Look Inside Seafair; Jay Leno’s Newport, RI Ocean Drive Estate

' src=

Former “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno and his wife Mavis have bought Seafair, the iconic Ocean Drive Estate for $13.5 million. The Leno’s purchased Seafair from Rick Bready, the former CEO of Nortek.

Since 1936 Seafair has reigned over its gated oceanfront peninsula. Built to compliment the curve of the coast, the crescent shaped residence boasts expansive ocean views from every living space. Of sturdy rubble-stone construction with limestone quoins and a slate roof, Seafair has embraced every aspect of its dramatic oceanfront site for over seventy years.

Private Yacht Charter Updates & Safety Information

We are excited to get back to cruising and helping you plan an unforgettable private event on the water in Miami! As we resume rentals for all luxury vessels, please know that the health and well-being of our guests and crew members is our number one priority. We are closely monitoring the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as our local health departments and authorities on the best practices while operating. Our ample yachts feature multiple decks with indoor and outdoor spaces. We will continue to assess, refine, and update our standards to keep you safe as new information is available.

COVID-19 Safety Measures

Social distancing.

  • Per current guidelines, our 60” round tables will be set six feet apart for six guests, as opposed to our previous ten, which will offer ample room and additional space between guests.
  • Our flow-through dining arrangement will allow us to control the number of guests in the dining area at any one time, as well as the flow to stations, which will limit lines and guest contact.

Employee Requirements

  • All employees are required to do a self-check prior to the start of their shift. All staff uniforms will adhere to CDC guidelines. This will include masks constantly and gloves while handling food that will be disinfected/changed for every event.

Cleaning & Sanitation

  • We will be providing hand sanitizing stations throughout the vessel, at boarding on the dock, on every deck, as well as near food and beverage areas.
  • We will have a specialized team thoroughly clean and disinfect key surfaces and areas before and after each event, with two hours specifically designated to ensure that this task is prioritized.
  • To maintain cleanliness throughout the event, cleaning specialists will be tasked with ongoing cleaning and disinfecting of high-touch and common areas, which include but are not limited to handrails, backs of chairs, doorknobs, bars, counters, high tops, low cocktail tables, coffee tables, bathroom sinks, toilet handles, etc. These tasks will be completed per the CDC and Miami-Dade County guidelines.
  • Our bathrooms feature ample individual stalls. These areas will fall into our 30-minute cleaning guidelines and will be maintained and serviced by our cleaning specialists. Bathrooms are equipped with disinfectant soap, hand sanitizers, and disposable hand towels.

Serving Procedures

  • Glassware, flatware, and tableware will be washed, disinfected, and steam cleaned before and throughout the event. Rolled up flatware and water glasses will be provided for each guest and presented individually at each place setting.
  • Welcome drinks are freshly poured upon boarding in sanitized glassware. To curb the need for congregating at the bar or making long lines, our staff will be providing cocktail service to all guests, as well as handing out welcome drinks.
  • All food and drinks will be handled, presented, and served to guests to minimize cross-contamination. Butler-passed hors d’oeuvres will no longer be passed. Instead they will be arranged as a station. All platters and food stations will be staffed with an attendant behind plexiglass who will be responsible for personally serving each guest.
  • Our new and improved buffet techniques will feature plexiglass to protect the food while guests are served by a gloved attendant. Tables will be called one at a time to prevent crowding. Our existing procedures will ensure that our buffet is staffed to serve guests individually and erase the need for self-service. This measure will prevent serving utensils from coming into contact with any guests.
  • Our bread, salad, coffee, and dessert will be served tableside, eliminating the need for self-service. Salt, pepper, and condiments will be individually packaged for each guest.
  • If additional steps are required, we are happy to provide them as requested.

The luxury boats owned by some of the wealthiest people in tech, from a yacht so big it has its own support boat to superyachts with swimming pools and basketball courts

  • Many billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson enjoy spending their time on luxurious yachts.
  • The boats are decked out with amenities that many Americans can only dream of.
  • Here are some of the billionaires in tech who own private yachts.

Insider Today

A regular Jane celebrating a personal renaissance after a long-term relationship might commemorate the new era with an ankle tattoo of a spiritual saying. When you're a billionaire, you could do it instead with a $500 million megayacht .

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos made waves in May riding around the roughly 127-meter "Koru," a Māori term that may signify a fresh start, with his reported fiancée Lauren Sanchez. (In 2019, Bezos finalized his divorce from MacKenzie Scott, whom he was married to for 25 years).

Beyond the private planes occupying the hangars of billionaires, yachts have come to symbolize the highly private sites of leisure and networking reserved for the ultra-wealthy .

