Sanlorenzo’s Biggest-Ever Superyacht … By Far: Attila The Fun

More than three times the volume of Sanlorenzo’s previous flagship, the first 64Steel is more notable for its stunning beach club and pool.

Some yacht layouts are so predictable that you could practically walk through the boat with your eyes closed and still find your way around. But in recent years, more designers and builders are breaking the mould and creating something else entirely, which is what Sanlorenzo has done with its new flagship, the 64Steel  Attila.

A superyacht with a unique layout customised to suit her owner’s lifestyle, the 64.25m  Attila  is the largest yacht to emerge from the Italian builder, by some way. It’s 12m longer than the 52Steel  Seven Sins  and at 1,600GT, more than three times the volume of the builder’s 499GT former flagship.

The  Attila  owner’s previous boat was the Sanlorenzo 46Steel,  Achilles . The first 64Steel represents not just a step up in size for this owner and her builder but also in scope. She brims with creative ideas and big- ticket amenities that you would expect to find on a much larger yacht.

With bold exterior lines by Officina Italia Design and a striking silver hull,  Attila  is certainly a head-turner. Interior design and decor are by Francesco Paszkowski and Margherita Casprini, who worked in concert with the owner and Sanlorenzo to create the calm interior motif and unusual layout.

SUMMER LIVING

The moment you enter  Attila , you can tell she is different. The owner’s idea was to get rid of a formal main saloon and create a way for everyone to be connected as they enjoyed the yacht throughout day. “Who is using a big saloon in a boat?” says the owner of  Attila . “They are not. In the end, in the summer, you are outside.”

Stepping into the main-deck living area, you have to take a moment to get your bearings. Instead of a foyer or saloon, you enter directly into the dining room, which is anything but a formal affair.

The first thing you see upon entering this room is dual staircases to port and starboard, leading to the expansive beach club below, which is bathed in light from the glass-bottom pool above on the main deck aft. Sliding glass doors open on both sides of the dining room to let in fresh air.

“This is unique,” says Antonio Santella, Sanlorenzo’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We have this connection between the pool, al fresco veranda, dining area and beach club. People are not divided into different groups. They are all together.”

ARGENTINE GRILL

A 10-seat wood dining table, backed by a bar and a huge grill, consumes the room. Placing a barbecue inside the yacht’s living spaces – essentially inviting open fire onto the main deck – was no easy task. It challenged the yard to find creative solutions, which emerged with the use of A60 fireproof stainless steel as well as installing a special system to remove smoke.

This barbecue is just one of the elements that speaks to her owner’s Argentine origins and love for grilling meat. Another is the copious, dedicated meat storage found on board – during my visit I was shown 450kg of meat stored on the tank deck.

With her enormous volume and 13.1m beam – wider than most yachts of her length –  Attila  has the room to pack in all of her owner’s special requests as well as amenities you’d usually find on larger yachts.

“All the design ideas you see in this boat are typical of boats 90m and over, and we are only 64m,” Santella says. “This was the goal: to give something more and be similar to a 90m or 100m boat.”

This includes items such as a touch-and-go helipad, storage for two big 10m-plus tenders, and a 78sqm beach club with a gym, sauna and massage room.

Another big-boat goal, according to Santella, was to have all the guest living spaces on the main deck. There are four double cabins and one master-worthy VIP on the main deck that any guest would feel lucky to have. To achieve this layout, the only ‘saloon’ on the main deck is a cosy cinema lounge.

A larger, but still cosy, saloon is found on the upper or bridge deck, adjacent to another dining area for 14. This deck also houses the Captain’s cabin and a cabin for a nanny or staff member, while the bridge is forward, enjoying excellent sight lines.

OWNER’S HAVEN

The deck above is a space completely dedicated to the owner, as per his exacting brief. “The main characteristic of this boat is the fact that the owner wanted to have a full deck completely private for him,” Santella says.

This palatial suite includes a large en-suite bathroom, walk-in wardrobe and a forward-facing bedroom opening out onto a private terrace with a pool.

Aft on this deck is a private living room opening onto an outdoor lounge area. It’s the ideal personal space for an owner who says he plans to use the boat “as much as possible.”

Between  Attila ’s delivery and world premiere at last year’s Monaco Yacht Show, he had already used his new boat for three months.

The owner loves to be outside, but if he happens to be stuck inside more than he likes, the calming yet cool interior should be a pleasure in which to spend time. The designers wanted to create something that was modern yet timeless, choosing a soothing palette of grey, white and brown and a plethora of natural materials.

The interior is replete in marble, backlit onyx, glass, stainless steel and teak, the owner’s favourite wood. Furnishings come from Italian brands like Flexform sofas and Catellani & Smith light fixtures, while Summit has provided suitably chic exterior furniture.

