MONACO, MONACO - SEPTEMBER 27: Yachts are displayed at the Hercules Port in Monaco for the 27th ... [+] edition of the International Monaco Yacht Show on September 27, 2017 in Monaco, Monaco. The Monaco Yacht Show is considered the most prestigious pleasure boat show in the world with the exhibition of 500 major companies in luxury yachting and a hundred super and megayachts. (Photo by Patrick Aventurier/Getty Images)

After the cancellation of the 2020 edition, Monaco Yacht Show 2021 came back with a splash. The event may not have experienced record attendance but with 100 superyachts on show, worth a total of $3.6 billion, and a strong roster of exhibitors reporting keen interest from clients, it surpassed most expectations. After a week reporting on the ground at show, several learnings emerged.

Yacht ownership is back – in a big way

Many shipyards are anticipating their most successful year for decades. Italian builder Ferretti Group, for instance, revealed that in the first six months of 2021, its revenues represented around 75% of the entire 2020 turnover. They’re expecting to end the year on a +50% high. Meanwhile, Dutch builder Heesen reported a strong order book with 97% output capacity.

The reason for an increase in demand, suggests Heesen CEO Arthur Brouwer, is the strengthening of a global economy and a 32% increase in the number of billionaires worldwide. Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, echoed this sentiment, adding that during the pandemic, owners and potential owners have realised the value of a yacht as their own “private island”.

Hybrids are set to be the new normal

‘Hybrid’ was the word on everyone’s lips, with numerous announcements across the board. Heesen Yachts announced it will, for the first time, make its entire fleet capable of featuring hybrid solutions. Likewise, Italian builder Benetti , which made a promise to increased its commitment to electric-diesel propulsion, also announced its intention to offer hybrid options across its entire range.

Hydrogen is coming – slowly

During the show, Italian superyacht builder Baglietto  unveiled an ambitious BZERO project which converts seawater into power. The innovative propulsion system will integrate hydrogen fuel technology into its hybrid hybrid yachts, which can be activated in zero-emissions mode. The aim is to launch a hybrid seawater-powered yacht by 2025 – the prototype is anticipated to be revealed in 2022.

Design trends remained unaffected by the pandemic

Design was impacted less by the pandemic and more by growing trends which the crisis simply exacerbated. We’re talking lots of glass – from the frameless glass that serves as outer walls on the owner’s deck on Artefact by German builder Nobiskrug , to the 270-degree uninterrupted views in the owner’s cabin, unusually set in the hull of the WHY200 by Monaco-based Wally – and proximity to the water – this year we saw a number of flush aft decks create a fluid inside-out experience. Wellness is also key. Italian builder Tankoa Yachts ’ new concept yacht Apache, designed by Alberto Mancini , features incredible water features such as a “flying pool” on the upper deck. Meanwhile the 85m Victorious, available for sale and charter through Burgess , features a beach club that’s more impressive than many hotel spas.

The charter market is booming

Today, there are about 2,900 yachts above 24m available for charter in the world. Demand for chartering was strong in 2020 and figures show it’s been stronger yet this year – although insider reveal that bookings are often more last-minute than usual due to uncertainty over travel restrictions. Fraser reveals that in 2021 so far, its fleet (which comprises 84 yachts of 24m and up) has seen an increase in bookings of 46% on last year – up just over 20% on average. They’re anticipating a busy winter season with almost 2,000 days booked onboard its fleet already.

Some of the best charter yachts on display at the show included Ragnar and Victorious, managed by Burgess ; Moskito and Tatiana, managed by IYC ( International Yacht Collection ); K2 and Yersin, managed by Fraser ; and Tranquility, managed by Camper & Nicholsons .

Monaco Yacht Show organisers listened and learnt

The 2021 show was purposefully smaller than usual. SYBAss  (Superyacht Builders Association) secretary general Theo Hooning revealed that following the events of previous years, a number of key participants and brands came together to write a letter to show organisers Informa in which they demanded several changes. It appears that organisers listened. Multiple brands we spoke with confirmed the calibre of attendees had improved on previous years, with the bulk of visitors comprising clients and suppliers. On the ground, meanwhile, there was more space to move around, although restricted onboard visits meant less flexible schedules and reduced access. Likewise, Covid regulations meant many of the usual events – a key part of the networking aspect of the show – were unable to take place. Companies such as Ferretti Group made up for this by hosting owners’ events in advance of the show.

