With a focus on practical training and hands-on experience, this course and hand book is very comprehensive and is what is required for ICC compliancy. The ISSA Inshore Skipper handbook has been written on every subject that is required for sailing or chartering a yacht.  This also includes a section on engines and modern navigation chart plotters. After the course: Skipper power boats or Rigid Inflatable Boats:
– up to 20 nautical miles offshore  (with inboard our outboard engine)
– only in day time
– conditions up to F4 Beaufort.

ISSA Offshore Skipper Course

The International Sailing Schools Association (ISSA) Offshore Skipper Course is a worldwide recreational certificate of competency for operating yachts up to a maximum of 78ft / 24m in coastal waters up to a distance of 60 miles offshore in moderate wind and sea conditions, day and night.

ISSA courses are unique in that theory and practice are seamlessly interwoven and as a consequence students learning is vastly improved. Our Offshore Skipper course requires candidates to have mastered the collision regulations, navigation (DR, EP, Fixes, GPS, Course to Steer etc), tides and currents and have a good knowledge of the ISSA Inshore Skipper Syllabus. Students wishing to attend this course need to have 800 sea miles properly logged and hold an ISSA Inshore Skipper or RYA Day Skipper certificate. The ISSA Offshore course is the equivalent of RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or IYT Coastal Yacht Master.

The course is a 10 day course combining practical and theory in yacht seamanship and navigation for students who have completed a f oundation course ( Zero to Hero Classic ) with Sail in Asia or a 14 day course for students who have alternative accreditation , (RYA, ASA, IYT etc) or significant  time lapses, since their original Theory was learnt. We recommend that students who enroll for this course take the 14 day course , as it prepares you for the ISSA Yachtmaster Offshore, - when you have gained the necessary mileage and other pre-requisites.

The course is a 10 day/14 day course combining practical and theory in yacht seamanship and navigation.

You need 800 logged miles at sea and to hold an ISSA Inshore Skipper certificate to enroll in this course. Students must have completed the Zero to Hero Skipper  foundation course with Sail in Asia to enter the 10 day training course for Offshore Skipper!

If you have not received this Foundation training you may only apply to do the 14 day course for the ISSA Offshore Skipper Certificate.

Students may wish to continue to Yachtmaster Offshore once they have logged the 3,000 miles of seatime required.

ISSA Offshore Skipper Certificate

The ISSA Offshore Skipper Course (Sailing) candidates will be required to carry out all practical skills under sail and power. The course is examined, at course end for both practical and theoretical competence, if successful, application will be made to the requisite certification authority for an Offshore Skipper Course certificate.  Students are required to learn The IRPCS prior to course start.  We set the IRPCS exam in the morning, of Day 1.  Students that enroll on this course will be sent our highly commended ISSA Offshore Skipper Course Handbook and a list of recommended Apps, to use and to and become familiar with, well before starting the course.

The written examination includes questions on the following subjects; navigation, tides and currents, IRPCS, pilotage, weather and forecasting, anchoring and berthing, buoyage, safety, passage planning and seamanship.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south. 

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

• Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
• Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
• Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
• Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
• Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

• Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
• Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
• Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
• Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
• Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

• Novospassky Monastery
• Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
• Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
• Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
• Cathedral of Christ the Savior
• The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.

The Inshore Skipper ISSA Yacht course is a 10 day course that includes VHF Radio, Inshore Skipper 1 and Inshore Skipper 2.  We generally run this ten day course after students have done their ISSA Yacht Crew Course (4 days).  We strongly recommend that you do the Yacht Crew Course if you have learned to sail some time ago and or if you come from dinghy sailing.  Yachts and Keelboats require similar skills but the Inshore Skipper 10 day course requires that you know how to sail in all directions, that you can reef, heave to, moor a yacht, come alongside and anchor.  The 10 days is spent learning navigation, meteorology, yacht management, engines, safety and a whole gamut of extra things which ensure you are a good learner skipper at course end.