Tech billionaires like Bezos, Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have all purchased their own mini vacation hubs at sea, decking their boats with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.

For those wishing to experience life aboard these multi-million-dollar yachts, some are available to rent out for a few nights or weeks at a time. Late Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen's yacht can be booked for $2.2 million per week or more, according Bloomberg .

Chartering yachts owned by billionaires like Alphabet cofounder Sergey Brin has previously cost customers anywhere from $773,000 a week to $1.2 million .

It remains to be seen how these vessels will fare against the apparent Orca uprising.

Take a look at some of the yachts that have been owned by tech billionaires.

A mystery buyer bought a 414-foot superyacht that was once owned by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen for $278 million. Allen had the boat, which was named "Octopus," built in 2003 for $200 million. Since the tech billionaire's death in 2018, the boat had been listed for as much as $325 million.

The wealthy can book the yacht for a weekly rate of $2.2 million or more, through the luxury company Camper & Nicholsons, Bloomberg reported last year.

Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the roughly 127-meter "Koru," sparked attention in May for its artistic decor. A sculpture of a woman on the boat appeared to observers to be the likeness of Bezos' reported fiancée Sanchez, who was also seen that month on the yacht sporting a large ring.

Even before its completion, "Koru" drew the ire of Dutch people vowing to hurl eggs at the boat if it would require a historic bridge in Rotterdam to be taken apart to let it through. An egg crisis was averted however, as the company making the ship found a less-irksome alternative.

Bezos has long been interested in yachts. In 2019, he was spotted aboard entertainment mogul David Geffen's superyacht.

Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison owns a 288-foot yacht named Musashi that he acquired in 2013. The yacht has several amenities, including an elevator, swimming pool, movie theater, and both an indoor and outdoor gym.

Ellison has owned several superyachts over the years, including the Katana, the Ronin, and the Rising Sun.

The Oracle cofounder also has a knack for competitive yacht racing, and helped to found and back a racing team, called Oracle Team USA, in 2000. The team has found success and won several prestigious titles over the years.

Ellison previously owned a bigger, 454-foot yacht called Rising Sun, which was designed specifically for the CEO in 2005. That yacht reportedly has 82 rooms, a movie theater, a wine cellar, and a basketball court. However, Ellison sold off the Rising Sun to Geffen for a reported $300 million.

Ellison's boat, Musashi, is a sister ship to the yacht of another billionaire, former Sears CEO Eddie Lampert. However, the yacht, named Fountainhead, is often mistaken for belonging to billionaire investor Mark Cuban. "The guy who owns the boat tells everyone that it's mine," Cuban told Page Six in 2016. "It's so crazy ... I don't even own a boat."

Ellison's yacht reportedly influenced the decision of late Apple CEO Steve Jobs to get a boat himself. However, Jobs never set foot on the boat — the yacht was commissioned in 2008, but wasn't completed until 2012, a year after his death.

When Jobs died in 2011, his yacht — along with his $14.1 billion fortune — was inherited by his wife, Laurene Powell Jobs, founder and president of a social-impact nonprofit called the Emerson Collective. The 256-foot yacht is named Venus, and is worth $130 million.

Google's billionaire cofounders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, are known to splurge. An Insider feature in December documented some of the trappings of their luxury, including planes and yachts.

Page owned a yacht named Senses, a $45 million, 194-foot boat that he bought in 2011 from a New Zealand businessman. He's since sold the yacht, Insider reported in 2021, a vessel that had a private beach club with a Jacuzzi and sun beds, both indoor and outdoor dining areas, and a helicopter pad. It's unclear what other sea vessels he owns, though Insider has previously reported he might have another yacht.

Brin meanwhile owns a number of yachts and vessels including the 73-meter Dragonfly, and the 40-meter Butterfly, Insider reported in January.

Dragonfly, the $80 million boat that has a movie-theater, shares a name with Google's once-secret project to launch a censored search engine in China. Google said in 2019 it had officially terminated the project.

The former Google CEO picked up the Alfa Nero yacht for nearly $68 million in an auction in June, according to a Bloomberg report. The yacht had apparently been left amid Russia's war in Ukraine, according to the report.

For Skype cofounder Niklas Zennstrom, his interest in yachts skews toward racing and competitive sailing. Zennstrom has gone through a succession of boats all named Ran.

The Ran VII yacht is among the most advanced of Zennstrom's boats. The racing yacht uses electrical power, which Zennstrom has said makes it "lighter, less drag, quieter, and most importantly it is environmentally friendly."

who owns seafair yacht

The 40-foot yacht has been meant to compete in regattas through the racing team owned by Zennstrom and his wife, Catherine. The Ran racing team launched in 2008, and has won some prestigious regattas.