Is there a bubble on the horizon?

Insiders tell mixed stories of concern over a 2008-style pending bubble burst – perhaps within two years, one contact suggested – while others boast of strong demand and increasingly sustainable businesses practices set to secure the industry for decades to come. But one thing is for certain: the superyacht industry is on the cusp of an upwards curve which will lead to unprecedented success, in the short term at least.

Monaco Yacht Show

The Monaco Yacht Show returns this year for its 32nd edition with a stellar lineup of yachts. The newly refitted 319-foot Carinthia VII and the head-turning 312-foot Kismet are two of the largest yachts confirmed to attend, while this year’s debuts include a dozen-plus new launches that may not be as large as some of the brokerage and charter gigayachts at the show but are still an impressive group in terms of design.

The newbies also seem to be broken out into distinctive colors this year, with the 262-foot scarlet-red Leona being the largest launch at the show, while the 174-foot Jewels , with its sky-blue hull will also stand out. Damen’s Bad Company Support has neon-pink lettering on the side, while Anjelif has a gold exterior, and Grey has a black superstructure and light-gray hull.

The Monaco event is the biggest yachting show to take place throughout Europe and the marquis event in the superyacht world. The organizers have been working hard to promote environmental innovations and educational trends taking place within yachting. The show will have design and innovation hubs, sustainability hub, and an adventure area. Of course, the big stars will be the fleet of 120 superyachts in Port Hercules.

Here are the 10 launches that we will definitely be visiting at the show.

‘Leona’ | Bilgin Yachts

monaco yacht show stand

The 262-foot Leona is Bilgin Yachts’s largest delivery to date. Even amid the glamour of Port Hercules, the full custom yacht will be hard to miss, thanks to a bright-scarlet hull that has earned the yacht the nickname “the Red Bullet.” The exterior is designed by Unique Yacht Design, and the interior is by H2 Yacht Design. The largest yacht to debut in Monaco this year, Leona is part of the Bilgin 263 series. It has the same lifting transom and large beach club pool as its sistership Tatiana . Another wow-factor feature includes a pair of Greek statues covered in fiber optics that give the impression of a star-studded night sky.

‘Alchemy’ | Rossinavi

monaco yacht show stand

With a design that was developed entirely over Zoom, Rossinavi’s tri-deck 216-foot Alchemy was built for an owner with a penchant for space. The result is more than 3,500 square feet of deck space, which holds large outdoor dining areas mated with dedicated bronzing and socializing areas and an on-deck Jacuzzi. The design employs Philippe Briand’s signature Vitruvius hull, while the contemporary interior was by Enrico Gobbi’s Team for Design.

‘Anjelif’ | Columbus Yachts

monaco yacht show stand

The 164-foot Anjelif is defined by its many technical innovations, including hybrid diesel-electric propulsion, an onboard sanitization system for the elimination of airborne viruses, and a touch-and-go helipad at the bow that converts into an open-air cinema. The all-aluminum, four-deck yacht delivered by Italian shipyard Columbus Yachts also boasts a gold exterior by Marco Casali of Too Design. The Italian studio used natural and sustainable materials to define the interior. Amenities include a gym on the main deck, a sauna, and treatment rooms.

‘Jewels’ | Turquoise Yachts

monaco yacht show stand

Turquoise Yachts’s 174-foot Jewels , with its sky-blue hull, will no doubt to turn heads wherever it ventures. The exterior design is the result of a first-time collaboration between the Turkish builder and Miami-based DeBasto Design. The interior is by British studio H2 Yacht Design to accommodates 12 guests. The boat, which has 720 gross tonnes of volume, boasts a large sundeck with spa pool, sunpads, bar, and socializing area.

‘Grey’ | Tankoa

monaco yacht show stand

Sporting a jet-black superstructure and light-gray hull, the aptly named Grey by Tankoa Yachts enjoys the same Paszkowski-designed profile as its sisterships Kinda and Olokun . But it’s the large glass-sided pool on the foredeck, paired with an outdoor cinema screen and integrated surround-sound speakers, that grab all the attention. A fold-down transom with extended swim platform, a beach club with side sea terraces, and a large sun deck with a second pool complete the 164-foot superyacht package.

