Sequestrato a Trieste lo yacht a vela dell'oligarca russo Melnichenko. VIDEO

I numeri dello yacht

Watch Police Seize $578 Million Superyacht Linked To Russian Billionaire

MILAN — Italian financial police has seized a Russian-owned superyacht valued at $578 million in the port of Trieste as part of seizures of oligarch wealth to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt the war on Ukraine.

The “Sy A” yacht was identified by Italian police as belonging to billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko, who made a fortune in fertilizer production and coal energy. It was seized Friday evening.

Video shows police in cars with flashing lights approaching the triple-mast yacht and officers boarding it.

Italian authorities last week seized some 143 million euros ($156 million) in luxury yachts and villas belonging to Russian billionaires in such picturesque retreats as Sardinia, the Ligurian coast and Lake Como.

Barcolana – Trieste

September 30th-october 8th,2023. the largest sailing regatta in the world. collateral events.

Barcolana - Friuli Venezia Giulia - Italy

From September 30th to October 8th, 2023 is the “Barcolana week”, the sailing regatta that has been in the Guinness World Records since 2018 as the largest regatta in the world: 2689 boats registered.

Now Barcolana reached its 55th edition and it is an event known all over the world and the biggest event for the city of Trieste.

The regatta and the participants The Barcolana is held every year on the second Sunday of October in the Gulf of Trieste, between Miramare Castle and the stretch of sea in front of Piazza Unità d’Italia. Its particular formula makes it a unique event in the international sailing scene: from the same starting line professional sailors and simple enthusiasts compete side by side on the most various boats, racing machines and simple family yachts, divided into categories according to length.

The first edition (1969) was attended by 51 boats from the Trieste sailing clubs. Then, over the years many great names in the international sailing wanted to participate such as Paul Cayard, Ben Ainslie, Russell Coutts, James Spithill, Dean Barker, Vasilij Žbogar, Brad Butterwort and Jochen Schümann and great Italian sailors such as Cino Ricci, Mauro Pelaschier, Luca Devoti, Giorgio Gorla, Massimiliano Sirena, Francesco de Angelis, Vasco Vascotto. And also sportsmen from other disciplines and well-known personalities such as Tina Maze, Zvonimir Boban, Kristian Ghedina, Andrea Lo Cicero, Primož Roglič, Ranieri III of Monaco, Deborah Compagnoni.

An increasingly important event Every year about 25,000 sailors take part in the Barcolana and the public exceeds 300,000 people following the regatta both from the shores of Trieste and from the high ground of the Carso. To highlight the importance that the Barcolana has assumed over the years, it is enough to say that the Amerigo Vespucci, the Navy’s training ship, took part in the 50th edition (2018) and the starting line of the regatta was flown over by the Frecce Tricolori, the aerobatic team of the Italian Air Force.

Route The regatta takes place on a course of about 15 miles with fixed vertices, a quadrilateral with a starting line set between the Miramare Castle and the headquarters of the Sailing Company of Barcola and Grignano, and the finish line in the stretch of sea in front of Piazza Unità of Italy in Trieste.

Side events Although the regatta is held on Sunday morning, the organization has expanded to include a series of events on the sea and in the city for the previous ten days . In recent years there have been several regattas for young people, vintage boats, and also a swimming challenge…

From CruisersWiki

The city of Trieste sits at the head of the Gulf of the same name at the NE corner of the Adriatic, at the end of a narrow strip of Italy that projects SE for 22 miles from the port of Monfalcone into the territory of its neighbour to the E, Slovenia . Today Trieste is an important commercial hub, with a large container port, oil terminal, shipbuilding and steelworks as well as a substantial financial services sector. Its 19th century harbour of Porto Vecchio and associated warehouses have been the subject of major development in recent years, and most of Trieste’s yacht berthing facilities are in this area, in the small Marina San Giusto and the large basin of Bacino Sacchetta. A further small yacht harbour lies on the northern outskirts of the city in the suburb of Barcola. The shelter is good in most parts of the old harbour, although Trieste is not a place to have your boat in the water during the winter when the savage bora winds can reach 45-50 knots or more.

During the summer months, the prevailing winds in the Adriatic are light to moderate coastal sea breezes. In spring and autumn, northerly winds are more frequent and can quickly rise to near gale force, especially in the northern Adriatic, where the much-feared “bora” is caused by high pressure over the mountains to the NE coupled with low pressure over southern Italy. Fortunately, the fiercest “bora” is normally to be expected in the winter months. Thunderstorms are occasionally experienced in spring and especially autumn and can be accompanied by violent winds of gale force and above. Luckily they are rarely long-lasting. In the southern Adriatic, the “Scirocco”, a S/SE wind blowing up from North Africa which can last for several days, is more common. Unlike the “bora”, which can arrive without warning, a “scirocco” tends to build in strength over 24-48 hours, sometimes reaching gale force (especially in winter).

