Notre flotte moderne se compose de navires taillés pour les croisières d’expédition ou de yachting. Du Ponant , notre mythique voilier, au Commandant Charcot , notre premier navire d’exploration polaire hybride électrique, nos navires sont dotés d’équipements à la pointe de la technologie . Nous assurons ainsi à la fois la sécurité de nos passagers et le respect des zones visitées.

Notre mythique voilier

Ce superbe voilier de tradition française dispose de 16 cabines et suites seulement. Comme sur un yacht privé, l’on y vogue en petit comité, entre amoureux de la mer et de la navigation sous voiles. Rénové en 2019, il redéfinit la notion de yachting de luxe et se mue en véritable écrin précieux pour vous recevoir dans des conditions inédites. Désormais plus intimiste, notre majestueux trois-mâts vous offre l’occasion de vivre une expérience de voyage ultime.

Nos yachts d’expédition

Les sisterships.

Yachts racés de 122 à 132 cabines et suites, conçus pour l’expédition, ces quatre Sisterships restent fidèles à notre philosophie : voyager sur des navires de petite capacité, dans une atmosphère unique : une subtile alliance de luxe, d’intimité et de bien-être. Décorés de mobiliers aux matériaux nobles, dans des tons doux et apaisants, ils véhiculent l’Art de vivre à la française, son raffinement discret, entre chic et décontraction naturelle. Inaugurés entre 2010 et 2015, ils comptent parmi la flotte la plus récente du marché.

Née en 2018, la série des PONANT EXPLORERS est constituée de navires de taille modeste, alliant respect de l’environnement, design distingué et technologies de pointe. Ils sont dotés d’un salon sous-marin multisensoriel unique au monde, Le Blue Eye, placé au sein de la coque, sous la ligne de flottaison. Ces six yachts d’exception, de 92 cabines et suites seulement, portent les noms des explorateurs français partis à la recherche de nouveaux espaces jusque-là inconnus.

Atteindre le véritable pôle Nord, réaliser la traversée de l’océan Arctique, découvrir l’extrême nord-est du Groenland… Le Commandant Charcot est conçu pour vous emmener sur les traces des grands explorateurs polaires, dans un écrin raffiné aux prestations de luxe jamais encore proposées dans les zones les plus extrêmes des hémisphères Nord et Sud. Plus encore que des croisières, ce sont de véritables odyssées polaires que nous vous proposons avec ce nouveau navire hybride électrique propulsé au GNL.

Le paul gauguin.

Le Paul Gauguin a été spécialement conçu pour naviguer dans les eaux polynésiennes. Son faible tirant d’eau permet d’accéder au plus près des lagons peu profonds et des îles isolées pour un temps d’escale optimal. Le nouveau design intérieur du navire, imaginé par le Studio Jean-Philippe Nuel en 2021, et les aménagements réalisés en 2023, évoquent l'élégance des mers du Sud et rendent hommage à la culture polynésienne : la rénovation magnifie les boiseries précieuses d’origines aux tons chauds et renforce son attachement à la culture et à l'identité locale en ajoutant une nouvelle palette de couleurs acidulées qui intègre des teintes lagon, une large gamme de verts et de tons naturels, des motifs végétaux et des tissages. Des vues panoramiques de paysages tropicaux, des œuvres d'art traditionnelles et un musée virtuel présentant plus de 150 peintures de l’artiste Paul Gauguin vous plongent dans l’univers exotique des îles luxuriantes du Pacifique.

Twilight is an Oyster 125 by Dubois, designed with two specific design requests from an experienced owner who has built more than a thousand yachts; Make it fast and comfortable. Dubios certainly exceeded the brief in this luxurious and powerful high-performance Super yacht. Twighlight's interior design by Rhoades Young affords a 360 degree panoramic view from her upper deck saloon in air conditioned luxury. The Upper deck saloon offers an ideal place for more formal dinner at her fabulous ten seat inlaid wood dining table, while her aft cockpit with seating for ten and aft deck couches offer elegant alfresco dining and sunbathing. Unique to Oyster is her Flybridge, also with seating for ten combined with a table and drinks fridge the flybridge area offers spectacular views from high above the water and is the ideal spot to enjoy the sailing or relax with a cocktail and watch the sunset.

