A Bold, Sea-Worthy Chronograph From the 1960s Returns

Yema’s new limited edition is a (mostly) faithful recreation of the 1960s original.

YEMA-YACHTINGRAF-gear-patrol-full-lead

By Andrew Connor

French watchmaker Yema is not well-known outside of enthusiasts circles, where their vintage pieces are considered both iconic and great value for money, but the brand is still manufacturing timepieces today. In fact, it’s Yema’s 70th anniversary, and the company celebrating with a series of super-accurate reissues of some of its most iconic vintage models. We’ve already seen this with the brand’s Superman Heritage , but now Yema is reviving the Yachtingraf, an old-school regatta chronograph with a hell of a lot of charm.

Yema introduced the Yachtingraf in the late ’60s, and it was notable for its bold minutes register. The colorful scale within actually has a particular purpose: in a regatta, a five-minute countdown is required before the race, and the scale makes it easy to read off minutes on the chronograph function in five-minute intervals. I don’t doubt that very few people reading this would actually use the regatta counter for its intended purpose (though if you do, kudos to you and your sweet yacht), but the red-white-and-blue register undoubtedly looks cool as hell.

Like the Superman Heritage, this new reissue remains fairly faithful to the original. The colorful registers remain intact, as does the rotating bezel. Even the case is just 39mm wide, only a smidge bigger than the 38mm original , and it’s still water-resistant to 100 meters. There is one major departure, though: an automatic Valjoux 7750 replaces the original watch’s manual-winding Valjoux caliber. Given that the 7750 is well-known for its chunky proportions, the resulting watch is a bit over 15mm thick.

Still, this is an excellent execution of a classic design, and the best part is that it’s relatively reasonably priced: you can pick it up for just $3,274, though Yema will only produce 1,948 examples.

YEMA, French Watchmaker founded in 1948, is pleased to announce the launch of the  Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition . Entirely designed and manufactured in Morteau and the Franco-Swiss Jura valley around our workshops, this  collector’s timepiece with high-end finishes available in steel and bronze editions and limited to 75 numbered copies eac h, marks the 75th anniversary of YEMA and its gradual transition towards a vertically integrated watchmaking Manufacture.

This masterpiece is powered by  an exceptional hand-wound tourbillon caliber  designed by Olivier Mory, a renowned French Watchmaker Developer based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, which offers unprecedented performance and complications.

Maréographe complications

The Maréographe consists of a tide complication placed in an elegant register. To make this magnificent phenomenon of nature visible, an elegant small hand indicates high and low tides by making gradual halfrevolutions every 6h 12m 7.89s (change from high tide to low tide and vice versa) and a full revolution every 12h 25m 15.79s.

A dynamic regional watchmaking ecosystem

YEMA workshops are based in Morteau, the cradle of French watchmaking, a few steps from the Swiss watchmaking region. This cross-border watchmaking community concentrated along the Jura mountains has gradually transformed into a true regional ecosystem recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2020.

All tourbillon movement components, including the watch case, dial, and hands, are manufactured in France and Switzerland within a range of 72km from Morteau by recognized craftsman in fine watchmaking. The caliber bridges and mainplates are manufactured in YEMA’s workshops in Morteau where final assembly of all components takes place.

Tool watch revolution: luxury meets functionality

montre yema yachtingraf vintage

“ The Yachtingraf Tourbillon Maréographe has been designed for purpose, a true tool watch able to withstand the harshest conditions. It features a double dome sapphire crystal, a unidirectional count-up sapphire bezel, 10 ATM water-resistance, high anti-magnetic resistance (2,000 Gauss) and shock-resistance (5,000G) as well as an innovative tide indication complication animated by an exceptional and precise tourbillon caliber offering over 4 days power reserve. This unique set of features is uncommon since tourbillon watches are mostly designed as watchmaking art pieces that are delicate in their utilization. This is one of the rarest tourbillons built for daily use, a luxury timepiece that is as rugged and functional as it is beautiful and refined, a tool watch in the lineage of YEMA watches. “ CHRISTOPHER BÔLE – CEO & HEAD OF DESIGN