Sources for weather information:

  • There is a continuous (computerized voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
  • Navtex weather forecasts covering the Adriatic are broadcast from stations at Roma, Trieste, Kerkyra (Greece) and Split (Croatia)

See Aegean to West Mediterranean Passages .

Communication

Add here VHF channel for the coastguard, harbor masters. etc.

Also see World Cruiser's Nets .

The approach to Trieste is well buoyed and free from dangers. Three detached breakwaters SW of the Porto Vecchio are conspicuous in the approach from S, while in the approach from N the lighthouse of Faro della Vittoria , on a hill behind the suburb of Barcola two miles N of the Porto Vecchio, is a good landmark.

Bacino Sacchetta

Bacino Sacchetta lies immediately W of the small basin of Marina San Giusto , in the large sheltered basin of what was the first harbour of Trieste, Porto Vecchio. The basin has a total of around 400 berths on a series of pontoons managed by two separate sailing clubs, the Yacht Club Adriaco and the Società Triestina della Vela . Depths are from 2.0 - 14.0 metres. Water and electricity at all berths. Contact either of the clubs for mooring requests.

There are no suitable anchorages in the vicinity of Trieste.

Provisioning

The berths in the Porto Vecchio are close to provisions shops, but the other berths are some distance (especially in the case of Zaule ).

The berths in Marina San Giusto and Bacino Sacchetta are close to numerous bars and restaurants around the Porto Vecchio. Bacino harbour is also close to bars, restaurants and several hotels. Zaule is remote from everything.

Transportation

List transportation (local and/or international.)

Originally a minor Roman settlement, Trieste’s strategic position was recognized by the growing Austrian empire and the city came under Austrian control from the 16th century onwards. By the 19th century, Trieste was one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean and this golden age was reflected in the construction of most of the splendid buildings that grace the city today. By the turn of the century, the city had become the fourth largest in the entire Austro-Hungarian empire, only exceeded by Vienna, Prague and Budapest. Trieste became part of Italy following the dismantling of the Austro-Hungarian empire in 1918 at the end of the Great War, a position which was confirmed at the end of World War II, although most of Istria to the S and modern-day Slovenia to the E became part of the new Federation of Yugoslavia.

Places to Visit

Many of the grand buildings of Trieste’s 19th century golden age still stand, especially around the huge square of Piazza Unita d’Italia. The climb up to the hill of San Giusto is rewarded with the prospect of the huge 15th century Castello di San Giusto, which contains a small museum. The nearby Basilica di San Giusto has 14th century frescoes. Along the Canal Grande which borders the N end of the Porto Vecchio is the 19th century Serbian Orthodox church of Saint Spyridon, which contains some magnificent mosaics. The city also contains the remains of a Roman theatre and a Roman arch, Arco di Riccardo (so called becuase King Richard the Lionheart of England is reputed to have passed through it on his return from the Crusades.

A few kilometers N of the city near Grignano is the imposing 19th century palace of Castello di Miramare. Just three kilometers inland of Castello di Miramare is the huge cave of Grotta Gigante, the world’s largest cave open to tourism.

Sailing Yacht A pictured near Monaco harbour in May 2017.

Italian authorities seize one of world’s largest superyachts from oligarch

Sailing Yacht A, owned by Russian businessman Andrey Melnichenko, seized in Trieste on Friday evening

  • Russia-Ukraine war – latest news

Italian authorities have seized a €530m (£444m) superyacht owned by Russian businessman Andrey Melnichenko as part of EU sanctions following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine .

Sy A – short for Sailing Yacht A – was seized on Friday evening in the port of Trieste after being identified by Italian police as belonging to the billionaire owner of EuroChem Group, a major fertiliser producer, and the coal company SUEK.

Video footage reportedly showed police cars with flashing lights approaching the yacht, said to be one of the largest in the world, and boarding it.

EuroChem and SUEK said in statements on Thursday that Melnichenko had resigned as a member of the board in both companies and withdrawn as their beneficiary, effective on Wednesday.

It comes as Roman Abramovich’s superyacht Solaris was pictured arriving in Tivat, Montenegro, on Saturday. The vessel left a port in Barcelona earlier this week as the UK government imposed sanctions on the Russian billionaire owner of Chelsea Football Club.

On Thursday, it was tracked off the coast of Sicily after reportedly undergoing repairs earlier in the week in Barcelona, one of a number of apparently hurried sailings of Russian billionaires moving their superyachts to avoid seizure. His other yacht, the more luxurious Eclipse, was on Thursday located to the west of the Canary Islands.