Sanlorenzo admits that building this owner-specific, technically intrinsic yacht was a challenge, but it’s one they relished.

“Every boat for us is a challenge,” says Santella. “We don’t build a boat without innovation. On every Sanlorenzo boat, there is something different from all the others.”

For those who want to push the envelope even further, the technical platform of the 64Steel is designed to extended up 70m. Perhaps this owner, after he’s had plenty of time to chill and grill on his new yacht, will be ready to go even bigger yet.

Attila  proves that the sky’s the limit for what an innovative yard, designers and owner can create when they combine forces.

The newest and biggest addition to Sanlorenzo’s luxury explorer yacht range, the 47m 500EXP model is an evolution of the yard’s slightly smaller 460EXP design that has taken everything good about the 460EXP and added even more desirable features to it. One of the biggest differences between the two models is the extension of stern to create an even bigger space for storing toys and tenders and doubling as a helipad – perfect for guest access in remote anchorages.

Key Features

Designed to travel the world, the 500EXP is a hardy design with expedition qualities, all in one stylish package with the signature Sanlorenzo look. Ideally suited to extended inventories and remote cruising grounds, she has a displacement hull with steel hull and aluminium superstructure, extensive on-board storage, and a range of more than 4500nm cruising at 11 knots. Powered by twin CAT C32 ACERT engines she can reach maximum speeds of 15.5 knots.

Boasting generous volumes across all decks, the 500EXP is spacious and welcoming with a contemporary and stylish interior and large windows that let in natural light and showcase spectacular scenery and oceanscapes. The main deck is the heart of the yacht and features a guest lobby, with a striking stylised staircase that connects the main decks, and a large main saloon with a large formal dining table and lounge seating. The main saloon leads seamlessly out to the aft cockpit which connects with the extensive quarter deck.

On board accommodation is for 12, with all cabins generously appointed with en suite. Forward of the main deck is the impressive owner’s suite which includes lounge seating, his and hers bathrooms and a separate private office. Two VIP cabins and two twins are located on the lower deck together with the galley and crew quarters.

The upper deck features the captain’s cabin, wheelhouse, day head and a second guest saloon, leading out to the upper aft deck with seating and sun loungers. Moving up a level the sundeck is perfect for relaxing and enjoying stunning surroundings, with a large al fresco dining set up, sun loungers, seating and coffee table and a beautiful Jacuzzi. The lower deck provides yet more exterior space with the lazarette, swim platform and connecting tender garage that has the capacity to store a tender up to 7 metres long. The impressive beach club area has been further developed with additional openings that provide even more of a connection with the sea.

47m Sanlorenzo explorer yacht Arrow for sale

The 47-metre Sanlorenzo explorer yacht Arrow has been listed for sale with Brad Curtin of HMY Yacht Sales.

Built in 2022 by Sanlorenzo in Italy, Arrow is a steel-hulled 500 EXP model designed by Francesco Paszkowski Design.

She accommodates 10 guests in five cabins and has quarters for a crew of seven. The interior is contemporary, but nautical, with large windows and expanses of wood soles and panelling. Arrow is equipped with state-of-the-art navigation and communication systems.

Sporting a large helipad on the aft deck, Arrow offers a versatile platform for intrepid explorers to roam the globe aboard. An explorer submarine is not part of the inventory but, like the helicopter, can be purchased separately. A large Jacuzzi provides a welcome spot to unwind after a hard day's research activity, as well as a beach club.

Twin 1,470hp Caterpillar diesels provide the explorer yacht for sale with a top speed of 15 knots and cruising speed of 13 knots.

Sanlorenzo’s Asymmetric SL106A Reviewed

Any time a company deviates from “the norm,” eyebrows raise. This is especially true in yachting, which remains a fairly conservative industry in terms of design. Traditional looks still sell, so many builders play it pretty safe, as is evident at any boat show where attendees are incredulous upon seeing a radically different yacht.

Massimo Perotti, the chairman and CEO of Sanlorenzo , knows the feeling. When the shipyard announced the addition of Asymmetric models to its SL series, the news was met with “a bit of skepticism,” he says. These Asymmetric models push usable interior space out to the full beam on one side—and only one side, where there’s no traditional side deck.

Captains and crew accustomed to having two side decks to handle lines and get around the yacht were worried. Customers could have been too, but funny enough, the customers liked it. Then, the captains and crew came around.

“The market has been receiving the Asymmetric idea very well,” Perotti says, adding that acceptance came partly because the side deck isn’t actually removed; it’s just moved. When owners see and feel the difference in the interior, and how much it enhances their connection to the cruising environment, they’re sold.