Revival of the historic French watchmaking know-how

“With the latest CMM.30 tourbillon and CMM.20 micro-rotor calibers, YEMA aims to display its watchmaking savoir-faire in its quest for transitioning towards a watchmaking Manufacture operating model. Leveraging from the advanced manufacturing and production methods implemented during the past two years, YEMA will soon release its upcoming 3-hands Manufacture caliber, the CMM.10.” OLIVIER MORY – WATCHMAKER DEVELOPER

Double dome sapphire bezel & crystal

The unidirectional rotating bezel is characterized by its luxurious finishes. It is crafted from scratch-resistant, slightly domed sapphire, requiring a much more sophisticated and time-consuming manufacturing process. The bezel is completed by an insert with a minimalist 0-60 graduation and a luminescent marker at noon.

This collector’s timepiece is also equipped with a high-quality double-domed sapphire crystal 2.20 mm high, offering better readability, increased resistance and a resolutely vintage appearance.

Yachtingraph iconic dial

The dial takes inspiration from the aesthetic codes of the 1970’s Yachtingraf iconic model. It features a sunray black finish with applied markers coated with Super-LumiNova and a colorful Maréographe register reminiscent of the regatta-style Yachtingraf vintage model completed with a tides indicator in the form of a small hand gracefully decorated with YEMA’s logo. The 60-second tourbillon boasts a mesmerizing kinetic spectacle for the wearer as it beats and turns against the partially open dial.

Steel/Bronze case & sapphire display caseback

The case design combines both sportiness and elegance while ensuring a 10 BAR water resistance. Available in steel or bronze, it features different finishes with vertical brushing and polished beveled lugs and a circular brushed bezel. With a 42.5mm contained diameter and a 12.3mm thickness (14.5mm including the double-domed sapphire crystal), it offers balanced proportions for such a timepiece. The 20mm lug allows a wide choice of bracelets. The transparent exhibition caseback reveals the beating heart, it shows off the distinctive architecture of the CMM.30 tourbillon caliber creating a fascinating experience for the true enthusiast. The caseback outer ring is engraved with a unique Limited Edition number (XX/75) and a serial number (XXX-XXX).

FKM Viton® rubber bracelet

Tourbillion calibre

Invented by French horologist Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1795, the tourbillon is an advanced regulating organ present in certain high-end mechanical watches, intended to improve the precision of timepieces. It consists of a rotating cage containing the balance wheel and its hairspring, the escape wheel, the lever and the second wheel which drives it. The cage rotates 360 degrees every 60 seconds, which counteracts the effects of gravity and reduces any positional errors of accuracy. The tourbillon embodies watchmaking know-how, only a few Manufactures master the creation of this caliber masterpiece.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition This collector's timepiece is also equipped with a high-quality double-domed sapphire crystal 2.20 mm high, offering better readability, increased resistance and a resolutely vintage appearance.

Own design locally manufactured

The Calibre Manufacture Morteau 30 (CMM.30) tourbillon unique’s design offers high performance thanks to its clever architecture and high-quality Franco-Swiss components. Entirely designed and developed by Olivier Mory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the regulating organs are manufactured in Switzerland while the bridges and mainplates are manufactured by YEMA in its Morteau workshops.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition

France-Swiss accuracy

With its Swiss regulating part, the CMM.30 tourbillon is a high-precision movement ensuring high performance. The free-sprung balance wheel regulates isochronism for lasting precision and stability. In the absence of a regulator, the durability of the hairspring is increased, as is long-term precision. Adjusted in 6 positions, the CMM.30 ensures an accuracy of –3 and +7 seconds per day.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition

105 hours of power reserve thanks to a large barrel

The CMM.30 has a single large barrel optimized to ensure a power reserve of 105 hours. Specifically manufactured for the CMM.30 by Générale Ressorts, this large barrel is off-centered in order to make enough room for the gears and the balance wheel so as to preserve a contained thickness.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition

Optimised escapement

Interface between the gear train and the regulating organ, the escapement is the place where energy and chronometry intersect in a complex interaction. The escapement is an energy-demanding system, it alone consumes more than half of the barrels’ energy. It is the friction of the anchor pallets on the anchor which, despite their lubrication, dissipates a good part of this energy.