A European Council decision authorising the sanctions against Melnichenko says he was one of 37 business leaders who met with the Russian president after the invasion of Ukraine to talk about the potential economic impact of EU and US sanctions.

Melnichenko, the document states, “belongs to the most influential circle of Russian businesspeople with close connections to the Russian government”.

It adds: “He is therefore involved in economic sectors providing a substantial source of revenue to the government of the Russian Federation, which is responsible for the annexation of Crimea and the destabilisation of Ukraine.”

A spokesperson for Melnichenko, Alex Andreev, said the businessman had “no relation to the tragic events in Ukraine. He has no political affiliations”.

“There is no justification whatsoever for placing him on the EU sanctions list,” Andreev said. “We will be disputing these baseless and unjustified sanctions, and believe that the rule of law and common sense will prevail.”

Italian authorities have separately seized €143m worth of luxury yachts and villas owned by Russian billionaires in luxury destinations including Lake Como, Sardinia and the Ligurian coast.

Nobiskrug, the manufacturer of Sailing Yacht A, describes the three-mast vessel on its website as “one of the world’s largest and most advanced superyachts” and the “ultimate embodiment of German superyachts built for the 22nd century”. It is almost 143 metres long, the mainmast is 100 metres above the waterline, and the yacht has a gross tonnage of about 12,600.

Other yachts seized by Italian police include Lady M, owned by Alexei Mordashov who, before being blacklisted this week by the EU, was the richest man in Russia. A yacht owned by Gennady Timchenko, another billionaire with close ties to Putin, was also seized.

2023 Melges 24 European Sailing Series - Melges 24 fleet set for racing in Trieste

September 22, 2023 - Trieste, Italy -  The next event of the  2023 Melges 24 European Sailing Series  takes place this weekend in Trieste, Italy.  La Settimana Velica Internazionale 2023 , including Melges 24 Adriaco Cup 2023 and Italian Melges 24 Tour ACT 4, is event number 10 in the renewed ranking-based series, where the events around Europe will be counted in the ranking. There are 19 entries from 6 nations on the entry list, including the current ranking leader –  Miles Quinton ’s  Gill Race Team  (GBR) with  Geoff Carveth  at the helm.

Miles Quinton’s Gill Race Team (GBR) with Geoff Carveth at the helm

The host club  Yacht Club Adriaco  is located in the beautiful city centre of Trieste – being the oldest yacht club on the Adriatic and overlooking the city of Bora for more than a century, it’s a point of reference for the city’s sailing community. For the Melges 24 international fleet, it is the first time to experience the hospitality of the Yacht Club Adriaco.

Nicolò de Manzini,  President of the Yacht Club Adriaco is happy to welcome Melges 24 class:  “Yacht Club Adriaco and Trieste are proud to host the Melges 24 European Sailing Series regatta. The Melges 24 Class is simply a legend, and we, as the organizers, are very happy to be also a “little” part of this great and successful story now. Welcome to all the Melges 24 teams and have a great sailing in Trieste!"

Michael Tarabochia’s White Room (GER) with Luis Tarabochia at the helm

Michael Tarabochia , the owner of  White Room  (GER) and Member Europe of the  International Melges 24 Class Executive Committee , can’t praise the club enough after being there for a few hours only when arriving on Thursday afternoon.  “Since arriving here we feel ourselves so very welcomed – the organizers are very friendly and helpful. The location of the club is just in the heart of Trieste city, well known as the city of the Barcolana. Even though it is close to the end of the season, it’s especially great to see a great fleet competing, most of them from Trieste area, but also from Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Great Britain, and Germany. It will be a great weekend of sailing on our beloved Melges 24!”

Chinook (HUN) of Akos Csolto

Three out of the Top 10 teams from the current ranking of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series (ESS) are present in Trieste. Above mentioned  Gill Race Team  (GBR) of  Miles Quinton , who has been winning the ESS overall champion title twice and the Corinthian trophy once, has travelled the most having sailed at five events so far this season. 2022 Melges 24 ESS Corinthian winner and runner-up in the overall ranking,  Chinook  (HUN) of  Akos Csolto , is holding runner-up placing also now with just a 0.5-point gap separating from the leader. These teams are holding the preliminary overall and Corinthian ranking top two positions. A third team from the ESS Top 10 present in Trieste is 2021 Melges 24 ESS Corinthian winner  Michael Tarabochia ’s  White Room  with  Luis Tarabochia  at the helm, currently sitting in the sixth position overall.

Il super yacht russo resta bloccato a Trieste e ci costa 7 milioni

yacht vela trieste

16 Gennaio 2023

yacht vela trieste