The idea behind the Asymmetric line dates back several years. Sanlorenzo was wrestling with how to provide owners with more usable interior space. An initial idea was a widebody design, in which the main-deck interior spans the yacht’s full beam. Sanlorenzo quickly decided that wasn’t practical for smaller to midsize superyachts. So, Perotti sought the input of designer Chris Bangle, with whom Sanlorenzo has been working since 2015. Bangle is known for shaking up the designs of Fiat and BMW. He came up with the notion of a widebody to one side to benefit owners along with a full side deck opposite, as well as an over-the-widebody passage from the flybridge to the bow to benefit the crew.

Sanlorenzo then tapped Zuccon International Project and its own design department to make the concept float. The first Asymmetric model, the SL102A, debuted in May 2018, with about a dozen contracts coming in less than a year. After that, customers began asking for a slightly longer aft deck and swim platform, which resulted in the creation of the SL106A.

If you’re still trying to wrap your brain around the asymmetry, rest assured that the SL106A doesn’t look lopsided. In fact, unless you know to look for the difference, you may not even notice it at first.

There is still a side deck to starboard, and the twin stairways leading from the swim platform to the main deck aft are what you’re used to seeing. The same is true when you view the vessel bow-on or in aerial photos. Handrail-lined side decks—truly dedicated passageways outboard of the leisure areas—on the flybridge lend aesthetic balance.

For the remaining skeptics, consider that most flybridge yachts don’t provide a way for the crew to reach the foredeck from up top. The SL106A has a few stairs on the widebody side. Crew also can access the flybridge via an alfresco floating stairway aft and to port on the main deck, or by way of steps from the raised pilothouse (a configuration that’s hidden until you step aboard).

As for the extra interior space, the one-sided widebody adds nearly 108 square feet to the main deck. Much of it is used in the open-plan salon and dining area, where most owners and guests spend their time when they’re not swimming or otherwise enjoying the great outdoors. Additionally, a nearly sole-to-ceiling window is on the widebody side. Guests can practically stand right up against it, lending the sensation of hovering directly above the water. Sliding glass doors and a deploying balcony opposite, along with the 23-foot beam, add to the roomy feel.

The main-deck master stateroom also feels airy because of a rectangular port forward, directly over the bed. (Where so many builders position the en suite head; Sanlorenzo situates it along the portside entry.) This stateroom has a door to the starboard-side deck. Push a button, and there’s access to the foredeck settee with a table for a private breakfast or snack. A few steps up on the port side are a sun pad and the stairs to the flybridge.

In challenging conventional notions of how a yacht has to look and function, Sanlorenzo actually includes new ways to get around. And the SL106A is still a 10-guest, 28-knot yacht. That is about as traditional as they come. 

Fueling the Future

Sanlorenzo is exploring alternatives to traditional diesel fuel. In partnership with Siemens Energy, it’s developing a superyacht with methanol fuel-cell systems to generate electricity—a proven technology that has never been used in yachting. Delivery of the 164-footer is expected in 2024.

Recognizing that its customers regularly attend major art fairs, Sanlorenzo has a global partnership agreement for the Art Basel events in Hong Kong, Switzerland and Miami through 2023. The shipyard created Sanlorenzo Arts to better connect its brand to the art world, collaborating with artists for special exhibitions.

Sanlorenzo created its High-End Services division in 2020 to enhance customer relationships. Services include leasing and financing, crew training at the Sanlorenzo Academy, as well as maintenance and refit through Sanlorenzo Timeless. The builder is augmenting the division this year to increase client loyalty and attract new buyers.

The interiors, designed by Piero Lissoni, embrace this lability of boundaries between inside and outside in a fluid and iridescent way, taking the concept of contamination between environments and raison d’être to its maximum expression.

La La Land flaunts an unconventional six-deck layout and a voluminous 499 GT, embodying unprecedented character and features. The ultimate goal is the expression, in every feature, of the perfect balance between the courage to make innovative choices and the preservation of delicate, classic lines, an embodiment of Sanlorenzo’s timeless class.

Access aboard La La Land is through the Main Deck, where a sea-facing swimming pool frames an open-air lounge, extendable through folding balconies. A characteristic feature of the model is the addition of an outdoor cockpit dedicated to a lounge area, protected and sheltered both at the top and at the sides, guaranteeing maximum privacy for the owner and his guests. The continuity between outdoors and indoors is emphasized by the use of sliding doors that disappear into the structure to create a single open space.

Thanks to the asymmetrical aspect of the deck, the environment welcomes an initial living area with generous volumes. Continuing on the Main Deck, the real star of this yacht is the elegant helicoidal staircase designed by Piero Lissoni, a work of art that embellishes the interiors by linking the four decks into a single central body.