The CMM.30 tourbillon escapement presents notable improvements which reduce this friction thanks to an innovating and particularly sophisticated manufacturing process (LiGA technology). This advanced escapement ensures optimization of the entire mechanics, precision and longevity of the caliber components.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition

Antimanetic and shock-resistant

Designed for everyday life, the CMM.30 presents robust technical characteristics for a tourbillon caliber. Equipped with non-magnetic components, such as a Swiss-made non-metallic alloy hairspring, a Glucydur balance wheel with an adjustment mass made in gold and micro-components manufactured with LiGA technology materials, the CMM.30 is capable of withstanding exposures to electromagnetic fields up to 2,000 Gauss, a real feat for a tourbillon caliber.

The architecture of the tourbillon cage bridge with its free-sprung balance wheel and the shock absorbers manufactured by Kif make the CMM.30 impervious to shocks, vibrations, and acceleration up to 5,000 Gs in all directions.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe 75th Anniversary Limited Edition This collector's timepiece is also equipped with a high-quality double-domed sapphire crystal 2.20 mm high, offering better readability, increased resistance and a resolutely vintage appearance.

YEMA Yachtingraf – THE COMPENDIUM

Yema – a wellknown brand in France, got a eventful history with some take-over. In the 60s Yema produced 300.000 watches per year.

1963 was launched the “Superman”, a 300m water-resistant Watch for professional diver.

1966/67 sold about 400.000 Yema watches. 1968 they constructed the 200m water-resistant Yachtingraf, with Valjoux movement.

The company still exist in other hands till today and produced Yachting watches with Quartz movement in the 80s till now. The Team of the Americas Cup (Marc Pajot, 1991) took the time with Yema watches for example.

But here is the overview of the Yachtingraf watches with real movements.  Feel free to send all comments, facts and things about them if you can add some information please!

There are 7 different main executions of Yachtingraf:

1. 1966 yachtingraf valjoux 92, the first, very rare to find.

Yachtingrafs with differend brand on the dial.

Some dials are known with different brands printed on.

Interesting one found on eBay in Uruguay – Yachtingraf with brand LIDER. Serial doesn´t fit in the line of 2compax Yachtingrafs.

Lider seems to be a brand of Borel Fiels & Cie. SA from Neuchatel, Switzerland or Montres Leader SA. Keep on research.

About the quality and known issues of Yema Yachtingraf watches

Just my point of view, please. Feel free to send my comments if you know something better. Just in case you looking for one to buy these points may help you. The Yema Yachtingraf watches got mostly problems on:

– pushers (not available, normaly screwed in but mostly glued with metall glue) – lumen (uneven made) and many are bad relumed – cases often polished to death – glasses not to find as NOS, no good substitutes – hands are not to find if there are not the original ones – dials could have paintloss or paint bumpinesses (subdials left too!) – bakelitbezels are mostly losses the paint (but that´s not a yema thing alone) – Alubezels are mostly sold as NOS on ebay from France as 70s, they fit perfect and looks good. You can see if it is a “NOS” one on the green triangle at 12, it looks different to the old ones – numbers on the casebacks: different, earlier seems to be upcounting, later ones got mostly the same numbers, unsure about some numbers too (Yema seems to put the numbers on other models too, still to prove) – unbranded bridges / movements – maybe an advantage for doing the service but you will never know if the movement is original built in the watch, only some LeJour got signed bridges

About the different mounted regattahands on the subdial

Wonder why 50% of all bubbles looks to 12 and the other half looks to 6? Simple explaination but very good usability for different types of the regatta countdown (5/10 or 15 min) you find here at the Club Yema , Jerry found out!