Sail in Asia believe in giving you skills, knowledge, sail training and most important the language to direct the crew in maneouvres and to keep the crew safe!  Making you autonomous is our aim! Ensuring you are confident is our objective.  Having fun on the course guarantees your enjoyment and ability to learn quickly. Learning the skills means happy sailors and well trained sailors!  The ISSA Inshore Skipper Course is designed for Yachts, Multihulls and Keelboats.  At SIA you will become proficient on Yachts, Keelboats and Multihulls. Yacht Crew – ISSA Yacht Crew Course

The ISSA Yacht Crew Course is great starter course for beginners to sailing or power boating. Our course teaches you to sail a yacht or keelboat in light to moderate boating conditions on all points of sail. The course is 90% practical and 10% theoretical. This means you leave us not being an assistant but knowing how to sail and being an active and competent crew member.  Our course is designed so you can then join an Inshore Skippers Course and gain further experience and competence.

Sail in Asia are very keen for students to gain experience in a variety of yachts and types of yachts through participation in this ISSA Yacht Crew  course.  We have keelboats, yachts, trimarans and RIBs in our fleet and with luck you will get a chance to sail all of these types of yachts by course end. This will enhance your competence and experience as a Yacht Crew.

Boat Master – ISSA Yacht Course

The ISSA Boat Master Course is for candidates that have crewed on a small boat but have a very elementary understanding of sailing or powerboat handling.  The aim of the course is to increase the candidates’ nautical knowledge to competently take on the duties of a beginner Boat Master on a small yacht or motor boat, during the day and up to 20 NM from shelter in fair weather, and moderate sea conditions. Upon completion, and after 600 NM or 1 season regular boating the students are eligible to undertake the ISSA Inshore Motor Yacht or Inshore Sailing Yacht Skipper Course.

The Zero to Hero Course is SIA’s most popular course. Why?  The answer is a thorough course, which is very attractively priced and offers a fun introduction to becoming a recreational yacht skipper.  The course is essentially 4 courses that can be learned as one option, the ‘classic course’ 14 days in duration or two other options – the dates of courses are explained on this link in detail.

ISSA Keelboat Skipper Course

The ISSA Keelboat Skipper course is aimed at students who have completed at least 100 hours in a Keelboat as crew or Navigator.  The students will therefore be capable helms and seafarers who are ready and confident to learn how to be in charge of a small crew in daylight hours in weather up to Beaufort F4 winds and wave conditions.

The skipper trainees will be capable of heaving to, luffing up, reefing, anchoring, sailing efficiently on all points of sail and managing a crew successfully in most sailing conditions. The skipper will have a good understanding of weather forecasting and crew management and safety. They will be good navigators and able to use modern GPS plotters and tablet softaware such as Navionics.

Keelboat Navigator Course

The Keelboat Navigator Course is fun!  Its about learning to navigate using modern tablet or iPad software that enables you to go further afield in a boat that is a great dayboat but isnt fitted with tons of electronics but has high quality chart plotter software to make coastal sailing easy and to ensure you have quality tidal information and weather reports.  Talk to us on Whats App if you’d like to ask any questions.

RIB Skipper 1 Course

The RiB skipper 1 Course is an introductory familiarisation course for beginners to RIBs.  The Rigid Inflatable Boat is extremely popular all over the world. Generally it’s made of two materials, Hypalon and PVC. The PVC boat lasts about 3-5 years but degrades in the sun, Hypalon RIBs last about twice as long however, but they are almost double the price!  Usually these boats are powered by 2 stroke or 4 stroke outboard engines. The 4 stroke is the much cleaner (environmentally speaking) ICE engine and the more reliable. RIBS come in many sizes from small 2.4 dinghies to 15m RIBs that are used by commercial concerns to facilitate offshore oil and gas operations as well as coastguard and life saving / safety roles.  Consequently there is a huge demand for training for these vessels.

The RIB Skipper 1 is a one day course aimed at introducing the boat to a beginner. The safe operation of this vessel cannot be under stated. This course aims to be a familiarisation and introduction to safe operating practices. The following topics are covered by this course:
