launch towards the end of 2019.

Ocean Victory

  • Fincantieri Yachts

The largest yacht ever built in Italy and one of the ten largest in the world, Fincantieri has announced the successful delivery of Project Victory - a 140 metre superyacht launched in 2014 - under the official name of Ocean Victory.

Code named as Mipos (short for Mission Possible) during her construction, Al Salamah belongs to Saudi Arabian Defence Minister Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz. Kept a great secret, rumours tell that she has over 80 rooms, a helipad, and an indoor swimming pool complete with glass roof. A real working wonder, this yacht was completed in 1999 after only two years.

The trips Justice Clarence Thomas took with Harlan Crow — that we know of

  • Justice Clarence Thomas has taken several trips with GOP mega-donor Harlan Crow in recent years.
  • Democrats released new documents last week saying Thomas failed to disclose three additional trips.
  • Here is a list of the trips Thomas and Crow have taken together — that we know of.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is once again facing renewed scrutiny amid details about undisclosed trips he took with GOP mega-donor Harlan Crow .

Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee last week released documents showing Thomas failed to disclose three trips he took aboard Crow's private jet in 2017, 2019, and 2021. According to Sen. Dick Durbin, the flights were gifted to Thomas .

Thomas also recently amended his 2019 financial disclosure to include two vacations paid for by Crow, according to ProPublica, that year to Indonesia and the Bohemian Grove, an exclusive gentleman's club in Monte Rio, California. ProPublica first reported on the undisclosed trips last year.

The justice has defended the missing disclosures, saying he was advised that disclosing hospitality gifts from people who had no business before the court was unnecessary.

Thomas and Crow have been friends for more than thirty years. Both have said they don't talk about politics or legal cases together, but legal experts and lawmakers have expressed ethics concerns that Crow could have an influence on Thomas, a sitting member of the most powerful court in the country.

Michael Zona, a spokesperson for Crow, told BI the billionaire provided information relevant to the Senate Judiciary Committee's requests going back seven years.

"Despite his serious and continued concerns about the legality and necessity of the inquiry, Mr. Crow engaged in good faith negotiations with the Committee from the beginning to resolve the matter," the statement said. "As a condition of this agreement, the Committee agreed to end its probe with respect to Mr. Crow."

An attorney for Thomas, Elliot S. Berke, told Business Insider the vacation information Crow provided to the Senate Judiciary Committee falls under the "personal hospitality exemption," which means it did not need to be disclosed.

"The Judicial Conference changed this provision last year, and Justice Thomas has fully complied with the new disclosure requirement," Berke said.

The Supreme Court did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

May 2017: Montana trip

On May 7, 2017, Thomas traveled on Crow's private jet from St. Louis to Kalispell, Montana, a small mountain town known as a gateway to Glacier National Park .

According to documents released by Senate Democrats last week, the Montana excursion is among the three previously unknown trips that Thomas failed to disclose.

It remains unclear what Thomas was doing in Montana; BI could not identify any public appearances the justice made in the state at that time.

On May 9, 2017, Crow's jet left Montana for Dallas, where the billionaire resides. Beyond the flight on Crow's jet, it's unclear how much of the trip Crow paid for.

July 2017: Camp Topridge in upstate New York

ProPublica reported last year that Thomas has vacationed at Crow's lakeside resort, Camp Topridge, nearly every year for the last two decades. The secluded property is located in the Adirondacks in upstate New York and is only accessible by invitation from the billionaire himself.

According to the outlet, Topridge guests are treated to meals prepared by private chefs, guided fishing experiences, and private concerts.

During a July 2017 Topridge trip, Thomas and Crow were joined by an array of corporate leaders and political activists, including major Republican donors and executives from Verizon and PricewaterhouseCoopers, ProPublica reported.

Thomas even appears in a painting hung at the resort, which shows the Supreme Court justice conversing with conservative legal activist Leonard Leo, according to the outlet.

March 2019: Savannah, Georgia

Thomas's quick round trip to his hometown of Savannah, Georgia , was the second undisclosed trip revealed last week. It wasn't clear what Thomas was doing in Georgia, but he still has family members living there, including his mother.

July 2019: Bali, Indonesia

Thomas and Crow's 2019 Bali vacation was the centerpiece of ProPublica's original 2023 report. Although first reported last year, disclosure details about the Indonesia trip were included in recently amended financial disclosure forms and the Judiciary Committee's report.