Barry Diller, chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns a $70 million yacht with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.

The sailing yacht, named Eos, is 350 feet long with six bedrooms. The power couple has hosted many celebrities over the years — a few that have been spotted aboard Eos include model Karlie Kloss, actor Bradley Cooper, journalist Anderson Cooper, and singer Harry Styles.

For Jim Clark, the cofounder of Netscape, one yacht hasn't been enough. Clark has owned boats for more than 30 years, and in 2012, he put up two of his sailing yachts for sale.

who owns seafair yacht

Clark listed the boats for a combined $113 million: the 136-foot Hanuman for $18 million, and the 295-foot Athena for $95 million. However, Clark has yet to offload Athena. Clark also previously owned a 155-foot yacht named Hyperion, and currently also owns a sloop called Hanuman.

Charles Simonyi worked at Microsoft until 2002, and oversaw the creation of Microsoft Office software. A few years before he left, Simonyi decided to purchase a yacht. He told the designer that wanted his yacht to be "home away from [his] home in Seattle."

The product of that conversation in 1999 is Simonyi's yacht named Skat, meaning "treasure" in Danish. The yacht measures 233 feet long, and is unique with its nontraditional design and gray color. Skat features a matching gray helicopter, a gym, and motorcycles.

Opulent British billionaire Richard Branson owned a yacht until he sold it in September 2018. The 105-foot catamaran sold for $3 million, significantly lower than the $9.6 million price Branson listed the boat for in 2014.

who owns seafair yacht

Branson, the founder of Virgin Group, bought the boat in 2009. He named it Necker Belle, a nod to his private Caribbean island, Necker Island.

A Closer Look at the $268 Million Superyacht Rocinante (Formerly "TV")

Lurssen , the internationally acclaimed superyacht builder, created a five-deck yacht named TV in 2008, and she's still a classic beauty in the yachting world today. To understand the sleek, aerodynamic beauty that is the TV, you have to take a look at this extraordinary company. After all, most luxury builders aren't invested in their commitment to sustainable business practices. Lurssen is truly an industry leader in more ways than one.

Lurssen History

"My firm shall be known as a leader in both quality and performance." Founded by Friedrich Lürssen in 1875, Lurssen Yachts has a simple mission to create a quality product. The building traditions have been handed down through the generations to help preserve and uplift the business. In fact, all the shareholders are Lurssen family members. They hold the company closely so that there are no outside risks, takeovers, or conflicts of interest. This tactic helps them stay on track to make some of the best ships and yachts in the world. So far, it has allowed them to build over 13,000 boats and ships, many of which are in service for decades. Esteemed among the world yacht makers for their investments in state of the art technology, they also hold the current record for most top 20 mega yachts. Lurssen built eleven of the twenty largest yachts in the last twenty years, and they're not stopping anytime soon. To that end, they offer lifetime support for all their vessels.

The yacht formerly known as "TV," has worn other titles over the years. She changes her name as often as she gets new owners, so like a sleek Hollywood starlet using a stage name, you may know her in another guise. Before she was called TV, she was known as the Madsummer. We can only imagine that she lived up to the name admirably. While she surely enjoyed her time as the Madsummer and the TV, this sip's current owner calls her bay a different name. She sails as the Rocinante now. The change is a recent one. The TV went up for sale in 2017, just a couple of years after her 2015 overhaul. She was sold by Robert Shepherd at Edmiston & Company and renamed. The name is a very apropos reimagining of her original guise. For those who don't know, Rocinante was the name given to another famous transport, namely Don Quixote's horse. Brave, brazen, and a little bit mad seems to be a persona the ship keeps regardless of who owns her at the time.

Achievements

Among her many achievements, the TV was featured in the prestigious 2010 edition of The Superyachts book. Her fame that year may be due to the fact that she entered in the 2009 World Superyacht Awards. She competed for Best Displacement Motor Yacht of 1,300GT to 2,999GT (approximately 60m – 84m). More importantly, she was a finalist. Her designer Espen Oeino is known for his incredible work in the ocean-faring world and beyond. With over sixty yachts to his name, the TV is a member of an incredibly prestigious family. You can see the resemblance in the lines around their decks.