This exceptional Oyster offers accommodation for eights guests in four luxurious en-suite cabins. The full width master stateroom is complete with a king size bed, sofa, large viewing ports two full length closets and a writing desk. The en-suite bathroom has a large shower and toilet equipped with his and her sinks. There are two double cabins with queen size beds which may also be divided on request to make singles; they are equipped with sofas, ample closet space and private ensuite bathrooms. The fourth guest cabin offers two full singles and an ensuite bathroom and shower. All cabins have large screen televisions, DVD players and stereos with ipod docks. The upper saloon has a large 3D television with theater sound system and ipod dock. The lower saloon has large screen TV with ipod dock. The Flybridge is equipped with stereo and ipod dock as is the lower cockpit.

Que ce soit à bord du SS Delphine où Franklin D. Roosevelt et Winston Churchill auraient négocié une partie des accords de Yalta, ou le bar du Christina O dans lequel ce même Churchill aurait rencontré pour la première fois John F. Kennedy et accueilli le mariage de Jacqueline Kennedy et d’Aristote Onassis, ou encore celui du Prince Rainier III de Monaco et de Grace Kelly, divers yachts ont marqué l’histoire du XX e siècle dans les sillons desquels est née le yachting professionnel.

Yacht, navire de haute ou de grande plaisance, yachting professionnel ou de luxe, super-yachts, mega-yachts… au-delà d’une terminologie floue et fluctuante se concentre le secteur très particulier des navires à moteurs ou à voiles de plus 24 mètres de long, armés pour accueillir des « touristes en goguette ». L’autorité de la concurrence définit le yacht comme un navire d’une longueur supérieure à 24 mètres et manœuvré par des équipages professionnels et subdivise les yachts en navire de moyenne plaisance (+ de 24 mètres), grande plaisance (+ de 40 mètres) et très grande plaisance (+ de 90 mètres). Bien que les yachts soient souvent à moteurs il existe encore de nombreuses unités de luxe à voiles comme le Maltese Falcon .

Croissance exponentielle dans les années 1990

Retraçant son étymologie dans le Jaghts néerlandais  : bateau rapide employé pour la poursuite des pirates et contrebandiers dès le XIV e siècle, puis pour porter avec célérité la nouvelle du retour d’un navire marchand, l’emploi récréatif des yachts aurait véritablement commencé au XVIII e siècle alors que le roi Charles II d’Angleterre organisait de nombreuses régates de yachts pour se distraire.

Restant majoritairement un privilège de la royauté et de la noblesse dans les décennies qui suivirent, c’est notamment sous l’impulsion de l’armateur Aristote Onassis et de ses frasques fort médiatisées à bord du Christina O , en compagnie de Maria Callas, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra… que le yachting tel qu’on le connaît actuellement a commencé à se développer en méditerranée dans les années 1950.

Le développement de ce secteur poussa les courtiers de yachts français à se réunir pour former au début des années 1980 la Mediterranean Yacht Broker Association (MYBA, aujourd’hui the Worldwide Yachting Association) créant des standards de location de ces navires et recensant dans des bases de données l’essentiel des yachts disponibles à la location en Méditerranée.

La location connue sur ces bases une croissance exponentielle à partir des années 90 , qui ne faiblit guère de nos jours, bien au contraire, alors que l’acteur historique MYBA se voit désormais concurrencé par de nouveaux intervenants comme la Large Yacht Brokers Association (LYBRA). C’est ainsi que voguent sur les mers « les jouets » de luxe les plus opulents de notre époque.