‘X-Space’ | Sanlorenzo

monaco yacht show stand

X-Space by Sanlorenzo takes the use of onboard glass to a new level. Full-height windows, sliding-glass panes and “glass walls” in the guest cabins fill the interior with natural light. One of the yacht’s five decks is dedicated entirely to the owner, comprising multiple living areas, an office, and large master suite leading directly onto a private terrace at the bow. The exterior features include a 323-square-foot sunbathing deck and a swimming pool. Designed by Zuccon International Project, the 144-foot yacht is one of the Italian yard’s most anticipated launches to date.

‘Fancy’ | Nautor’s Swan

monaco yacht show stand

As the first hull in Nautor’s Swan’s 108 series, the 115-foot Fancy is one of a handful of sailing yachts making its world premiere at Monaco this year. Described by the shipyard as “the first in a new generation of Maxi Swans,” and sitting neatly between its Swan 98 and Swan 120 flagship, it mates a carbon hull with a sweeping and uncluttered resin-infused deck. The exterior design is by Micheletti + Partners, with naval architecture by German Frers.

‘Ace’ | Conrad

monaco yacht show stand

The 145-foot yacht Ace built by Conrad Shipyard is the largest superyacht to come out of Poland. Its Reymond Langton exterior is defined by a “rolling wave” superstructure and an 82-foot sundeck with cinema screen and recessed infinity pool. Commissioned by a Swiss owner who requested an interior with an “Italian soul,” the full-custom boat sleeps 10 guests in five suites, with accommodations for a crew of nine. It marks the first hull in the Polish shipyard’s C144S series.

‘ArtExplorer’ | Perini Navi

monaco yacht show stand

When Robb Report reported on Frédéric Jousset’s idea for a floating gallery in 2021 , the art enthusiast’s vision was still a dream. Now it’s a 154-foot reality called ArtExplorer , debuting at Monaco this year. Built by Perini Navi to a design by naval architects Axel de Beaufort and Guillaume Verdier, it is the largest aluminum sailing catamaran in the world. Following the museum boat’s premiere at Monaco, it will sail the world, hosting immersive art exhibitions curated in collaboration with the Louvre Museum in Jousset’s bid to “democratize the arts.”

‘Bad Company Support’ | Damen

monaco yacht show stand

The 175-foot Bad Company Support is the first hull in Damen Yachting’s YS53 support vessel series. Commissioned by American tech entrepreneur Anthony Hsieh, the support vessel will be the largest boat in the serial yachtsman’s 10-strong fleet of vessels used for sportfishing expeditions and marine conservation. It’s also his first new build. Sporting an attention-grabbing neon pink name on its side, the support vessel has a 5,000 nautical mile range, a 15-ton deck crane, and IMO Tier III-compliant engines.

By Steph Loseby   3 October 2022

After another edition of one of the most prestigious events in the yachting calendar, YachtCharterFleet reflects on all the highlights from this year's remarkable Monaco Yacht Show .

Bringing together a dazzling fleet of over 130 superyachts, 74 of which made their debut in Monaco , and around 600 exhibitors, the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 has been a roaring success.

Alongside a stellar line-up of superyachts, some of the biggest names in the yachting industry attended the glamorous event in Port hercules, including Lurssen , Feadship , Benetti ,  Azimut  and  Gulf Craft .

luxury yachts lined up at the Monaco Yacht Show 2022

The Monaco Yacht Show maintains its lofty position as the most prestigious yacht show that annually boasts a fleet of beautiful  luxury charter yachts  and a variety of captivating superyachts for sale. This year, industry players and prospective clients spent four days immersed in the world of yachting, witnessing the latest innovations, technologies and designs.

The show kicked off with spectacular sunshine beaming down over the remarkable fleet and the atmosphere in Monaco was buzzing with excitement as show-goers walked the time-honoured blue carpet.

As the show went on, the weather became windier but despite talks of rain, the weather held off and continued to remain dry and remarkably sunny come Friday and Saturday.