Many Amenities

The Rocinante has more features than she's had names and owners. If you begin at the top, her owners' suite has panoramic windows with 360 views of the ocean. Additionally, the massive luxury abode is equipped with a private deck which overlooks several of her other decks. Lower decks have a plethora of pleasing amenities. She can handle twelve or more guests in ten luxurious bedrooms and houses a crew of over thirty. Like other top-tier luxury mega yachts, that's two or more staff per visitor. The private rooms naturally all come equipped with televisions, and there's ship-wide Wifi as well. We can't imagine why you'd want to stay in, but if you did, it would be as luxuriant as sitting out on the deck as she cruises along at twelve knots.

On deck, she has a hot tub for relaxing and unwinding any tense muscles, and two small pools for swimming in fresh water if you prefer. Our favorite feature is the outstanding barbecue arrangement and outdoor dining area. Speaking of the deck, she's covered in gorgeous glowing teak everywhere you look. With plenty of places to relax and catch some sun, plus a padded bed/couch area the size of a room to lounge in on one deck, you'll almost have to get a tan just by visiting.

You can wander downstairs and, with the owner's permission, of course, take out one of the jetskis. The back deck allows ample opportunity for those who wish to scuba or swim in the open ocean. It's not hard to imagine curious dolphins swimming right up to say hello as you take in the view near the water line.

Comfortable Cruising at its Finest

Indoors you'll find cozy niches and large lounges, dining amenities for a family or a whole party. The creme, gold, and teak color scheme is carried throughout the entire ship, and soft lines bring a sense of calm and relaxation of their own. If that's not enough to put you at your ease, try the small spa for a massage, or hit the shipboard gym to burn off some nervous energy in style. Also for the owner and guests comfort the TV aka Rocinante comes equipped with an ultra-modern stabilization system which reduces roll motion. The stability means less chance of motion sickness or sea sickness for those aboard. When it comes to deluxe features, having all the benefits of a yacht without the downside is about as good as it gets.

Final Thoughts

We're not n the market for a superyacht (yet), but if we were, Lurssen would be the first to hear about it. Beautiful yachts like the TV are only part of their appeal. Any business that works so hard to do right and use ethically sourced materials to help promote sustainable and responsible resource use is worthy of a second look. They've certainly shot to the top of our list. When you're ready to purchase your next superyacht, we hope you'll look at this forward-thinking company too, but for now, we'll lay on the beach and daydream about adding the TV to our private collection.

50-metre-motor-yacht-trending

On board with Paul and Maureen Petracca, owners of 49m superyacht Trending

After racking up 40 charters, the Petraccas decided it was time to buy their own boat – and all that experience informed one far-reaching refit, as they tell Tristan Rutherford...

The moment that Maureen and Paul Petracca knew they wanted to own their yacht came after 40 successful charters.“On our last trip the captain was the worst we’ve ever had,” says Maureen. “He even stranded our son and his fiancée on a tiny island off St Barths . Genuinely no one knew where they were.” After four hours playing Robinson Crusoe, the young couple were lucky to hitch a ride with a passing boat back to the Petracca family’s charter. “For the amount you pay for a week aboard, you want the charter experience to be perfect,” continues Maureen. “At that point Paul and I looked at each other and said: ‘We need to take control of this ourselves. Let’s buy a yacht of our own!’”

The result is Trending . “After 20 years of chartering several times per year we knew what we wanted,” says Paul. The twin-angled brief called for a shallow draught for cruising the Bahamas, the Petraccas’ nearest fly-in, kick-back island chain, plus a maximum length of 50 metres “because above that some ports need a pilot, and there are other regulations and entanglements”, says Paul. The equation delivered seven or eight possible yachts, leaving two 50 metre Westport 164s in contention. One became the perfect blank canvas for an ambitious overhaul into an understated and luxurious six-cabin superyacht that cruises across the Atlantic at up to 20 knots.

She’s certainly a step up from Maureen and Paul’s first foray on to the water. “We both grew up as lake people,” explains Paul. “Each of us had a summer house, and mine came with an aluminium boat with a nine horsepower engine.” As powerboats were a rarity, the family runabout was used to the full for fishing and racing. Maureen’s family was based on a lake on Cape Cod. “Our first boat was fibreglass with a six horsepower engine out back, and we graduated to a 5.8 metre on which we learned to waterski.” When married, the couple jointly purchased a 9.7 metre Edgewater. “We still use it to hop over to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard,” says Maureen.

From their Massachusetts home, the Petraccas’ career and vacation horizons broadened. Paul is now the chief investment officer at Pemco Management, which focuses on public equity investments, primarily in the technology and healthcare spaces. Maureen oversaw a far more important project: the annual yachting trips for their three children and family friends. After dozens of charters from the likes of Camper & Nicholsons , Fraser and IYC , the Petraccas knew precisely what they wanted from a week in the Mediterranean or Caribbean. “By the end of our charter life we started bringing our own specialised fishing gear,” she explains. “We sometimes brought our own divemaster. Once we even shipped in our own tender.”