About the movements

Just to know: Valjoux 7730 is the 1966 following movement to the Venus 188 (built from 1948-1966) after the take-over of Venus from Valjoux in 1966. The main difference is the cheaper cam-switching instead of high-end column wheel. Yema was one of the first that uses the Valjoux 7730/7734/7736 as substitute for Valjoux 92/72.

Variants: height: 6,00/6,65 mm | diameter 14 line (31mm) | 45 hrs power reserve | 17 rubins | 28.900 A/h (4Hz) – all variants were built over 2Mio. pieces

7730: basic version, built 1966 – 1973, 175k pieces 7731: like 7730 but with new balance piston 7733: redesigned 7731 in 1969 with different reset hammers 7733S: 7733 with regatta-module disc drive 7734: date wheel, not quickset 7736: chronograph with 12 hrs counter (built 1969-1978) 7737: with 10min regatta countdown (for example in Memosail)

Trying to specify the production years with movements for the Yachtingrafs. Help is needed here for the research.

first to last:

1966 – ???? V92 1966/67 – ???? V7730 (following V92) and later 7733 (starting when 1969 with launch of the movement – ????) 1966/67 – ???? V7734 Date 1966/67 – ???? V72 Croisiere 1969 – ???? V7736 (following the V72 Croisiere) 1969/70 – ???? 7733S Regate “white ship” 1970 – ???? 7733S Regate “blue ship”

Next to the Yachting Chronographs there are the well-known Car-Racing Chronographs – the Rallygraf and the Chronograph for the pilots Flygraf (1970).

FRENCH WATCHMAKING TRADITION SINCE 1948

From our Morteau workshops, the historic cradle of watchmaking in the Jura mountains, experienced French watchmakers manufacture professional watches to equip the military, astronauts, sportsmen and explorers who achieve the extraordinary under the most extreme conditions with a YEMA tool watch on their wrist.

LOCAL PRODUCTION

Over the past few years, YEMA has made significant investments aimed at insourcing a good part of its production and constantly improving the quality of its manufacturing processes by implementing latest equipment as well as expanding and modernising its workshops and production lines. In addition, YEMA now works with new local partners in France and Switzerland within a range of 72km of its workshops, to secure a more responsible and higher quality production.

A DYNAMIC REGIONAL WATCHMAKING ECOSYSTEM

YEMA workshops are based in Morteau, the cradle of French watchmaking, a few steps from the Swiss watchmaking region. This cross-border watchmaking community concentrated along the Jura mountains has gradually transformed into a true regional watchmaking ecosystem recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO in 2020.

7 MOST extravagant houses of 19th century Moscow

montre yema yachtingraf vintage

1. The Levenson House, Trekhprudnyi Lane, 9

The lantern above the Levenson House

The lantern above the Levenson House

This house, designed by architect Fyodor Shekhtel, was built for Alexander Levenson, the proprietor of a famous Moscow typography, in 1900. The house had space for printing machines, as well as living premises. The highlight of the house is a fascinating roof lantern. Recently, the house was scientifically restored and is now for sale. The 1,000-sq.m. building’s price tag is 1.1 billion rubles (approx. $14.4 mln).

2. The Zimins House, Degtyarny Lane, 8/3

What seems an ordinary house from the outside is really one of the poshest mansions of 19th century Moscow, built for Nikolay Zimin, a major Russian tobacco trader. Built in 1896 according to the project by Edmund Yuditsky, it still houses the original interior decoration. Russian cinema buffs might recognize it from the movie ‘Brat-2’, directed by Alexey Balabanov.

Currently, the building houses the Agency for the Management and Use of Historical and Cultural Monuments of the Ministry of Culture of Russia – some of the foremost specialists in heritage preservation in the country.

3. The Igumnov House, Bolshaya Yakimanka Street, 43

The Igumnov House

The Igumnov House

This house looks like a palace right out of a Russian fairytale, but it was actually built in 1895 (designed by architect Nikolay Pozdneev), at the order of Nikolay Igumnov, a textile tycoon from Yaroslavl.