The show creates a buzz of excitement for all the latest superyacht designs, new innovations and technology but most importantly, the luxurious vessels themselves.

Standout Superyachts

With a strong turnout of vessels at this year’s edition, stealing the hearts of many showgoers was, of course, the outstanding 115m (378ft) motor yacht AHPO . As one of the most exciting new yachts at the show and a recent addition to the charter fleet, the Lurssen yacht was eye-catching, unique and extremely luxurious, showcasing her expansive beach club with hydraulic steps that lead you directly into the sea.

On the same dock, freshly delivered this year, Golden Yacht's 88m (289ft) superyacht PROJECT X definitely caused a buzz and soon became one of the most-talked about yachts at the show. YachtCharterFleet stepped onboard to discover her beautiful Massari-designed interiors, as well as her 7.5-meter by 3-meter glass-enclosed swimming pool on her aft main deck and vast beach club which proved to be outstanding.

Sparking a lot of attention was the impressive 75m (247ft) superyacht KENSHÕ , marking her debut onto the charter fleet in 2022, at this year's show, guests took a tender to view her as she was located out at anchor, just off the coast of Monaco. With her sleek profile and eye-catching reverse bow, this superyacht has many stand-out features, from her beautiful waterside beach club to her vast 6-meter glass-fronted swimming pool. Inside, there is a sense of zen-calm Asian-inspired styling designed around the Owner’s love of the ocean.

Some of the team at YachtCharterFleet were lucky enough to step onboard to enjoy a tour around yacht KENSHÕ, among many other yachts in the top tier of luxury design and craftsmanship.

New hubs for 2022

entrance to the adventure area at the Monaco Yacht Show 2022

Back at the port, there was plenty to see and the boardwalks were bustling with people. This year's show boasted a seamless new layout that allowed showgoers to witness the brand-new Adventure Area and Sustainability Hub , alongside its popular Design & Innovation Hub and dockside areas committed to the exhibition of superyachts and tenders. From nautical gadgets, all-terrain vehicles and an abundance of luxury tenders, we viewed a wide range of activities and services targeting the upcoming generation of superyacht clientele.

One of the most popular areas at this year's show was the Yacht Design and Innovation Hub, a place where the world’s most renowned yacht designers convened to showcase their latest projects. Various presentations on design and eco-responsible projects in yachting took place in a conference room upstairs which proved to be informative and eye-opening for all. This year, the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub also welcomed the historic exhibitors of the Designer Gallery along the Louis Chiron bend of Port Hercules.

Sapphire Experience

Introduced for the first time last year, the  Sapphire Experience proved to be another successful addition to the show. The experience itself is a bespoke tour program for visitors interested in renting or buying a yacht, with a concierge team dedicated to creating a bespoke program of events tailored to take advantage of all there is to experience at the show in true VIP fashion; including scheduled visits on board yachts, attendance at gala evenings or private cocktails on board various luxury vessels. We also spotted an official Sapphire tender and courtesy car service that provided seamless transport around the show.

In addition, there were also dedicated VIP entrances and lounges for convenience and relaxation throughout the show.

Standout concepts announced at the show

The stands were livelier than ever this year, with a number of top shipyards grabbing the opportunity to reveal their new concepts at the show.

Feadship reveals 85m concept SLICE

The Dutch shipyard Feadship revealed a revolutionary 85m superyacht concept at this year's Monaco Yacht Show, named SLICE. With the vessel’s initial concept coming from design Studio de Voogt, Slice is designed to “turn the inside out and the outside in”, according to the studio’s lead designer, Chris Bottoms and Head of Design, Tanno Weeda.

The yacht tackles one of the biggest owner grievances in yacht design: long hallways, dark interiors and stacked living spaces. The design incorporates a long glass strip from bow to stern which allows natural light to flow through her multiple decks with the aim to reinvent yacht corridors as enjoyable spaces in their own right.

Abeking & Rasmussen presents 86m explorer concept TIME

During the show, the German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen  teamed up with Swiss design studio Valentin Design Sur Mesure to present their 86-meter explorer concept TIME.