The bow space is dedicated to a multifunctional area with two different configurations, designed to meet the desires of a clientele that loves relax and conviviality: a dynamic environment that can be configured as a cinema or dining area capable of accommodating up to 12 guests around a convertible dining table.

The great flexibility of this area crowns the customization possibilities offered by 44X-SPACE: the owner is offered the possibility of arranging a sixth guest cabin here as an alternative. An unexpected layout enriched by a direct view of the water thanks to the large expanse of glass windows.

La La Land’s Upper Deck is exclusively devoted to the owner, in which privacy is the absolute protagonist. The space is designed for the dedicated individual, in a new ‘made-to-measure’ that stems from a continuous dialogue with the personality of the person living it. A first outdoor area positioned at the stern with windbreaks at the sides makes it possible to enjoy outdoor spaces even during meals. The living area connects with the outside thanks to the presence of sliding doors that disappear into the structure.

In addition, the possibility of opening the entire side window allows you to create a veranda in which to fully enjoy the fresh air. The master cabin reflects the majesty of the 5entire design: full-height windows combine with a skylight that can be opened to let in the sea breeze even while sailing. The master cabin overlooks a foredeck totally dedicated to the owner with private access, with sunbed area and integrated swimming pool.

An innovative aspect of the Sanlorenzo 44X-SPACE is the relocation of the wheelhouse and the captain’s private spaces to the Bridge Deck. Although this is a more technical area, here too all the spaces have been designed to maximize livability for guests. La La Land, specifically, features an external area protected by windbreaks that accommodates the dining, galley and living area aft. A bronzed mirror reflects the colours and details of the surrounding nature, becoming a decorative element that broadens the horizon.

The Sun Deck, situated atop the highest deck, functions as a luxurious terrace with a spacious living area, providing a 360° panorama of the sea. The Lower Deck accommodates 4 double cabins with en-suite bathrooms, 2 VIP cabins and 2 Guest cabins, pervaded by external light thanks to portholes defined by their large dimensions.

All the spaces dedicated to the crew are also located on this deck: a meticulous study of the subdivision and layering of the superyacht’s internal structure allows the crew to move from stern to bow without ever interfering with the spaces dedicated to guests.

The Beach Area, extendable through side panels, houses the Gym & SPA area, offering direct access to the sea via an opening staircase. Select materials in natural, neutral tones, in harmony with the seascape, are skillfully combined to create a unique result. A refined selection that gives the space elegance and comfort, but at the same time lightness and brightness: the oak parquet on the floor, together with the celino fabric, are harmoniously linked by the unusual use of resin applied to the walls.

The Sanlorenzo 44X-SPACE stands out for its avant-garde perspective, blending innovation with Sanlorenzo’s hallmark attention to detail and design heritage.

Shipyard Style, Design & Innovation

Sanlorenzeo yachts are at the forefront of progression and innovation, bringing yachting to a new era with the E-Motion Range of hybrid and diesel-electric yachts. Smaller diesel engines and battery-powered generators propel the hybrid yachts while the diesel-electric yachts use electric motors fed by industrial batteries. These yachts allow for greater fuel efficiency, lower vibrations and the ability to operate at ZEM (Zero Emissions Mode) at night. The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

September 17 was marked by meeting of the UFI Executive Committee. During the event, the Committe approved the admission of Crocus Expo IEC as a full member of UFI in categories of “Exhibition Organizers” and “Exhibition Centres. Moscow Boat Show has been granted the status of “UFI Approved Event”.

UFI, The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry is the association of trade show organizers, fairground owners, national and international associations of the exhibition industry, and its partners. As of 2012, it has 608 members in 224 cities from 86 countries covering 6 continents. The association members are responsible for the management and operation of over 4 500 profile events. The association represents more than 1 000 000 of exhibitors and more than 150 000 000 visitors.

The Crocus Expo Exhibition Centre is a listed member of the International Association of Congress Centres (AIPC), the Russian Union of Exhibitions and Fairs, the Guild of Exhibition and Fair Operators by the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Donald Tramp fund has awarded Crocus Expo IEC Diamond Excellence Award.

Crocus Expo IEC is an ideal venue for running of large international and national exhibitions of different profile including congress events, conferences and scientific symposiums.About 50% of all exhibition events of Moscow take place in Crocus Expo and average exposition space load comprises 85%.

Moscow Boat Show provides the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continues to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

The exposition space will increase up to 45 000 sq m in 2013. More than 350 Russian and foreign companies will participate in the show. The scale of the project confirms confident positions of its positive development.