Undersea exploration would play a pivotal part in the Petraccas’ charter adventures from 1996 to 2015. The entire family are PADI certified divers. The 700 islands of the Bahamas particularly appealed, not least the Exumas. Croatia also delighted the Petraccas a few years back with its countless wreck dives. It was Dubrovnik that entranced Maureen. “We toured the medieval walls and UNESCO-protected Old Town, which were beautiful.”

Before the Petraccas’ own Westport could set sail for Europe there was work to be done. “Our purchase was a 1980s throwback,” recalls Maureen. It contained thick rugs, and heavily upholstered furniture littered the voluminous interior. The vessel, formerly called Vango , had been owned by a retired couple who used it infrequently, “which was great because she had very low engine hours”, says Paul. It was Maureen who oversaw the interiors as part of an all-encompassing refit from 2015 to 2016.

Light marble and white stone were laid across the main saloon. Oversized windows pour light on to the chrome, taupes, mirrors and creams. Rainforest showers and double sinks grace every en suite. A hint of individuality is provided by Maureen’s underwater photography portraits from as far afield as St Barths, Barbuda and Saba, the Dutch Caribbean island that contains the Netherlands’ highest peak. “Our experience from 40 charters has been distilled into this space,” says Maureen. Most importantly, the finish isn’t regally stiff but royally comfortable, with sky blue fabrics and enough crystal glasses to decant the entire Napa Valley.

Stepping aboard, it’s clear why they purchased a Westport over any other yacht. “Quite simply, we knew we could modify the hell out of it,” says Paul. A bridge extension has been constructed behind the tri-deck’s upper saloon, creating an additional raised dining area for all 12 guests. “The view is great, but the privacy is priceless,” says Maureen. “As Trending is sometimes tied up in a Mediterranean port you get people promenading past.” And who wants them watching you having dinner? An illuminated bar sparkles in the night sky, as a sound system rocks the extra club area installed on the Portuguese deck just in front of the bridge. “We’re a little afraid of the sun these days so sails shade the top by day.” A therapeutic Michael Phelps Signature Swim Spa with shaded lounging areas was added too. “I prefer pools that can accommodate many guests,” says Maureen. Hers can welcome eight.

Westport, based in Washington State, comes with five decades of North Pacific experience. “The company is up to hull No 15 or 16 for our largest model, the W164,” says Paul. “So most issues would have been resolved, which allowed us to incorporate those improvements in our yacht. We also knew we could get any spare parts as we’re based in the US.” Ultimately, the refit cost $5 million. “One name we thought of for the yacht was Legacy Killer, as it was just so appropriate,” he laughs. “This yacht keeps me coming to work and earning my keep.”

The electronics on board were a focus of Paul’s. “As guests aboard our own yacht we want to share videos from our iPhones directly on to all the screens,” he says. “I believe charter clients want to do the same.” His flotilla of toys, meanwhile, is truly enviable. There are Seabobs for speed snorkelling and glass-bottomed kayaks for slow drifts across virgin reefs. “When we bought the two RIBs I asked: what’s the biggest our crane can lift?” The result is four metre and 5.5 metre Novurania tenders, the latter with 120hp out back for fishing, diving, island picnics or secret beach retreats. Paul’s desire for perfection is ever present. “I’m a maintenance freak who wants every toy to work all of the time, for our sake and everyone else’s.”

The flotilla flagship is a 11.3 metre Boston Whaler. “Our son Christopher is a qualified captain in his own right so it’s his chance to drive,” says Maureen. The Petracca family uses it for sunset cruises, but only after speed records have been smashed via its triple 350hp outboards. The boat has “all the creature comforts” including electric shades, a barbecue, night vision equipment and an air- conditioned front cabin. Guests are welcome to invite Trending’s PADI instructor along for the ride. The Petraccas frequently use the boat for their latest craze – kitesurfing – which is best practised on the mirror-calm, searing-breeze waters off Barbados and the Grenadines.

Greater adventures await in the next two or three years. Maps have been consulted for a grand voyage through the Panama Canal. The route would allow for whale watching off Baja and leopard shark dives off LA’s Channel Islands, before passing Westport’s HQ near Seattle. Prince of Wales Island would then mark the gateway to an Alaskan summer. Will charter guests be able to book part of their route? “Sorry to disappoint, but it’ll be only us the whole time,” says Paul. “That is if I can keep myself away from the office for that long.” After 40 charters the Petraccas are now master of their own yacht.