Described as "one-of-a-kind", explorer yacht TIME is a seven-deck explorer powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system to venture in both cold and warm water. Designed by Valentin Weigand, the yacht is defined by an inverted bow and is home to multiple features that make her stand out from the crowd. U-Boat Worx unveils 37.5m underwater superyacht Nautilus

Another memorable concept unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show was the 37.5-meter underwater superyacht model, NAUTILUS, a diesel-electric yacht that can function as both an on-water vessel as well as a submarine. Revealed by Dutch submersible specialist U-Boat Worx, NAUTILUS combines the usual trappings of superyacht life with the unique ability to dive down to 200m (650ft) depths.

on-water, submarine concept revealed

A particularly fascinating design, NAUTILUS is able to stay underwater for days at a time, with a surface cruise speed of nine knots and an underwater speed of four knots. What happens when the model is not in use? Well, it can be docked at any quay that can accommodate its 6.5-meter draft.

Fuelled by a number of exciting changes, the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 was an exhilarating success for all involved, with a number of industry insiders confirming this year's show overall felt a lot more relaxed with fewer crowds and easier access, with a new buyer focus. With over 30,000 guests and prospective buyers persuing Port Hercules over the four days, admiring the yachting industry in all of its splendor, the show remains the industry's leading premier yacht show.

The Monaco Yacht Show 2023: A Round Up of the Top Stories

By Frances Flannagan

After a truly spectacular edition of the Monaco Yacht Show this year, we take a look at some of the top news stories from the event. From new launches, to concept designs, this year’s show featured a host of exciting industry updates.

The Monaco Yacht Show 2023 undoubtedly saw a range of exciting updates for the industry; we take a look at six of the top news that was unveiled during the show. We delve into the announcement of the launch of the first Amels 80, the unveiling of two concept designs from Feadship and Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, the reveal of Benetti's 85m project and Rossinavi’s 66m diesel electric ALCHEMY, as well as taking a look at Lürssen's 97m CARINTHIA VII following her 10-month refit.

The First Amels 80 Launched

On schedule to be delivered in 2025, the first Amels 80’s new hull and superstructure were spotted outside of her build shed. Described by Sean Bianchi, Partner and Head of New Construction at Burgess, and Naval Architect, as a yacht which will ‘stand out amongst her peers and set the benchmark for future yachts’, her launch was highly exciting news announced by the shipyard on the first morning of the yacht show.

Designed by Espen Øino, Amels 80 features a holistic and modern exterior design, in keeping with the Amels DNA. She also features sustainable materials and innovative hybrid technology, a key factor of the next-generation Amels' design.

‘The Amels 80 is a design that will not age. Her modern strong lines will look as good in 10 years as the day she is delivered. She is a big ship, full of features, with an impressive interior volume. She is everything and more that you would expect from an 80-metre yacht. There is a sense of scale, and nothing is wasted,’ commented Espen Øino.

Her interiors are custom-built, penned by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, with a neutral and natural palette, allowing for the owner to add their own personal style. She can accommodate up to 14 guests, who can enjoy a 200 square metres sun deck, a waterside beach club which opens on three sides and a wellness area and spa, to name a few of the fantastic amenities on board.

Benetti’s Full-Custom Espen Øino-Designed 85m Project Announced

PROJECT LIFE, Benetti’s new full-custom 85m, is a welcome addition to the Italian yard’s megayacht fleet. Her exteriors have also been penned by Espen Øino, who has injected Benetti’s distinctive characteristics into PROJECT LIFE’s design: the capacity to invent new lifestyles, offering varied interpretations of this concept across the decks. All spaces onboard are designed with sociability in mind, for instance, the large revolving lounge that changes its focal point depending on the time of day.

Her interiors have been designed by Francois Zuretti, who has chosen a beautiful balance between the colours and the surrounding environment, with an expanded opening that allows natural light to enhance the spaces.

PROJECT LIFE is built with all the available technologies to help reduce consumption, including diesel-electric propulsion and integrated hybrid solar panels that collect solar and thermal energy to power appliances onboard.

A Look Inside Lürssen’s 97m CARINTHIA VII Following Refit

Following a 10-month refit by Lürssen at its Hamburg facilities, the results of CARINTHIA VII’s extensive refit were revealed at this year's Monaco Yacht Show, where she was presented to the charter market for the first time, represented by Fraser.