The bricks were shipped in from the Netherlands, the fascinating porcelain facade tiles made following a special order at the Kuznetsov porcelain factory, the most famous in Russia at the time. The cost of the house was allegedly around 1 million rubles (when 150 rubles was a solid year’s salary). Inside, the 40 rooms of the house were decorated in a variety of styles – from traditional Russian to art nouveau.

The interior design was made by a famous painter Mikhail Vrubel, who made several murals inspired by chivalry aesthetics of Medieval Europe, resonating with the neo-gothic style of the house.

5. The Vtorov Mansion (Spaso House), Spasopeskovskaya Square

Spaso-House from the outside

This mansion, commissioned by textile industrialist Nikolay Vtorov, was built in 1913. It takes its English name, Spaso House, from Spasopeskovskaya Square, where it is located. It’s a neo-classical recreation of a classic upper-class city mansion of the 1820s, with palladian windows and a perfectly symmetrical interior plan.

Vtorov’s family lived in the house for just 4 years before the Revolution, after which the house was expropriated by the new Soviet government to serve as a reception house for the All-Russia Central Executive Committee.

In 1933, the house became the residence of William C. Bullitt, the first U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union, and has stayed the residence of the U.S. ambassadors ever since. Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan all stayed there when they visited Moscow.

The Ryabushinski Mansion

The Ryabushinski Mansion

This mansion, again built by Fyodor Shekhtel, this time for millionaire Stepan Ryabushinsky in 1900-1902, is probably the architect’s most famous work in Moscow. Apart from all the fascinating art nouveau interior decoration and the famous stairwell with a jellyfish lamp, the mansion also housed a secret chapel – the Ryabushinskis were Old Believers, outlawed in Russia until 1905. “I believe that in the whole of Europe there is no house like this,” Ryabushinski said when examining the newly-built mansion.

After 1917, when the Ryabushinsky family fled Russia, the house became the state’s property and, in 1931, writer Maxim Gorky and his family started living there. Gorky didn’t like the mansion at all, calling it “awkward, but fit for working at least”. After Gorky’s death, the mansion became Maxim Gorky’s personal museum, which helped preserve the unique interiors of the house to the present day.

Constructed in 1897 by Pyotr Boytsov, the house was commissioned by a businessman named Sergey Berg. It comprises different styles – gothic, baroque and art nouveau. Berg’s mansion was one of the first Moscow homes to have electricity installed – lighting and an electric doorbell. It was here that the first “electric ball” was held.

The house, which had preserved all its original interior decoration, was renovated in 2016. It currently houses the Italian Embassy in Russia.

Sights in Khamovniki District

Moscow’s central district of Khamovniki is situated directly south-west of the centre and south of the Arbat District  within a curve of the River Moskva. Its is considered a rather elite district of Moscow. Its main streets are Ulitsa Volkhonka which branches off into Ulitsa Preschistenka and Ulitsa Ostozhenka. After the Garden Ring, which is made up here by Zubovsky Bulvar and Krimsky Bridge, the two streets become Ulitsa Bolshaya Pirogovskaya and Komsomolsky Prospekt respectively. The very tip of Khamovniki is located beyond the Third Ring Road and is occupied by the Luzhniki Olympic Complex.  The district is served by Kropotkinskaya to Vorobyovy Gory metro stations on the red line.

St Elijah the Prophet's Church on Obydensky Pereulok, which is just off Ulitsa Ostozhenka, is often simply referred to as St Elijah Obydensky Church. I'm going to throw "D2H" out there as a new way to gauge the height-width proportions of a watch. For the Yema Yachtingraf, it's 39 mm wide (same as the vintage model) by 15.35 mm tall (vintage was 14 mm), meaning it has a D2H of 2.54mm and looks like a damn cupcake from the side. It's seriously tall for its diameter. Very tall.