According to ProPublica, Thomas and his wife, Ginni Thomas , spent nine days vacationing with Crow and others as they sightsaw on several islands and spent time on the billionaire's 162-foot superyacht, the Michaela Rose.

July 2019: Bohemian Grove, California

Thomas amended past filings to include a 2019 vacation he took with Crow to Bohemian Grove , an exclusive, all-male club in Monte Rio, California.

ProPublica previously reported on Thomas' trips to the gentleman's retreat. The club's prestigious alumni include US presidents, military officials, artists, and top business leaders.

June 2021: Northern California

On June 29, 2021, Thomas traveled from Washington, DC, to San Jose, California, aboard Crow's jet, The Washington Post reported. He returned to DC the same day. The reason for the trip remains unknown.

July 2022: Camp Topridge (again)

On July 7, 2022, Thomas again boarded Crow's plane to travel to Camp Topridge — possibly for his annual summer vacation at his billionaire buddy's hideaway, ProPublica reported last year.

Other suspected trips

ProPublica said Thomas cruised through New Zealand aboard Crow's superyacht roughly a decade ago. The outlet reported that the Supreme Court Justice also boarded the Michaela Rose for a river cruise around Savannah, Georgia. A photo of Thomas donning an embroidered shirt referencing a 2007 trip through the Greek Islands suggests the justice may have also vacationed in the Mediterranean.

Thomas has also made frequent use of Crow's private jet for quick day trips and business travel, according to media reports.

The Adams administration is seeking bids on two emergency contracts for a slew of migrant services — days after The Post revealed DocGo was being paid nearly $41 million to run a Queens mega-site.

The filing for competitive offers was sent to the Big Apple’s comptroller Tuesday as part of the city’s shift away from the no-bid contracts, which have historically come in higher than the market rate but the administration had heavily relied upon to deal with the crush of asylum-seekers since the spring of 2022.

“The [Request For Proposal] we’re putting out today will help us find even more savings, making sure we get the most out of every taxpayer dollar,” Adams said.

Mayor Eric Adams

The news comes a week after The Post revealed details of the nearly $41 million deal for DocGo to manage one of the city’s largest migrant shelter sites at Austell Place in Long Island City , Queens, since last September.

That no-bid deal ends in October and is up for grabs in the official RFP — along with the company’s other controversial $432 million contract.

Overall, the contracts currently cover 13 makeshift shelters with 2,400 migrants in the Big Apple and another 2,600 in 13 hotels upstate.

City Comptroller Brad Lander, who has held up the sizable DocGo deal as a key problem with the Adams administration’s emergency contracting and leveraged it to roll back the powers , hailed the decision as a move to “better prices, better oversight, and better vendors.

“After two years, it is good to finally see the Adams Administration move toward replacing expiring emergency contracts for asylum seeker services with vendors selected through a competitive bid process,” his office said in a statement.

It was unclear if DocGo would try its hand again at running the asylum seeker services in and around the Big Apple after being accused of mistreatment and food waste during a political firestorm over the migrant crisis.

“We will review the RFP and determine whether to re-bid,” a rep for the company said, adding, “Welcome a competitive bidding process.

“We have competed for many contracts under a competitive process, and our track record and competitive pricing are key factors in our ability to win these assignments.”

Advertising and media elite return to cannes lions, as mega-yachts pull up to french riviera.

French Riviera

Mega-yachts are dropping anchor in the deep-blue waters of the Mediterranean as media, advertising and tech industry elite prepare to talk shop, broker deals and schmooze over copious amounts of rosé at the 2024 Cannes Lions Festival .

The boozy week-long event, known as the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity , is roaring back this week for its 71st year — and despite an uncertain economic landscape — it’s sure to be a spirited time.

“We are feeling that there’s an intensified amount of interest in this year’s festival overall,” said Christopher Vollmer, managing director of MediaLink and partner at UTA. “But I think there’s a lot of uncertainty about the economy in some sectors. Overall, it’s relatively good in a lot of sectors and there’s questions about how sustainable it is.”

Cannes Lions

Headlining speakers for the five-day fest, which starts Monday, include Mattel chairman and chief executive officer Ynon Kreiz, who will grab the Entertainment Person of the Year Award.

Havas chief creative officer and former co-vice chairman Jacques Séguéla — a French advertising legend — at 90 years old will be honored with a lifetime achievement award.

Other buzzy speakers include Deepak Chopra, Queen Latifah and Jay Shetty.