She was designed by Tim Heywood, regarded by many as one of the world’s first true mega yachts. Kept largely hidden from industry over the last 21 years, with her interior rarely seen, her introduction to the charter market has been eagerly awaited, as has the results of her refit.

Her new work includes redesigned exterior decks, new lounge and living areas and a new 12m/39’ pool and 90sqm air-conditioned gymnasium. Her interiors are sophisticated and elegant, with beautiful wooden flooring pervading the design and neutral beige and browns contrasted with cool-tone hues of blues and stunningly clean white stylings. She is a true masterpiece and an unmissable offering to the charter market.

Embracing Sustainability: Feadship Debuts Project DUNES

DUNE takes a significant step towards Feadship’s goal of Net-Zero superyachts, combining features that reduce energy demand with technology that eliminates emissions and increases efficiency. Each individual element of the design assists in reducing environmental impact, for instance, shading windows to reduce cooling requirements, however, when implemented together, they slash a superyacht’s environmental impact dramatically.

Inspired by the aesthetics of sand dunes, this vessel reflects the onboard lifestyle that today’s owners desire, with flexible, multi-purpose spaces, endless views, and a combination of sociable open-plan areas with cosy, intimate spaces. She has an asymmetrical superstructure with almost no straight lines, meaning that spaces drift into one another, furthering the notion of flow throughout the yacht, and the heavy use of glass seamlessly blends the interiors with the surroundings.

Her design, along with all Feadship concepts, is a true joint effort between Feadship, Studio de Voogt and the yard's Knowledge and Innovation department. With a wealth of expertise and experience across all collaborators, the shipyard’s concept designs are able to be of the highest possible quality.

AWARE, The Essence of Luxury, Presented by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design

Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design presented the 79.9m yacht concept AWARE at the Monaco Yacht Show, a ready-to-build, fully operational concept with a 1600 mm scale model. Her design combines proven technology with innovation and the use of the most precious and durable materials. At the forefront of this design is space optimisation, with an abundance of space on board, vast exterior decks and an unparalleled inside-outside connection,

AWARE has been described as the ‘Essence of Luxury’: a logical step in yacht design in which all space is optimised to give guests on board the best possible experience. Sander Sinot, Designer at the firm commented:

‘For the design of AWARE the focus is on maximising the space on board within the yacht’s limited structure. We designed open plan layouts for the beach club, lounges and exterior decks that offer inherent flexibility and ample space while reducing the number of decks.’

With exceptional features to optimise the outside areas, including a beach club with a three-metre high ceiling, the interiors have similarly been designed to provide ultimate functionality and a spectacular inside-out experience. She is a tri-deck design with an open plan pavilion on the bridge deck, allowing for unrestricted views of the ocean on all sides.

Rossinavi’s 66m Diesel Electric Motor Yacht ALCHEMY

Unveiled at Port Hercules was Rossinavi’s 66m M/Y ALCHEMY, a fully custom design by Vitruvius Yachts with interior and exterior styling by Enrico Gobbi. She features diesel-electric propulsion, propelled by rods to reduce the loss of energy between the engines and navigation speed.

ALCHEMY is an elegant tri-deck design with a focus on the outdoor areas and wellness aspects of the yacht. With a spacious central corridor, the forward owner’s cabin offers a clear view of the sea, creating a sense of openness in the design alongside a strong connection to the surroundings. A special emphasis has been placed on ensuring comfort on board, in particular the minimisation of vibrations, meaning that every technical and material choice has been considered to reduce noise and vibrations.

The atmosphere throughout this vessel is calm and elegant, with every single piece of furniture being bespoke. Enrico Gobbi commented:

‘Spa mood was the keyword for the interior design and exterior decor of this yacht; natural materials, soft colours, and essential shapes for the interiors. Soft indirect lights to 'wet' the simplicity of the forms, where the detail and construction quality had to emerge and characterize the space: 'detail makes the differences' this is the motto that we have followed more than ever in this project together with the owners.’

The 32nd edition of the Monaco Yacht Show was as spectacular as ever, we can only begin to imagine the wonders that the 2024 event will hold.

"The Amels 80 is a design that will not age. Her modern strong lines will look as good in 10 years as the day she is delivered." Espen Øino, Designer and Naval Architect