Louer un palace flottant pour les vacances

Alors qu’un yacht de 40 mètres de long coûte en moyenne 12 millions d’euros, ceux qui dépassent les 100 mètres de long peuvent atteindre plus de 200 millions d’euros à l’achat auxquels s’ajoutent des frais d’entretien qui sont en moyenne de 10 % du prix d’achat initial, par an. Au regard de ce gouffre financier, de nombreux propriétaires de yachts optent pour immatriculer leur navire sous un pavillon commercial, entraînant d’importants avantages financiers mais obligeant corrélativement à affecter ces navires, au moins partiellement, à une activité commerciale. Pour pallier cette difficulté est née une base très importante de yachts proposés à la location (plus couramment appelé charter ). En mai, parallèlement au Festival de Cannes, débute ainsi chaque année la saison du yachting en Méditerranée qui se poursuivra jusqu’en septembre.

Il suffira alors à un client intéressé par des vacances à bord d’un yacht de s’adresser à un courtier (couramment appelé yacht broker ) qui aura la charge de trouver un navire s’adaptant, au budget, disponibilité, qualité et destination souhaitée puis négocier avec le propriétaire du navire ou le gestionnaire de la commercialisation du navire appelé le central agent .

Le prix de la location très variable de ces navires, selon notamment leurs tailles et les services proposés, évolue dans une fourchette de quelques milliers d’euros à plusieurs centaines de milliers d’euros la semaine. Par exemple, la location du Lady S exigera de débourser la bagatelle de 1 470 000 euros pour profiter de ses diverses installations comme un hammam ou une salle de cinéma. Mais les plus méfiants préféreront peut-être le navire Eclipse avec ses vitres pare-balles, son système anti-missiles, anti-paparazzi, ses deux pistes d’hélicoptères et son sous-marin !

Plus de 2 000 litres/heure

Par ailleurs, le prix de la location ne représente qu’une part des frais engagés pour une traversée à bord de l’un de ces navires. Le coût du carburant, de la nourriture, des taxes portuaires, la TVA ou encore du pourboire de l’équipage… viendront alourdir la note finale de ces vacances dorées. La question de la TVA a d’ailleurs fait l’objet d’une récente évolution. Alors que pour soutenir le secteur du yachting, l’État français a pendant de nombreuses années exempté de TVA les locations des yachts commerciaux ; jusqu’à ce qu’une condamnation de la France par la Cour de justice de l’Union européenne ne vienne grandement réduire le champ de ces exemptions en 2013.

Ce point est très loin d’être négligeable, car les exemptions touchaient par exemple l’achat du carburant, là où certains navires peuvent consommer plus de 1 000 litres/heure de diesel, comme le Mangusta 165 qui peut atteindre une consommation de 2 100 litres/heure ! Cependant, les montants astronomiques de ces locations n’épargnent pas les clients des tracas habituels de tous voyageurs. L’affaire du Cardigrae VI , illustre ces difficultés : les passagers subirent des problèmes de moteurs, de climatisation, d’alimentation en eau et des retombées de suie lors de leur charter d’un coût de presque 300 000 dollars !

Ces tarifs ne donneront pas non plus une liberté absolue à bord, en effet, le port des chaussures ou la cigarette est rigoureusement interdits à l’intérieur des yachts.

Pas plus de 12 à bord !

De plus, contrairement à ce que l’on pourrait imaginer, ce sont des palaces à la capacité d’accueil très restreinte puisque la réglementation en vigueur limite le plus souvent à 12 le nombre maximum de passagers à bord pendant la navigation (ou jusqu’à 36 passagers pour certaines unités exceptionnelles). Mais peu de risque de sentir seul, car cette réglementation ne compte pas les membres d’équipage. C’est ainsi que le Lady Moura pourra vous accueillir avec ses 61 membres d’équipage !

Pour cette raison, l’essentiel des cérémonies ou autres festivités nécessitant l’accueil d’un grand nombre de passagers ne s’effectue jamais en navigation mais systématiquement quand le navire est amarré, hypothèse dans laquelle les yachts ne connaissent pas les mêmes limitations, c’est ce que l’on nomme un static charter .