 Ynon Kreiz

But most of the action will take place outside of the Palais, the festival’s main hub, and spill over to La Croissette, the beachside main drag where companies will hold talks on the hottest topics plaguing marketers.

Medialink’s Vollmer — whose media and advertising advisory firm is hosting a series of panels on creativity, commerce and culture, as well as co-hosting one of the buzziest, exclusive bash’s at the famed Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc — cited a fragmented landscape.

With budgets tightening in the tech, media and advertising industries, not to mention geopolitical concerns, and the presidential elections coming in the fall, Vollmer said brands are evaluating how they can get the biggest bang for their buck.

“There’s a continued push for brands to find ways that connect and pop with consumers,” he said, explaining that chief marketing officers are increasingly being asked to do more with less due in part, to the “lower growth” economic environment.

“It’s becoming harder to break through the noise so developing, harnessing and speaking directly to your community while attentively listening is more important than ever,” echoed Josh Rosenberg, CEO of creative communications firm, Day One Agency.

Cannes Lions

Both men pointed to artificial intelligence and how the technology’s use is evolving and being incorporated into workflow as opposed to last year, when much of the talk of AI took a more fearful tone about how it could replace jobs.

“Over the past year, it has become more clear on where AI will be able to help the industry become more efficient while also helping with inspiration,” Rosenberg said, noting the tech is limited.

“It has also made us realize that while AI can offer support, AI cannot determine taste. Even in this age of AI, we’re still investing in creativity — because we believe creativity and connection to the consumer will always win over any machine,” he added.

Queen Latifah

Another topic on marketers’ minds is how to reach younger generations.

With the fate of TikTok hanging in the balance — after President Biden signed a bill into law in April mandating the platform’s parent Byte Dance sell TikTok in six months or have it banned in the US — brands and creatives are wondering how that could impact their reach with millennials, Gen Z and Gen Alpha consumers.

TikTok has waged a legal war over the law, which was driven by widespread worries among US lawmakers that China could access Americans’ data or surveil them with the app.

 Jay Shetty

But TikTok also is a robust money-maker for over 7 million businesses, not to mention the 170 million American users on the platform, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew recently said .

Rosenberg said he’s “watching the news closely,” adding, “It is an important channel for our clients and for us as an agency. What I do know is that we will always go where the consumer goes. If there is no TikTok, we will look closely where the consumers are. Our philosophy has always been to work with clients to build brand strategies and campaigns in the place and spaces where their consumers live.”

Aside from TikTok — which will once again take over the courtyard at the Carlton Hotel where it will host panels on how to maximize content on the platform — athletes will be in the spotlight in a big way.

Cannes Lions

Sports stars will take center stage at events held by Axios, Medialink and Stagwell, addressing a variety of topics from the creator economy and technology and the rise of women’s sports and mental health.

Stagwell is back with its popular Sport Beach this year, which includes a basketball court, bleachers, sand pit and climbing wall. It’ll have the biggest sports-centric programming at Cannes, hosting over 30 athletes, including Travis and Jason Kelce , Carmelo Anthony, Megan Rapinoe and Blake Griffin.

According to Stagwell chief brand and communications officer Beth Sidhu, the concept came from the COVID era, when people were unable to attend live events like sports games. Post-pandemic, consumers came roaring back to concerts and sporting events. The Stagwell team noticed that although there was great demand for sports, there wasn’t much representation of athletes at Cannes Lions.

Paris Hilton

“There are lots of audience passion points and sports is absolutely a passion point for a lot of people,” Sidhu said.

The exec added that it isn’t just fans and advertisers that want to get in on the sports craze, but also athletes themselves, many of whom have become serious content creators and mini-media moguls.

The issue athletes and marketers face is connecting in a meaningful way, as well as having conversations about how they can work together, she said.

“We are passionate about putting world class athletes with world class marketers,” she told us.

More broadly, Cannes Lions’ top brass has also noticed the heightened interest in creators.

For the first time, the event will host the Cannes Lions Creators Festival from June 18-20, where creators can mingle and share ideas with marketers and creatives.

“Creators are getting followed on social media. They intersect with sports and music and are some of the first people taking advantage of new technologies like AI,” Medialink’s Vollmer said. “There will be more and more of this as video production continues to democratize the landscape.”

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

new mega yacht 2022

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

new mega yacht 2022

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

new mega yacht 2022

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

new mega yacht 2022

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

new mega yacht 2022

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

new mega yacht 2022

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