Toutefois, il est erroné de croire que la pratique du yachting professionnel soit uniquement réservée à une élite financière ; plusieurs yachts proposent des locations de cabines pour quelques centaines d’euros par nuit et par personne par exemple le Callisto .

276 millions de chiffre d’affaires en France

La flotte mondiale de yachts est composée de plus 6 000 unités dont la moitié sillonne les rivages de la région Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur pendant la période estivale. Les destinations phares du yachting sont en effet, en plus de la Corse, les différents ports allant de Saint-Tropez à Monaco en passant par Antibes et son célèbre « quai des milliardaires », Cannes ou encore Golfe-Juan.

Le yachting représente ainsi plus de 400 entreprises principalement ancrées dans la région PACA employant plus de 1 800 personnes en emplois directs, pour 276 millions d’euros de chiffre d’affaires en 2016 . Ce secteur offre de nombreuses perspectives d’emplois permanents ou saisonniers. Un navire de 40 mètres comptera en effet usuellement un équipage de 8 personnes : un capitaine ou skipper, un second, un chef de cuisine, un mécanicien, deux marins et deux stewards ou stewardess. Il donne une place de choix pour de nombreux professionnels souhaitant naviguer mais aussi aux techniciens qui préfèrent rester à terre (chantiers de constructions, de réparations, réfections/refit, etc.).

Les pouvoirs publics cherchent aujourd’hui à favoriser ces emplois. L’Établissement national des invalides de la marine (ENIM), en charge de la sécurité sociale des marins, s’attèle par exemple à réduire les inégalités entre les travailleurs en s’assurant par des évolutions récentes que chaque marin résidant en France puisse bénéficier de standards minimums de protection sociale quel que soit sa nationalité, alors qu’auparavant les armateurs pouvaient préférer employer des travailleurs étrangers moins coûteux pour l’employeur en l’absence d’obligation de protection sociale.

Tout est donc réuni pour accompagner au mieux la multiplication actuelle des projets en faveur du yachting dans la région PACA. Parmi ces initiatives, citons par exemple La Ciotat qui prépare la construction d’ici 2024 d’un village d’entreprises dédiées au yachting s’étendant sur 32 000m² . La ville de Marseille participe de son côté à un projet de 77 millions d’euros à destination du yachting, tandis que la ville de Sète envisage la construction de 12 places de port pouvant accueillir des yachts de plus 100 mètres de long.

Le yachting donne ainsi l’occasion de faire rayonner la France à l’international par le biais de ses entreprises d’exceptions comme le chantier JFA Yachts qui a été récompensé par le ministère de l’Économie et des Finances du label « Entreprise du patrimoine vivant » , qu’il partage désormais avec des marques telles que Chanel et Hermès.

Un pavillon alternatif français

Bien que la Méditerranée soit le théâtre principal de la navigation de luxe, 80 % de la flotte mondiale des yachts s’immatricule auprès des pavillons de la Red ensign , qui regroupe les pavillons de divers territoires britanniques offrant une réglementation douanière, fiscale et sociale avantageuse. L’immatriculation des yachts représente une manne financière et créatrice d’emplois non négligeable. Ainsi, les yachts ont eu une place particulière dans la création en 2006 du Registre international français (RIF) : pavillon français alternatif dont l’État a montré une volonté forte de promouvoir . Cette volonté a d’ailleurs été récompensée car on recense une récente augmentation du nombre de yachts immatriculés sous ce pavillon alternatif français.

Au regard de l’importance économique de ce secteur, il n’est guère plus étonnant que le yachting ait été récemment impliqué dans la guerre commerciale que se livrent les États-Unis et l’Union européenne, alors qu’une taxe de 25 % a été instauré sur l’importation des navires de construction américaine en représailles des taxes américaines imposées par l’administration Trump sur l’importation de l’aluminium et de l’acier.

Cependant, en dépit de ces perspectives et de l’importance du yachting pour la région PACA, les pouvoirs publics ne semblent pas négliger les enjeux écologiques, comme le montre la publication prochaine d’un arrêté venant fortement limiter l’amarrage des yachts en Méditerranéen pour la préservation des herbes de posidonie , ce qui n’est pas sans susciter l’émoi et la crainte des plaisanciers.

Mais le yachting est également l’occasion de voir fleurir des projets qui se veulent favorables à l’environnement comme le REV , yacht en construction et qui se fixe pour objectif de collecter 5 tonnes de déchets plastiques par jour. L’homme libre chérira la mer mais on lui demande maintenant également de la protéger…

Pavillon De La Reine In Paris Embraces Boutique-Like Spirit

With star jasmine spreading gracefully across its front wall above a garden patio with hedgerows, trees and potted plants, Pavillon De La Reine  could be a countryside chateau anywhere in rural France.

Instead, it lies in the heart of Paris, Place des Vosges in the lively Marais district in the 3rd arrondissement, a few meters from the former home of renowned 19th-century author Victor Hugo whose literary works include  Les Misérables. 

While within easy walking distance of restaurants, art galleries and a nearby public garden, this elegant 56-room boutique-style property remains in quiet seclusion, tucked away from the street at the end of a short covered walkway.

Even on first glance, this renovated 17th-century property oozes charm, a rustic image enhanced by Japanese maple and holy olive trees adorning its front courtyard where wicker chairs and black metal tables with umbrellas for shelter and shade beckon one to sit and relax. Above are rooms with French windows and balconies with wrought-iron rails. There are also bikes parked here for guests to use free during their stay.

The interior is tastefully designed by Didier Benderli  of Kérylos Intérieurs. On the right is a lounge-cum-library with soft armchairs and a wall filled with shelves filled containing novels by authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Gustav Flaubert and art books on Picasso and Chagall. Opposite is a room with a marble fireplace and an honor bar, including what I consider to be the best of French pastis, a sign for me of a quality bar, Henri Bardouin from Provence, with 65 different ingredients. This is also where breakfast is served, a diverse buffet of meats, cheeses and fruits where we also enjoyed a veritable bucket - so large were the cups - of delicious hot chocolate. 

Overall, the ground-floor features original antiques, richly-colored oil portraits of aristocratic faces and contemporary-styled furnishings. ‘Anne,’ is the name of the restaurant, with a menu designed by Mathieu Pacaud. It was closed while we were there so I cannot comment much on it. The hotel also features a 250 square meter spa, with hammam, Jacuzzi, gym and two treatment rooms.

Each of the rooms and suites feature a different style and décor, so make sure to ask in advance if you prefer antique or modern. Our suite, 60, on the 3rd floor, comprised four separate rooms. Our living room, with a view onto a side street, featured gray and gold wallpaper, a matching sofa and two Queen Ann armchairs, an espresso machine, a writing desk and a mini-fridge. Standard in-room amenities also included a flatscreen TV and iPod dock.

A built-in wardrobe provided ample space and standing lamps were placed strategically placed around the room. Understanding what could best be termed intriguing ‘micro paintings’ on the walls was a challenge, with my companion concluding they were ‘trails of a snail on tree bark.’

Our bedroom was a haven of tranquility, facing an interior courtyard, ivy clinging to the walls around us and a large red-leafed plum tree below in the grassy square. Our bathroom had a combined tub and rainfall shower with toiletries by Codage of Paris.

If you’re interested in upscale accommodation in Paris that is a little more personal than your typical five-star hotel, this could be the place for you.

While staying there, take a short taxi ride to see one of the most intriguing art spaces in Paris, Atelier des Lumieres . Founded by Bruno Monnier, the President of Culturespaces in a former disused foundry, this Digital Art Centre displays works by world-known artists such as Cezanne and Kandinsky in a multimedia show projected on the huge walls, floor and ceiling of this industrial building. The result is an immersive experience in the worlds of these two painters, their landscapes and inspirations, accompanied by music. Exhibitions run until January 2023.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography. 

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita. 

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

• Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
• Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
• Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
• Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
• After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
• To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

• Elektrozavodskaya

• Dostoyevskaya
• Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions. 

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.
